  1. Those of you who like historic novels will probably have come across the writings of somebody who is an academic historian as well as a novelist called Philippa Gregory.

  2. And reading about Tudor times, which is primarily her interest, you discover what it cost at certain times in our history to actually acknowledge the fact that you were,

  3. well, the big tension then, of course, was, and thank God these days are over, was the tension between Roman Catholicism and the Reformed faith.

  4. And if you found yourself in the wrong company or in the presence of the wrong monarch, and you admitted you were of the other parish, if I can put it in Anglican speak, you very likely lose your head for that.

  5. And I find that a kind of salutary thing to remind myself because I think today, I think it was Os Guinness who said that, rather cryptically, said that, he was talking in the 20th century,

  6. he said the 20th century church is like the St. Lawrence Seaway.

  7. We were all like, what?

  8. He said, frozen at the mouth in winter.

  9. And what I want to talk to you about today is, just so you know, I am not obsessed by the idea that sharing our faith is only about the words we use and the way we speak.

  10. If you can hang on for this evening, and this first session will probably dictate either way, whether you do or you don't.

  11. If you can, what I am going to be talking about this evening is, the impact of change in a person's life in terms of our credible witness.

  12. I mean, you can argue with a lot of things.

  13. You can argue with creeds.

  14. You can argue with clergy.

  15. You can argue with bishops.

  16. Believe me, people do.

  17. You know, I can name names.

  18. But what you can't argue with very easily is a changed life.

  19. And this evening, I want to look at that and the impact of that.

  20. But this afternoon, if you'll forgive me, and truthfully, you have no choice.

  21. And what I want to talk about is this difficult area in our culture.

  22. You know, it would be nice for me to say, why don't you do this?

  23. It's easy.

  24. But actually, I don't think it is that easy.

  25. Although I identify in our culture at the moment huge amounts of need.

  26. I think we'd all be agreed that whatever the political agenda is exercised by any political party, somehow our society seems to be on a hell-bent journey towards damaging people.

  27. And, you know, one thinks of our younger people.

  28. And, you know, the reported increase in incidence of mental health issues, issues with personal image, the impact of social media.

  29. I'm not here to tell you that's all bad.

  30. I just, you know, don't quite get it.

  31. Somebody said, you know, the worst day of my life was the day my mother learned to text.

  32. So what I want to talk to you about is this.

  33. But before I actually get around, and by the way, I want this to be as practical as I can make it.

  34. Okay?

  35. So you can decide when you leave here, am I going to act on any of this stuff?

  36. Or am I just going to, you know, write it in my journal tonight and ignore it for the rest of my time here on planet Earth?

  37. I can't make you do that.

  38. I'm rather glad I don't have that power.

  39. But what I want to say is that there are two very fundamental things that you need to think about

  40. before you will even get started on this whole idea of offering a verbal witness.

  41. Before I do that, I want to read to you this amazing narrative from 2 Kings chapter 7,

    2 Kings 7 chapter mention

  42. which I feel sure you're all desperately familiar with.

  43. But it's a remarkable story.

  44. Where we are is there's a city called Samaria,

  45. and there's an enemy army led by a rather violent king called Ben-Hadad.

  46. And his military strategy in order to capture Samaria is to lay siege to it.

  47. So there are people inside the city who can't get out.

  48. There's no logistic channel, so they're starving to death.

  49. The narrative amusingly tells us that actually they were so hungry and so desperate for food

  50. that things like a donkey's head were selling for big bucks.

  51. I mean, you know, can you imagine those of you who are cooks,

  52. you come home to your partner, those of you who got one, your wife, your husband, whatever,

  53. and say, darling, what's for lunch today?

  54. And he or she says, I got a donkey's head.

  55. Right?

  56. I can tell you you're not even smiling at the thought of that.

  57. I mean, just illustrative of how horrific the situation was.

  58. But even worse,

  59. sorry, I'm just telling you this because you need this background before I actually read the narrative.

  60. But even worse are four lepers.

  61. And they're trapped between the armies of Ben-Hadad on the outside of the city wall

  62. and the inhabitants of Samaria who are inside the wall.

  63. And you understand that leprosy wasn't just a horribly disfiguring disease,

  64. but was in fact a major kind of socially unacceptable.

  65. So these people are sitting outside and they're wondering what to do.

  66. Here's what the Bible says about them.

  67. There were four men with leprosy at the entrance of the city gate.

  68. They said to each other,

  69. why stay here until we die?

  70. If we say we'll go into the city,

  71. the famine is there and we will die.

  72. And if we stay here, we will die.

  73. That's what you call a classic Hobson's choice, right?

  74. So let's go over to the camp of the Arameans and surrender.

  75. If they spare us, we live.

  76. If they kill us, then we die.

  77. At dusk they got up and went to the camp of the Arameans.

  78. When they reached the edge of the camp, not a man was there,

  79. for the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the sound of chariots and horses and a great army.

  80. So that they said to one another,

  81. look, the king of Israel has hired the Hittite and Egyptian kings to attack us.

  82. So they got up and fled in the dusk and abandoned their tents and their horses and donkeys.

  83. They left the camp as it was and ran for their lives.

  84. The men who had leprosy reached the edge of the camp and entered one of the tents.

  85. They ate and drank and carried away silver, gold and clothes and went off and hid them.

  86. They returned and entered another tent and took some things from it and hid them also.

  87. Then they said to each other,

  88. we're not doing right.

  89. This is a day of good news and we're keeping it to ourselves.

  90. I know this is a dangerous thing for a preacher to say,

  91. but I cannot tell you how many times I preached on that text.

  92. What an amazing kind of recognition.

  93. And so the two basic requirements I want to say,

  94. before you will even get started on this business of offering any kind of verbal witness,

  95. is this.

  96. The first thing is, in whatever way, I don't think there's one way,

  97. but I think you have to have experienced the good news of the gospel

  98. before you will even have any motivation whatsoever

  99. to share the good news that hopefully has changed your life.

  100. So I said, I don't think that there is one way to do that.

  101. I think, you know, I say accepting the gospel is a bit like falling in love.

  102. You know, there are some people who are standing in a room

  103. and somebody comes into the room and they know from David,

  104. that is my future wife, my future husband.

  105. Then there's people like my wife,

  106. who, you know, looked at me for a very long time,

  107. down her nose to a certain extent,

  108. till she kind of warmed up to the idea that,

  109. you know, maybe I'm desperate enough to...

  110. Some people come to Christ like I did, literally overnight.

  111. And for other people, it's a much longer journey.

  112. And I don't think any of those experiences is inauthentic,

  113. but I do believe there needs to be a point

  114. where you realize that you are the recipient of the good news for yourself.

  115. And you don't need to just experience it

  116. if you're going to get involved in verbal witness.

  117. You need also to be pretty certain that it is good news.

  118. The Greek word for good news is the Greek word euangelion,

  119. which we translate in two ways.

  120. One is we translate it by the English word gospel,

  121. the other by the English word good news.

  122. Why?

  123. Because the gospel is very good news.

  124. And if it's good news,

  125. why wouldn't we want to tell others about it?

  126. I remember seeing a movie when I was a kid.

  127. I can't tell you the title of it.

  128. But the movie was about the world being attacked

  129. by this really dangerous bacteria.

  130. And everybody, all the scientists,

  131. were working overtime to try and find

  132. how you might get rid of this bacteria.

  133. Mixing chemicals, spraying it on the bacteria, etc., etc.

  134. It turns out that the hero of the story,

  135. who wasn't even a scientist,

  136. discovered that the best way to get rid of the bacteria

  137. is to chuck water on it.

  138. And you, just imagine,

  139. that you had found a cure for a bacteria

  140. which could wipe out the world,

  141. and you decide,

  142. I'm going to keep this to myself.

  143. Would you have any moral,

  144. don't shout out,

  145. would you have any moral conscience about that?

  146. And yet it seems,

  147. there are many of us

  148. who have experienced the good news,

  149. and are agreed that it's the best news,

  150. are very happy to keep shtun about it.

  151. I saw some data recently,

  152. incidentally,

  153. which is vaguely encouraging,

  154. and that was that,

  155. the outcome of the data was

  156. that more people at least claim

  157. to talk about their faith

  158. than anybody ever thought was likely.

  159. I don't know if that's true of you.

  160. I hope to God it is.

  161. But I want to talk to you,

  162. you know,

  163. I love that story from 2 Kings 7,

  164. because in a way it embodies the gospel.

  165. It's about those lepers

  166. who were just,

  167. you know,

  168. they had no options whatsoever.

  169. And in terms of eternity,

  170. you know,

  171. one of the things that scripture teaches us

  172. is that without Christ,

  173. your options for eternity

  174. are extremely limited.

  175. It's a story about an intervention of God.

  176. In this story,

  177. it's about an intervention of a God

  178. who makes a great big noise somehow,

  179. and people confuse that

  180. with the noise of Egyptian armies,

  181. and decide to leg it.

  182. And it's about four people

  183. who had no hope,

  184. finding hope,

  185. and deciding

  186. in the very short term

  187. that the hope they've discovered

  188. they're going to hold on to themselves.

  189. This is a day of good news,

  190. and we're keeping it to ourselves.

  191. I don't know about you.

  192. You know,

  193. I heard

  194. a message

  195. this morning

  196. that Russ preached

  197. where he stood up

  198. and owned for himself

  199. on the subject that he was to.

  200. He's like,

  201. I'm not talking at you about this.

  202. I'm talking with you about this

  203. because what I'm describing

  204. is,

  205. you know,

  206. part of me as well.

  207. He was talking about,

  208. you know,

  209. Jesus' imperative,

  210. you know,

  211. that we shouldn't worry.

  212. And look,

  213. I am saying to you,

  214. I have been tempted

  215. on more occasions than one

  216. to keep my mouth shut.

  217. I think it would be true to say,

  218. I am looking at my clergy colleagues here

  219. for some support,

  220. but I think generally,

  221. when we're in Mufti,

  222. you know,

  223. and we're out in,

  224. you know,

  225. maybe on vacation

  226. or something like that,

  227. and somebody says,

  228. you know,

  229. you've been having a cup of tea

  230. and you're starting to chat to people,

  231. and somebody says to you,

  232. so,

  233. you know,

  234. what do you do for a living?

  235. I'm like,

  236. oh,

  237. you know,

  238. shall I say

  239. I'm in middle management

  240. in a large,

  241. you know,

  242. national organization.

  243. And if I did,

  244. would I hear a cock crow

  245. in my head or something?

  246. So,

  247. but I mean,

  248. I'm tempted.

  249. But I need to tell you

  250. that some of the most amazing

  251. moments of my life

  252. have come from

  253. unplanned,

  254. inadvertent conversations

  255. when even unwillingly

  256. I have said something

  257. about my faith

  258. and somebody's life

  259. has been transformed.

  260. And that's not me saying

  261. I'm great,

  262. you know,

  263. I mean,

  264. I can tell you stories

  265. where I was extremely

  266. half-hearted

  267. about it all.

  268. So,

  269. let's just for a moment,

  270. if we may,

  271. meditate on

  272. what I would call

  273. the possibilities

  274. of the spoken word.

  275. You remember

  276. that right at the beginning

  277. in the book of Genesis

  278. when chaos brooded

  279. over the whole earth,

  280. it was God speaking

  281. into that chaos

  282. that started to form

  283. order from the chaos.

  284. The logos,

  285. the word of God,

  286. bringing order

  287. from what was

  288. kind of cosmic chaos.

  289. You can fly through

  290. the centuries a little bit

  291. and I love that verse

  292. and I think it's

  293. Psalm 107 and verse 2

  294. and I love the authorized

  295. version of this.

  296. It says,

  297. let the redeemed

  298. of the Lord say so.

  299. I like,

  300. well,

  301. I don't like,

  302. I mean,

  303. it fills me with trepidation.

  304. You know,

  305. when Jesus said,

  306. if anyone in this sinful

  307. and adulterous

  308. generations

  309. is ashamed of me,

  310. then will the Son of Man

  311. be ashamed of him

  312. or her

  313. when they return

  314. in glory.

  315. The Son of Man

  316. is kind of,

  317. Jesus' kind of,

  318. apocalyptic,

  319. speak for

  320. himself.

  321. That's worth

  322. bearing in mind,

  323. isn't it,

  324. that if

  325. we're ashamed of him,

  326. he might be ashamed

  327. of us

  328. at that moment

  329. in our lives

  330. when it will really matter.

  331. And then

  332. the day of Pentecost.

  333. I've heard so many people,

  334. you know,

  335. build a massive construction

  336. on what happened

  337. on the day of Pentecost.

  338. You know,

  339. sometimes I think

  340. the actual text

  341. of the day of Pentecost

  342. won't bear that construction.

  343. But actually,

  344. do you notice this?

  345. What happens there is

  346. the Spirit comes upon the people,

  347. people who are standing by

  348. and think,

  349. well,

  350. what's happening?

  351. You know,

  352. it's like fire coming from heaven.

  353. And what happens?

  354. You know,

  355. does it say,

  356. and they started to sing hymns louder?

  357. Or they started to wave their hands?

  358. Or they started to jig around?

  359. You know,

  360. no.

  361. What it says is

  362. they began to speak about

  363. the amazing things

  364. that God had done.

  365. And even more amazingly,

  366. the Spirit inspired them

  367. to be able to speak out

  368. those things

  369. in a way that the people

  370. who are in the crowd

  371. could understand them.

  372. You're sitting there,

  373. saying,

  374. well,

  375. that's a novel idea,

  376. you know,

  377. never went to church

  378. thinking I might understand

  379. the sermon,

  380. you know,

  381. and you had to kind of endure it,

  382. but no,

  383. the Word was spoken

  384. in a way

  385. that people of every

  386. different tongue

  387. who were gathered there

  388. could understand

  389. exactly

  390. what was being said.

  391. And finally,

  392. in 1 Peter 3.15,

  393. where

  394. Peter says,

  395. look,

  396. look,

  397. look,

  398. always be ready.

  399. Always be ready

  400. to give a reason

  401. for the hope

  402. that is in you.

  403. I mean,

  404. don't put your hands up,

  405. but you know,

  406. would you say you're ready

  407. to give a reason?

  408. And I want to speak to you

  409. about this verbal witness

  410. because I think

  411. it can be such a game changer

  412. in the lives of others.

  413. Although,

  414. I do want to say to you,

  415. this could seriously affect

  416. your comfort zone,

  417. you know,

  418. health warning.

  419. And here are some factors

  420. that I want you to bear in mind.

  421. The first thing is,

  422. specific prayer

  423. in relation to this verbal witness,

  424. I would say,

  425. prepares the ground.

  426. I think it does that

  427. in two ways.

  428. The first way is,

  429. trust me,

  430. if you pray for opportunities

  431. to share your faith,

  432. I can promise you

  433. they will come.

  434. Okay?

  435. If you don't want them,

  436. don't pray them,

  437. but if you pray them,

  438. pray for opportunities.

  439. They will come your way.

  440. The second way it does this is,

  441. I think,

  442. I mentioned this in church

  443. some months ago now,

  444. but anybody remember

  445. prayer triplets?

  446. You know,

  447. I think we called it

  448. Operation Andrew

  449. or something like that,

  450. and three people

  451. would meet together,

  452. and each of them

  453. would bring three names

  454. of people who didn't know Christ,

  455. and they would sit together,

  456. and they would pray

  457. about those people,

  458. and,

  459. I mean,

  460. in my prayer triplet,

  461. and,

  462. you know,

  463. we were,

  464. frankly,

  465. a bit haphazard.

  466. I mean,

  467. nearly everybody

  468. we prayed for

  469. intensely in those

  470. prayer triplets

  471. crossed the line

  472. and became a Christian

  473. at some point.

  474. So I think

  475. that part of preparedness

  476. is to be prayed up

  477. for the opportunities

  478. and for the,

  479. to us,

  480. that God might use me

  481. when those opportunities

  482. arise.

  483. Second thing

  484. I want to say to you,

  485. I think you need

  486. to bear in mind,

  487. is check your love dial.

  488. What I mean by that is,

  489. I don't think you should

  490. plunge into

  491. verbal witness

  492. if you're a kind of

  493. spiritual scalp hunter.

  494. You know,

  495. if it's more about you

  496. than it is about

  497. seeking to bring

  498. the good news

  499. to the people

  500. that you speak with,

  501. I'm not sure

  502. how helpful that is.

  503. It's not about winning,

  504. it's not about

  505. making people

  506. feel judged.

  507. But verbal witness

  508. should be an expression

  509. of God's love

  510. for the world,

  511. as far as I can best see.

  512. Third thing is,

  513. if you wait

  514. until you're ready

  515. to give a verbal witness,

  516. you'll wait.

  517. I think it comes to a point

  518. when you've just got to

  519. plunge in there

  520. and say something.

  521. Fifth thing is,

  522. have you met Christians

  523. Christians who,

  524. frankly,

  525. are desperate

  526. to kind of promote

  527. Jesus and his kingdom,

  528. but actually

  529. have the net impact

  530. of putting people

  531. off massively?

  532. You ever met people

  533. like,

  534. am I the only person

  535. who meets people

  536. like Ryan?

  537. I mean,

  538. very often they've got

  539. a Bible the size

  540. of a paving slab

  541. and they'll go around

  542. beating people

  543. around the head

  544. with it until,

  545. you know,

  546. people just give in

  547. to get rid of you.

  548. And I think there is

  549. a kind of sensitivity

  550. that's kind of required here,

  551. but, you know,

  552. that needs to be put

  553. alongside a kind of boldness

  554. as well.

  555. I would say this,

  556. I found this really helpful

  557. when I was a young Christian.

  558. I did this thing.

  559. Anybody heard

  560. of Evangelism Explosion?

  561. Well,

  562. you're going to be horrified

  563. by it, right,

  564. before I explain it,

  565. just let me say.

  566. Evangelism Explosion

  567. was a process evangelism course

  568. that was put together

  569. in a church in Florida

  570. by a man called James Kennedy.

  571. Basically,

  572. it was a door-to-door

  573. visitation program.

  574. I can see you,

  575. you know,

  576. scared already.

  577. And what you did was

  578. you learned

  579. a kind of skeleton

  580. of the gospel.

  581. And the idea was

  582. you knocked on the door,

  583. somebody answered it,

  584. and you would,

  585. you know,

  586. you were instructed

  587. that you needed to do,

  588. you know,

  589. English people do this,

  590. don't we?

  591. You know,

  592. there's a kind of intro

  593. that we go through

  594. in,

  595. I just want to say

  596. this phrase very carefully,

  597. social intercourse.

  598. There's something,

  599. you know,

  600. we go through,

  601. we talk about the weather

  602. or we say,

  603. you know,

  604. all that stuff.

  605. So the course encouraged

  606. you to kind of do

  607. a bit of that stuff.

  608. And then it had

  609. a diagnostic question.

  610. And at the right moment,

  611. you're supposed to feed in

  612. this diagnostic question.

  613. And the,

  614. it's a very good question,

  615. this actually.

  616. I mean,

  617. you might,

  618. don't,

  619. you know,

  620. mind it to room it.

  621. But the diagnostic question was,

  622. if you were to die tonight

  623. and God were to say to you,

  624. why would I let you

  625. into heaven?

  626. What would you say?

  627. Some people would say

  628. stuff like,

  629. can you come back

  630. after EastEnders

  631. is finished?

  632. interesting.

  633. But a lot of people

  634. would be like,

  635. oh,

  636. well,

  637. you know,

  638. I'm not perfect,

  639. you know,

  640. not religious,

  641. but,

  642. you know,

  643. I try my best

  644. given to kind of,

  645. you know,

  646. a comic aid

  647. or all that stuff.

  648. But it was all,

  649. the idea was

  650. that 99% of people,

  651. scarily 99%

  652. of church people,

  653. place the emphasis

  654. on their effort

  655. to save themselves

  656. rather than

  657. the intervention

  658. of God in Jesus Christ

  659. who came

  660. that we might do

  661. for ourselves,

  662. sorry,

  663. he might do for us

  664. what we could not do

  665. for ourselves

  666. and that is

  667. save ourselves.

  668. So having,

  669. you know,

  670. asked that question,

  671. given that 99%

  672. of people

  673. gave the wrong answer,

  674. it kind of gave you

  675. a way in

  676. to talk about

  677. the gospel.

  678. Do you know what?

  679. I know you're sitting

  680. there horrified

  681. by the very idea

  682. of it and,

  683. you know,

  684. I get that in a way.

  685. Actually,

  686. I find that a really

  687. helpful thing.

  688. I found it really

  689. helpful to learn

  690. a skeleton of the gospel

  691. with some Bible verses

  692. so it's not just

  693. me talking,

  694. it's, you know,

  695. what scripture says

  696. about this,

  697. that and the other

  698. and I found that

  699. really helpful

  700. and then I found

  701. something else

  702. really helpful

  703. and that was

  704. I went to a,

  705. I think they call it

  706. a clinic,

  707. you know,

  708. it's never a great

  709. thing is it to call

  710. something a clinic

  711. because it implies

  712. you're not well

  713. before you get there

  714. but the clinic

  715. basically said

  716. you need to be able

  717. to give a thumbnail

  718. sketch of your

  719. Christian story

  720. and you need to be able

  721. to do that

  722. within two minutes

  723. and,

  724. you know,

  725. I think that is

  726. another really

  727. helpful thing

  728. to do.

  729. You know,

  730. if somebody says

  731. to you,

  732. you know,

  733. why are you a Christian?

  734. What would you say?

  735. And,

  736. you know,

  737. if you need,

  738. you know,

  739. two and a half hours

  740. to drone on

  741. to explain it to people,

  742. they're probably going

  743. to lose the will

  744. to live by the time

  745. you finish

  746. trying to explain

  747. it to them.

  748. But the important

  749. thing about trying

  750. to set a limited

  751. time

  752. around your testimony

  753. is this,

  754. it helps you

  755. to focus on

  756. what is the real

  757. change in my life

  758. as a result

  759. of my discipleship

  760. in Jesus Christ?

  761. What is the thing

  762. that God has really

  763. changed in me?

  764. I think it's

  765. really important

  766. and can I just say

  767. that?

  768. Can we agree

  769. that it's really

  770. not helpful

  771. to kind of give

  772. our testimony

  773. and it's founded

  774. on sort of

  775. what I will politely

  776. call simplistic

  777. nonsense?

  778. You know,

  779. I'm not saying

  780. that God doesn't

  781. care where you

  782. park your car,

  783. but the kind of

  784. testimony,

  785. you know,

  786. that goes like this,

  787. I couldn't find

  788. a parking space,

  789. you know,

  790. I needed to get

  791. out of the car

  792. because my

  793. four-year-old

  794. was desperate

  795. for the bathroom

  796. and,

  797. you know,

  798. God opened up

  799. a car.

  800. Let me tell you,

  801. people are not

  802. massively impressed

  803. by that kind

  804. of thing.

  805. What they're much

  806. more impressed

  807. about is

  808. when there was

  809. a season of

  810. adversity in

  811. your life,

  812. how did God

  813. help you deal

  814. with it?

  815. You know,

  816. maybe you went

  817. through bereavement

  818. or maybe you've

  819. been through

  820. divorce,

  821. maybe you've

  822. lost somebody

  823. really close

  824. to you,

  825. maybe you've,

  826. I mean,

  827. maybe you've had

  828. none of those

  829. old things and

  830. for crying out

  831. loud,

  832. don't make

  833. stuff up.

  834. But actually,

  835. I think it's

  836. far more

  837. impactful.

  838. If you've got

  839. something to

  840. share about

  841. the way God

  842. helped you

  843. through adversity,

  844. then it is

  845. talking about

  846. God providing

  847. you with a

  848. parking place.

  849. Focus on

  850. what has

  851. changed in

  852. your life

  853. as a result

  854. of your

  855. faith.

  856. The seventh

  857. thing is,

  858. and I'm glad

  859. to say this

  860. to churches

  861. together in

  862. Clevedon,

  863. though clearly

  864. this is a

  865. ramification for

  866. local congregations,

  867. if together

  868. we covenant

  869. to seize the

  870. opportunity to

  871. share our

  872. faith.

  873. I think that's

  874. a really good

  875. thing to do.

  876. And the reason

  877. I think that

  878. is that it

  879. kind of builds

  880. in a level

  881. of accountability.

  882. If we've got

  883. stories to share

  884. about when we

  885. tried it,

  886. that's a very

  887. powerful thing.

  888. Some of you

  889. will know

  890. Pip and Jay

  891. Church in

  892. Bristol was

  893. one of those

  894. churches that

  895. went through

  896. the very first

  897. wave,

  898. of renewal.

  899. And it's

  900. amazing back

  901. in the day,

  902. you know,

  903. I saw

  904. when old

  905. Malcolm

  906. Whittacombe

  907. was the

  908. rector there,

  909. you know,

  910. he stood up

  911. there with

  912. his big

  913. pork chop,

  914. sideboards,

  915. you know,

  916. holding forth

  917. from the

  918. pulpit.

  919. And in turn,

  920. it's a massive

  921. church,

  922. probably twice

  923. the size of

  924. this church,

  925. standing room

  926. only.

  927. And,

  928. you know,

  929. he did his

  930. thing there,

  931. and they

  932. covenanted

  933. together as

  934. a church

  935. to be people

  936. who would

  937. seize the

  938. opportunity,

  939. if and when

  940. it arose,

  941. to share

  942. their testimony.

  943. The impact

  944. was truly

  945. staggering,

  946. and what they

  947. used to do

  948. in the services,

  949. I don't know

  950. if they still

  951. do,

  952. it was,

  953. they would

  954. leave a

  955. short time

  956. for people

  957. to come and

  958. tell their

  959. stories as to

  960. when they'd

  961. spoken about

  962. their faith

  963. in the week,

  964. and the

  965. outcome of

  966. speaking about

  967. their faith.

  968. And very

  969. often,

  970. no,

  971. not very

  972. often,

  973. occasionally,

  974. they would

  975. bring a

  976. person to

  977. the front

  978. with them

  979. to share

  980. their

  981. experience,

  982. which is

  983. the person

  984. who they

  985. shared the

  986. faith with,

  987. who come

  988. to church

  989. for the

  990. first time,

  991. maybe ever,

  992. maybe for

  993. years,

  994. maybe not

  995. for years.

  996. The full

  997. thing is,

  998. I need to

  999. say this to

  1000. those of you

  1001. who are

  1002. living on

  1003. yesterday's

  1004. spiritual

  1005. experience.

  1006. You know,

  1007. if you look

  1008. in Isaiah

  1009. 64 and

  1010. verse 6,

  1011. the prophet

  1012. there writes

  1013. about those

  1014. whose spiritual

  1015. experience fades

  1016. like the leaves

  1017. in autumn.

  1018. I mean,

  1019. I think it's

  1020. much better if

  1021. your spiritual

  1022. experience is

  1023. fresh and you

  1024. try and maintain

  1025. it in a fresh

  1026. way.

  1027. rather than,

  1028. you know,

  1029. people say

  1030. to you,

  1031. you know,

  1032. what's the

  1033. most significant

  1034. moment in

  1035. your life?

  1036. I mean,

  1037. clearly your

  1038. conversion,

  1039. if it was a

  1040. long time ago,

  1041. is a very

  1042. significant

  1043. moment.

  1044. But if,

  1045. you know,

  1046. you're talking

  1047. about the

  1048. conference you

  1049. went to in

  1050. 1957,

  1051. you know,

  1052. probably people

  1053. in today's

  1054. world are not

  1055. going to kind

  1056. of quite

  1057. resonate with

  1058. the lack of

  1059. contemporaneity

  1060. around that.

  1061. So,

  1062. I want to

  1063. leave some

  1064. time for

  1065. questions.

  1066. But here are,

  1067. are you ready

  1068. for this?

  1069. Buckle up.

  1070. Ten things.

  1071. Practical tips.

  1072. One,

  1073. I don't need to

  1074. say.

  1075. Pray and pray

  1076. for people who

  1077. are not

  1078. Christians,

  1079. who you in

  1080. your heart would

  1081. love to see

  1082. across the line.

  1083. Second thing is,

  1084. you might need to

  1085. start with a

  1086. spiritual order.

  1087. Where are you?

  1088. Are you hot

  1089. for God or

  1090. are you lukewarm

  1091. for God?

  1092. You know,

  1093. is your experience

  1094. like that which

  1095. Isaiah spoke

  1096. about?

  1097. Is it fading

  1098. like the autumn

  1099. leaves?

  1100. I mean,

  1101. you can't,

  1102. you know,

  1103. I know where

  1104. people are

  1105. moved and all

  1106. that stuff,

  1107. but generally,

  1108. generally,

  1109. would you say

  1110. you're hot for

  1111. God or would

  1112. you say,

  1113. yeah,

  1114. you know,

  1115. maybe not.

  1116. Third thing is,

  1117. you need to

  1118. build authentic

  1119. relationships.

  1120. I never

  1121. forgot,

  1122. when I went

  1123. to the church

  1124. where I was

  1125. a rector,

  1126. there were a

  1127. lot of

  1128. people in

  1129. middle age

  1130. there,

  1131. nothing wrong

  1132. with that,

  1133. you know,

  1134. I am one,

  1135. but one of

  1136. the things

  1137. that,

  1138. you know,

  1139. I taught

  1140. them about

  1141. sharing their

  1142. faith and

  1143. taught them

  1144. about evangelism

  1145. and they come

  1146. to me and say,

  1147. you know what,

  1148. we don't really

  1149. have any friends

  1150. outside of the

  1151. church these

  1152. days.

  1153. I'm like,

  1154. seriously,

  1155. you know,

  1156. I was quietly

  1157. thinking,

  1158. are you that

  1159. sad?

  1160. And,

  1161. no,

  1162. we don't.

  1163. I've never

  1164. forgotten this.

  1165. In fact,

  1166. we had that

  1167. man from

  1168. Florida come

  1169. to Slough

  1170. when I was

  1171. a cure at

  1172. there,

  1173. James Kennedy,

  1174. and the

  1175. Salvation Army

  1176. guy,

  1177. he'd been going

  1178. on about

  1179. evangelism

  1180. explosion,

  1181. the Salvation

  1182. Army guy

  1183. was there,

  1184. lovely guy,

  1185. said to him,

  1186. well,

  1187. the problem

  1188. for me and

  1189. for my

  1190. congregation is

  1191. such a kind

  1192. of big social

  1193. thing as well

  1194. as a kind

  1195. of spiritual

  1196. thing that

  1197. most of us

  1198. only have

  1199. socialized within

  1200. our immediate

  1201. circle.

  1202. So he said

  1203. to James

  1204. Kennedy,

  1205. do you have

  1206. any advice?

  1207. Right,

  1208. don't follow

  1209. this.

  1210. I think he

  1211. was joking.

  1212. He said,

  1213. yeah,

  1214. why don't you

  1215. go down to

  1216. the nudist

  1217. beach?

  1218. And we're

  1219. all kind

  1220. of having

  1221. an attack

  1222. of the

  1223. vapors,

  1224. you know,

  1225. who are

  1226. going?

  1227. Look,

  1228. some of

  1229. you,

  1230. you know,

  1231. I know

  1232. some of

  1233. you,

  1234. I know

  1235. some of

  1236. you are

  1237. in roles

  1238. that put

  1239. you in

  1240. touch

  1241. with people

  1242. who are

  1243. going through

  1244. difficult

  1245. times in

  1246. their lives,

  1247. people who

  1248. don't know

  1249. Christ.

  1250. I think

  1251. that

  1252. you know,

  1253. the important

  1254. thing is that

  1255. we build

  1256. authentic

  1257. relationships,

  1258. not just

  1259. relationships

  1260. that solely

  1261. we're making

  1262. to try and

  1263. exploit them

  1264. in some

  1265. way,

  1266. but relationships

  1267. that,

  1268. you know,

  1269. are truly

  1270. reflecting the

  1271. love of God

  1272. for the

  1273. person that

  1274. we've been

  1275. praying for.

  1276. I've said

  1277. it'll help

  1278. if you can

  1279. find a way

  1280. of expressing

  1281. your allegiance

  1282. to Jesus

  1283. Christ,

  1284. which isn't

  1285. particularly

  1286. off-putting.

  1287. I think

  1288. that's really

  1289. important.

  1290. Five,

  1291. be attentive

  1292. to the

  1293. Spirit.

  1294. As I've

  1295. got older,

  1296. I was going

  1297. to say as

  1298. I've become

  1299. more mature

  1300. in the faith,

  1301. but that

  1302. would be

  1303. stretching a

  1304. point.

  1305. But as I've

  1306. got older,

  1307. one of the

  1308. things that

  1309. I've noticed

  1310. is that

  1311. whereas in

  1312. the early

  1313. days of my

  1314. walk with

  1315. Jesus,

  1316. my life

  1317. with him

  1318. was confined

  1319. to kind of

  1320. 20 minutes

  1321. in the

  1322. morning and

  1323. a kind

  1324. of sign

  1325. off prayer

  1326. before I

  1327. crashed out

  1328. of bed

  1329. in the

  1330. evening.

  1331. But the

  1332. longer I've

  1333. been a

  1334. Christian,

  1335. the more

  1336. I feel

  1337. like,

  1338. if this

  1339. doesn't

  1340. sound too

  1341. fanciful,

  1342. that Jesus

  1343. is kind

  1344. of with

  1345. me wherever

  1346. I go and

  1347. whatever I

  1348. do.

  1349. I mean,

  1350. sometimes that's

  1351. great because

  1352. it starts me

  1353. sinning.

  1354. What's great

  1355. is I think

  1356. sometimes the

  1357. Holy Spirit can

  1358. give you those

  1359. notches to

  1360. speak to

  1361. someone and

  1362. see where it

  1363. goes.

  1364. I think,

  1365. again, I

  1366. told the

  1367. congregation

  1368. here this.

  1369. I have a

  1370. question that

  1371. I ask people

  1372. that really

  1373. catches them.

  1374. You know,

  1375. it's a bit

  1376. like if you,

  1377. sorry to use

  1378. sporting analogy,

  1379. but it's a bit

  1380. like if you're

  1381. playing cricket

  1382. and suddenly

  1383. out of the

  1384. blue the

  1385. bowler boils

  1386. a bouncer

  1387. or your

  1388. head.

  1389. It takes

  1390. you by

  1391. surprise.

  1392. And so my

  1393. question is

  1394. slightly designed

  1395. to do that

  1396. and it's

  1397. very simple.

  1398. It is,

  1399. you know,

  1400. I talk to

  1401. people a bit,

  1402. you know,

  1403. on a train,

  1404. where are you

  1405. going?

  1406. Going to

  1407. Paddington

  1408. Station,

  1409. yeah,

  1410. what are you

  1411. doing down

  1412. there?

  1413. You know,

  1414. all that.

  1415. And I'll

  1416. say,

  1417. so,

  1418. how's your

  1419. life?

  1420. And the

  1421. first thing

  1422. people tell

  1423. you is,

  1424. it's fine,

  1425. it's all

  1426. alright.

  1427. And then it

  1428. starts to

  1429. unravel.

  1430. Actually,

  1431. I'm going

  1432. through a

  1433. really difficult

  1434. divorce at

  1435. the moment.

  1436. Actually,

  1437. my husband

  1438. left me 20

  1439. years ago

  1440. when I was

  1441. four months

  1442. pregnant with

  1443. our fourth

  1444. child.

  1445. Actually,

  1446. I'm feeling

  1447. horrible malice

  1448. towards my

  1449. sister.

  1450. I've even

  1451. had somebody

  1452. say this to

  1453. me,

  1454. and I'd

  1455. like to

  1456. kill her.

  1457. it is

  1458. amazing.

  1459. It is

  1460. amazing.

  1461. A number of

  1462. times people

  1463. have said to

  1464. me,

  1465. I don't

  1466. think anybody

  1467. who knows

  1468. me would

  1469. probably say

  1470. that pastoral

  1471. care was top

  1472. of my gift

  1473. list,

  1474. honestly.

  1475. But the

  1476. number of

  1477. people who

  1478. just through

  1479. Chan's

  1480. conversation

  1481. said to

  1482. me,

  1483. you know

  1484. what,

  1485. I've never

  1486. told anybody

  1487. this before.

  1488. And even

  1489. in that,

  1490. there must

  1491. be some

  1492. kind of

  1493. release,

  1494. isn't there?

  1495. Galatians 5,

  1496. well we say

  1497. a burden

  1498. shared is a

  1499. burden

  1500. harved.

  1501. It's a

  1502. sort of

  1503. slight

  1504. distortion

  1505. of a

  1506. verse in

  1507. Galatians 5

  1508. where Paul

  1509. says,

  1510. you know,

  1511. share one

  1512. another's

  1513. burdens and

  1514. so fulfill

  1515. the law of

  1516. Christ.

  1517. And you

  1518. could do

  1519. that.

  1520. You know,

  1521. and I

  1522. mean what

  1523. you've got to

  1524. get through

  1525. is that,

  1526. you know,

  1527. as Dr.

  1528. House said,

  1529. those of you

  1530. who watched

  1531. that sing

  1532. on,

  1533. Netflix

  1534. or whatever,

  1535. everybody

  1536. lies.

  1537. So when you

  1538. ask people

  1539. about their

  1540. life,

  1541. they're going

  1542. to probably

  1543. lie to you

  1544. to start

  1545. with about

  1546. how good

  1547. it is.

  1548. But actually,

  1549. they keep

  1550. talking,

  1551. they probably

  1552. start to

  1553. unravel.

  1554. The sixth

  1555. thing is,

  1556. keep the

  1557. good news

  1558. fresh.

  1559. I've talked

  1560. about that.

  1561. The seventh

  1562. thing is,

  1563. what a

  1564. witness does

  1565. is they

  1566. share their

  1567. experience.

  1568. and again,

  1569. you know,

  1570. I would

  1571. think,

  1572. you know,

  1573. call me

  1574. novel,

  1575. but I

  1576. would think

  1577. that if

  1578. you've got

  1579. no experience,

  1580. it's probably

  1581. going to be

  1582. difficult for

  1583. you to share

  1584. it.

  1585. What is your

  1586. experience of

  1587. God?

  1588. Do you know

  1589. about him

  1590. or do you

  1591. know him?

  1592. I think

  1593. it really

  1594. helps,

  1595. you know,

  1596. I mean,

  1597. I'm always

  1598. amazed,

  1599. to be honest

  1600. with you,

  1601. you know,

  1602. I don't

  1603. know if

  1604. I'm kind

  1605. of low

  1606. level

  1607. Asperger's

  1608. or something

  1609. like that,

  1610. but,

  1611. you know,

  1612. I tend

  1613. to give

  1614. honest answers

  1615. to honest

  1616. questions.

  1617. It used

  1618. to drive

  1619. my press

  1620. officer

  1621. bonkers.

  1622. You know,

  1623. I remember

  1624. him saying

  1625. to me,

  1626. a very

  1627. sophisticated

  1628. man,

  1629. my press

  1630. officer,

  1631. he wrote

  1632. the world's

  1633. leading

  1634. treatise on

  1635. being a

  1636. butler.

  1637. Right?

  1638. Terribly

  1639. formal,

  1640. very straight.

  1641. He'd been

  1642. a press

  1643. officer to

  1644. William and

  1645. Harry when

  1646. they went

  1647. through Eton.

  1648. And he

  1649. used to say

  1650. to me,

  1651. do you know

  1652. what the

  1653. trouble with

  1654. you is,

  1655. Mike?

  1656. You know,

  1657. when people

  1658. say that to

  1659. you,

  1660. like,

  1661. where's this

  1662. conversation

  1663. going to

  1664. go?

  1665. I said,

  1666. no,

  1667. but I think

  1668. you're going

  1669. to tell me.

  1670. He said,

  1671. the trouble

  1672. with you is

  1673. people ask

  1674. you a

  1675. straight

  1676. question,

  1677. you're in

  1678. grave danger

  1679. of giving

  1680. them a

  1681. straight answer.

  1682. I'm like,

  1683. so what's

  1684. the problem

  1685. with that?

  1686. It's like,

  1687. the press

  1688. will kill

  1689. you.

  1690. Well,

  1691. I'm still

  1692. alive.

  1693. Look,

  1694. sharing our

  1695. experience

  1696. and the

  1697. way,

  1698. you know,

  1699. I was going

  1700. to say

  1701. to say

  1702. that,

  1703. I'm

  1704. always

  1705. amazed

  1706. how many

  1707. people,

  1708. I wouldn't

  1709. surprise me,

  1710. Russ,

  1711. if people

  1712. didn't come

  1713. and say

  1714. that to

  1715. you this

  1716. morning after

  1717. that sermon.

  1718. People are

  1719. shocked by

  1720. ministers being

  1721. honest.

  1722. They're just

  1723. shocked by it.

  1724. They're like,

  1725. really?

  1726. You know,

  1727. you suffer

  1728. from that?

  1729. Yeah,

  1730. I do.

  1731. I don't

  1732. know if it's a

  1733. sense of let

  1734. down.

  1735. I can't

  1736. really understand

  1737. it.

  1738. I mean,

  1739. partly because

  1740. I've been a

  1741. minister for

  1742. so long now,

  1743. I can't

  1744. really remember

  1745. not being

  1746. one.

  1747. It just

  1748. shocks me

  1749. that people

  1750. would be

  1751. shocked.

  1752. It's like,

  1753. you know,

  1754. when you're

  1755. looking for

  1756. a minister,

  1757. are you

  1758. really looking

  1759. for a

  1760. liar?

  1761. It just

  1762. seems mad

  1763. when you say

  1764. it like that,

  1765. doesn't it?

  1766. So,

  1767. sharing,

  1768. the eighth

  1769. thing is

  1770. sensitive

  1771. persistence.

  1772. How many

  1773. of you have

  1774. asked and

  1775. bucked up

  1776. the courage

  1777. and asked

  1778. a friend,

  1779. come to our

  1780. guest service,

  1781. come,

  1782. and they've

  1783. made some

  1784. feeble excuse

  1785. and you've

  1786. thought,

  1787. oh,

  1788. that's it.

  1789. No.

  1790. You've got to

  1791. keep going.

  1792. You know,

  1793. there's a

  1794. man,

  1795. it wouldn't

  1796. be right

  1797. for me to

  1798. share his

  1799. name,

  1800. he's a

  1801. multi,

  1802. balty,

  1803. squillion,

  1804. billion,

  1805. billionaire,

  1806. made an

  1807. absolute fortune,

  1808. he's on the

  1809. radio fairly

  1810. frequently,

  1811. not because

  1812. he's been

  1813. sexually abusing

  1814. or racially

  1815. abusing

  1816. anybody,

  1817. but because

  1818. he has

  1819. standards that

  1820. he applies

  1821. to his

  1822. business and

  1823. the rest of

  1824. the business

  1825. world just

  1826. don't get it.

  1827. For instance,

  1828. he will not

  1829. have any of

  1830. his employees,

  1831. he's in

  1832. retail,

  1833. partly,

  1834. he will not

  1835. have any of

  1836. his employees

  1837. work on a

  1838. Sunday.

  1839. So they're

  1840. very interested

  1841. in him in

  1842. the media,

  1843. you know,

  1844. how does

  1845. your business

  1846. plan work

  1847. without Sunday

  1848. trading?

  1849. It's like,

  1850. works very

  1851. well,

  1852. thank you.

  1853. Why,

  1854. you know,

  1855. because God

  1856. blesses us

  1857. because we,

  1858. you know,

  1859. we're trying

  1860. to live by

  1861. the way he

  1862. wants us

  1863. to live.

  1864. And,

  1865. but,

  1866. I remember

  1867. for years

  1868. and years

  1869. and years

  1870. I used to

  1871. phone him

  1872. up when

  1873. we had,

  1874. I'm trying

  1875. to remember

  1876. how often

  1877. men,

  1878. there were

  1879. men's

  1880. breakfasts

  1881. in those

  1882. days,

  1883. I apologize

  1884. to the

  1885. women in

  1886. the house

  1887. for that,

  1888. but that's

  1889. the way

  1890. they were

  1891. back in

  1892. the day.

  1893. I can't

  1894. remember

  1895. how often

  1896. we had,

  1897. but a number

  1898. of times

  1899. I got on

  1900. the phone

  1901. to this

  1902. guy and

  1903. said,

  1904. would you

  1905. come?

  1906. He always

  1907. made some

  1908. feeble excuse,

  1909. never came,

  1910. but I kept

  1911. making the

  1912. calls,

  1913. and in

  1914. the end

  1915. he said,

  1916. yes,

  1917. when Barry

  1918. Kissel

  1919. from

  1920. St.

  1921. Andrew's

  1922. Chorleywood

  1923. was our

  1924. speaker,

  1925. soundly

  1926. converted

  1927. at 9.47

  1928. in the

  1929. morning,

  1930. he's given

  1931. millions

  1932. of his

  1933. wealth

  1934. away to

  1935. churches,

  1936. charities,

  1937. whatever.

  1938. And I'm

  1939. not taking

  1940. any credit

  1941. for that,

  1942. it's purely

  1943. the work

  1944. of God

  1945. and the

  1946. power of

  1947. his Holy

  1948. Spirit

  1949. revealing

  1950. himself to

  1951. my friend,

  1952. but I

  1953. sometimes

  1954. wonder,

  1955. if I'd

  1956. given up

  1957. phoning him,

  1958. because you

  1959. know what,

  1960. it just gets

  1961. embarrassing,

  1962. but if I'd

  1963. given it up,

  1964. I'm not saying

  1965. he wouldn't

  1966. have become

  1967. a Christian,

  1968. it must

  1969. have been

  1970. somewhere in

  1971. God's plan,

  1972. but I'm

  1973. just telling

  1974. you,

  1975. don't be,

  1976. you know,

  1977. somebody says

  1978. no once,

  1979. keep rattling

  1980. that cage,

  1981. keep rattling

  1982. it.

  1983. The only thing

  1984. is,

  1985. as Peter

  1986. would tell

  1987. us,

  1988. always be

  1989. ready.

  1990. You know,

  1991. have some

  1992. idea of

  1993. what you

  1994. would say.

  1995. You know,

  1996. when I was

  1997. in local

  1998. church ministry,

  1999. we did a

  2000. bit of research

  2001. with our

  2002. members,

  2003. and we

  2004. said to

  2005. them,

  2006. suppose

  2007. somebody

  2008. came to

  2009. you,

  2010. and said,

  2011. Harry,

  2012. Mary,

  2013. I've been

  2014. thinking about

  2015. this Christian

  2016. thing,

  2017. and I

  2018. just want to

  2019. say to you

  2020. that I would

  2021. love to become

  2022. a Christian,

  2023. but I don't

  2024. know how to

  2025. do it,

  2026. what should I

  2027. do?

  2028. I just

  2029. think,

  2030. you know,

  2031. suppose you're

  2032. that person,

  2033. somebody's come

  2034. to you,

  2035. entirely positive

  2036. about the

  2037. Christian faith,

  2038. wants to say,

  2039. what would you

  2040. say?

  2041. Well,

  2042. what we

  2043. discovered was

  2044. that over

  2045. 90% of our

  2046. congregation said,

  2047. go and see

  2048. Mike.

  2049. I mean,

  2050. can you imagine

  2051. the bottleneck

  2052. that would

  2053. occur if you

  2054. just left it

  2055. to ministers

  2056. all the time?

  2057. You know,

  2058. I always say

  2059. as an evangelist,

  2060. my job's made

  2061. a lot easier

  2062. when you get

  2063. that what Jesus

  2064. has called you

  2065. to,

  2066. whether you're

  2067. an introvert

  2068. or an extrovert,

  2069. no excuses,

  2070. Jesus said

  2071. just before

  2072. he went to

  2073. heaven,

  2074. you will

  2075. be my

  2076. witnesses.

  2077. Didn't say

  2078. a few,

  2079. a few

  2080. you keen

  2081. ones,

  2082. you know,

  2083. might like

  2084. to step

  2085. up now

  2086. and then.

  2087. No,

  2088. you,

  2089. plural.

  2090. And as

  2091. an evangelist,

  2092. if you take

  2093. that responsibility

  2094. seriously,

  2095. I'm not saying

  2096. my job as an

  2097. evangelist

  2098. becomes easier,

  2099. but I am

  2100. going to say

  2101. do,

  2102. I think

  2103. it's better

  2104. than it was

  2105. if I'm doing

  2106. it against,

  2107. you know,

  2108. a church

  2109. which behaves

  2110. like the

  2111. silent minority.

  2112. And by the

  2113. way,

  2114. if you behave

  2115. like the

  2116. silent minority,

  2117. trust me,

  2118. you will remain

  2119. the silent

  2120. minority.

  2121. And the

  2122. last thing

  2123. is,

  2124. borrowing it

  2125. from a story

  2126. in Matthew's

  2127. gospel,

  2128. comes a point

  2129. where friends,

  2130. you've just

  2131. got to get

  2132. out of the

  2133. boat.

  2134. You've got to

  2135. have a go.

  2136. You're thinking

  2137. to yourself,

  2138. what if I

  2139. mess it up?

  2140. What if you

  2141. do?

  2142. You know,

  2143. have you ever

  2144. messed up

  2145. anything else?

  2146. I'm sure

  2147. that we

  2148. can all

  2149. have good

  2150. examples of

  2151. conversations

  2152. that we've

  2153. initiated which

  2154. really haven't

  2155. gone well.

  2156. I mean,

  2157. I could write

  2158. a book about

  2159. the conversations

  2160. I've initiated

  2161. that haven't

  2162. gone well.

  2163. my wife

  2164. was with

  2165. me one

  2166. day,

  2167. she just

  2168. stopped me

  2169. in time.

  2170. I was

  2171. talking to

  2172. this bloke

  2173. and I

  2174. didn't really

  2175. recognize him,

  2176. I thought he

  2177. was vaguely

  2178. familiar,

  2179. I was talking

  2180. away and

  2181. he had his

  2182. little one

  2183. year old

  2184. child in

  2185. his arm and

  2186. I was talking

  2187. to him thinking,

  2188. do I know

  2189. you?

  2190. I don't,

  2191. I know you,

  2192. I know you.

  2193. Just about to

  2194. say to him,

  2195. has Christopher

  2196. been baptized?

  2197. When Anthea

  2198. whispered in my

  2199. ear,

  2200. you're his

  2201. godfather.

  2202. Out of the

  2203. mouths of

  2204. babes and

  2205. idiots.

  2206. Look,

  2207. 2 Kings 7

  2208. I think

  2209. puts very

  2210. well in

  2211. that wonderful

  2212. verse,

  2213. the kernel

  2214. of what I'm

  2215. saying to you.

  2216. Look,

  2217. either this

  2218. thing that's

  2219. changed and

  2220. changing my

  2221. life and

  2222. hopefully

  2223. changed and

  2224. changing your

  2225. life,

  2226. is the best

  2227. news that we

  2228. could share

  2229. with another

  2230. human being.

  2231. Because if it's

  2232. not, we have

  2233. every right to

  2234. keep still about

  2235. it.

  2236. It's not a

  2237. message about

  2238. the church,

  2239. it's a message

  2240. about the

  2241. redeeming power

  2242. of God

  2243. shown to us

  2244. in Jesus

  2245. Christ on

  2246. the cross

  2247. of Calvary.

  2248. Bearing

  2249. shame and

  2250. scoffing rude,

  2251. in my place

  2252. condemned he

  2253. stood,

  2254. sealed my

  2255. pardon with

  2256. his blood.

  2257. Alleluia.

  2258. What a

  2259. savior.

  2260. fear.
