  1. As we've been looking through the last few weeks, we've been looking at our vision for Christchurch

  2. and what we were given many years ago. And this week we're focusing on God's calling to us in our

  3. community for those people that we're called to reach and achieving what we are called to be

  4. and what we're called to do. I don't know what you'll like at sharing good news or how you share

  5. good news. For our offer courses, we use some clips at the beginning and here's what some people have said,

  6. how they convey good news.

  7. Good news?

  8. I don't know. Recently. Yesterday maybe.

  9. Today when I got told I'd get 20 quid for an hour.

  10. My best friend's having a baby girl.

  11. No, I don't have any. You go first. No, you've got good news.

  12. Baby slept through the night.

  13. I think it was one of my GCSE was on.

  14. I found out I was getting a better job, I guess.

  15. It was my brother getting into university.

  16. I'm quite loud, so I'll just shout it to everyone.

  17. Twitter, Facebook, stuff like that really.

  18. With my friends, it's usually food.

  19. Oh my God, guess what?

  20. You know?

  21. Like I just tweet most of my stuff.

  22. Jumping off and down.

  23. I tell them face to face. I don't do like Facebook or all that sort of stuff, so.

  24. Is it good news if you can't tell anyone?

  25. I suppose all good news is worth sharing.

  26. To make everybody else happy.

  27. So people can celebrate with you, right?

  28. Yeah.

  29. All good news is worth sharing.

  30. It was a day you don't forget.

  31. It was the 9th of December.

  32. It was 1986.

  33. It was 7.42 in the morning.

  34. The Countdown by Europe was number one in the charts.

  35. Miami Vice, if you remember it, was headlining on the television.

  36. I actually did own one of those white jackets with the padded shoulders.

  37. We'd just finished decorating our house in Taunton.

  38. I had just sold my glorious Mark II Ford Capri to buy a Ford Fiesta Mark I.

  39. The good news was that at 7.42 on that morning, I became a dad.

  40. And in those days before mobile phones, before social texting, before any media,

  41. like every other dad in that maternity wing,

  42. I was armed with a bag full of 10 pence pieces.

  43. Because I knew with that bag of 10 pence pieces,

  44. I was going to share the most important and exciting news

  45. with all the people that Mandy had put on this list.

  46. All in the right order to make sure that we knew.

  47. The good news was that life had changed forever.

  48. That Mark Wesley Jennings had come into the world.

  49. And I couldn't wait to share that news.

  50. It was natural.

  51. It was exciting.

  52. And so it should be.

  53. Because when we've got good news to share,

  54. that's the way it should be.

  55. And I didn't care who I told.

  56. After on my way home, I told the bloke from the paper shop in Galmington.

  57. I told the postie on the way past.

  58. I told my neighbours as I took the dog out,

  59. I told everybody the great news.

  60. I am a dad.

  61. I didn't care who knew.

  62. When we read this passage this morning,

  63. I've got to ask,

  64. how do you hear this news?

  65. How do you hear it?

  66. How do we hear it?

  67. Honestly,

  68. because for years I'll tell you

  69. that I heard this as something a little bit mediocre.

  70. As though it wasn't the most exciting thing to do.

  71. Because for me,

  72. I knew all about Jesus.

  73. I knew my Bible.

  74. I was in the choir.

  75. I can even remember the hymn numbers on the page.

  76. Three times a day,

  77. you don't forget that sort of thing.

  78. But being sent out like sheep amongst wolves

  79. isn't perhaps the most cheery thought

  80. that we've got to go and share our good news.

  81. I went to Secondary Modern,

  82. and I'll tell you,

  83. I'd seen a few lambs savaged.

  84. But the disciples are learning.

  85. And they are still learning.

  86. They are being discipled as to what to do.

  87. So I am asking myself,

  88. this scripture,

  89. is it a game changer for us?

  90. You see,

  91. the disciples are having a theory lesson

  92. before the hands-on stuff actually happens.

  93. Jesus throws in a line,

  94. and it's a great line for them,

  95. and it's a great line for us,

  96. and it comes right at the end of that scripture.

  97. For it will not be you speaking,

  98. but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

  99. God speaking through us.

  100. And that's got to be good news.

  101. Because you see,

  102. for many,

  103. they didn't get it.

  104. They still didn't get it

  105. until the Pentecost moment.

  106. They were having a theory lesson here

  107. of what was to come,

  108. because they were going to experience

  109. the good news

  110. of Jesus died,

  111. rising again,

  112. and then that powerful Pentecost moment

  113. when everything that Jesus had been saying to them,

  114. which we hear in the scripture today,

  115. they actually went out and did.

  116. This was a preparation moment

  117. for sharing the good news.

  118. And it was good news,

  119. and Jesus knows

  120. that they weren't going to be fully effective

  121. until they'd actually experience

  122. this Pentecost moment

  123. when the world would be changed and transformed.

  124. Good news for the world,

  125. good news for a generation.

  126. And Russ said last week in the preaching

  127. as we were looking through this,

  128. you know,

  129. it's not about us.

  130. It's always about him.

  131. It's about him,

  132. and it's for him

  133. that we share the good news.

  134. You see,

  135. in the power of the Holy Spirit,

  136. life is changed.

  137. We have the words.

  138. We have a fresh confidence.

  139. And the word that's been coming through this morning

  140. in our music

  141. and in our scriptures

  142. is authority.

  143. And he handed them authority

  144. to go and share

  145. the good news.

  146. And it has to be good news

  147. because it's what the world is looking for.

  148. It's bubbling out of them.

  149. Can I suggest,

  150. we have been given these little booklets

  151. and we're going to take them.

  152. It's the 11 days of prayer

  153. that starts on the 10th.

  154. And we're going to pray

  155. with people across this world

  156. that those five names

  157. that we put on the inside,

  158. that they will come to hear that good news.

  159. But who will they hear it from?

  160. And I pray that maybe,

  161. as a church,

  162. as we look at our vision,

  163. that we will bubble out of us

  164. so much

  165. that people are drawn to us.

  166. I took the dog out on Friday morning.

  167. Friday morning,

  168. it's nice to go out in a dry weather,

  169. isn't it,

  170. lately,

  171. with the dog.

  172. Makes a bit of a change.

  173. And I got to the top of the hill

  174. and I was suddenly confronted by balloons.

  175. And I thought,

  176. my goodness,

  177. that's really cheery.

  178. There's balloons at the top

  179. by the bowling club.

  180. Not the sort of normal thing

  181. that you see outside of the bowling club.

  182. Balloons on a Friday morning.

  183. And as I got closer

  184. and I saw that there was

  185. a small gathering

  186. around these balloons,

  187. people had stopped

  188. to read the notice.

  189. And it was for

  190. a women's group

  191. that was meeting here

  192. on a Friday morning.

  193. And it was inviting women

  194. to come and have cakes

  195. and enjoy themselves.

  196. I thought,

  197. that's good news.

  198. I was really encouraged by that.

  199. Albeit that I'm not a woman

  200. and I couldn't attend.

  201. But I was still pleased

  202. for you all

  203. of those who could attend.

  204. But I thought,

  205. what a great way

  206. of sharing the good news.

  207. It was bright.

  208. It was alive.

  209. It said who we are.

  210. And we are being discipled.

  211. And I want to encourage you

  212. this morning.

  213. Whatever stage we are at,

  214. whatever stage we may be,

  215. that we are being prepared

  216. to share that good news.

  217. And we have got good news

  218. to share.

  219. And I want to encourage you

  220. this morning

  221. to know the good news

  222. and live the good news.

  223. Maybe we're all

  224. at different stages

  225. of where we are

  226. in our discipleship.

  227. But I want to encourage you

  228. and whoever's listening

  229. on this podcast,

  230. wherever you are,

  231. God has given you

  232. authority

  233. to share the good news.

  234. And he will empower you afresh

  235. in the power

  236. of the Holy Spirit.

  237. They had the theory

  238. and then came

  239. the power of Pentecost.

  240. And they didn't care who knew.

  241. And they were given

  242. opportunities

  243. which they had never,

  244. ever thought they would have

  245. to share the good news

  246. in different languages,

  247. in different ways.

  248. And maybe like me,

  249. for many years,

  250. you had this little

  251. closed idea

  252. that you should just go

  253. and maybe

  254. embarrassingly

  255. hand somebody a tract

  256. with Scripture on it

  257. and then run away.

  258. Maybe God is showing us

  259. a new way

  260. in which he will give us words.

  261. He will give us ways.

  262. He will give us opportunities.

  263. He will put us in places

  264. that we never,

  265. ever thought

  266. that we would be.

  267. And then,

  268. in the power of the Spirit

  269. as we pray,

  270. he will give us words

  271. that will draw people

  272. not to us,

  273. but to him.

  274. I'm going to end

  275. with a story

  276. because it is

  277. something

  278. that is really,

  279. I feel,

  280. sense for many of us

  281. that have thought,

  282. what difference

  283. do I make?

  284. Because we become vulnerable.

  285. That's what he was saying

  286. to his disciples.

  287. Go out,

  288. be vulnerable,

  289. but in the power

  290. of the Holy Spirit,

  291. I will give them

  292. message which is authentic,

  293. which is real,

  294. which is powerful,

  295. which is lasting,

  296. which is empowering,

  297. life-giving,

  298. and life-sharing.

  299. There was a pastor

  300. who was

  301. in World War I

  302. and much of his job

  303. was to minister

  304. to those

  305. who were dying,

  306. to minister

  307. to those

  308. who were in the trenches.

  309. And he remembers

  310. very clearly,

  311. and as he wrote,

  312. that he held

  313. an 18-year-old

  314. in his arms

  315. as he was dying.

  316. And this young lad

  317. had said to him,

  318. will you do one thing

  319. for me, Pastor?

  320. Will you promise me

  321. one thing?

  322. And he said,

  323. yeah, whatever it is,

  324. just tell me.

  325. He said,

  326. I want you

  327. to go to this person

  328. at the end of the war,

  329. and I want you

  330. to go and tell them

  331. that by sharing

  332. the good news

  333. with me

  334. all those years ago

  335. has made a difference

  336. into the way

  337. in which I can die today

  338. because I know

  339. Jesus is my saviour.

  340. And I have no fear.

  341. Would you go

  342. and tell him that?

  343. And he promised him

  344. and he said he would.

  345. And after the war was over,

  346. the pastor made his way

  347. to a small Welsh village

  348. in the valleys

  349. and found this man

  350. and his wife

  351. and found them out

  352. and told them the story.

  353. The man broke down

  354. and cried

  355. and he said,

  356. I feel so ashamed

  357. because I've been

  358. a Sunday school teacher

  359. all my life

  360. and yet three years ago

  361. I gave up

  362. because I didn't think

  363. I was making a difference.

  364. Can I encourage you

  365. this morning,

  366. can I encourage all of us

  367. that we are anointed

  368. and we are appointed

  369. to go and share

  370. the good news

  371. in every season,

  372. wherever that is.

  373. and we ask

  374. to do that

  375. and maybe this morning

  376. as we take communion

  377. you would ask

  378. to do that afresh

  379. in the power

  380. of the Holy Spirit.

  381. to do that.

  382. To do that

  383. I would observe

  384. that you otherwise

  385. tend to be

  386. a normal service

  387. or to the other

  388. part without

  389. taking aary

  390. acry

  391. and keeping

  392. a bit

  393. zie

  394. them

  395. because

  396. you

  397. have

  398. you

  399. have

  400. a

  401. acord

  402. of the

  403. Afterwards

  404. to do it

  405. you

  406. and
