  1. Well, I wanted to do something this morning

  2. I've been thinking about doing for ages.

  3. I've been thinking about getting my tongue pierced.

  4. And I thought, I'm never going to have the confidence

  5. to do that on my own.

  6. So if I did it when I've got a few friends around me,

  7. that's probably better.

  8. So poke your tongue out at me.

  9. Go like this.

  10. You might want to look away if you're squeamish.

  11. Keep your tongue poked up.

  12. Relax, it's not real.

  13. What is genuinely shocking is the real tongue.

  14. Seriously.

  15. It's a tiny part of the body,

  16. but the impact it can have is shocking.

  17. And that's why James wrote what he said.

  18. He said, if you imagine like a ship,

  19. think of the size of a ship

  20. and how that can be turned,

  21. the direction of that ship can be determined

  22. by just a tiny rudder.

  23. Or think of an enormous fire in a forest

  24. that starts off with just the tiniest spark.

  25. So it is that this seemingly small, insignificant,

  26. most of the time we don't even see it,

  27. part of the body in our mouths

  28. can cause so much destruction,

  29. but also it can change so many people's lives

  30. for the better.

  31. So we've got it.

  32. And with it goes responsibility.

  33. Now we're thinking about worship

  34. in a series at the moment,

  35. and we're thinking particularly then this morning

  36. about, well, what might the connection be

  37. between how we worship God,

  38. and remember, we're not just talking about Sundays here,

  39. we're talking about whole life worship,

  40. the way in which we use our speech,

  41. the way we talk in worship,

  42. in prayer.

  43. It's the link between that

  44. and all the talking that we do the rest of the time.

  45. Several years ago,

  46. the writer Selwyn Hughes said this.

  47. I was going to try and paraphrase it,

  48. but I think he puts it so well,

  49. I'm just going to read it to you.

  50. He said this,

  51. we become what we say.

  52. Why is the tongue so important?

  53. Because the expression of a thing

  54. deepens the impression.

  55. A word uttered

  56. becomes a word made flesh in us.

  57. We become the incarnation

  58. of what we express.

  59. Jesus said,

  60. for by your words you will be acquitted,

  61. and by your words you will be condemned.

  62. After I saw that a person

  63. becomes what he or she says,

  64. I have looked at this verse

  65. in a different light.

  66. If you tell a lie,

  67. you become a lie.

  68. The deepest punishment of a lie

  69. is to be the one who tells that lie.

  70. That person has to live with someone

  71. that they cannot trust.

  72. Now look at what I'm saying

  73. from the opposite perspective.

  74. When we express good things,

  75. positive things,

  76. loving things,

  77. biblical things,

  78. these things go deeper into us.

  79. clear expression

  80. deepens impression.

  81. There's a story of a brilliant young physicist

  82. who tells how he often

  83. would discuss complex issues

  84. relating to physics

  85. with his wife,

  86. who was not a physicist

  87. and who doesn't know the first thing

  88. about the subject.

  89. He said,

  90. I describe in detail

  91. to her what I am doing

  92. and she doesn't understand

  93. a word.

  94. But sometimes

  95. when I'm through,

  96. I do.

  97. If it is true

  98. that we become

  99. the incarnation

  100. of what we express,

  101. then how careful

  102. we ought to be

  103. to ensure

  104. that what we say

  105. is guarded

  106. and governed

  107. by truth,

  108. integrity

  109. and kindness.

  110. Always remember,

  111. every word you utter

  112. becomes flesh

  113. in you.

  114. In all frankness,

  115. how do you feel

  116. inwardly

  117. after you've said

  118. something negative

  119. about somebody?

  120. Or maybe after

  121. you've had an argument

  122. with them?

  123. If you get a bad

  124. feeling inside,

  125. I think that only

  126. goes to

  127. demonstrate

  128. something of what

  129. Selwyn Hughes

  130. was saying there.

  131. I'm going to think

  132. firstly of the impact

  133. of negative speech

  134. and then

  135. think of the impact

  136. of positive speech.

  137. And there's two things

  138. that come to mind.

  139. The positive

  140. is kind of the

  141. mirror image,

  142. if you like,

  143. of the negative

  144. or the other way around,

  145. whichever you want

  146. to look at it.

  147. But there's two

  148. expressions of

  149. negative speech

  150. that I want to

  151. suggest.

  152. But they can be

  153. damaging not only

  154. to others

  155. but also to

  156. ourselves.

  157. And these two

  158. expressions of

  159. negative speech

  160. are firstly

  161. gossip

  162. and second

  163. criticism.

  164. Let's just think

  165. about those.

  166. Think firstly

  167. about gossip.

  168. Let's be really,

  169. really honest about

  170. this.

  171. If we overhear

  172. a conversation

  173. in which gossip

  174. is taking place,

  175. who among us

  176. doesn't really

  177. honestly feel

  178. attracted and

  179. drawn in to

  180. that conversation

  181. at some level?

  182. There's something

  183. intriguing about it.

  184. Somebody is

  185. talking about

  186. someone else.

  187. We know that's

  188. someone else and

  189. we want to know

  190. what's being said

  191. about them.

  192. There's just

  193. something inside us

  194. that finds that

  195. really, really hard

  196. not to be drawn

  197. into the conversation.

  198. And if it happens

  199. to be negative

  200. things about

  201. that person

  202. and particularly

  203. if it's somebody

  204. that has,

  205. we've been on

  206. the receiving end

  207. of their negativity

  208. before,

  209. we kind of feel

  210. this sense of

  211. wanting to know

  212. a little bit more,

  213. a sense of

  214. reassurance

  215. that someone else

  216. has noticed

  217. that negative

  218. thing about them

  219. as well.

  220. And perhaps

  221. there's something

  222. deep down in us

  223. that when we

  224. hear gossip,

  225. one of the things

  226. we find strangely

  227. and weirdly

  228. comforting about

  229. it is that

  230. it detracts us

  231. for a moment

  232. from the realities

  233. of our own

  234. broken characters.

  235. We like to

  236. think about

  237. and focus in

  238. on someone

  239. else's weaknesses

  240. because for

  241. a few moments

  242. at least,

  243. our own weaknesses

  244. of character

  245. are off radar.

  246. But the consequences

  247. of talking about

  248. others in that

  249. kind of way

  250. can be so

  251. destructive,

  252. not only for them,

  253. not only for others,

  254. but for ourselves.

  255. There's a Jewish

  256. story that is told

  257. about a man

  258. who was

  259. always bad-mouthing

  260. his rabbi

  261. and he had

  262. had a particular

  263. episode where

  264. he'd been

  265. spreading really

  266. quite malicious

  267. gossip about

  268. this man

  269. behind his

  270. back and

  271. eventually came

  272. to his senses.

  273. He had this

  274. bad feeling

  275. welling up

  276. inside and

  277. he just felt

  278. he had to do

  279. something.

  280. In the end

  281. he decided to

  282. go and see

  283. the rabbi

  284. and he told

  285. him what he'd

  286. done and he

  287. confessed and

  288. he said,

  289. I've been

  290. bad-mouthing you,

  291. I've been

  292. saying really

  293. bad things

  294. about you and

  295. I know they're

  296. not actually

  297. completely true

  298. and I'm

  299. sorry.

  300. The rabbi

  301. said,

  302. I forgive you.

  303. He said,

  304. yeah,

  305. but I want to

  306. learn from

  307. this.

  308. I don't

  309. want to be

  310. sent away,

  311. teach me

  312. something,

  313. what can I

  314. learn from

  315. this?

  316. The rabbi

  317. said,

  318. okay,

  319. I want you

  320. to do

  321. this and

  322. it's going

  323. to sound

  324. weird.

  325. I want you

  326. to go and

  327. find a really

  328. sharp knife

  329. and I want

  330. you to go

  331. and get

  332. two of the

  333. plumpest

  334. feather-filled

  335. pillows that

  336. you can find.

  337. And then I

  338. want you to

  339. take the two

  340. feather pillows

  341. and the knife

  342. into the town

  343. square.

  344. And then

  345. when you

  346. get there,

  347. I want you

  348. to slit

  349. open those

  350. pillows and

  351. wave them

  352. around as

  353. hard as

  354. you can.

  355. The man

  356. thinks this

  357. is a little

  358. bit weird,

  359. but he

  360. decides to

  361. do what

  362. the rabbi

  363. has told

  364. him.

  365. So he

  366. goes off,

  367. he gets

  368. these two

  369. really plump

  370. feather-filled

  371. pillows and

  372. a knife.

  373. He goes into

  374. the town

  375. square,

  376. there's loads

  377. of people

  378. around,

  379. people start

  380. to look

  381. thinking,

  382. what is

  383. this bloke

  384. doing?

  385. As he

  386. slices open

  387. these pillows

  388. and he flaps

  389. them as hard

  390. as he can,

  391. there's feathers

  392. everywhere.

  393. He goes back

  394. to the rabbi,

  395. he tells him

  396. that he's done

  397. what he asked,

  398. he said,

  399. now what am I

  400. to learn from

  401. that?

  402. The rabbi

  403. looks at him,

  404. he says,

  405. I want you to

  406. go back to

  407. the square

  408. now and I

  409. want you to

  410. retrieve every

  411. last feather

  412. and put them

  413. back in the

  414. pillows.

  415. See,

  416. that's what

  417. happens with

  418. words when

  419. we start

  420. to talk

  421. loosely about

  422. others.

  423. It gets

  424. out there,

  425. whether we

  426. mean it or

  427. not,

  428. it does,

  429. it's how

  430. it works.

  431. I'm

  432. rather like

  433. trying to

  434. go around

  435. and pick up

  436. feathers afterwards,

  437. be sure it

  438. will make

  439. your own

  440. life hard

  441. work as

  442. well.

  443. It's not

  444. good.

  445. The other

  446. form of

  447. expression of

  448. negative talking

  449. that comes to

  450. mind is

  451. criticism.

  452. I'm a great

  453. believer in

  454. that old

  455. proverb that

  456. before you

  457. criticise

  458. somebody else,

  459. you should

  460. walk a mile

  461. in their

  462. shoes.

  463. Now,

  464. there's two

  465. reasons why

  466. I believe that

  467. is so powerfully

  468. true.

  469. You see,

  470. if they get

  471. to find out

  472. that you've

  473. been criticising

  474. them,

  475. firstly,

  476. you've walked

  477. a mile away

  478. from them,

  479. secondly,

  480. you've got

  481. their shoes.

  482. Seriously,

  483. criticism,

  484. criticism can

  485. be destructive,

  486. but there's

  487. something deep

  488. within us that

  489. thinks,

  490. but is

  491. there a

  492. place for

  493. positive

  494. criticism?

  495. perhaps there

  496. is,

  497. particularly

  498. when we

  499. read in

  500. the Bible

  501. in Leviticus

    Leviticus 19 chapter mention

  502. chapter 19

  503. in the Old

  504. Testament where

  505. it says,

  506. you shall

  507. rebuke your

  508. neighbour and

  509. not allow

  510. sin upon

  511. them.

  512. In other

  513. words,

  514. perhaps we've

  515. got a

  516. responsibility to

  517. point out

  518. something in

  519. somebody else

  520. that's not

  521. right.

  522. It would be

  523. wrong to

  524. not point

  525. that out,

  526. so where

  527. do we go

  528. with that?

  529. Number of

  530. thoughts,

  531. firstly,

  532. we need

  533. to remember

  534. that in

  535. Leviticus,

  536. when we

  537. read those

  538. very verses

  539. that I

  540. have just

  541. read to

  542. you just

  543. then,

  544. those verses

  545. are immediately

  546. preceded with

  547. warnings against

  548. spreading slander

  549. and warnings

  550. against nursing

  551. inner hatred.

  552. That's really

  553. important stuff

  554. because we

  555. can get the

  556. wrong end of

  557. the picture.

  558. I want to

  559. read to you

  560. another quote,

  561. it comes from

  562. one of my

  563. favourite books

  564. in the last

  565. few years

  566. called

  567. Sacred Cows

  568. Make Great

  569. Barbecues.

  570. It challenges

  571. some of what

  572. we think is

  573. popular wisdom

  574. among Christians

  575. and one of

  576. them,

  577. the bit I

  578. want to read

  579. to you now,

  580. in this book

  581. the author,

  582. Dave Gilpin,

  583. talks about

  584. how in recent

  585. years we've

  586. had this idea

  587. that we've

  588. got to be

  589. real,

  590. we've got to

  591. be real and

  592. authentic with

  593. each other,

  594. which there's

  595. a truth in

  596. that,

  597. but that

  598. gets translated

  599. to mean

  600. the moment

  601. you think

  602. it,

  603. you've got

  604. to go and

  605. say it.

  606. He says

  607. this,

  608. when someone

  609. comes up to

  610. me and

  611. says,

  612. can I be

  613. honest with

  614. you,

  615. I fear

  616. the worst.

  617. I figure

  618. that I'm

  619. about to

  620. have a

  621. truckload

  622. of

  623. disappointment,

  624. discontentment

  625. and general

  626. disarray

  627. tipped all

  628. over my

  629. lap.

  630. It may

  631. be honest

  632. with how

  633. the person

  634. feels.

  635. It's

  636. often not

  637. honest with

  638. the real

  639. state of

  640. what their

  641. new hearts

  642. should be

  643. in Christ

  644. and the

  645. transforming

  646. and active

  647. work of

  648. the Holy

  649. Spirit.

  650. Being

  651. sincere to

  652. emotion is

  653. okay.

  654. Being sincere

  655. to circumstances

  656. is okay.

  657. But it's not

  658. the basis of

  659. a powerful

  660. life of an

  661. overcomer who

  662. draws strength

  663. down from

  664. heaven and

  665. breaks through

  666. to new

  667. levels of

  668. success and

  669. victory.

  670. That comes

  671. from sincerity

  672. to faith

  673. and the

  674. word of

  675. God.

  676. Emotional

  677. sincerity

  678. must be

  679. tempered by

  680. real truth.

  681. There's a

  682. time for a

  683. healthy disclosure

  684. of pent-up

  685. emotion,

  686. but it should

  687. be kept in

  688. the private

  689. place of

  690. either your

  691. personal

  692. devotion or,

  693. on rare

  694. occasions,

  695. your inner

  696. circle of

  697. loved ones

  698. who are

  699. not offended

  700. by your

  701. general

  702. rattiness.

  703. Usually,

  704. your emotions

  705. never carry

  706. with them

  707. the whole

  708. truth or

  709. the right

  710. truth,

  711. and that's

  712. why,

  713. when flaunted

  714. under the

  715. guise of

  716. sincerity,

  717. they become

  718. detrimental and

  719. often destructive.

  720. It only takes

  721. a few seconds

  722. of vindictive

  723. honesty to

  724. cut someone's

  725. head off.

  726. It takes a

  727. lot longer,

  728. however,

  729. to sew it

  730. back on

  731. again,

  732. and even

  733. then,

  734. it doesn't

  735. quite swivel

  736. the way it

  737. used to.

  738. Now,

  739. let's just

  740. come back to

  741. this theme

  742. of,

  743. is there a

  744. time when it

  745. is right to

  746. speak to

  747. others?

  748. Because there

  749. it is.

  750. Being a

  751. Christian is not

  752. about just

  753. going through

  754. life,

  755. never saying

  756. an uncritical

  757. word about

  758. anything or

  759. anyone,

  760. there's a

  761. sense in

  762. which,

  763. of course,

  764. we have a

  765. responsibility to

  766. one another.

  767. If somebody you

  768. truly love,

  769. you're looking

  770. out for them,

  771. they're going

  772. wrong,

  773. there is a

  774. responsibility to

  775. point that

  776. out.

  777. So how can

  778. we somehow

  779. put a

  780. brake on

  781. that human

  782. instinct to

  783. talk negatively

  784. in a way that

  785. can do the

  786. very best that

  787. we can to

  788. ensure that if

  789. we're going to

  790. be critical,

  791. it's done in

  792. a genuinely,

  793. and I mean

  794. that genuinely

  795. loving way?

  796. How can we

  797. speak the

  798. truth,

  799. but speak it

  800. in love?

  801. Well,

  802. there's no

  803. easy,

  804. straightforward

  805. answer to

  806. that question,

  807. but I'll just

  808. share with you

  809. my own personal

  810. thoughts on that,

  811. which I try my

  812. very best to

  813. apply,

  814. and I don't

  815. always get this

  816. right.

  817. But the first

  818. principle,

  819. I think,

  820. is to slam

  821. brakes on.

  822. So if you've

  823. got it inside

  824. you and you're

  825. just bursting to

  826. get those words

  827. out, just try and

  828. put the brake on.

  829. And by that,

  830. I don't mean just

  831. a few seconds,

  832. it may be a few

  833. days.

  834. Genuinely.

  835. If you can,

  836. take it away,

  837. think about it,

  838. and pray about it,

  839. and as you do so,

  840. ask the following

  841. questions.

  842. First, what's your

  843. motivation for

  844. bringing a word of

  845. criticism, or what

  846. could be construed as

  847. criticism, to another

  848. human being?

  849. What is your

  850. motivation?

  851. Is your desire to

  852. point out the

  853. problem motivated by

  854. a genuine, genuine

  855. concern for them?

  856. Secondly, ask the

  857. question, how would

  858. you feel if you

  859. were to be on the

  860. receiving end of

  861. the words of

  862. advice or counsel

  863. that you are

  864. thinking to share

  865. with them?

  866. If it was

  867. reversed, how

  868. would you feel?

  869. And third, and

  870. this is going to

  871. sound like I'm

  872. being facetious, but

  873. it's a genuinely

  874. serious question.

  875. Ask yourself, am

  876. I deep, deep

  877. within me, am I

  878. secretly getting

  879. pleasure out of

  880. this?

  881. negative thinking,

  882. negative talking

  883. nurtures and

  884. nurses negative

  885. thinking within

  886. us.

  887. It's as simple

  888. as that.

  889. So when it

  890. comes to the

  891. call to be

  892. worshipping

  893. Christians, not

  894. just as an

  895. activity that we

  896. engage with on a

  897. Sunday, but

  898. something that

  899. should infiltrate

  900. our entire

  901. lives, what

  902. might we say

  903. then about the

  904. more positive

  905. dimension of

  906. the way we

  907. talk?

  908. What might we

  909. say about

  910. positive speech?

  911. Well, whereas

  912. we've just been

  913. thinking of the

  914. danger of

  915. gossip and the

  916. danger of

  917. criticism, let's

  918. think now about

  919. the power of

  920. encouragement and

  921. the power of

  922. being thankful.

  923. See,

  924. encouragement,

  925. bringing words of

  926. encouragement to a

  927. human being, may

  928. not seem like a

  929. big deal to us as

  930. the person saying

  931. it to the other,

  932. but it can make

  933. all the difference.

  934. I had a story

  935. about a minister.

  936. He'd served quite a

  937. few years in a

  938. church and he was

  939. moving on to a

  940. new appointment.

  941. The church was

  942. having a send-off

  943. due for him and

  944. his family and

  945. there was a bit of

  946. a bun fight

  947. afterwards and

  948. they were serving

  949. tea and a lady

  950. came up to this

  951. minister over a

  952. cup of tea and

  953. said, you know,

  954. your successor,

  955. the next minister

  956. that's coming,

  957. you know, I

  958. know, I just

  959. know he's never

  960. going to be as

  961. good as you.

  962. Looking rather

  963. embarrassed but also

  964. slightly flattered,

  965. the minister sort

  966. of said, well,

  967. you know.

  968. But before he could

  969. say anything, the

  970. lady continued.

  971. She said, I know he

  972. won't be as good as

  973. you because I've been

  974. in this place now for

  975. several decades.

  976. I've seen seven

  977. ministers come and

  978. go and every one of

  979. them has been worse

  980. than the previous

  981. one.

  982. The power of

  983. positive speech,

  984. bringing encouragement

  985. to somebody else,

  986. actually not only

  987. encourages them, it

  988. encourages us.

  989. When we speak

  990. positively to somebody

  991. else, it makes us

  992. feel good.

  993. If you say something

  994. to somebody else that

  995. is a positive word, I

  996. can guarantee you

  997. will come away from

  998. it feeling better.

  999. The other thing,

  1000. the last thing, is

  1001. thankfulness.

  1002. You see, thankfulness

  1003. and positive talking

  1004. and positive thinking

  1005. go hand in hand.

  1006. I'll share with you

  1007. what coincidentally

  1008. happens to be another

  1009. Jewish story, if I

  1010. like it.

  1011. it's a story that's

  1012. told about a woman

  1013. called Anna

  1014. Kebich.

  1015. And Anna Kebich was

  1016. known to be somebody

  1017. who was always, always

  1018. complaining.

1019. And she used to use

  1020. the most rich imagery

  1021. to describe her

  1022. problems.

  1023. All day long she

  1024. would be talking about,

1025. you know, I have so

  1026. little money, my

  1027. clothes are like

  1028. rags.

  1029. She would say, my

1030. back is so stiff, it's

1031. as stiff as the walls

  1032. of Jericho.

1033. My house is so small

  1034. I can hardly move

  1035. around in it.

1036. I have to walk so

  1037. far every day to

  1038. draw water that my

  1039. feet are swollen like

  1040. melons.

  1041. My children, they

  1042. never ever come and

  1043. see me.

  1044. Well, she was known

  1045. for this.

  1046. She would always,

  1047. always complain, never

  1048. say anything positive.

1049. And one day she was

  1050. in the middle of

  1051. complaining to herself

  1052. and feeling sorry for

  1053. herself, saying, I've

  1054. so little money, my

1055. clothes are like rags, my

1056. back is as stiff as the

  1057. walls of Jericho.

1058. My house is so small, I

  1059. cannot move around

  1060. inside.

1061. I have to walk so far

1062. that my feet swell up,

1063. that my feet are like

  1064. watermelons, and my

  1065. children never come and

  1066. see me.

1067. And on top of all that,

  1068. she noticed that her

  1069. nose was itching.

1070. It was itching, and no

  1071. matter how hard she

1072. scratched at her nose, it

  1073. would not stop itching.

1074. So she went to her

  1075. rabbi.

  1076. She said, Rabbi,

  1077. rabbi, everything is

  1078. going wrong.

1079. The rabbi looked at her

  1080. and said, I suppose you're

1081. going to tell me all

  1082. about it.

1083. She said, too right, I'm

1084. going to tell you all

  1085. about it.

1086. My back is as stiff as

  1087. the walls of Jericho.

1088. My house is so small, I

  1089. cannot move around

  1090. inside it.

  1091. I have no money.

1092. I live in rags for

  1093. clothes.

  1094. My children never come

  1095. and see me.

1096. I have to walk so far

1097. every day to draw water

1098. that my feet are swollen

  1099. like melons.

1100. And to top it all, I

  1101. woke up this morning

1102. morning and my nose is

  1103. itching and it won't

  1104. stop.

1105. Rabbi, what am I to

  1106. do?

  1107. The rabbi said, Anna

  1108. Kebich, you have what

1109. is known as the Kebich

  1110. itch.

  1111. The complainer's itch.

1112. And its meaning is this.

1113. And I want you to think

1114. about it every time you

  1115. scratch your nose.

  1116. However you consider

  1117. yourself, so you shall

  1118. be.

  1119. Well, she wasn't really

  1120. that satisfied with that

1121. advice, but she knew it

1122. was as good as it was

1123. going to get, so off she

  1124. went.

1125. She went to bed that

  1126. night.

1127. The next day she woke

  1128. up and to her

  1129. astonishment, she noticed

  1130. that there had been

  1131. several changes overnight.

  1132. She had radically

  1133. increased in size, such

1134. that her arms were poking

1135. out of the windows of

1136. her house and her legs

  1137. were jutting out through

  1138. the door.

  1139. She literally could not

  1140. move inside.

1141. She was dressed in rags,

  1142. not clothes.

  1143. Her back, she turned

  1144. around, seemed to be

  1145. rather solid.

  1146. She noticed it had

1147. turned into the walls of

  1148. Jericho.

1149. She looked down to the

1150. end of her legs and she

  1151. saw two melons rather

  1152. than feet.

1153. And her nose was itchy.

1154. She scratched away at that

1155. nose and as she did so,

  1156. she remembered the words

  1157. of her rabbi.

  1158. However you consider

  1159. yourself, so you shall

  1160. be.

  1161. As she scratched away,

  1162. she thought about her

  1163. life and she thought

  1164. about the lives of

  1165. several other people that

1166. she knew for the first

  1167. time.

  1168. She thought to herself,

  1169. you know, okay, I don't

1170. have a lot of money but I

  1171. get by.

1172. I know a lot of people who

1173. have a lot less than me.

1174. She thought, you know, my

  1175. house is small.

  1176. But actually it's quite

  1177. cozy.

  1178. I don't know I'd manage

  1179. anything that much bigger.

1180. She thought to herself, you

1181. know, my back is stiff at

  1182. times but I'm a lot

1183. healthier than a lot of

1184. people are at my age in

  1185. life.

1186. She thought about that walk

1187. that she took every day to

1188. draw water and she said,

  1189. sometimes I feel tired but I

1190. guess there are things about

1191. that walk that I enjoy and

  1192. if I didn't take that walk

1193. each day, I'd never see the

  1194. sunshine, I'd probably stay

  1195. indoors feeling even more

  1196. sorry for myself.

1197. And as for my children, well,

1198. I wish I did see them more

  1199. but I suppose there's something

1200. inside of me that at least

1201. makes me thankful that they

1202. are independent enough to take

  1203. care of themselves.

1204. And she thought of these

1205. things and as she scratched

1206. away at her nose, so things

  1207. began to change again.

1208. She came back to normal

  1209. sides.

1210. The rags went and were

  1211. replaced with clothes.

1212. The wool turned into a

  1213. back.

  1214. The melons were gone.

  1215. Howsoever you consider

1216. yourself, so you shall be.

1217. Whenever the rabbis tell that

1218. story, they always finish by

1219. saying this, may your noses

  1220. itch forever.
