  1. Thank you. It's a great story of Nehemiah, of a man who was faithful with prayer and actually received so much just through honouring God in what he was asking and his faithfulness.

  2. I suppose the question is, is this, is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tyre?

  3. It's an interesting one, isn't it? Corrie Ten Boone, that wonderful, faithful person in life, asked the question and I asked the question myself.

  4. Is prayer my steering wheel or is it just there in case I need it when a crisis comes?

  5. It's a question we all have to ask ourselves because if I'm honest, and I hope you are too, there are times in my life when I've resorted to prayer only when the wheel has come off, let alone knowing that the spare wheel was there.

  6. What we're talking about here in Philippians, it says, do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, every situation, by prayer and petition, by thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

  7. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

  8. That's exactly what Nehemiah did.

  9. Nehemiah brought his requests in his heart for the people in every situation.

  10. And also we need to bring that at times not just when the wheel is about to come off, but in our times of thanksgiving as well.

  11. And in our series on Christian disciplines, we come to this point about prayer.

  12. Now, Russ last week spoke on this idea of quiet time, which made me break into a sweat.

  13. Because if you know me, you know that I struggle with quiet time.

  14. Mandy's just here to reinforce the fact that I don't stop.

  15. And if you struggle, like me, in times of stillness and quietness, let alone the idea of a silent retreat,

  16. and I've tried a few, but God speaks to me.

  17. Perhaps we need to find out what our own disciplines are in response to prayer.

  18. What is our own discipline that encourages us and empowers us more and more to pray in the everyday?

  19. Now, discipline in itself is a tricky word, because discipline rather conjures up that idea of doing something wrong and being chastised for it.

  20. But again, as any athlete or in fact anyone who is focused on their goals in life will tell you,

  21. that it is an essential element of actually achieving that which you seek to achieve, to be disciplined in what we do.

  22. And discipline can be good.

  23. If it helps you, I sense God, personally, I sense God in the busyness of life.

  24. You know, even in the busyness of life itself, maybe because I struggle to stay still.

  25. And the Lord has to speak very, very clearly to seize my attention.

  26. That burning bush of life that seizes me in the middle of the day that says, hang on, Clive, we need to chat.

  27. Very helpful, whatever our own disciplines are.

  28. And there are many myths in rituals that have grown up around prayer that you may have found helpful.

  29. But on the other hand, you may have found unhelpful and may bring guilt,

  30. which is the last thing that a discipline of prayer should bring.

  31. And when it comes to prayer and discipline, there is an element with some elements of Christian discipleship,

  32. where prayer has become a chore.

  33. And I don't say that lightly, because I recall maybe you used those Bible notes,

  34. or have used those Bible notes of every day with Jesus.

  35. And a friend of mine once said, I think I need something that says every other day with Jesus.

  36. Or maybe they could print one of every week with Jesus.

  37. Because that's where my life is.

  38. And I recall a lady telling me that her discipline was to come to an 8 a.m. communion,

  39. happened to be the Book of Common Prayer.

  40. And on the way out, I said, so what, asking her, what about this 8 o'clock enriches your life?

  41. And she looked at me in horror and said, enrich?

  42. What do you mean, young man, enrich my life?

  43. She said, this is a requirement.

  44. She said, what happens, she said, if during the week something happens to me,

  45. and I haven't been to communion at 8 o'clock, I know that I won't go to heaven.

  46. What a sadness in that understanding of theology,

  47. where her morning prayer, instead of being the joy of her life,

  48. had become a chore and a stick in which she felt her religion was there to beat her.

  49. We have to think about this discipline of prayer,

  50. how we ensure that it is enriching, empowering, engaging, life-giving,

  51. powerful part of our discipleship in our life.

  52. And that it is 24-7.

  53. I find prayer, and I hope you do too,

  54. that it is part of every part of our life.

  55. It's 24-7.

  56. And if, like me, you were brought up in the 60s and 70s,

  57. you will know that famous advert that was on for a certain alcoholic drink.

  58. It was called Martini.

  59. And it said, anytime, anyplace, anywhere,

  60. there's a wonderful world we can share.

  61. It's the right place, it's the right time, it's...

  62. Other drinks aren't available.

  63. But that's the way it has to be.

  64. Prayer is 24-7.

  65. Anytime, anyplace, anywhere,

  66. it's a wonderful world we can share with others around us.

  67. And that is what it was called to be.

  68. It's 24-7 prayer in relationship with Jesus.

  69. When it breaks,

  70. when that is not the focus of our prayer life and our discipline,

  71. in our relationship with Jesus,

  72. then it becomes about religion and a chore and ticking a box.

  73. It enriches, it builds up,

  74. it encourages,

  75. it enlivens not only us.

  76. That's why the 24-7 prayer movement is so powerful.

  77. In Scripture, witness to it.

  78. Look to the Lord and His strength

  79. and seek His face always.

  80. In 1 Chronicles.

  81. In Matthew 26,

  82. watch and pray,

  83. so that you will not fall into temptation.

  84. The spirit is willing,

  85. but the flesh is weak.

  86. Amen.

  87. Be joyful in hope,

  88. patient in affection,

  89. faithful in prayer.

  90. Romans 12.

  91. And of course Thessalonians,

  92. which is at the heart of this,

  93. pray continually.

  94. Pray continually.

  95. That's what we're encouraged to do.

  96. If you've been in industry,

  97. or as Harvey will be very shortly into the armed services,

  98. you will know that there is a thing called standing operating procedures,

  99. SOPs.

  100. The thing is with a standing operation procedure,

  101. is that you know what to do in any given circumstance.

  102. That you will know that there's a set of things that you can rely on,

  103. that almost becomes like second nature,

  104. even when you're sleeping.

  105. I mean,

  106. probably I can't do it now,

  107. but I could,

  108. is I could strip down a Glock nine millimeter gun,

  109. in my,

  110. with,

  111. with,

  112. within the darkness,

  113. whatever,

  114. to strip it down,

  115. put it back together.

  116. Because when it jams,

  117. your life depends on it,

  118. but more importantly,

  119. other people's life depends on it.

  120. And that is prayer.

  121. 24-7.

  122. Standing operating procedure.

  123. Where do I go?

  124. I go to prayer.

  125. That is my discipline.

  126. That is my first place.

  127. Because that,

  128. the Lord,

  129. is with me.

  130. It's being intentional about that discipline.

  131. It's about a discipline of the heart and the will,

  132. that leads to a discipline in prayer.

  133. That's what I love about Nehemiah this morning.

  134. His heart was for the people.

  135. His heart was for a city that had fallen apart.

  136. His heart was for a city far away.

  137. So what did he do?

  138. Rather than conjure it up,

  139. he prayed.

  140. And amazingly,

  141. the king provided him with everything that he needed

  142. to go back and not just rebuild a city,

  143. but to rebuild the faith and worship of the people.

  144. Is that our prayer as a community?

  145. For the community that we seek to serve?

  146. To go and be that focus,

  147. to pray for a community that desperately needs it and needs rebuilding.

  148. In the film,

  149. Shadowlands,

  150. the story of C.S.

  151. Lewis,

  152. he has just found the love of his life

  153. in the form of Joy Gresham.

  154. He found it in later life.

  155. And only they had a short time together

  156. when Joy was found to have terminal cancer.

  157. And there's a little clip to show you now.

  158. And I think this is so profound

  159. and one of the most profound expressions of faith and prayer

  160. that resonates in my life

  161. and as he responds to the situation.

  162. Jack,

  163. what news?

  164. Ah,

  165. good news,

  166. I think,

  167. Harry.

  168. Yes,

  169. good news.

  170. Very glad,

  171. Jack.

  172. Thank you,

  173. Christopher.

  174. Thank you.

  175. Christopher can scoff,

  176. but I know how hard you've been praying.

  177. Huh?

  178. Now God is answering you.

  179. I pray.

  180. That's not why I pray,

  181. Harry.

  182. I pray because I can't help myself.

  183. I pray because I'm helpless.

  184. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time,

  185. waking and sleeping.

  186. It doesn't change God,

  187. it changes me.

  188. He's got paid a lot.

  189. I pray because I can't help myself.

  190. I pray because I'm helpless.

  191. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time,

  192. waking and sleeping.

  193. It doesn't change God,

  194. it changes me.

  195. In our reading this morning,

  196. Nehemiah,

  197. who has survived the exile,

  198. continues to pray for his people.

  199. He never gives up.

  200. That is his heart.

  201. That is his discipline.

  202. And when he hears the news,

  203. he returns.

  204. He returns to rebuild.

  205. I taught on a week on Nehemiah,

  206. and there was a guy who was sat down near the front,

  207. and all the way through,

  208. I just knew that the Lord was impacting his life through prayer.

  209. He wrote to me two weeks after,

  210. to say,

  211. the teaching on Nehemiah and on prayer has transformed my life.

  212. And he said,

  213. I have been totally unsupportive of my church for most of the last two years.

  214. And he said,

  215. I realised that I needed to change.

  216. I realised that prayer should encourage me and empower my leadership.

  217. And then I had a letter from his church leader another week after that,

  218. to say what a difference that had made,

  219. and that he was now really focused, again,

  220. back into the life of the church.

  221. Prayer,

  222. and prayer can make such a difference.

  223. It changes from the outside in,

  224. from an excited cupbearer to the king,

  225. to a man who goes back in Nehemiah

  226. and transforms the people in his community.

  227. Open,

  228. responsive,

  229. inquisitive.

  230. That's how our disciplined prayer life should be.

  231. Are we asking God to show us

  232. the way forward?

  233. Are we asking God for a prophetic word?

  234. How can we invite him into our lives fully,

  235. more and more?

  236. Because often God is knocking,

  237. and we're not engaging.

  238. As a nine-year-old,

  239. I stood in front of this picture

  240. in St. Paul's Cathedral.

  241. It's called,

  242. it's by Holman Hunt,

  243. and it's called Lights of the World.

  244. In this picture,

  245. there is,

  246. I remember as a nine-year-old on a school trip,

  247. we stood there.

  248. I thought the man that was showing us

  249. was actually,

  250. had been there when they actually painted the picture.

  251. He was sort of seen that old.

  252. But what he told us came to light,

  253. that actually,

  254. if you notice on the door,

  255. that there is no handle on the outside of the door.

  256. that there is ivy that has been growing around the door,

  257. and clearly this door hasn't been opened for a long, long time.

  258. And yet Jesus stands there patiently,

  259. waiting to bring the light into the life,

  260. whoever decides to open that door.

  261. I've used this image time and time again on Alpha courses,

  262. when we talk about prayer.

  263. So many people say,

  264. I just want to open the door.

  265. Maybe you've opened only the door a little way,

  266. in your discipline.

  267. The light still comes in.

  268. Maybe it's time for people to open the door even wider,

  269. and let the light come,

  270. and actually see that relationship,

  271. how it builds as the light comes in.

  272. Some people just maybe just,

  273. who cares,

  274. just fling the door open.

  275. The one thing is,

  276. the handle isn't on the outside,

  277. because unlike I used to do,

  278. the Lord doesn't come and crash your door

  279. at three o'clock in the morning.

  280. He's waiting for us to invite him.

  281. He's waiting for that invitation,

  282. from each one of us,

  283. to open that door and say,

  284. in our own discipline of prayer,

  285. more of you, Lord.

  286. More of you in our lives.

  287. And perhaps that's where we are.

  288. We may be, in our prayer life,

  289. reticent to open the door wider,

  290. because it may mean that we have to change.

  291. Who goes from a cupbearer to the king,

  292. which was fairly comfortable,

  293. to go back to the holy city,

  294. to regather a people,

  295. with all the controversy that brings,

  296. and everything that that brought,

  297. working against him,

  298. to rebuild the city walls,

  299. to rebuild the people.

  300. It means change.

  301. And maybe today we need to intentionally

  302. open the door a little further.

  303. Adrian Rogers says,

  304. the prayer offered to God in the morning

  305. during the quiet time

  306. is the key that unlocks the door of the day.

  307. Any athlete knows that it is the start

  308. that ensures a good finish.

  309. It's one thing I'd encourage you to encourage you with

  310. is maybe as we pray,

  311. that you start your day in prayer.

  312. Maybe each of us have got our own way of doing that.

  313. Maybe we don't.

  314. But could I encourage you,

  315. what is your start for the day?

  316. I personally like a good breakfast.

  317. You know,

  318. I'm not talking about eggs and bacon and everything.

  319. I'm talking a good bowl of muesli.

  320. You know,

  321. keeps me regular for the day in more than one way.

  322. And the thing is,

  323. is the thing about a good start to the day

  324. is maybe your prayer at the beginning of the day

  325. is,

  326. Lord,

  327. I offer myself to you.

  328. My morning prayer is,

  329. Lord,

  330. help me not to miss the opportunities.

  331. That you lay before me.

  332. That's my daily prayer in the morning.

  333. Whatever your prayer might be.

  334. And I would encourage you to start that day.

  335. We as a team,

  336. many on the team here,

  337. use Lectio 365.

  338. And the Lectio 365 is really easy.

  339. It's a downloadable podcast.

  340. You get a scripture in the morning.

  341. And for me,

  342. I find it really helpful

  343. because you can listen to it

  344. while you have a cup of tea.

  345. And that scripture during the day

  346. and that prayer for the day

  347. helps you through.

  348. A good start to the day

  349. is a good way to start.

  350. And if your discipline seems rigid

  351. and the ivy has grown over the door,

  352. the hinges seem seized,

  353. God's strangely inaccessible,

  354. then perhaps Pete Gregg's words may help us

  355. as he spoke about this very issue

  356. about a discipline of prayer.

  357. Because what he said was,

  358. sometimes I miss God's presence

  359. because he no longer appears to me

  360. or speaks to me

  361. in the familiar ways of yesterday.

  362. Sometimes when I think God has gone silent,

  363. it's actually that he is speaking differently

  364. in a different dialect,

  365. more appropriate to the new landscape

  366. I'm about to enter.

  367. If I remain locked in the past

  368. by tradition, nostalgia,

  369. or a stale imagination,

  370. I will most certainly miss the new thing

  371. that the now God is forever saying.

  372. That's certainly been the story of my life,

  373. of wanting to be where the now God is,

  374. where God is at work.

  375. The discipline of prayer is a relationship.

  376. I'm going to end,

  377. when I sensed,

  378. as I was thinking about this today,

  379. maybe a prophetic word

  380. to bring.

  381. And we've talked about prayer.

  382. In our culture,

  383. we need a more resilient form of discipleship.

  384. Like many of you,

  385. you may have been

  386. put off from praying with people

  387. because the culture around you

  388. says that you can't.

  389. Maybe you're in a setting

  390. where I better not do this

  391. because I might lose my job.

  392. I better not do this

  393. because I'm going to get disciplined.

  394. I better not do this.

  395. I would want to encourage you

  396. that there is numerous ways

  397. of praying for and with people

  398. to encourage them

  399. and to build them up.

  400. And I sense this,

  401. that Jesus frees us from our sin.

  402. He can heal.

  403. He can bring new life

  404. into shattered and broken lives.

  405. And I felt this word this morning

  406. would be,

  407. if we went into A&E,

  408. if we went into A&E

  409. and the person welcoming us

  410. said,

  411. oh, do you like the new decor?

  412. Do you like our new chairs?

  413. Oh, by the way,

  414. let me show you

  415. this new piece of equipment

  416. we've just bought.

  417. It's over here.

  418. Isn't it nice and shiny?

  419. Now, the one reason

  420. you've walked into A&E

  421. is because you want to be healed,

  422. because you're in need.

  423. I'm just wondering

  424. how many people we meet,

  425. how many people walk

  426. into our churches,

  427. maybe us,

  428. who would walk out

  429. through that door,

  430. who would walk out

  431. in the end of the day

  432. having not met

  433. with the healing power of Jesus

  434. that we can offer

  435. in prayer

  436. and the way we want to share.

  437. In our society,

  438. that's focused on idolatry.

  439. There is an opposition

  440. in our lives.

  441. In John's Gospel,

  442. it says,

  443. for they loved human praise

  444. more than praise from God.

  445. They loved human praise

  446. more than praise from God.

  447. I pray

  448. that as we look

  449. at our discipline in prayer,

  450. we will hear that

  451. well done from God.

  452. Well done,

  453. good and faithful servant,

  454. that you responded.

  455. Well done,

  456. good and faithful servant,

  457. that you sent that word

  458. that you had.

  459. Good and faithful servant,

  460. that you encouraged

  461. that person that you met.

  462. Good and faithful servant,

  463. that you responded

  464. as you've been praying,

  465. as you go around,

  466. whether you're in the market,

  467. whether you're out there,

  468. wherever we're doing,

  469. that you responded

  470. to his prompting,

  471. whatever that may be,

  472. and it may just be a smile,

  473. it may just be a welcome,

  474. it may be a card,

  475. it may even,

  476. if appropriate,

  477. being to pray with somebody.

  478. What is our discipline

  479. of prayer

  480. that is 24-7?

  481. Gillian,

  482. would you like to come up

  483. with a team?

  484. We're just going to pray

  485. that God would maybe

  486. give us a fresh boldness

  487. in our discipline of prayer.

  488. Maybe you're like that person

  489. who's walking into A&E

  490. and you've felt

  491. that you've walked in

  492. and out of this church

  493. time and time and time again,

  494. but you walk out the door

  495. without that healing power

  496. that you've often

  497. come searching for.

  498. There'll be people

  499. to pray with you now

  500. at the back

  501. and the prayer ministry team

  502. are going to move

  503. to the back

  504. and if that's you

  505. and you would like

  506. to pray with somebody,

  507. do that now

  508. because people are waiting

  509. to pray with you.

  510. may well be

  511. there has been

  512. that undercurrent

  513. of God isn't

  514. my steering wheel

  515. and has always been

  516. my spare tyre.

  517. Maybe you want to put him

  518. in the driving seat

  519. and that can be risky

  520. because it may need change.

  521. Maybe we're prepared

  522. for that,

  523. that Lord,

  524. you would take me

  525. to places

  526. and to people

  527. and give me the courage

  528. and boldness

  529. to respond

  530. when you do that,

  531. that discipline of prayer.

  532. Maybe today

  533. to think,

  534. what is that discipline

  535. in my life?

  536. A good discipline

  537. that encourages

  538. and builds me up

  539. and brings joy

  540. rather than a chore

  541. or something

  542. that I can't do.

  543. As we finish,

  544. we're going to

  545. just pray a prayer

  546. that's in the Lectio 365

  547. which we pray

  548. every day.

  549. Every morning

  550. becomes part

  551. of my prayer life

  552. and maybe

  553. many others

  554. of you here.

  555. Maybe you'd just like

  556. to pray that with me.

  557. Holy Spirit,

  558. should we just come?

  559. Holy Spirit,

  560. would you come?

  561. And instill

  562. that spirit

  563. of freshness

  564. and newness

  565. and new life

  566. that you bring

  567. in our prayer life

  568. and in our discipline.

  569. Father,

  570. help me to live

  571. this day

  572. to the full,

  573. being true

  574. to you

  575. in every way.

  576. Jesus,

  577. help me

  578. to give myself

  579. away to others,

  580. being kind

  581. to everyone

  582. I meet.

  583. Spirit,

  584. help me

  585. to love

  586. the lost,

  587. proclaiming Christ

  588. in all I do

  589. and all I say.

  590. And the people said,

  591. Amen.
