  1. Paul wrote in 2 Timothy chapter 3 and verse 1,

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  2. Mark this, there will be terrible times in the last days.

  3. Germaine Greer, who was one of the architects of the new society that emerged in the 1960s,

  4. a woman who wrote that book, The Female Eunuch,

  5. I wouldn't necessarily recommend that you read it, but in it she lays out the principles for the new world

  6. and the new freedom we would find by casting off all restraint.

  7. It was only 15 years later when, interestingly, in a TV interview with Mary Whitehouse,

  8. Germaine Greer conceded, and this is what she said,

  9. she said that when we cast off all restraint,

  10. we thought that we would find freedom only to discover

  11. that we discovered a deeper bondage than the bondage we were trying to leave behind.

  12. I think that was almost a prophetic word.

  13. For the world in general, and the West in particular, is in a mess.

  14. Today is Advent Sunday, a day when the church looks back to that moment when the Son of God

  15. entered the world in the person of Jesus Christ.

  16. But there's a time also, which we're a little more diffident about, understandably,

  17. and that is looking forward to the time when God will pull down the curtain on the whole of human history

  18. and Jesus will return.

  19. We are told very clearly in Scripture, read in Acts chapter 1 if you don't believe me,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  20. that it's not for us to calculate dates or times when Jesus will return.

  21. But it is certainly for disciples of Jesus to seek to read the signs of the times.

  22. Mark this, wrote Paul, there will be terrible times in the last day.

  23. When Paul wrote these words, he was in prison.

  24. He knew that his days were numbered on planet Earth

  25. and that very soon he would be executed by the Roman authorities.

  26. His time was running out.

  27. And so he wrote to this, interestingly, exceptionally young church leader

  28. with some words of advice.

  29. Come back to that.

  30. Mark this.

  31. What that means is pay very careful attention to it.

  32. And then he lists some things that I don't know what you felt when Ros wrote out that list of things to us.

  33. But it doesn't read well, does it?

  34. Two things about what Paul's writing here.

  35. The first thing is, it shouldn't really surprise us.

  36. Paul, in writing to the Christians in Rome, chapter 1,

  37. reminds his readers there,

  38. that godlessness in any society

  39. will have some shocking consequences.

  40. He says there,

  41. in Romans chapter 1 and verse 25,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  42. He says,

  43. they exchanged the glory of the immortal God

  44. for images made to look like mortal men and birds and animals and reptiles.

  45. Verse 25,

  46. they exchanged the truth of God for a lie

  47. and worshipped and served created things

  48. rather than the creator

  49. who is forever praised.

  50. Listen to me, I hope you understand that.

  51. Paul here is saying

  52. there is a fundamental problem

  53. with human beings

  54. and it's this,

  55. that we are always in danger

  56. of confusing the creation,

  57. the things that we enjoy

  58. here on planet Earth

  59. with the creator.

  60. And then the danger becomes

  61. that our minds become focused

  62. on what God has created

  63. rather than the God who created them.

  64. I think we see that

  65. in our times, don't we?

  66. The bondage we thought we were escaping from

  67. feels today like a greater,

  68. like a bondage today

  69. that really is worse than the bondage

  70. we thought we were escaping from.

  71. All this stuff

  72. about the degradation of human life

  73. shouldn't surprise us

  74. in a culture which is godless.

  75. You've only got to look at these statistics

  76. to see that that is a reality.

  77. When I was born in 1949,

  78. almost 90% of the people,

  79. despite a world war,

  80. claimed belief in God.

  81. Today,

  82. that figure has dropped below 50%.

  83. And amongst people

  84. between the ages of 0 and 35,

  85. that has dropped to below 20%.

  86. This does not bode well.

  87. And if that were worrying enough,

  88. the world that we are creating

  89. increasingly, it seems,

  90. is making us ill.

  91. The stress levels,

  92. the rise in mental health issues.

  93. At the moment in our world,

  94. though it's hard for us to imagine,

  95. there are 29 wars going on

  96. and 80 famines.

  97. Friends, this is 2022,

  98. not 1452.

  99. 29 wars

  100. and 80 famines.

  101. I read it on Google,

  102. so it must be true.

  103. Our politicians today

  104. constantly crow about progressive policy.

  105. And what you need to know is,

  106. Michael Blasland,

  107. in his amazing book,

  108. called The Hidden 50%,

  109. makes it very clear

  110. that 90% of policies

  111. inflicted upon us

  112. by democratic governments

  113. do not work.

  114. 90%.

  115. Just think for a moment.

  116. In 1942,

  117. our nation was at war.

  118. There's a man called

  119. William Beveridge,

  120. who was a social reformer,

  121. who wrote what we now call today

  122. the Beveridge Report.

  123. The Beveridge Report

  124. imagined

  125. what would be the priorities

  126. of a post-war government.

  127. He named

  128. what has come to be called

  129. the Five Giants.

  130. The Beveridge Report

  131. were the founding documents

  132. for the National Health Service

  133. and ultimately

  134. the welfare state.

  135. Five Giants.

  136. One was idleness.

  137. He said

  138. post-war governments

  139. would need to create employment.

  140. Well,

  141. it is true today

  142. that we have

  143. a surfeit of jobs available

  144. in the United Kingdom.

  145. The problem is

  146. that the majority of them

  147. are being paid at a rate

  148. that it's cheaper

  149. not to work

  150. than to work.

  151. He said

  152. ignorance

  153. would be another evil,

  154. another giant

  155. that needed to be defeated

  156. and talked about

  157. the need

  158. for an education system

  159. that was all-embracing

  160. and inclusive.

  161. Yet,

  162. 20%

  163. of our children,

  164. your children

  165. in some cases,

  166. leave primary school

  167. without basic skills

  168. in literacy

  169. and numeracy.

  170. Interestingly,

  171. closely correlated

  172. with the number

  173. of free school meals.

  174. The third giant,

  175. he said,

  176. was disease.

  177. There was a need

  178. for a healthcare system

  179. that embraces all

  180. and is free

  181. at the point

  182. of delivery.

  183. I wouldn't say

  184. much more about that

  185. other than dream on.

  186. Squalor

  187. was his fourth giant.

  188. There would be

  189. good quality housing

  190. provided for all citizens.

  191. And just this past

  192. fortnight,

  193. we read of the tragic

  194. story of

  195. Awab Ishak,

  196. a little child

  197. who died

  198. because his

  199. apartment

  200. was so full of

  201. dangerous,

  202. damp spores

  203. that he got a

  204. respiratory disease

  205. and died.

  206. And the final

  207. thing that

  208. Beveridge talked

  209. about

  210. was want.

  211. Poverty

  212. alleviation.

  213. I have no idea

  214. where these figures

  215. come from,

  216. but we're told

  217. that in the coming

  218. months,

  219. millions,

  220. millions of people

  221. in the United

  222. Kingdom,

  223. the seventh

  224. richest economy

  225. in the world,

  226. will be pushed

  227. into poverty.

  228. Let me ask you

  229. a question.

  230. Don't shout out.

  231. But would you say

  232. our so-called

  233. progressive policies,

  234. 80 years on

  235. after Beveridge,

  236. have come home

  237. to roost?

  238. We're in a mess

  239. and one

  240. fundamental

  241. question

  242. should be in the

  243. minds of Christian

  244. disciples and it's

  245. this,

  246. what is God

  247. saying to us

  248. right now?

  249. have we lost

  250. the ability

  251. to listen

  252. to God?

  253. Is our life

  254. so fast track

  255. and microwave

  256. that many of us

  257. don't even find

  258. time to sit down

  259. and try and

  260. listen to God?

  261. And I want to

  262. offload on you

  263. today one very

  264. simple idea.

  265. I think you've seen

  266. this coming.

  267. And it's this.

  268. In a society

  269. which is

  270. increasingly

  271. godless,

  272. terrible,

  273. terrible

  274. consequences

  275. will emerge

  276. for people.

  277. In a godless

  278. society,

  279. people begin

  280. to manifest

  281. characteristics

  282. that are the

  283. mirror opposite

  284. of what Paul

  285. wrote about

  286. in Galatians

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  287. chapter 5.

  288. There Paul is

  289. talking about

  290. the fruit of the

  291. spirit,

  292. characteristics

  293. that should

  294. increasingly mark

  295. the lives of

  296. Christian disciples.

  297. Love, joy,

  298. peace, patience,

  299. kindness,

  300. all these things.

  301. And then you

  302. come to our

  303. text,

  304. 2 Timothy 3

    2 Timothy 3:1–9

  305. verses 1 to

  306. 9.

  307. What will be

  308. the signs of

  309. the times in

  310. these last days

  311. says Paul?

  312. People will be

  313. lovers of

  314. themselves.

  315. I don't know

  316. what kind of

  317. people do this

  318. but some people

  319. apparently like

  320. angling as well

  321. but some people

  322. count the

  323. words in

  324. our media,

  325. in newspapers

  326. and the like

  327. and note which

  328. words are coming

  329. into further

  330. prominence.

  331. You know the

  332. word that is

  333. increased in

  334. prominence the

  335. most in the

  336. media?

  337. The word

  338. self.

  339. We are a

  340. selfie culture

  341. but we're also

  342. a self-obsessed

  343. culture.

  344. The Times

  345. newspaper,

  346. which I

  347. take every

  348. day,

  349. which used

  350. to be a

  351. serious

  352. newspaper,

  353. has a

  354. bit in it

  355. called

  356. Times 2.

  357. This is full

  358. of the most

  359. wrong-headed

  360. ideas imaginable

  361. and at the

  362. same time

  363. it's full of

  364. a lot of

  365. kind of pop

  366. psychology.

  367. Do this

  368. and you will

  369. feel a lot

  370. better about

  371. yourself and

  372. about the

  373. world.

  374. love, joy,

  375. peace, patience,

  376. kindness,

  377. goodness,

  378. faithfulness,

  379. gentleness and

  380. self-control.

  381. Would the

  382. world be a

  383. different place

  384. if people

  385. focused on

  386. these

  387. characteristics

  388. rather than

  389. narcissism,

  390. lovers of

  391. themselves,

  392. lovers of

  393. money,

  394. boastful,

  395. proud,

  396. abusive,

  397. disobedient to

  398. their parents,

  399. ungrateful,

  400. unholy?

  401. It goes on.

  402. We live a

  403. degraded

  404. lifestyle in

  405. the 21st

  406. century.

  407. Remember the

  408. prodigal son

  409. when he left

  410. home with his

  411. father's cash

  412. ended up

  413. eating pig

  414. fruit.

  415. And you

  416. can try

  417. and put a

  418. fitted carpet

  419. in a pig

  420. sty but it's

  421. still a pig

  422. sty.

  423. today our

  424. text reminds

  425. us that we

  426. are a society

  427. which is

  428. godless and

  429. reminds us of

  430. the kind of

  431. byproducts of

  432. that godlessness.

  433. One, the

  434. self is

  435. elevated.

  436. Two, sin

  437. is normalized.

  438. Some of you

  439. are sitting

  440. there thinking

  441. you know

  442. what the

  443. world I was

  444. born into

  445. is a very

  446. different world

  447. than the

  448. world I

  449. experience

  450. today.

  451. I'm not

  452. talking about

  453. the good

  454. things and

  455. there are

  456. plenty of

  457. good things.

  458. I'm talking

  459. about our

  460. degraded

  461. culture.

  462. In 1950,

  463. those of you

  464. who were

  465. around then

  466. will remember

  467. that there

  468. was a big

  469. course in

  470. what was the

  471. high court

  472. then, not the

  473. supreme court,

  474. regarding

  475. Lady Chattel

  476. is lover.

  477. Remember that

  478. book any of

  479. you?

  480. Don't put your

  481. hands up if

  482. you've read it.

  483. Because my

  484. gut feeling is

  485. on the basis

  486. of my experience

  487. in school is

  488. if you took

  489. that book and

  490. threw it in the

  491. air and you

  492. threw a hundred

  493. copies in the

  494. air, they'd all

  495. come down open

  496. at the same

  497. page.

  498. the

  499. attempt

  500. successful

  501. apparently

  502. of the

  503. gamekeeper to

  504. seduce Lady

  505. Chatterley.

  506. In terms of

  507. the kind of

  508. stakes of

  509. pornography

  510. that are

  511. available today,

  512. that book was

  513. pretty minimal.

  514. Compare it

  515. with today,

  516. what's allowed.

  517. television

  518. programs where

  519. people who've

  520. never clapped

  521. eyes on each

  522. other before

  523. are encouraged

  524. to get

  525. married.

  526. Dating

  527. programs where

  528. people assess

  529. the person

  530. they might

  531. date on the

  532. basis of

  533. seeing them

  534. naked.

  535. Won't bode

  536. well for me,

  537. I can promise

  538. you.

  539. And people

  540. will say,

  541. with

  542. complacency

  543. deep in

  544. their

  545. hearts,

  546. oh, it's

  547. always been

  548. the same.

  549. No, it

  550. hasn't.

  551. We didn't

  552. have the

  553. internet, we

  554. didn't have

  555. social media,

  556. we didn't

  557. have these

  558. things, which

  559. allow depraved

  560. minds free

  561. license.

  562. Whatever the

  563. good of social

  564. media, and I'm

  565. persuaded that

  566. there are some

  567. good things,

  568. keeping people in

  569. contact with

  570. each other, my

  571. goodness, there

  572. are an awful

  573. lot of bad

  574. things that go

  575. on.

  576. what happens,

  577. self is

  578. elevated, sin

  579. is normalized,

  580. and meaning

  581. is degraded.

  582. 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  583. chapter 3

  584. and verse

  585. 4.

  586. Sorry, I

  587. don't mean

  588. verse 4.

  589. It talks

  590. about

  591. people being

  592. far away

  593. from the

  594. truth.

  595. This is a

  596. slightly tricky

  597. passage, because

  598. at one level,

  599. Paul is talking

  600. about people in

  601. general, and

  602. then at another

  603. level, and this

  604. is a little

  605. worrying for

  606. church leaders,

  607. he's saying

  608. that part of

  609. the problem is

  610. church leaders

  611. who have

  612. depraved minds

  613. as well.

  614. Men, who he

  615. says, oppose

  616. the truth.

  617. If you're

  618. worried about

  619. Jenner's and

  620. Jambres, those

  621. two people

  622. mentioned there,

  623. they were

  624. sorcerers,

  625. Egyptian

  626. sorcerers, who

  627. tried to

  628. oppose

  629. Moses.

  630. What is

  631. God saying

  632. to us in

  633. all of

  634. this?

  635. Have

  636. nothing to

  637. do with

  638. these people.

  639. Now, there

  640. are some

  641. branches of

  642. Christian

  643. discipleship that

  644. have taken

  645. that very

  646. literally and

  647. decided they

  648. will shut

  649. themselves away

  650. from the

  651. world.

  652. You all have

  653. read about the

  654. Amish in

  655. North America,

  656. or the

  657. strict brethren

  658. here.

  659. I don't think

  660. that's what

  661. Paul meant.

  662. I think what

  663. Paul meant

  664. was have

  665. nothing to

  666. do with

  667. wrong-headed

  668. ideas.

  669. These ideas

  670. put about by

  671. depraved minds.

  672. people

  673. are

  674. and if

  675. we'd read

  676. on, we

  677. would read

  678. there what

  679. Paul's

  680. antidote to

  681. all this is

  682. for

  683. Christian

  684. disciples.

  685. Paul says

  686. to Timothy,

  687. get focused

  688. on the

  689. Bible.

  690. Preach it

  691. in season

  692. and out of

  693. season.

  694. And be

  695. very wary

  696. of false

  697. teachers.

  698. I think

  699. the Church

  700. of England

  701. nationally is

  702. in a mess

  703. at the

  704. moment,

  705. because there

  706. are fundamental

  707. differences

  708. between

  709. leaders as

  710. to what the

  711. Bible actually

  712. means when

  713. it says

  714. stuff.

  715. When a

  716. society becomes

  717. godless,

  718. terrible things

  719. happen.

  720. But listen,

  721. here's the

  722. kicker,

  723. which has

  724. particular

  725. relevance to

  726. church leaders,

  727. but also to

  728. all of you

  729. as well.

  730. Here it is,

  731. when a

  732. society becomes

  733. godless,

  734. God calls

  735. his church

  736. to account.

  737. You and

  738. me.

  739. That's the

  740. message of

  741. the prophets.

  742. Message of

  743. the prophets

  744. describes what's

  745. going on in

  746. the world and

  747. then calls the

  748. faithful to

  749. step it up.

  750. Leaders must

  751. not be false

  752. teachers, but

  753. must be

  754. faithful to

  755. that which is

  756. handed down

  757. to them.

  758. And yet.

  759. And so on

  760. this Advent

  761. Sunday, I

  762. want to

  763. encourage you

  764. to do three

  765. things.

  766. One, look

  767. up to the

  768. sovereign

  769. Lord.

  770. This is not

  771. a recipe for

  772. complacency, but

  773. actually we do

  774. need to remember

  775. that the

  776. sovereign Lord

  777. of the earth

  778. and the heavens

  779. and all that

  780. therein is,

  781. is in control

  782. even when we

  783. don't feel

  784. that.

  785. second, look

  786. down into

  787. your Bibles,

  788. read, mark,

  789. learn and

  790. inwardly digest

  791. its truth

  792. and seek to

  793. live as God

  794. would have you

  795. live.

  796. And thirdly,

  797. look around.

  798. Look around

  799. you.

  800. This is not

  801. just, you know,

  802. too much of

  803. church just

  804. resides within

  805. the four walls

  806. of our

  807. ancient

  808. buildings.

  809. Some of you

  810. get this, and

  811. I thank God

  812. for you, but

  813. we've got to

  814. get out into

  815. the world, a

  816. world which is

  817. suffering immensely

  818. at the moment,

  819. and show people

  820. what God is

  821. like by talking

  822. to them about

  823. Jesus Christ.

  824. Paul was

  825. writing to

  826. Timothy in

  827. Ephesus.

  828. And if you

  829. have been to

  830. Ephesus,

  831. it's a pile of

  832. rubble.

  833. I mean, it's an

  834. interesting pile of

  835. rubble, but it

  836. is a pile of

  837. rubble.

  838. In Revelation

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  839. chapter 2, we

  840. read there that

  841. the church had

  842. many things that

  843. the risen Christ

  844. could commend it

  845. for.

  846. Commend it for

  847. its doctrinal

  848. purity.

  849. authority.

  850. They were very

  851. clear on who

  852. was a heretic,

  853. very clear on

  854. who was out

  855. of the kingdom.

  856. And I

  857. didn't expect,

  858. don't expect,

  859. that they

  860. thought the

  861. risen Christ

  862. would then

  863. accuse them.

  864. He already

  865. said to

  866. them,

  867. all this is

  868. good, but

  869. you have

  870. lost your

  871. first love.

  872. friends, let

  873. me ask you,

  874. are there

  875. saints sitting

  876. in church this

  877. morning who've

  878. lost their

  879. first love?

  880. Isaiah

    Isaiah 64 chapter mention

  881. chapter 64

  882. and verse 6

  883. says that our

  884. spiritual experience

  885. is like the

  886. autumn leaves,

  887. it fades and

  888. withers.

  889. Maybe the

  890. Holy Spirit

  891. is whispering in

  892. your ear this

  893. morning and

  894. telling you,

  895. step it up,

  896. come back.

  897. There's a

  898. warning here for

  899. us, isn't

  900. there, that

  901. churches can be

  902. doctrinally pure

  903. but lacking in

  904. love.

  905. I think I've

  906. been to some

  907. churches like

  908. that.

  909. Churches that

  910. sit in

  911. judgment over

  912. this world,

  913. forgetting that

  914. God loves the

  915. world that he

  916. created and

  917. calls us to

  918. love it as

  919. well.

  920. it's Advent

  921. Sunday, a

  922. day to

  923. repent.

  924. I'm

  925. minded of

  926. Clive's talk

  927. when we came

  928. back from

  929. COVID where he

  930. talked about a

  931. reset, the

  932. church in

  933. reset.

  934. Maybe God is

  935. telling you

  936. today that

  937. Advent would be

  938. a great day for

  939. this to happen,

  940. to repent and

  941. return to the

  942. Lord.

  943. Our society

  944. needs Christians

  945. who will stand

  946. up, will speak

  947. up in prayer to

  948. God and in

  949. witness to this

  950. world.

  951. Luke 15

  952. tells us,

  953. there is joy in

  954. heaven when a

  955. sinner repents.

  956. Wouldn't it be

  957. great if a few of

  958. us could kick

  959. off a few parties

  960. in heaven today?

  961. God is

  962. going to be

  963. here to

  964. pray.

  965. I'm not here to

  966. tell you when

  967. Jesus might

  968. return, but I

  969. am here to tell

  970. you that we

  971. need to read the

  972. signs and we

  973. need to do

  974. something.

  975. In the name of

  976. our amazing God

  977. who loved us

  978. enough to send

  979. his son onto

  980. this planet that

  981. we might be set

  982. free, redeemed.

  983. In the name of

  984. that wonderful

  985. God, Father,

  986. Son and Holy

  987. Spirit.

  988. And the people

  989. who agreed said

  990. together.

  991. Amen.

  992. Amen.
