  1. we're not just physical beings.

  2. We have this thing called life in the Spirit.

  3. And that, says Paul, is the most important thing.

  4. To be in Christ, to be free in Christ,

  5. means that our life is essentially life in the Holy Spirit.

  6. Paul puts it,

  7. you, however, are not in the realm of the flesh,

  8. but are in the realm of the Spirit.

  9. It is the Holy Spirit that gives us freedom,

  10. that gives us identity.

  11. In Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  12. I'm told that there's more references to the Holy Spirit

  13. than in any other single chapter in the entire New Testament.

  14. And in these few verses alone,

  15. the Spirit is mentioned 16 times.

  16. It's clearly a preoccupation for Paul.

  17. So what does it look like then?

  18. What does it mean in real, actual, practical terms

  19. to be talking about living out that identity in Christ,

  20. life in the Spirit,

  21. and to be free therein?

  22. Well, there's some things going to come up on the screen.

  23. The first thing here is that

  24. life in the Spirit gives us

  25. a new possession.

  26. Now, the Holy Spirit obviously is not a commodity.

  27. It's not a thing we own.

  28. It's not just a resort.

  29. But when Paul says that the Holy Spirit is in us,

  30. it means that there is a real sense

  31. in which God's Spirit becomes something.

  32. We are his possession and he is ours.

  33. In verse 9 it says,

  34. God's Spirit lives in you.

  35. New possession.

  36. Last summer was the Queen's Jubilee

  37. and there were a lot of stories being put out there

  38. from people, anecdotes,

  39. people that had met the Queen.

  40. You may have heard this particular story,

  41. but it was my favourite one.

  42. It was told by one of her former security guards

  43. who was out walking in the estate,

  44. in the Balmoral estate years ago.

  45. And it was just him and the Queen

  46. and they came across a couple of American walkers

  47. who, it would seem, didn't recognise her.

  48. But they were very friendly

  49. and they struck up a conversation

  50. and they said,

  51. so do you live near here?

  52. She said, apparently no, I live in London,

  53. but I've got a little holiday home round the corner.

  54. I said, oh, so have you been coming here for long?

  55. She said, well yeah, since I was a little girl,

  56. so over 80 years now.

  57. And apparently,

  58. they then said,

  59. well if you've been coming here all this time,

  60. you must have met the Queen.

  61. And she was very fast,

  62. she said, oh I haven't,

  63. but he has lots of times.

  64. Pointing to the security guard

  65. who's recounting this story.

  66. So they turned to him

  67. and they said,

  68. so what's she like?

  69. And he said he worked with her for long enough

  70. to be able to get away with this.

  71. He said to them,

  72. well she can be quite cantankerous sometimes,

  73. but she's got a wonderful sense of humour.

  74. And they still didn't cotton on.

  75. They said,

  76. we could just do anything

  77. to have a photo taken

  78. with someone who's met the Queen.

  79. At which point,

  80. one of them passed their phone to the Queen.

  81. And said,

  82. can you take a photo of us with this guy?

  83. So she did,

  84. and they kept straight faces

  85. right the way through this.

  86. But before the conversation ended,

  87. they swapped places

  88. and the Queen insisted

  89. that they also take one

  90. with her in it.

  91. And then,

  92. just as they went,

  93. she said to her security guard,

  94. I would give anything

  95. to be a fly on the wall.

  96. When they get home,

  97. they're retelling this story,

  98. and they're showing these photos

  99. to their friends.

  100. Being in the presence of royalty

  101. and just not recognising it.

  102. You can see where this is going.

  103. When you become a Christian,

  104. you become in Christ.

  105. You have a new possession,

  106. as I say,

  107. not as a resource,

  108. not as a commodity,

  109. but the Holy Spirit of God,

  110. the one who raised Jesus from the dead.

  111. The Holy Spirit of the living God

  112. is the one who you meet with.

  113. And yet,

  114. and yet we overlook that significance.

  115. We don't recognise it.

  116. We don't take it on board.

  117. Perhaps it's a lifelong process

  118. of coming to terms with that reality,

  119. but that is the reality.

  120. We meet simply not with royalty.

  121. We meet with the living God.

  122. And we have the living God

  123. communing with us

  124. in our everyday lives.

  125. And we need to wake up

  126. and smell the coffee

  127. and recognise that reality.

  128. Because when we see

  129. that that is our possession,

  130. that the Holy Spirit of God

  131. is not simply around us

  132. and beside us,

  133. although he is all those things,

  134. but is actually within us,

  135. that's the game changer.

  136. And Paul says,

  137. everything else

  138. has got to be worked out from there.

  139. God's Spirit lives in you.

  140. You have this extraordinary,

  141. extraordinary possession

  142. that my guess is most of the time

  143. we simply don't take on board.

  144. We don't recognise.

  145. The second thing is

  146. that, yes,

  147. we have a new possession,

  148. but it gives us a new position.

  149. Paul says in this passage

  150. that we become children of God.

  151. Become adopted into God's family.

  152. That's what this identity is,

  153. to be in Christ.

  154. Christ.

  155. And you have a new freedom

  156. because when you understand

  157. your identity in those terms,

  158. that you not only just

  159. meet this God

  160. that we need to recognise,

  161. but actually we become

  162. God's children,

  163. it changes the way

  164. we see things,

  165. we see ourselves,

  166. we see our interactions,

  167. the way we see our identity.

  168. Several years ago,

  169. there was an experiment,

  170. a rather unusual one,

  171. that was carried out

  172. by a psychologist.

  173. They had ten people

  174. in this sample,

  175. in this experiment.

  176. And they said,

  177. they explained to these volunteers

  178. that it was a social experiment

  179. and with the help of,

  180. the help of make-up,

  181. they had some Hollywood

  182. sort of make-up artists

  183. as part of the experiment,

  184. they put the volunteers

  185. into ten cubicles

  186. and they said,

  187. what we're going to do

  188. is we're going to paint

  189. quite a noticeable scar

  190. on your faces.

  191. So there were about two hours

  192. going through this,

  193. putting the make-up on

  194. and so each of the volunteers

  195. was aware that this was

  196. serious business,

  197. this was going to look realistic

  198. and then they showed them

  199. what they looked like

  200. in the mirror

  201. and they said,

  202. what we're going to do

  203. is we're going to ask you

  204. to go out

  205. and just interact

  206. with people for several hours,

  207. go into as many shops,

  208. cafes, restaurants,

  209. whatever,

  210. talk to as many people

  211. and get on public transport

  212. and just interact

  213. and we just want you

  214. to then come back

  215. and we're going to interview you

  216. because we want to know

  217. how people interact with you

  218. when they see

  219. what you've got

  220. on your faces.

  221. We said,

  222. just before we send you out

  223. we just need to send you

  224. back into the cubicles

  225. and just do a little bit

  226. of finishing touches

  227. to the make-up.

  228. At which point

  229. what they didn't realise

  230. was that

  231. they actually removed

  232. the scars from their faces.

  233. So these volunteers

  234. go out into the public situation

  235. thinking that they've been made up

  236. when in fact

  237. they haven't at all.

  238. They look exactly the same

  239. as they always have done.

  240. Do you know

  241. when those ten people

  242. came back afterwards

  243. and were interviewed

  244. without exception

  245. they said that people

  246. treated them so strangely.

  247. People would either

  248. look the other way,

  249. would ignore them,

  250. people cut them short,

  251. they said it was just terrible.

  252. the worst few hours

  253. of their lives.

  254. You see,

  255. well that simple experiment

  256. serves to illustrate

  257. is the difference

  258. that self-image makes.

  259. When you have a picture

  260. in your mind's eye

  261. as to

  262. what you are

  263. it shapes

  264. the way

  265. that you perceive others

  266. and you interact

  267. with others.

  268. in Christ

  269. we have this new position

  270. and it's a position

  271. that defines

  272. or should define

  273. the way that we see

  274. ourselves

  275. and our relationships

  276. and the way that we interact

  277. with others.

  278. When we see things

  279. through that lens

  280. it changes everything.

  281. Our new position

  282. is that

  283. we are God's children

  284. in Christ.

  285. God's spirit

  286. lives in us.

  287. We have a new possession,

  288. we have a new position.

  289. The third thing

  290. is we have

  291. a new prospect.

  292. Usually

  293. when

  294. you inherit something

  295. when somebody else

  296. dies

  297. in

  298. in these verses

  299. from

  300. Paul

  301. Paul

  302. we are told

  303. that we inherit

  304. something

  305. when we die.

  306. We are heirs

  307. of God

  308. he says

  309. in verse 17

  310. co-heirs

  311. with Christ.

  312. In other words

  313. everything

  314. that we see

  315. in the risen Jesus

  316. will be ours.

  317. The kingdom

  318. of God

  319. in all its fullness

  320. which is so much

  321. bigger

  322. and greater

  323. than anything

  324. else

  325. that this world

  326. has to offer

  327. will be ours.

  328. And whilst

  329. it will only

  330. fully be ours

  331. in eternity

  332. we get a glimpse

  333. now.

  334. Because that

  335. identity

  336. in Christ

  337. starts now.

  338. The Holy Spirit

  339. is in us

  340. now.

  341. We are God's

  342. children

  343. now

  344. and therefore

  345. that prospect

  346. of the future

  347. begins now.

  348. We're not there yet

  349. and we won't

  350. be there

  351. until we get

  352. there.

  353. But we have

  354. that new

  355. prospect.

  356. We are

  357. heirs

  358. of God's

  359. kingdom.

  360. And so

  361. the fourth

  362. the last one

  363. that I want

  364. to suggest

  365. is that

  366. what this

  367. gives us

  368. is a radically

  369. new pursuit.

  370. this is what

  371. the journey

  372. is all about.

  373. Now it may

  374. well be that

  375. we listen to

  376. some of these

  377. things and we

  378. think this

  379. sounds great

  380. I just long

  381. wish I had

  382. this sense of

  383. the Holy Spirit

  384. being in my life

  385. as his possession.

  386. I wish I had

  387. that sense of

  388. identity

  389. that sense of

  390. position

  391. that sense of

  392. a child of God

  393. I wish I really

  394. kind of took

  395. that on board.

  396. That sense of

  397. the future

  398. promise

  399. I'd love all that

  400. I'd love to think

  401. all that yet I

  402. struggle so much

  403. I get it wrong

  404. in my life

  405. I don't sort of

  406. live that out

  407. I make mistakes

  408. it's such a

  409. struggle for me

  410. to kind of

  411. come to terms

  412. with all this.

  413. If you're feeling

  414. any of that

  415. then be reassured

  416. this is why

  417. Paul wrote

  418. these words

  419. because it's

  420. a struggle.

  421. That's why

  422. these words

  423. are here for us

  424. in Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  425. to say that

  426. life is a struggle

  427. there is this

  428. thing called

  429. the flesh

  430. and there's

  431. everything that

  432. distracts us

  433. and pulls us

  434. in the direction

  435. of all the stuff

  436. that is

  437. effected

  438. eventually

  439. will come

  440. to nothing

  441. everything that

  442. will die out

  443. there's all of

  444. those things

  445. going on

  446. but

  447. but be

  448. reassured

  449. it's a

  450. lifelong

  451. pursuit

  452. but we are

  453. called

  454. to make

  455. this our

  456. focus

  457. to cast

  458. our eyes

  459. onto Jesus

  460. to make

  461. him the

  462. focus

  463. and him

  464. the focus

  465. alone

  466. and sometimes

  467. we'll get

  468. that right

  469. and sometimes

  470. we'll get

  471. that wrong

  472. but he's

  473. with us

  474. he's there

  475. for us

  476. he's that

  477. new possession

  478. that's in us

  479. he's that one

  480. that gives us

  481. that radically

  482. new position

  483. he holds out

  484. that prospect

  485. before us

  486. and so we have

  487. this new

  488. lifelong pursuit

  489. and it's never

  490. too late

  491. to start it

  492. and it's never

  493. too late

  494. to restart it

  495. apparently

  496. I'd never come

  497. across this

  498. before

  499. but apparently

  500. there is a

  501. proverb that

  502. comes from

  503. France originally

  504. that says

  505. the best

  506. the best

  507. starter

  508. for any

  509. meal

  510. is hunger

  511. if talking

  512. about these

  513. things

  514. wets your

  515. appetite

  516. be encouraged

  517. because that's

  518. where he

  519. meets us

  520. and as we

  521. come to pray

  522. now

  523. if perhaps

  524. that sense

  525. of hunger

  526. after God's

  527. Holy Spirit

  528. is something

  529. that resonates

  530. with you

  531. then that's

  532. fantastic

  533. but don't

  534. beat yourself

  535. up over it

  536. see it as a

  537. positive

  538. and take

  539. that hunger

  540. for his

  541. Holy Spirit

  542. to that sense

  543. of renewed

  544. identity

  545. in him

  546. bring it

  547. to him

  548. and invite

  549. his Holy Spirit

  550. in

  551. let's pray

  552. together now

  553. let's take a few

  554. moments just to

  555. be still

  556. as we

  557. reflect on

  558. these things

  559. and as we

  560. bring our

  561. lives before

  562. him

  563. knowing that

  564. we

  565. we have

  566. a life

  567. our

  568. flesh

  569. our lives

  570. in the

  571. flesh

  572. our lives

  573. here and

  574. now

  575. are mortal

  576. lives

  577. but knowing

  578. that that is

  579. not the

  580. dominant

  581. theme

  582. Lord

  583. we are

  584. human beings

  585. and we

  586. come to you

  587. as we are

  588. because we

  589. can come no

  590. other way

  591. and we

  592. confess to

  593. you all

  594. about us

  595. that is

  596. broken

  597. that is

  598. distorted

  599. that is

  600. messed up

  601. we bring

  602. before you

  603. our past

  604. and indeed

  605. our present

  606. and things

  607. that perhaps

  608. bring us

  609. a sense

  610. of shame

  611. but Lord

  612. thank you

  613. that your

  614. view of us

  615. is so much

  616. more positive

  617. than our

  618. view of us

  619. so Lord

  620. as we say

  621. to you

  622. that we

  623. are sorry

  624. and we

  625. confess

  626. our wrongdoing

  627. to you

  628. thank you

  629. that we

  630. may know

  631. that our

  632. life

  633. our identity

  634. is life

  635. in the

  636. spirit

  637. Holy Spirit

  638. would you

  639. breathe

  640. would you

  641. pour

  642. into our

  643. hearts

  644. that renewed

  645. sense

  646. of freedom

  647. that comes

  648. only from

  649. you

  650. Lord

  651. would you

  652. shape in

  653. us

  654. that new

  655. sense

  656. of identity

  657. that position

  658. that we

  659. are your

  660. children

  661. Lord

  662. would you

  663. focus us

  664. in on

  665. that hope

  666. that promise

  667. that prospect

  668. that is

  669. ours for

  670. all eternity

  671. and Lord

  672. would you

  673. in your

  674. Holy Spirit

  675. enable us

  676. to pursue

  677. these things

  678. now and

  679. in our

  680. daily lives

  681. so Lord

  682. Holy Spirit

  683. pour into

  684. us now

  685. let's just

  686. wait upon

  687. God as

  688. we

  689. wait upon

  690. his Holy

  691. Spirit

  692. Holy Spirit

  693. would you

  694. pour out

  695. yourself

  696. upon us
