  1. Good morning. For those of you who don't know me, my name is John and I'm married to Lydia,

  2. who was leading us in worship earlier. At the beginning of last summer, I got married to

  3. Lydia, in fact. It was only in June. Our wedding was the most wonderful day of friends and family

  4. coming together to celebrate our marriage. But it wasn't until the following morning when I was

  5. sat at breakfast with my new wife that it dawned on me that life had changed. This was new.

  6. Life was never going to be the same again. And after five solid months of marriage, I can confirm

  7. that life has not been the same. Some of my old bachelor ways of living have, well, been updated.

  8. For example, my ultra-convenient floor drope has been replaced with a wardrobe. Apparently,

  9. you hang things up these days. My life and my rhythms have been changed. They have adapted

  10. to a new way of life. Life is new. And John uses this image of marriage in our passage in Revelation.

  11. He points, he uses it to point towards what the kingdom of God will one day look like when it comes

  12. in all its fullness. The new heaven and the new earth will be like a bride coming down

  13. out of heaven, he says. And it will be new in every possible way. In fact, newness itself will be made new.

  14. It is that revelation I experienced at breakfast that day following my wedding, but on a totally

  15. different level. Humanity will not merely transition from one phase of life to a new phase of life like I did,

  16. from putting clothes on my floor to putting them in a wardrobe. No. What God is doing is something

  17. completely new. He is renewing all things. As God himself declared in our passage, he who is seated on the throne said,

  18. I am making all things new.

  19. And within this new act of creation, there will be no room for suffering or injustice.

  20. No room for pain or violence. And even death itself will be no more.

  21. It is the most awesome and wonderful image anyone could imagine. Full and complete wholeness and peace.

  22. In God's kingdom, when it comes in all its fullness, we can truly say,

  23. this is new. Life will never be the same.

  24. But here's the snag.

  25. If I'm really honest with you,

  26. I just can't imagine that world.

  27. Because I'm unable to fully disconnect my experience of this world from my imagination.

  28. I'm unable to fully disconnect the dysfunction that we see around the world.

  29. The injustice.

  30. The violence war.

  31. So I can't imagine that perfect place where wholeness reigns.

  32. Where peace is fully known and experienced.

  33. I just can't get there in my mind.

  34. The image in Revelation is so beyond our experience of the world today.

  35. From the reports that we read in the newspaper.

  36. From the news we watch on our TV screens.

  37. That it becomes almost distant from our experience.

  38. We think,

  39. how could life ever be like that?

  40. And so that glimpse that we get in Revelation of God's kingdom that is yet to come,

  41. becomes nothing more than a distant future event.

  42. An unattainable reality.

  43. It's, well and truly,

  44. not yet.

  45. And if you're anything like me,

  46. you're tempted to disconnect from that

  47. not yet reality.

  48. Because we cannot see how it connects with us today.

  49. Perhaps,

  50. all we think is,

  51. well,

  52. we can hope against hope that

  53. maybe one miraculous day,

  54. by some

  55. great and wonderful God event,

  56. God's new peaceful kingdom

  57. will somehow become

  58. my reality too.

  59. The thing is,

  60. the Bible tells us that

  61. that miraculous day,

  62. that great and wonderful God event

  63. has already happened.

  64. You see,

  65. through the violence

  66. inflicted on the one

  67. who came to bring peace

  68. to the world,

  69. through his

  70. crucifixion

  71. and resurrection,

  72. Jesus has already

  73. changed everything.

  74. Jesus' death

  75. and resurrection

  76. has secured

  77. that whole

  78. and peaceful kingdom

  79. described in Revelation.

  80. It is 100%

  81. guaranteed

  82. for all

  83. who pledge their allegiance

  84. to Christ.

  85. That will be

  86. your inheritance.

  87. and isn't that

  88. a wonderful

  89. and comforting thought

  90. for us all,

  91. particularly

  92. on a day

  93. like today

  94. when we remember

  95. those

  96. who gave their lives

  97. to secure

  98. and protect

  99. their country.

  100. But

  101. there's

  102. more.

  103. Jesus has not

  104. only secured

  105. that not yet

  106. inheritance

  107. for us,

  108. but because of

  109. his death

  110. and resurrection,

  111. God's

  112. not yet

  113. kingdom

  114. has broken

  115. into the

  116. here

  117. and now.

  118. God's

  119. not yet

  120. kingdom

  121. is

  122. now.

  123. God's

  124. complete

  125. and total

  126. renewing

  127. work

  128. has begun

  129. in the world.

  130. Behind the scenes,

  131. God is

  132. bringing

  133. all things

  134. together.

  135. He is

  136. starting

  137. to put

  138. all things

  139. right.

  140. His kingdom

  141. is being

  142. built

  143. even in

  144. this sad

  145. and dysfunctional

  146. world

  147. in which we live in.

  148. And one day

  149. he will

  150. complete that

  151. task

  152. and it

  153. will be

  154. that picture

  155. that we read

  156. in Revelation

  157. this morning.

  158. It will be

  159. like that.

  160. That will

  161. be our

  162. reality.

  163. So in other words,

  164. we can say

  165. God's

  166. kingdom

  167. is now

  168. but not

  169. yet.

  170. It has

  171. come but

  172. not in

  173. all of

  174. its

  175. fullness.

  176. But for

  177. God's

  178. new

  179. not yet

  180. kingdom

  181. to come

  182. to be,

  183. there's only

  184. one person

  185. we can trust

  186. with the

  187. task of

  188. making it

  189. happen

  190. because let's

  191. be honest,

  192. if you or I

  193. get involved,

  194. it's going

  195. to go

  196. bad

  197. pretty

  198. quick.

  199. And that's

  200. Jesus,

  201. right?

  202. Only he

  203. has the

  204. ability to

  205. make it

  206. what it

  207. needs to

  208. be.

  209. Humanity,

  210. we have

  211. literally

  212. zero chance

  213. of creating

  214. the world

  215. that peaceful

  216. kingdom

  217. that we've

  218. heard described

  219. in Revelation.

  220. But here's

  221. where it

  222. gets exciting.

  223. Almost

  224. unbelievably,

  225. God

  226. invites us

  227. to join

  228. in with

  229. him

  230. in building

  231. that

  232. peaceful

  233. whole

  234. kingdom.

  235. He invites

  236. us

  237. as we

  238. are.

  239. God

  240. has chosen

  241. his church,

  242. God has

  243. chosen his

  244. people

  245. to be

  246. his kingdom

  247. representatives,

  248. to be his

  249. kingdom

  250. ambassadors,

  251. if you

  252. like.

  253. And as

  254. representatives,

  255. he calls

  256. us to

  257. live out

  258. his kingdom,

  259. to live

  260. his way,

  261. as the

  262. strapline of

  263. the college

  264. that I studied

  265. at says,

  266. to live like

  267. the kingdom

  268. is near.

  269. So the

  270. question this

  271. morning for

  272. all of us

  273. is are we

  274. willing to

  275. play our

  276. part,

  277. to join

  278. in with

  279. what God

  280. is doing

  281. in his

  282. great

  283. kingdom

  284. project.

  285. A couple

  286. of weeks

  287. ago,

  288. I was in

  289. Uganda,

  290. and I

  291. had the

  292. privilege of

  293. spending 72

  294. hours in

  295. Morobi

  296. refugee camp.

  297. It was an

  298. incredibly

  299. difficult and

  300. challenging

  301. 72 hours,

  302. and I

  303. could tell

  304. you many

  305. stories of

  306. what life

  307. is like

  308. there.

  309. Uganda is

  310. home to

  311. over 1

  312. million

  313. South Sudanese

  314. refugees,

  315. and there

  316. are 2.5

  317. million

  318. South Sudanese

  319. refugees in

  320. the world.

  321. Alex and

  322. Harriet are

  323. two pastors

  324. who were

  325. in South

  326. Sudan,

  327. and they

  328. fled to

  329. Uganda.

  330. And this

  331. is their

  332. story.

  333. We've got a

  334. short video.

  335. It was

  336. July 9,

  337. 2016,

  338. when the

  339. war started

  340. in South

  341. Sudan.

  342. It was

  343. Sunday.

  344. We saw

  345. the vehicle

  346. carrying

  347. soldiers.

  348. We had

  349. gun shoot

  350. all over

  351. the place.

  352. bullets were

  353. running

  354. over the

  355. roof,

  356. and I

  357. remember

  358. one of

  359. it even

  360. hit the

  361. water tank

  362. and water

  363. was flowing

  364. off.

  365. There was

  366. no time.

  367. We had to

  368. leave the

  369. church and

  370. go to

  371. somebody's

  372. house.

  373. We had

  374. to hide

  375. ourselves

  376. under beds

  377. until the

  378. rebels.

  379. They came

  380. and told us,

  381. we are giving

  382. you only 30

  383. minutes to

  384. leave this

  385. place.

  386. Every

  387. people

  388. within the

  389. town

  390. left all

  391. their

  392. properties.

  393. They had

  394. to run

  395. for their

  396. life because

  397. on that

  398. very day,

  399. very many

  400. people were

  401. killed within

  402. the town

  403. and you can

  404. see dead

  405. body everywhere.

  406. When we

  407. were brought

  408. here, we

  409. were dumped

  410. in the

  411. bushes and

  412. there were

  413. very many

  414. people here

  415. in the

  416. camp living

  417. under the

  418. trees.

  419. So everybody

  420. was traumatized,

  421. including even

  422. the children.

  423. They were

  424. asking,

  425. Mama, we

  426. need to go

  427. home because

  428. they were

  429. under trees.

  430. They were

  431. seeing that

  432. they were

  433. not in

  434. their houses.

  435. But we

  436. could not

  437. forget our

  438. members in

  439. church.

  440. I called

  441. all the

  442. pastors coming

  443. together to

  444. sit down because

  445. people were

  446. traumatized.

  447. Then we

  448. decided to

  449. plant the

  450. churches very

  451. quickly so

  452. that we can

  453. encourage people

  454. with the

  455. word of God.

  456. So we

  457. started

  458. fellowshipping

  459. under trees,

  460. encouraging

  461. them, give

  462. them a word

  463. of comfort

  464. and support

  465. and encouragement.

  466. We have

  467. seen that it

  468. is very much

  469. important to

  470. talk to our

  471. community about

  472. reconciliation,

  473. like we are

  474. coming from

  475. different

  476. backgrounds.

  477. So we bring

  478. them together

  479. and tell them

  480. let us

  481. reconcile and

  482. let there be

  483. peace among

  484. us.

  485. So we

  486. encourage them

  487. to live

  488. peacefully in

  489. a place where

  490. we are.

  491. Then we

  492. started gathering

  493. the youth

  494. together to

  495. take outreach

  496. to them

  497. through sports.

  498. Then we

  499. formed two

  500. clubs in the

  501. refugee camp

  502. bringing all

  503. youth together

  504. who are

  505. traumatized.

  506. Also they

  507. have no work

  508. to do in the

  509. camp and they

  510. were involved

  511. in criminal

  512. activities.

  513. so we

  514. brought them

  515. together

  516. through sports

  517. and preaching

  518. to them.

  519. That's how we

  520. can reach

  521. them.

  522. Peace is

  523. coming and

  524. my plan is

  525. that when we

  526. go back I

  527. will reestablish

  528. all the churches

  529. which were

  530. destroyed.

  531. men.

  532. This morning I

  533. have chosen to

  534. wear a white

  535. poppy alongside

  536. my red

  537. poppy.

  538. Alongside

  539. remembering

  540. those brave

  541. men and

  542. women who

  543. lost their

  544. lives in

  545. service of

  546. this country

  547. I wanted

  548. to remember

  549. those who

  550. are still

  551. at war.

  552. the family

  553. and friends

  554. of Alex

  555. and Harriet

  556. who lost

  557. their lives

  558. in South

  559. Sudan.

  560. And the

  561. white poppy

  562. is a symbol

  563. of remembering

  564. all who have

  565. lost their

  566. lives in

  567. war.

  568. Both

  569. service

  570. personnel

  571. and civilians

  572. across all

  573. wars

  574. throughout the

  575. whole of

  576. human history.

  577. But the

  578. white poppy

  579. is also

  580. a symbol

  581. of peace.

  582. A hope

  583. for peace

  584. that peace

  585. may one day

  586. be known

  587. here on

  588. earth.

  589. And Alex

  590. and Harriet

  591. are doing

  592. exactly that.

  593. They are

  594. peacemakers

  595. in that

  596. community

  597. which has

  598. been ravaged

  599. by war.

  600. people

  601. and what

  602. they didn't

  603. tell you

  604. in that

  605. video

  606. is that

  607. Harriet

  608. is actually

  609. a Ugandan

  610. national.

  611. She

  612. could

  613. with Alex

  614. move

  615. and stay

  616. with family

  617. in Jinja

  618. or in

  619. Kampala

  620. and have

  621. a much

  622. more

  623. comfortable

  624. life.

  625. But

  626. they don't.

  627. they choose

  628. to live

  629. in the

  630. refugee camp.

  631. They choose

  632. to remain

  633. with their

  634. people

  635. because they

  636. long to

  637. be God's

  638. good news.

  639. They long

  640. to be

  641. God's

  642. kingdom

  643. peacemakers

  644. in that

  645. place.

  646. You see

  647. when

  648. we are

  649. all

  650. invited

  651. to join

  652. in

  653. and

  654. when we

  655. do

  656. join

  657. in

  658. with

  659. God

  660. when

  661. we

  662. pray

  663. when

  664. we

  665. seek

  666. his

  667. kingdom

  668. to be

  669. made

  670. known

  671. here

  672. on

  673. earth

  674. it's

  675. like

  676. this

  677. we are

  678. standing

  679. with

  680. one

  681. foot

  682. in

  683. this

  684. sad

  685. and

  686. dysfunctional

  687. world

  688. but

  689. with

  690. the

  691. other

  692. foot

  693. we are

  694. stood

  695. in

  696. God's

  697. not

  698. yet

  699. perfect

  700. peaceful

  701. kingdom

  702. and we

  703. bring the

  704. latter

  705. to bear

  706. on this

  707. broken

  708. and hurting

  709. world

  710. perhaps we

  711. cannot all

  712. be Alex

  713. and Harriet's

  714. and nor

  715. is God

  716. asking us

  717. to be

  718. them

  719. but he

  720. is asking

  721. all of

  722. us

  723. to come

  724. and join

  725. in

  726. with what

  727. he is

  728. doing

  729. in the

  730. world

  731. to come

  732. and join

  733. in

  734. with bringing

  735. peace

  736. bringing

  737. hope

  738. bringing

  739. wholeness

  740. to our

  741. families

  742. to our

  743. communities

  744. and so

  745. this is the

  746. real challenge

  747. this morning

  748. where is

  749. God

  750. asking you

  751. to be

  752. a peacemaker

  753. where is

  754. God

  755. asking you

  756. to bring

  757. wholeness

  762. his kingdom

  763. known

  764. in the

  818. his kingdom

  819. come

  820. on earth

  821. so stay

  822. connected

  823. to him

  824. because he

  825. does not

  826. leave us

  827. to do it

  828. alone

  829. he gives

  830. us the

  831. strength

  832. to stand

  833. when we

  834. don't think

  835. we can

  836. stand
