  1. sometimes when we sin ourselves we would chuck everything into what we physically can

  2. to try and redeem ourselves as Christians and so sometimes it might be I know I will sign up to

  3. every single church rota possible and just to kind of redeem myself to show that I'm working

  4. for God's kingdom is that really what God is calling us into it could be that we would be

  5. really kind to lots and lots of people and find ourselves getting really really stuck in

  6. conversations and really getting held up in

  7. things going on in our lives etc and so we try and redeem ourselves and that's just not possible

  8. no payment is ever enough there's nothing that we can do to be completely forgiven and and for us

  9. that's a really hard concept especially being British as well even to apologize or even to

  10. accept an apology that's even still quite difficult because we don't like to admit that we're wrong

  11. and yet we've got this bible we've got this lovely book that has got God's word in

  12. and it says that we are wrong and there's nothing we can do about it and when you understand the

  13. concept of grace that's that's really difficult but let's go back a minute and let's look at the word

  14. sin okay sin is a nasty label it represents everything evil physically possible and so just to

  15. understand what sin is sin is an action that we actively decide to partake in that separates us

  16. from God okay so that's kind of terminology that a lot of Christians use let's unpack that a bit so

  17. God obviously intended to be in communion in relationship and have friendship with us it's actually

  18. called kinship which means it's like an adoptive um stance that God has chosen you no matter what

  19. even if you don't choose him he has chosen you okay and and so that's what kinship that's what our

  20. relationship is like with God and so he has paid the price for us by sending his son it's only him

  21. who can pardon us because he can't be with sin

  22. in the ancient world especially in the slave trade if a slave was to be set free a ransom would have to

  23. be paid and of course as part of this ransom there would be some costs that would need to be covered

  24. that happened that the owner would have um occurred and would obviously put some interest on top of that for the trouble

  25. of letting this uh slave go

  26. and that's exactly

  27. what we were we were a slave

  28. and our full bodies were completely slaves to sin

  29. and that is until God has said enough and he sent his son to die for us on that cross

  30. i remember going to um soul survivor who's heard of soul survivor at all a few of you have um so it's a youth

  31. festival that was born out of new wine and um and it used to have like 30 000 young people meet a year

  32. and i remember um a speaker danielle stripland come and speak and she spoke about an anaconda

  33. that was sweeping across the churches and taking them completely whole and she said

  34. um when she when God was speaking to her about this she she went on a um

  35. uh a trip out into the bush and she was given a little leaflet

  36. that told her how to survive a snake attack

  37. um if an anaconda comes anywhere near you

  38. you are to lay completely dead still on the floor act like you're dead

  39. let it consume you

  40. all the way up to your waist

  41. well i don't like snakes so i'm already not a fan of this

  42. um

  43. and then when

  44. right at the moment and of course when you're doing this

  45. it's really important that you have a sharp knife

  46. in your pocket

  47. okay

  48. if you forget if you're listening to this and you forget about the sharp knife

  49. god bless you um because i think you're going to be a bit stuck

  50. and when the time is right and the snake comes up to your waist

  51. she said get the knife out

  52. and stab it right in the head

  53. and you'll kill the snake

  54. um the disclaimer is i've never actually obviously done that so i don't know if it

  55. works or not so i don't imagine

  56. i would just say run personally um

  57. and and she went on to describe the snake

  58. that the snake comes over

  59. to kill still and destroy

  60. and that's exactly what satan is doing

  61. sin is something that makes us completely separate

  62. it harnesses us

  63. it makes us completely

  64. um

  65. guilty

  66. guilty

  67. and the fact is is that

  68. no matter what we have done

  69. as long as we keep coming back to jesus

  70. he is the one

  71. who has paid the ultimate price

  72. not for your past stuff

  73. but also

  74. for everything

  75. in the future

  76. that's really difficult to get your head around

  77. another way of looking at it is

  78. um i went to a christening

  79. last weekend

  80. and the the vicar was uh

  81. explaining

  82. to a con a congregation

  83. who weren't christians

  84. who probably haven't been to church

  85. mostly in their life

  86. and he was explaining what sin is

  87. sin is spelled s-i-n

  88. and it can't be spelled

  89. especially without the i

  90. and the i stands for me

  91. as an individual

  92. sin cannot be

  93. um

  94. it it cannot happen without me

  95. because i actively take a decision to sin

  96. and i felt that was really

  97. really good to hear

  98. that actually

  99. we partake in sin

  100. when we choose to sin

  101. and so

  102. two things that both the poor and the rich have in common

  103. does anyone know what that is

  104. anyone

  105. they both will die

  106. and they both stand before god

  107. completely naked

  108. with none of their riches

  109. with none of their possessions

  110. with none of their

  111. what have you done on earth so to speak

  112. there's none of that

  113. they stand before god

  114. and they are completely blameless

  115. they are completely in full of love

  116. that god has for them

  117. and in forgiveness

  118. so there's nothing that we can do here on earth

  119. if we have the riches

  120. to save our souls from anything

  121. other than to believe in jesus

  122. so i'm going to land with this

  123. because i don't want it to be all doom and gloom

  124. imagine this

  125. you go out

  126. with your family

  127. to a restaurant

  128. think of your favourite restaurant

  129. think of the favourite things

  130. that you like to wear

  131. you have your favourite dishes

  132. a free course meal

  133. obviously

  134. or more

  135. depends if you want more

  136. puddings etc

  137. your favourite glass of wine

  138. as well

  139. comes to payment time

  140. so you do that very British thing

  141. you know

  142. you either wave to the waiter

  143. or you do that special nod

  144. or

  145. haven't mastered that yet

  146. and you get your card out

  147. and you put it in the card machine

  148. and then the waiter turns around

  149. and says payment is declined

  150. we've all been there at some point

  151. or at least witnessed someone else

  152. be in that situation

  153. that's difficult

  154. it's embarrassing

  155. and it makes you feel like

  156. every single person is looking at you

  157. and that is exactly what sin is like

  158. and then

  159. unbeknown to you

  160. someone turns around

  161. and taps you on the shoulder

  162. and

  163. you have no idea

  164. who they are

  165. and

  166. they offer to pay for you

  167. imagine what kindness

  168. that is like

  169. that a payment

  170. has been made

  171. on your behalf

  172. by a complete stranger

  173. but someone who cares

  174. and loves for you

  175. Satan is the bartender

  176. who has told you

  177. that your payment

  178. is rejected

  179. the stranger is Jesus

  180. the one who is

  181. who is unknown

  182. who is caring

  183. and who loves you

  184. and so

  185. if you go from this

  186. church today

  187. know this

  188. that sin is designed

  189. to entrap us

  190. to enslave us

  191. and it is

  192. Jesus

  193. who is the one

  194. who set us free

  195. from that

  196. not just from

  197. yesterday's sin

  198. not just from today's sin

  199. but also tomorrow's sin

  200. and

  201. on

  202. and on

  203. and on

  204. and the only one thing

  205. that we could do

  206. every single time

  207. is just come back to Jesus

  208. that's it

  209. that is it

  210. and so

  211. if you feel guilty

  212. if you feel shameful

  213. or any of them other things

  214. that are to do with sin

  215. that's not of God

  216. because we know a God

  217. who is full of love

  218. forgiveness

  219. and who cares

  220. that is Jesus

  221. who has paid

  222. the ultimate price

  223. and there's nothing

  224. that we can do

  225. to accept that

  226. or pay for it

  227. other than

  228. just to worship him

  229. Amen

  230. I did say

  231. that this would be fun

  232. and

  233. so

  234. I'm going to ask you

  235. to stand

  236. if that's okay

  237. if you're able to

  238. if you could just

  239. close your eyes

  240. and have your hands out

  241. in front of you

  242. and if there's anything

  243. that you are struggling with

  244. to do with sin

  245. or anything at all

  246. in your mind

  247. just place that item

  248. in your hand

  249. in front of you

  250. and when you are ready

  251. to hand it over to God

  252. to say

  253. I can't do this anymore

  254. turn your hands down

  255. to the floor

  256. as if it were to fall out

  257. of your hand

  258. and let him

  259. have the control

  260. because we're returning

  261. back to him

  262. in worship

  263. so Holy Spirit

  264. we give thanks

  265. for you

  266. being here today

  267. give thanks

  268. for everyone

  269. being here

  270. and we pray

  271. that you stir

  272. our hearts

  273. to come

  274. to you more

  275. and to know you more

  276. may you be with us

  277. today

  278. and forever

  279. and in weeks ahead

  280. be with us

  281. in the storms

  282. and in the sunshine

  283. be with us

  284. in the loud

  285. and quiet moments

  286. in your precious name

  287. Amen

  288. Amen

  289. Amen
