  1. welcome everyone and welcome this week to Dottie Dora the Explorer she's our beloved

  2. T4 campervan and apparently you have to name your campervan so Mandy came up with the red

  3. spotted theme and Dottie Dora was named she looks absolutely gorgeous now thanks to a significant

  4. makeover and Mandy's interior design but look deeper and she's had a tough life she was originally

  5. a builder's van and still carries quite a few marks of the life that she lived for many years

  6. the thing about exploring is that there is always something new ahead and Dora I guess never guessed

  7. that her life on a Scottish building site would be radically transformed in later life and that

  8. there was a whole new adventure and a new life at waiting for her Sam's reading from Acts is about

  9. a radical transformation a life and world changing moment for Peter his fellow disciples and 3 000

  10. people that day you see they'd hidden away in fear they denied Jesus in fear for their own safety

  11. and when Jesus was arrested and then crucified and you you'd understand maybe how they had felt

  12. and yet what a change you see here is Peter courageously and boldly encouraging everyone

  13. to step out in faith and to be baptized and to follow Jesus you see in the political setting of the day

  14. it doesn't get any more radical and courageous than this God takes Peter and he puts him here in the right place

  15. at the right time with the right message maximum engagement with a group of people who were open to change

  16. and that brought about amazing transformation in the lives of so many Jesus has risen and they the disciples

  17. were filled with the power and presence of the Holy Spirit and the effect and new boldness was just amazing

  18. you see the news at the moment is full of courageous acts it's wherever you look or listen in the media

  19. everyday people like you and me courageously stepping out into settings that are brave and sacrificial

  20. and in many cases risking so much to see others saved the thing is that many people when you applaud their courageous acts

  21. they just say I was just doing my job or I knew I had to do that which is what I'm hearing from many Christians at the moment

  22. I'm just doing what I'm called to do there is a renewed sense amongst Christians

  23. of missional courage and boldness in reaching out to people who need to be saved

  24. I remember quite a few years ago a police colleague who dived into Bridgewater docks to save a dog

  25. now if you have ever seen Bridgewater docks in those days before they dredged it and turned it into a very nice marina

  26. I can tell you you'd think twice about diving in even for a human being

  27. yet Roger did

  28. and I remember in the police canteen afterwards and it was before political correctness was born

  29. and I'll leave you to picture the banter and I'm not sure whether he even did give the dog the kiss of life

  30. but the bottom line was would you risk your life for a dog

  31. but we all knew that we if we had been there on the day we'd have all done it

  32. because when you arrive in a desperate situation people look to you for actions and for answers

  33. and my colleague Roger did exactly what we would have all done

  34. when you were in a tough place courage kicks in

  35. he wasn't prepared to walk away through his lack of courage

  36. I'm not wishing to be too dramatic here today folks

  37. but today in our country people are drowning in fear at the moment

  38. and everything in the gospel that I read says do not be afraid

  39. Jesus says he has conquered the world

  40. we have been given the gifts we've been given the tools we've been given the courage

  41. to save this nation because the risen Christ gave those tools to us

  42. when he stepped out of a cold stone tomb and the Holy Spirit breathed life into us

  43. I think it's a moment for us all to be bold and courageous

  44. the church you and I an opportunity to be missionally courageous right now

  45. I remember Karl Martin at New One coined the term

  46. embolden my bold and encourage my courage

  47. and I sense that's a message that many of us are experiencing

  48. as we face a nation seeking new life and new hope

  49. and the church faces a new challenge

  50. as Karl was talking about boldness and change

  51. he told us a story

  52. he was driving home to Scotland on the M6

  53. and I don't know if you know maybe it was in a T4

  54. but the snow was coming down

  55. the blizzard was making driving almost impossible

  56. visibility was poor

  57. and it took every ounce to keep focused on the job in hand

  58. to arrive home safely

  59. but there it was

  60. on the inside lane

  61. creeping along of all things

  62. was an ice cream van

  63. an ice cream van

  64. I mean who wants an ice cream

  65. in the midst of winter

  66. but he sensed God saying to him

  67. that's often like the church

  68. it's a great thing

  69. and we want to share what we have

  70. but sometimes we find ourselves in the wrong place

  71. at the wrong time

  72. and frankly sometimes we just look ridiculous

  73. today I want to encourage your courage

  74. and embolden your bold

  75. because I think after many decades

  76. we the church

  77. the people of God

  78. are exactly in the right place

  79. at the right time

  80. to do the right thing

  81. and if we seek the Lord afresh

  82. in the power of his Holy Spirit

  83. with boldness and courage

  84. people will see that

  85. and experience in that

  86. and they will find in us

  87. God's love

  88. and fresh hope

  89. and new courage for today

  90. you can't walk away

  91. when you see something unfolding in front of you

  92. and God often places us in the right place

  93. at the right time

  94. to do the right thing

  95. but he will give us boldness

  96. and courage to do that

  97. perhaps at this moment

  98. your finger is hovering over the send button

  99. now to send this maybe to five people

  100. who you know

  101. who you wouldn't normally encourage them

  102. with a Christian message

  103. perhaps the phone is within easy reach

  104. to send a link or a prayer to them

  105. to speak to them

  106. you know

  107. do you see Peter and his disciples

  108. were in the right place

  109. at the right time

  110. and were courageous

  111. and the people of God

  112. grew dramatically overnight

  113. and kept growing

  114. you see the cross was a sort of reset button

  115. and maybe that's true for us

  116. the old was gone

  117. and the new was here

  118. you see we face an enemy

  119. and we are

  120. if I'm sure there's enough

  121. of us and Christians

  122. to be courageous enough

  123. to dive in

  124. when we get to Acts 12

  125. the church is under attack

  126. James has been beheaded

  127. Peter is imprisoned

  128. and the church

  129. what does the early church do?

  130. they are bold and courageous

  131. and they pray

  132. and by the end of the chapter

  133. Peter has been miraculously freed

  134. Herod is dead

  135. the people of God are emboldened

  136. and encouraged

  137. and the church continues growing

  138. faster than anyone

  139. could have imagined

  140. courage brings breakthrough

  141. and victory

  142. and I suppose the question is today

  143. will we dive in?

  144. I hope we will

  145. who are the five people

  146. you will contact

  147. to encourage their courage

  148. and embolden their bold

  149. with the gospel of Jesus today?

  150. those who accepted

  151. his message

  152. were baptised

  153. and about

  154. three thousand

  155. were added

  156. to that number

  157. that day

  158. I don't know

  159. when Dora

  160. will be allowed out

  161. on her next adventure

  162. but for many of us

  163. that adventure

  164. could start

  165. with the click of a button

  166. or a phone call

  167. right now

  168. or a random

  169. a courageous act

  170. of generosity

  171. can I pray with you?

  172. can I pray with you

  173. so that we get

  174. that sense of courage

  175. and boldness

  176. to be in the right place

  177. at the right time

  178. let's pray

  179. Holy Spirit

  180. come and embolden our bold

  181. and encourage our courage

  182. in the face of this virus

  183. may we stand in faith

  184. in your promises

  185. thank you for those

  186. that have fought the fight

  187. and now stand with you

  188. and I pray

  189. in this moment

  190. while the fire

  191. of the Holy Spirit

  192. burns in us

  193. and rises up

  194. to stir up our courage

  195. and embolden our bold

  196. that we will risk

  197. everything

  198. to bring others

  199. into relationship

  200. with you

  201. so Holy Spirit

  202. come now I pray

  203. fill us afresh

  204. and heal this land

  205. in Jesus name

  206. Amen

  207. Amen

  208. Amen

  209. Amen

  222. Amen
