Father I want to thank you so much for your goodness
-
thank you Lord as you have guided us to this
-
point it's so amazing to see through these years
-
how each week each letter each book that you
-
have guided us to share and to talk about is
-
so strategic and helping us as your people be
-
prepared not only to know you completely, Lord
-
Jesus, and to grow in true faith into the mature
-
manhood, but to really help us to see what's
-
happening around us. So we are asking in your
-
providence, again, to guide us in this truth.
-
I pray that your word speaks louder than anything
-
that any of us could say. and that it would really
-
hit hard and hit home to the heart that we may
-
boldly proclaim the truth without apology, and
-
that we would stand firm in the faith, holding
-
fast to the doctrine, and to speak boldly. against
-
those who speak falsely against you. Lord, we
-
do praise you and thank you in Jesus' name. Amen.
-
False teachers, the way to destruction is the
-
message of part one. We're going to be dealing
-
with the first three verses of chapter two, but
-
we're going to start off in chapter one, verse
-
16, and read through chapter two, verse three.
-
There's a reason why, because of the word but.
-
The word but is in the original, and it's taking
-
us back to what Peter had said previously. All
-
right? So let's pay attention to that, and then
-
we'll get in. It says, He received honor and
-
glory from God the Father. The voice was born
-
to him by the majestic glory. This is my beloved
-
Son with whom I am well pleased. We ourselves
-
heard this very voice born from heaven. For we
-
were with him on the holy mountain. And we have
-
the prophetic word more fully confirmed. to which
-
you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp
-
shining in a dark place, until the day dawns
-
and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing
-
this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture
-
comes from someone's own interpretation, and
-
no prophecy was ever produced by the will of
-
man, but men spoke from God as they were carried
-
along by... the Holy Spirit, but false prophets
-
also rose among the people, just as there will
-
be false teachers among you who will secretly
-
bring in destructive heresies, even denying the
-
master who bought them, bringing upon themselves
-
swift destruction, and many will follow their
-
sensuality. And because of them, the way of truth
-
will be blasphemed, and in their greed they will
-
exploit you, with false words their condemnation
-
from long ago is not idle and their destruction
-
is not asleep and i will tell you the rest of
-
chapter two just gives you examples of how god
-
destroyed and as we get through chapter two it's
-
really a clear concise condemnation and judgment
-
upon those who are false teachers and so we will
-
get through that But not today, it'll be next
-
week. So let's deal with the first principle.
-
It's a question, really. What do we do concerning
-
false teachers? Because many times we read about
-
or someone talks about false teachers, but they
-
never really say, well, what do you do with them?
-
We are commanded to beware and watchful of false
-
teachers, Matthew 7, 15. We are to warn the family
-
of God. of false teachers acts 20 29 we are to
-
expose false teachers ephesians 5 11 we are to
-
avoid false teachers romans 16 17 and we are
-
to rebuke false teachers first timothy 5 20.
-
this is not only for the preacher this is for
-
every believer who comes across a person who
-
speaks falsely against christ in his scripture
-
against god So in Romans 16, 17 through 18, it
-
says, I appeal to you brothers to watch out for
-
those who cause divisions and create obstacles
-
contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught.
-
Do you hear that? Romans 16, 17. I appeal to
-
you brothers to watch out for those who cause
-
divisions and create obstacles contrary to the
-
doctrine that you have been taught. Avoid them.
-
For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ,
-
but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery,
-
they deceive the hearts of the naive. I'll say
-
it this way, as my son Nicholas said when he
-
was much younger. Dad, not everything that's
-
Christian is Christian. Colossians 2 .8. See
-
to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy
-
and empty deceit according to human tradition,
-
according to the elemental spirits of the world,
-
and not according to Christ. And there is the
-
key there. So we know what Peter is saying here.
-
But false prophets, that literally just means
-
false prophets. Pseudo -prophetes is the term.
-
arose among the people. So even in the Old Testament,
-
there were those who claimed to be prophets of
-
God, messengers of God, speaking for God, that
-
rose among the people. We know because we've
-
seen it in the Old Testament, or we read it in
-
the Old Testament, not seen it. Read it in the
-
Old Testament. As a matter of fact, those group
-
of people and their families ended up being swallowed
-
by the earth. So, one who speaks on behalf of
-
God as if he is speaking for God. Just as there
-
will be false teachers among you. Interesting
-
term. Literally, false teachers just means false
-
teachers. There is no other term. And I will
-
show you that term in a minute. Among you. So
-
there will be false teachers among us. And we
-
see that all the time. And young people want
-
genuine faith. That's what they want. They want
-
genuine Christianity. And they're like, why are
-
there so many divisions? Because Jesus said there
-
will be. And so does Peter. There will be false
-
teachers among you who will secretly bring in,
-
who will introduce secretly and craftily, is
-
the term here, destructive heresies. A lot of
-
times we think about this word destructive heresy.
-
Destructive is destruction by discord or contention.
-
That's literally what destruction means. But
-
what's interesting is this word heresies. This
-
word heresies is translated as opinion meant
-
to bring ruin. So I want you to hear that. And
-
heresy is opinion. Not a clear understanding
-
of biblical doctrine. It is an opinion of biblical
-
doctrine. And so there is no such thing. God
-
doesn't care about your opinion. I know you've
-
heard me say that before. God cares about his
-
truth. And there is definitive truth. One of,
-
I think, the most difficult things is this idea
-
that is going around within the church that the
-
primary stay primary, but the secondary are secondary.
-
Let me make it clear. All things concerning God
-
are primary. We just need to end up being taught
-
by him and growing in the truth so that we understand
-
the secondaries. And that's important. All things
-
concerning God is primary. If you say one thing
-
wrong about God, God will judge you. That's why
-
we as preachers are held to a very, High standard.
-
We will give an account for everything we say
-
to you. And that's one of the reasons when I
-
screw up or I mess up, I apologize. I ask for
-
forgiveness. Like trans -positiation. It's trans
-
-substantiation. How I can forget that in a moment,
-
it has to be diabetes. That's all I can think
-
of. Oh, it's so funny. That was so true. You
-
guys know. Even denying the master who bought
-
them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.
-
We would say swift destruction is when? Remember,
-
a lifetime for a human is not very long in the
-
grand scheme of eternity. It comes swiftly. And
-
many will follow, will comply, will yield with,
-
or yield to. There's sensuality. Now many would
-
think this word, sensuality, is just something
-
that deals with lust. Actually, the list is quite
-
long concerning sensuality. So let me give it
-
to you. Unbridled lust, excessive licentiousness,
-
lasciviousness, wantonness, outrageousness, shamelessness,
-
and insolence. That's what sensuality is. So
-
to put it in a nutshell, sensuality is all wickedness.
-
That's what sensuality is. They will cause many
-
to comply with and yield to their wickedness.
-
And because of them, the way of truth will be
-
blasphemed. Is not the gospel in our day blasphemed?
-
I mean, we can leave some of that up to purpose
-
-driven church and purpose -driven life, can
-
we not? Along with all these other ideas of what
-
they think the gospel is. And in their greed,
-
in their desire for more and covetousness, they
-
will exploit you. They will use you for gain.
-
I want you to pay attention to that. It's all
-
those nice little TV preachers that we pay attention
-
to. They keep begging you for money. Right? Be
-
careful. Look what it says here. They will exploit
-
you with false words, with molded or formed.
-
In other words, they will say the words in such
-
a way that it's deceptive. They aren't genuine
-
words. And the word words is logos. Their condemnation,
-
their penal judgment from long ago is not idle,
-
is not inactive, and is not in delay. And their
-
destruction is not asleep. It doesn't linger.
-
So what is a false teacher? Pseudo -dikastelas
-
is the word here. Pseudo -dikastelas. The word
-
Pseudo means a lying, deceitful, or false teacher.
-
One who purposes to lie, deceive, and speak falsely
-
about God and his word. So let me give you the
-
first extreme. The charismatics. And I know that
-
there are several charismatic churches around
-
here. But I had to think of, how would I present
-
the one extreme and the other extreme for us
-
to be able to narrow down the reality of biblical
-
truth? And that's the only way I can think of
-
is through the Assemblies of God, the AOG. This
-
is their Statements of Fundamental Truths. Number
-
two, and you can go to their website, Assemblies
-
of God denomination, their website. The one true
-
God has revealed himself as the eternal self
-
-existent I am, the creator of heaven and earth
-
and the redeemer of mankind. He has further revealed
-
himself as embodying the principles of relationship.
-
And association as father, hear that word, association.
-
As father, son, and the Holy Spirit. The adorable
-
Godhead, subheading. Terms defined to terms,
-
trinity, and persons as related to the Godhead
-
while not found in the Scripture are words in
-
harmony with the Scripture whereby we may convey
-
to others our immediate understanding of the
-
doctrine of Christ. Respecting the being of God
-
as distinguished from God's many and Lord's many,
-
we therefore may speak with propriety. of the
-
Lord, our God, who is one Lord, as a trinity
-
or as one being of three persons, and still be
-
absolutely scriptural. Number two, the distinction
-
and relationship of the Godhead. Christ taught
-
a distinction of persons in the Godhead, which
-
he expressed in specific terms of relationship.
-
Do you hear that? Not that Christ expressed specific
-
terms of the Godhead, but that Jesus only spoke
-
concerning the Father as relationship. Not as
-
the person, just as relationship. As Father,
-
Son, and Holy Spirit, but that this distinction
-
and relationship as to its mode, there's the
-
key word, is inscrutable. and incomprehensible
-
because it's unexplained. Do you hear the word
-
mode there? See, what AOG is not telling you
-
is they preach and teach modalism under the guise
-
of Trinitarian language as to its mode, secretly
-
and craftily. Biblical view, Westminster Shorter
-
Catechism. There is three persons in the Godhead,
-
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, the
-
Holy Spirit. And these three are one God, the
-
same substance, equal in power and glory. Not
-
just relationship. That's question and answer
-
number five. Matthew 3, 16 and 17. And when Jesus
-
was baptized, Immediately he went up from the
-
water, and behold, the heavens were opened to
-
him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending
-
like a dove and coming to rest on him. And behold,
-
a voice from heaven said, This is my beloved
-
Son, with whom I am well pleased. You see the
-
triune God in one place. The Father, the Spirit,
-
and the Son. Number five concerning AOG's doctrinal
-
beliefs. The salvation of man. Pay attention
-
to this. This is remarkable. This should be offensive
-
in reality. The conditions of salvation. Salvation
-
is received through repentance toward God and
-
faith toward Jesus Christ. Forget about Ephesians
-
2. It's through faith. Forget about the reality
-
of the work of the Holy Spirit. Wherever the
-
wind blows, no one knows where the wind comes
-
from, but it comes and goes as He pleases. We
-
read that in John 3. Forget about that. It's
-
actually, you're saved through repentance now.
-
All you've got to do is repent. Let me continue.
-
Salvation is received. In addition, by the washing
-
of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,
-
being justified by grace through faith, there
-
it is, craftily, men become heirs of God according
-
to the hope of eternal life. Isn't that nice?
-
It's got that nice little bit of reformed in
-
there. You know, justified by faith alone. Just
-
enough. But remember, you're saved because of
-
repentance, not because of Christ. Ephesians
-
2, verse 8 and 9. For by grace you have been
-
saved through faith. And this is not of your
-
own doing. It is a gift of God, not a result
-
of works, so that no one may boast. Pretty simple,
-
isn't it? How are we saved? By grace through
-
faith. Repentance isn't even mentioned. So they're
-
using what Jesus said in Mark, repent and believe
-
the gospel. Repentance is a totally different
-
work of God. The baptism of the Holy Spirit.
-
This is where they really jump off the rails.
-
They're in a totally different direction at this
-
point. All believers are entitled to and should
-
ardently expect and earnestly seek the promise
-
of the Father. You're entitled to Him. You're
-
entitled to the Holy Spirit. Isn't that interesting?
-
Not only are you entitled to the Holy Spirit,
-
you are ardently to expect Him. So you repent
-
and get saved. You then, by faith, are put in
-
the family of God, but you don't have the Holy
-
Spirit yet. Who is the seal guaranteeing your
-
inheritance? Because you haven't spoken tongues
-
yet. I haven't gotten there yet. But in reality,
-
they're saying you should ardently expect one
-
day for him to show up. And boom, there he is.
-
Baptismal, here's the rest of it. Earnestly seek
-
the promise of the Father, the baptism in the
-
Holy Spirit, and fire. I don't know about you,
-
but I've been to several charismatic churches.
-
I've never seen fire pop up on somebody's head.
-
I have. According to the command of our Lord
-
Jesus. Now they're saying that the baptism of
-
the Holy Spirit is a command. You must be. baptized
-
in the Holy Spirit to speak in tongues. You must.
-
Or what happens if you never speak in tongues?
-
You're in deep trouble. Fire never happened on
-
you. This was the normal experience of all the
-
early Christian churches. With it, it. Do you
-
hear that? The reason why they use the term it
-
is because they don't look at the Holy Spirit
-
as a person. They don't call him he. He's a force,
-
a means to an end. With it comes the endowment
-
of power. Very interesting words. If you guys
-
are like words, sometimes I mess up on my words.
-
I don't speak good English. It's okay. Endowment
-
is a very interesting word. Not endowment. An
-
endowment of power. For life and service. In
-
other words, when it comes, it endues you with
-
power to live the Christian life and to serve
-
him. The bestowment of the gifts and their uses
-
in the work of ministry. This experience is distinct
-
from the subsequent. and subsequent to the experience
-
of the new birth. What? Since when is my experience
-
concerning my service to Christ separated from
-
my new birth? Because of my new birth, I do serve
-
Him. With the baptism of the Holy Spirit, come
-
such experiences. What do you hear now? It's
-
all about experiences. It's not about truth here.
-
It has nothing to do with what God says salvation
-
is or your justification or your sanctification.
-
We haven't got there yet. It's all about your
-
experience. Here's four experiences. By experiencing
-
the Holy Spirit, you'll have an overflowing fullness
-
of the Spirit. A deepened reverence for God,
-
an intensified consecration to God, and a dedication
-
to His work, and a more active love for Christ,
-
for His Word, and for the lost. That's the work
-
of the Holy Spirit. That's what they say. If
-
it enters you, That's what you're going to get.
-
Interesting. Number eight. The initial physical
-
evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. That's
-
subheading. The baptism of believers in the Holy
-
Spirit is witnessed by the initial physical sign
-
of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit
-
gives them utterance. The speaking in tongues
-
in this instance is the same in essence as the
-
gift of tongues, but is different in purpose
-
and use. Really? That makes me feel good. Biblical
-
view number one. Corinthians 12, 12 -13. For
-
just as the body is one and has many members,
-
and all the members of the body, though many,
-
are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one
-
spirit we were all baptized into one body, Jews
-
or Greeks, slave or free, and all were made to
-
drink of the one spirit. Where's tongues in that?
-
Doesn't exist. What's this mean? Being baptized,
-
being put into Christ by the Holy Spirit guarantees
-
that we are in the family of God, guaranteed
-
the inheritance, and all that he has promised
-
in and through it. I will not leave you as orphans,
-
Jesus said. So what happens to all those who
-
never speak in tongues? Are they left as orphans?
-
Something to think about. Number nine, sanctification.
-
Interesting. This is interesting. Sanctification
-
is an act of separation from that which is evil
-
and of dedication unto God. The scripture teaches...
-
The scriptures teach a life of holiness without
-
which no man shall see the Lord. By the power
-
of the Holy Spirit, we are able to obey the commands.
-
Be ye holy, for I am holy. I agree with that
-
statement. Of course, you know, they have a little
-
bit in here. A little bit of nice, good doctrine.
-
And then all of a sudden... This is where sanctification
-
is realized in the believer by recognizing his
-
identification with Christ in his death and resurrection.
-
Do you hear that? You are sanctified when you
-
realize you're sanctified. And when you realize
-
you're sanctified, you recognize your identity
-
in Jesus. That's when I'm sanctified. My identification
-
with Christ in his death and resurrection and
-
by faith reckoning daily upon the fact of that
-
union. In other words, I am only sanctified if
-
I daily recognize my identity in Jesus. And by
-
offering every faculty continually to the dominion
-
of the Holy Spirit. In other words, my sanctification
-
is solely dependent upon my work alone. Biblical
-
worldview. Biblical view. Westminster Shorter
-
Catechism. Sanctification is the work of God's
-
free grace whereby we are renewed in the whole
-
man after the image of God and are enabled more
-
and more to die to sin and live unto righteousness.
-
By the Spirit. 1 Corinthians 1 .30. This kind
-
of blows the whole thing out of, because the
-
reality is, Christ is our sanctification. Look
-
what it says, 1 Corinthians 1 .30. And because
-
of him, you are in Christ Jesus, who became to
-
us wisdom from God, righteousness, sanctification,
-
and redemption. Now, I'm doing really good. Holy
-
smokes. The other end of the spectrum. So that's
-
one end. I chose AOG because it's the most popular
-
charismatic denomination in all of religion.
-
Now, I don't know about you, just going through
-
AOG and reading just those. What do they have
-
biblically in common with biblical truth? Why
-
do we call them sisters and brothers in Christ
-
when in reality they live and walk in deception?
-
And if they are saved, they need to leave those
-
churches. Do I believe that there are saved brothers
-
and sisters in those churches? I do. But why
-
do they attend? The same reason why there are
-
possibly, possibly, brothers and sisters who
-
go to Catholic church who attend. Because they
-
love the experience. If your experience in the
-
church determines your biblical stance on truth,
-
you are in sin. Experience never overrides sound
-
doctrine. Eastern and Greek Orthodox churches.
-
It's the same thing. So if you hear about a Greek
-
Orthodox, I just learned this. If you hear about
-
a Greek Orthodox church, they're an Eastern Orthodox
-
church. It's the same exact thing. This comes
-
from their writings and their decree, which I'll
-
share with you in a minute. The Mysterion of
-
the Holy Eucharist. Communion. We believe that
-
our Lord Jesus Christ is present in and there's
-
a bunch of other information in there which I
-
was like that's just wording. I'm just getting
-
rid of that. But truly and truly so that after
-
the consecration of bread and wine the bread
-
is changed transubstantiated transformed, transformed
-
into the very true body of the Lord. And the
-
wine is transformed and transubstantiated into
-
the very true blood of the Lord. That's cannibalism.
-
I don't know about you. That's just weird. But
-
the Catholic Church does the same thing. So what
-
you'll hear in Eastern Orthodoxy is the true
-
church. And you cannot go to heaven unless you
-
are part of the Eastern Orthodox Church. To get
-
into the Eastern Orthodox Church, you must be
-
baptized into the Eastern Orthodox Church, and
-
you must partake properly in the Eucharist. Or
-
you're not in. All other churches are damned.
-
And they can't stand Protestant churches, let
-
alone of R .C. Sproul. I read a documentation
-
of their, and it was all filled with R .C. Sproul
-
comments. That's because it's true. So they didn't
-
use it. They tried to speak against what he was
-
saying. We also believe that after the consecration
-
of bread and wine, it is no longer the bread
-
and wine itself that remains, but the very body
-
and blood of the Lord under the form and image
-
of bread and wine. Wow! This is under Christendom.
-
We also believe that this most pure body, and
-
blood of the Lord is dispensed and enters the
-
mouths and the wombs of those who partake, both
-
the pious and the wicked. Only those who are
-
pious and worthy receive remission of sins. Quote,
-
unquote. This is all quotes. They receive remissions
-
of sins and eternal life. That's a false gospel.
-
They are liars. While those who are ungodly and
-
unworthy receive condemnation and eternal judgment.
-
Well, interesting. Now I understand why they
-
use the word mysterion. The mysterion of repentance.
-
You'll like this. And we know exactly what, let
-
me read this. I've got to read this. 1 Corinthians
1 Corinthians 2 chapter mention
-
chapter 2. Chapter 11. Let me make this very
-
clear so you understand biblically that what
-
I'm speaking to you is true. Okay? Okay? The
-
Lord's Supper is a proclamation of his death
-
and a proclamation, a continued proclamation
-
until he returns. So what we're saying is Christ
-
died for our sins, was buried. And he will return
-
again because he is resurrected. And Jesus says
-
to do this in remembrance of me. The word remembrance
-
is very clear in the Greek for those Greek scholars
-
within the Eastern Orthodox Greek Church. It's
-
very clear. They just skip over that. Because
-
it doesn't fit the traditions of men. And let
-
me make this very clear. From the time of Christ
-
to his, all the way to 1100, there was only one
-
church. It was called the church. Ekklesia, the
-
body of Christ. That's it, the bride. That's
-
all there was. And there happened to be a great
-
schism in 1100 where the church divided. into
-
the Eastern Church and the Western Church. The
-
Eastern Church became the Eastern Orthodox Church
-
or Greek Orthodox Church or the Orthodox Church.
-
And the Western Church became the Roman Orthodox
-
Church, which eventually became the Roman Catholic
-
Church. And from the Roman Catholic Church, thank
-
God for the Reformation, there became... Throughout
-
the years, divisions, God pulled the wheat out
-
in the Reformation. So let me read to you. Communion.
-
For I received from the Lord what I also delivered
-
to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night when
-
he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had
-
given thanks, he broke it. And said, this is
-
my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance
-
of me. So when he says this is my body for you,
-
what he's showing them is my body's been broken
-
for you. Not that the bread is literally his
-
body. So when Jesus says, unless you eat my body
-
and drink my blood, you have no part of me, he's
-
using it in a figurative term. It's interesting.
-
How figurative orthodoxies are concerning Eastern
-
and Catholic. Really figurative when it comes
-
to a lot of different things, especially when
-
they want to control you and dominate you and
-
tell you what you can and cannot do. Except for
-
when you take the Eucharist. It's literal. You're
-
just putting Jesus on a plate and going it down.
-
That's literally what they're saying. It's in
-
remembrance of me. In the same way, also, he
-
took the cup after supper, saying, This cup is
-
the new covenant in my blood. Do this as often
-
as you drink it in remembrance of me. The new
-
covenant. For as often as you eat the bread and
-
drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death
-
until he comes. Come, Lord Jesus. The mysterion
-
of repentance. Another mystery. The church states
-
that after one baptism for the remissions of
-
sin, well, I thought you just said that the only
-
way I get remission of sin is if I eat the Eucharist.
-
How can I be forgiven of my sin if I haven't
-
taken Eucharist yet? Now I'm in baptism for the
-
remission of sin, but not for the Eucharist now.
-
And the confession of sins through the sacrament
-
of repentance. is considered God's highest gift
-
to men. Tradition subheading. While the Bible
-
is treasured as a valuable written record of
-
God's revelation, it does not contain wholly
-
that revelation. When I read that, I was about
-
to have a seizure. I'm like, what? What? What?
-
Oh, that makes sense. You know why? Because the
-
priest is also inspired as the word is. So every
-
time a priest comes up and speaks, he's also
-
being inspired by the Holy Spirit to give you
-
his truth. Remember we talked about the opinion.
-
The Bible is viewed as only one expression of
-
God's revelation in the ongoing life of his people.
-
Scripture is part of the treasure of faith, which
-
is known as tradition. What's the other part?
-
Why the Orthodox kiss and venerate holy icons.
-
Here's the other part. So you got to do the Eucharist,
-
you got to do baptism, and you got to kiss a
-
bunch of pictures and pray to the pictures. Yeah.
-
Orthodox Christians kiss icons and bow before
-
them because Christ entered the world and made
-
himself a part of it. And that world he entered
-
is good and holy. It was originally until sin
-
entered and corrupted everything. For the ways
-
of sin is death. For all have sinned and fallen
-
short of the glory of God. If the world he entered
-
is good and holy, Then you're good and holy until
-
you screw it all up. I wonder when that is. In
-
this way, icons serve as windows into heaven,
-
showing us the glory of Christ. We kiss icons
-
to express our love. They serve as windows into
-
the sacred realm of heaven, into the kingdom
-
of God. The persons betrayed on these wooden
-
icons are in a spiritual way present with us.
-
I remember a prophet that Saul conjured up. Do
-
you remember? Samuel? He gets the witch. Brings
-
Samuel back. Samuel goes, what are you doing?
-
So do not be alarmed. I'm a little scared. Not
-
really. If you see Orthodox Christians crossing
-
themselves in front of the icons and kissing
-
them, that's called idolatry. Romans chapter
Romans 1 chapter mention
-
1. I told you I'm going to give you Bible verses
-
for everything. Romans 1. You've got to love
-
it so far, right? For although they knew God,
-
they did not honor him as God and give thanks
-
to him, but they became futile in their thinking,
-
and their foolish hearts were darkened, claiming
-
to be wise. They became fools, and they exchanged
-
the glory of the immortal God for images resembling
-
mortal men, and birds, and animals, and creeping
-
things. Confession of Doctrine by Desithius.
-
The Decree 13. We believe that a person is justified
-
not simply by faith alone, but by faith urged
-
on by love, that is, by faith, through faith,
-
and works. Let us recognize as completely unholy
-
the idea that faith replacing works requires
-
justification in Christ. For faith in this sense
-
could be appropriate for everyone. And there
-
would be no unsaved. Which is obviously false.
-
No. Because what they're doing with this idea
-
of justification is they're disregarding penal
-
substitutionary atonement. So let me make this
-
very clear for you. Atonement. To be justified.
-
Atonement is offered to the world. It is applied
-
only to the believer. I can give you many examples
-
of that. Especially in the New and Old Testament
-
concerning when they would take an animal and
-
they would sacrifice the animal but they would
-
take the animal into the house and the animal
-
would stay in the house for the week and then
-
they would take the animal out of the house to
-
sacrifice it for the family that the animal was
-
in. Does that mean it was for you? If you didn't
-
live in the house, no. And there would be no
-
unsaved, obviously. On the contrary, we believe
-
that it is not this specter of faith alone, but
-
that faith, that the faith that is in us through
-
works justifies us in Christ. We honor deeds
-
not only as evidence confirming our calling,
-
but also as fruits that make our faith active
-
and can, according to the divine promise, deliver
-
to everyone a well -deserved reward, good or
-
bad, depending on what he has done with his body.
-
That's just two of the extremes. Let me read
-
to you Galatians 2 .16 so that you clearly understand.
-
Biblically, what the Bible says concerning justification.
-
You guys ready? For we ourselves, this is Paul
-
speaking to the Galatians who are Jews, we ourselves
-
are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners. Yet,
-
we know that a person is not justified by works
-
of the law, but through faith in Jesus Christ.
-
Could we get any more clear than that? In order
-
to be justified by faith in Christ and not by
-
works of the law, because by works of the law
-
no one will be justified, Mr. Priest of the Eastern
-
Orthodox Church. You can't get more clear than
-
what I just read to you. It is very clear. So
-
why do I share these two examples here? What
-
do you notice about these two examples? Who's
-
preeminent in these two examples? Is Jesus? Who
-
is man? Man's the preeminent. What's interesting
-
about these two examples, depending on... Where
-
you're at, whether you are in the evangelical
-
extreme or you are in the orthodox extreme, the
-
doctrines are almost the same, aren't they? Jesus
-
worded it a little differently. So let me read
-
to you 1 Peter again. 2 Peter 2. But false prophets
-
also arose among the people, just as there will
-
be false teachers among you, who will secretly
-
bring in, introduce secretly and craftily, The
-
opinions meant to bring ruin and destruction
-
by discord and contention, even denying the master
-
who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift
-
destruction. And many will follow, will comply
-
with, will yield to their unbridled lust, excessive
-
licentiousness, lasciviousness, wantonness, outrageousness,
-
shamelessness, and insolence. And because of
-
them, the way of truth is blasphemed. And in
-
their greed, in their desire for more and covetousness,
-
they will use you for gain and mold and form,
-
not being genuine words. Their condemnation,
-
their penal judgment from long ago is not inactive
-
or in delay and their destruction is not lingering.
-
So I'm going to share this with you. Not everything
-
that calls itself Christian is Christian. And
-
we have to, with boldness and confidence, speak
-
the truth about Christ. Not in an attitude of
-
condemnation toward toward those who are lost
-
and deceived. But to those who speak as though
-
they speak truth. And you know what we're supposed
-
to do for them. I gave you all the Bible verses.
-
What are you supposed to do? But like Chuck says,
-
do it with love. But do it. We live in some evil
-
days. And these heresies have been in existence
-
since the church started. If there were false
-
prophets in the Old Testament, there are false
-
teachers today. Be very careful. Weigh everything
-
that I preach and everything that I say in accordance
-
with the scriptures. Weigh it all. Anything you
-
hear someone speak, you weigh it. I love Votibachum,
-
but I weigh everything he used to say. Same thing
-
with John MacArthur. I weigh everything he used
-
to say. R .C. Sproul, I weigh everything he used
-
to say. It's my responsibility as a believer.
-
As a workman approved by God. So, that's just
-
a little bit. We'll finish chapter 2 next week.
-
Okay? Father, I want to thank you so much for
-
your goodness and faithfulness. Thank you, Lord,
-
for your word. Thank you, Holy Spirit, that you
-
guide us in all truth and that your word, Lord
-
Jesus, is inerrant and infallible, the word of
-
God. And thank you through divine preservation,
-
you have given us translation so that we may
-
know confidently that the Bibles that we read
-
are your word. and in reflection of the actual
-
real codex that you have given us. We praise
-
you and thank you for your goodness and your
-
faithfulness to be honored and glorified forever.
-
In Jesus' name, amen.
