  1. This morning we're in the last of our series looking at the fruit of the Spirit.

  2. Let me read to you from Galatians chapter 5.

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  3. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

  4. And it's self-control that we're thinking about this morning.

  5. There's a saying that you can't control the actions of others, but you can control your own actions.

  6. That's challenging and it's true.

  7. We need to ask ourselves the question, how easy is it, really, to control our own actions?

  8. Quick experiment.

  9. Remember, remain seated, but lift your right foot just a few inches above the ground and make circles in a clockwise direction.

  10. That's important.

  11. Clockwise direction.

  12. Now, I know a number of people are listening to this on the podcast and if that's you, you can do this at home.

  13. Please don't do it if you're driving right now.

  14. Okay, so you've got a clockwise direction with your right foot.

  15. Now, raise your right hand in the air and with it, I want you to draw a great big number six.

  16. What happens to your right foot?

  17. Now, I think if you practice that long enough, you probably could train your brain to coordinate that one.

  18. But, you know, it's that automatic response, isn't it?

  19. It changes direction.

  20. We think we have control.

  21. We'd love to have control.

  22. We live in an age where we feel that we can control just about anything.

  23. We can order anything we want anytime, wherever we are in the world and have it delivered to us as quickly as we can.

  24. We get very upset when we feel that we no longer have that kind of control that we feel that we have a legitimate claim to.

  25. Now, controlling the self is not that straightforward.

  26. And in order for us to think about that properly, we have to think more widely about the Christian understanding,

  27. the biblical understanding of the human condition.

  28. In other words, what it is to be a human being.

  29. A very, very old-fashioned word and a word that we probably don't use much in everyday language

  30. because it sounds unfashionable and out of date, but it's the word sin.

  31. And that word is so important if we are to understand properly what the Bible teaches us about what it is to be a human being.

  32. Forget notions of lists of things that we think are wrong.

  33. That's not really ultimately what that word sin refers to.

  34. Rather, it refers to that thing within us that continually moves us in the directions that lead to destruction

  35. and leads us in a direction that is not good.

  36. That's what it is.

  37. It's a power.

  38. It's a bias within the human heart.

  39. Every single one of us, every human being alive has some sense of right and wrong.

  40. No matter how we live that out, we all have some sort of sense of what's right and what's wrong.

  41. Sure, there are grey areas that we can discuss.

  42. We have disagreements among ourselves as Christians, but the point is, as human, it's fundamental to what it is to be a living human being,

  43. to have a kind of a moral compass.

  44. We might not always do what is right, but we have a sense of what is right.

  45. It's part of what defines us.

  46. And yet, no one's perfect.

  47. Now, that may sound like an obvious cliche, but why?

  48. Why are we not perfect?

  49. It's puzzling, isn't it?

  50. Why we should all have this instinct as to there being something called right and something that's wrong

  51. and all the difference between those two things.

  52. And yet, we would really probably want to do what's right, but we don't.

  53. And no matter how hard we try and set out genuinely to do the right thing, we don't.

  54. It's a pattern that recurs in every time and place throughout human history.

  55. It unites all of us.

  56. We're not perfect.

  57. That, to me, is one of the most compelling things, one of the most compelling things,

  58. about the whole Christian faith, because of the way in which it understands the reality of what it is to be a human being.

  59. There's no pretending anything.

  60. There's no sweeping anything under the carpet.

  61. You know, we have this mysterious bias, this gravitation to do the wrong thing,

  62. even though we know what is right and even though we want to do what is right.

  63. Sometimes we can find even the harder that we try to do the right thing,

  64. we seem to get it wrong and trip up over and over again.

  65. An illustration that I've heard and have used many times is,

  66. imagine if you're going into the shopping, to do shopping in a supermarket,

  67. and you get one of those really big trolleys.

  68. Sometimes you put your pound or your little token in or whatever,

  69. you pull it away and then you walk through,

  70. and you soon notice that one of the wheels is stuck or bent or warped,

  71. and it starts a judder, and it's a strain to push it straight forward.

  72. So you're walking forward like this, and it keeps veering off to one direction.

  73. You want to go straight ahead, it wants to go right.

  74. So you have to push it. It takes effort.

  75. You really, really want to go to the fruit and veg,

  76. and yet it insists on heading for the real ale and the pastries.

  77. Yeah?

  78. So you've got to work at it.

  79. It's that bias that even though you've got in your mind the direction you wanted to take it in,

  80. it insists on veering off.

  81. That is a kind of an image as to what the power, the gravitational pull,

  82. the bias that we refer to when we use that word sin, is.

  83. And throughout the scriptures, we find this idea develops,

  84. that we live not in a spiritual vacuum,

  85. but everything has a spiritual dimension to it.

  86. And so the language that is deployed, particularly in the New Testament,

  87. is that of a battle, that we are fighting a spiritual battle.

  88. A lot of the time we forget that, we're not aware of it,

  89. we're not tuned into it, but that's the reality.

  90. So every choice, every decision comes loaded with that spirituality.

  91. Self-control then matters,

  92. because if we don't get a handle on ourselves,

  93. it's too easy just to veer off in the wrong direction.

  94. Even though we, inside ourselves, know what's right and wrong,

  95. and we want to do the right thing,

  96. we find that so hard.

  97. The other thing that we need to know about self-control,

  98. is that when we think about it,

  99. we probably naturally think that it's all about avoiding doing bad stuff.

  100. That self-control is about, you know,

  101. don't do this and don't do that.

  102. But self-control applies as much to positive things

  103. that we should do,

  104. as much as it does to negative things that we want to avoid.

  105. For example, praying.

  106. How often do we find in our experience

  107. that we just don't feel like praying,

  108. or we struggle to get started?

  109. I think of loads of times

  110. when I find that it's a real effort

  111. to actually motivate myself

  112. to get down to doing some serious praying,

  113. or reading the Bible.

  114. I can find all sorts of reasons not to,

  115. and I find it's a real struggle to get there.

  116. So that, again, is a positive thing,

  117. but it requires self-control.

  118. Once it's got started,

  119. I often find, actually, it's great.

  120. Where do we go?

  121. But sometimes overcoming that initial hurdle,

  122. again, is a challenge for self-control.

  123. So, self-control applies not only to what we're trying to avoid doing,

  124. but also to the positive things

  125. that we're trying to embrace and to do.

  126. So, let's get down to the story, then.

  127. Let's be frank about this.

  128. It's a corker of a story.

  129. It's a juicy one.

  130. It's extreme.

  131. King David,

  132. the God's chosen one,

  133. hero

  134. of the people of Israel,

  135. is in his palace,

  136. and late one afternoon,

  137. he gets up,

  138. he looks out the window,

  139. and he clocks

  140. a beautiful-looking woman.

  141. He obviously watches her for a while,

  142. thinks about it,

  143. gives instruction

  144. for her to be brought to him.

  145. He's told that she's married

  146. to somebody.

  147. That doesn't stop him

  148. having sex with her

  149. and getting her pregnant.

  150. When he finds

  151. that she is pregnant,

  152. he tries to cover it up.

  153. So he hatches this plan.

  154. He says,

  155. bring her husband back from battle,

  156. and I'll give him

  157. all the royal treatment

  158. and then send him off

  159. with his wife,

  160. and hopefully,

  161. in a few months' time,

  162. everyone will think

  163. that it's his child.

  164. Except that when the soldier,

  165. the husband,

  166. comes home,

  167. he's too much integrity

  168. to do that.

  169. He says,

  170. I'm not going to go home

  171. and live in luxury like that

  172. when all our soldiers

  173. are out there

  174. risking their life.

  175. No,

  176. I'm going to sleep

  177. with the rest of the servants

  178. this evening.

  179. So he does.

  180. Two nights,

  181. David tries this

  182. and it doesn't work.

  183. So off he goes back to battle

  184. and he gives instruction instead

  185. to put him on the front line

  186. of the battle

  187. where all the action is

  188. so that he'll get killed off

  189. and that's what happens.

  190. Now,

  191. when we listen to this story,

  192. it's very easy for us

  193. to think,

  194. well,

  195. of course,

  196. that's really extreme.

  197. You know,

  198. and it seems such a huge gap

  199. between David's actions

  200. and the place where we are

  201. that it can be almost hard

  202. to relate to

  203. and think,

  204. yeah,

  205. that's one thing

  206. but if we're trying

  207. to get a gauge

  208. of what self-control means

  209. by learning from such extreme actions,

  210. well,

  211. it's too hard.

  212. We need to start

  213. with something

  214. that's closer

  215. to our own experience.

  216. let's not think that.

  217. It's a dangerous thing

  218. if we begin to think

  219. this actually

  220. isn't anywhere close

  221. to being on our radar

  222. because if we do so,

  223. we misunderstand

  224. the reality

  225. that what we have here

  226. is a universal principle.

  227. things start small

  228. and become big

  229. and they can do so

  230. without us actually

  231. being conscious

  232. that that is what

  233. is taking place.

  234. You see,

  235. this is how bad things

  236. can escalate

  237. into terrible things

  238. if we're not mindful

  239. of self-control.

  240. Remember,

  241. David was God's anointed.

  242. He had had some

  243. exceptionally

  244. profound

  245. spiritual experience

  246. of God.

  247. If you'd have asked him

  248. back then

  249. at an earlier point

  250. if he would ever

  251. end up doing

  252. what eventually

  253. he did end up doing,

  254. he would have not

  255. believed you.

  256. You see,

  257. sin escalates.

  258. Bad stuff escalates.

  259. It started

  260. with a thought

  261. when he clocked

  262. Bathsheba

  263. in the shower.

  264. But it didn't

  265. stay as a thought.

  266. Another illustration,

  267. and it's one

  268. that I have used

  269. before,

  270. but it's

  271. the best one

  272. I know

  273. for,

  274. I think,

  275. helping us

  276. to understand

  277. and engage

  278. what I'm trying

  279. to talk about here.

  280. There is a way

  281. in which Eskimos

  282. go about the business

  283. of catching wolves.

  284. they take a dagger

  285. and they get

  286. another animal

  287. that they've killed

  288. and they dip

  289. the dagger

  290. in the blood

  291. of that dead animal

  292. and freeze it.

  293. And then they do it

  294. again,

  295. freezing another layer

  296. of animal's blood

  297. around that dagger.

  298. They repeat this process

  299. over and over

  300. and over again

  301. until they freeze

  302. layer upon layer

  303. upon layer

  304. to eventually

  305. they've got

  306. a block of ice,

  307. red ice,

  308. frozen animal blood,

  309. in the middle of which

  310. is a dagger.

  311. They put that thing

  312. in the middle of the snow

  313. and they walk away

  314. and they leave it overnight.

  315. Wolf comes along

  316. and catches a sniff

  317. of the blood.

  318. It likes the smell.

  319. So it begins

  320. to lick

  321. at the

  322. frozen blood.

  323. The more it gets,

  324. the more it craves.

  325. The more it craves,

  326. the more it gets,

  327. the more it gets,

  328. the more it craves.

  329. It cannot

  330. satisfy its craving

  331. until it licks

  332. away and away

  333. and away,

  334. licking layer

  335. upon layer

  336. away

  337. from this knife

  338. until eventually

  339. the ice

  340. has gone,

  341. the wolf

  342. has consumed

  343. all of that

  344. frozen animal blood

  345. yet it still

  346. cannot get enough

  347. of it

  348. and so it licks

  349. away,

  350. this time its tongue

  351. is lashing away

  352. on the edge

  353. of that bare knife.

  354. Eventually

  355. it drowns

  356. in its own blood.

  357. You're looking forward

  358. to your next

  359. strawberry split

  360. ice cream now,

  361. aren't you?

  362. That's the subtlety

  363. in which these

  364. things work.

  365. They get a hold

  366. of us

  367. at a very small

  368. level.

  369. Then,

  370. without us knowing,

  371. they escalate.

  372. This is why

  373. this story,

  374. as extreme

  375. as it may be,

  376. teaches us

  377. some universal

  378. human principles,

  379. spiritual realities

  380. from which

  381. none of us

  382. are immune.

  383. you see,

  384. the human mind

  385. is something

  386. of a mental

  387. greenhouse.

  388. In verse 2,

  389. we see David

  390. walking around

  391. on his palace

  392. and he sees

  393. Bathsheba.

  394. A thought process

  395. is then set

  396. in motion.

  397. Somewhere

  398. between his

  399. observation

  400. and his

  401. actions

  402. things

  403. lie a decision.

  404. And it may not

  405. be easy to pinpoint

  406. exactly where that

  407. took place,

  408. but it took place.

  409. Somewhere between

  410. our thoughts

  411. and our actions,

  412. there lies that

  413. point of decision.

  414. And self-control

  415. is about

  416. learning to

  417. discern

  418. where those

  419. points are.

  420. St. Paul in

  421. the New Testament

  422. talks about

  423. the dynamic

  424. of taking

  425. every thought

  426. captive,

  427. being aware

  428. of the thought

  429. processes

  430. that are going

  431. on inside us

  432. and growing

  433. on inside us.

  434. But notice

  435. actually

  436. where

  437. all of this

  438. starts.

  439. It doesn't

  440. start

  441. at the

  442. point

  443. where

  444. Bathsheba

  445. is brought

  446. before David.

  447. It doesn't

  448. even start

  449. at the

  450. point

  451. where

  452. he

  453. tells

  454. his

  455. officials

  456. to

  457. bring her

  458. to him.

  459. It doesn't

  460. even start

  461. at the

  462. moment he

  463. sees her.

  464. It starts

  465. much earlier

  466. in verse

  467. one.

  468. In the

  469. spring of

  470. the year,

  471. the time

  472. when kings

  473. go out

  474. to battle,

  475. David sent

  476. Joab with

  477. his officers

  478. and all

  479. Israel with

  480. him.

  481. They ravaged

  482. the Ammonites

  483. and besieged

  484. Rabbah.

  485. But David

  486. remained in

  487. Jerusalem.

  488. It was the

  489. time of the

  490. year when

  491. kings would

  492. normally be

  493. expected to

  494. go out to

  495. battle.

  496. But David

  497. for some

  498. reason, and

  499. we're not

  500. told why,

  501. doesn't.

  502. He stays.

  503. He's in the

  504. wrong place.

  505. And had

  506. it actually

  507. been in the

  508. right place,

  509. then none

  510. of this

  511. could have

  512. even begun

  513. to emerge.

  514. And a

  515. question, and

  516. I want to

  517. suggest that

  518. this is the

  519. most universal

  520. question that

  521. we can put

  522. to ourselves

  523. when we

  524. read this

  525. passage, is

  526. what is our

  527. wrong place

  528. for whatever

  529. it is that

  530. we may

  531. struggle with

  532. when it

  533. comes to

  534. self-control?

  535. what's the

  536. wrong place?

  537. What places

  538. do we find

  539. ourselves most

  540. vulnerable when

  541. we're trying to

  542. control those

  543. things that will

  544. pull us in the

  545. wrong direction?

  546. Now for each

  547. of us that will

  548. be a different

  549. thing.

  550. I'm going to

  551. just describe

  552. just a few

  553. which give a

  554. hint of the

  555. sort of things

  556. that 20

  557. years as a

  558. minister now

  559. I've listened

  560. to people's

  561. stories, things

  562. where things

  563. have gone wrong

  564. in people's

  565. lives and

  566. brokenness and

  567. the sort of

  568. picture I get

  569. as I think

  570. back over many

  571. conversations over

  572. the years that

  573. I've heard, and

  574. again if you're

  575. listening to this

  576. on the podcast,

  577. wherever you are

  578. right now, ask

  579. yourself the

  580. question, are

  581. you in the

  582. wrong place as

  583. you're listening?

  584. If a struggle

  585. area for us

  586. is gossiping.

  587. If it's

  588. something that

  589. actually, yeah,

  590. we do but

  591. perhaps we only

  592. recognise it

  593. after we've

  594. done it and

  595. we've been

  596. talking with

  597. a group, make

  598. that an area

  599. of prayer and

  600. next time you're

  601. with others and

  602. the conversation

  603. begins to pick

  604. up on the

  605. subject of

  606. people who

  607. aren't with

  608. that group at

  609. that point in

  610. time, walk

  611. away, just

  612. get out of

  613. that place.

  614. If your

  615. wrong place is

  616. that you're

  617. just spending

  618. too much time

  619. on the

  620. internet, and

  621. this is so

  622. much harder

  623. now because

  624. there was a

  625. time not so

  626. long ago when

  627. to be on the

  628. internet then

  629. sat in front of

  630. a computer, it

  631. doesn't now

  632. because we have

  633. handheld devices,

  634. it's not quite as

  635. easy, it's more

  636. challenging.

  637. But if you

  638. find that you're

  639. spending too

  640. much time, that

  641. that's your

  642. wrong place,

  643. whether you're

  644. spending too

  645. much time or

  646. whether you're

  647. on the wrong

  648. kind of sites

  649. and engaged in

  650. the wrong kind

  651. of activities,

  652. then impose some

  653. kind of barrier

  654. on yourself.

  655. Switch off your

  656. device, put it

  657. away in the

  658. drawer, turn off

  659. your modem,

  660. whatever it may

  661. be, but get

  662. out of that

  663. wrong place

  664. before destruction

  665. begins.

  666. If you find that

  667. you're drinking

  668. too much of the

  669. wrong stuff too

  670. much, or eating

  671. too much of the

  672. wrong stuff too

  673. much, too

  674. frequently, the

  675. wrong place is

  676. not necessarily

  677. wherever that may

  678. be during the

  679. week, it might

  680. be far earlier

  681. than that.

  682. Maybe you need

  683. to keep less of

  684. it indoors, so

  685. that it's harder

  686. to access, so

  687. that you're not

  688. put in the wrong

  689. place.

  690. Maybe if you're

  691. spending too much

  692. and you're finding

  693. yourself in crippling

  694. debt, then perhaps

  695. being in the wrong

  696. place means being

  697. somewhere with a

  698. credit card on you,

  699. leave it at home

  700. and use cash

  701. instead.

  702. Get out of that

  703. wrong place.

  704. Maybe if you're

  705. getting into a

  706. relationship that

  707. actually is not a

  708. healthy one, it's an

  709. inappropriate one, then

  710. you need to ask

  711. yourself, at what

  712. point are you in the

  713. place where you're

  714. getting closer to that

  715. other person?

  716. Maybe if it's a

  717. situation where you

  718. work away from home

  719. lots, where you're

  720. staying away from

  721. home lots, only you

  722. will be able to answer

  723. that question.

  724. What is the wrong

  725. place?

  726. Name it and get out

  727. of it.

  728. Run without

  729. dignity.

  730. But also, just to

  731. go back to where we

  732. started, we're

  733. saying that self-control

  734. is not only about

  735. avoiding things that are

  736. destructive, about

  737. staying away from

  738. some things.

  739. Self-control is as

  740. much about embracing

  741. things positively.

  742. So if you're

  743. struggling to pray, if

  744. you're struggling to

  745. read scripture, if

  746. you're struggling to

  747. discipline yourself in

  748. that, look for a good

  749. place and a good time.

  750. Perhaps there's a

  751. particular place where

  752. you can go and walk

  753. and pray.

  754. Perhaps there's a

  755. particular time in the

  756. day, perhaps there's a

  757. particular room in the

  758. house, a place where

  759. you can sit that will

  760. enable you to still

  761. yourself and to spend

  762. that time in focused

  763. prayer.

  764. But finally, as we

  765. come to pray now, I

  766. want to say that if

  767. anything I've said

  768. this morning is

  769. about, suggests any

  770. kind of guilt trip, it's

  771. not.

  772. Well, it kind of is in

  773. that there is such a

  774. thing as creative guilt.

  775. There's destructive

  776. guilt as well and

  777. there's all the

  778. difference between the

  779. two.

  780. This is not about

  781. destructive guilt, it

  782. is about creative guilt.

  783. Creative guilt is guilt

  784. that actually motivates

  785. us to change in a

  786. helpful way.

  787. And if we're in that

  788. place where we really

  789. do want that to happen,

  790. then that's great.

  791. Because we need to

  792. remember from this

  793. story, and I think

  794. this is perhaps the

  795. most powerful thing

  796. about this story of

  797. David and Bathsheba,

  798. that it teaches us,

  799. is that even not if,

  800. but when we mess up,

  801. when we get it wrong,

  802. when we've got

  803. ourselves into the

  804. wrong place and then

  805. some, we can always

  806. come back.

  807. Because God meets you

  808. in that place, and he

  809. doesn't leave you in

  810. that place, he brings

  811. you back to a fresh

  812. start and a new

  813. beginning.

  814. Because as horrendous,

  815. as horrific, as

  816. assorted as David's

  817. actions were, not only

  818. did he commit adultery,

  819. but he then tried to

  820. cover it up and then

  821. eventually got someone

  822. killed.

  823. Even he found

  824. redemption and

  825. forgiveness.

  826. And if he in that

  827. story can find

  828. redemption and

  829. forgiveness and a

  830. new beginning,

  831. then so can we.

  832. Because out of this

  833. experience, David came

  834. to write one of the

  835. most famous psalms,

  836. Psalm 51.

  837. And I'm going to read

  838. that psalm now,

  839. because it so

  840. powerfully expresses

  841. words of confession,

  842. words which express

  843. that, yes, we get it

  844. wrong, we're broken

  845. beings, but we depend

  846. on the grace of God.

  847. David did.

  848. David knew that he was

  849. forgiven and so can

  850. we.

  851. So I'm going to read to

  852. you from Psalm 51

  853. and it was written as a

  854. prayer, so I'm going to

  855. read it as a prayer.

  856. Let's take some time

  857. now just to bring

  858. ourselves before God.

  859. As we come to the end

  860. of this series,

  861. thinking about self-control,

  862. let's just bring ourselves

  863. before God as we are

  864. because we can come no

  865. other way and ask for

  866. him to help us where we

  867. struggle, wherever that

  868. may be and whatever that

  869. may mean.

  870. Psalm 51 says,

  871. have mercy on me, O God,

  872. according to your steadfast

  873. love, according to your

  874. abundant mercy, blot out my

  875. transgressions, wash me

  876. thoroughly from my iniquity and

  877. cleanse me from my sin.

  878. For I know my transgressions and

  879. my sin is ever before me.

  880. Against you, you alone have I

  881. sinned and have done what is

  882. evil in your sight.

  883. Indeed, I was born guilty,

  884. a sinner when my mother

  885. conceived me, even.

  886. You desire truth in the

  887. inward being, therefore teach

  888. me wisdom in my secret heart.

  889. Purge me and I shall be

  890. clean, wash me and I shall be

  891. whiter than snow.

  892. Let me hear joy and gladness,

  893. let the bones that you have

  894. crushed rejoice.

  895. Hide your face from my sins

  896. and blot out all my iniquity.

  897. Please, create in me a clean

  898. heart, O God, and put a new

  899. and right spirit within me.

  900. Do not cast me away from your

  901. presence and do not take your

  902. Holy Spirit from me.

  903. Restore to me the joy of your

  904. salvation and sustain in me a

  905. willing spirit.

  906. Then I will teach transgressors

  907. your ways and sinners will

  908. return to you.

  909. Deliver me from bloodshed, O God,

  910. O God of my salvation.

  911. And my tongue will sing aloud of

  912. your deliverance.

  913. Lord, open my lips and my mouth

  914. will declare your praise.

  915. For you have no delight in

  916. sacrifice.

  917. If I were to give you a burnt

  918. offering, you would not be

  919. pleased.

  920. The sacrifice acceptable to God

  921. is a broken spirit.

  922. A broken and contrite heart, O God,

  923. you will not despise.

  924. Father...
