  1. Well, good morning, everyone.

  2. Those of you that don't know me, my name's David,

  3. and it's my privilege and pleasure, really,

  4. to be opening up that quite wacky reading

  5. from Revelation this morning.

  6. And I thought we might begin by getting our brains

  7. warmed up with a bit of a quiz.

  8. And so I'm going to show you a picture from a film,

  9. kind of a screenshot from a film,

  10. and I wonder if you could kind of shout out,

  11. you don't need to put your hands up,

  12. and just yell out what film you think it is from.

  13. And we could get a bit competitive.

  14. We could have this side of the church

  15. versus this side of the church,

  16. and the winning side will get to go for coffee first.

  17. Oh, yeah.

  18. There are obviously the holy ones amongst you

  19. that will want to serve by letting the others go first,

  20. and the wonderful team that serve us every week

  21. by giving us caffeine.

  22. Bless you guys.

  23. So let's see how we go.

  24. This is the first one.

  25. Day After Tomorrow, 1-0.

  26. Okay, it is the film Day After Tomorrow.

  27. A bit old.

  28. Being an ex-geography teacher,

  29. this was my go-to in the last week of term.

  30. Here you go, kids.

  31. Let's watch this.

  32. Do a mind map,

  33. and we'll discuss whatever it's all about,

  34. global warming.

  35. But yeah, if you've seen it,

  36. the cataclysmic end of the world,

  37. practically, through all things weather-related.

  38. Brilliant.

  39. Next one.

  40. Yes.

  41. Yes.

  42. 2012.

  43. 2012.

  44. 2012.

  45. 2012.

  46. 2012.

  47. 2012.

  48. 2012.

  49. Kind of similar ilk between...

  50. 1-1.

  51. 1-1.

  52. Yep.

  53. A similar ilk maybe with the Day After Tomorrow vibe

  54. with lots of weather and earthquakes

  55. kind of heralding the end of the world as we know it.

  56. Brilliant.

  57. 2012.

  58. 2012.

  59. Next one.

  60. I am legend.

  61. Oh, I think someone got it at the back there,

  62. I think.

  63. I think it was this side.

  64. Sorry, guys.

  65. I think it was.

  66. I am legend.

  67. A bit spooky, this one, actually.

  68. And if you've seen it,

  69. it's got a really good message

  70. about salvation and resurrection, actually.

  71. It's got quite a good Christian message in it.

  72. But I am legend.

  73. Will Smith is kind of the last man,

  74. so he thinks.

  75. Spoiler alert, sorry.

  76. The last man in New York.

  77. But it's called I am legend.

  78. It's a good film.

  79. Bit scary.

  80. Hunger Games.

  81. Hunger Games.

  82. Yeah, we had it.

  83. 2-2.

  84. It's getting close.

  85. The Hunger Games are kind of three films

  86. in this kind of trilogy.

  87. And it's not quite the end of the world,

  88. but it kind of is this apocalyptic,

  89. one kind of section of the world

  90. controlling all the other sections

  91. through violence.

  92. And yeah, it's, again,

  93. quite a good film, actually.

  94. I think there's one more.

  95. Divergent.

  96. Yes, 3-2.

  97. Well done.

  98. Give us a round of applause.

  99. So if you want to go first for coffee

  100. at the end, you are allowed.

  101. But if you feel the Lord saying,

  102. actually, you should bless your brothers

  103. and sisters on this side,

  104. it's up to you.

  105. I'm not here to judge.

  106. But yes, Divergent.

  107. A kind of similar vibe

  108. to maybe The Hunger Games

  109. in terms of this weird kind of

  110. end of the world

  111. or end of society kind of thing.

  112. Very good, David, you might be saying.

  113. Yeah, but what on earth has this got to do

  114. with our reading from Revelation?

  115. Well, there's kind of an overarching theme,

  116. actually, with some of these films.

  117. And Hollywood has got this nailed, hasn't it?

  118. Hollywood thinks,

  119. I know what makes a good film.

  120. End of the world stuff.

  121. Violence.

  122. Warfare.

  123. Conflict.

  124. Power.

  125. Cataclysmic events that no one has seen before.

  126. Powerful oligarchs taking advantage over the weak.

  127. The poor downtrodden struggling to survive.

  128. Guns and weapons are a necessity.

  129. Control and authority are the order of the day,

  130. according to Hollywood.

  131. And actually, it's not just Hollywood, is it?

  132. We've seen in the last week or so

  133. how those with lots of money and lots of power

  134. know how to get out of paying their taxes

  135. with offshore havens,

  136. while us poor, weak lot have to pay our taxes.

  137. We've seen how powerful men in Hollywood

  138. have allegedly taken advantage of weaker men and women

  139. in that kind of sphere of influence,

  140. and they're in less privileged positions.

  141. And if you'd excuse me for getting political,

  142. just a second,

  143. I won't do it for very long,

  144. but we have someone across the pond

  145. who is the President of the United States

  146. who can't go through a day

  147. without tweeting that he has the biggest nuclear weapons

  148. or the best army

  149. or better weapons than anyone else,

  150. especially North Korea.

  151. Supremacy is all about firepower.

  152. And as we remembered earlier,

  153. there were so many occasions in the past

  154. where this has been true,

  155. where violence, warfare, conflict

  156. have brought countries and people

  157. and societies down to their knees.

  158. And Hollywood still continue to churn out

  159. these apocalyptic films, don't they?

  160. Violence wins, conflict wins,

  161. the powerful succeed,

  162. those of the greatest arsenal,

  163. the greatest firepower will be successful.

  164. But actually, as so often happens,

  165. when we read Scripture,

  166. it says,

  167. no, actually there's a different way of looking at it.

  168. Well, you've got it wrong.

  169. That's not the way to do it.

  170. So if you've got a Bible

  171. or a tech Bible on your phone,

  172. you might want to think about Revelation 5.

  173. We're going to be kind of focusing around that.

  174. And Revelation is one of those books

  175. that has been kind of, I think,

  176. either ignored by churches

  177. because it's a bit too weird.

  178. In fact, a little helpful

  179. Reformation fact for you.

  180. Martin Luther didn't like Revelation very much.

  181. He didn't want it to be in the Bible.

  182. But towards the end of his life,

  183. he thought, actually, it's all right.

  184. We'll have it in.

  185. So Revelation's either been kind of ignored

  186. or shunned a bit.

  187. We might open it a bit,

  188. but not very much.

  189. Or maybe it's the other side of the spectrum.

  190. And some churches or Christian denominations

  191. maybe focus so much on this book of Revelation

  192. that they're able to tell you

  193. that the Lord Jesus Christ is returning

  194. next Thursday at 8.23 exactly.

  195. Get ready.

  196. Go and tell everyone.

  197. But actually, I think there's a lot

  198. we can learn from this book

  199. if we use it appropriately.

  200. You see, there are some people that say

  201. it's all in the past.

  202. Revelation is a book that's all about

  203. the second century

  204. because that's when it was written.

  205. So everything in there

  206. is about back then.

  207. We might be able to read it

  208. and learn a bit

  209. and kind of apply it a bit to our lives now,

  210. but not that much.

  211. It was for then.

  212. And there are other people that say,

  213. no, no, no, no, no.

  214. You've got it all wrong.

  215. It's all about the future.

  216. Every single part of it

  217. is about the second coming.

  218. And if you're clever enough

  219. and you can look at all the Cody bits,

  220. you can work out

  221. when Jesus is coming

  222. and when all that exciting stuff

  223. is going to happen.

  224. But I think actually,

  225. as so often is the case,

  226. there's kind of a middle ground here,

  227. that we can look at some parts of Revelation

  228. and we can say,

  229. actually, yeah,

  230. that kind of fits back in the second century.

  231. We can learn from it,

  232. but it's back then.

  233. And some of it we can look at

  234. and we can say,

  235. wow, that's the future.

  236. We're looking forward to the second coming

  237. of Jesus in his glory.

  238. That's great.

  239. And there are other parts of it

  240. that are almost timeless.

  241. I love the reading today

  242. of the elders worshipping

  243. at the throne of the Lamb.

  244. And I kind of think,

  245. I don't know how correct I am,

  246. but I love the idea

  247. of that just happening

  248. for eternity,

  249. forever and ever.

  250. That this morning when we came

  251. and we worshipped,

  252. we were joining in

  253. with the worship

  254. of the elders

  255. and the living creatures

  256. before the Lamb.

  257. Wow.

  258. But the first thing

  259. we need to admit, I think,

  260. is that Revelation

  261. is just a bit weird.

  262. You've got a prostitute.

  263. You've got a beast.

  264. You've got angels.

  265. You've got seals.

  266. You've got plagues.

  267. You've got, I mean,

  268. it sounds like quite a fun party,

  269. doesn't it?

  270. You've got all this weird stuff

  271. going on.

  272. What is it all about?

  273. Well, hopefully this morning

  274. we can unpack

  275. a tiny bit of it,

  276. Revelation 5,

  277. and maybe apply that

  278. to where we're at today

  279. in On Remembrance Sunday.

  280. So let's see where we are

  281. with chapter 5.

  282. John has written a letter

  283. to lots of different churches

  284. and then he's just been

  285. taken up into heaven.

  286. We don't know if that's

  287. a kind of spiritual vision

  288. that he's having

  289. or a more physical

  290. being taken up.

  291. But he's there.

  292. He's in heaven

  293. and this angel

  294. is almost giving him

  295. a guided tour.

  296. There's the canteen,

  297. there's his stuff, you know.

  298. He's being taken around

  299. the throne room of God.

  300. He's experienced the worship,

  301. he's seen what that's like,

  302. and the bit we're at today,

  303. this morning,

  304. is that John is presented

  305. with a scroll.

  306. It's almost like,

  307. in modern day,

  308. getting an email.

  309. You know,

  310. he's presented with a scroll,

  311. that's how they used to communicate

  312. in the second century.

  313. Great, let's open it.

  314. No one, we read,

  315. is worthy to open the scroll.

  316. It's been sealed seven times,

  317. it's got seven marks on it,

  318. it's got seven seals.

  319. You think of those wax seals

  320. on old envelopes.

  321. That's kind of what it's like.

  322. This is an important thing

  323. to open.

  324. We're not going to go today

  325. into what is in the scroll,

  326. because that gets even more wacky.

  327. We're going to think today

  328. just about the fact

  329. that no one,

  330. John can find,

  331. has the authority

  332. to open that scroll.

  333. And this is where it gets

  334. really interesting.

  335. Revelation 5, 7 and 8.

  336. Then one of the elders said to me,

  337. do not weep.

  338. Do not weep.

  339. The line of the tribe of Judah,

  340. the root of David,

  341. has triumphed.

  342. He is able to open the scroll

  343. and its seven seals.

  344. Great.

  345. The lion's here.

  346. Excellent.

  347. What does John see?

  348. Then I saw a lamb

  349. looking as if it had been slain.

  350. And it goes on to say

  351. where the lamb is

  352. and what it looks like.

  353. But it's so easy to miss that bit.

  354. The elder says,

  355. look, a lion.

  356. And John looks

  357. and he sees a lamb.

  358. It's so easy for us

  359. to skip over that

  360. and miss the significance

  361. of that moment.

  362. But let's think about it.

  363. Here is John.

  364. He's in desperate need

  365. of some authority,

  366. of some power,

  367. some strength

  368. to open

  369. whatever is in this scroll.

  370. And the angel says,

  371. don't worry,

  372. the lion's here.

  373. And this violent image

  374. of a lion

  375. echoes down

  376. throughout the Old Testament.

  377. Whenever you think

  378. about the lion

  379. or the lion of Judah,

  380. it talks about a warrior,

  381. a kind of warrior-type messiah

  382. who's good at fighting

  383. God's battle,

  384. unweaking vengeance.

  385. Formidable force.

  386. That's what you think of

  387. when you think of a lion.

  388. Fierce control,

  389. powerful nationalism.

  390. This is the power of Israel.

  391. Great.

  392. John turns round

  393. and he sees

  394. the opposite

  395. of a brave,

  396. formidable lion.

  397. He sees a half-dead lamb.

  398. The slot in the system

  399. that's been reserved

  400. for this lion

  401. is actually being filled

  402. by the slain lamb.

  403. The majestic,

  404. invincible,

  405. Aslan-type character

  406. has almost just been replaced

  407. by a half-dead

  408. Shaun the Sheep.

  409. What is this about?

  410. But this reading

  411. points us to where

  412. true power lies.

  413. All honour and authority

  414. is found

  415. not in the roaring lion

  416. that John heard,

  417. but in the lamb

  418. which is sacrificed.

  419. Jesus is both

  420. the lion of Judah

  421. and the lamb

  422. that was slain.

  423. He's not the lion

  424. when he's in a bad mood

  425. and the lamb

  426. when he's feeling quite nice.

  427. He's not the lion

  428. on a bad day

  429. and the lamb

  430. on a good day.

  431. He is the lion

  432. and the lamb.

  433. He's the roaring conqueror

  434. and he's also

  435. my and yours

  436. sacrificial offering.

  437. There is violence involved

  438. but it's not the violence

  439. of a lion

  440. that will inflict violence.

  441. It's the violence

  442. of a lamb

  443. who endures.

  444. It's not the violence

  445. of a lion

  446. which tears its prey

  447. to shreds.

  448. It's the violence

  449. of a lamb

  450. who endures

  451. that being torn

  452. to shreds

  453. for me

  454. and for you.

  455. And what is amazing

  456. is that this word

  457. slain

  458. is in the perfect tense

  459. which means

  460. that it happened once

  461. but its effect

  462. is ongoing.

  463. You see,

  464. the crucifixion

  465. of Jesus Christ

  466. was not just

  467. an event that happened

  468. and then

  469. it was superseded

  470. by the resurrection

  471. and then the ascension.

  472. Yeah,

  473. the crucifixion happened

  474. but look,

  475. he's alive now.

  476. Well,

  477. yes,

  478. that's true

  479. but the effect

  480. of his crucifixion

  481. goes on

  482. and on

  483. and on.

  484. Jesus Christ

  485. dying on the cross

  486. has cosmic effects

  487. on the universe

  488. throughout history.

  489. We learn to live

  490. free from the chains

  491. of sin.

  492. Yes,

  493. we mess up

  494. but the sacrifice

  495. of the Lamb of God

  496. at that point in time

  497. allows me,

  498. David Sims,

  499. 2,000 years later

  500. with all my mistakes

  501. all my sin

  502. all my temptation

  503. all my lusts

  504. all my problems

  505. my pride

  506. it allows me

  507. to nail that

  508. to the cross

  509. of Jesus

  510. and to fall

  511. to worship

  512. the slain Lamb.

  513. And John gives us

  514. an amazing description

  515. doesn't he

  516. of the Lamb-Lion

  517. and this is where

  518. Revelation gets a bit weird.

  519. I did find a few

  520. cool pictures

  521. I was going to show you

  522. but they're just a bit creepy

  523. but some people

  524. have drawn

  525. Jesus Christ

  526. as the Lamb

  527. with seven eyes

  528. and seven horns.

  529. It looks a bit like

  530. something out of a horror movie

  531. if I'm honest

  532. and I don't think

  533. that's what Jesus

  534. is going to look like

  535. when we meet him

  536. face to face.

  537. I think this is again

  538. a time when Revelation

  539. is being a bit more

  540. symbolic

  541. because you see

  542. the word seven

  543. symbolises perfection

  544. and Jesus has seven eyes

  545. the Lamb has seven eyes

  546. and seven horns

  547. this is ultimate perfection

  548. this is God

  549. identifying himself

  550. and saying actually

  551. this is the perfect way

  552. to conquer

  553. thank you very much

  554. and it's through

  555. sacrifice.

  556. The world says

  557. violence and muscle power

  558. but actually we

  559. as followers of the Lamb

  560. fall to worship

  561. the slain one.

  562. I wonder if you want

  563. to live in power

  564. this morning

  565. or power comes through

  566. worshipping

  567. the sacrificial Lamb.

  568. I wonder if you need

  569. to be a conqueror

  570. this morning

  571. while we conquer

  572. through worshipping

  573. the sacrifice

  574. of Jesus Christ.

  575. This is the topsy-turviness

  576. of the Kingdom

  577. of God.

  578. We read

  579. Revelation 5

  580. that a slain Lamb

  581. that is half dead

  582. is more powerful

  583. than the military

  584. nationalistic power

  585. of the lion.

  586. And when we think

  587. back to Jesus' life

  588. we see that lots

  589. of his teaching

  590. reinforces this point

  591. there's power

  592. through sacrifice.

  593. In Luke 22

  594. Jesus has just been

  595. betrayed by Judas

  596. and all the kind of

  597. priest soldiers

  598. come to arrest him

  599. with their swords

  600. and their shields

  601. and their spears

  602. and the disciples

  603. get a bit worried

  604. and one of them

  605. reaches out

  606. with his sword

  607. and cuts off

  608. one of the soldiers' ears.

  609. You would have thought

  610. of all times

  611. when self-defence

  612. was a good excuse

  613. this was it.

  614. Jesus knew

  615. that he was about

  616. to be taken off

  617. for an unfair trial.

  618. He was about

  619. to be crucified

  620. and yet what does

  621. Jesus do?

  622. Jesus says

  623. no, no, no, no

  624. that's not the way

  625. to do things

  626. and he actually

  627. heals

  628. the soldier's ear.

  629. Or in Matthew 5

  630. when Jesus talks

  631. about turning

  632. the other cheek

  633. when someone

  634. hits you

  635. on the right cheek.

  636. There's power

  637. in sacrifice.

  638. You see this morning

  639. we worship Jesus

  640. don't we?

  641. The lamb

  642. who was slain.

  643. The God

  644. who gave himself

  645. as an offering

  646. for us.

  647. And we know

  648. that this death

  649. was not the end.

  650. Revelation 5

  651. chapter 12

  652. says worthy

  653. is the lamb

  654. who was slain

  655. to receive

  656. power and wealth

  657. and wisdom

  658. and strength

  659. and honour

  660. and glory

  661. and praise.

  662. And every creature

  663. responds

  664. saying yes

  665. amen

  666. to him who sits

  667. on the throne

  668. be glory

  669. and power

  670. forever.

  671. You see

  672. this God

  673. that was crucified

  674. is now reigning.

  675. He is worthy

  676. of all honour

  677. and glory

  678. and power.

  679. Power is not found

  680. in which country

  681. has the best

  682. nuclear weapons.

  683. power isn't gained

  684. by shouting

  685. the loudest

  686. on Twitter.

  687. Power isn't found

  688. by finding clever ways

  689. of keeping your money

  690. to yourself

  691. and not having

  692. to pay your tax.

  693. True power

  694. is seen

  695. in the self-sacrifice

  696. of Jesus

  697. the slain lamb.

  698. And my final point

  699. is where John writes

  700. in verse 9

  701. because Jesus

  702. was slain

  703. and with his blood

  704. he purchased us

  705. for God

  706. persons from every tribe

  707. and language

  708. and people

  709. and nation.

  710. You have made them

  711. to be a kingdom

  712. and a priest

  713. to serve our God.

  714. This morning

  715. we are the kingdom

  716. of God.

  717. We are priests

  718. in the kingdom

  719. of God.

  720. The word kingdom

  721. that's a powerful word.

  722. That refers to

  723. the reign

  724. of Jesus Christ.

  725. It refers to

  726. his kingship

  727. his authority.

  728. It refers to

  729. the reign

  730. of the Messiah.

  731. But where does it

  732. come from?

  733. It comes from

  734. his sacrifice.

  735. That's where

  736. true power

  737. comes out of.

  738. The slaughter

  739. of the lamb

  740. means that we

  741. as followers

  742. of the slain lamb

  743. can partake

  744. in his kingdom.

  745. And being in his kingdom

  746. we pray for the sick

  747. and we see breakthrough.

  748. We prophesy

  749. into situations

  750. and we see

  751. powerful things

  752. happen.

  753. We take ground

  754. from Satan.

  755. We tell demons

  756. to go

  757. and in Jesus'

  758. name

  759. they go.

  760. And yet

  761. we realise

  762. that this isn't

  763. the end of the story

  764. is it?

  765. The kingdom is here

  766. but the kingdom

  767. is also coming.

  768. The rule and reign

  769. of Christ

  770. through his sacrifice

  771. is here

  772. but it's also

  773. not fully here.

  774. We see sickness.

  775. We see the effect

  776. of sin on the world.

  777. We see the effect

  778. of evil

  779. in a society

  780. where greed

  781. and money

  782. is almost rewarded.

  783. But that doesn't

  784. mean we stop

  785. prophesying

  786. into situations

  787. in the name

  788. of Jesus.

  789. It doesn't

  790. mean we stop

  791. commanding healing

  792. in Jesus' name.

  793. It doesn't

  794. mean we stop

  795. step by step

  796. taking ground

  797. from the devil.

  798. You see

  799. the lamb sacrifice

  800. happened once

  801. and for all

  802. but the effect

  803. of his sacrifice

  804. that keeps

  805. going.

  806. And I recognise

  807. that that's

  808. really tough

  809. for us

  810. that we know

  811. people

  812. we ourselves

  813. maybe really

  814. struggle

  815. with illness

  816. family situations

  817. certain weaknesses

  818. that we haven't

  819. seen breakthrough

  820. in years

  821. and years

  822. and we keep

  823. praying

  824. and we don't

  825. see that

  826. breakthrough.

  827. And it's not

  828. because we don't

  829. believe enough.

  830. That's not true.

  831. It's not because

  832. we don't have enough

  833. faith because it's

  834. not about our faith

  835. it's about what

  836. Jesus did.

  837. It's not because

  838. we don't pray

  839. hard enough.

  840. It's because we

  841. live in the now

  842. and the not yet

  843. of the rule

  844. and reign

  845. of Jesus.

  846. This morning

  847. with John

  848. may we

  849. keep our eyes

  850. fixed on the

  851. slain lamb

  852. and join with

  853. the angels

  854. who fall down

  855. and proclaim

  856. you are worthy

  857. of blessing

  858. and honour

  859. and glory.

  860. I really think

  861. that we're called

  862. as Christians

  863. to proclaim

  864. to a world

  865. that sees

  866. authority in terms

  867. of violence

  868. and strength

  869. that actually

  870. authority comes

  871. through sacrifice.

  872. It comes

  873. through the

  874. sacrifice

  875. of Jesus

  876. Christ.

  877. The only one

  878. the lamb

  879. was the only

  880. one found

  881. worthy to

  882. open the

  883. scroll.

  884. In a world

  885. that looks

  886. for military

  887. strength

  888. we preach

  889. the slain

  890. lamb.

  891. In a world

  892. where power

  893. so often

  894. comes with

  895. self-interest

  896. we preach

  897. the lamb

  898. of God

  899. self-sacrificed

  900. for us.

  901. To a world

  902. which seems

  903. to turn its

  904. back on God

  905. we say

  906. look

  907. we see

  908. the lion

  909. of Judah

  910. we see

  911. our powerful

  912. God

  913. in all

  914. his strength

  915. in all

  916. his authority

  917. and he

  918. comes

  919. as a

  920. slain

  921. lamb.

  922. He is

  923. the sacrifice

  924. for my

  925. sin.

  926. He is

  927. the one

  928. that bore

  929. my shame

  930. and brought

  931. me into

  932. relationship

  933. with him.
