  1. I get a great passage, as always.

  2. I get a passage that's the third part of an actual whole passage,

  3. which Russ started for us last week,

  4. and the middle bit which we skipped,

  5. although it is a very important bit of this entire passage.

  6. So I want you to think, this is our passage,

  7. but I want you to think a little bit back to what Russ said,

  8. where Russ told us about the hope of salvation we have in Jesus.

  9. That one day we will see the promises of Isaiah 40 fulfilled,

  10. and its outworkings as written by John in Revelation 21,

  11. come to pass, fully done, finished, no more tears, no injustice, no pain.

  12. Old order of things has passed away, the new has come.

  13. You know, that was what Russ told us last week.

  14. We heard that this declared coming by John, in his high-vis jacket,

  15. has actually come in Jesus, the Messiah.

  16. We were reminded that those who follow Jesus

  17. are those who are the citizens of the kingdom of God,

  18. and will enjoy the fruits of that kingdom,

  19. partly now, but one day forever.

  20. And then we skipped the passage,

  21. to which all those excited people that got inspired by those words of John,

  22. were told actually to leave behind corruption.

  23. The prayers were spot on this morning.

  24. Injustice.

  25. John specifically pulls out certain people and their jobs,

  26. and the way that they were being unjust in the way they did life.

  27. And then we get our passage.

  28. So think about that.

  29. You just heard John say a load of quite heavy stuff to people

  30. about completely turning their lives around

  31. if they truly get this message.

  32. And the people were filled with expectation.

  33. Sounds a little bit different in that context.

  34. Expecting what?

  35. What's John going to say next?

  36. Uh-oh, is John going to call my career out?

  37. What was that expectation?

  38. Is John going to...

  39. Did John see me do that last week?

  40. And he's going to start picking on me as well.

  41. What did that expectation look like?

  42. But one thing we know is they got this message,

  43. was a message of good news.

  44. It was a message of the good news

  45. that the Messiah they'd been waiting for had come.

  46. But it wasn't a rosy message.

  47. I actually wonder if John was a little bit surprised

  48. with the amount of people that followed him into the desert.

  49. Maybe they got the wrong memo.

  50. Because they turned up to see this man,

  51. you know, in his camel head,

  52. eating locust and honey,

  53. and probably didn't have his straighteners,

  54. and just looking a bit rough.

  55. Telling them this message of repentance.

  56. Because this good news message that John preached,

  57. this promise of salvation,

  58. was also a warning

  59. that the one coming means business.

  60. And this business is administering God's judgment

  61. on the state of the world

  62. and the creatures and empires that distort it.

  63. I like to think of John as a little bit like Brian.

  64. I don't know if you recognise this.

  65. The Life of Brian.

  66. It's a film that actually predates me,

  67. but it's still good.

  68. It's a really good film.

  69. Sorry, if you remember watching that in your 30s,

  70. I'm very sorry.

  71. Anyway, I was going to show a couple of scenes from it, actually,

  72. but then every time I was like,

  73. that's the perfect scene,

  74. the watershed moment clocked in.

  75. I was like, ah!

  76. There's always something in the film

  77. that makes it inappropriate for church.

  78. But if you, in your own judgment and discernment,

  79. go home and watch Life of Brian,

  80. if you're old enough, etc., etc.

  81. And you remember some of those scenes

  82. where he's just this normal guy,

  83. and he's got some good things to say,

  84. but generally, people keep just following him.

  85. And I feel like John was a little bit like that.

  86. Because John gets mistaken for the Messiah.

  87. No matter what he says, people keep following him.

  88. He repeatedly told them he was not the Messiah.

  89. You can think with Brian, it's the same issue.

  90. He keeps saying, I'm not the Messiah.

  91. And they're like, yeah, that's exactly the sort of thing

  92. the Messiah would say.

  93. And I know, because I've followed a few.

  94. And there's another scene, and I love about it,

  95. where he's in trouble for something.

  96. There's a watershed moment.

  97. And his mum comes into his house.

  98. And there's a crowd of people waiting outside his door.

  99. And she goes, what's going on out there?

  100. And he goes, I don't know, mum.

  101. They're following me around.

  102. I don't know what to do.

  103. And they go, Messiah, Messiah.

  104. And she opens the door.

  105. He's not the Messiah.

  106. He's a very naughty boy.

  107. I feel like John needed his mum in the desert

  108. just to help him out a little bit.

  109. Because these people were hearing the words of John

  110. and hearing good news.

  111. But they were also hearing some tough stuff.

  112. And yet they didn't want to leave.

  113. So there was weight and honesty and integrity

  114. in these words that he was saying.

  115. It wasn't fluffy.

  116. It was real.

  117. John's message proclaimed that the coming of the Messiah

  118. meant getting your house in order.

  119. It meant repenting of your role in the brokenness of the world.

  120. Preparing through the symbolic image of cleansing

  121. through the waters of baptism

  122. for the real judgment of God.

  123. Surely this isn't that good news.

  124. For repentance means to change.

  125. It means to stop and turn around.

  126. It means to live a godly life.

  127. Repentance means to be involved in the judgment process.

  128. Looking at yourself and being honest about the things in your life

  129. that do not reflect the life of Christ.

  130. And often we wait till Easter to remind people

  131. that baby Jesus became the man

  132. who carried out the judgment of God

  133. for the sin that infested

  134. and still distorts creation.

  135. But for John,

  136. this was Jesus' primary purpose.

  137. He believed that when the Messiah

  138. made himself known,

  139. that civilization as they knew it

  140. would be fundamentally changed.

  141. The empires would be toppled.

  142. God's people would be renewed again.

  143. And so his call to repent and be baptized

  144. was about preparation for that moment

  145. when the threshing floor

  146. would be cleared

  147. and only the weak,

  148. the repentant,

  149. the willing to be changed

  150. would survive.

  151. I know what you're thinking.

  152. Come on Jay, it's Christmas.

  153. It's not quite the jolly Christmas message

  154. you'd expect two weeks before Christmas.

  155. What's with the Debbie Downer?

  156. If you don't know who Debbie Downer is,

  157. I am Debbie Downer today.

  158. Debbie Downer could be in the most amazing

  159. Walt Disney show,

  160. everything's beautiful and flashy,

  161. and she'd go,

  162. well, you know,

  163. but I wonder if they really did do enough

  164. health and safety checks.

  165. Somebody could bring the biggest present out

  166. and be like,

  167. this is going to make your day amazing.

  168. And she'd go,

  169. yeah, well,

  170. but is that paper recyclable?

  171. And I just want to throw it out there.

  172. You might feel like this about me today.

  173. Oh, he's being a bit like Debbie.

  174. I'm sorry.

  175. And I am.

  176. But like,

  177. but like,

  178. but like,

  179. John,

  180. for me,

  181. the Messiah's coming

  182. is a full gospel.

  183. And it is actually good news.

  184. It's not just we wait for the future to come.

  185. It's not just we wait till the end.

  186. It means now.

  187. The good news for Christians

  188. that we celebrate at Christmas

  189. the incarnation.

  190. We celebrate the arrival of salvation

  191. physically on earth.

  192. No longer does humanity have to wait.

  193. The new way of life has come.

  194. God has arrived

  195. and changed the trajectory

  196. of all creation

  197. away from darkness

  198. and back to its creator.

  199. We are not in the waiting room.

  200. The kingdom of God

  201. is now and not yet,

  202. but we forget the now bit

  203. too often.

  204. And Christmas is that time

  205. where we see how serious

  206. God is about it.

  207. In a baby,

  208. vulnerable,

  209. in a manger,

  210. God fleshed out

  211. on earth.

  212. For the salvation

  213. of mankind

  214. and all creation.

  215. For me,

  216. that's the message

  217. that would drag me

  218. into the desert

  219. to see a guy

  220. wearing some funny clothes

  221. and eating honey and locusts.

  222. I don't want us

  223. to miss the significance

  224. of that message.

  225. We don't have to live

  226. the corrupt narrative anymore.

  227. Because God is making

  228. all things new

  229. right now.

  230. And his people

  231. are of the new creation

  232. in Christ.

  233. We are called

  234. to actively seek

  235. his kingdom,

  236. life in our own.

  237. This is the proclamation

  238. of the good news.

  239. And this message

  240. still needs to be heard

  241. today.

  242. And maybe even

  243. still proclaimed

  244. by me and you.

  245. It's heavy,

  246. but it's freeing.

  247. The burden

  248. is light.

  249. So let me finish.

  250. I have a question.

  251. This Advent season,

  252. as we symbolically prepare,

  253. being filled again

  254. with the expectation

  255. that like those followers

  256. of John had,

  257. that like millions of people

  258. have had

  259. since the incarnation,

  260. for the coming Messiah.

  261. Will you keep this season

  262. to mince pies

  263. and carol services,

  264. amazing and great as they are,

  265. come tonight,

  266. it's going to be awesome.

  267. Or will you heed

  268. John's message?

  269. Will you heed the message

  270. of truly,

  271. fully,

  272. good news?

  273. And search your heart

  274. and choose again,

  275. or maybe for the first time,

  276. to turn towards Jesus

  277. and accept his love,

  278. to repent

  279. and welcome the power

  280. of his refining,

  281. transforming spirit

  282. into your life.

  283. because it is for the latter

  284. that the Messiah came.

  285. So let me ask you

  286. one more time.

  287. Today,

  288. as you embrace

  289. this season of Advent,

  290. will you choose afresh,

  291. or maybe for the first time,

  292. to accept the love of Jesus

  293. and welcome in

  294. his transforming spirit

  295. into your life?

  296. Amen.
