  1. As part of our series, looking at lessons that we might learn from the early church,

  2. as presented in the Bible and the book of Acts,

  3. we're thinking today about what it might mean as a church today

  4. to live out a calling in both fear and freedom.

  5. When you hear those words, fear and freedom,

  6. then probably instinctively we would say, well, how do those two go together?

  7. One seems a very positive concept, the other seems very negative.

  8. How can it be as a Christian that we're called to live in fear and freedom?

  9. What I want to suggest to you is every single one of us has fears.

  10. We all have fears of some kind.

  11. At times they may really surface in our lives, and when that happens, it's ugly.

  12. It's horrible.

  13. At least a certain type of fear is.

  14. But with faith in God, we discover a new sense of fear, a different type of fear,

  15. a fear that's a good fear, a positive one, a healthy one.

  16. And when we discover that sense of fear, it puts all others in perspective and we find freedom.

  17. What is it that you have as your negative type of fear?

  18. We'll come back to that right at the end when we come to pray.

  19. First, a story.

  20. I love today's Bible reading.

  21. I love it because I find it so difficult.

  22. It's one of those stories that is definitely not an easy one to read.

  23. It's not easy to swallow.

  24. It's not a fluffy reading.

  25. It's a jagged, edged reading because it's so challenging.

  26. There's a story of three ministers that met together,

  27. and they were discussing, arguing would be a better word,

  28. about the best way of funding the church.

  29. And they got on to the subject of offerings on a Sunday.

  30. And one of them said, well, you know, we tend to,

  31. we're sort of phasing out having any sense of offering,

  32. but we do still encourage people to give through using the envelopes

  33. and putting a check and gift-aiding it and putting it in an envelope

  34. because that's really the way to go.

  35. And another one, another minister said,

  36. oh, actually, you're a little bit behind the times there.

  37. We actually encourage everyone to give by standing order.

  38. That's a much more efficient way.

  39. And gift-aided as well, of course.

  40. The third minister said, oh, actually, I totally disagree.

  41. We still have cash, and we insist on cash offerings.

  42. And what I like to do is I like to physically get the plate passed around

  43. and then take it in my hands, and right at the end,

  44. I throw the thing as hard as I can up into the air.

  45. As I pray, receive, oh, Lord, all of these gifts

  46. that these fine, generous people have offered to you.

  47. And if it's your desire, dear Lord, to bless me as their pastor today,

  48. then in your sovereign and miraculous strength and power,

  49. I beseech thee to rain back on me all that you want me

  50. to put into my personal bank account.

  51. The story that we have this morning is about the way

  52. in which the early church structured their giving.

  53. We see mind-blowing generosity of people brought everything they had

  54. and laid it before God in his service, his kingdom,

  55. and of his church here on earth.

  56. And it would be a great passage, perhaps, to use

  57. if our subject this morning was about money and how we handle it

  58. and how we offer it in the Lord's service.

  59. But that's not actually our subject.

  60. You see, I want to suggest to you that this story,

  61. whilst it is about that subject,

  62. I think there is something even deeper than that going on here

  63. that it exposes.

  64. It's about truth and integrity and a sense of what it means

  65. to have that godly fear that brings with it a new sense of freedom.

  66. Let's just rewind some 2,000-odd years back to this reading

  67. that we've had this morning.

  68. The church was very, very young.

  69. It was still in its infancy.

  70. Living very, very close to Jesus' historic resurrection.

  71. The Holy Spirit had come.

  72. The people that we are reading about here

  73. are the first generation of Christian believers.

  74. The gospel was literally in their hands.

  75. Were it not for these people,

  76. the New Testament would not have been written.

  77. And they had an agreed understanding

  78. over how they would live

  79. and ensure that all the needs were met.

  80. I want to suggest that Ananias and Sapphira's wrongdoing

  81. was not that they had sold and held back money,

  82. although that is what the reading is telling us,

  83. but that there's something even below that,

  84. namely that they had broken trust.

  85. They had decided, maybe unwittingly,

  86. but in a kind of casual way,

  87. that they didn't need to live by the same frame of reference

  88. that had been agreed upon.

  89. I've come across two interpretations

  90. of what is perhaps the hardest part of this passage,

  91. namely that the two figures there,

  92. Ananias and Sapphira,

  93. that they dropped down dead.

  94. The first interpretation is that they were quite literally,

  95. supernaturally struck down.

  96. The second interpretation is that

  97. upon realising the seriousness,

  98. the gravity of what they had done,

  99. they were so overwhelmed by fear

  100. that they collapsed and died.

  101. We can neither prove nor disprove

  102. which of those interpretations is the truth,

  103. but either way,

  104. they still raise exactly the same theme,

  105. and it is this.

  106. It is fear.

  107. There is such a thing as a healthy sense of fear.

  108. And these words,

  109. the events in this story,

  110. expose the reality that

  111. things go wrong

  112. when we live by the wrong type of fear.

  113. Now let's just think about that theme of fear,

  114. fear as a healthy thing.

  115. Or rather,

  116. let's think of an unhealthy sense of fear.

  117. The sense of fear that has to do with dread.

  118. The sense that drives people away from God

  119. because they fear that God is such a terrible,

  120. terrible, vindictive being.

  121. You know, whatever else,

  122. that kind of guilt-inducing,

  123. scaremongering fear

  124. is not the type of fear that the gospel is about.

  125. It can't be.

  126. Because John tells us that there is no fear in love.

  127. Perfect love drives out fear.

  128. So whatever else fear means,

  129. it doesn't mean that

  130. when we're talking about the kind

  131. that is healthy

  132. and that God desires of us.

  133. God is an awful God.

  134. A-W-E

  135. or full.

  136. Not an awful God.

  137. A-W-F-U-R.

  138. So what might be

  139. that sense of

  140. awe-inducing,

  141. awe-inspiring,

  142. healthy,

  143. wholesome,

  144. helpful,

  145. life-giving,

  146. energy-breathing,

  147. Holy Spirit instilled fear

  148. be about.

  149. A number of years ago,

  150. there was a theologian

  151. called H.H. Farmer.

  152. And H.H. Farmer,

  153. he was a biblical scholar,

  154. would say to his students,

  155. you can't be pally

  156. with God.

  157. And they used to,

  158. the students

  159. under H.H. Farmer,

  160. used to,

  161. they coined the phrase,

  162. they used to say,

  163. you can't be pally

  164. with the farmer.

  165. Because he had said,

  166. you cannot be pally

  167. with God.

  168. And when he said that,

  169. you can't be pally

  170. with God,

  171. what he wasn't doing

  172. was denying

  173. the importance of the sense

  174. of the personal relationship

  175. with God,

  176. which is central

  177. to the Christian gospel.

  178. He wasn't denying that.

  179. But what he was warning of us

  180. was the danger

  181. of embracing a gospel

  182. that so,

  183. so emphasizes

  184. the personal

  185. that we lose sight

  186. of the sense of mystery

  187. and the power of God.

  188. You see,

  189. first and last

  190. and everything in between,

  191. being a Christian

  192. isn't just about

  193. knowing about God,

  194. it's about knowing God,

  195. it's about loving God,

  196. it's about living

  197. that relationship

  198. with God

  199. in a very deep,

  200. real,

  201. meaningful

  202. and personal way.

  203. It's about knowing

  204. Jesus as your friend,

  205. it's about knowing God

  206. as your father,

  207. it's about knowing him

  208. and listening for him

  209. in our daily lives

  210. and having that relationship

  211. that is built on love

  212. and grace and peace.

  213. But when we use

  214. all of that language,

  215. if we're going to be

  216. true to scripture,

  217. if we're to be authentic

  218. with it,

  219. what it doesn't mean

  220. is that it's just

  221. a casual thing

  222. by which there is

  223. no sense of mystery.

  224. And when H.H. Farmer

  225. said,

  226. you can't

  227. or you shouldn't

  228. be pally with God,

  229. I think that is what

  230. he was driving us towards.

  231. You see,

  232. there is such a thing

  233. as an important,

  234. helpful kind of fear.

  235. Think of fire.

  236. Now, fire

  237. can be

  238. one of the greatest,

  239. most helpful resources.

  240. It can save life.

  241. It can keep us warm.

  242. It can be creative.

  243. It can kill off germs.

  244. But if it's not treated

  245. with anything other

  246. than fear and respect,

  247. it can kill us.

  248. A major challenge

  249. to us today

  250. as a church

  251. in the widest

  252. global sense,

  253. I would suggest,

  254. is

  255. that we recapture

  256. such radical respect

  257. and recognition

  258. of God's power.

  259. That God

  260. blesses us

  261. and God longs us

  262. to know his blessing.

  263. But as Christians,

  264. we need

  265. to relearn

  266. the importance

  267. of being able

  268. to carry

  269. a full cup

  270. with a steady hand.

  271. these words

  272. of Scripture

  273. today

  274. bring us

  275. to that point

  276. where we are

  277. called to

  278. rediscover

  279. something

  280. of what it means

  281. to live in a wholesome

  282. and healthy

  283. and constructive

  284. kind of fear.

  285. And that means

  286. rediscovering

  287. the sense

  288. of the reality

  289. of prayer

  290. and expectation

  291. that when we pray,

  292. something genuinely

  293. supernatural

  294. is taking place.

  295. There's a

  296. story of

  297. three

  298. religious leaders

  299. meeting together

  300. discussing the best

  301. positions for prayer.

  302. And this conversation

  303. was taking place

  304. in a room

  305. that happened

  306. to have

  307. a phone

  308. connection,

  309. their landline,

  310. and in the background

  311. was a man

  312. repairing

  313. the

  314. phone line

  315. line,

  316. the landline

  317. connection.

  318. Well,

  319. one of the

  320. leaders there

  321. was saying,

  322. well,

  323. I believe

  324. that when you

  325. pray,

  326. there is only

  327. one way

  328. to pray

  329. and that

  330. is by

  331. kneeling.

  332. That's the

  333. way to

  334. pray

  335. with dignity.

  336. Another

  337. leader was

  338. there and

  339. said,

  340. no,

  341. no,

  342. no,

  343. I don't

  344. agree with

  345. that at

  346. all.

  347. It is a

  348. far better

  349. way

  350. to pray

  351. with your

  352. arms

  353. outstretched

  354. looking

  355. upwards.

  356. That

  357. is the

  358. best way

  359. to pray.

  360. There

  361. was another

  362. leader there

  363. that said,

  364. no,

  365. no,

  366. no,

  367. the best

  368. way to

  369. pray is

  370. prostrate.

  371. You

  372. should lie

  373. down on

  374. the floor

  375. with your

  376. face flat

  377. out of

  378. respect.

  379. The

  380. telephone

  381. repair guy

  382. couldn't

  383. help overhearing

  384. the conversation

  385. and just as

  386. he was

  387. leaving,

  388. he chimed

  389. in,

  390. well,

  391. the best

  392. praying that

  393. I've ever

  394. done was

  395. when I

  396. was hanging

  397. upside down

  398. from a

  399. telegraph pole.

  400. Isn't

  401. there a

  402. real sense

  403. in which

  404. we pray

  405. in a

  406. way that

  407. is far

  408. more

  409. dynamic,

  410. and by

  411. that what

  412. I mean

  413. is personally

  414. meaningful

  415. and engaging,

  416. where we are

  417. truly paying

  418. attention when

  419. we are on

  420. the edge,

  421. when we are

  422. in those

  423. situations

  424. where we

  425. are feeling

  426. vulnerable.

  427. And notice,

  428. well,

  429. you won't

  430. have noticed

  431. because it

  432. wasn't projected

  433. onto the

  434. screen,

  435. but in

  436. the book

  437. of Acts,

  438. the verse

  439. immediately

  440. preceding the

  441. story that

  442. we read

  443. this morning,

  444. we're told

  445. in verse 31

  446. of Acts chapter

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  447. 4,

  448. just before

  449. we get all

  450. of the other

  451. story about

  452. how the

  453. believers shared

  454. their possessions

  455. and lived

  456. sacrificially

  457. together,

  458. it says that

  459. the believers

  460. were gathered

  461. together and

  462. they were

  463. praying,

  464. and it

  465. says,

  466. after they

  467. prayed,

  468. the place

  469. where they

  470. were meeting

  471. was shaken,

  472. and they

  473. were all

  474. filled with

  475. the Holy

  476. Spirit and

  477. spoke the

  478. word of

  479. God boldly.

  480. that's the

  481. context of

  482. everything else

  483. that happens,

  484. that was the

  485. thing that

  486. underpinned the

  487. life of the

  488. early church,

  489. that they

  490. had that

  491. sense that

  492. prayer isn't

  493. just a

  494. religious

  495. activity,

  496. it's a

  497. sense of

  498. knowing the

  499. reality of

  500. God's

  501. presence,

  502. knowing and

  503. in an

  504. expectant

  505. way that

  506. God is a

  507. God to be

  508. feared in

  509. a positive

  510. kind of way,

  511. in the same

  512. way that we

  513. fear something

  514. awesomely

  515. powerful like

  516. fire.

  517. God is

  518. there on

  519. the move,

  520. calling us to

  521. be a part of

  522. his movement,

  523. and we are

  524. called to

  525. live in that

  526. sense of

  527. fear, but

  528. that fear

  529. that brings

  530. with it a

  531. new freedom.

  532. the church

  533. is ill-served

  534. when we

  535. dilute or

  536. deny the

  537. demands of

  538. the gospel,

  539. and we

  540. lose sight of

  541. the importance

  542. of that

  543. fear that

  544. actually sets

  545. us free.

  546. One last

  547. story.

  548. thing.

  549. I read a

  550. while ago

  551. of one

  552. way in

  553. which in

  554. some parts

  555. of the

  556. world they

  557. train

  558. elephants.

  559. You never

  560. know when

  561. you might

  562. need that

  563. piece of

  564. information.

  565. And what

  566. they do is

  567. they take

  568. the elephant

  569. and they

  570. take a

  571. very,

  572. very strong

  573. chain and

  574. attach one

  575. end of the

  576. chain to a

  577. very, very

  578. strong tree and

  579. the other

  580. end to one

  581. of the feet

  582. of the

  583. elephant.

  584. And just

  585. out of the

  586. elephant's

  587. reach they

  588. place some

  589. food.

  590. Now for

  591. several days

  592. the elephant

  593. will try

  594. really hard

  595. to get to

  596. the food.

  597. But every

  598. time it

  599. does so it

  600. tugs on the

  601. chain and

  602. it causes

  603. pain and

  604. it can't

  605. quite reach

  606. the food.

  607. This goes

  608. on for

  609. several days

  610. until the

  611. elephant has

  612. come to

  613. accept that

  614. it cannot

  615. reach the

  616. food.

  617. It accepts

  618. its limitations.

  619. It has

  620. been conditioned.

  621. And at

  622. that point

  623. they can

  624. then remove

  625. the chain

  626. and replace

  627. it with a

  628. rope.

  629. Now the

  630. rope actually

  631. isn't that

  632. strong and

  633. the elephant

  634. could easily

  635. snap it at

  636. any point.

  637. However by

  638. this stage it

  639. has been so

  640. trained and

  641. conditioned to

  642. accept what

  643. it thinks are

  644. its limitations

  645. that it

  646. will simply

  647. not try to

  648. stray away

  649. from where

  650. it is.

  651. However

  652. there's one

  653. exception

  654. and that is

  655. if fire

  656. breaks out

  657. near where

  658. the elephant

  659. is.

  660. Because at

  661. that point

  662. the elephant's

  663. instinctive

  664. fear of

  665. fire will

  666. overtake its

  667. fear of

  668. pain or

  669. indeed

  670. anything

  671. else and

  672. it will

  673. just bolt.

  674. The rope

  675. will snap

  676. and apparently

  677. if that

  678. happens you

  679. will never

  680. ever train

  681. or condition

  682. that particular

  683. elephant again.

  684. The fear

  685. of God

  686. in the

  687. best,

  688. most wholesome,

  689. positive and

  690. life-giving way

  691. brings us

  692. that kind

  693. of freedom.

  694. It puts

  695. all other

  696. fears into

  697. perspective and

  698. holds them in

  699. check.

  700. Sure,

  701. things happen

  702. in our

  703. lives that

  704. make us

  705. feel afraid,

  706. that make us

  707. worry,

  708. that will

  709. from time

  710. to time

  711. keep us

  712. awake at

  713. night.

  714. But they're

  715. given a

  716. new perspective

  717. for ultimately

  718. God.

  719. God is

  720. there.

  721. God is

  722. the one

  723. who is

  724. all-powerful.

  725. And whilst

  726. there are

  727. things in

  728. this life

  729. that do

  730. not make

  731. sense to

  732. us right

  733. now,

  734. things that

  735. we can't

  736. quite get

  737. our minds

  738. around,

  739. things that

  740. come our

  741. way,

  742. things that

  743. worry about

  744. us,

  745. we know

  746. in the

  747. depths of

  748. our being

  749. that God

  750. is bigger

  751. and greater

  752. than it all.

  753. And when we

  754. have that

  755. sense of

  756. respect,

  757. that sense

  758. of healthy,

  759. wholesome fear

  760. for him,

  761. everything else

  762. is put in its

  763. place.

  764. things.

  765. So let's

  766. come back

  767. to that

  768. question that

  769. I started

  770. with.

  771. What sort

  772. of things

  773. do we

  774. live in

  775. fear of?
