  1. As a church, we're following a series looking at how we can grow as human beings in Jesus Christ

  2. and drawing particularly on something that comes up in one of Paul's letters

  3. where Paul talks of fruit of the Spirit.

  4. It's an image that just as fruit grows gradually,

  5. so we have this vision within the New Testament that during the course of our lives,

  6. God wants to continue growing things, spiritual realities within our lives.

  7. And there is a list, not of different fruits, it's not the plural, it's a singular.

  8. When Paul talks about fruit of the Spirit, spiritual fruit,

  9. he talks about fruit but with different aspects of that fruit.

  10. So the idea is that as we grow as Christians,

  11. all of these things actually grow as reality in our lives.

  12. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

  13. Today we're thinking specifically about joy.

  14. Our Gospel reading, which Carolyn is going to bring to us now,

  15. picks up halfway through a piece of narrative in Luke's Gospel.

  16. Just to paint the picture.

  17. Jesus has been talking to his disciples about how being a Christian can be difficult.

  18. He warns them, it's going to be tough, they're not in for an easy ride.

  19. Then he prays for them and sends them out to go and to preach,

  20. to take the message of good news to people and to pray for people that they may be healed.

  21. And depending on which exact translation of Scripture you use,

  22. either 70 or 72 of these people that Jesus has sent out,

  23. they come back to Jesus really excited over the things that have been taking place

  24. as they went out to minister to people.

  25. And so we're going to join the story in Luke chapter 10

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  26. as the disciples come back and tell Jesus everything that they have seen and heard.

  27. Carolyn is going to read to us from Luke chapter 10, verse 17.

    Luke 10:17

  28. Thank you, Carolyn.

  29. C.H. Spurgeon was a Baptist preacher and scholarly writer of the 1800s.

  30. He was training a group of people to become preachers.

  31. He was speaking to them one day about the importance of facial expression

  32. when preaching and he said to them,

  33. when you're talking about heaven,

  34. then your faces should be full of joy.

  35. They should express that sense of joy and happiness.

  36. You should look bright.

  37. You should look alive and full of joy.

  38. When you're preaching about the subject of hell,

  39. well, then your normal faces will do.

  40. Don't know about you,

  41. but I find coming to think about joy

  42. as a fruit of the Spirit,

  43. coming to think of it as something that God expects,

  44. expects to grow in us as Christians

  45. alongside these other things,

  46. I find that, in fact,

  47. the most challenging and the most difficult thing.

  48. And the reason why I find it so challenging and so difficult

  49. is I look at the other eight.

  50. There's nine in this list.

  51. I look at the other eight.

  52. Love, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,

  53. faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

  54. All of those seem to have something in common

  55. that joy does not.

  56. Because I think of those things,

  57. and I think even though I might not feel those things

  58. deep inside of me,

  59. I can understand how God actually can enable me

  60. by his grace to discipline those things.

  61. So those things could be realities,

  62. even though they might not match

  63. the way I, or indeed any of us, feel.

  64. Just think about it for a moment.

  65. Love.

  66. Now, you might not feel love.

  67. Love can be a feeling,

  68. but it's much more than that.

  69. And I think we can all kind of get that,

  70. that there will be times when love kicks into action,

  71. when you don't perhaps feel it inside,

  72. but you know what the right thing is to do.

  73. Love makes sacrifices,

  74. even when it might not feel an emotion inside.

  75. Peace.

  76. You might not feel at peace,

  77. but it's something that somehow you can kind of give,

  78. you can bring that about in people, in others.

  79. Patience.

  80. You might not feel inwardly like being patient,

  81. but it can become an action that you're willing to wait,

  82. even though it's hard.

  83. Kindness.

  84. Again, you may not feel like it,

  85. but you can do it.

  86. Goodness.

  87. The same can be said of that.

  88. And faithfulness.

  89. And gentleness.

  90. Self-control.

  91. All of those things can be regarded as disciplines,

  92. as things that God's Holy Spirit can nurture in us,

  93. even when the way we feel inside

  94. is telling us something very different.

  95. But joy, it strikes me, is quite different.

  96. It stands out on its own,

  97. because I can't think of joy

  98. and think of anything other than an apparent feeling

  99. and an emotion.

  100. And so I think to myself,

  101. how do I make sense of that

  102. when I just don't feel it inside?

  103. Get this from the words of the Methodist funeral service, okay?

  104. This is some of the words that are said in the service book

  105. at the beginning of a Methodist funeral.

  106. In the presence of death,

  107. Christ offers us sure hope,

  108. sorry, sure ground for hope

  109. and confidence

  110. and even joy.

  111. Now think how the average feeling,

  112. the place on the sort of emotional clock is

  113. at your average funeral.

  114. Most people, I would say,

  115. are probably not in this kind of emotional state

  116. that we would describe as joy

  117. at that moment in our lives.

  118. And yet it is there,

  119. clearly,

  120. in our liturgy.

  121. And if we tended to think

  122. that this is only some kind of secondary thing

  123. as far as New Testament teaching is concerned,

  124. think again.

  125. Because the word joy

  126. comes up approximately 60 times

  127. in the New Testament.

  128. And the summons to rejoice

  129. comes up closer to 70 times

  130. in the New Testament.

  131. So this is no minor thing.

  132. So as I read this,

  133. it challenges me to the core

  134. because I think,

  135. how do I make sense of those times

  136. when I don't feel a sense of joy inside

  137. and yet it would seem

  138. that if God's Holy Spirit

  139. is active within me,

  140. there is an expectation on God's part

  141. that it ought to be a reality.

  142. How do I make sense of that?

  143. How do I make sense of that?

  144. For one thing,

  145. I'm challenged as to how I understand joy.

  146. Because I'm tempted to think of it

  147. as a feeling,

  148. as an emotion.

  149. Of course it can be.

  150. But when I set it alongside

  151. those other eight gifts of the Spirit,

  152. fruit of the Spirit,

  153. sorry,

  154. love,

  155. peace,

  156. patience,

  157. kindness,

  158. goodness,

  159. faithfulness,

  160. gentleness,

  161. self-control,

  162. it would seem

  163. that there is something

  164. that goes beyond

  165. emotion and feeling.

  166. So let's be quite clear,

  167. joy,

  168. whilst it can be

  169. an emotional feeling,

  170. it's got to mean,

  171. got to mean

  172. something deeper

  173. than that.

  174. C.S. Lewis

  175. talked about

  176. joy as

  177. something closer

  178. to a sense of yearning,

  179. a sense that we look

  180. in our lives

  181. and we see the realities

  182. and our lives

  183. darkened by circumstances,

  184. but there's something

  185. deep within us

  186. that knows,

  187. yearns for something

  188. different and better

  189. and senses that actually

  190. there can be

  191. and there will be.

  192. And it's not reality yet,

  193. but it will be.

  194. And it's that sense,

  195. that point of tension

  196. that actually we can describe

  197. as that sense of joy.

  198. It's not always apparent,

  199. but it's there.

  200. It's there.

  201. It's there.

  202. But what about

  203. that kind of

  204. contrast that we see

  205. between stuff

  206. going on in our lives,

  207. the way we feel,

  208. and that challenge

  209. to joy,

  210. to have joy?

  211. Well,

  212. what I want to suggest

  213. is perhaps

  214. it is precisely

  215. in that contradiction

  216. or that apparent

  217. contradiction

  218. between how we feel

  219. and what we read

  220. in Scripture

  221. that actually gives us

  222. a practical way forward.

  223. Let me say a bit more

  224. about what I mean by that.

  225. A couple of weeks ago

  226. when I was preaching

  227. here before,

  228. I made reference

  229. to a great Christian leader

  230. called Dr. Martin Lloyd-Jones.

  231. He was,

  232. for over 30 years,

  233. pastor of Westminster Chapel

  234. in London.

  235. And Martin Lloyd-Jones,

  236. who came from

  237. medical background,

  238. in 1964, 1965,

  239. preached a series

  240. of sermons

  241. over the course

  242. of a year

  243. at Westminster Chapel,

  244. which eventually

  245. became published

  246. in the book

  247. Spiritual Depression.

  248. And in that book,

  249. even though it was written

  250. over half a century ago now,

  251. it still speaks

  252. to our contemporary world,

  253. I would say.

  254. He takes,

  255. as his central theme,

  256. this idea

  257. that we spend

  258. too much time

  259. listening to ourselves.

  260. We spend too much time

  261. listening to our emotions

  262. and what our inner feelings

  263. are telling us.

  264. Whereas,

  265. Martin Lloyd-Jones says,

  266. we need to spend

  267. less time

  268. listening to ourselves

  269. and more time

  270. talking to ourselves.

  271. Now,

  272. when he said that,

  273. he didn't mean

  274. talking to yourselves

  275. in the sort of way that,

  276. I don't know about you,

  277. but if I'm honest,

  278. I do.

  279. If I'm on my own,

  280. and I'm saying,

  281. Russell,

  282. what are you doing?

  283. Why did I come upstairs?

  284. What did I come into

  285. this room for?

  286. Oh yeah,

  287. I think I'll make myself

  288. a cup of coffee.

  289. He's not talking about

  290. that kind of talking

  291. to yourself.

  292. He actually says,

  293. we need to preach

  294. to ourselves.

  295. And what he means

  296. by that is,

  297. we don't just present

  298. our own thoughts

  299. to ourselves.

  300. Instead,

  301. we actually take

  302. the words of Scripture,

  303. even though,

  304. no,

  305. precisely because

  306. they stand

  307. in stark contradiction

  308. with the way we feel,

  309. and we bring

  310. those truths

  311. of Scripture

  312. to bear

  313. on our circumstances

  314. and on our feelings.

  315. He says this,

  316. instead of allowing

  317. the future

  318. and thoughts of it

  319. to grip you,

  320. talk to yourself.

  321. Remind yourself

  322. of who you are

  323. and what you are

  324. and of what spirit

  325. is within you.

  326. And having reminded yourself

  327. of the character

  328. of the spirit,

  329. you will be able

  330. to go steadily forward,

  331. fearing nothing,

  332. living in the present,

  333. ready for the future,

  334. with one desire only,

  335. to glorify him

  336. who gave his all for you.

  337. Rather than allowing

  338. our culture,

  339. allowing our circumstances

  340. and our feelings

  341. to dictate things,

  342. we need to draw

  343. on God's living word

  344. precisely because

  345. it contradicts

  346. our feelings,

  347. our circumstances

  348. and our culture.

  349. I read a book

  350. not that long ago

  351. called

  352. The Happy Christian.

  353. Now, if that sounds

  354. a bit trivial to you,

  355. it's actually quite

  356. a serious book.

  357. It was written by

  358. a guy called

  359. David Murray

  360. who's a professor

  361. of practical theology

  362. and he looks

  363. at two things.

  364. He looks at the

  365. theology of joy

  366. and happiness

  367. and he also looks

  368. at the psychology,

  369. what is known in psychology

  370. as positive thinking,

  371. as a serious science.

  372. And he makes a number

  373. of really,

  374. really interesting observations

  375. and he begins

  376. his discourse

  377. on The Happy Christian

  378. by citing

  379. some research,

  380. not,

  381. this isn't theological research,

  382. this is psychology.

  383. Psychology which says

  384. that apparently,

  385. and I acknowledge

  386. that it's not

  387. that easy

  388. to sort of

  389. quantify these things,

  390. but it's generally

  391. reckoned

  392. by positive

  393. psychologists

  394. that

  395. our circumstances

  396. generally

  397. only account

  398. for about

  399. 10%

  400. of our state

  401. of mood.

  402. 10%.

  403. So by circumstances

  404. it could be

  405. financial well-being,

  406. it could be

  407. the state

  408. of relationships,

  409. how happy

  410. you are

  411. in your job,

  412. in your work,

  413. how happy

  414. you feel

  415. at home.

  416. Generally speaking,

  417. the circumstances,

  418. things external

  419. to yourself,

  420. those things

  421. generally

  422. only account

  423. for about

  424. 10%

  425. of your state

  426. of mood

  427. on average

  428. at any given

  429. time.

  430. So what about

  431. the other 90?

  432. Well get this,

  433. it's reckoned

  434. that about

  435. 50%,

  436. yes,

  437. half,

  438. half

  439. of our

  440. mood

  441. is set

  442. genetically.

  443. It's in your

  444. DNA.

  445. You can't do

  446. anything about it,

  447. it's at a lower

  448. base,

  449. it will move

  450. a little bit

  451. like that,

  452. but generally

  453. speaking,

  454. all of us

  455. have about

  456. ourselves

  457. a state

  458. of psychological

  459. disposition

  460. that can sort

  461. of change,

  462. but it's always

  463. going to be

  464. at a certain

  465. ground base.

  466. Now that may

  467. bring you comfort,

  468. it may not,

  469. but that is

  470. generally,

  471. I can't

  472. emphasise strongly

  473. enough,

  474. generally

  475. reckoned

  476. as a broad

  477. brush

  478. figure.

  479. So the

  480. mathematicians

  481. among us

  482. will be

  483. thinking,

  484. what were

  485. the other

  486. 40%?

  487. The other

  488. 40%,

  489. it is

  490. reckoned,

  491. of our

  492. mood

  493. is connected

  494. directly

  495. to

  496. our

  497. daily

  498. choices

  499. and the

  500. way that

  501. we choose

  502. to think.

  503. That's

  504. quite a

  505. wake-up call,

  506. isn't it?

  507. Now you

  508. could think

  509. that's only

  510. 40%,

  511. or you

  512. could think

  513. actually,

  514. 40%,

  515. that's a

  516. huge chunk.

  517. If it is

  518. the case

  519. that the

  520. way we

  521. feel

  522. can be

  523. changed,

  524. 40%,

  525. that's a

  526. massive,

  527. massive slab

  528. of our

  529. mood.

  530. can be

  531. changed

  532. by the

  533. way we

  534. choose to

  535. think.

  536. Boy,

  537. that's

  538. huge.

  539. That's

  540. huge.

  541. So,

  542. with that

  543. in mind,

  544. what might

  545. it be

  546. about the

  547. Christian

  548. gospel,

  549. what might

  550. it be

  551. that may

  552. stand in

  553. stark

  554. contradiction

  555. to our

  556. circumstances

  557. and how

  558. we would

  559. feel about

  560. things

  561. otherwise,

  562. what might

  563. it be

  564. that we

  565. can bring

  566. to bear

  567. on ourselves

  568. and on

  569. our

  570. moods?

  571. Well,

  572. I took

  573. my time

  574. getting to

  575. it,

  576. but it's

  577. here I

  578. want to

  579. turn to

  580. the reading

  581. from Luke's

  582. gospel that

  583. Haraline read

  584. to us just

  585. now.

  586. And the

  587. reason we

  588. chose this

  589. particular

  590. passage,

  591. and you

  592. might be

  593. thinking,

  594. what on

  595. earth has

  596. this got

  597. to do

  598. with joy?

  599. Because we've

  600. got the

  601. story of

  602. Jesus who

  603. sends out

  604. his disciples,

  605. they come

  606. back,

  607. they're

  608. saying,

  609. isn't this

  610. amazing,

  611. Lord,

  612. that even

  613. the demons

  614. submit under

  615. your name

  616. and your

  617. authority,

  618. isn't this

  619. great,

  620. we're

  621. seeing

  622. healings

  623. going on,

  624. this is

  625. absolutely

  626. amazing,

  627. and then

  628. Jesus responds

  629. to it,

  630. what's that

  631. got to do

  632. with joy?

  633. This is

  634. what it's

  635. got to

  636. do with

  637. joy.

  638. In the

  639. gospels,

  640. this is

  641. reckoned

  642. to be

  643. the only

  644. incident

  645. recorded

  646. where we

  647. see joy

  648. in Jesus.

  649. Now,

  650. of course,

  651. we can

  652. point to

  653. other places

  654. where there's

  655. references to

  656. it indirectly,

  657. for example,

  658. in John's

  659. gospel,

  660. John 15,

  661. where Jesus

  662. is praying

  663. that my

  664. joy may

  665. be in

  666. you.

  667. But this

  668. is the

  669. only actual

  670. incident where

  671. we see

  672. Jesus

  673. rejoicing,

  674. and it is

  675. specifically

  676. stated that

  677. he was

  678. full of

  679. joy.

  680. Now,

  681. that's

  682. interesting

  683. because three

  684. times we're

  685. told that

  686. Jesus wept,

  687. and yet

  688. only one

  689. incident in

  690. Matthew,

  691. Mark,

  692. Luke,

  693. and John

  694. where we're

  695. told specifically

  696. and explicitly

  697. that Jesus

  698. was full

  699. of joy

  700. and was

  701. rejoicing.

  702. I don't

  703. think that's

  704. any accident.

  705. There must

  706. be a reason

  707. why it is

  708. singled out.

  709. So what

  710. might that

  711. reason be?

  712. Well,

  713. think of the

  714. context.

  715. Jesus'

  716. disciples,

  717. and there's

  718. 70,

  719. 72 of

  720. them,

  721. come back

  722. and are

  723. talking about

  724. all the

  725. amazing things

  726. that have

  727. been happening.

  728. but Jesus

  729. says to

  730. them,

  731. do not

  732. rejoice that

  733. the spirits

  734. submit to

  735. you.

  736. In other

  737. words,

  738. don't make

  739. your source

  740. of joy

  741. the practical

  742. things that

  743. are going

  744. on,

  745. even if

  746. they are

  747. amazing.

  748. But,

  749. he says,

  750. rejoice

  751. that your

  752. names are

  753. written in

  754. heaven.

  755. And then

  756. we're told

  757. that Jesus,

  758. full of joy,

  759. and the

  760. Holy Spirit

  761. said,

  762. I praise

  763. you,

  764. Father,

  765. Lord of

  766. heaven and

  767. earth.

  768. You see,

  769. it's not

  770. what we

  771. do,

  772. even if

  773. it's amazing

  774. Christian

  775. ministry,

  776. even if

  777. you go

  778. off and

  779. you pray

  780. for people

  781. and they

  782. are healed,

  783. Jesus says

  784. that's

  785. nothing.

  786. Don't

  787. rejoice over

  788. that.

  789. It is

  790. nothing by

  791. comparison

  792. to the

  793. fact that

  794. your names

  795. are written

  796. in heaven.

  797. In other

  798. words,

  799. it's your

  800. identity.

  801. It's who

  802. you are

  803. in Christ.

  804. Now,

  805. I've already

  806. told you

  807. several times,

  808. I'll say it

  809. again in case

  810. you haven't

  811. gone,

  812. I struggle

  813. with joy.

  814. There are

  815. times when

  816. I feel

  817. down,

  818. I feel

  819. low,

  820. and I

  821. feel,

  822. where is

  823. this joy?

  824. How can

  825. I get

  826. it?

  827. But

  828. there's

  829. something

  830. about

  831. Christian

  832. identity

  833. that I

  834. find,

  835. even in

  836. those

  837. hardest

  838. moments,

  839. I sense

  840. it's when

  841. I begin

  842. to connect

  843. with that

  844. truth and

  845. think about

  846. it,

  847. that even

  848. when life

  849. may be at

  850. its worst,

  851. you know,

  852. that doesn't

  853. go away.

  854. There is

  855. always that

  856. thing there

  857. in our

  858. identity

  859. as Christians

  860. that gives

  861. us joy.

  862. Back to

  863. C.S.

  864. Lewis'

  865. yearning,

  866. that sense

  867. of longing,

  868. no matter what

  869. circumstances might

  870. be like,

  871. no matter how

  872. we might be

  873. feeling emotionally,

  874. when we come

  875. back to that

  876. truth,

  877. that our names

  878. are written in

  879. heaven,

  880. that God

  881. loves us,

  882. that you are

  883. a child of

  884. God,

  885. it is

  886. something that

  887. nothing can

  888. take that

  889. away,

  890. nothing.

  891. One final

  892. story.

  893. It's a true

  894. story.

  895. In the late

  896. 1930s,

  897. a man called

  898. John Blandford

  899. walked into

  900. a library

  901. in New York.

  902. He was going

  903. through the

  904. books on

  905. the shelves,

  906. pulling them

  907. out and

  908. browsing through

  909. them,

  910. when he

  911. noticed in

  912. one particular

  913. book on

  914. the fly

  915. leaf,

  916. there was

  917. a signature.

  918. Somebody had

  919. written her

  920. name.

  921. The woman

  922. was called

  923. Hollis

  924. Maynell.

  925. And not

  926. only did it

  927. have her

  928. name,

  929. it had her

  930. address.

  931. Well, he

  932. borrowed the

  933. book and he

  934. kept looking

  935. at this and

  936. his curiosity

  937. got the

  938. better of

  939. him.

  940. He eventually

  941. wrote to

  942. Hollis

  943. Maynell at

  944. the address.

  945. A few

  946. weeks passed

  947. and he

  948. had a

  949. reply.

  950. To cut

  951. a long

  952. story short,

  953. this led

  954. to a

  955. friendship.

  956. They

  957. became pen

  958. pals and

  959. they wrote

  960. to one

  961. another.

  962. Eventually,

  963. the Second

  964. World War

  965. broke out

  966. and he

  967. was called

  968. up to

  969. go and

  970. fight in

  971. Europe.

  972. During

  973. that time,

  974. as a

  975. soldier,

  976. he continued

  977. to write,

  978. to exchange

  979. letters with

  980. Hollis

  981. Maynell.

  982. He

  983. realised

  984. over the

  985. months,

  986. he was

  987. becoming

  988. more and

  989. more attracted

  990. to this

  991. woman that

  992. he had

  993. never

  994. seen but

  995. only read

  996. her letters.

  997. He asked

  998. for her

  999. to send

  1000. him a

  1001. photo but

  1002. she refused

  1003. three times.

  1004. Eventually,

  1005. John Blanford

  1006. was on

  1007. leave one

  1008. Christmas and

  1009. so he wrote

  1010. to Hollis and

  1011. said,

  1012. is there any

  1013. possibility that

  1014. we could meet

  1015. up?

  1016. She wrote

  1017. back and

  1018. agreed.

  1019. And she

  1020. arranged,

  1021. she agreed

  1022. to meet

  1023. at Grand

  1024. Central Station

  1025. in New

  1026. York.

  1027. He asked

  1028. her,

  1029. how will

  1030. we recognise

  1031. one another?

  1032. He said,

  1033. I will be

  1034. wearing my

  1035. soldier's

  1036. uniform and

  1037. I'll be

  1038. holding a

  1039. copy of

  1040. that book

  1041. and I'll

  1042. hold it

  1043. in the

  1044. air.

  1045. But how

  1046. will I

  1047. recognise

  1048. you?

  1049. Hollis

  1050. wrote back

  1051. and said,

  1052. I will be

  1053. wearing a

  1054. red rose.

  1055. Now,

  1056. rather than

  1057. me try and

  1058. tell the

  1059. story,

  1060. let me

  1061. give it

  1062. to you

  1063. in the

  1064. words of

  1065. the man

  1066. himself.

  1067. Finally,

  1068. the day

  1069. came.

  1070. I walk

  1071. into Grand

  1072. Central Station.

  1073. There are

  1074. hundreds of

  1075. people milling

  1076. around.

  1077. I'm searching

  1078. for this

  1079. woman who

  1080. has captured

  1081. my heart

  1082. and suddenly

  1083. out of the

  1084. crowd steps

  1085. a young

  1086. woman.

  1087. She has

  1088. long fair

  1089. hair and

  1090. is dressed

  1091. in green.

  1092. It seemed

  1093. as if

  1094. springtime

  1095. was bursting

  1096. out of

  1097. her.

  1098. I was

  1099. captivated,

  1100. so captivated

  1101. I omitted

  1102. to notice

  1103. that she

  1104. was not

  1105. wearing a

  1106. rose.

  1107. She smiled

  1108. at me.

  1109. She jiggled

  1110. her hips

  1111. and as she

  1112. walked by

  1113. she looked

  1114. back and

  1115. said,

  1116. go in my

  1117. way,

  1118. soldier.

  1119. I was

  1120. about to

  1121. follow her

  1122. but suddenly

  1123. out of the

  1124. corner of

  1125. my eye

  1126. I saw

  1127. the woman

  1128. wearing

  1129. the rose.

  1130. she was

  1131. older,

  1132. much older

  1133. than I

  1134. had thought

  1135. she would

  1136. be.

  1137. She had

  1138. a little

  1139. knitted hat

  1140. on to

  1141. keep out

  1142. the cold

  1143. and a

  1144. long brown

  1145. overcoat

  1146. that made

  1147. its way

  1148. down to

  1149. sensible

  1150. flat brown

  1151. shoes.

  1152. She wore

  1153. little round

  1154. glasses and

  1155. carried a

  1156. silver tipped

  1157. cane.

  1158. I desperately

  1159. wanted to

  1160. go after

  1161. the young

  1162. woman in

  1163. green but

  1164. then I

  1165. thought,

  1166. no,

  1167. no,

  1168. this lady

  1169. has sustained

  1170. me through

  1171. the long

  1172. months of

  1173. the war.

  1174. This won't

  1175. be romance

  1176. but it

  1177. might be

  1178. something

  1179. deeper.

  1180. I did

  1181. not hesitate.

  1182. I walked

  1183. up to the

  1184. woman with

  1185. the rose

  1186. and said,

  1187. my name

  1188. is John

  1189. Blanford,

  1190. you must

  1191. be Hollis

  1192. Manel,

  1193. could I

  1194. take you

  1195. to dinner?

  1196. The elderly

  1197. lady half

  1198. smiled,

  1199. half scowled.

  1200. Young man,

  1201. she said,

  1202. I have no

  1203. idea what

  1204. all this

  1205. is about

  1206. but the

  1207. young woman

  1208. in green

  1209. who just

  1210. went by

  1211. begged me

  1212. to wear

  1213. this rose.

  1214. And she

  1215. said that

  1216. if you

  1217. were to

  1218. invite me

  1219. to dinner

  1220. she will

  1221. be waiting

  1222. for you

  1223. in the

  1224. big restaurant

  1225. across the

  1226. road.

  1227. Apparently,

  1228. young man,

  1229. it was

  1230. some kind

  1231. of test.

  1232. True story.

  1233. Now,

  1234. she may

  1235. have been

  1236. good looking

  1237. but boy

  1238. was she

  1239. clever.

  1240. You see,

  1241. she was

  1242. bright enough

  1243. to know

  1244. that though

  1245. she might

  1246. have been

  1247. very physically

  1248. attractive,

  1249. the time

  1250. would come

  1251. when looks

  1252. will pass.

  1253. She knew

  1254. and she

  1255. understood

  1256. that there

  1257. is something

  1258. far deeper,

  1259. far more

  1260. profound about

  1261. human relationships

  1262. than the

  1263. way that

  1264. we look.

  1265. She knew

  1266. that and

  1267. she prized

  1268. it.

  1269. When Jesus

  1270. says,

  1271. rejoice

  1272. because your

  1273. names are

  1274. written in

  1275. heaven,

  1276. he's talking

  1277. about a

  1278. relationship.

  1279. He's talking

  1280. about a

  1281. relationship

  1282. with one

  1283. that we

  1284. cannot see

  1285. now.

  1286. He's

  1287. talking about

  1288. a relationship

  1289. that is the

  1290. most important

  1291. relationship

  1292. that anybody

  1293. can ever

  1294. talk about

  1295. and ever

  1296. have.

  1297. He's talking

  1298. about a

  1299. relationship

  1300. that throughout

  1301. the course

  1302. of our lives

  1303. we will never

  1304. ever actually

  1305. see what

  1306. that other

  1307. party in

  1308. that relationship

  1309. looks like.

  1310. Why?

  1311. Because that

  1312. relationship,

  1313. and remember

  1314. it's the most

  1315. important one,

  1316. is hidden.

  1317. Hidden away

  1318. and out of

  1319. sight.

  1320. it's

  1321. precisely

  1322. because of

  1323. that,

  1324. that by

  1325. faith,

  1326. when we

  1327. just touch

  1328. on it,

  1329. just for a

  1330. moment,

  1331. we can

  1332. find joy

  1333. like nothing,

  1334. nothing else.
