  1. Good morning, everyone. Today we are continuing on our theme of prayer and I've been asked to talk about faithful prayer.

  2. But before I begin, let's just bow our heads and pray together.

  3. Lord, we thank you for the amazing gift of prayer.

  4. And Father, amazing though that gift is, sometimes it feels really confusing to us because our prayers are not apparently answered in the way we want.

  5. And so Lord, we pray today that you would teach us from your word, that we might truly understand afresh what it means to pray faithfully.

  6. And we ask this in your son's name. Amen.

  7. Mark chapter 11, Jesus says these words, have faith in God.

    Mark 11 chapter mention

  8. Have faith in God.

  9. In the year of my birth, 1949, a remarkable intervention of God happened on some islands north of Scotland called the Hebrides.

  10. An elderly couple of women who were sisters, Christine and Peggy Smith, have been praying together for a very long time,

  11. based on a verse in Isaiah chapter 64, which inspired them to pray week in, week out.

    Isaiah 64 chapter mention

  12. And this is the verse.

  13. The Lord says,

  14. Meeting together, praying around this promise of God in Isaiah.

  15. At the same time, a group of men had been meeting in a barn on the Hebrides, not far away,

  16. and they'd been praying faithfully.

  17. That God would intervene.

  18. That he would bring about what theologians call revival.

  19. That is something only God can do.

  20. One of the men who was a minister, in somewhat despair, said one night,

  21. he said, I think we're wasting our time praying.

  22. He said, because it says in Psalm 24,

  23. who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?

  24. In other words, who will come into the Lord's presence?

  25. He who has clean hands and a pure heart.

  26. I think, he said, we're wasting our time praying that God will intervene in our islands,

  27. unless we seek forgiveness of our sin.

  28. That night, at 2 a.m. in the morning, God broke through.

  29. All over the island, in the cottages, the cross as they call them up there,

  30. lights went on.

  31. And people were found in the streets of the Orkneys,

  32. repenting and seeking God.

  33. That's what revival is.

  34. It's an intervention of God.

  35. And only God can intervene.

  36. We're thinking today about faithful prayer.

  37. What a challenging idea that is for many of us.

  38. I want today just to say three things.

  39. I've been told my time is limited.

  40. I mean, I don't mean I'm going to die.

  41. Anything's possible.

  42. What I mean is

  43. that

  44. during the summer months,

  45. we kind of abbreviate the services a bit.

  46. So three things.

  47. The first thing is

  48. have faith in God.

  49. Very interesting.

  50. You will realize that

  51. Jesus spoke the language of Aramaic,

  52. which is a kind of variation of Hebrew.

  53. The New Testament in its original form

  54. was written in Greek,

  55. and then it's been translated into English.

  56. So by the time we get it,

  57. it has been slightly

  58. mangled, maybe.

  59. But one thing that's very clear

  60. is from the Greek grammar

  61. of that sentence,

  62. the emphasis on that sentence

  63. is on the word God.

  64. And I say that because

  65. I think many of us

  66. place the emphasis,

  67. a lot of preachers do this,

  68. place the emphasis on the word faith.

  69. So we all go home

  70. feeling terrible,

  71. thinking our faith

  72. is not big enough,

  73. whereas in fact,

  74. what Jesus was saying

  75. to his people is,

  76. look,

  77. put the emphasis,

  78. when you pray,

  79. think about God,

  80. not about the size

  81. of your faith.

  82. You remember that

  83. elsewhere,

  84. Jesus says,

  85. if you have faith

  86. the size of a mustard seed,

  87. you'll be able to say

  88. to that mountain,

  89. go throw yourself

  90. into the sea,

  91. and it will happen.

  92. You know how big

  93. a mustard seed is?

  94. It's tiny.

  95. Jesus said,

  96. even if you have

  97. a tiny bit of faith,

  98. amazing things

  99. could happen.

  100. Have faith

  101. in God.

  102. Nowhere in the Bible

  103. does it encourage people

  104. like us

  105. to have faith in faith.

  106. I think there are

  107. some people

  108. who think like that,

  109. but that's never

  110. what the Bible teaches.

  111. The Bible teaches

  112. not how big

  113. is your faith,

  114. but how big

  115. is your God.

  116. When you read

  117. sentences in Scripture

  118. like,

  119. without God,

  120. with God

  121. all things are possible,

  122. do you believe it?

  123. Don't put your hands up.

  124. Do you believe it?

  125. So the first thing is,

  126. if we're going to pray

  127. faithfully,

  128. our focus needs

  129. to be on God,

  130. and we need,

  131. in our minds,

  132. in our souls,

  133. in our hearts,

  134. to imagine

  135. that this God

  136. can do anything.

  137. The second thing

  138. about faithful prayer

  139. is that people

  140. who pray faithfully,

  141. like the old girls

  142. in the Hebrides,

  143. pray persistently.

  144. in Luke chapter 11,

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  145. the disciples

  146. come to Jesus

  147. and they say to Him,

  148. Lord,

  149. teach us how to pray.

  150. And Jesus

  151. gives them

  152. the Lord's prayer

  153. for starters.

  154. And then He says,

  155. a curious little parable,

  156. He says,

  157. what about

  158. if you're lying

  159. in bed one night

  160. and somebody comes

  161. and hammers on

  162. your door

  163. at midnight,

  164. and you shout

  165. out of the window,

  166. and here I'm paraphrasing,

  167. clear off,

  168. it's midnight

  169. and I've already

  170. locked up.

  171. Come back tomorrow.

  172. And the friend

  173. keeps on hammering

  174. on the door.

  175. And eventually,

  176. says Jesus,

  177. the owner of the home

  178. will go downstairs

  179. and open the door.

  180. Why?

  181. Because persistence

  182. pays off.

  183. There is a danger,

  184. another danger,

  185. which Jesus talks about

  186. in the Sermon on the Mount,

  187. where He actually says,

  188. don't babble

  189. like the pagans do.

  190. But persistence

  191. is a very big

  192. New Testament word.

  193. We need to learn

  194. what it is

  195. to pray persistently.

  196. Like Peggy and Christine,

  197. like those men

  198. meeting in a barn,

  199. we need not to give up.

  200. Which will be a challenge

  201. for some of you

  202. because you've never

  203. got started.

  204. Be persistent

  205. in prayer.

  206. The third thing is,

  207. and this may be

  208. the most challenging

  209. and most important

  210. thought of all,

  211. it's this.

  212. In that passage

  213. we read from Mark's Gospel,

  214. again,

  215. in the Greek,

  216. it's full of

  217. conjunctions.

  218. It is

  219. joined up

  220. thinking.

  221. There's a flow

  222. of thought here.

  223. Jesus says this,

  224. look,

  225. have faith in God.

  226. When you pray,

  227. believe that what

  228. you pray for

  229. might happen

  230. and it will be done.

  231. And the third thing is,

  232. when you stand praying,

  233. if you have anything

  234. against anyone,

  235. go and seek

  236. their forgiveness.

  237. Wow.

  238. I could

  239. weigh my hands

  240. in the air

  241. and shout

  242. hallelujah

  243. for the first two,

  244. but

  245. going to seek

  246. forgiveness

  247. from other people?

  248. That is really

  249. hard yards,

  250. isn't it?

  251. The faithful

  252. prayers

  253. understand

  254. that our

  255. horizontal

  256. relationships,

  257. one with another,

  258. will have an impact

  259. on our

  260. vertical

  261. relationship

  262. praying to God.

  263. I wonder

  264. if there's

  265. anybody in the

  266. house

  267. who needs

  268. to pick up

  269. a phone

  270. and make a

  271. call,

  272. get a pen

  273. out or write

  274. a letter,

  275. get a computer

  276. out and do

  277. an email.

  278. and just

  279. say,

  280. I'm sorry.

  281. Because if you

  282. want to be a

  283. faithful prayer,

  284. you really need

  285. to keep a

  286. guard on your

  287. horizontal

  288. relationships,

  289. says Jesus.

  290. When you

  291. stand praying,

  292. if you have

  293. anything against

  294. anyone.

  295. The Bible is

  296. even more

  297. challenging than

  298. that.

  299. In that,

  300. it says,

  301. if you have

  302. something against

  303. your brother,

  304. you go and

  305. put it right.

  306. And the second

  307. thing is,

  308. it says,

  309. if your brother

  310. has something

  311. against you,

  312. you still go

  313. and put it

  314. right.

  315. Have faith in

  316. God,

  317. be persistent

  318. in your

  319. praying,

  320. and be sure

  321. that your

  322. praying will be

  323. regulated

  324. by your

  325. willingness to

  326. forgive others.

  327. God's

  328. God's

  329. peace.

  330. I wonder

  331. if there's

  332. any other

  333. soul in this

  334. church who is

  335. troubled as

  336. I am by

  337. the way the

  338. world is going

  339. in the West.

  340. I wonder if

  341. there's anybody

  342. else in the

  343. house who

  344. wonders what

  345. can be done

  346. here.

  347. We've heard

  348. politicians leap

  349. up making wild

  350. promises just to

  351. attract our

  352. votes.

  353. We're looking

  354. around this

  355. society in

  356. which we

  357. live, and

  358. we're wondering

  359. to ourselves,

  360. has the

  361. Western world

  362. lost its

  363. moral compass?

  364. We're looking

  365. at institutions

  366. which are

  367. broken,

  368. sometimes beyond

  369. repair.

  370. Does it ever,

  371. ever, ever

  372. cross your

  373. mind that

  374. maybe only

  375. God can

  376. sort this

  377. out?

  378. Listen,

  379. friends,

  380. this may be a

  381. wake-up call

  382. for you,

  383. but today I

  384. think we need

  385. to commit

  386. ourselves to

  387. praying for

  388. revival in

  389. our time.

  390. Some of

  391. you do that

  392. already, I

  393. know that.

  394. May God

  395. bless your

  396. persistence in

  397. prayer.

  398. I cannot

  399. myself see a

  400. way out of

  401. these intransigent

  402. problems that we

  403. have in our

  404. culture without

  405. the mighty

  406. intervention of

  407. God.

  408. And if you

  409. agree with me,

  410. and I can't

  411. make you agree

  412. with me,

  413. prayer, I

  414. think we need

  415. to think very

  416. carefully about

  417. this faithful

  418. prayer.

  419. I think we

  420. need to think

  421. very carefully

  422. about whether

  423. we commit

  424. ourselves to

  425. praying faithfully,

  426. persistently,

  427. with an eye to our

  428. horizontal relationships,

  429. for God to

  430. visit our

  431. land.

  432. Come down,

  433. oh love

  434. divine,

  435. come down.

  436. And who

  437. knows what

  438. might happen.

  439. That revival

  440. in the Hebrides

  441. lasted over a

  442. three-year period.

  443. Interestingly,

  444. the biggest town

  445. in the Hebrides,

  446. Stornoway,

  447. was not

  448. impacted at

  449. all.

  450. Why?

  451. Because the

  452. ministers in

  453. that town

  454. were sceptical.

  455. Good Lord,

  456. deliver us

  457. from our

  458. scepticism.

  459. Good Lord,

  460. rekindle our

  461. faith in the

  462. God with whom

  463. all things are

  464. possible.

  465. Good Lord,

  466. send your

  467. fire upon

  468. your church

  469. that we

  470. truly might

  471. pray faithfully

  472. and God

  473. might visit

  474. us afresh

  475. and bring

  476. us alive

  477. in the power

  478. of His

  479. Holy Spirit.

  480. And people

  481. in this town,

  482. in other

  483. towns,

  484. in any

  485. town where

  486. there is

  487. no cynicism

  488. will be

  489. saved.

  490. And the

  491. world will

  492. become a

  493. different place.

  494. Come down,

  495. oh love

  496. divine.

  497. Fill thou

  498. the soul

  499. of mine

  500. and visit

  501. it.

  502. With

  503. thine own

  504. ardour

  505. glowing,

  506. oh comforter,

  507. draw near.

  508. Within my

  509. heart appear

  510. and kindle

  511. it,

  512. thy holy

  513. flame bestowing.

  514. In the name

  515. of our

  516. amazing God,

  517. Father,

  518. Son,

  519. and Holy

  520. Spirit,

  521. and the

  522. people who

  523. agreed,

  524. said together,

  525. singing,

  526. Amen.

  527. Amen.

  528. Amen.

  529. mnie
