  1. Good morning, everyone. I did notice that today's the day that we're talking about our sin,

  2. and yours truly has to talk about it. I reckon I may be the only person in here with a professorship

  3. in sin. And I had, I want to say this just before I start, I mean, obviously, there's

  4. a sense in which this message is severe. And I'm not giving this message because I want to upset

  5. anybody. I want just to try and teach you the truth of what Scripture says. When I was in local

  6. church ministry, I had this novel idea, which I drummed into my staff, that people should leave

  7. church on a Sunday feeling better about life than before they arrived. And when you get a message

  8. like this to preach, that can't be guaranteed. So I'm not warning you or anything like that. This is

  9. not a trigger warning. This is just simply to say that a message like this forces you, some of you,

  10. to be more honest with yourselves and with God than you've ever been.

  11. And in doing that, you will find the kind of freedom that Liz was talking about when she prayed

  12. so powerfully just a few moments ago. So let's pray together, shall we, before I begin.

  13. Lord, we are so conscious that you are an amazingly gracious God. And Lord, in your grace and in your mercy,

  14. you can forgive our sins. Lord, that in itself is unbelievable to us. So often we find it difficult

  15. to forgive ourselves. But Lord, we can't comprehend the depth and the height and the depth of your grace.

  16. But Lord, we know we need it because even if we follow you, we know that we're not perfect.

  17. And we constantly need to plug into that source of grace and forgiveness.

  18. And Lord, we pray that you'd help us be better disciples, better witnesses for you.

  19. So come, Holy Spirit, and bring us under healthy conviction.

  20. And give us the courage to do something about it.

  21. And we pray these things in Jesus' name. And the people who agreed, say it together.

  22. Amen.

  23. So my text this morning is from Romans chapter 3 and verse 23.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  24. For all have sinned, wrote St. Paul, and fall short of the glory of God.

  25. All have sinned.

  26. Many years ago in the 20th century, G.K. Chesterton wrote into the Times newspaper

  27. and the subject of the correspondence during that time was,

  28. what's wrong with the world?

  29. G.K. Chesterton just wrote a very short letter.

  30. It said, dear sir, I am.

  31. You're sincerely G.K. Chesterton.

  32. As you know, G.K. Chesterton was a convert to the Catholic faith.

  33. And I think like a lot of people, when they first become Christians,

  34. feel very burdened with the kind of life they've been living.

  35. And very grateful that God's grace is great enough to cover our sins.

  36. But first, if I may, just a very quick thumbnail print of what the Epistle to the Romans is about.

  37. Now, it's about salvation.

  38. It's about how we can be saved, what salvation is,

  39. and most importantly, how you can have assurance that you are saved.

  40. I imagine there are a lot of people in church today,

  41. kind of, if they think about salvation,

  42. and they think about the end of their lives,

  43. which would be pretty rare in itself,

  44. but if you did do that,

  45. you'd probably be a kind of fingers crossed thing,

  46. you know, maybe I've done enough good in my life

  47. to kind of get me past the finishing post.

  48. God doesn't want you to think like that.

  49. God wants you to know,

  50. if you trust in Christ, that you are saved.

  51. John, in his epistle, wrote this.

  52. He said, we write these things.

  53. He's been writing about the salvation of God in Christ.

  54. We tell you these things, he said,

  55. so that you may know,

  56. you may know that you have eternal life.

  57. Let me ask you this.

  58. Would you feel a little more inspired or less inspired

  59. if you left this church this morning

  60. and you knew that you were saved for eternity?

  61. Think about it.

  62. Basically, in Romans, we're told that the wrath of God,

  63. and some of you would say, hang on,

  64. how can such a loving God be wrathful?

  65. Well, any of you who are parents know

  66. that loving parents can indeed be wrathful,

  67. and I would argue need to be wrathful on occasions.

  68. That the wrath of God extends to the godless,

  69. and it might be good homework for you to go away

  70. and read chapter one of Romans,

  71. because if you read it and you understand it,

  72. you'll be very clear,

  73. you should not be surprised by the way the world is going.

  74. What chapter one is about is that the godless

  75. will be the sufferers of God's wrath,

  76. and the world will go south.

  77. It will become idolatrous.

  78. It will become narcissistic.

  79. It will become sexualized.

  80. It will become everything

  81. that healthy civilizations really don't want to be.

  82. And Paul has a kind of framework

  83. that he's working with here,

  84. and that is, Paul is trying to tell us

  85. what the diagnosis of our humanity is.

  86. What is wrong with us?

  87. Second, he's trying to tell us

  88. what the prognosis of that diagnosis is.

  89. This is what will happen

  90. if you don't accept the diagnosis.

  91. And the third thing is, of course,

  92. Paul tells us about the cure.

  93. Amazing epistle.

  94. And, I mean, the mad thing is,

  95. you know, when we write letters,

  96. A, most of our letters aren't as long as Paul's,

  97. are they?

  98. Let's be honest.

  99. And secondly, they're not quite as serious.

  100. You know, and Paul, I think,

  101. only once in all of his epistles write,

  102. wish you were here.

  103. You know, Paul's a serious-minded,

  104. pharisaical rabbi

  105. who's converted to Jesus Christ.

  106. And because of the way the letter is,

  107. I mean, we don't normally get letters

  108. and just focus on one paragraph

  109. as we are doing today.

  110. I tend to read it from start to finish.

  111. So, what we're talking about today

  112. is the diagnosis.

  113. All have sinned

  114. and fall short of the glory of God.

  115. If you ask yourself the question,

  116. what is sin?

  117. I wonder what your answer would be.

  118. I mean, some people start

  119. kind of expressing

  120. a false security

  121. because their first thought is,

  122. go to the Ten Commandments.

  123. And most of us,

  124. at any one time,

  125. are scoring about seven out of ten

  126. in our favor.

  127. I don't know about you,

  128. but on my finals paper,

  129. I would have happily settled for 70%.

  130. We kind of think,

  131. that's enough.

  132. And yet, St. Paul tells us

  133. that when we break the law

  134. in just one tiny bit,

  135. we break the whole of the law.

  136. There is no security in thinking,

  137. seven out of ten of the commandments

  138. is fine by me.

  139. Basically, what sin is,

  140. is when I make the decision

  141. openly or subliminally

  142. to go my way

  143. rather than go God's way.

  144. At its very basic level,

  145. that is what sin is.

  146. When I decide,

  147. either openly or inwardly,

  148. to go my way

  149. rather than God's way,

  150. I am, as far as God is concerned,

  151. in sin.

  152. That's why Paul can so confidently say,

  153. all have sinned.

  154. I guarantee

  155. that if I said to you,

  156. is there anybody in church this morning

  157. who's never sinned?

  158. None of you would put your hand up,

  159. and if you did,

  160. the rest of us would be thinking,

  161. liar.

  162. All have sinned,

  163. because

  164. from our birth,

  165. we've had this inward thing

  166. to make ourselves

  167. the center

  168. of the universe.

  169. We are,

  170. as Richard Dawkins put it,

  171. survival machines.

  172. And the interesting thing was,

  173. the analysis,

  174. the Judeo-Christian analysis

  175. of humanity,

  176. that all have sinned

  177. and fall short

  178. of the glory of God,

  179. held sway

  180. for centuries.

  181. People didn't quibble with it.

  182. They might not like it.

  183. They may not adhere

  184. to the ramifications of it,

  185. but

  186. they believed

  187. that human beings

  188. were basically flawed.

  189. And then,

  190. in the 18th century,

  191. appeared this man,

  192. Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

  193. His theory was

  194. the mirror opposite.

  195. And it was this.

  196. No,

  197. that Judeo-Christian

  198. mumbo-jumbo

  199. is not right.

  200. No,

  201. we are basically good,

  202. but it is the totality

  203. of our experiential environment

  204. which spoils us.

  205. Ultimately,

  206. this is very wrong-headed thinking.

  207. But the problem

  208. with a lot of wrong-headed thinking

  209. is,

  210. it has some half-truths.

  211. It is quite clearly true

  212. that our experiential environment,

  213. the way we're treated,

  214. the way we are,

  215. the things that we are

  216. exposed to in our lives,

  217. can impact

  218. our personality

  219. and the way we are.

  220. What do I mean by that?

  221. Well,

  222. of course,

  223. if you've had appalling parents,

  224. you will really struggle with that

  225. at some point in your life.

  226. If you've had

  227. terrible experiences

  228. in your life,

  229. you've been bullied,

  230. or you've been abused,

  231. blah, blah,

  232. you know,

  233. the list could go on,

  234. then you will be

  235. impacted by that.

  236. Trust me,

  237. I have worked

  238. with so many people

  239. who were bullied

  240. when they were in school

  241. who have never got past it.

  242. Never.

  243. Never.

  244. Or if you feel

  245. you've been treated

  246. on the wrong end

  247. of inequality,

  248. you know,

  249. of equality.

  250. There's a program

  251. on Netflix

  252. at the moment

  253. which is called

  254. The Sex Life

  255. of Adolf Hitler.

  256. And, you know,

  257. I'm not recommending it,

  258. but

  259. really what it is,

  260. is a kind of

  261. psychological profile

  262. of this dreadful man

  263. who did dreadful things.

  264. And,

  265. basically,

  266. I mean,

  267. this man's parents,

  268. his mother was

  269. totally over-doting,

  270. understandably in a way,

  271. because she lost

  272. two sons

  273. before Adolf,

  274. the young Adolf,

  275. was born.

  276. So she

  277. over-doted on him.

  278. His father

  279. was a drunken,

  280. violent bully.

  281. And out of

  282. that mix

  283. appears

  284. this horror story

  285. of a man

  286. called Adolf Hitler.

  287. Rousseau

  288. did have a point

  289. that

  290. our

  291. experiential

  292. environment

  293. does affect us.

  294. But the idea

  295. that we're just

  296. spoiled by

  297. that environmental

  298. experience

  299. tends to suggest

  300. that there's no way

  301. back from it.

  302. Tends to suggest

  303. that we are more

  304. sinned against

  305. than sinning.

  306. That's why

  307. you can understand

  308. why it's such

  309. a popular theory

  310. today.

  311. Drives a lot

  312. of politics.

  313. We're basically

  314. good,

  315. but it's the

  316. totality of our

  317. experience alone

  318. which spoils us,

  319. which ruins us.

  320. No,

  321. says Scripture.

  322. We were

  323. objects of

  324. God's wrath

  325. by nature,

  326. said Paul

  327. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  328. chapter 2.

  329. I find it

  330. a really

  331. disturbing

  332. idea

  333. that we are

  334. simply

  335. the prisoners

  336. of our past.

  337. past.

  338. If that were

  339. true,

  340. you would

  341. indeed be

  342. people

  343. without hope.

  344. If there

  345. is no way

  346. out of that

  347. other than

  348. years of

  349. psychotherapy,

  350. and I'm not

  351. saying that

  352. that's unhelpful,

  353. but if there

  354. is no way

  355. out,

  356. I'm just

  357. left on my

  358. own with the

  359. totality of my

  360. experiential

  361. environmental

  362. history,

  363. that would

  364. indeed

  365. be without

  366. hope.

  367. Rousseau

  368. believed that

  369. the only way

  370. you could set

  371. human beings

  372. free was to

  373. get rid of

  374. all law.

  375. Rousseau would

  376. have loved

  377. the activist

  378. line that we

  379. should be

  380. defunding the

  381. police at the

  382. moment.

  383. That would

  384. have been

  385. right up his

  386. alley.

  387. And you've

  388. seen on

  389. your television

  390. what happens

  391. when the

  392. police stand

  393. back at a

  394. demonstration,

  395. and the next

  396. minute people

  397. are looting,

  398. people are

  399. violent.

  400. No, if we

  401. didn't have

  402. police, I

  403. think our

  404. society probably

  405. would be more

  406. of a pigsty

  407. than it often

  408. seems today.

  409. We were

  410. by nature

  411. objects of

  412. God's wrath,

  413. wrote St.

  414. Paul in

  415. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  416. chapter 2,

  417. yet we are

  418. stained.

  419. And you

  420. will never

  421. understand what

  422. the Bible

  423. teaches about

  424. the amazing

  425. nature of

  426. God, unless

  427. you understand

  428. what the

  429. Bible teaches

  430. about our

  431. humanity,

  432. about the

  433. terrifying

  434. outcomes,

  435. when a

  436. society becomes

  437. godless,

  438. self-centered,

  439. materialistic,

  440. and sexualized.

  441. All have

  442. sinned and

  443. fall short of

  444. the glory of

  445. God.

  446. Does it

  447. matter?

  448. Well, if you

  449. think it

  450. doesn't matter,

  451. then the

  452. problem is,

  453. you're in a

  454. rather complacent

  455. situation.

  456. Isn't it

  457. true that we

  458. so often say

  459. to ourselves,

  460. when we

  461. hear about

  462. somebody who's

  463. done something

  464. terrible to

  465. another person,

  466. oh, they're

  467. only human.

  468. Well, of course,

  469. there's a truth

  470. in there.

  471. When we say to

  472. ourselves, a

  473. little bit of

  474. this and a

  475. little bit of

  476. that never did

  477. anybody any

  478. harm.

  479. Everything in

  480. moderation, and

  481. yet, how

  482. often does

  483. moderation

  484. lead to

  485. addiction?

  486. I never

  487. met an

  488. addict yet

  489. who set out

  490. when they

  491. took their

  492. first drag

  493. of a spliff

  494. or their

  495. first glass

  496. of alcohol,

  497. or the

  498. first time

  499. they slept

  500. with somebody,

  501. thought to

  502. themselves,

  503. you know

  504. what a

  505. great end

  506. game would

  507. be if I

  508. got addicted

  509. to this

  510. stuff.

  511. I never

  512. met anybody

  513. who wanted

  514. to be like

  515. that.

  516. Online

  517. gambling at

  518. the moment.

  519. Nobody

  520. plates their

  521. first bet

  522. for a tenner

  523. on something

  524. thinking,

  525. it'd be great

  526. one day,

  527. I'll be so

  528. addicted to

  529. this, I'll

  530. be owing

  531. millions.

  532. No, we

  533. need to be

  534. careful with

  535. sin, not

  536. to be

  537. complacent.

  538. And of

  539. course, the

  540. big deal is

  541. that the

  542. scripture tells

  543. us in the

  544. book of the

  545. prophet Isaiah

  546. that what

  547. our sin

  548. does is it

  549. separates us

  550. from God.

  551. Separates

  552. us.

  553. You ever

  554. have the

  555. feeling, God

  556. seems a

  557. little remote

  558. to me?

  559. When I was

  560. in local

  561. church ministry,

  562. I had people

  563. come and see

  564. me, and

  565. they say

  566. stuff like,

  567. you know

  568. what, I'm

  569. feeling a

  570. little distant

  571. from my

  572. wife at

  573. the moment.

  574. Oh, why

  575. would that

  576. be?

  577. Well, you

  578. know, things,

  579. I'm working

  580. hard to

  581. work.

  582. I said,

  583. can I

  584. just ask

  585. you a

  586. question?

  587. Is the

  588. fact that

  589. you're feeling

  590. remote from

  591. your wife a

  592. cause or a

  593. symptom?

  594. What do you

  595. mean?

  596. Tell me what

  597. your relationship

  598. with God is

  599. like at the

  600. moment.

  601. Oh, well.

  602. You know,

  603. things are not

  604. great.

  605. What do you

  606. mean?

  607. There's a

  608. secretary at

  609. work.

  610. You know,

  611. she's young

  612. and she's

  613. very interested

  614. in my

  615. life and

  616. we've had a

  617. couple of

  618. lunches

  619. together.

  620. I'm like,

  621. whoa,

  622. whoa,

  623. whoa,

  624. whoa.

  625. He said,

  626. what, do

  627. you have any

  628. advice for

  629. me?

  630. I said,

  631. where do

  632. you meet

  633. this woman?

  634. He said,

  635. we travel

  636. together on

  637. the commuter

  638. train every

  639. morning.

  640. Do you have

  641. any advice?

  642. I said,

  643. yeah, change

  644. trains.

  645. change trains

  646. and he did

  647. and his

  648. marriages

  649. survived.

  650. Does sin

  651. matter?

  652. Of course it

  653. does because

  654. it separates

  655. us from

  656. God.

  657. Is there

  658. a soul

  659. in church

  660. this morning

  661. who doesn't

  662. know that to

  663. be true for

  664. themselves?

  665. When we do

  666. stuff that we

  667. know is wrong,

  668. even when we

  669. do stuff that

  670. we're not

  671. sure whether

  672. it's wrong,

  673. our relationship

  674. with God

  675. suffers.

  676. And this,

  677. my friends,

  678. is the season

  679. of Lent.

  680. Forty days

  681. of fasting

  682. and repenting.

  683. I know we

  684. don't do it

  685. for forty days,

  686. but that's the

  687. idea of it,

  688. that we're

  689. supposed to

  690. turn inward

  691. on ourselves

  692. for forty

  693. days and

  694. examine our

  695. relationship

  696. with God.

  697. in the

  698. early church

  699. part of

  700. Lent was

  701. that if

  702. you committed

  703. a sin and

  704. it was publicly

  705. known about,

  706. right?

  707. I mean,

  708. you'd be

  709. thanking God

  710. you were not

  711. part of that

  712. early church.

  713. I'll tell you

  714. why.

  715. Because if they

  716. committed a

  717. serious sin,

  718. they had to

  719. come up to

  720. the front of

  721. the church

  722. and tell the

  723. rest of the

  724. church about

  725. it.

  726. Then the

  727. priest would

  728. pray a prayer

  729. of absolution

  730. on them

  731. and then

  732. he would

  733. give them

  734. penances.

  735. Go and

  736. recite the

  737. Hail Mary

  738. a few times

  739. or give

  740. the church

  741. a bit more

  742. money.

  743. Only ministers

  744. are in

  745. favour of

  746. that.

  747. And that's

  748. what Lent

  749. was.

  750. During the

  751. forty days

  752. of Lent,

  753. repentant

  754. sinners were

  755. excommunicated,

  756. not allowed to

  757. receive communion

  758. for those forty

  759. days, and

  760. then on Easter

  761. Sunday, the

  762. day of

  763. resurrection,

  764. they'd be

  765. allowed back

  766. in.

  767. Imagine that.

  768. Imagine the

  769. joy of a

  770. repentant sinner

  771. being allowed

  772. back into

  773. the faith

  774. community.

  775. What we

  776. don't have in

  777. our church

  778. today is

  779. any sense

  780. that when we

  781. sin as

  782. individuals,

  783. we're letting

  784. the side

  785. down.

  786. This is

  787. your family.

  788. This should

  789. hurt you

  790. like when

  791. your kids

  792. misbehave,

  793. etc.,

  794. etc.

  795. And now,

  796. friends, to

  797. end, a

  798. spoiler alert.

  799. Because I'm

  800. not talking

  801. about sin.

  802. Next week,

  803. you're going

  804. to get a

  805. better exposition

  806. of the

  807. cure, the

  808. cross.

  809. Paul wrote

  810. this in

  811. Ephesians

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  812. chapter 1,

  813. in him,

  814. in Jesus,

  815. we have

  816. redemption

  817. through his

  818. blood,

  819. the forgiveness

  820. of sins

  821. in accordance

  822. with the

  823. riches of

  824. his grace.

  825. Those Jews

  826. of old had

  827. a very simple

  828. idea.

  829. You remember

  830. in the Old

  831. Testament how

  832. you read

  833. about sacrifice.

  834. As if you're a

  835. rich person,

  836. you take a

  837. full-grown bull

  838. without blemish

  839. and have it

  840. slaughtered on

  841. the altar.

  842. If you didn't

  843. have so much

  844. money, you

  845. could take a

  846. couple of

  847. pigeons.

  848. And the

  849. idea behind

  850. that sacrificial

  851. system was a

  852. life for a

  853. life.

  854. I know that

  855. you animal rights

  856. activists won't

  857. like that system

  858. whatsoever.

  859. But that's what

  860. they thought.

  861. That's why when

  862. Paul is writing

  863. in Ephesians 1,

  864. he uses that

  865. rather strange

  866. language.

  867. In Jesus, we

  868. have redemption

  869. through his

  870. blood, through

  871. his death on

  872. the cross of

  873. Calvary.

  874. Bearing shame

  875. and scoffing

  876. rude, in my

  877. place, condemned

  878. he stood.

  879. You know,

  880. St.

  881. Paul described

  882. himself, this

  883. man who we

  884. put in stained

  885. glass windows and

  886. venerate over the

  887. centuries.

  888. St.

  889. Paul described

  890. himself as the

  891. chief of

  892. sinners.

  893. I have only

  894. one quibble with

  895. that and I

  896. might be able to

  897. challenge him on

  898. that point.

  899. Friends, it's

  900. Lent.

  901. Take your

  902. relationship with

  903. God a notch

  904. further.

  905. Think about what

  906. you've heard this

  907. morning.

  908. Not my ideas,

  909. the ideas of

  910. this book,

  911. inspired by the

  912. Holy Spirit,

  913. for our

  914. edification,

  915. for our

  916. rebuke,

  917. and for our

  918. sanctification,

  919. to make us

  920. more like

  921. Jesus Christ.

  922. All, for

  923. all have

  924. sinned, and

  925. fall short of

  926. the glory of

  927. God.

  928. I wonder if

  929. you have any

  930. sense of

  931. personal conviction

  932. this morning.

  933. I wonder if

  934. this Lent

  935. could be a

  936. moment when

  937. you stand up

  938. for Jesus

  939. and stand in

  940. front of him,

  941. metaphorically

  942. speaking,

  943. naked,

  944. leave your

  945. clothes on,

  946. and you

  947. just,

  948. in the

  949. silence of

  950. your own

  951. heart,

  952. tell him the

  953. truth.

  954. Tell him what

  955. it is you

  956. would love to

  957. be saved from,

  958. and know

  959. the power,

  960. the power of

  961. his redeeming

  962. blood in your

  963. life.
