  1. And this morning I was asked to speak on called to transforming encounters.

  2. Some of you might think, what does that mean?

  3. Some of you might think, oh, please don't ask me to have to go and speak to anyone and have a transforming encounter.

  4. And some of you might be thinking, yeah, let's go.

  5. I'm sure that's Dave Sims if he's in the room.

  6. But first of all, I think we need to look at what do we mean by transforming encounters?

  7. And what did this passage mean?

  8. Why, out of all of the transforming encounters that took place in the early church, was this one singled out?

  9. But first of all, I'd like to just show a little video clip and then I'd like to ask a couple of questions about it.

  10. Hey, life is crazy, is it not?

  11. I'm such a heavy tumour.

  12. How many people know who that lady is, have seen or heard or know anything about her?

  13. This was just a woman in America and she bought that mask for her children but it made her laugh.

  14. So in the car she videoed herself laughing in the Chewbacca mask because it made the sound of Chewbacca from Star Wars.

  15. And that clip of her in her car with the mask on went absolutely viral within hours.

  16. And she, as a result, she was on James Corden's Late Show.

  17. She was on Good Morning America.

  18. She was on Oprah Winfrey.

  19. She just went absolutely mega.

  20. She's written a book.

  21. It's just gone absolutely mental.

  22. Now, it turns out in her interviews that she is also a Christian and she does believe in, she's got a very sort of vibrant sense of humour.

  23. And I think God just used who she was naturally.

  24. The fact that none of you have heard about it kind of blows the first point of my sermon.

  25. But we'll forget about that.

  26. So anyway, I was going to ask you two questions, neither of which you will know the answer.

  27. So my question was going to be, what does that clip have to do with the sermon today?

  28. Well, the first point was her name's Candice.

  29. And the queen that the Ethiopian worked for, her title was the Candice of Ethiopia.

  30. The second was the fact that both Philip's message to the Ethiopian and her message on Facebook went viral.

  31. But they obviously went viral in completely different ways.

  32. So in the day when Philip met with the Ethiopian and had their transforming encounter, there was no internet, there was no mobile phone to video it and upload it to Facebook and Twitter.

  33. There were not even planes, trains and automobiles.

  34. And yet, their conversation spread the message of the gospel around the world.

  35. I want to look at how and why that happened.

  36. In order to do that, I felt like we needed to just have a quick whistle-stop tour through the early church.

  37. So Jesus has been crucified.

  38. He rose from the dead and he met with his disciples.

  39. They're all petrified in Jerusalem.

  40. And Jesus comes to them and he says,

  41. I'm going to go to my Father in heaven now.

  42. But you need to wait here and you are going to receive the Holy Spirit.

  43. And when you've received the Spirit, you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem.

  44. But also in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.

  45. If Jesus had come to us today to say that, he'd be saying,

  46. wait in Bristol, you'll receive the Holy Spirit,

  47. but you're going to be my witnesses in all in Bristol,

  48. but also in the whole of the southwest and even to the ends of the earth.

  49. But don't forget, they had no internet to just post online.

  50. So they probably had no idea how they were going to be witnesses to the ends of the earth.

  51. Nonetheless, they do what Jesus asked them.

  52. They wait in Jerusalem.

  53. They receive the Holy Spirit.

  54. And I'm sure some of you know the story.

  55. Amazing things begin to happen and the church begins to grow at a phenomenal rate.

  56. On the day they receive the Holy Spirit,

  57. Peter gets up to preach and 3,000 people give their life to God after that one sermon.

  58. So they begin to build community together

  59. and they begin to share fellowship with each other.

  60. They meet to pray.

  61. They meet to look at what God would want of their lives.

  62. And God continues to add daily people to this community that is growing alive in faith.

  63. They are so transformed themselves that the book of Acts tells us

  64. that they even begin to share their possessions.

  65. I think that's miraculous.

  66. I think that would take some really amazing transformation

  67. for us all here to suddenly get up and say,

  68. yeah, I've got a car, you can have it.

  69. Yeah, I don't need my house moving with us.

  70. We've got two spare bedrooms.

  71. They begin to share everything.

  72. They begin to sell everything they've got

  73. and they begin to give money to anyone who needs it.

  74. So first of all, they themselves are transformed

  75. before they go out and start transforming other people.

  76. But as they continue to grow

  77. and miracles are taking place in Jerusalem,

  78. the officials don't like it

  79. and they start to think of ways

  80. that they can slow down the phenomenal growth of this new community.

  81. But it does keep growing.

  82. They get to 5,000.

  83. It says, Acts tells us then,

  84. that even priests begin to believe

  85. and they start being added to the church

  86. and officials begin to believe

  87. and miracles are taking place.

  88. So the apostles are no longer able

  89. to keep doing what they believe they're called to do,

  90. which is to pray and to bring the word of God.

  91. So they choose seven other men

  92. to take over the administration

  93. of this huge new community that's growing.

  94. And Philip, who we hear about in the reading today,

  95. is one of those men.

  96. Another one of those men is a man called Stephen,

  97. who is also performing miracles

  98. and people are coming to faith

  99. through encounters with him.

  100. So at this point,

  101. the officials in Jerusalem

  102. really want to put a stop

  103. to the growth of this community

  104. and so they drag Stephen to court.

  105. They bring some trumped up charge against him

  106. and they stone him to death.

  107. At that point where Stephen is stoned to death,

  108. the church is persecuted and scattered

  109. and they have to flee for their lives.

  110. So they flee.

  111. Where do you think they flee to?

  112. From Jerusalem,

  113. where do you think they go?

  114. I know somebody in the congregation

  115. knows the answer.

  116. So Jesus has said,

  117. you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem

  118. and in all Judea and Samaria

  119. and to the ends of the earth.

  120. So when they're scattered from Jerusalem,

  121. where do you think they go?

  122. They go firstly to Judea and Samaria.

  123. They get scattered

  124. and that's their nearest neighbours.

  125. So it would be like us

  126. having to flee our homes here.

  127. We'd go to the other parts of the south west

  128. or we'd go to where we'd got family.

  129. We'd go to local cities round about.

  130. You might be asking yourself,

  131. what was that all about?

  132. Why would God allow the church

  133. to be broken up and persecuted like that

  134. when it's growing at such an amazing rate?

  135. Well the answer lies in what Jesus has told them

  136. they're going to do.

  137. They're amazing witnesses in Jerusalem

  138. and things are happening

  139. beyond their wildest dreams.

  140. But I wonder if maybe

  141. they were getting a little bit comfortable

  142. and used to those things happening

  143. and they were enjoying what was happening

  144. because it was all good.

  145. So they're persecuted and scattered

  146. and they flee to Judea and Samaria

  147. and what do you think they do there?

  148. Go into hiding?

  149. No.

  150. They start sharing their message there as well.

  151. So now the gospel isn't only being accepted

  152. by people in Jerusalem,

  153. it's being accepted by people in Judea and Samaria

  154. which is what Jesus said would happen.

  155. So the church community begins to grow

  156. and be established there.

  157. The persecution, the stoning of Stephen,

  158. none of these things can stop the spread

  159. of the message of the gospel

  160. and Philip is the one in the book of Acts

  161. that is named as being responsible

  162. for the church in Samaria being established

  163. because he goes to Samaria,

  164. he preaches the gospel,

  165. the good news of Jesus Christ

  166. and what he's done for us

  167. and the church, the people in Samaria

  168. accept his message

  169. and they also are added

  170. to this new vibrant community of believers.

  171. So there he is in Samaria

  172. sharing the good news.

  173. So they've witnessed in Jerusalem

  174. and the ones that are scattered

  175. have witnessed in all of Judea

  176. and all of Samaria.

  177. At this point,

  178. an angel, we're told in the reading,

  179. comes to Philip and says,

  180. just go south of the city today

  181. and go to the road

  182. that runs between Jerusalem and Gaza.

  183. Now the angel doesn't tell him

  184. why he's got to go

  185. but he hears and he goes.

  186. He doesn't know what's going to happen there

  187. but he goes in the heat of the day

  188. at an inconvenient time

  189. to a hot and dusty desert road

  190. simply because he believes

  191. that God has asked him to do so.

  192. And as he goes

  193. and he gets to the road,

  194. he sees a chariot.

  195. Now this road was the main road

  196. out of Jerusalem.

  197. So this chariot's leaving Jerusalem

  198. and he hears someone in the chariot

  199. reading scriptures out loud to himself.

  200. And so he sidles up,

  201. Philip does,

  202. alongside this chariot

  203. and starts to ask the man inside

  204. who is the Ethiopian,

  205. do you understand what you're reading?

  206. The Ethiopian is reading

  207. from the book of Isaiah

  208. and he's reading it out loud

  209. as Jews especially

  210. are prone to do.

  211. And in ancient biblical times

  212. that's how most people read out loud.

  213. So Philip says,

  214. do you understand what you're reading?

  215. And the Ethiopian says,

  216. well, I can't really

  217. unless someone explains it to me.

  218. So Philip takes that opportunity

  219. to explain

  220. that the passage

  221. the Ethiopian is reading

  222. is about Jesus

  223. and Philip begins to share

  224. his message

  225. with this Ethiopian.

  226. Now at this point

  227. I ask myself,

  228. well, Philip's been sharing

  229. that message everywhere

  230. and everyone's been

  231. hearing him,

  232. believing him

  233. and agreeing with him.

  234. So why is this

  235. particular encounter

  236. special

  237. and highlighted

  238. in the Bible?

  239. And as I researched,

  240. I found out

  241. it was because

  242. in those days

  243. the sort of

  244. Jewish,

  245. Roman,

  246. Grecian world

  247. believed

  248. that

  249. Ethiopia,

  250. the top of the Nile

  251. region,

  252. was the end

  253. of the earth.

  254. And Jesus

  255. had said,

  256. you will be

  257. my witnesses

  258. in Jerusalem,

  259. in all Judea

  260. and Samaria

  261. and to the

  262. ends of the earth.

  263. So God doesn't

  264. send Philip

  265. and the disciples

  266. to the ends of the earth,

  267. he brings the ends

  268. of the earth

  269. to them.

  270. And there's

  271. the Ethiopian

  272. and he is

  273. a wealthy

  274. Ethiopian,

  275. he works for the

  276. Queen of Ethiopia,

  277. he's her treasurer

  278. and he's going back

  279. after what he was

  280. doing in Jerusalem,

  281. taking part

  282. in the festivals,

  283. he's heading back

  284. to Ethiopia.

  285. So Philip

  286. gets this opportunity

  287. to share

  288. the good news

  289. with this Ethiopian

  290. and that encounter

  291. transforms

  292. the Ethiopian's

  293. life,

  294. so much so

  295. that he stops

  296. the carriage

  297. and he says,

  298. there's some water

  299. I need to get

  300. baptised

  301. and give my life

  302. to Jesus.

  303. Lottie

  304. has been baptised

  305. this morning,

  306. she has had

  307. a transforming

  308. encounter

  309. with the Holy

  310. Spirit

  311. and he will

  312. continue to

  313. shape

  314. and mould

  315. her life

  316. and as family

  317. and friends

  318. and particularly

  319. as parents

  320. and godparents,

  321. you have a very

  322. specific role

  323. to play in that,

  324. you will be like

  325. Lottie's

  326. Philip,

  327. it is your

  328. responsibility

  329. to share

  330. the good news

  331. with her

  332. so that she

  333. understands it

  334. like the Ethiopian

  335. was then able

  336. to understand

  337. what he was

  338. reading

  339. because Philip

  340. shared it

  341. with him.

  342. So this

  343. transforming

  344. encounter

  345. takes place

  346. and the

  347. Ethiopian

  348. carries on

  349. his way

  350. back to

  351. Ethiopia

  352. and takes

  353. the good news

  354. that he's

  355. received with

  356. him

  357. and spreads

  358. the gospel

  359. message

  360. to the

  361. ends of

  362. the earth

  363. and we

  364. are recipients

  365. of that

  366. message.

  367. So this

  368. morning I

  369. want to

  370. just

  371. kind of

  372. leave a

  373. couple of

  374. questions

  375. with you

  376. regarding

  377. what

  378. transforming

  379. encounters

  380. are either

  381. one taking

  382. place in

  383. our life.

  384. I think

  385. it's really

  386. easy to

  387. assume

  388. that

  389. whenever

  390. we read

  391. passages

  392. in the

  393. Bible

  394. we're

  395. always

  396. the

  397. Philip

  398. we're

  399. always

  400. going to

  401. be the

  402. one

  403. that

  404. sent

  405. and that

  406. is true

  407. God

  408. does want

  409. us to

  410. take

  411. that

  412. gospel

  413. message

  414. but I

  415. would just

  416. wonder

  417. how

  418. often

  419. we're

  420. aware

  421. that we

  422. might be

  423. the

  424. Ethiopian

  425. in

  426. the

  427. passage

  428. and

  429. God

  430. might be

  431. sending

  432. someone

  433. to us

  434. to

  435. transform

  436. our

  437. lives

  438. so be

  439. aware

  440. of

  441. encounters

  442. through

  443. which

  444. we

  445. can

  446. be

  447. transformed

  448. and then

  449. secondly

  450. be aware

  451. of

  452. encounters

  453. that

  454. God

  455. does

  456. want

  457. to

  458. use

  459. us

  460. to

  461. transform

  462. other

  463. people

  464. and that

  465. can

  466. happen

  467. in two

  468. ways

  469. in

  470. Samaria

  471. Philip

  472. publicly

  473. proclaimed

  474. and preached

  475. the gospel

  476. and crowds

  477. were coming

  478. to faith

  479. Lottie

  480. has taken

  481. part in

  482. a public

  483. declaration

  484. of faith

  485. in Christ

  486. this morning

  487. but secondly

  488. Philip had

  489. an opportunity

  490. to share

  491. a personal

  492. testimony

  493. with

  494. the Ethiopian

  495. no one

  496. watching

  497. it didn't

  498. go on

  499. social media

  500. anywhere

  501. he didn't

  502. get public

  503. recognition

  504. for it

  505. in fact

  506. he just

  507. disappeared

  508. at the

  509. end

  510. of that

  511. encounter

  512. but the

  513. passage

  514. tells us

  515. that

  516. the Ethiopian

  517. just went

  518. on his way

  519. rejoicing

  520. anyway

  521. and he

  522. took that

  523. good news

  524. with him

  525. so these

  526. encounters

  527. aren't for

  528. fame and

  529. fortune

  530. therefore

  531. what God

  532. wants to

  533. do

  534. in our

  535. life

  536. and in

  537. the lives

  538. of the

  539. people

  540. that we

  541. do

  542. encounter

  543. so go

  544. in

  545. faith

  546. but go

  547. in courage

  548. as well

  549. that God

  550. in us

  551. will give

  552. us what

  553. we need

  554. in those

  555. individual

  556. situations

  557. and I'll

  558. just leave

  559. you with

  560. one encounter

  561. that stayed

  562. with me

  563. for a

  564. really long

  565. time

  566. I was at

  567. Bible college

  568. before

  569. studying

  570. Greek

  571. and used

  572. to have

  573. to translate

  574. 10 verses

  575. of scripture

  576. every week

  577. and they

  578. used to

  579. take me

  580. hours

  581. I'd spread

  582. them out

  583. all my

  584. books

  585. it'd be

  586. like three

  587. hours

  588. before I

  589. got through

  590. them

  591. one weekend

  592. I was going

  593. to London

  594. to stay

  595. with a friend

  596. and I

  597. thought I'll

  598. just find

  599. a quiet

  600. little corner

  601. on the

  602. train

  603. get my

  604. homework

  605. done

  606. and out

  607. the way

  608. then I

  609. won't have

  610. to worry

  611. about it

  612. and the

  613. train was

  614. packed

  615. so I

  616. sat in

  617. a

  618. two

  619. seat

  620. I

  621. spread

  622. my

  623. books

  624. out

  625. and said

  626. to God

  627. I'm not

  628. talking to

  629. anyone

  630. I'm doing

  631. my homework

  632. because I'm

  633. a talker

  634. naturally

  635. a really

  636. elderly

  637. blind man

  638. gets on

  639. the train

  640. and someone

  641. who's just

  642. helping him

  643. on says

  644. to me

  645. can you

  646. move your

  647. books please

  648. at which

  649. point I'm

  650. really irritated

  651. and I

  652. shove all my

  653. books up the

  654. corner

  655. and this

  656. man sits

  657. down next

  658. to me

  659. and I

  660. say again

  661. to God

  662. I'm not

  663. talking to

  664. him

  665. I'm doing

  666. my homework

  667. so I get

  668. my Greek

  669. sentences out

  670. read the

  671. first one

  672. and I think

  673. oh I know

  674. what that

  675. means

  676. write it

  677. down

  678. move on

  679. to the

  680. second one

  681. I think

  682. oh I know

  683. what that

  684. one means

  685. write it

  686. down

  687. move on

  688. to the

  689. second one

  690. and I

  691. just fly

  692. through all

  693. ten

  694. sentences

  695. and I

  696. think

  697. there's

  698. absolutely

  699. no way

  700. I

  701. of my

  702. own

  703. ability

  704. know

  705. what

  706. these

  707. mean

  708. it's

  709. God

  710. so I

  711. take the

  712. hint

  713. I repent

  714. of my

  715. irritability

  716. and

  717. finish my

  718. sentences

  719. and say

  720. just start

  721. up a

  722. conversation

  723. with this

  724. gentleman

  725. next to

  726. me

  727. we spend

  728. two hours

  729. talking about

  730. war and

  731. politics and

  732. religion

  733. and every

  734. five minutes

  735. he tells

  736. me he's

  737. an atheist

  738. he's chairman

  739. of the

  740. atheist

  741. party

  742. chairman

  743. of the

  744. humanist

  745. party

  746. and that

  747. there isn't

  748. a God

  749. but talks

  750. also about

  751. his Quaker

  752. friend

  753. his Catholic

  754. priest

  755. friend

  756. and he's

  757. got a

  758. whole litany

  759. of believing

  760. friends

  761. and towards

  762. the end of

  763. the journey

  764. he says

  765. I know

  766. there isn't

  767. a God

  768. because if

  769. there was

  770. he would

  771. have allowed

  772. me to

  773. believe in

  774. him

  775. so I

  776. say

  777. do you

  778. know what

  779. Ron

  780. the Bible

  781. says that

  782. if anyone

  783. would come

  784. to God

  785. he must

  786. first believe

  787. that he

  788. exists

  789. and you

  790. by your own

  791. admission keep

  792. saying he

  793. doesn't exist

  794. so maybe you

  795. just need to

  796. ask him

  797. are you

  798. there

  799. and he

  800. begins to

  801. weep

  802. a gentleman

  803. in his

  804. 90s

  805. blind

  806. weeping

  807. and he

  808. says

  809. yes

  810. I can

  811. see that

  812. now

  813. so I

  814. said

  815. can I

  816. pray

  817. with

  818. you

  819. Ron

  820. yes

  821. I'd

  822. like

  823. that

  824. very

  825. much

  826. he

  827. said

  828. and he

  829. lets me

  830. pray

  831. with him

  832. and he

  833. gets off

  834. at Reading

  835. crying

  836. I get

  837. off in

  838. London

  839. crying

  840. and I

  841. will never

  842. see that

  843. gentleman

  844. again

  845. but I

  846. know

  847. that was

  848. a

  849. transforming

  850. encounter

  851. for both

  852. of us

  853. for him

  854. to hear

  855. the good

  856. news

  857. and to

  858. be

  859. encouraged

  860. in his

  861. own

  862. journey

  863. with

  864. God

  865. for me

  866. to know

  867. that when

  868. God

  869. wants me

  870. to do

  871. something

  872. he makes

  873. it possible

  874. if we

  875. just

  876. will

  877. give him

  878. our

  879. yes

  880. so as

  881. we close

  882. today

  883. be

  884. encouraged

  885. when you

  886. have

  887. opportunity

  888. to

  889. encounter

  890. someone

  891. that is

  892. going to

  893. be

  894. transforming

  895. for them

  896. and allow

  897. the Holy

  898. Spirit

  899. to bring

  900. people

  901. into your

  902. life

  903. in a way

  904. that will

  905. transform

  906. you

  907. to
