  1. so my question to you this morning is how much hope did you come to church with this morning

  2. I've been having a lot of conversations about climate change I've been following

  3. all the political debates and needless to say I've not been left with a lot of hope

  4. you know it it does seem like a mess doesn't it it seems like an unsettling mess I don't know

  5. who to put my trust in I don't know to where to put my faith what hope do we have there are many

  6. things in life that seem really unsettling that leave us thinking there is no hope but we as

  7. Christians we are people who have a hope and I'd like you to keep that passage open if you have it

  8. so we can keep following it as we as we go through the passage we've heard this morning it shouts

  9. of hope and what is this hope and and where do we find it well if we look at verse four it says

  10. for everything that was written in the past was written to teach us so that through endurance

  11. and the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope so two things there what was written

  12. and the scriptures and to Paul these would have been teachings that weren't just you know an

  13. intellectual exercise he wasn't reading the scriptures to become cleverer you know these were

  14. teachings that were defining how he defining how he lived his life he wanted to be formed and shaped

  15. by what he was reading and what he was reading was giving him hope we get an insight into Paul's

  16. relationship with scripture here and Paul's relationship with scripture is intimate he wasn't you know

  17. every now and again picking it up and and having a little read just because he had to this was the

  18. very power of God breaking into his life through the written words something about these texts that

  19. provided him with hope and Paul had a really challenging life in all sorts of different ways but something

  20. about this text that he's talking about enabled endurance and actually enabled encouragement as well

  21. now Paul's scripture that he's talking about here would have been the Jewish Bible that we know as the

  22. Old Testament and in the Old Testament we have this incredible story of how the Hebrew people found a hope

  23. in Yahweh in God and in the New Testament that we have today we have this exact same narrative

  24. but this time all people have a hope in God through Jesus Christ ultimately what Paul is pointing to in his letter

  25. to the Romans it's repeated over and over again just if you look at verses 5 6 7 and 8 Jesus Christ

  26. Christ Jesus in all that he's achieved for us on the cross gives us hope the fact that he raised

  27. to life gives us hope a hope that is life changing a hope that we can build our lives upon to be able to weather

  28. whatever storm comes in our lives in verses 8 to 12 Paul talks about the Jews and the Gentiles quoting various Old Testament

  29. passages and he's stressing to the predominantly Jewish church in Rome that this hope is for everyone and not just them

  30. so verses 7 8 and 9 are key here the Jews in the Roman church weren't convinced that the Gentiles deserve Jesus

  31. because after all he was he was a Jew he was one of them

  32. but Paul doesn't want division within the church and explains to the Jewish people that they were accepted by Jesus in their sinful state

  33. so it's no different for the Gentiles

  34. you know all fall short of God's standard

  35. and in a strange way that's great news for us Gentiles

  36. but it's also a great challenge for us as the church

  37. so we as a church are made up of all sorts of different people

  38. with different cultures and different opinions

  39. we all have different stories and different struggles

  40. but it's that message of acceptance

  41. that Paul really pushes in this passage

  42. look at verse 7

  43. as Christ accepted us

  44. we need to be able to accept others

  45. despite any differences we may have

  46. and if you think about how damaging

  47. divisiveness is

  48. how messy

  49. disagreements can become

  50. you know even over the simplest of things

  51. you wouldn't believe the kind of things

  52. the church destroys itself

  53. arguing over

  54. but it's just a reflection of our culture isn't it

  55. we live

  56. in incredibly

  57. divisive

  58. times

  59. people just can't seem to cope

  60. with any sort of difference

  61. you know even

  62. within God's people

  63. and as a church

  64. we need

  65. that spirit of unity

  66. in verse 5

  67. that enables us

  68. to accept one another

  69. you know despite our differences

  70. regardless of who we are

  71. or

  72. or what we think

  73. what we believe

  74. you know our stance on Brexit

  75. you know our political party

  76. that we're voting for

  77. our unity

  78. is found in that hope

  79. that we have in Christ

  80. so then accept one another

  81. as Christ accepted us

  82. that is God's grace

  83. you know enabling us

  84. to say to each other

  85. I disagree with you

  86. but I choose to love

  87. I choose to honour

  88. I choose to respect

  89. you

  90. so that God may be glorified

  91. but what does this passage say

  92. about the effects

  93. of this hope

  94. on our personal lives

  95. so I want to tell you about

  96. a roller coaster

  97. at Alton Towers

  98. that gives you the effect

  99. like you're feeling of flying

  100. well you sit in this chair

  101. and these straps come down

  102. and lock you in place

  103. before being tilted horizontally

  104. and now you know

  105. before you even get on this ride

  106. there's information

  107. all around the place

  108. saying how safe

  109. this ride is

  110. and you can imagine

  111. how reassuring that is

  112. before getting on the ride itself

  113. but I know

  114. when this thing gets going

  115. I'm going to be flung

  116. this way

  117. and that way

  118. round and round

  119. and it is going to be fast

  120. and the only security

  121. you know

  122. the only guarantee

  123. that I had

  124. that I wouldn't die

  125. was in this chair

  126. holding me

  127. secure

  128. that was my only hope

  129. in getting me through

  130. safely

  131. and out

  132. the other side

  133. and I want to liken

  134. this experience

  135. to Christ

  136. in the sense that

  137. life is one heck

  138. of a roller coaster

  139. isn't it

  140. you know

  141. with circumstances

  142. way

  143. way beyond

  144. our control

  145. we do get flung

  146. this way

  147. and that way

  148. emotionally

  149. and physically

  150. at very uncomfortable

  151. speeds often

  152. we desperately need

  153. the hope

  154. you know

  155. that chair

  156. to hold us secure

  157. to endure the ride

  158. and like this

  159. specially designed

  160. chair

  161. Christ

  162. through his victory

  163. over sin

  164. is the one

  165. that holds us

  166. safe

  167. as we put

  168. our faith

  169. in him

  170. he is the only one

  171. we can

  172. trust

  173. totally

  174. you know

  175. because through the scriptures

  176. he has proved himself

  177. over

  178. and over

  179. again

  180. and the remarkable

  181. thing is that

  182. this hope

  183. not only will get us

  184. safely out the other

  185. side

  186. but will allow us

  187. to potentially

  188. even enjoy

  189. the ride

  190. as we go

  191. this is the perspective

  192. hope in Jesus

  193. gives us

  194. this is the

  195. resurrection

  196. hope

  197. perspective

  198. that we have

  199. this is the power

  200. of the Holy Spirit

  201. working

  202. within our lives

  203. giving us strength

  204. now

  205. beyond anything

  206. of our means

  207. and that is amazing

  208. isn't it

  209. once you know

  210. that you aren't

  211. going to fall out

  212. your hope

  213. is secure

  214. and there's a

  215. totally bizarre

  216. nonsensical

  217. feeling

  218. of peace

  219. and joy

  220. on that rollercoaster

  221. yeah you know

  222. you're going to feel

  223. like you're upside down

  224. 30 metres high

  225. above the ground

  226. at some points

  227. but despite this

  228. through the power

  229. of the Holy Spirit

  230. you can experience

  231. peace

  232. and joy

  233. and Paul

  234. speaks here

  235. of being given

  236. endurance

  237. and encouragement

  238. through reading

  239. about the faithfulness

  240. and the goodness

  241. and the love

  242. of God

  243. whatever this world

  244. throws at you

  245. put all of your trust

  246. in him

  247. and know

  248. that you are held

  249. secure

  250. by this hope

  251. that we have in Christ

  252. and then

  253. be released

  254. by the power

  255. of the Holy Spirit

  256. to cope

  257. with the twists

  258. and the turns

  259. in life

  260. you know

  261. every day

  262. as you approach

  263. that rollercoaster

  264. afresh

  265. look

  266. to Christ

  267. and hear the words

  268. of verse 13

  269. can we get

  270. verse 13

  271. up on the

  272. on the board

  273. quickly

  274. would that be ok

  275. amazing

  276. may the God

  277. of hope

  278. fill you

  279. with all joy

  280. and peace

  281. as you trust

  282. in him

  283. so that you may

  284. overflow

  285. with hope

  286. by the power

  287. of the Holy Spirit

  288. so I just want

  289. to say to you

  290. this morning

  291. as I end

  292. if your rollercoaster

  293. is the circumstances

  294. surrounding

  295. you know

  296. politics

  297. or the current

  298. state of the world

  299. look to Christ

  300. and read

  301. this verse

  302. 13

  303. again

  304. may the God

  305. of hope

  306. fill you

  307. with joy

  308. and peace

  309. as you trust

  310. him

  311. so that you

  312. may overflow

  313. with hope

  314. by the power

  315. of the Holy Spirit

  316. and if your

  317. rollercoaster

  318. is circumstances

  319. surrounding

  320. maybe a family

  321. member

  322. or a situation

  323. at work

  324. or an illness

  325. to you

  326. or a loved

  327. one

  328. look

  329. to Christ

  330. and receive

  331. the prayer

  332. in verse

  333. 13

  334. may the God

  335. of hope

  336. fill you

  337. with all joy

  338. and peace

  339. as you trust

  340. in him

  341. so that you

  342. may overflow

  343. with hope

  344. by the power

  345. of the Holy Spirit

  346. if there's anyone

  347. here who feels

  348. hopeless

  349. hopeless

  350. and wants

  351. to know more

  352. about the hope

  353. that Jesus

  354. offers

  355. may I encourage

  356. you to come

  357. and have a chat

  358. with one of the team

  359. we'd be delighted

  360. to talk to you

  361. and pray with you

  362. and even if

  363. you're feeling like

  364. you already know

  365. Jesus

  366. but you're just

  367. hopeless

  368. at the moment

  369. for whatever reason

  370. please do be

  371. encouraged to speak

  372. with one of us

  373. the ministry team

  374. the prayer team

  375. we would love

  376. to pray with you

  377. to enable you

  378. to have that hope

  379. once more

  380. as you

  381. trust Jesus

  382. Amen
