  1. And we're going to look together, I know that you're doing a series through this book, The Christian Atheist, by someone whose surname no one seems better to pronounce.

  2. I'm going to go with Craig Groeschel, and we're going to be looking at a chapter there, but I also particularly want to look at that passage from Romans chapter 6.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  3. I don't know whether we can get the words up, but I particularly, if you can get them up, those last three or four verses of it would be great.

  4. But over my 14 years of preaching in my previous parishes down in Taunton, I discovered that there was one subject that time and again would create a great deal of discomfort.

  5. And always, and I say always, guarantee that at least a couple of emails from men would come to me in the week asking if they might meet up with me for a coffee and a chat.

  6. I wonder if you can imagine what the subject matter was.

  7. Clive's worked it out, I think.

  8. Pornography.

  9. In 2015, Premier Christianity magazine did a survey in which 50% of Christians, not just men, admitted viewing adult content online at least once a month.

  10. And 42% saying that they had an addiction.

  11. Christians.

  12. It's exactly the same figure as it is for non-Christians in all the surveys.

  13. Of course, it's not the only issue that Christians struggle with.

  14. For some, it's overworking, verging on workaholism, if that's the right words.

  15. For others, it will be anger, a temper that they can't control.

  16. For others, it will be greed, not just food greed, but materialism.

  17. Just that constant desire to have more, to have bigger, to have better, to have newer.

  18. For others, it's simple lust, just that inability to keep looking and to entertain those unhelpful conversations in the office.

  19. That just lead you down paths that you know are not right.

  20. Or just the words we say, the gossip that we get into, that negativity that we get into, the way we speak about people when they're not in the room.

  21. Patterns of behaviour in our lives that we know that are not of God.

  22. And yet many of us feel powerless to change.

  23. And the point that Grosjeal is making in the chapter that we're looking at of his book is,

  24. it is a dangerous thing that can happen in a Christian.

  25. That they stop believing that change can happen.

  26. It is easy to surrender, in a sense to raise the white flag.

  27. And say, yes, God is changing me in all sorts of areas.

  28. But there are one or two things that persist.

  29. That I seem to get nowhere.

  30. They seem to have a grip.

  31. And no matter what I do, nothing changes.

  32. Therefore, I stop believing that God can change me.

  33. Yes, you can do it in lots of areas, but just not in this area.

  34. But I think there's an even bigger danger than even Grosjeal picks out, which I think our passage picks out.

  35. Because it becomes easy then to swallow the lie that is based on a wonderful truth.

  36. It is easy to swallow a lie that is based on a wonderful truth.

  37. Because in Romans 6, the wonderful truth of Romans so far is that we are saved by grace.

  38. I hope you know that.

  39. I hope you understand the gospel.

  40. That we are saved, we are put right by grace.

  41. Not by what we do.

  42. Not by perfect obedience to the rules.

  43. Christianity is not about being better.

  44. Being good.

  45. Even though most people think that's what it's about.

  46. It is not.

  47. It is that by faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we are made right with God.

  48. We are forgiven.

  49. We are cleansed.

  50. We are washed clean.

  51. In chapter 5, verse 1.

  52. Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

  53. through whom we have gained access by faith into his grace, in which we now stand.

  54. It is all of grace.

  55. Unmerited.

  56. Undeserved.

  57. Unconditional love and forgiveness.

  58. But then there's a question at the start of chapter 6.

  59. Which is this.

  60. Shall we sin then, so that grace may increase?

  61. Or in an old version I love.

  62. Shall we sin that grace may abound?

  63. See, what it's saying is, if forgiveness and peace with God, if grace is always available,

  64. what does it matter then if we keep on sinning?

  65. In fact, logic tells us, and was beginning to tell some of Paul's readers,

  66. well, surely then, the more I sin, the more I get of God's grace.

  67. Therefore, hey, why don't we sin more and get more grace?

  68. That was the implication.

  69. And you know, it's not long before we find ourselves then perhaps saying,

  70. in the situations we face,

  71. well, this area of my life, this addiction that's got hold of me,

  72. this behaviour that's got a grip of me,

  73. this sin that's taken a hold,

  74. I start to convince myself,

  75. well, does it really matter that much?

  76. I mean, after all,

  77. God is gracious.

  78. Grace means I'll still be forgiven.

  79. So actually, maybe I don't really need to worry about it.

  80. Maybe I don't really need to deal with it.

  81. Because I'm going to be forgiven anyway.

  82. And then we don't take it seriously.

  83. We convince ourselves it's okay.

  84. And I love Paul's response.

  85. And if you saw it there,

  86. if you go to the next verse,

  87. I love his response.

  88. By no means, exclamation mark.

  89. He's going, no!

  90. No way!

  91. You've got it wrong.

  92. If that's the kind of thinking you've got,

  93. no!

  94. Disaster lies down that way of thinking.

  95. And he goes on to say,

  96. as Christians,

  97. he says in verse 2,

  98. we are those who have died to sin.

  99. How can we live in it anymore?

  100. Sin is no longer to have control of our lives.

  101. Sin is part of the old life,

  102. the banished life.

  103. Verse 3,

  104. he uses the symbol of baptism.

  105. So he pictures that when we're baptised,

  106. do you have a Baptist Paul baptistry in here?

  107. So you kind of do the down and the up.

  108. Great!

  109. Well, you know the symbolism

  110. of when people go down into the water,

  111. it is being as if we are dying with Christ,

  112. the old self,

  113. the old me,

  114. with all its behaviours

  115. going down into the water,

  116. and then I rise again,

  117. like Jesus rising from the dead.

  118. But with a new life,

  119. with new priorities,

  120. with a new master of my life.

  121. Baptism symbolises that moment of coming to faith,

  122. which is decisive.

  123. The old ways have gone,

  124. the old ways to have no more part of my life.

  125. So instead of thinking,

  126. I can't change,

  127. or worse,

  128. it's okay if I don't change,

  129. Paul says,

  130. by no means.

  131. Verse 11,

  132. count yourselves dead to sin

  133. and alive to God in Jesus Christ.

  134. You see,

  135. Paul is really clear with us.

  136. But also Paul is honest.

  137. Because I think Paul was a bloke.

  138. I know he was a bloke.

  139. And therefore he was a bloke

  140. who struggled with the stuff

  141. blokes struggle with.

  142. And if Paul had been Pauline writing,

  143. then Pauline would have known

  144. the stuff that women struggle with.

  145. That is,

  146. Paul is also realistic.

  147. And if you go into chapter 7 of Romans,

  148. you discover him talking about

  149. the stuff I want to do,

  150. that's the stuff I can't do.

  151. The stuff I don't want to do,

  152. I keep on doing.

  153. I'm a complete mess,

  154. is my kind of translation

  155. of what he's saying in verse 7.

  156. And so Paul then gives us

  157. what I think is like a spiritual CT scan.

  158. He kind of shows us

  159. what is really going on inside of us.

  160. And unless you understand

  161. what's going on inside of you,

  162. you won't be equipped

  163. to deal with what's going on.

  164. You will always end up

  165. a victim to all of this stuff.

  166. And it comes in verses 12 to 13

  167. of Romans 6.

  168. And he basically says this.

  169. You've got to picture your body,

  170. what he describes,

  171. your mortal body,

  172. as being like a castle

  173. or a fortified city.

  174. Can you imagine that?

  175. That's the kind of imagery he's using.

  176. Imagine that your body

  177. is like a castle

  178. or a fortified city.

  179. And you need to wise up

  180. to what's going on

  181. right here,

  182. right now,

  183. on a Sunday morning

  184. in Clevedon

  185. inside your body.

  186. And he tells us

  187. three or four key things.

  188. The first thing he says

  189. in verse 12 is this.

  190. There is a throne

  191. at the heart of your life.

  192. There is a throne

  193. at the heart of your life.

  194. In verse 12 he says,

  195. don't let sin reign.

  196. The word reign

  197. is just a verb

  198. that goes with king.

  199. And the throne

  200. is that on which

  201. a king sits.

  202. The question is,

  203. who sits on the throne

  204. in your life?

  205. In your mortal body,

  206. who is sitting on the throne?

  207. Who is master?

  208. Who or what

  209. is actually

  210. in control of your life?

  211. You see,

  212. is it Jesus Christ,

  213. the rightful king?

  214. Or is it actually

  215. something else?

  216. Groeschel, in his book,

  217. poses some questions

  218. that might help you

  219. to work out

  220. if something other

  221. than Jesus Christ

  222. is actually sitting

  223. on the throne

  224. in your mortal body?

  225. And he asks

  226. some of these questions.

  227. Firstly,

  228. do those closest to you,

  229. your family and friends,

  230. see that there are

  231. some real issues

  232. that you are struggling

  233. with in your life?

  234. You may not see it,

  235. but do they spot something?

  236. Habits?

  237. Things that are going on?

  238. Secondly,

  239. do the behaviours

  240. that you're struggling

  241. with continue

  242. even though

  243. you know

  244. they're hurting you

  245. and maybe sometimes

  246. hurting others?

  247. You know the consequences,

  248. but still

  249. you keep

  250. doing the same things.

  251. Thirdly,

  252. do you actually

  253. find yourself

  254. arranging your daily schedule,

  255. your weekly schedule

  256. around those things?

  257. Do they start to

  258. take control

  259. of your diary?

  260. Fourthly,

  261. can you go weak

  262. without it?

  263. Are these patterns,

  264. these behaviours,

  265. things that you see

  266. coming up week

  267. after week

  268. after week?

  269. And then lastly,

  270. are you denying

  271. or trying to keep it secret?

  272. Are these things

  273. hidden away

  274. that you don't let

  275. anyone else

  276. around you see?

  277. Good questions

  278. that you have to ask

  279. yourself

  280. to know

  281. who is actually

  282. sitting on the throne?

  283. Because Paul then says,

  284. secondly,

  285. there is a challenger

  286. to the throne.

  287. Verse 12,

  288. don't let sin reign.

  289. There is a rebel

  290. who wants to lead a coup

  291. and gain the throne

  292. and take control

  293. of your life.

  294. And that rebel is sin.

  295. Sin wants control

  296. of your life

  297. and we are called

  298. on to resist it.

  299. But third,

  300. there are loyal servants

  301. who if not careful

  302. will defect

  303. to the other side.

  304. See,

  305. instead of being servants

  306. of you

  307. as you seek

  308. to live under

  309. the kingship of Jesus,

  310. they will jump over

  311. the wall,

  312. team up with the enemy

  313. and they will cause havoc.

  314. Verse 12,

  315. don't let sin reign

  316. in your mortal body

  317. so that you obey

  318. its evil desires.

  319. It's that word

  320. desires.

  321. See,

  322. our desires

  323. are normally

  324. loyal servants

  325. of ours,

  326. aren't they?

  327. We have lives

  328. full of desires.

  329. These are the things

  330. that lead us

  331. to do what we do.

  332. We have lots

  333. of good desires.

  334. We have desires

  335. for food,

  336. desires for drink,

  337. desires for love

  338. and companionship,

  339. desire for sex,

  340. desire for justice,

  341. desire for rest

  342. and sleep,

  343. a desire for coffee.

  344. And they're all

  345. good desires.

  346. They serve us well.

  347. They are our loyal servants.

  348. They lead us to do

  349. the stuff we do

  350. day in,

  351. day out.

  352. But Paul is saying

  353. if you're not careful,

  354. your desires,

  355. those loyal servants,

  356. can be taken captive

  357. by the enemy,

  358. by sin.

  359. And what were once

  360. good desires

  361. easily become

  362. evil desires.

  363. So the desire for food,

  364. which has served us well,

  365. easily becomes

  366. a desire for greed,

  367. for more.

  368. Whether it's physical greed

  369. or materialism,

  370. wanting more,

  371. wanting what others

  372. have got,

  373. covetousness.

  374. A desire for drink

  375. serves us well

  376. until it takes us captive.

  377. And we want to drink

  378. too much.

  379. A desire for sex

  380. serves well

  381. until that desire

  382. for sex

  383. with someone

  384. who's not our spouse

  385. starts to take over.

  386. A desire for love

  387. and companionship

  388. is a great desire

  389. until that desire

  390. becomes a desire

  391. that comes out of lust

  392. and an addiction

  393. to pornography.

  394. A desire for rest

  395. and sleep

  396. actually becomes

  397. slothfulness

  398. and laziness.

  399. A desire for justice

  400. and fairness

  401. easily becomes

  402. a desire to get even

  403. that leads to anger

  404. and gossip

  405. and bitterness.

  406. Do you see,

  407. good desires,

  408. which were meant

  409. to be loyal servants,

  410. suddenly,

  411. when taken hold of,

  412. when they defect

  413. to the enemy,

  414. the devil,

  415. when they defect

  416. to sin,

  417. or suddenly

  418. they become dangerous.

  419. And the reason

  420. why they're so dangerous

  421. is this,

  422. is that they offer

  423. a false promise.

  424. They offer you

  425. the false promise

  426. that if you pursue

  427. your longings,

  428. life will be so much better.

  429. If I get even,

  430. I'll be so much better.

  431. If I pursue

  432. that relationship,

  433. which is not the one

  434. with my husband or wife,

  435. actually that's where

  436. I'll find fulfillment.

  437. It is a false promise.

  438. We need to take seriously

  439. our desires

  440. and our longings.

  441. We need to monitor them

  442. and watch them

  443. and take account

  444. of what's really going on.

  445. Which then leads

  446. to the fourth thing

  447. that I think Paul says.

  448. That there are also

  449. battles in this,

  450. sorry,

  451. there are also weapons

  452. in this battle.

  453. Verse 13.

  454. Do not offer

  455. any part of yourself

  456. as an instrument

  457. of wickedness.

  458. That word instrument

  459. is the same word

  460. that's used for weapon

  461. in other parts

  462. of the New Testament.

  463. Same word.

  464. And what he's saying

  465. is this,

  466. that the parts of your body,

  467. your tongue,

  468. your mouth,

  469. your stomach,

  470. your eyes,

  471. your sexual organs,

  472. when desires

  473. are captured by sin,

  474. they start to turn

  475. your body parts

  476. into weapons of sin.

  477. If you want to know

  478. a great example of that,

  479. go to the book of James.

  480. In the book of James,

  481. it talks about this thing

  482. in your mouth.

  483. Turn to your neighbour

  484. and stick your tongue out.

  485. You're allowed to do that.

  486. Turn to your neighbour

  487. and stick your tongue out.

  488. Show them your tongue.

  489. If you know the book of James,

  490. the book of James

  491. will tell you

  492. that this tiny little bit

  493. of floppiness

  494. in our mouth

  495. has extraordinary power.

  496. It has power

  497. to build up

  498. and to encourage

  499. and to make

  500. someone's day,

  501. doesn't it?

  502. This little thing here.

  503. But if we have a desire

  504. suddenly to hurt

  505. and not heal,

  506. our tongue

  507. becomes the most

  508. destructive weapon

  509. known to mankind.

  510. We can destroy people

  511. with this floppy thing

  512. in our mouth,

  513. can't we?

  514. Do you see

  515. how when your desires

  516. are taken captive

  517. by sin,

  518. suddenly bits of your body

  519. become dangerous weapons?

  520. Do you see,

  521. suddenly it all

  522. looks a bit different,

  523. doesn't it?

  524. Paul says,

  525. wake up.

  526. Wake up to the reality.

  527. You are in a fierce battle.

  528. A battle for who

  529. will be king

  530. of your mortal body.

  531. Be clear, he says.

  532. God is the true king.

  533. He has the rightful place

  534. on the throne.

  535. My desires,

  536. my body parts

  537. are meant to be used

  538. for his glory.

  539. It is simply not right

  540. for us to say,

  541. okay,

  542. as long as some

  543. of my desires,

  544. some of my body parts

  545. are being used for God,

  546. well, it doesn't matter

  547. too much

  548. if one or two

  549. are being used for sin.

  550. It'll be okay.

  551. Paul says,

  552. by no means,

  553. exclamation mark.

  554. No, it won't

  555. because the key is this.

  556. Sin wants control.

  557. You see,

  558. sin is not just an act.

  559. It's a power.

  560. It is not the thing I do.

  561. It is a power

  562. that takes over.

  563. Sin wants to reign.

  564. And sin is not satisfied

  565. to just have control

  566. of one bit of your life.

  567. You see,

  568. when you've got a castle,

  569. the danger is,

  570. if you leave one window open

  571. or one ladder out at night,

  572. it'll come in

  573. and it won't just take over

  574. one room.

  575. It won't be long

  576. before it's knocking down

  577. and knocking down

  578. the rooms

  579. in the rest of the palace

  580. because its aim

  581. is not to have control

  582. of one room.

  583. It wants control

  584. of a city.

  585. So it's not good

  586. to say,

  587. well, it doesn't matter

  588. as long as there's only

  589. one area of my life

  590. where sin seems

  591. to have a grip

  592. because it won't be long

  593. before it's taken over others

  594. and I've seen it time

  595. and time again

  596. in parish ministry.

  597. Where people struggle

  598. in one area

  599. become less and less frequent

  600. on a Sunday,

  601. I've seen it

  602. time and time

  603. and time again.

  604. So how then

  605. do we fight the battle?

  606. How do we begin

  607. to see change

  608. in these areas?

  609. These areas

  610. that become

  611. very difficult for us.

  612. Well, Grosje will just

  613. give some very quick advice

  614. that I'm going to give you

  615. as I finish.

  616. The first is this,

  617. you need to admit it.

  618. You see,

  619. when in sermons

  620. I mention the word

  621. pornography,

  622. I've discovered

  623. I never have to preach

  624. on pornography,

  625. I just have to say

  626. the word.

  627. I always say

  628. you need to bring it

  629. out of the darkness

  630. into the light.

  631. It's true of all sin.

  632. You have to bring it

  633. out of the darkness

  634. into the light.

  635. That means you have to

  636. admit it to yourself,

  637. to God.

  638. But the danger is

  639. all of those things

  640. you can fool yourself in,

  641. I think.

  642. Even with God.

  643. And I always say

  644. you need to admit it

  645. to another person.

  646. You need to speak out loud

  647. to somebody

  648. I have a problem with.

  649. Dot, dot, dot.

  650. I have an

  651. accountability group,

  652. two other vicars

  653. that I meet with,

  654. three times a year

  655. for two days.

  656. They have permission

  657. to ask me every question

  658. that I don't want

  659. them to ask.

  660. And in fact,

  661. we have a thing

  662. at the end

  663. which is where

  664. someone will ask me,

  665. Adrian,

  666. what question

  667. do you not want

  668. me to ask you today?

  669. So I have to tell

  670. them everything.

  671. Sex life,

  672. what I'm looking at

  673. online,

  674. about how

  675. I'm being

  676. a parent,

  677. a husband,

  678. all of those things.

  679. And we've been

  680. doing this for 20 years.

  681. They know when I'm lying.

  682. Admit it.

  683. Secondly,

  684. seek the power of God.

  685. The context of this passage

  686. is not that we are

  687. ever on the throne.

  688. It is not that

  689. we're on the throne

  690. and therefore

  691. we have to have

  692. the power to deal

  693. with what's going on.

  694. The power doesn't

  695. lie with us.

  696. No, God is on the throne.

  697. Power comes from him.

  698. Which is why

  699. when you get to

  700. chapter 8 of Romans,

  701. we're told about

  702. the Holy Spirit.

  703. In chapter 8,

  704. verse 13,

  705. if you live according

  706. to the flesh,

  707. you'll die.

  708. But if by the Spirit

  709. you put to death

  710. the misdeeds of the body,

  711. you will live.

  712. So the message

  713. I want to make sure

  714. you hear today

  715. is not just try harder.

  716. Because if you just

  717. try harder,

  718. you won't get anywhere.

  719. So that is not my message.

  720. If that's what you're hearing,

  721. that is not the message

  722. I'm bringing.

  723. You need the Spirit of God.

  724. Indeed,

  725. in chapter 8,

  726. verse 11,

  727. we're told

  728. that the power available

  729. to us in the Spirit

  730. is the same power

  731. that raised Jesus

  732. from the dead.

  733. That is the kind of power

  734. you need.

  735. You will not overcome

  736. these things

  737. unless you have the power

  738. that raised Jesus

  739. from the dead.

  740. But the joy is that

  741. power is available

  742. to each and every one of us.

  743. Thirdly,

  744. ditch the excuses.

  745. I think these are the words

  746. actually that come from Groschel.

  747. Before you begin

  748. your journey towards change,

  749. brace yourself.

  750. The excuse monster

  751. is waiting in the shadows.

  752. And if you've ever had to

  753. tackle anything like this,

  754. you will know

  755. how easily that comes

  756. because it is so tough.

  757. So what you start to do

  758. is you start to justify

  759. or play down

  760. how important

  761. this area of your life is.

  762. It doesn't really matter.

  763. It's not such a big deal.

  764. Or we justify it.

  765. Sin,

  766. I think the devil,

  767. because the devil

  768. is the master of lies,

  769. is the one who whispers

  770. to try and talk you

  771. out of the change.

  772. And I think you have to

  773. capture those lies

  774. and confront them

  775. and say,

  776. no, that's not true.

  777. It does matter.

  778. And then finally,

  779. cut the ties.

  780. That's what Groschel

  781. talks about.

  782. Paul once wrote,

  783. do not be misled.

  784. Bad company

  785. cuts good ties.

  786. Are you putting yourself

  787. in places

  788. and situations

  789. and company

  790. that feed the wrong desires

  791. and lead you

  792. into the things

  793. that you're doing,

  794. that you know

  795. a lot of God?

  796. If you are,

  797. take drastic action.

  798. Jesus said,

  799. if your eye causes you

  800. to sin,

  801. pluck it out.

  802. And we go,

  803. oh, he didn't really mean that.

  804. No, what he meant was

  805. take drastic action.

  806. So one guy

  807. who after a sermon

  808. like this

  809. came and saw me

  810. to talk about

  811. the problem he had

  812. with pornography,

  813. he did two things

  814. as a result.

  815. The first thing was

  816. he loaded on his computer

  817. software that meant

  818. a list of all the sites

  819. he looked at

  820. were emailed

  821. to a friend of his

  822. every single week.

  823. And secondly,

  824. he moved his computer

  825. into the living room

  826. so it was always

  827. in a public place

  828. where the rest

  829. of the family were.

  830. That was his

  831. equipment of plucking

  832. out his eye.

  833. He made drastic change

  834. to try and cut the ties.

  835. So as I finish,

  836. I want to be honest

  837. and tell you,

  838. my hope this week

  839. is that Clive

  840. is going to become

  841. very busy indeed.

  842. Because my hope is

  843. that he will receive

  844. some emails

  845. asking for people

  846. to come and see him

  847. and say,

  848. Clive,

  849. I've got a problem

  850. with whatever it is.

  851. And I know

  852. I can't go on like this.

  853. And I need to admit it.

  854. And I need someone

  855. to pray with me

  856. and then help me

  857. to do the practical things

  858. that you're going to need

  859. to start to break

  860. the chain

  861. and start to break

  862. the cycle.

  863. And if you're serious

  864. about dealing

  865. with whatever

  866. that issue is,

  867. if that is you,

  868. I want to leave you

  869. with the words

  870. of Groschel

  871. that come right

  872. at the end

  873. of his chapter.

  874. You can't change

  875. in your own power.

  876. If you feel overwhelmed

  877. by something

  878. bigger than you,

  879. let the one

  880. who is bigger

  881. than all things

  882. be the power

  883. you need

  884. in weakness.

  885. from the other

  886. that happens.

  887. The way

  888. to the other

  889. is

  890. in your own power
