  1. I'm fascinated by this little man, Zacchaeus.

  2. And I'm fascinated because Zacchaeus never knew about the cross,

  3. didn't know about salvation,

  4. never read any of Paul's epistles,

  5. partly because they'd never been written.

  6. I mean, that would have been tricky, agreed.

  7. But something dramatically changed in him.

  8. And you can bet, I mean, I know you're not gambling people,

  9. but you can bet your bottom dollar

  10. that when a tax man says he's going to give all the money back,

  11. he's ripped people off, something's changed.

  12. I have a friend who lives in the U.S.

  13. who was the legal correspondent of the Chicago Tribune

  14. and an intellectual atheist.

  15. By intellectual, he wouldn't claim to be intellectual,

  16. but he was the kind of person, because he was a legal correspondent,

  17. who could marshal an argument that would put in jeopardy

  18. the idea that God even existed,

  19. never mind that he was interested in the lives of ordinary human beings.

  20. And then something in Lee's mind went wrong,

  21. and his wife was converted to the Christian faith.

  22. He said that he noticed such a difference in her

  23. after she was converted

  24. that he couldn't help but go back over the ground

  25. that had led him to the point where he had decided

  26. that there was no God,

  27. that there was no such thing as a religious thought.

  28. It was all kind of socially constructed mumbo-jumbo.

  29. The way his wife was

  30. left him with a question in his head.

  31. The question was,

  32. is there more to this

  33. than meets the eye?

  34. Listen, if you've been here since four o'clock,

  35. you've heard me droning on

  36. about a spoken witness.

  37. And I said at the beginning of that,

  38. it was my kind of exclusion clause,

  39. that of course I believe that the words we use

  40. when we're given opportunity

  41. and sensitively in the power of the Spirit

  42. to try and influence others for Christ

  43. are opportunities that we should seize.

  44. But I also said,

  45. it's not just about the words.

  46. It's about the life as well that's lived.

  47. We don't know a huge amount about Zacchaeus.

  48. But we do know three things about him.

  49. The first thing is,

  50. we know he was little.

  51. He was short.

  52. That's the reason why,

  53. in a kind of ridiculously comic way,

  54. he had to climb up into a tree

  55. just to get a sight of Jesus.

  56. The second thing we know about Zacchaeus

  57. was he was loathed.

  58. Nobody liked him.

  59. And there was a reason for this.

  60. I mean, you know,

  61. I'll be careful how I say this.

  62. I mean,

  63. I make jokes on the expensive,

  64. you know,

  65. last time I did it,

  66. I made jokes at the expense of tax collectors.

  67. It turns out there's somebody

  68. from Majesty's Revenue and Customs

  69. sitting on the front row

  70. and didn't play out that well.

  71. This is...

  72. Look, you know,

  73. let's just say

  74. that probably they're not

  75. top of everybody's Christmas card list.

  76. But of course,

  77. with Zacchaeus,

  78. there was this added

  79. kind of issue.

  80. And that was,

  81. he didn't just collect taxes

  82. on behalf of the Roman occupying troops.

  83. And they were extremely extortionate taxes.

  84. But he also put 10% in his own back pocket.

  85. And of course,

  86. because he was a Jew,

  87. he was considered to be a traitor

  88. amongst his own people.

  89. You only have to read your newspaper,

  90. sadly,

  91. a bit too often

  92. to see

  93. how people can construct hatred

  94. in their hearts

  95. and their minds

  96. towards people

  97. who they regard as traitors.

  98. At least to violence

  99. and to,

  100. you know,

  101. frenzied activity

  102. on social media,

  103. all that stuff.

  104. Of course,

  105. Zacchaeus didn't have to put up

  106. with Twitter.

  107. But what he had to put up with

  108. is a load of people

  109. who didn't like him.

  110. That's why it was

  111. that when Jesus invited him

  112. around for tea,

  113. sorry,

  114. when Jesus invited himself

  115. around for tea,

  116. it says,

  117. the crowd muttered.

  118. You know what?

  119. I have to say this

  120. to you, church,

  121. but the people of God

  122. have been quite good

  123. at muttering

  124. for a long time now.

  125. Zacchaeus

  126. was very unpopular.

  127. He was little.

  128. He was loathed.

  129. And the third thing we know,

  130. because of his

  131. deceptive habits,

  132. he was also loaded.

  133. As Harry Enfield would put it,

  134. he had loads of money.

  135. But there must have been

  136. something about him

  137. that felt a little incomplete,

  138. maybe a little unfulfilled.

  139. Maybe he'd heard some news

  140. about Jesus,

  141. but whatever it was,

  142. something made him want

  143. to put his eyes

  144. on this man.

  145. So he climbs into a tree.

  146. I mean,

  147. it's pretty comic,

  148. isn't it?

  149. Funny little guy

  150. up in a tree

  151. trying to see Jesus.

  152. And Jesus is walking along,

  153. and it says he looked up.

  154. And in the

  155. Greek New Testament,

  156. when it says Jesus looked up,

  157. the verb is very interesting.

  158. What it means is

  159. that Jesus fixed Zacchaeus

  160. in his stare.

  161. And something happened.

  162. We don't quite know

  163. what happened,

  164. but what we do know is

  165. that as a result

  166. of whatever went on

  167. in that exchange,

  168. this man's life

  169. was changed.

  170. I like to think

  171. that maybe

  172. this little,

  173. loathed,

  174. and loaded

  175. human being,

  176. for the first time

  177. in his life,

  178. felt the grace of God

  179. in the face

  180. of Jesus Christ.

  181. And something changed.

  182. Let me say this

  183. very clearly to you,

  184. friends.

  185. I said it earlier,

  186. but it's worth repeating.

  187. You will never

  188. take up your responsibility

  189. to be a witness

  190. for Jesus,

  191. either with your lips

  192. or with your lives,

  193. until you have been warmed

  194. by the grace of God.

  195. Friend,

  196. if that's not happened

  197. to you thus far,

  198. if you're going to church,

  199. has just been a matter

  200. of sitting on,

  201. I mean,

  202. not every church

  203. has business class seats

  204. like this.

  205. Sitting on hard pews,

  206. thinking that maybe tomorrow

  207. something might happen

  208. for you.

  209. Let me tell you,

  210. I'm praying that something

  211. might happen to you tonight,

  212. that the Holy Spirit

  213. might whisper in your ear,

  214. and the grace of God

  215. might warm your heart

  216. and you might understand

  217. that Jesus Christ

  218. calls all his people

  219. to be witnesses.

  220. And look,

  221. here's the evidence.

  222. Four o'clockers,

  223. forgive me for a moment's repetition,

  224. but I said this afternoon

  225. that you know what,

  226. you can argue

  227. against God.

  228. You can argue

  229. with clergy,

  230. and you know,

  231. my colleagues

  232. have got the stripes

  233. on their back

  234. to evidence that.

  235. You can argue

  236. with bishops.

  237. I've got a filing cabinet

  238. full of letters.

  239. You can argue,

  240. but one of the things

  241. you cannot argue against

  242. is to transform life.

  243. I think that's what

  244. we see in Zacchaeus.

  245. How do we know

  246. his life was changed?

  247. Listen to me.

  248. I can't even work out

  249. the maths.

  250. I think that,

  251. if I understand

  252. the maths correctly

  253. in Zacchaeus' little

  254. restorative equation here,

  255. I think he might have

  256. ended up in debt

  257. at the end of it.

  258. It says here,

  259. here and I give half

  260. of my possession

  261. of the poor,

  262. and if I have cheated

  263. anyone out of anything,

  264. I will pay back

  265. four times the amount.

  266. I mean,

  267. I can't work that out.

  268. I'm sure Zacchaeus

  269. didn't have a figure

  270. in mind when he said it.

  271. Something's happened.

  272. And friends,

  273. if the church

  274. is ever going to be

  275. the witness

  276. that God calls us to be,

  277. something needs to happen.

  278. And what needs to happen

  279. is you need to be

  280. so warmed

  281. by the grace of God

  282. that you almost

  283. cannot stop yourself

  284. from taking those

  285. God-given opportunities

  286. for a word in season,

  287. for taking those

  288. God-given opportunities

  289. to live the life.

  290. I don't think

  291. my friend

  292. Leastro Bell's wife

  293. said anything to him,

  294. but the life she lived

  295. was so different

  296. after her heart

  297. was worn

  298. by the grace of God

  299. that this

  300. hard-bitten atheist

  301. could do no more,

  302. no less

  303. than start to ask

  304. the question,

  305. is there

  306. more than this

  307. than I have

  308. up-to-date

  309. thought?

  310. We'd all be

  311. agreed,

  312. wouldn't we,

  313. that

  314. although

  315. we're constantly

  316. reading in

  317. newspapers

  318. in the Western world

  319. about the

  320. flight away

  321. from the Christian

  322. faith,

  323. you know,

  324. when we did

  325. the national census,

  326. you know,

  327. what it looked like

  328. is that

  329. belief in God

  330. was rescinding.

  331. We can all

  332. read about that

  333. stuff,

  334. but listen to me,

  335. when you read

  336. the papers,

  337. isn't it born

  338. more on your

  339. heart?

  340. My goodness,

  341. we might be

  342. sophisticated,

  343. we might be able

  344. to split atoms,

  345. we might be able

  346. to do this,

  347. we might be able

  348. to do that,

  349. but my goodness,

  350. there's a lot of

  351. need in this world.

  352. You know,

  353. tonight,

  354. probably within

  355. yards of this

  356. church,

  357. or your church,

  358. wherever it is,

  359. there'll be people

  360. who are aching

  361. with loneliness.

  362. There'll be some

  363. people,

  364. we see,

  365. my wife and I

  366. see,

  367. you know,

  368. not infrequently

  369. down the hill,

  370. who clearly have

  371. issues of poverty.

  372. There are people

  373. who are going

  374. through relational

  375. breakdown.

  376. Some of them

  377. might be in the

  378. house tonight.

  379. There are people

  380. who suffer from

  381. depression.

  382. There are people

  383. who are just

  384. in need.

  385. And friends,

  386. if our witness

  387. as a church

  388. is simply to walk

  389. past those who

  390. are in need,

  391. then I think

  392. we will never

  393. be the witnessing

  394. community

  395. that surely

  396. somewhere deep

  397. down inside us,

  398. if we're healthy

  399. disciples,

  400. we would like to

  401. see.

  402. Sitting there

  403. saying,

  404. so,

  405. you know what,

  406. have you got a list

  407. of great suggestions

  408. for us?

  409. Well,

  410. my answer is,

  411. you know,

  412. I could give you

  413. some suggestions,

  414. but what I wanted

  415. to happen for you

  416. tonight

  417. is for you

  418. just to be

  419. honest before

  420. God

  421. and for you

  422. just to be

  423. open to the

  424. Holy Spirit

  425. whispering in

  426. your ear

  427. and telling you

  428. to wake up

  429. and get the

  430. coffee on.

  431. And friend,

  432. if your heart's

  433. cold,

  434. don't give up

  435. at that.

  436. Pray tonight

  437. that the fire

  438. of God

  439. might come

  440. upon you

  441. and warm

  442. your heart

  443. in order

  444. that you

  445. might catch

  446. fire.

  447. I used to

  448. work in

  449. Slough

  450. and we had

  451. a guy in

  452. our congregation

  453. called Ken

  454. and Ken

  455. was a very

  456. committed Christian.

  457. He was,

  458. I'll admit,

  459. a bit rough

  460. and ready

  461. and he was

  462. a bus driver,

  463. he got in

  464. trouble with

  465. the bus

  466. company

  467. because he'd

  468. stop the bus

  469. and try and

  470. preach the

  471. gospel to

  472. people who

  473. wanted to

  474. get to

  475. work.

  476. And,

  477. you know,

  478. you kind of

  479. say of Ken,

  480. he was high

  481. on passion,

  482. probably low

  483. on strategy.

  484. And I remember

  485. one day,

  486. our church,

  487. the little church

  488. got burnt out

  489. twice whilst I

  490. was there.

  491. Local kids

  492. coming in,

  493. you know,

  494. making a pile

  495. of hymn books

  496. and setting fire

  497. to them.

  498. And the second

  499. time we're

  500. all sitting

  501. there in

  502. this kind

  503. of stinking

  504. smoking mess

  505. thinking,

  506. this is great

  507. because the

  508. insurance company

  509. will cough

  510. and we'll

  511. end up with

  512. even better

  513. hymn books

  514. and Bibles.

  515. That kind

  516. of godly

  517. thinking was,

  518. you know,

  519. taking mastery

  520. of the hour.

  521. And Ken,

  522. so I'd be like,

  523. let's have a time

  524. of prayer.

  525. Ken starts

  526. off.

  527. And actually,

  528. it's my prayer

  529. for you.

  530. Why?

  531. Because you're

  532. the church.

  533. Why?

  534. Because each

  535. one of you,

  536. each one of you

  537. could be a

  538. meaning maker

  539. in the life

  540. of another

  541. human being.

  542. Might be

  543. through your

  544. verbal witness.

  545. Might be

  546. through the

  547. way you

  548. live your

  549. life.

  550. It doesn't

  551. really matter

  552. which way.

  553. But what

  554. matters is we

  555. will become

  556. meaning makers.

  557. And friends,

  558. the thing

  559. about the

  560. gospel is,

  561. the thing

  562. about a

  563. verbal witness

  564. is,

  565. people want

  566. to hear

  567. about what's

  568. changed in

  569. your life

  570. as a result

  571. of your

  572. discipleship

  573. in Jesus

  574. Christ.

  575. Christ.

  576. They don't

  577. just want to

  578. hear about

  579. that,

  580. they want

  581. to see

  582. some evidence

  583. of it.

  584. I've got a

  585. friend and

  586. he asks this

  587. deeply painful

  588. question.

  589. He says,

  590. what do you

  591. like when

  592. no one's

  593. looking?

  594. You know,

  595. think about

  596. that.

  597. What do you

  598. like when

  599. you get

  600. behind the

  601. wheel of a

  602. motor car?

  603. My wife's

  604. always offering

  605. me corrective

  606. therapy on

  607. that theme,

  608. you know,

  609. calm down.

  610. Right?

  611. What do you

  612. like when

  613. life takes

  614. a downturn?

  615. Do you

  616. hang on to

  617. Jesus or

  618. do you run

  619. for cover

  620. and get

  621. embittered?

  622. See,

  623. what I love

  624. about Zacchaeus

  625. is,

  626. and I'm

  627. going to

  628. look him

  629. up in

  630. heaven,

  631. what I

  632. love about

  633. him is,

  634. his heart

  635. was warmed

  636. and he

  637. decided

  638. he needed

  639. to do

  640. something

  641. as evidence

  642. that his

  643. heart was

  644. warmed.

  645. And if

  646. God ever

  647. needed his

  648. church to

  649. stand up,

  650. speak up,

  651. and live

  652. up to

  653. the faith

  654. that we

  655. proclaim,

  656. surely it's

  657. such a time

  658. as this.

  659. church.

  660. I remember

  661. preaching

  662. in this

  663. really kind

  664. of

  665. intimidating

  666. church in

  667. Oxford called

  668. St. Mary

  669. the Virgin,

  670. which is the

  671. university

  672. church.

  673. And at the

  674. back of the

  675. church,

  676. there are

  677. these great

  678. wooden

  679. thrones,

  680. which I

  681. was really

  682. hoping were

  683. for the

  684. bishop to

  685. sit in,

  686. but apparently

  687. not.

  688. They're for

  689. the chancellor

  690. of the

  691. university and

  692. the vice

  693. chancellor and

  694. the pro-vice

  695. chancellors.

  696. On, I

  697. think it

  698. was the

  699. 11th of

  700. July,

  701. where's

  702. Russ,

  703. in the

  704. year 1746,

  705. a young

  706. preacher

  707. stepped into

  708. the pulpit.

  709. He

  710. announced

  711. this text

  712. from the

  713. book of

  714. Acts.

  715. It was

  716. the words

  717. of one

  718. of the

  719. governors

  720. who had

  721. just heard

  722. Paul give

  723. an account

  724. of the

  725. gospel.

  726. And this

  727. governor

  728. said,

  729. Sir,

  730. thou

  731. almost

  732. persuadest

  733. me.

  734. That

  735. sermon

  736. we have

  737. in its

  738. entirety

  739. was preached

  740. by John

  741. Wesley,

  742. and it

  743. transpires

  744. that it

  745. was the

  746. last

  747. time that

  748. Wesley,

  749. who of

  750. course was a

  751. respectable

  752. Anglican,

  753. didn't believe

  754. in stuff

  755. like fire,

  756. it was the

  757. last time

  758. that Wesley

  759. preached in

  760. an Oxford

  761. church,

  762. which was

  763. slightly tricky

  764. for somebody

  765. who'd been

  766. chaplain

  767. of an Oxford

  768. college.

  769. His

  770. ministry

  771. went on

  772. to

  773. prosper.

  774. The

  775. sermon

  776. is called

  777. The

  778. Almost

  779. Christian.

  780. Wesley

  781. says the

  782. almost

  783. Christian

  784. goes to

  785. church.

  786. He said

  787. the almost

  788. Christian

  789. may even

  790. pray on

  791. occasions,

  792. usually in

  793. emergencies,

  794. admittedly.

  795. The almost

  796. Christian gives

  797. arms liberally

  798. and is a

  799. pillar of

  800. the community,

  801. but there is

  802. one thing

  803. that the

  804. almost

  805. Christian

  806. lacks.

  807. He's not

  808. in love

  809. with God.

  810. Let me

  811. ask you,

  812. don't shout

  813. out,

  814. could you

  815. say you're

  816. in love

  817. with God

  818. or are you

  819. in love

  820. with a

  821. certain way

  822. of doing

  823. religion?

  824. Or are you

  825. in love

  826. with virtue

  827. signaling,

  828. as they call

  829. it these

  830. days,

  831. trying to

  832. make out

  833. you're a

  834. really cool

  835. person?

  836. Or are you

  837. in love

  838. with God?

  839. Wesley

  840. had been

  841. ordained

  842. for years

  843. before it

  844. said in

  845. the church

  846. in London

  847. that Wesley

  848. who at that

  849. point was

  850. reading the

  851. introduction

  852. to Luther's

  853. commentary on

  854. the epistle

  855. to the

  856. Romans.

  857. I think

  858. we'd agree,

  859. it's not

  860. what you

  861. call a

  862. potboiler,

  863. right?

  864. And as

  865. he read

  866. it,

  867. he said,

  868. my heart

  869. was strangely

  870. warmed

  871. and I

  872. knew

  873. that I

  874. was saved.

  875. Friend,

  876. whoever

  877. you are,

  878. however

  879. old you

  880. are,

  881. however

  882. young

  883. you

  884. are,

  885. however

  886. introverted

  887. you are,

  888. however

  889. extroverted

  890. you are,

  891. you are,

  892. you are a

  893. disciple of

  894. Jesus,

  895. he has a

  896. call on

  897. your life

  898. and it is

  899. to be a

  900. witness,

  901. the witness

  902. of lips

  903. and the

  904. witness of

  905. lives.

  906. And for

  907. some of you,

  908. you've been

  909. doing that for

  910. a while,

  911. God bless you,

  912. God bless you,

  913. you are a

  914. man,

  915. but some of

  916. us need to

  917. wake up,

  918. some of us

  919. need to

  920. understand that

  921. if we're going

  922. to do this,

  923. we need the

  924. fire of God

  925. in our souls.

  926. And do you know

  927. the great thing

  928. is?

  929. The great thing

  930. is we can seek

  931. that anointing,

  932. we can seek

  933. that fire.

  934. Why?

  935. Because God's

  936. not looking for

  937. your ability.

  938. What he's

  939. looking for

  940. is your

  941. availability.

  942. Who tonight

  943. will answer

  944. the call?

  945. Who tonight

  946. will say

  947. yes to God

  948. in a new

  949. way and

  950. find your

  951. heart strangely

  952. warmed?

  953. Who tonight

  954. will go out

  955. from this

  956. place?

  957. You know,

  958. one of the

  959. things,

  960. you know,

  961. I'm not

  962. making a

  963. point here,

  964. those of you

  965. who are

  966. Anglicans,

  967. but,

  968. you know,

  969. at the end

  970. of our

  971. communion

  972. services,

  973. I don't

  974. think it's

  975. just us

  976. that does

  977. this anymore,

  978. but at the

  979. end of it,

  980. do you

  981. remember those

  982. words,

  983. go in

  984. peace to

  985. love and

  986. serve the

  987. Lord?

  988. Words of

  989. expulsion,

  990. words of

  991. propulsion,

  992. that's about

  993. as liturgically

  994. near to get

  995. as any

  996. respectable

  997. Anglican

  998. would get

  999. to saying

  1000. get lost

  1001. and get

  1002. on with

  1003. it.

  1004. I believe

  1005. God's

  1006. calling his

  1007. church,

  1008. and friends,

  1009. his church

  1010. is you,

  1011. and he

  1012. wants to

  1013. anoint you

  1014. for this

  1015. task,

  1016. and he

  1017. wants to

  1018. warm your

  1019. heart,

  1020. that you

  1021. may be so

  1022. filled with

  1023. the good

  1024. news,

  1025. so in

  1026. love with

  1027. God,

  1028. that you

  1029. cannot help

  1030. but speak

  1031. it and

  1032. live it.

  1033. And friends,

  1034. when the

  1035. church wakes

  1036. up,

  1037. when the

  1038. church wakes

  1039. up,

  1040. the world

  1041. will take

  1042. notice.

  1043. We live in

  1044. challenging

  1045. times,

  1046. and in

  1047. challenging

  1048. times,

  1049. God challenges

  1050. his church,

  1051. doesn't rant

  1052. about all the

  1053. ungodly

  1054. people,

  1055. the message

  1056. of the

  1057. Old

  1058. Testament

  1059. prophets

  1060. is,

  1061. when the

  1062. nation

  1063. becomes

  1064. godly,

  1065. God

  1066. looks at

  1067. his

  1068. church,

  1069. you and

  1070. me.

  1071. Let's

  1072. seek the

  1073. heartwarming

  1074. grace of

  1075. God tonight.

  1076. Let's

  1077. allow ourselves

  1078. to be soaked

  1079. in it afresh,

  1080. maybe for the

  1081. first time,

  1082. that we may

  1083. be so in

  1084. love with

  1085. him,

  1086. that the

  1087. evidence

  1088. in our

  1089. lives is

  1090. just hard

  1091. to miss.
