  1. Good morning, everyone.

  2. May we bow our heads and pray together before we look at God's Word together.

  3. Father, I pray that you would take my feeble words and in the power of your Spirit, change

  4. them into life-giving words.

  5. Father, we pray that this morning, even in this extreme heat, Father, you would be able

  6. to send down your fire upon us.

  7. Lord, that we might be the people that you call us to be in Jesus Christ, our Lord.

  8. Amen.

  9. So a verse from Ephesians chapter 4, Paul says this, as a prisoner for the Lord there, then

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  10. I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.

  11. The German theologian Jürgen Moltmann, in an interview that was done just a few months

  12. ago, he's a very elderly man now.

  13. He's been a very influential theologian, though I would suspect most of you have never heard

  14. of him.

  15. Moltmann said this, he said, the opposite of poverty is not wealth, it's community.

  16. Let me say that again.

  17. I want you to lodge that thought in your mind as I proceed with this talk.

  18. Come to think about it, I don't think in the Jewish council of Sanhedrin there was much

  19. talk about social mobility or anything like that.

  20. But somehow that early Christian community lived in an amazing way that we read in Acts chapter

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  21. 4 and verse 36, check it out if you don't believe me, that there were no needy persons among

  22. them.

  23. Why was that?

  24. Because they were living in community.

  25. What does it mean to live in community?

  26. Well, a community is a people group, but not all people groups are communities.

  27. Because a community is defined by one really important aspect, and it's this.

  28. It's defined by the fact that when we are in community, we start to take responsibility for one another.

  29. When one of us weeps, we all weep.

  30. When one of us rejoices, we all rejoice.

  31. When one of us is in need, we respond faithfully to that need.

  32. Some of you are sitting there saying to yourselves, well, hang on, that sounds a bit inward looking.

  33. That sounds a bit like cozy Christianity, if ever I heard of it.

  34. Except that God expects Christian community to spill out into the community around us.

  35. Tim, I think, used the phrase when he prayed for us just now.

  36. To serve the community.

  37. The Christian community will never be content to just serve its own needs.

  38. It will have its eyes open to the world.

  39. I think it was William Booth who said, was it not, that he always had an open Bible, but also an open newspaper.

  40. So let me ask you a question.

  41. Do you think the church of God creates community?

  42. Or do you think the church of God works best where there is an existing community that it can kind of latch on to?

  43. Don't shout your answer out, but just think about that for a moment.

  44. It's a very critical question in its way.

  45. Well, the research, I think, is probably a bit counterintuitive.

  46. It's what the research, and to be truthful, the research is not what you would call, you know, there are not huge volumes of it.

  47. But what the research tends to point towards is that the church does best where there is an existing community that it can work with.

  48. In a previous life, when I was the Bishop of Buckingham, I had the privilege of having Milton Keynes within my jurisdiction.

  49. In Milton Keynes, miraculously, the church in those days, that was in like 1972, was actually invited to be a part of the Milton Keynes Development Corporation.

  50. And boy, did they milk it.

  51. They made sure that there were allotted land to build churches in every second grid square in Milton Keynes.

  52. They applied funding to Milton Keynes to make sure that in every other grid square there was a full-time clergy person and it was ecumenical.

  53. So very often there were four or five full-time clergy working in an ecumenical parish, which consisted of two grid squares in Milton Keynes.

  54. Probably top-end 7,000 people.

  55. Let me tell you, even today, Milton Keynes is a massive red mark on the accounts of the Diocese of Oxford.

  56. Very few of those churches have reached what you might call a critical mass that's needed to run a church in the 21st century.

  57. Very few of them have even 100 members, never mind the 150 members that most church growth people would consider.

  58. Why was that?

  59. Well, it was trying to create church, community ex nihilo.

  60. That means from nothing.

  61. The church has always done better, though in our time it's not doing particularly well at the moment.

  62. But the church has always done really well when it can fasten on to an existing community.

  63. You know what people tell me about Clevedon?

  64. They tell me that what they like about Clevedon is that sense of community.

  65. That should make us open our eyes, start to breathe a little more heavily, and let our heartbeats become a little quicker, unless you've got a heart issue.

  66. Okay.

  67. So, does the church live in community today?

  68. Well, researchers have looked at Christians over the years in terms of three sorts of Christians.

  69. One is what they call committed Christians.

  70. Those are people who regularly attend church, regularly give of their income, regularly pray,

  71. regularly can give some evidence that their whole lives are based on the leadership and the guidance of God.

  72. Then there are what researchers call cynical Christians.

  73. Those are people who were Christians and are now no longer Christians, sorry, are no longer involved with the church,

  74. though they would still claim to be Christians, but the church has put them dramatically off expressing their faith.

  75. Frighteningly, they are a growing number of people, and we can be critical of them, but of course,

  76. really what we ought to do is look in the mirror and ask ourselves as a church,

  77. what is so wrong with us that people who are once on fire with for the Lord will no longer come anywhere near us?

  78. And indeed, if you get them on the subject of church,

  79. you will start to imagine that they've had a sudden attack of Tourette's syndrome or something.

  80. The third kind of Christian proliferates in the Church of England.

  81. They're called cultural Christians.

  82. They're people who generally subscribe to the idea of church.

  83. They may send their children to church schools.

  84. They may even attend church on a relatively regular basis.

  85. They may even give some of their money to the church.

  86. But actually, they have never appropriated, they've never made their own the message of the gospel.

  87. The thing about committed Christians is this.

  88. Their research consistently shows that in any one church,

  89. 20% of the membership of that church falls into the committed Christian delineation.

  90. 80% do not, for different reasons.

  91. That means that in most churches, 20% of the people provide 80% of the money,

  92. 80% of the horsepower, 80% of the gifts, 80% of just about blooming well everything.

  93. While the other 80% passively watch on.

  94. I want to say to you, I know some of you,

  95. and I know that some of you are very committed Christians,

  96. and I thank God for that.

  97. But I will thank God even more,

  98. when the 80% of our church,

  99. that actually allows the 20% to supply all the horsepower and the money, etc., etc.,

  100. step up,

  101. and make it 21%,

  102. 22%,

  103. 23%.

  104. And I want you to think about that,

  105. because I'm going to ask you,

  106. at the end of this message,

  107. whether or not you're prepared to stand up,

  108. not literally,

  109. well, maybe literally,

  110. to stand up and say,

  111. from today onwards,

  112. I am going to put myself in that 20% bracket.

  113. Because unless we do,

  114. we will never start to be the church that God calls us to be.

  115. I don't know how much you read your Bibles,

  116. but I do know this,

  117. that if you read the Acts of the Apostles,

  118. you would realize this,

  119. you would realize that that church functioned as a community.

  120. Here's a novel idea, Acts chapter 2, verse 44, I think it is,

    Acts 2:44

  121. where the writer tells us, Luke tells us,

  122. that when someone was in need,

  123. they would sell their possessions to meet that other person's need.

  124. Friends, we're a long way away from that.

  125. Can you imagine a day,

  126. when we could put our hands up in church and say,

  127. there are no needy people amongst us,

  128. because we live as a community,

  129. and we take responsibility for each other.

  130. When somebody weeps, we weep.

  131. When somebody rejoices, we rejoice.

  132. When somebody is in need,

  133. we respond generously.

  134. Firstly,

  135. so, we come to Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  136. I'm sorry for a long introduction.

  137. Okay, this tests your forgiveness level.

  138. Ephesians chapter 4, verses 1 to 16.

    Ephesians 4:1–16

  139. What Paul is doing there,

  140. is doing something really important for us to pay attention to today.

  141. He is giving a thumbprint of what the church should look like.

  142. And he has three things that he says there,

  143. conveniently for my message.

  144. The first thing is, he says,

  145. unity, unity is critical.

  146. The second thing he says is,

  147. slightly ambiguously,

  148. is that diversity is important.

  149. And the third thing he says is,

  150. if we're getting this right,

  151. we're going to grow up.

  152. You know, I know

  153. a lot of members of churches are,

  154. you know, middle-aged to elderly,

  155. and that's great.

  156. But don't assume,

  157. because you're middle-aged or elderly,

  158. that you're mature.

  159. Some of the most childish people I know are old.

  160. I may be one of them.

  161. So, unity.

  162. Paul says,

  163. endeavity,

  164. endeavour,

  165. endeavour.

  166. You've got to put effort

  167. into the idea

  168. that the church would be unified.

  169. Of course,

  170. Paul didn't know about ecumenism.

  171. He didn't have a clue about Methodists or Baptists,

  172. because they'd not been invented at this stage.

  173. Paul was talking about us,

  174. the local church.

  175. He's saying,

  176. the way it's meant to work is like this,

  177. that where there are differences amongst you,

  178. Jesus has given you the resources

  179. to offer forgiveness to one another.

  180. This is not a place

  181. where we excel

  182. in trolling each other on social media.

  183. This is not a place

  184. where we gossip behind people's backs,

  185. although we've invented a language

  186. for doing that, haven't we?

  187. Isn't it great

  188. when you hear one Christian say,

  189. I just want to share with you about Harry,

  190. when basically what they're going to do

  191. is some character assassination attempt.

  192. Now, Paul says,

  193. we've got to work hard

  194. at unifying.

  195. Now, the trouble is,

  196. that it'd be easy

  197. if we were all the same,

  198. wouldn't it?

  199. Come on to this,

  200. we're all very different.

  201. We hold different opinions.

  202. I mean, in my view,

  203. some people's opinions are bonkers,

  204. but it's their opinion.

  205. And what I mustn't do,

  206. said Paul,

  207. is fall out with them.

  208. Paul uses

  209. a very interesting analogy there.

  210. I don't know if you noticed it

  211. in the first four or five verses.

  212. He uses the analogy

  213. of God the Holy Trinity,

  214. Father,

  215. Son,

  216. and Holy Spirit.

  217. And just as these are one

  218. and all one,

  219. but they are separate,

  220. different,

  221. so they work together

  222. in unity.

  223. It would be unthinkable

  224. that the Holy Trinity,

  225. you know,

  226. that the Holy Spirit

  227. would do a bit of muttering

  228. about Jesus

  229. or vice versa.

  230. So we're called,

  231. literally,

  232. to love one another

  233. with agape love.

  234. That doesn't mean

  235. I can feel good

  236. about everybody in church,

  237. but it does mean

  238. I can want the best for them.

  239. I can set my heart

  240. to want the best for them.

  241. Second thing is,

  242. slightly ambiguously,

  243. the diversity of the church.

  244. Paul says in Ephesians 4,

  245. round about verse 7,

  246. he said,

  247. to each one of us,

  248. grace has been given

  249. as Christ apportioned it.

  250. The scholars think

  251. that what Paul is talking about there

  252. is the gifts,

  253. the charismata,

  254. the gifts of God's grace.

  255. Here's the truth.

  256. If you are a believer,

  257. if you cross the line

  258. and accepted the gospel,

  259. then God has given you

  260. spiritual gifts.

  261. And let me tell you

  262. that one of the reasons

  263. why a lot of people

  264. are frustrated in churches

  265. is very simply this,

  266. that they don't know

  267. what their spiritual gifts are

  268. and therefore

  269. they can't exercise them.

  270. So church, to them,

  271. can feel all push,

  272. all shove.

  273. No freedom,

  274. no liberation

  275. to exercise my gifts.

  276. We have different gifts.

  277. Paul makes that clear

  278. in Romans

  279. and in the Corinthian literature.

  280. He makes it very clear.

  281. There's lists of gifts there.

  282. I don't think they're meant

  283. to be exhaustive lists,

  284. but there are lists there.

  285. And what Paul is saying is,

  286. though we all have different gifts,

  287. we're supposed to work

  288. like a body.

  289. You remember Paul uses

  290. that phrase a lot,

  291. the body of Christ.

  292. And he says,

  293. when a body's working healthily,

  294. all its parts work in unity.

  295. Some of you at the age,

  296. I'm one of them,

  297. you know,

  298. I'm starting to realize

  299. that my body's not quite

  300. as in unity as it used to be.

  301. But nevertheless,

  302. that's the ideal.

  303. that when we offer our gifts

  304. to serve one another

  305. and to serve the world,

  306. then the church becomes

  307. what God intended it to be.

  308. So a church where there's

  309. no relational unity,

  310. a church where half the membership

  311. don't have a clue

  312. what their spiritual gifts are.

  313. By the way,

  314. not all spiritual gifts are weird.

  315. If you're sitting there

  316. and your weird meter

  317. is starting to flicker

  318. with talks of spiritual gifts,

  319. let me just reassure you,

  320. it's not like that.

  321. Some of those gifts

  322. are very basic gifts.

  323. You know what Paul says

  324. is a gift?

  325. If Catherine was in here,

  326. she's not right now,

  327. she'd be very pleased to know

  328. that the gift of administration

  329. is written down there.

  330. That's not spooky,

  331. is it?

  332. That's kind of down-to-earth,

  333. everyday,

  334. necessary gift

  335. for the successful running

  336. of any organization.

  337. Paul says,

  338. leadership is a gift.

  339. That's not spooky.

  340. I mean,

  341. there's been more stuff

  342. written about leadership

  343. in the last 30 years

  344. than just about

  345. any other subject

  346. than non-fictional literature.

  347. So we're supposed to be a place

  348. where we get on together

  349. despite our differences,

  350. and in fact,

  351. what we need to do

  352. is to learn to celebrate

  353. our differences.

  354. I don't know what you do,

  355. you know,

  356. when somebody comes up

  357. and verbalizes

  358. an opinion

  359. that you think is,

  360. you don't think much of.

  361. I have a friend like this

  362. and she constantly

  363. is saying things

  364. that I think are just loony.

  365. Right?

  366. She's not a Christian.

  367. And if I even

  368. try and scratch the surface

  369. of why she would

  370. conceivably think this,

  371. she goes ape,

  372. starts shouting,

  373. listen,

  374. we can't be like that.

  375. Relational unity

  376. is critical

  377. to an effective church.

  378. and trust me,

  379. I can tell you

  380. that the one thing

  381. that messes up a church

  382. just about more

  383. than anything else

  384. is where bad relationships exist.

  385. Up and down this country,

  386. I can only speak about

  387. the Church of England

  388. because it's the only one

  389. I got real experience of.

  390. Up and down this country,

  391. there are churches

  392. where two or three people

  393. cause mayhem

  394. and nobody

  395. loves them enough

  396. to challenge them.

  397. Notice the way I put that.

  398. Nobody loves them enough

  399. to challenge them.

  400. Diversity is important

  401. because God made us different

  402. and gave us different gifts

  403. and what we're supposed to do

  404. is bring those gifts,

  405. offer them to Jesus

  406. and see the ministry

  407. of the church go.

  408. And finally,

  409. maturity.

  410. I know you're all too humble

  411. to admit

  412. that you might be mature.

  413. And it's very difficult

  414. to assess

  415. other than

  416. maybe the people

  417. who love you enough

  418. to tell you the truth

  419. might give you

  420. an angle on that.

  421. But Paul says

  422. this is really important

  423. that we don't end up

  424. being the kind of people

  425. who become captive

  426. to wrong-headed ideas

  427. in society

  428. and in the world

  429. and in the church.

  430. I used to speak

  431. on a speaking circuit

  432. with a former bishop.

  433. Not even sure

  434. whether he's still alive.

  435. He was the bishop of Durham.

  436. He was very controversial.

  437. Some of you will remember

  438. that he articulated

  439. the belief

  440. that as a bishop

  441. he no longer believed

  442. in the physical resurrection

  443. of Jesus.

  444. Don't ask me out.

  445. I ended up

  446. on speaking platforms

  447. with him.

  448. And

  449. I would speak

  450. about the church

  451. and the future

  452. and he would speak

  453. about faith

  454. and the future.

  455. Incidentally

  456. he thought

  457. very passionately

  458. that 9-11

  459. changed everything.

  460. I don't know

  461. if he was right

  462. about that

  463. but it interested me

  464. that he would say it.

  465. I tell you

  466. what I really loved

  467. about this man.

  468. I never saw him speak

  469. when he didn't

  470. break down in tears

  471. and say

  472. that the cost

  473. of discipleship

  474. for him

  475. was crucifying.

  476. And the reason

  477. that impressed me

  478. was

  479. I thought

  480. wow

  481. that's exceptional

  482. to hear that kind

  483. actually

  484. the cost

  485. of discipleship

  486. for every believer

  487. should be crucifying.

  488. It should cost us.

  489. Jesus didn't assume

  490. there would be

  491. some brothers

  492. and sisters

  493. within the new

  494. community

  495. of Christians

  496. who would pay

  497. that cost

  498. and some who

  499. would just get

  500. away with it.

  501. No.

  502. All of us

  503. should bear

  504. that cost.

  505. So where's

  506. all this

  507. leading us?

  508. Well I want

  509. to say this

  510. and I don't

  511. often feel

  512. I have a prophetic

  513. word to the church

  514. but I do

  515. want to say

  516. if ever

  517. the church

  518. you and me

  519. needed

  520. to be

  521. a true

  522. community

  523. in the light

  524. of COVID

  525. it would be

  526. now.

  527. there are

  528. a lot

  529. of bereaved

  530. a lot

  531. of lonely

  532. a lot

  533. of empty

  534. a lot

  535. of angry

  536. a lot

  537. of emotionally

  538. tied up

  539. people

  540. in our

  541. community

  542. who

  543. desperately

  544. need

  545. to be

  546. set free

  547. and what

  548. they don't

  549. need at

  550. this stage

  551. in their

  552. life

  553. is a

  554. church

  555. that

  556. would

  557. put

  558. them

  559. off

  560. forever.

  561. Remember

  562. Nietzsche

  563. in one

  564. of his

  565. novels

  566. writes

  567. about

  568. the

  569. madman

  570. who

  571. was

  572. sitting

  573. on the

  574. steps

  575. of the

  576. church

  577. screaming

  578. God

  579. is

  580. dead

  581. God

  582. is

  583. dead

  584. God

  585. is

  586. dead

  587. and

  588. the

  589. people

  590. went

  591. up

  592. to

  593. him

  594. and

  595. they

  596. said

  597. to

  598. him

  599. why

  600. do

  601. you

  602. think

  603. God

  604. is

  605. dead

  606. and

  607. his

  608. answer

  609. was

  610. very

  611. simple

  612. he

  613. said

  614. because

  615. I

  616. went

  617. to

  618. church

  619. I

  620. think

  621. it

  622. was

  623. Oscar

  624. Wilde

  625. who

  626. said

  627. a

  628. cocktail

  629. party

  630. is

  631. a

  632. social

  633. device

  634. designed

  635. to

  636. help

  637. people

  638. not

  639. meet

  640. each

  641. other

  642. wouldn't

  643. it

  644. be a

  645. tragedy

  646. if

  647. a

  648. church

  649. was

  650. a

  651. place

  652. where

  653. people

  654. were

  655. put

  656. off

  657. from

  658. meeting

  659. with

  660. God

  661. church

  662. is

  663. not

  664. going

  665. to

  666. set

  667. you

  668. free

  669. friends

  670. God

  671. is

  672. going

  673. to

  674. set

  675. you

  676. free

  677. and

  678. the

  679. reason

  680. we

  681. need

  682. to

  683. live

  684. truly

  685. as

  686. community

  687. let me

  688. tell you

  689. as a

  690. church

  691. in

  692. Bristol

  693. where

  694. 150

  695. of

  696. them

  697. have

  698. actually

  699. moved

  700. out

  701. of

  702. their

  703. homes

  704. and

  705. lived

  706. together

  707. in

  708. community

  709. I'm

  710. not

  711. asking

  712. you

  713. to

  714. do

  715. that

  716. though

  717. you

  718. might

  719. consider

  720. it

  721. I'm

  722. saying

  723. community

  724. starts

  725. where

  726. we

  727. start

  728. to

  729. take

  730. responsibility

  731. for

  732. one

  733. another

  734. and it

  735. continues

  736. where we

  737. start to

  738. take

  739. responsibility

  740. for the

  741. thousands of

  742. people in

  743. this town

  744. who are

  745. not in

  746. church

  747. today

  748. and what

  749. will make

  750. the difference

  751. is when

  752. those of

  753. you who

  754. are

  755. what

  756. Dan

  757. Postieski

  758. calls

  759. decaffeinated

  760. Christians

  761. that is

  762. your

  763. Christianity

  764. is designed

  765. not to keep

  766. you awake

  767. at night

  768. when

  769. you

  770. the

  771. 80%

  772. decide to

  773. step up

  774. and become

  775. part of

  776. the 20%

  777. so the

  778. 20%

  779. is no

  780. longer

  781. 20%

  782. it's

  783. 21%

  784. it's

  785. 22%

  786. final

  787. word

  788. David

  789. Putnam

  790. in his

  791. unbelievable

  792. book

  793. I don't

  794. think he's

  795. a Christian

  796. and he's

  797. looked at

  798. a lot of

  799. evidence in

  800. America

  801. but he

  802. says that

  803. what's true

  804. in America

  805. is true

  806. in the

  807. western

  808. world

  809. the book

  810. is called

  811. Bowling

  812. Alone

  813. it speaks

  814. of the

  815. phenomenon

  816. that

  817. ten pin

  818. bowling

  819. which was

  820. designed

  821. as a

  822. game to

  823. build

  824. social

  825. capital

  826. is now

  827. undertaken

  828. by people

  829. who just

  830. go to

  831. the bowling

  832. alley

  833. on their

  834. own

  835. and bowl

  836. balls

  837. down

  838. I've

  839. seen

  840. that

  841. golf

  842. course

  843. friends

  844. two of

  845. them

  846. around

  847. Clevedon

  848. I've

  849. seen so

  850. many

  851. people

  852. playing

  853. golf

  854. on their

  855. own

  856. Partnum

  857. is saying

  858. that in

  859. western

  860. society

  861. social

  862. capital

  863. is

  864. breaking

  865. down

  866. and

  867. covid

  868. pandemics

  869. accelerate

  870. that process

  871. here's the

  872. prophetic word

  873. if there

  874. ever was

  875. a moment

  876. for the

  877. church to

  878. step up

  879. and truly

  880. be community

  881. it would

  882. be now

  883. so I

  884. ask you

  885. I plead

  886. with you

  887. those of

  888. you know

  889. you're in

  890. the 80%

  891. bracket

  892. are you

  893. going to

  894. step up

  895. are you

  896. going to

  897. help this

  898. local church

  899. be the

  900. local

  901. church

  902. that God

  903. called us

  904. to be

  905. friends

  906. I join

  907. with St.

  908. Paul in

  909. urging you

  910. urging you

  911. pleading with

  912. you

  913. begging you

  914. let's try

  915. living a

  916. life

  917. worthy of

  918. the calling

  919. we've

  920. received

  921. in the name

  922. of our

  923. amazing God

  924. Father

  925. Son

  926. and Holy

  927. Spirit

  928. and the

  929. people

  930. who agreed

  931. woke up

  932. and said

  933. together

  934. Amen

  935. to be

  936. a

  937. John
