  1. Once upon a time, there was a small box that sat in the middle of your living room.

  2. It came in black and white.

  3. And it was only on for a few hours every day.

  4. And you'd have, almost like the Bible sat beside it for some, called the Radio Times.

  5. And you would wait for your favourite programme to come on,

  6. albeit Andy Pandy or Muffin the Mule.

  7. But in between, you would get an interesting interlude.

  8. And it would look something like this.

  9. There's a thing called the Potter's Wheel.

  10. And I don't know whether you remember them.

  11. There were several ones where you would get this interlude of black and white,

  12. of somebody moulding the clay.

  13. And it was lovely because there was an anticipation,

  14. because you knew that something was coming while this thing was being moulded away.

  15. My goodness, we're all showing our age this morning.

  16. For anybody here, young people, look it up on YouTube.

  17. I was thinking there has to be a biblical imperative.

  18. Let's just have a think.

  19. Because while we're waiting for this thing,

  20. we're waiting for something that is really exciting in this thing of Advent.

  21. And while we're waiting, what are the things that are most important to you?

  22. And I'm challenged because I'm going to ask you a question.

  23. If you had to leave your house quickly,

  24. what are the three things that you would grab before you go?

  25. Now, just a bit of advice here.

  26. If you are a married couple here,

  27. the first one is to say,

  28. you my sweet,

  29. not the dog,

  30. and not your insurance policy.

  31. Okay.

  32. So I'm just going to ask you,

  33. three things that you would take

  34. if you had to grab them

  35. to go quickly.

  36. I will give you a minute

  37. just to talk or think amongst yourselves

  38. as to what those three things might be.

  39. The thing is,

  40. the imperative is,

  41. is that this reading this morning,

  42. the first of Advent,

  43. makes me think,

  44. what is important to us?

  45. What is the most important thing

  46. as we move into this time,

  47. this time of anticipation?

  48. Also, a bit of an interlude

  49. to actually think and focus

  50. on what is God's imperative.

  51. What is important to us?

  52. But most importantly,

  53. what is important

  54. in our relationship with God?

  55. Because this Advent,

  56. in time of reflection,

  57. expectation, excitement,

  58. my goodness,

  59. if you had been in fact this morning,

  60. the children were wound

  61. like a spring already.

  62. I don't know who was more excited,

  63. them or me.

  64. And as we look forward to experiencing

  65. this thing that the church,

  66. as we as a church,

  67. are getting ready for,

  68. as we look forward to celebrating

  69. this life-changing moment

  70. of Emmanuel,

  71. God with us,

  72. it made me think,

  73. so what is important to God?

  74. because we can all think

  75. of what is important to us,

  76. but what is important to God

  77. as we move towards this Advent season?

  78. What is so important

  79. that he was prepared to send

  80. and sacrifice his son

  81. to save us?

  82. My goodness,

  83. to think that we

  84. are the first thing

  85. that he would think about saving.

  86. Never mind everything else,

  87. never mind what else,

  88. we were the ones

  89. that he was thinking about.

  90. And what was that

  91. made him so important,

  92. so much that he would become flesh,

  93. that he would become a child,

  94. and you don't get any more vulnerable

  95. than a child,

  96. to come into this world

  97. in order to engage

  98. with our humanity,

  99. in order to save

  100. that which was precious,

  101. which is us,

  102. which is you and me,

  103. which is the ones

  104. he actually came to save.

  105. That focuses me

  106. in this interlude

  107. because we can't ignore it.

  108. And you may say

  109. in the light of the news,

  110. are we worth saving?

  111. You know,

  112. I looked at that last night

  113. and I looked,

  114. my goodness.

  115. But yet he still doesn't give up.

  116. That he chooses you and me

  117. in a rebellious world

  118. to come.

  119. And here is Isaiah

  120. pouring out

  121. what is still as fresh today

  122. as it was then

  123. for a people

  124. who had turned away from God.

  125. And God says,

  126. actually I'm going to come

  127. and do something about that for you.

  128. And here it is,

  129. there are places

  130. found in this reading

  131. and confession,

  132. you know,

  133. that we are like filthy rags.

  134. My goodness,

  135. it doesn't get any clearer

  136. than that

  137. in a context

  138. of what Isaiah was speaking to.

  139. And yet,

  140. he still comes

  141. to save us.

  142. Israel's desire for God

  143. to tear open the heavens

  144. and come down,

  145. to tear open

  146. and suddenly have this huge awakening.

  147. And here it is in Jesus.

  148. Here is the answer to prayer.

  149. Here is the answer

  150. to Isaiah's desire.

  151. Here is the answer

  152. to God's desire,

  153. the coming of Jesus.

  154. The coming of Jesus

  155. in a manger.

  156. The coming of Jesus

  157. to judge the world.

  158. The coming of Jesus

  159. so that we can have

  160. kingdom values.

  161. The coming of Jesus

  162. so that we can have

  163. hope

  164. and a life.

  165. And God says,

  166. it's okay,

  167. let's do it.

  168. It's okay,

  169. Isaiah,

  170. let's do it then.

  171. And that's when it happens.

  172. And if your prayer

  173. like mine is,

  174. let's make a difference

  175. to the community,

  176. then be encouraged

  177. in this Advent

  178. because God says

  179. in this reading

  180. and to Isaiah

  181. and to us,

  182. okay then,

  183. let's do it.

  184. Let's do this thing

  185. together

  186. because God's work

  187. of salvation

  188. hasn't stopped

  189. and we are still part

  190. of the salvation story.

  191. So what's our part?

  192. What is most important

  193. to us

  194. when God says,

  195. let's do it?

  196. Perhaps

  197. your heart

  198. this Advent

  199. is to inspire

  200. and ignite

  201. the community

  202. in which you work

  203. and live.

  204. Every day

  205. might seem mundane

  206. but for something

  207. to come,

  208. light the candle

  209. to ignite something

  210. that's afresh

  211. in you

  212. and in us

  213. and in our community.

  214. What does that take

  215. for us to do?

  216. And I'm so inspired

  217. by people

  218. who have done

  219. that in life

  220. like John Wesley.

  221. John Wesley

  222. who decided

  223. that to spark

  224. a nation

  225. he would actually

  226. get out of the church

  227. and would go

  228. and preach

  229. outside of mines

  230. and in works

  231. of people's

  232. workplaces.

  233. He saw

  234. transformation

  235. of life

  236. because he was

  237. called out

  238. of what he was doing

  239. and people

  240. got the spark

  241. and they saw

  242. revival.

  243. And it says

  244. come down

  245. ignite the world

  246. in revival

  247. rend the heavens

  248. break out

  249. and make a difference

  250. and people did.

  251. He preached

  252. so much

  253. that the workers

  254. who had previously

  255. gone with their wages

  256. and just drunk them

  257. at the end of the day

  258. suddenly went home

  259. and saw a new way

  260. of doing life

  261. and because of that

  262. family life

  263. was transformed

  264. family life

  265. was changed.

  266. The culture

  267. of this country

  268. shifted

  269. and I don't know

  270. about you

  271. that's what I think

  272. I want to see a shift

  273. I think we all

  274. want to see a shift

  275. a shift

  276. in what is new

  277. of what God

  278. can do

  279. in us

  280. and through us

  281. and I know

  282. this is a strange

  283. concept

  284. but the important

  285. things to me

  286. aren't the material

  287. things

  288. it was people

  289. like Wesley

  290. and others

  291. that were inspired

  292. by this shift

  293. that we can see

  294. that we can be part of

  295. and you might be saying

  296. that how can we do that

  297. for part of my 60th

  298. birthday present

  299. Mandy bought me

  300. a ticket

  301. to go and see

  302. Love Actually live

  303. I don't know

  304. whether you've seen it

  305. it's amazing

  306. if you get the chance

  307. to go

  308. they have a full orchestra

  309. at the Colston Hall

  310. and you watch the film

  311. but the orchestra

  312. play the music

  313. you don't know

  314. what to watch

  315. the film

  316. or the orchestra

  317. but the whole essence

  318. of looking at that film

  319. afresh

  320. was

  321. love

  322. actually

  323. is still alive

  324. and real

  325. and I think

  326. sometimes

  327. the world

  328. needs to know

  329. this issue

  330. about that

  331. love

  332. is

  333. all around

  334. it's just

  335. that we need

  336. to connect

  337. with it

  338. this weekend

  339. there will be

  340. an amazing opportunity

  341. to show love

  342. you've had a dedicated

  343. team

  344. that have already

  345. been doing

  346. a lot of planning

  347. and this place

  348. will be full

  349. of Christmas trees

  350. and people

  351. will come

  352. people will talk

  353. people will celebrate

  354. if you were here

  355. last Sunday

  356. you would have

  357. witnessed the baptism

  358. that was here

  359. why?

  360. because somebody

  361. was invited

  362. and came

  363. to a Christmas tree

  364. festival

  365. they came

  366. they sat

  367. at the back

  368. and because of that

  369. for them

  370. there was a

  371. reigniting

  372. and awakening

  373. in their lives

  374. and Steve Hargreaves

  375. and his children

  376. were baptised

  377. together

  378. what a glorious

  379. celebration

  380. that was

  381. the thing is

  382. there is this

  383. reignition

  384. of hope

  385. within our community

  386. that starts

  387. with us

  388. and we think

  389. it's difficult

  390. but it's not

  391. it's about

  392. love actually

  393. and all we need

  394. to do

  395. is be alongside

  396. people

  397. and show them

  398. God's love

  399. to speak with them

  400. to share with them

  401. to smile at them

  402. to encourage them

  403. to tell them

  404. the good news

  405. that they actually

  406. really want to hear

  407. because desperately

  408. they know

  409. there's something

  410. missing

  411. and my goodness

  412. does this country

  413. know that there's

  414. something missing

  415. if I hear Brexit

  416. again on the radio

  417. I think

  418. no

  419. the tower's

  420. not tall enough

  421. but it's

  422. you know

  423. it's just

  424. my goodness

  425. we need

  426. some hope

  427. and some

  428. encouragement

  429. and in that

  430. 1950s intermission

  431. in the interlude

  432. perhaps something

  433. we need again

  434. in our lives

  435. is to realise

  436. that there's

  437. this anticipation

  438. and expectation

  439. of something

  440. coming

  441. at the end

  442. of the day

  443. the message

  444. of Advent

  445. is

  446. what was

  447. God's

  448. priority

  449. what was

  450. God's

  451. priority

  452. and what

  453. will our

  454. be priority

  455. in this interlude

  456. I pray

  457. on this

  458. first day

  459. of Advent

  460. that we would

  461. go away

  462. from here

  463. thinking

  464. and praying

  465. what our

  466. priority is

  467. and our

  468. priority

  469. is to carry

  470. on salvation's

  471. work

  472. to see

  473. people

  474. come to

  475. know him

  476. I will tell

  477. you again

  478. I can't

  479. carry

  480. people

  481. into the

  482. kingdom of

  483. God

  484. it's not

  485. our job

  486. but what

  487. we can do

  488. is we can

  489. introduce

  490. people

  491. to Jesus

  492. and that's

  493. what we're

  494. called to do
