  1. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you.

  2. Do not give to you as the world gives.

  3. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

  4. Quite a few years ago now, a couple on retirement

  5. decided they wanted to live in the most peaceful place

  6. and the most secure place that they could find.

  7. They were particularly worried about the threat of nuclear war

  8. and so they undertook a research project to find the place on the planet

  9. that they felt stood the greatest chance of being most secure and most peaceful.

  10. After many months of research, they eventually found a place.

  11. It was rather remote, but they felt that it seemed very, very secure.

  12. Secure and as likely to be full of peace as anywhere else on the planet.

  13. And so it was that Christmas 1981,

  14. they sent a Christmas card to the minister of the church,

  15. the place where they had left,

  16. from the Falkland Islands.

  17. Of course, it was only a matter of months later before war broke out.

  18. And that story serves to remind us that no matter how hard we may try

  19. to find a place of absolute peace in this world,

  20. given the structures within which we live,

  21. we will probably never be able to find somewhere where we can say

  22. we are with absolute certainty.

  23. Here is peace.

  24. Not this side of eternity anyway.

  25. Of course, that does not mean for one moment

  26. that we should give up the pursuit of peace,

  27. the very opposite.

  28. The peace that Christ gives us is a peace that inspires,

  29. that sends us out,

  30. that tells us that we must do everything we can

  31. to pursue peace.

  32. But let's be clear.

  33. This side of eternity,

  34. the world groans.

  35. This side of eternity,

  36. war continues to rage around us

  37. and, of course, within us.

  38. But Jesus says,

  39. peace I give you,

  40. my peace I give you,

  41. not as the world gives.

  42. That's important,

  43. because what Jesus is talking about here

  44. is something that is unique.

  45. It's like nothing else.

  46. Remember that Jesus said this

  47. knowing that he was going to the cross.

  48. And yet,

  49. even with that knowledge

  50. that he would suffer the most horrific death,

  51. he was able to speak with conviction

  52. of a peace like no other.

  53. And it is that peace

  54. that he offers us.

  55. So strong and so uniquely robust is this peace

  56. that Jesus is able to say,

  57. therefore,

  58. do not let your hearts be troubled.

  59. Think about that.

  60. How easy,

  61. how realistic is it

  62. to honestly speak of

  63. don't let your hearts be troubled.

  64. how can you make that happen?

  65. Well, you can't.

  66. And here's an experiment.

  67. Hold out your hand,

  68. your right hand.

  69. And now swing it around,

  70. so it's like that.

  71. And now with your left hand,

  72. I invite you to take hold

  73. of your middle finger

  74. and fold it into the palm

  75. of your hand.

  76. So you're holding it down like that.

  77. And now place that on your chest.

  78. Now, I'm going to ask you

  79. a number of questions.

  80. If you could make

  81. all your problems go away,

  82. then just lift your thumb up.

  83. I mean, right now.

  84. Just lift the thumb up.

  85. Give it a little wiggle.

  86. I kind of thought

  87. if you could just do anything

  88. to make all the problems go away,

  89. yeah, you probably would answer that

  90. in the positive.

  91. Okay, now let's move on

  92. to your first finger, okay?

  93. If you could just eliminate

  94. all worries and stresses

  95. that you have,

  96. then just wiggle that finger

  97. at me now.

  98. I thought that might be the case.

  99. Okay.

  100. Let's move to the little finger.

  101. The little finger.

  102. Imagine you were offered

  103. to have a personal servant,

  104. somebody who was with you always,

  105. 24-7 for the rest of your life,

  106. to do absolutely everything,

  107. to take care of every last job

  108. that you had.

  109. They were there always,

  110. in the background,

  111. not in your way,

  112. but just there to help out

  113. with anything and everything.

  114. Just lift your little finger

  115. if you wish you could have that.

  116. I thought that might be the case.

  117. Now we come to the ring finger.

  118. That's the one left

  119. that I haven't asked you

  120. to do anything with yet.

  121. In my bag over there,

  122. I've got 10,000 pounds.

  123. If you'd like it,

  124. just lift that finger now.

  125. Okay, I didn't think,

  126. I didn't think you'd want it.

  127. I was lying about the money,

  128. by the way,

  129. but hold your hand in that position

  130. for just a moment

  131. and think about this.

  132. Think about that command.

  133. Don't let your hearts be troubled.

  134. Imagine that's me telling you right now.

  135. Don't let your hearts be troubled.

  136. Now try and lift that finger.

  137. Yeah?

  138. That's what it's like.

  139. That human effort

  140. to strive to just eliminate

  141. all human tension.

  142. You can't do it.

  143. Really try hard to raise that.

  144. It's what it's like

  145. when you try of your own human resource

  146. to just not be afraid.

  147. Now you can relax your hand.

  148. We'll come back to that in a moment.

  149. So what are we to do?

  150. How do we make sense

  151. of those words of Jesus?

  152. You know,

  153. his words there are

  154. as profound,

  155. as empowering,

  156. as they are simple.

  157. But simple does not mean easy.

  158. See, Jesus gives us a hint

  159. as to,

  160. more than a hint,

  161. as to how we're to do this.

  162. How we're to not let ourselves

  163. be troubled or afraid.

  164. He gives us a hint

  165. in the words that precede

  166. those last words

  167. in that passage.

  168. When he says,

  169. and remember he's speaking here

  170. to the disciples,

  171. this is the first generation

  172. of Christian believers.

  173. He says that the Holy Spirit

  174. will teach you

  175. and will help you to remember.

  176. The Holy Spirit will teach you

  177. the things that I've said to you,

  178. says Jesus,

  179. and the Holy Spirit

  180. will help you to remember

  181. what I've said to you.

  182. In other words,

  183. as he says these words

  184. of promise

  185. to his earliest disciples,

  186. he's talking about

  187. the Bible

  188. that is still in the process

  189. of being written

  190. at that time.

  191. Those written words

  192. that they did not have

  193. but we do.

  194. Those written words

  195. that Jesus knew

  196. we would need

  197. for the generations.

  198. Those written words

  199. which we can now

  200. have access to

  201. to keep the teachings

  202. of Jesus alive.

  203. The Holy Spirit,

  204. Jesus says,

  205. the Holy Spirit

  206. that will come

  207. will teach you

  208. and will enable you

  209. to remember my words.

  210. That means that

  211. when we read

  212. Jesus' words,

  213. we can be confident

  214. that they are

  215. Jesus' words.

  216. they are God's words

  217. given to us

  218. in Scripture

  219. for our time

  220. here on earth.

  221. That we might

  222. encounter that relationship,

  223. that only relationship

  224. that can bring us peace.

  225. It doesn't eliminate

  226. our problems.

  227. It doesn't immunize us

  228. from struggles

  229. and pains.

  230. but it gives us

  231. a peace

  232. that is unique.

  233. It means two things.

  234. Firstly,

  235. when we read

  236. these words

  237. of Jesus

  238. in the Bible,

  239. first,

  240. we've got to trust them.

  241. And that's not easy

  242. but it's what

  243. we're called to do.

  244. Secondly,

  245. and this is a word

  246. that's not particularly

  247. fashionable

  248. or popular,

  249. we've got to obey them.

  250. Now we don't like

  251. the word obey,

  252. we wince at it

  253. because it sounds

  254. like mindless submission.

  255. It's not.

  256. When we think,

  257. when we talk about

  258. obeying

  259. the word of God,

  260. it's about

  261. allowing it

  262. to have authority

  263. over our lives.

  264. You see,

  265. we can read

  266. the Bible

  267. but when we

  268. submit to its authority

  269. we find that

  270. it has this

  271. uncanny habit

  272. of reading us.

  273. Now put out

  274. your hand again.

  275. Take hold

  276. of that little

  277. middle finger there

  278. and bend it down,

  279. swing it round,

  280. place it onto

  281. your chest

  282. back in the same position.

  283. Now once more

  284. I ask you

  285. to try

  286. to lift

  287. that ring finger.

  288. Now don't try

  289. too hard

  290. because you might

  291. cause yourself

  292. an injury

  293. but just in that

  294. state of tension

  295. that's what it's like

  296. when we try

  297. to bring ourselves

  298. some sense of peace

  299. humanly speaking.

  300. We just can't

  301. eliminate.

  302. We can't

  303. actually save

  304. ourselves.

  305. Now with your

  306. left hand

  307. take hold

  308. of that finger.

  309. only God

  310. can do this.

  311. I invite you

  312. to lift

  313. not too far

  314. or you will

  315. hurt yourself

  316. but lift

  317. that finger

  318. off your chest

  319. and hold it

  320. there for a moment.

  321. When we accept

  322. the authority

  323. of God's word

  324. when we allow

  325. the word

  326. of Jesus Christ

  327. into our lives

  328. when we turn

  329. to him

  330. knowing that

  331. he is the only

  332. one that can

  333. bring that peace

  334. that is beyond

  335. understanding

  336. he lifts us

  337. not of our own

  338. strength

  339. but in his.

  340. Let's pray

  341. together.

  342. Lord thank you

  343. that you do not

  344. just leave us

  345. in this world

  346. to get on

  347. with things

  348. but that you

  349. come to us

  350. in Jesus

  351. that you come

  352. to us in Jesus

  353. and by the power

  354. of your Holy Spirit

  355. you continue

  356. to speak to us

  357. some 2,000 years

  358. on

  359. through your word.

  360. Lord help us

  361. whatever we are

  362. going through

  363. in our lives

  364. right now

  365. whatever is

  366. stopping us

  367. from having

  368. peace

  369. for whatever

  370. is troubling

  371. our hearts

  372. help us

  373. to turn

  374. to turn

  375. to you

  376. and to

  377. know the

  378. power

  379. of your

  380. Holy Spirit

  381. to know

  382. the power

  383. of your

  384. word

  385. Lord would

  386. you lift

  387. us

  388. would you

  389. help us

  390. to have

  391. that peace

  392. that is

  393. uniquely

  394. yours

  395. not of our

  396. own strength

  397. but of

  398. yours

  399. help us

  400. to know

  401. that peace

  402. help us

  403. to grow

  404. in that

  405. peace

  406. this day

  407. and in

  408. the time

  409. to come

  410. in Jesus

  411. name

  412. Amen
