  1. So before we get started, we're going to read

  2. and then I'll pray. Let's read the Word of God

  3. together. All right, so let us read. I'm going

  4. to start off in verse 4 of chapter 2 and then

  5. go through 14. We're going to be doing chapter

  6. 2, verse 7 to 14. Whoever says, I know him, but

  7. does not keep his commandments is a liar and

  8. the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps his

  9. word in him, truly the love of God is perfected.

  10. By this we may know that we are in him. Whoever

  11. says he abides in him ought to walk in the same

  12. way in which he walked. Beloved, I am writing

  13. to you no new commandment, but an old commandment

  14. that you had from the beginning. The old commandment

  15. is the word that you have heard. At the same

  16. time, it is a new commandment. That I am writing

  17. to you which is true in him and in you because

  18. the darkness is passing away and the true light

  19. is already shining. Whoever says he's in the

  20. light and hates his brother is still in darkness.

  21. Whoever loves his brother abides in the light

  22. and in him there is no cause for stumbling. But

  23. whoever hates his brother I'm writing to you,

  24. little children, because your sins are forgiven

  25. for his namesake. I'm writing to you, fathers,

  26. because you know him who is from the beginning.

  27. I'm writing to you, young men, because you have

  28. overcome the evil one. I'm writing to you, children,

  29. because you know the father. I write to you,

  30. fathers, because... You know him who was from

  31. the beginning. I write to you, young men, because

  32. you are strong and the word of God abides in

  33. you and you have overcome the evil one. Father,

  34. I want to thank you so much for your word. I

  35. ask you, Lord, that you would guide us as we

  36. go through these seven verses. Help us to understand

  37. the importance of your word and help us to understand

  38. the reflection of Christ in our lives as we love

  39. one another. Lord, we give you honor, glory,

  40. and praise in Jesus' name. Amen. So one of the

  41. things I want us to understand, there are a few

  42. things I need you to pay attention to as we go

  43. through this. There are several things you must

  44. pay close attention to. First, John states eight

  45. times, I am writing to you. Second, four times

  46. he mentions commandment, twice a old and twice

  47. a new commandment. And third, darkness is mentioned

  48. four times. So why is this important? Not only

  49. these, he also deals with the word hate. He deals

  50. with the word light. He deals with the word love.

  51. But these main focuses are extremely present

  52. here. And when God mentions things like that,

  53. it is for us to pay attention to. And obviously

  54. the most glaring is. I'm writing to you. To walk

  55. as Christ walked is to love your brother as he

  56. loved us. You are your brother's keeper as Christ

  57. is to his brothers and sisters. Christ is your

  58. keeper. As a matter of fact, the reality of this

  59. truth shows that that is where the doctrine of

  60. perseverance of the saints comes from. You persevere

  61. because Christ is your keeper. understanding

  62. that we are responsible to one another. Now,

  63. so when he says that there is a commandment,

  64. a new one, an old one that was given, and it's

  65. also a new one, you're going to see this in a

  66. minute. So in John 13, 34 through 35, he says,

  67. a new commandment I give to you that you love

  68. one another. Just as I have loved you, you also

  69. are to love one another. By this, all people

  70. will know that you are my disciples if you have

  71. love for one another. You see, in the Old Testament,

  72. he said, love your neighbor. Jesus summarizes

  73. the commandments concerning your neighbor, and

  74. he says, love your neighbor as yourself. This

  75. new commandment that Christ gives, though it

  76. is an old one, is that you should love the family.

  77. Do you love each other? That is the question

  78. here. Do we love the family? Love for one another.

  79. The world will know that we are his disciples

  80. when we love one another. Now in first John chapter

  81. two, verse seven through 11, kind of clarifies

  82. this reality. Beloved, I am writing you. He's

  83. not writing to everybody. John is writing to

  84. you. He's saying to the believers, That have

  85. been dispersed and are scattered. And he's not

  86. writing a new commandment. No new commandment.

  87. But an old commandment. This is a commandment

  88. that's been from the beginning. That you had

  89. from the beginning. But what is that? We know

  90. what that is. We know because Cain had just killed

  91. his brother. And Jesus goes to him and says,

  92. Cain, where's your brother? And Cain says, am

  93. I my brother's keeper? Yes, you are. This is

  94. nothing new. As a matter of fact, we know because

  95. Christ loved us. The reality of love is from

  96. the beginning. And we know that he loves us because

  97. he has loved us before he created anything. So

  98. the old commandment is the word that you have

  99. heard. What old commandment? To love one another.

  100. This idea that God loves us and has sent propitiation

  101. for us, which we've read previously. This old

  102. commandment that the word that you have heard.

  103. We also know that because in John 1, 1, 1, John

  104. 1, 1, it says that which was from the beginning,

  105. which. We have heard, which we have seen with

  106. our own eyes, which we've looked upon and have

  107. touched with our hands concerning the word of

  108. life. In the beginning was the word and the word

  109. was with God and the word was God. The Logos,

  110. the word became flesh. It is an old commandment

  111. from the ancient of days. So this word that we

  112. have heard to love one another. At the same time,

  113. and this term at the same time means again or

  114. on the other hand. On the other hand, it is a

  115. new commandment. We know what that is because

  116. Jesus gives it. Love one another, not just the

  117. neighbor. We know that the Jews were commanded

  118. to love their neighbors because when a sojourner

  119. would come into the country and into the city,

  120. they as Jews were to host them. and take them

  121. in and feed them and house them. And then eventually,

  122. when they leave, to send them off with food.

  123. They were to be good neighbors to the sojourner.

  124. And so what we see here is this new commandment

  125. is, are you loving towards one another? With

  126. that, I'm writing to you, he continues in 1 John

  127. 2, which is true in him and in you. What's true

  128. in Christ? Love. He is the word. He is love.

  129. And if he is love and he is in you, then you

  130. are to love. You are to walk as he walked. And

  131. that's what he means here. Which is true in him,

  132. in Christ. And is also in you because love lives

  133. in you. Because the darkness is passing away.

  134. I love this statement. in a state of transition.

  135. Now I know, I think we can all agree, that if

  136. we were looking to hope or looking to win on

  137. this battlefield, it's not going to happen. The

  138. reality is we've already won in Christ. But this

  139. idea where we know that the world will get darker,

  140. But here John states something that's quite remarkable.

  141. Darkness is in a state of transition. There's

  142. something we know concerning the reality of darkness.

  143. And that is what? The darker the darkness, the

  144. brighter the light. As dark gets darker, light

  145. gets brighter. And there's one thing that we

  146. know. Darkness cannot and will not. ever have

  147. victory over light because light chases away

  148. the darkness so the reality is is that darkness

  149. is passing away darkness is in a state of transition

  150. because we see that in creation in genesis 1

  151. in the beginning god created the heavens and

  152. the earth and the earth was void and without

  153. form and and there was darkness over the face

  154. of the deep and the spirit of god was hovering

  155. over the God said, let there be light. And what

  156. happens to the darkness? Whoosh, it's gone. You

  157. turn off all the lights in this room. If there

  158. is one light, it will start to eat away the darkness.

  159. And that's what he means here. Just because we

  160. live in a dark world and the darkness seems to

  161. get darker, we should not fear that the darkness

  162. will overtake us. Because where darkness is,

  163. Light is brighter. And that's what he means here.

  164. And, he says, continues, and the true, the real,

  165. the genuine light. And we know what this word

  166. is in the original because it's dealing with

  167. the issue of the light of Christ, the phos. The

  168. light of Christ is already shining. What a victory

  169. statement. What a confidence we have as believers.

  170. That even in the midst of the darkest darkness

  171. you can imagine, the brightest light of Christ

  172. is already shining. And this word already shining

  173. means even now and before now continues to give

  174. light. In other words, he was giving light before

  175. creation and he's even now giving light and that

  176. light will continue to give light. Wow. We will

  177. never. be in darkness again. Whoever says he

  178. is, or he exists in the light, the light of Christ,

  179. and hates, detests, has ill will, or abhors his

  180. brother, who is a fellow believer and a family

  181. member, united by our common bond, is still in

  182. darkness. You cannot say that you exist in the

  183. light of Christ and still hate. Or have ill will

  184. against your brother. Who is a believer. One

  185. who is supposed to be in common union with you.

  186. And still be in darkness. And expect to be in

  187. the light. Because you won't be. The reality

  188. is you are still in darkness. You remain in the

  189. ignorant. You remain ignorant of divine things.

  190. And you remain in wickedness and misery. To not

  191. love your brother is to not exist in the light.

  192. But you still remain in your wickedness, in your

  193. misery, in your sin. Whoever loves his brother

  194. abides, means to be held or kept continually.

  195. This is again proof that we persevere. That Christ

  196. holds us and keeps us continually. Because he

  197. is our keeper. This understanding of abiding.

  198. Do you abide in Christ? Are you being held and

  199. kept continually in the light? And in him there

  200. is no cause for stumbling. In a brother or sister

  201. who is held and kept continually in the light

  202. of Christ. Will not stumble. He doesn't walk

  203. in the dark. Even the darkest of paths are his

  204. light to us. We never really walk stumbling.

  205. And that's what he means here. There is no cause

  206. for us to stumble. But whoever hates his brother.

  207. This word hate is a very clear term which we've

  208. just read previously. Is in the darkness and

  209. walks in the darkness. Continues to live in wickedness

  210. and misery. And does not know where he is going.

  211. He is walking and leading away in his life in

  212. the blindness of his sin. Because the darkness

  213. has blinded his eyes. Wow. So why so clearly

  214. stated, John? Why is he clearly stating this?

  215. Because there was a continual problem among those

  216. who say they believe. They did not love one another.

  217. It's a demand to be right. It's a demand to be

  218. in control. It's a demand and all these other

  219. things. And they weren't loving. And Jesus says

  220. it this way in John 11, 10. He says, Jesus said,

  221. if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles because

  222. the light is not in him. So you can't say you

  223. are in Christ and walk as if you're not in him.

  224. That's hypocrisy, obviously. I love in Pilgrim's

  225. Progress what John Bunyan states here. Christian

  226. states concerning talkative, quote unquote. This

  227. is in play one. If you ever read it, it's a play.

  228. And he gets together with, he's talking, I believe

  229. he's talking to Pliable at this point. I can't

  230. remember if it's Pliable or, I can't remember

  231. who it is. And Christian had just got done talking

  232. to talkative. Talkative is a terrible dude. Talkative

  233. is just that dude that just talks but doesn't

  234. live. He just blabs. And that's the point here.

  235. As a matter of fact, Christian states it this

  236. way, quote unquote, for my part, I am of opinion

  237. that he, talkative, has by his wicked life caused

  238. many to stumble and fall and will be if God prevents

  239. not. the ruin of many more. Quote, unquote, John

  240. Bunyan. Wow. This type of quote, unquote, believer

  241. is really the ruin of many people. And this is

  242. what John was stating concerning the reality

  243. of, am I walking as Christ walked? And if I am

  244. walking as Christ walked, I will not be a stumbling

  245. block. Nor will I stumble in the dark as if I

  246. can't see. Second, have you ever asked why did

  247. God give us his word and why Jesus is the Logos?

  248. Why is Jesus the word? Why did God give us the

  249. Bible? What's the purpose? In 2 Peter chapter

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  250. 1, 3 through 4, his divine power has granted

  251. to us all things that pertain to life and godliness.

  252. Through the knowledge of him who called us to

  253. his own glory and excellence. By which he has

  254. granted to us his precious and very great promises.

  255. So that through them you may become partakers

  256. of the divine nature. Having escaped from the

  257. corruption that is in the world because of sinful

  258. desire. Why has God given us his word? That we

  259. may know him. The one place you can come to know

  260. Jesus. This is important. Because far too often,

  261. we have this statement. You are the only Bible

  262. anybody will ever read. If you're the only Bible

  263. anybody will ever read, you're a terrible Bible.

  264. Because there's one thing I know about my Bible.

  265. It's the inerrant, infallible word of God. And

  266. I am not. And I'm a very inconsistent example

  267. sometimes of this word. So don't be the only

  268. Bible that someone will read. Be the one who

  269. will quote the Bible. Because man does not live

  270. by every example you show or that comes out of

  271. your mouth. Man lives by every word that comes

  272. out of the mouth of God. Think about that. You

  273. aren't. sharper than a two -edged sword, dividing

  274. soul and spirit, bone and marrow, judging the

  275. thoughts and intentions of the heart. The word

  276. is. And so when we look at this, we know why

  277. the word is important. We know why he's given

  278. it to us. As a matter of fact, in 1 John chapter

  279. 12, verse 14, 12 and 4, chapter 2, sorry. 1 John

    1 John 2:12–14

  280. chapter 2, verse 12 through 14. Listen to what

  281. John states here. I am writing to you, little

  282. children, because your sins are forgiven. I want

  283. you to get this term. What happens here is many

  284. pastors will go, oh, do a little, they'll do

  285. a children's, little children's corner thing

  286. and they'll go, listen, little children. This

  287. isn't John writing to little kids. This is John

  288. writing to you. Because Jesus calls you children.

  289. He calls me child. He calls you child. Those

  290. who believe in his name have been given the right

  291. to become a child of God. We are children. And

  292. he's implying here the issue of immaturity. Little

  293. children. Little children don't know much. So

  294. he's implying that for those who are just starting

  295. off in their Christian walk, who are immature

  296. in the faith, The one thing that is the reminder

  297. for you is that you are forgiven. That's the

  298. simplest thing, right? For a child, they want

  299. to know that mom and dad aren't upset. That's

  300. what he's implying here. I'm writing to you,

  301. little children, to you. And I'm a little child,

  302. to be honest with you. You're like, you're a

  303. pastor. You shouldn't be looking. There's a lot

  304. of things I'm immature in, a lot of things I'm

  305. mature in. How about the things I'm not maturing?

  306. I got some work to do. So he says, I'm writing

  307. to you little children because your sins are

  308. forgiven. This word sins is harmatia. And the

  309. reason why this word is important is because

  310. it's where we get the word harmatology from,

  311. which is the study of sin. It's the doctrine

  312. of sin. And this word is important because we

  313. need to know why we're forgiven or what we're

  314. forgiven from, which is our sins. And the word

  315. forgiven here means to send away. As far as the

  316. east is from the west. The deepest part of the

  317. ocean. Christ has sent away your sin. He has

  318. removed it. And when he has removed it, for your

  319. sake? No. For his name's sake. For his name's

  320. sake, you are forgiven. It's his name is on this

  321. work. And what's interesting, he says, this word

  322. sake means on account of his name, we have obtained

  323. something. It's the name of Christ that you have

  324. obtained forgiveness. It's on account of his

  325. name. It's on account of his name that you are

  326. considered the righteousness of God. It's on

  327. the count of his name that you are. are delivered.

  328. It's on account of his name that you are redeemed.

  329. It's on account of his name that you are regenerated,

  330. justified, sanctified. His name, it's on account

  331. of his name that you are all these things. And

  332. in John 1, 12, but to all who did receive him,

  333. who believe in his name. He gave the right to

  334. become children of God. On account of his name,

  335. you're a child of the living God. It's his name.

  336. And there is power in the name. In Acts 10 .43,

  337. to him all the prophets bear witness that everyone

  338. who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins

  339. through his name. You have been forgiven. Why?

  340. Because his name is God saves. That's his name.

  341. His name is God forgives. That's his name. His

  342. name is the righteous one. God the righteous

  343. one. That's his name. His name is God heals.

  344. That's his name. I am the bread. I am the everlasting

  345. water. That's his name. What a wonderful name.

  346. In 1 John 1 .1. Well, let me just do this. Verse

  347. 13, I'm sorry. I'm writing to you fathers because

  348. you know him. Now, I shared this earlier. When

  349. we lived in Delaware and my kids first learned

  350. father and mother in Greek, they'd never stopped

  351. saying it to me. So they wouldn't call me dad

  352. or pops or they'd call me pater. Because that's

  353. what father is in Greek. And they do it with

  354. the typical real bad English. It's not like they're

  355. Hispanic. They should know how to roll the R's.

  356. Pater. But they don't do that. They go, hey,

  357. pater. Pater. It's true. But it's good. What's

  358. implied here is that he's implying maturity.

  359. So you see the extreme. You see little children

  360. immature. Here, a father is seen as mature. The

  361. one who is the caregiver, the mature. And a father

  362. implies that we know things. What do we know

  363. as fathers? You know him who was from the beginning.

  364. We know him. And that's why in 1 John 1, which

  365. I read earlier, that which was from the beginning,

  366. which you have heard. which we have seen with

  367. our own eyes, which we have looked upon and have

  368. touched with our own hands concerning life. We

  369. know him. And we know we know them. It's sort

  370. of like when you come home and your kids are

  371. like really little. I used to go through this.

  372. Now my kids never rush the door. I walk in, Mocha

  373. shows up. My dog. She's like. You know, she's

  374. wiggling and, but she knows me. I wish my kids

  375. knew me like that. Right? But what happens is

  376. they hear the voice of the father and they come

  377. running in. Dad's home. Pater. And they get excited.

  378. And that's the implication here. That little

  379. children know him. My sheep know me and they

  380. know my voice. And he even says to Philip, Philip

  381. goes, show us the father. And he says, Philip,

  382. have you, have I been with you so long that you

  383. still don't know me? You should know me. And

  384. we know because he also then says to Philip,

  385. you know him and have seen him. And then he writes

  386. to the young people, the young adults. Not really

  387. to the young adults, it's to us. We are fathers

  388. and mothers. We are mature and we are also little

  389. children. And there are times when we are also

  390. young adults. Young men and young women. I'm

  391. writing to you, young men, because you have overcome

  392. the evil one. Interesting that they put the word

  393. one in there. Because I really don't want to

  394. just overcome the devil. Like, what is that?

  395. How about if I overcome the evil that's in me?

  396. To overcome sin. I want to know that I have overcome

  397. evil. And that's what John is implying here.

  398. This is not particularly talking about the devil,

  399. though we have overcome the devil. The question

  400. is, have you overcome the evil that is present

  401. there? And the way we overcome is that we are

  402. strong in the Lord. In Ephesians 6 .10, finally

  403. be strong in the Lord and in the strength of

  404. his might. I don't want to just be strong in

  405. the Lord and in the strength of his might when

  406. I have to deal with the devil, which barely ever

  407. happens. How about being strong in the Lord and

  408. in the strength of his might when I look at myself

  409. in the mirror and I have to deal with my junk?

  410. And I go, why do I keep doing the things I don't

  411. want to do, but the things I hate I keep on doing?

  412. Because I have not, because I haven't realized

  413. that I have overcome the evil already. And that's

  414. why Paul states in Ephesians 6 .10, finally be

  415. strong in the Lord and in strength of his might.

  416. So this implication of being a young man and

  417. a young woman is also implying this understanding

  418. of what it means to overcome. If you want to

  419. overcome, you must be self -controlled. Older

  420. men teach the younger men to be self -controlled.

  421. We know what the fruit of the Spirit is. The

  422. fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience,

  423. kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,

  424. and self -control. Self -control. Is the strength

  425. of the Lord and his might on display. I have

  426. truly overcome evil. And then he says again,

  427. I write to you children. Because you know the

  428. father. Yes, we do know him. Which I had said

  429. earlier. As a child, as a father walks in the

  430. door from a hard day at work. And they hear dad's

  431. voice. They come running. Because they know him.

  432. Now, for those of us who are fathers of girls,

  433. they know exactly what to do. Being jerks. They're

  434. being jerks. Because they know. They take advantage

  435. of dad. Because we just, that's my baby girl.

  436. Boys, we just like toughen up and suck it up.

  437. Let's go. Be a man. Girls are like, we melt.

  438. It's not fair. But that's the implication here.

  439. We know the father. We know we can go to him

  440. and sit before him and ask of him and he will

  441. give and seek and we will find because the father

  442. wants to give good gifts. So as children, we

  443. know the father. Verse 14, I write to you fathers

  444. because you know him. who was from the beginning.

  445. And again, he brings us back to the same understanding.

  446. Not only do the children know the heavenly father,

  447. but the fathers know the heavenly father because

  448. he's from the beginning. And I love this statement

  449. here. It's the reminder when Jesus says, I am

  450. the alpha and omega. He is the everlasting father.

  451. We know him. He is in you. He is light present

  452. in you. We know him. I write to you, young men,

  453. because you are strong. I kind of like that.

  454. As children, we depend on the father to be our

  455. strength. As fathers, we know him and we've learned

  456. to grow and know that he is all he says he is.

  457. As young men, We need to be reminded. Why? Because

  458. young people think they are invincible, but they're

  459. not. So again, John is reminding them. I'm writing

  460. to you, young men, young women, young people,

  461. because you are strong in Christ. Why are you

  462. strong in Christ? Because the word of God abides

  463. in you. Christ lives in you. His word is present

  464. in you and he is present in you. And you have

  465. overcome evil. It's more than just the evil one.

  466. And this is important because we have settled

  467. that our battle is with a fallen angel. That's

  468. bad theology. We get to blame. The creature.

  469. It's the devil's fault. The devil made me do

  470. it. And here the reality is, if we overcome,

  471. we have overcome evil. How have we overcome evil?

  472. I asked the question earlier. Why did God give

  473. us his word? Because it requires that I read

  474. it. What good is the word? If it's closed, it's

  475. sitting on your end table. What good is the word

  476. if I don't have a Bible app on my phone or it's

  477. off? What good is the word? What good is the

  478. word if you don't read it? Why is John saying

  479. I'm writing to you? Because he's telling them

  480. you have to read. I'm writing to you that you

  481. may read it so that you will know. The question

  482. is, do you know? Do you read it? Or do you just

  483. come on Sunday because you think Sunday's enough?

  484. It's enough word for me. I get my word on Sunday

  485. morning and I go home and I'm good for the rest

  486. of the week. Because such and such gave a good

  487. message or I learned this. No, man does not live

  488. by bread alone, but by every word that comes

  489. from the mouth of God. And you have heard from

  490. many pastors. I'm sure even I've said it, right?

  491. If you feed your physical body, you got to feed

  492. your spiritual body. I mean, after all, we don't

  493. want to be spiritually initiated. It's more than

  494. that. The very life of being comes from God's

  495. mouth. And he, in his wisdom and kindness and

  496. goodness, has given us his word, which he has

  497. written through men for you to read. Spend time

  498. in it. If you read one chapter, it'll take you

  499. less than five minutes. Even if you listen to

  500. it. And my challenge to you is if you are going

  501. to read it, read it out loud so you hear yourself.

  502. Because faith comes from a hearing and hearing

  503. that of the word of Christ. How important is

  504. the word to you? Or as I said to the young ones,

  505. is it boring? Granted, the begats are hard to

  506. get through. But there's a reason why it's there.

  507. And all the begats give you life. So enjoy reading

  508. the begats. As you get through the begats, you

  509. move on to another thing. But all of it's important.

  510. All of it's important. All of it is life -giving.

  511. How important is the Word to you? We are a Word

  512. -centered church because we are Christ -centered

  513. people. Be in the Word. Read it. Because He gave

  514. it to you. Father, I want to thank you so much

  515. for your goodness and faithfulness. Thank you

  516. for your word. Thank you for what you're doing

  517. in our lives. Lord, I do pray that you would

  518. give us a hunger and thirst for your word, but

  519. that we, when we are initiated and we are not

  520. hungry because we have gone beyond the spiritual

  521. pain of hunger, where we have just surrendered

  522. to a life of lifelessness. I pray that you would

  523. wake us up through your word. I have hidden your

  524. word in my heart that I might not sin against

  525. you. How can a young man keep his way pure by

  526. living according to your word? Lord, I thank

  527. you and praise you for your word. And I most

  528. of all thank you and praise you for you, the

  529. living and true God, the one whom we worship.

  530. And thank you that you have given us an opportunity

  531. to know you, not only in spirit, but also in

  532. truth.
