  1. My name's Andy and those of you who I haven't met before, hello.

  2. I am together with Jay and Lydia, one of three trainee vicars

  3. who are placed with a Christchurch here for this year.

  4. I'm the one that you won't have met before, so hello.

  5. We arrived, Lucy and Gideon and I, in Bristol in August of last year.

  6. It was a bit of a rush getting here.

  7. We'd found out quite late that we'd been accepted to come and train at Trinity

  8. and we had to organise lots of things.

  9. We had to let out our flat.

  10. We had to find a place to live here.

  11. We needed to, you know, arrange for moving and so on.

  12. And so by the time we got here, it felt like a rush getting into the course.

  13. And then, you know, a new course like that, it's a new way of life,

  14. a new routine to learn, new knowledge to pick up, new friends to meet.

  15. And so it was busy.

  16. And then we got sick.

  17. All three of us managed to get sick in the first half term.

  18. And then the deadlines mounted up.

  19. And with one thing and another, we went through the entire year

  20. and I didn't feel like I had a chance to take a breath.

  21. And it was June.

  22. It was June by the time I felt like I had a little bit of time

  23. and a little bit of space to consider the really huge step that I'd made in my life

  24. by agreeing to train to be a vicar.

  25. And do you know what flooded into my life, flooded into my heart and my mind

  26. on that day when I stopped in a church and thought?

  27. It was fear.

  28. It was absolute blind terror.

  29. Because, you know, I had a good life.

  30. I had a good job.

  31. We had a nice flat in a nice, exciting part of London.

  32. We went to a great church.

  33. We were members of a great church.

  34. Who wants more than to be a member of a great church?

  35. But there I was considering giving up all of that for something really uncertain.

  36. You know, becoming a vicar.

  37. Becoming a vicar means, Clive will tell you, poor salary.

  38. Fewer choices than you get as an independent person following your own career.

  39. And also the Church of England is great at times, but sometimes can be a bit funny.

  40. And also being a vicar, Clive really does his best to...

  41. But it's not cool being a vicar, really.

  42. And I realized that I'm somebody for whom it's far, far, far too important

  43. to look cool, to look good, to be impressive.

  44. So there were lots of genuine reasons why I might be afraid,

  45. but I came to realize that most of those were not to do with the C of E.

  46. They were to do with me.

  47. They were inside of me.

  48. So when Clive offered me the chance to preach,

  49. and there was the chance to preach on this passage,

  50. on this topic,

  51. when you love God but you don't love his church,

  52. then I was like, that's for me.

  53. That's a topic I can speak on.

  54. So the book that we've been working through in the series,

  55. The Christian Atheist by Craig Rochelle,

  56. this chapter is all about people that he comes across in his life

  57. who are really committed Christians, love God,

  58. but for whatever reason haven't found a commitment to the church,

  59. haven't found a way into the church family.

  60. And he talks about all the reasons that they give for that,

  61. but he also talks about just how important it is

  62. to overcome those barriers and to become part of the church,

  63. and that's what we're going to talk about today.

  64. Craig Rochelle mentions a number of reasons

  65. why people don't commit to church,

  66. and I can relate to a lot of them.

  67. How about you?

  68. He talks about people who've been hurt in the past,

  69. who've had a bad experience,

  70. and that that puts them off committing.

  71. People who don't feel that they've got anything to offer,

  72. who don't feel confident,

  73. who feel like they'd rather play it safe

  74. and not commit and not be part of it.

  75. And people who just don't feel they can find the right church,

  76. the right one that suits them.

  77. I can relate to every single one of those reasons,

  78. and those reasons hold me back

  79. from something that could be a real blessing in my life.

  80. The passage we're going to look at today

  81. is one of the few times that Jesus mentions the church directly.

  82. Jesus had been ministering for a few years by this point.

  83. He'd received some praise and some acclaim,

  84. but he'd also experienced some opposition.

  85. And he just heard at this point some really bad news.

  86. His cousin, John the Baptist, had lost his life

  87. because of his following the call on his life.

  88. So Jesus, knowing what was ahead for him

  89. and needing to process this news,

  90. he took the disciples off to a solitary place,

  91. a place where they could be away from the crowds,

  92. where they could talk and have some time.

  93. It was quite an amazing time for the disciples.

  94. They saw Jesus feed 5,000 people.

  95. They saw Jesus walk on water.

  96. They saw Jesus transfigured before their eyes

  97. into, you know, white clothes and shiningness.

  98. And Jesus also talked to them about some tough stuff.

  99. He told them that he was going to go on to Jerusalem

  100. and he was going to lose his life there.

  101. And he wanted really to make sure

  102. that they knew who he was as well.

  103. So he talked to them about who he was.

  104. So in the passage we've just heard,

  105. Jesus says,

  106. So who do people say that I am?

  107. Who do people say the Son of Man is?

  108. By which he meant this person in front of you, me.

  109. And they said,

  110. Oh yes, some say Elijah,

  111. some say the prophets,

  112. some say John the Baptist.

  113. But then he turns the focus on them

  114. and he says to them,

  115. What about you?

  116. What about you?

  117. Who do you say I am?

  118. And then at that moment,

  119. it's Peter's big moment.

  120. Peter stands up and he says,

  121. Oh, I think I've got the right answer.

  122. It's like that Sunday school moment

  123. or that school moment, isn't it?

  124. I think I've got the right answer.

  125. It's inside me.

  126. It's coming up.

  127. I can feel it.

  128. I think it's the right answer.

  129. I'm going to say it.

  130. I'm going to say it.

  131. I'm going to say it.

  132. You're the Messiah.

  133. You're the Son of God.

  134. I can really relate to Peter in that moment.

  135. That kind of,

  136. he'd seen Jesus ministering.

  137. He'd seen a lot of stuff.

  138. And he felt like it was adding up for him.

  139. He knew what it was all about.

  140. There was something in Jesus that was different,

  141. that was important,

  142. that was special,

  143. something of God.

  144. And in that moment,

  145. when Jesus asked that question,

  146. he thought,

  147. I'm going to say it.

  148. I don't care if I look foolish.

  149. I'm going to say it.

  150. And that was a moment that changed everything for Peter.

  151. Jesus says to him,

  152. Blessed are you,

  153. Simon,

  154. son of Jonah,

  155. because this has not been revealed to you

  156. by flesh and blood,

  157. but by my Father in heaven.

  158. He says that Peter,

  159. Simon Peter,

  160. is blessed

  161. because he's heard from God.

  162. And that's a blessing.

  163. And because he's had the courage

  164. to follow up on what he's heard

  165. and follow it with his life.

  166. And because he's right,

  167. because he's got the right answer.

  168. He's onto the source of life.

  169. And Jesus goes on to say,

  170. and I tell you that you are Peter.

  171. So often,

  172. this disciple's called Simon Peter

  173. because Jesus is giving him a new name.

  174. Jesus says,

  175. you are Peter,

  176. and on this rock,

  177. I will build my church.

  178. This was a humble guy,

  179. a bumbling guy.

  180. He came from,

  181. he was a fisherman.

  182. And he came from a backward part of Israel.

  183. And he was a guy

  184. who got stuff wrong all the time.

  185. He was keen,

  186. but he got the wrong end of the stick.

  187. He failed.

  188. He did silly things.

  189. And he was going to continue

  190. to be all of those things.

  191. But actually,

  192. in this moment,

  193. Jesus is saying,

  194. I see beyond that.

  195. I see something else beyond that.

  196. I see strength in you.

  197. I see faithfulness in you.

  198. I see something in you

  199. that a church can be built on.

  200. And it's really significant

  201. that he gives Peter

  202. this new name,

  203. Peter,

  204. because of course,

  205. Peter is a play on words of rock.

  206. So I'm going to build

  207. on this rock,

  208. my church.

  209. But just the mere idea

  210. of changing a name

  211. is significant in the Bible.

  212. Names in the Bible

  213. are never coincidental.

  214. They're never random.

  215. They've always got a deep meaning.

  216. And there were two other famous people

  217. in the history of God's people

  218. whose name was changed.

  219. Abraham.

  220. His name was changed

  221. from Abraham to Abraham.

  222. Jacob's name was changed

  223. to Israel.

  224. And in both cases,

  225. God wanted to say something

  226. through that change.

  227. He wanted to say

  228. something about their character,

  229. but also something about

  230. the role that they were going to play.

  231. In all of those,

  232. in those two people,

  233. God was going to build

  234. a new people of God.

  235. They were going to be

  236. the foundation stones

  237. for a new people,

  238. a new family,

  239. a new people group.

  240. And it was the same for Peter.

  241. Abraham and Jacob

  242. had incredible encounters

  243. with God.

  244. But not everybody

  245. was going to have

  246. that kind of encounter.

  247. So God created through them

  248. a people

  249. who could show the world

  250. what God was like.

  251. And that's what he's doing

  252. with Peter as well.

  253. Peter was able to walk

  254. face to face

  255. with Jesus

  256. in the years

  257. that Jesus was on this planet

  258. ministering.

  259. How few people

  260. get that opportunity.

  261. And so God creates

  262. through Peter

  263. a people group

  264. that can show

  265. God to the world.

  266. It takes a people

  267. to change the world.

  268. God knows

  269. what he's doing.

  270. That's always been

  271. his way of doing it.

  272. And it's his way

  273. of doing it now.

  274. The church

  275. that was described

  276. in Acts,

  277. in Acts 2

  278. and in Acts 4

  279. the church

  280. that just erupted

  281. in Jerusalem.

  282. It turned Jerusalem

  283. upside down.

  284. And some of that

  285. was through

  286. amazing preaching

  287. because Peter

  288. became this amazing preacher

  289. and the others did too.

  290. But as much as that

  291. it was about

  292. the lives

  293. that they lived

  294. and people witnessing

  295. their lives

  296. and going

  297. wow

  298. there's something

  299. different there.

  300. There's something

  301. important there.

  302. There's something

  303. life changing there.

  304. There's something

  305. of God

  306. in these people

  307. and I want to know more.

  308. It's great to be

  309. welcoming Joy

  310. and Edie

  311. into the church

  312. family today.

  313. And it's exciting

  314. to think

  315. about Donna

  316. and Dave

  317. and those two guys.

  318. You know

  319. what is their family

  320. going to become?

  321. And who

  322. you know

  323. what will people

  324. that witness

  325. their family

  326. see in them?

  327. Will they see God?

  328. I'm sure that they will

  329. and it's exciting.

  330. I was

  331. I stare

  332. share a study

  333. at my college

  334. with a guy called

  335. Ben who's amazing.

  336. I'm totally

  337. in awe of Ben.

  338. He and his

  339. wife Sarah

  340. have got six kids

  341. under the age

  342. of ten.

  343. Six kids.

  344. And

  345. I had lunch

  346. with the

  347. on a Friday

  348. they often bring

  349. their six kids in

  350. and I had lunch

  351. with them

  352. all of them

  353. on one big table.

  354. It was amazing.

  355. They're lovely kids.

  356. And I was just

  357. talking to Sarah

  358. and she was saying

  359. God uses their family

  360. so much

  361. to do his work.

  362. They just invite people

  363. to come and be part

  364. of their family

  365. and those people

  366. see something

  367. in that family

  368. that they've not

  369. experienced elsewhere.

  370. Earlier this year

  371. an eleven year old

  372. girl who was

  373. their neighbour

  374. gave her life

  375. to Jesus.

  376. She doesn't have

  377. a church family.

  378. She's got no

  379. background in church

  380. but she was just

  381. around their house

  382. all the time

  383. and she saw

  384. in them

  385. something amazing

  386. and she gave

  387. her life to Jesus.

  388. I'm sure

  389. you could tell

  390. stories like that

  391. of your family

  392. or your friends

  393. of your church.

  394. I could tell you

  395. a story.

  396. In my church

  397. in King's Cross

  398. every year

  399. we do a social

  400. outreach project

  401. in a deprived

  402. estate near us

  403. and we do

  404. improvement works

  405. in the estate

  406. we do social

  407. activities

  408. and sometimes

  409. we decorate

  410. people's houses

  411. and there was

  412. one guy

  413. a couple of

  414. years ago

  415. who had

  416. just so profound

  417. needs

  418. such multiple

  419. needs

  420. his name

  421. was Joseph

  422. and when we

  423. went round

  424. to his house

  425. they'd ask

  426. could we help

  427. to decorate

  428. his house

  429. and it was

  430. phenomenal

  431. to see the

  432. state that he

  433. was living in

  434. I couldn't

  435. believe it

  436. it was dirty

  437. it was untidy

  438. it was dilapidated

  439. and so we went

  440. in there

  441. and we decorated

  442. and we did

  443. a great job

  444. we cleaned it

  445. and cleaned it

  446. and we redecorated

  447. and it looked

  448. great at the end

  449. but much more

  450. profound than

  451. the decoration

  452. of his flat

  453. was the experience

  454. that Joseph had

  455. in those days

  456. as I say

  457. he's an elderly

  458. guy with really

  459. profound needs

  460. and he was

  461. very lonely

  462. it says in the

  463. bible that

  464. God puts the

  465. lonely in families

  466. and for those

  467. days

  468. we had to get

  469. him out of his

  470. flat because we

  471. were decorating it

  472. and so we just

  473. surrounded him

  474. with people who

  475. looked after him

  476. and loved him

  477. and it affected

  478. him profoundly

  479. we stayed in

  480. touch with him

  481. sadly a few

  482. months later he

  483. died but do you

  484. know what I know

  485. that those days

  486. and the months

  487. afterwards were an

  488. experience of heaven

  489. for him because he

  490. had been he'd

  491. experienced love

  492. he'd experienced

  493. God in meeting us

  494. I know you can tell

  495. stories just like

  496. that that's why the

  497. church exists

  498. because it takes a

  499. people it takes a

  500. family it takes a

  501. group to change

  502. the world it takes

  503. a group to show

  504. God and that's the

  505. invitation that is

  506. ours this morning

  507. God is God has

  508. always worked through

  509. a group of people

  510. he needs a group of

  511. people to show the

  512. world himself and

  513. his invitation to you

  514. and his invitation to

  515. me is do you want to

  516. be part of that do you

  517. want to be part of

  518. something like that and

  519. I don't know about you

  520. but my answer is yes

  521. but then my courage

  522. fails it took courage

  523. for Peter to respond

  524. in that moment that

  525. we've been talking

  526. about I know who

  527. Jesus is I know it's

  528. inside of me I can see

  529. it but it would have

  530. been terrifying to have

  531. said that thing that he

  532. had to say in front of

  533. everybody and it would

  534. have been terrifying for

  535. him to have followed

  536. the call that was on his

  537. life from that day on

  538. he followed Jesus to

  539. Jerusalem watched him

  540. executed his friends and

  541. families scattered he

  542. went on to speak in

  543. front of thousands of

  544. people in Jerusalem he

  545. spoke in front of

  546. authorities that were

  547. trying to put him

  548. behind bars they

  549. succeeded in putting him

  550. behind bars he

  551. eventually died in Rome

  552. because of his faith

  553. he's martyred in Rome

  554. they say that he was

  555. crucified upside down

  556. right because he didn't

  557. want to be crucified the

  558. way that Jesus had been

  559. so huge huge consequences

  560. from follow that call

  561. but I don't think he

  562. would have chosen anything

  563. different you know he's

  564. he was part of founding a

  565. movement that literally

  566. billions and billions and

  567. billions of people have

  568. signed up to since then I

  569. don't think he'd choose

  570. anything different as for

  571. me I feel God is calling

  572. me to consider this thing

  573. about vicaring it's just a

  574. from it's that's the

  575. particular type of calling

  576. that he seems to be

  577. talking to me about and my

  578. courage fails I'm terrified

  579. but I'm determined to

  580. follow the call somehow

  581. anyway Lucy and I my wife

  582. we're talking about this

  583. fear what is this fear that

  584. you've got in you Andy where

  585. does it come from why is that

  586. holding you back how can we

  587. change that and I'm hopeful

  588. that we'll manage but I

  589. wanted to ask you what about

  590. you what's the step that

  591. you feel God is asking of

  592. you what's the commitment to

  593. his church or to him in your

  594. life that he's asking of you

  595. today

  596. you

  597. me

  598. yeah
