  1. Psalmist wrote, create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

  2. It's a kind of sad habit of mine that I quite like watching stuff on Netflix and Amazon Prime

  3. and get involved with these long things that have various seasons.

  4. And one of the ones that attracted my attention, partly because it had Hugh Laurie in it,

  5. who I think is one of our best British actors.

  6. It's called House.

  7. And it's the story of this brilliant diagnostic doctor, brilliant at diagnostic medicine.

  8. He can find out what's wrong with people.

  9. Speaking personally, that's what I want from a doctor.

  10. You know, I don't want to make it up.

  11. He's excellent.

  12. But, unfortunately, he is addicted to prescription painkillers.

  13. He is a very cantankerous human being, very difficult, very difficult to get on with,

  14. can't maintain a team, can't do any of that stuff.

  15. And one of his strap lines is, he repeats it all the time, he teaches it to all his,

  16. I don't know what they call him in America, but what we would call registrars.

  17. He says this, remember, everyone lies.

  18. Everyone lies.

  19. And before you dismiss that as kind of the addicted comments of a somewhat cynical doctor,

  20. let's just think about that for a moment.

  21. In psychology today, I read that champion liars, that's a research category apparently,

  22. champion liars tell about seven lies per day.

  23. That is one every, well, kind of three hours, I guess, of waking.

  24. No, it's more than that, isn't it?

  25. I need to read maths today.

  26. We read that most people in marriages tell lies to each other.

  27. We might judge them as harmless lies, like, you know, my wife says to me,

  28. are you listening to me?

  29. Yes.

  30. Or somebody might say, does my bum look big in this?

  31. And well, betide the person who says, yes, it does.

  32. The weight of psychological evidence tells us something really scary.

  33. And that is, people who lie in small things tend to tell lies in big things as well.

  34. We also know that extroverts incline to lie more,

  35. and people who are obsessed with what psychologists call personality management tell lies

  36. simply to bolster their image.

  37. I was in somebody's home the other day, and they were talking about their little girl.

  38. I don't know where the mother comes from, but she's, you know, sounds very Thames Valley.

  39. And she said that her daughter had gone to school and told the teachers that her mother was Brazilian.

  40. It's kind of completely random lie.

  41. She never been to Brazil.

  42. She's not Brazilian.

  43. It just kind of, you know, provokes and says, oh, your mom's from Brazil.

  44. Well, she's not.

  45. By the way of introduction, I also want to remind you that quite a lot of the way

  46. that our society works is built on trust.

  47. Go and see your doctor.

  48. You have to trust what the doctor says to you.

  49. You step on an airplane.

  50. You hope that the guy who's going to fly you to wherever you're going,

  51. you're hoping it's not his first day at work.

  52. Or as Brexit reminds us, if we can't trust our politicians,

  53. then we end up divided and mistrusting.

  54. Or, of course, closer to home.

  55. Relationships rely on trust.

  56. Business relationships rely on trust.

  57. And what I want to say to you about promises is that one thing all promises have in common

  58. is that they rely on a level of trust and they rely on a level of commitment.

  59. The heart of our society, which hopefully is broadly civilized, is a government.

  60. They pass regulation and laws and society works where that bond of trust between government and people

  61. is that the people seek to commit to keep the law.

  62. At least that's the idea.

  63. Mostly, even though we try and keep the law,

  64. we probably would admit at points we're not too good at it.

  65. 30 mile an hour limits.

  66. Somewhat challenging for many of us.

  67. 20 mile an hour limits.

  68. Impossible.

  69. Modern cars aren't geared to drive at that speed.

  70. Psalm 51 introduces to a psalm written by King David.

  71. A man greatly revered in Jewish history.

  72. But to understand this psalm, you have to look back in the Bible

  73. as to why David was going through such a terrible time at this moment in his life.

  74. And if you turn to 2 Samuel, you don't have to do that,

  75. but you have to trust me for a moment to tell you what it's about.

  76. And I'm going to paraphrase this story, A, to make it shorter,

  77. and B, to get to the point.

  78. David, one night, is having a quiet evening

  79. and he steps out on the roof of his condominium.

  80. And he looks across the street.

  81. And across the street, there is an open window and the lights on.

  82. I don't think they did curtains in those days.

  83. And he sees this beautiful woman, whose name is Bathsheba,

  84. step into the light, remove her clothes, and start to wash.

  85. And unlike the man of Christ's church, Clevedon,

  86. who would look away immediately,

  87. he stared.

  88. And lust was kindled in his heart.

  89. And he wanted that woman with a driving passion

  90. that meant that he became out of control.

  91. And so he committed adultery with her.

  92. She was married to a man called Uriah.

  93. And then, even worse,

  94. David arranged that Uriah would be taken to the front of the battlefield

  95. and isolated so that he would inevitably be killed.

  96. And he was killed.

  97. And I don't know how David dealt with his conscience.

  98. I don't know how you deal with your conscience.

  99. But David seemed to be doing okay

  100. until, unfortunately, God sent this man called Nathan,

  101. who was a prophet.

  102. And Nathan got a really smart tactic here.

  103. He starts to tell this story.

  104. He says there was a wealthy man,

  105. had a load of sheep and camels and very wealthy.

  106. And then there was this poor man who had a little lamb.

  107. And he said the poor man had brought this lamb up

  108. as if it were his own daughter.

  109. He'd hand-fed it, hand-raared it and everything.

  110. Came to a feast day.

  111. And the rich man, instead of taking one of his own sheep,

  112. one of his many sheep,

  113. took the lamb off the poor man

  114. and killed it.

  115. And he and his friends ate it.

  116. And David's pumped up with indignation.

  117. He's like, I could get my hands on that guy.

  118. And Nathan says,

  119. you were the man.

  120. And part of what I am to David,

  121. after that shocking revelation,

  122. is that he wrote Psalm 51.

  123. Have mercy on me, O God,

  124. according to your unfailing love,

  125. according to your great compassion,

  126. blot out my transgressions.

  127. David was told by God in 2 Samuel

  128. that there would be consequences

  129. as a result of his behavior.

  130. One of the lessons we learn from Psalm 51 is this.

  131. That privilege brings responsibility.

  132. Indeed, it's pretty easy to argue from Scripture

  133. that one of the central messages

  134. of the Old Testament prophets

  135. was that privilege implies responsibility.

  136. In old covenant terms,

  137. it would go like this.

  138. You are one of God's chosen people.

  139. Therefore, you have to keep the law.

  140. That was the kind of theological

  141. slash psychological contract

  142. that God had with his people.

  143. The one thing that is certain in that contract

  144. is God is faithful.

  145. That's been the thread that has run through

  146. this whole teaching series.

  147. We might be a bit iffy,

  148. but God is faithful.

  149. Even David, in the depths of his guilt,

  150. seems to say it still hold on to that.

  151. Lord, have mercy on me,

  152. according to your unfailing love.

  153. This is not a fair-weather friend called God.

  154. This is a God who loves us

  155. because essentially God is love.

  156. He can't not love you.

  157. In 1 Thessalonians chapter 4,

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  158. we read Paul writing this.

  159. He says to the Christians that,

  160. this is how we instructed you to live

  161. in order to please God.

  162. In New Testament terms,

  163. the way that psychological,

  164. theological contract works is

  165. that in return for being the adopted children of God,

  166. God places on us a responsibility

  167. to live in a different way.

  168. A way that will bring us the blessing

  169. that God wants for us.

  170. But the problem is,

  171. we let God down.

  172. As Dr. House would say,

  173. everybody lies.

  174. You know that thing in the Bible,

  175. I think it's one of the most punishing

  176. little phrases in the Bible.

  177. It's just before Jesus tells the story

  178. of the Good Samaritan.

  179. You remember this lawyer comes to Jesus

  180. and says to him,

  181. what must I do to inherit eternal life?

  182. Jesus quotes to him the Shema.

  183. You must love the Lord your God

  184. with all your heart,

  185. with all your mind,

  186. with all your soul,

  187. and with all your strength.

  188. And the lawyer,

  189. it says,

  190. and these are the words, right?

  191. I want you to hear these words

  192. and ask yourself this question,

  193. how much do these words fit you?

  194. It said the lawyer,

  195. it said,

  196. he wishing to justify himself.

  197. Let me ask you a question.

  198. When you do,

  199. don't shout out the answer.

  200. When you do something wrong,

  201. is your first response

  202. to want to justify what you've done?

  203. I have heard people

  204. defend preposterous things.

  205. I've talked to murderers in prison

  206. who justify what they did to their wives

  207. or to some innocent guy in the street.

  208. He was looking at me funny,

  209. so I killed him.

  210. Some would say that's a little touchy.

  211. But bring it closer to home.

  212. You're having words

  213. with the person you claim to love the most.

  214. And you say something

  215. you should never have said.

  216. What's your first response?

  217. I'm going to justify myself here.

  218. I'm going to justify myself.

  219. What 1 Thessalonians chapter 4 teaches us is,

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  220. firstly,

  221. if we're going to live

  222. in order to please God,

  223. then we need to be instructed in that.

  224. It doesn't come naturally to us.

  225. The life that God wants you to have

  226. is so difficult for us

  227. because he asks you to live in a way

  228. that's not necessarily natural to you.

  229. That's why the whole discipleship thing

  230. is such a struggle.

  231. Our commitment,

  232. our promise,

  233. is to live as he would have us live.

  234. It asks things of us

  235. that would not fit in

  236. with the way we naturally behave.

  237. In 1 Corinthians chapter 6,

    1 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

  238. I mean, this is really close to home,

  239. forgive me,

  240. but it says,

  241. do you not know

  242. that your bodies are temples

  243. of the Holy Spirit

  244. who is in you,

  245. whom you have received from God.

  246. You are not your own.

  247. You were bought at a price.

  248. What we read about

  249. in our newspapers every day

  250. is that we're not that good

  251. at temple maintenance.

  252. Many of us don't exercise.

  253. Many of us eat too much.

  254. Many of us abuse alcohol.

  255. Many of us,

  256. the list goes on.

  257. We forget,

  258. do we not,

  259. that we were bought

  260. at a price.

  261. And that price

  262. is the shed blood

  263. of Jesus Christ

  264. on the cross of Calvary.

  265. You sit light

  266. to the

  267. psychological promise

  268. you made

  269. if you're a follower of Christ

  270. to live as He wants you to live.

  271. You sacrifice two things.

  272. One blessing.

  273. And two,

  274. you sacrifice

  275. your own well-being

  276. because you start

  277. to feel guilty.

  278. How many of us

  279. how many of us

  280. when we're in

  281. the kind of

  282. temptation zone

  283. think to ourselves,

  284. you know what,

  285. I need to be careful here

  286. because I've been bought

  287. at a price.

  288. We're more likely

  289. to say to someone,

  290. wow, you know what,

  291. nobody will find out.

  292. It doesn't matter.

  293. And she does.

  294. Second thing we learn

  295. from Psalm 51

  296. is that all of us

  297. are temptable.

  298. That part of our human nature

  299. is frail.

  300. I don't need to lecture you

  301. about that.

  302. I've got a classroom

  303. full of experts.

  304. Whatever the temptation

  305. might be,

  306. be it pornography,

  307. alcohol,

  308. food,

  309. jealousy,

  310. chocolate,

  311. whatever,

  312. there is always something

  313. that catches us out.

  314. And the devil

  315. knows exactly

  316. where your weak spot is.

  317. weakness.

  318. And he will maneuver

  319. any which way he can

  320. to exploit that weakness.

  321. And the worst thing

  322. that you can do

  323. is to start to think

  324. that when it comes

  325. to temptation,

  326. you are somehow

  327. bulletproof.

  328. The way of Christian

  329. discipleship

  330. is littered

  331. with the corpses

  332. of men and women.

  333. Men and women

  334. who thought

  335. they could handle it.

  336. And I remember

  337. once

  338. a man came to me

  339. when I was a vicar

  340. and he said to me,

  341. fairly young Christian,

  342. he said,

  343. I need to talk to you,

  344. Mike.

  345. I said,

  346. okay.

  347. He said,

  348. I'm a commuter,

  349. I go train

  350. on the work every day.

  351. I sit next to the same

  352. woman every day.

  353. He said,

  354. most unusually

  355. for commuters,

  356. we kind of got talking

  357. a little bit and

  358. we've had a couple

  359. of lunches together.

  360. And I'm starting

  361. to feel

  362. some unworthy

  363. feelings about her.

  364. What would your

  365. advice be?

  366. My advice

  367. was simple.

  368. Change trains.

  369. See,

  370. you need to know

  371. what your

  372. vulnerable area

  373. is when it comes

  374. to temptation

  375. and you need

  376. to keep away

  377. from it.

  378. David

  379. had certainly

  380. discovered

  381. that one

  382. of his weaknesses,

  383. actually I think

  384. generally you would

  385. say of David,

  386. he had relationship

  387. issues.

  388. But one of his

  389. issues was

  390. sexual lust

  391. that could be

  392. kindled in his

  393. heart.

  394. And a lot of men

  395. are like that.

  396. We need to be

  397. aware of our

  398. weak area.

  399. You know,

  400. if you've been

  401. struggling with

  402. alcohol,

  403. probably better

  404. stay away from

  405. off licenses

  406. and pubs,

  407. right?

  408. If your

  409. weakness is

  410. you could

  411. easily fall

  412. in love with

  413. another man

  414. or another

  415. woman,

  416. don't put

  417. yourself in

  418. that situation.

  419. Immediately

  420. withdraw.

  421. The third

  422. thing we

  423. learned from

  424. this story

  425. is that

  426. many of us

  427. fail.

  428. I read

  429. in a book

  430. once that

  431. 85% of

  432. New Year's

  433. resolutions

  434. have gone

  435. by the

  436. board by

  437. the middle

  438. of February.

  439. 85%.

  440. I read

  441. that a

  442. third of

  443. the people,

  444. which was

  445. 4.2 million

  446. people this

  447. year,

  448. who decided

  449. they would

  450. go for dry

  451. January,

  452. a third of

  453. them gave

  454. up before

  455. the end

  456. of January.

  457. We fail.

  458. I go,

  459. come clean

  460. about this.

  461. You know,

  462. I have a

  463. streak in

  464. my nature,

  465. which is a

  466. bit,

  467. you know,

  468. I have to

  469. resist it.

  470. You know,

  471. it says,

  472. do not step

  473. on the grass,

  474. right?

  475. There's a bit

  476. of me that

  477. has to step

  478. on the grass,

  479. right?

  480. When I was

  481. at university,

  482. it said,

  483. you know,

  484. the lawns

  485. are for the

  486. use of the

  487. dons altogether.

  488. I used to

  489. go on the,

  490. you know,

  491. people come

  492. to me and

  493. say,

  494. you were

  495. done.

  496. I didn't

  497. say yes.

  498. I think

  499. we're all

  500. a bit like

  501. that.

  502. You know,

  503. we're not

  504. all of us,

  505. but many

  506. of us kind

  507. of,

  508. you know,

  509. have this

  510. little bit

  511. of the

  512. devil in

  513. us or

  514. something that

  515. just can't

  516. resist.

  517. But here's

  518. the thing

  519. about those

  520. things we

  521. get wrong.

  522. We break

  523. a promise.

  524. We seek

  525. God's

  526. forgiveness.

  527. And how

  528. many of us

  529. are like

  530. this,

  531. right?

  532. you have

  533. done

  534. something

  535. wrong

  536. that you've

  537. been doing

  538. wrong for

  539. quite a long

  540. time.

  541. So you

  542. think,

  543. you know

  544. what,

  545. I'm going

  546. to sort

  547. this out

  548. now.

  549. So you

  550. go and

  551. you get

  552. on your

  553. knees or

  554. whatever you

  555. do and

  556. you say

  557. you're really

  558. sorry to

  559. God and

  560. you're

  561. like,

  562. wow,

  563. dealt

  564. with.

  565. And you

  566. do it

  567. again and

  568. you do it

  569. again and

  570. you get into

  571. this repeat

  572. cycle of

  573. breaking a

  574. promise,

  575. asking God's

  576. forgiveness,

  577. breaking a

  578. promise and

  579. asking God's

  580. forgiveness.

  581. And you

  582. say,

  583. oh,

  584. that's great.

  585. You know,

  586. grace will

  587. cover the

  588. base.

  589. In a way

  590. you're right,

  591. but in a way

  592. you're wrong.

  593. Because if

  594. you keep

  595. behaving like

  596. this,

  597. it will

  598. poison your

  599. soul.

  600. You know,

  601. Paul had to

  602. deal with a

  603. situation in

  604. Rome where

  605. the Christian

  606. church there

  607. clearly got the

  608. word about

  609. grace,

  610. God's love

  611. shown to us

  612. even though we

  613. don't merit that

  614. love.

  615. They got that

  616. message,

  617. so they're

  618. thinking,

  619. we can do

  620. what we like

  621. now.

  622. But Paul had

  623. to say to

  624. them,

  625. you know,

  626. shall we sin

  627. the more that

  628. grace may abound?

  629. Romans chapter

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  630. 6 in verse

  631. 1.

  632. He said,

  633. no,

  634. that's not the

  635. way it works.

  636. I mean,

  637. we can trust

  638. grace,

  639. but we can't

  640. keep behaving

  641. badly,

  642. going back to

  643. going,

  644. it will hurt

  645. your soul,

  646. believe me.

  647. We learn also

  648. that God is a

  649. faithful God.

  650. The whole

  651. assumption of

  652. this psalm in

  653. David's mind

  654. is that though

  655. he has been

  656. unbelievably

  657. unfaithful in

  658. his shenanigans

  659. with

  660. Bathsheba,

  661. is that

  662. God is

  663. faithful.

  664. Indeed,

  665. the whole

  666. of the

  667. Bible

  668. reinforces

  669. this idea.

  670. And this,

  671. you know,

  672. I want to

  673. speak to

  674. one or two

  675. of you

  676. here today

  677. in particular.

  678. And that's

  679. those of you

  680. who've been

  681. brought up

  682. to believe

  683. that God

  684. is faithful,

  685. but actually

  686. something's

  687. gone wrong

  688. in your life

  689. and you

  690. feel that

  691. God has

  692. badly

  693. let you

  694. down.

  695. You know,

  696. I don't

  697. know if

  698. this is

  699. you,

  700. but again,

  701. all the

  702. research I've

  703. read about

  704. people in

  705. the twilight

  706. years of

  707. their life,

  708. people like

  709. me,

  710. is that

  711. many of

  712. them get

  713. to old

  714. age with

  715. a deep

  716. and uneradicable

  717. sense of

  718. guilt,

  719. sense of

  720. regret.

  721. And if

  722. you're that

  723. person,

  724. you can

  725. stop being

  726. that person

  727. today,

  728. because God

  729. is faithful.

  730. But many

  731. of us know

  732. that in our

  733. heads,

  734. but then

  735. there's

  736. something called

  737. my life,

  738. my dead

  739. husband,

  740. my child,

  741. my hopeless

  742. marriage,

  743. my secret

  744. addiction.

  745. The list

  746. goes on,

  747. and I'm

  748. actually left

  749. wondering

  750. whether God

  751. is trustable,

  752. because

  753. something's

  754. gone wrong.

  755. Well,

  756. you know

  757. this,

  758. you know,

  759. it's an easy

  760. thing to

  761. trot out,

  762. it's not

  763. what happens,

  764. but it's

  765. how you

  766. deal with

  767. it in

  768. life.

  769. God

  770. asks us

  771. to trust

  772. even

  773. though we

  774. don't feel

  775. like it.

  776. And also,

  777. scripture

  778. tells us

  779. that what

  780. we can't

  781. understand

  782. now,

  783. there will

  784. one day

  785. be a

  786. day

  787. when we

  788. can

  789. understand

  790. it.

  791. But the

  792. deal breaker

  793. is we

  794. need to

  795. trust,

  796. even when

  797. there seems

  798. to be

  799. no good

  800. reason for

  801. trusting.

  802. In a way,

  803. that's what

  804. faith is.

  805. God is

  806. indeed

  807. faithful.

  808. Life's

  809. adversity

  810. and our

  811. suffering

  812. can either

  813. make us

  814. stronger

  815. or make

  816. us

  817. bitter.

  818. And when

  819. you give

  820. most people

  821. that choice,

  822. they don't

  823. want to live

  824. a life of

  825. unrelenting

  826. bitterness.

  827. Let's come

  828. again to

  829. the God

  830. who is

  831. faithful.

  832. Asking

  833. God's

  834. forgiveness

  835. is important

  836. for two

  837. reasons.

  838. I've heard

  839. people say

  840. this to

  841. me,

  842. if God

  843. knows

  844. everything,

  845. why do

  846. I have to

  847. confess my

  848. sin to

  849. him?

  850. There's a

  851. kind of

  852. logic about

  853. that,

  854. isn't

  855. there?

  856. Here's the

  857. thing,

  858. there are

  859. two reasons

  860. why you

  861. need to

  862. confess your

  863. sin.

  864. One,

  865. it signals

  866. to God

  867. that you're

  868. serious about

  869. your wrongdoing

  870. and two,

  871. it opens

  872. the door for

  873. you to seek

  874. his help

  875. in overcoming

  876. the wrongdoing.

  877. If we claim

  878. to be without

  879. sin,

  880. we deceive

  881. ourselves and

  882. the truth is

  883. not in us.

  884. But if we

  885. confess our

  886. sins,

  887. God is

  888. faithful and

  889. just to

  890. forgive us

  891. our sins

  892. and cleanse

  893. us from

  894. all unrighteousness.

  895. you hear the

  896. significance of

  897. that.

  898. God doesn't

  899. want to just

  900. forgive you,

  901. he wants to

  902. cleanse you

  903. of the

  904. temptation

  905. that's

  906. tripping you

  907. up.

  908. And my

  909. final point is

  910. this,

  911. help is

  912. available.

  913. And it's

  914. called the

  915. Holy Spirit.

  916. John says

  917. when he comes

  918. he will prove

  919. the world to

  920. be in the

  921. wrong about

  922. sin and

  923. righteousness

  924. and judgment.

  925. It says the

  926. Holy Spirit

  927. will convict

  928. us.

  929. But it says

  930. that the

  931. Holy Spirit

  932. will give us

  933. the inner

  934. strength to

  935. deal with

  936. temptation

  937. when it

  938. comes our

  939. way.

  940. I prayed

  941. at the

  942. beginning of

  943. this message

  944. that God

  945. would send

  946. down his

  947. fire.

  948. And you

  949. need to

  950. know that

  951. when it

  952. comes to

  953. breaking

  954. promises,

  955. you're

  956. probably

  957. guilty.

  958. And the

  959. bottom line

  960. is you

  961. can seek

  962. God's

  963. forgiveness,

  964. but don't

  965. just seek

  966. his forgiveness.

  967. Seek his

  968. cleansing.

  969. Is there

  970. anybody in

  971. the house

  972. who would

  973. love to be

  974. cleansed by

  975. the Holy

  976. Spirit?

  977. Would love

  978. to push to

  979. one side a

  980. habit that's

  981. been tripping

  982. them up for

  983. a very long

  984. time?

  985. Is there

  986. anybody in

  987. the house

  988. who needs

  989. to know

  990. maybe for

  991. the first

  992. time in

  993. their heart,

  994. they get it

  995. in their

  996. head,

  997. but in

  998. their heart,

  999. that the

  1000. spilled blood

  1001. of Jesus

  1002. Christ on

  1003. the cross

  1004. of Calvary

  1005. will cover

  1006. everything you

  1007. have ever

  1008. done.

  1009. And you

  1010. can access

  1011. God's

  1012. forgiveness.

  1013. See,

  1014. if the

  1015. answer to

  1016. those questions

  1017. is no,

  1018. then your

  1019. life will

  1020. be robbed

  1021. of hope

  1022. and robbed

  1023. of confidence.

  1024. You know,

  1025. the Bible

  1026. makes the

  1027. assumption

  1028. that,

  1029. you know,

  1030. the word

  1031. we translate

  1032. into priest

  1033. in English

  1034. is a word

  1035. that really

  1036. means elder.

  1037. And one of

  1038. the assumptions

  1039. of the New

  1040. Testament

  1041. was,

  1042. the people

  1043. who lead

  1044. the church

  1045. will be

  1046. older

  1047. because

  1048. they have

  1049. wisdom.

  1050. That's why

  1051. when Paul

  1052. wrote to

  1053. Timothy,

  1054. Timothy was

  1055. clearly an

  1056. exception

  1057. because he

  1058. was a

  1059. young

  1060. church

  1061. leader.

  1062. Let me

  1063. tell you

  1064. this.

  1065. Some of

  1066. the most

  1067. childish

  1068. people I

  1069. know are

  1070. elderly.

  1071. some of

  1072. the most

  1073. bitter

  1074. people I

  1075. know

  1076. are

  1077. elderly.

  1078. And

  1079. friends,

  1080. you know,

  1081. I'm not going

  1082. to say you're

  1083. in the waiting

  1084. room for

  1085. heaven,

  1086. but I am

  1087. going to say

  1088. you need to

  1089. start to

  1090. deal with

  1091. this stuff

  1092. now.

  1093. I used

  1094. to feel

  1095. when I

  1096. was in

  1097. church

  1098. ministry

  1099. that the

  1100. elderly

  1101. people got

  1102. a bit

  1103. ignored

  1104. only because

  1105. they were

  1106. faithful in

  1107. their

  1108. attendance,

  1109. they were

  1110. there every

  1111. week.

  1112. So most

  1113. clergy made

  1114. the assumption

  1115. they're

  1116. all right.

  1117. They're

  1118. really not.

  1119. Like the

  1120. rest of us,

  1121. they need

  1122. heart help.

  1123. They need

  1124. the empowerment

  1125. of the Holy

  1126. Spirit as we

  1127. all do.

  1128. That we may

  1129. know the

  1130. forgiveness of

  1131. God in our

  1132. hearts.

  1133. Broken

  1134. promises will

  1135. become less

  1136. and less a

  1137. part of our

  1138. lives.

  1139. And we

  1140. shall have

  1141. sweet fellowship

  1142. with God

  1143. in the

  1144. light.

  1145. And that

  1146. will have

  1147. consequences

  1148. in our

  1149. lives that

  1150. are positive.

  1151. Just as

  1152. breaking

  1153. promises

  1154. has consequences

  1155. in our

  1156. life.

  1157. Because it

  1158. will hurt

  1159. your soul.

  1160. And I

  1161. have to tell

  1162. you that

  1163. because your

  1164. soul matters

  1165. to me.

  1166. God's

  1167. love

  1168. and I

  1169. want you

  1170. to feel

  1171. the freedom

  1172. of the

  1173. grace and

  1174. the forgiveness

  1175. and the

  1176. power of God

  1177. in your

  1178. life.
