  1. Good morning, everyone. As we sit, let's bow our heads and pray together.

  2. Our gracious Father, we hear Paul's exaltation to stand firm in the Lord.

  3. And Father, as we look at the world around us, we begin to see that your people really do need to step up and to stand firm.

  4. So Father, we pray this morning that you would inspire us by your Holy Spirit to do just that.

  5. To step up and to stand firm in Jesus.

  6. In whom our citizenship depends.

  7. And we pray these things in Christ's name. Amen.

  8. Amen.

  9. So I want to preach to you on a verse from our reading this morning.

  10. Paul says this in Philippians 3 verse 20.

    Philippians 3:20

  11. Our citizenship is in heaven.

  12. And we eagerly await a saviour from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.

  13. So a couple of months ago or thereabouts, I was really looking forward to a trip up to my hometown in Cheshire.

  14. To see my friends from the days when I wasn't a Christian.

  15. And just to hang out with them for a few days.

  16. And so I had booked early.

  17. And because I'm old and creaky, I get a senior's rail card.

  18. Which means I can get a third discount.

  19. And that's about the only thing I like about getting old.

  20. So I'm at the station, Yatom.

  21. Get on a train to Temple Meads.

  22. Where according to my ticket, I have to change trains and get to Newport in Wales.

  23. And then get a train that will take me up to Chester.

  24. And then from Chester to Stockport.

  25. And then from Stockport to Knutsford.

  26. By the time I got to Newport, I was still eager.

  27. Eager to get there and hang out.

  28. Unfortunately, when I got to Newport, there was no mention of my train on the digital sign.

  29. So I went up to a nice porter and said to him,

  30. did he have any idea what had happened to the 1021 to Chester?

  31. I don't know, he said.

  32. But it is a...

  33. I can't remember what they call the Welsh Railway Company.

  34. But he said it's a Welsh train.

  35. And he said, anything could happen.

  36. And I'm like, well, that's encouraging.

  37. And then he came and found me about three minutes later.

  38. And he said, I'm afraid your train's cancelled.

  39. Oh, and by the way, you need to know,

  40. you've told me you booked a first class fare.

  41. I said, yeah.

  42. He said, there is no first class service on that train anyway.

  43. By this time, my nose was feeling strangely

  44. as though it might start to bleed.

  45. So I got on a train, went back to Bristol Parkway,

  46. got on a train to Birmingham,

  47. had 35 seconds to cross the station to get on a train to Stockport.

  48. By that time, I was hoping the defibrillator was in useful distance.

  49. In the end, I got there, and during that day,

  50. I have made eight changes on various railways.

  51. As it happens, I had a great time.

  52. But what I do want to say is the eagerness that I had as I started my journey

  53. had just about drained out through my shoes by the time I got there.

  54. We're waiting eagerly, eagerly, said Paul,

  55. for the Lord Jesus Christ to return.

  56. Let me ask you a question.

  57. Is that your experience?

  58. I mean, this was just, in the end, can you believe this?

  59. I was just an hour late.

  60. Some of us want to say to the Lord, come on, Lord,

  61. it's been 2,000 years now since you told us you were coming back,

  62. and we're still hanging on.

  63. Is it fair to say that our eagerness can be tempered

  64. once whatever it is we're seeking to achieve gets very drawn out?

  65. I think that's a reasonable thesis.

  66. So I want to talk to you today about something that Russell made very clear

  67. a few weeks ago for those of you who are here,

  68. and that is our primary identity as Christians is in Christ.

  69. Paul puts it a slightly different way here.

  70. He says our identity is as citizens of heaven.

  71. Today, I think you could say that our culture is very interested in,

  72. maybe even obsessed by identity.

  73. Everything now becomes an identity issue.

  74. It was interesting to me that in the feedback from the first question,

  75. as far as I know, only one person said that the primary factor

  76. that determines their identity, who they are,

  77. only one person in church today said,

  78. my identity is in Jesus.

  79. Not telling you off when I say that.

  80. Mostly.

  81. So everything becomes an identity issue.

  82. Recently, there was an article in the news

  83. about something that is really terrible in our culture,

  84. and that is we are not recruiting enough women to be engineers.

  85. This obviously was a result of dreadful oppression

  86. and abysmal behavior,

  87. but not many women are showing up to be engineers.

  88. It didn't occur to the author of this article.

  89. There may be some women who don't choose to be engineers,

  90. but it became an issue about the identity of women.

  91. That example could be reproduced thousands of times,

  92. not just about gender issues, race issues, whatever.

  93. And I want to try and explain to you very briefly today

  94. two reasons why it is that identity has become such a critical issue.

  95. And part of the reason it has become a critical issue,

  96. almost an obsession is partly due to the fact

  97. that it has been given a free ride on social media.

  98. So here are two reasons why we're obsessed with identity today.

  99. One is called, a philosophical concept called determinism.

  100. That is, everything you are is buried in your past,

  101. and they're all external factors.

  102. So they could be disadvantages

  103. that are perceived to be disadvantages in today's culture.

  104. Could be to do that you had awful parenting when you were a child.

  105. Could be to do with your genetics.

  106. It could be to do with the fact that you came from a household

  107. which had no educational aspiration and no money.

  108. Could be to do with any of these things.

  109. But the big deal is, who you are is not your fault.

  110. All to do with external factors that happened to you in the past.

  111. And of course, of course there is truth in that.

  112. Nobody's pretending that part of us all in church this morning

  113. isn't a product of stuff that happened to us in the past.

  114. We'll come back to that.

  115. The second thing I want to try to explain to you

  116. is a word that I hope you will forget

  117. the moment you leave church this morning.

  118. And the word is intersectionality.

  119. Okay?

  120. This is kind of taking determinism

  121. into a kind of more extreme form.

  122. A lady called Kimberley Crenshaw, 1985,

  123. developed this theory.

  124. And the theory is this.

  125. That certain people suffer from serious disadvantages in our culture.

  126. What intersectionality does is

  127. it kind of creates a sort of grid, a matrix,

  128. whereby all those factors are factored in.

  129. So, I'm not trying to parody any particular kind of person here,

  130. but if you are black,

  131. if you are a person of colour,

  132. if you are a woman,

  133. if you are a white heterosexual male,

  134. if you are a lesbian,

  135. if you are gay,

  136. all that,

  137. we're told,

  138. creates disadvantage in your life.

  139. And what intersectionality does is

  140. it kind of gives you a score

  141. on how disadvantaged you are.

  142. And of course,

  143. there's an element of truth in all that.

  144. But there are some things in life

  145. that if you blowtorch them so much,

  146. if you focus on them so much

  147. and get them out of kilter,

  148. then they become very difficult,

  149. I think,

  150. for societies to process

  151. and to live with healthily.

  152. Let me give you an example

  153. of another human characteristic,

  154. which broadly we would agree is good,

  155. but if taken to an extreme,

  156. can become extremely not good.

  157. Loyalty.

  158. Loyalty is really important.

  159. It's important.

  160. It's important in organizations.

  161. It's important in marriages.

  162. It's important in all kinds of areas.

  163. But there comes a point

  164. where loyalty becomes a cop-out.

  165. Why do I say that?

  166. Because we still give people

  167. who whistleblow,

  168. as we say in organizations,

  169. who break ranks with loyalty

  170. to try and tell the truth

  171. about what's going wrong

  172. in the organization.

  173. If we didn't have people like that,

  174. people would continue

  175. to get away with appalling behavior

  176. in the name of loyalty.

  177. So these two things,

  178. intersectionality and determinism,

  179. basically have this one

  180. profound disadvantage,

  181. and that is,

  182. together,

  183. they create a kind of factory

  184. for victims.

  185. People who can say,

  186. this is not my fault.

  187. I don't have to take responsibility

  188. because this wasn't me.

  189. There was a church up in Leeds

  190. where the guy was trying

  191. to attract young families,

  192. so he started a toddler group.

  193. It was a great idea.

  194. And then he kind of thought,

  195. how can I move this

  196. from being a great toddler group

  197. to being a place

  198. where people might find

  199. Jesus Christ?

  200. So he talked to the women,

  201. mostly women then,

  202. who brought their kids

  203. to the toddler group.

  204. He said to them,

  205. what is your greatest anxiety

  206. about bringing up children?

  207. Oh, they said,

  208. as one,

  209. this is simple,

  210. it's potty training.

  211. Guy scratched his head,

  212. he said,

  213. seriously?

  214. You know,

  215. you're not worried about famine?

  216. No?

  217. Potty training.

  218. He discovered

  219. the reason for this was

  220. that some kind of

  221. hacked doctor

  222. had written in the local

  223. newspaper,

  224. basically an article

  225. which said,

  226. if you get potty training

  227. wrong with your children,

  228. you are breeding

  229. the next generation

  230. of serial killers.

  231. Mark my words.

  232. So he did a course.

  233. And the course was run

  234. by a responsible GP

  235. who came in

  236. and did five sessions

  237. on healthy potty training.

  238. Must have been

  239. a real blast,

  240. mustn't it?

  241. The last one,

  242. the vicar did.

  243. He studiously avoided

  244. potty training

  245. and talked to them

  246. about the need

  247. for them to recognize

  248. the spiritual seed

  249. that God had put

  250. into every child

  251. which needed

  252. to be nurtured.

  253. The result was

  254. a great playgroup

  255. became into

  256. a great recruitment group

  257. for Jesus Christ.

  258. Someone say amen.

  259. So those two things

  260. mean that

  261. we get very focused

  262. on identity

  263. in such a way

  264. that we persuade

  265. ourselves

  266. that actually

  267. nothing much

  268. is our fault.

  269. And to a point,

  270. let me say,

  271. I'm not taking

  272. extreme view of this.

  273. To a point,

  274. there is something

  275. in both those

  276. ways of thinking.

  277. But if pushed

  278. too far,

  279. they become

  280. very difficult,

  281. even nonsensical

  282. in our society.

  283. So Paul,

  284. in Philippians

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  285. chapter 3,

  286. has just been

  287. talking about

  288. how he considers

  289. all that went

  290. before as,

  291. this is his words,

  292. not mine,

  293. as rubbish,

  294. that he may gain

  295. Christ and be found

  296. in him,

  297. not having a righteousness

  298. of his own

  299. that comes through

  300. the law,

  301. but that which is

  302. through faith.

  303. At the beginning

  304. of our reading,

  305. Paul said this,

  306. not that I have

  307. already obtained

  308. all this.

  309. See,

  310. those of you who

  311. know Jesus Christ

  312. in church today,

  313. would you say

  314. that you have

  315. obtained

  316. all the blessing

  317. that God wants

  318. for you?

  319. And the obvious

  320. answer to that

  321. is no.

  322. Why?

  323. Because you've

  324. not found

  325. your way

  326. into heaven yet.

  327. The blessings

  328. to come

  329. are very real,

  330. but they are

  331. in the future.

  332. We have not

  333. yet obtained

  334. them.

  335. He said,

  336. neither have I

  337. been made perfect.

  338. Listen,

  339. hands up.

  340. If you think

  341. you're perfect.

  342. Hands up.

  343. Of course

  344. not.

  345. Most of us

  346. still have

  347. glaring things

  348. in our lives

  349. that we know

  350. are not right

  351. and the people

  352. we live with,

  353. if we're blessed

  354. to live with

  355. somebody,

  356. know about them

  357. only too well.

  358. But,

  359. says Paul,

  360. despite the fact

  361. that I'm not

  362. where I will be

  363. one day,

  364. despite the fact

  365. that I'm not

  366. perfect,

  367. he says,

  368. I press on.

  369. You repeat

  370. that after me,

  371. just say,

  372. I press on.

  373. See,

  374. the idea of that

  375. is,

  376. we will have

  377. disappointments

  378. in our walk

  379. with Christ,

  380. but as Paul says,

  381. I have them,

  382. but look,

  383. I'm going to

  384. press on

  385. with Jesus.

  386. And then he

  387. tells us

  388. that he has

  389. a strategy

  390. for pressing

  391. on.

  392. First of all,

  393. he says,

  394. forgetting

  395. what is

  396. behind.

  397. My goodness,

  398. that is so

  399. challenging,

  400. isn't it,

  401. for those of us

  402. who are in a

  403. more determinist

  404. mindset.

  405. Some of you

  406. have had

  407. horrific things

  408. happen to you

  409. in your past.

  410. Some of you

  411. have had those

  412. things and have

  413. managed to kind

  414. of rise above

  415. them and get

  416. past them,

  417. but some of you

  418. haven't.

  419. And maybe today,

  420. this is the day

  421. that Jesus speaks

  422. into your ear

  423. and says,

  424. look,

  425. do as I ask.

  426. Let go

  427. of what is

  428. in the past.

  429. In 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5:17

  430. 5,

  431. verse 17,

  432. Paul tells us

  433. we're new

  434. creations.

  435. What Paul

  436. meant about

  437. that in that

  438. context was

  439. simply this.

  440. I have

  441. become a new

  442. creation and

  443. the past

  444. has become

  445. wiped out.

  446. The problem

  447. is,

  448. we can know

  449. we're forgiven,

  450. we can know

  451. that there is

  452. a possibility

  453. that we can

  454. leave the past

  455. behind,

  456. but unfortunately

  457. the devil uses

  458. that stuff to

  459. trip us up.

  460. in Isaiah

    Isaiah 43:18

  461. chapter 43,

  462. verses 18

  463. and 19,

  464. some of my

  465. favorite verses

  466. in the Old

  467. Testament.

  468. Verse 43,

  469. sorry,

  470. chapter 43,

  471. verses 18

  472. and 19.

  473. forget the

  474. former things,

  475. says the

  476. Lord.

  477. Do not dwell

  478. on the past.

  479. See,

  480. I'm doing a

  481. new thing.

  482. Now it

  483. springs up.

  484. Do you

  485. perceive it?

  486. Do you not

  487. perceive all?

  488. I am making

  489. a way in the

  490. desert and

  491. streams in the

  492. wasteland.

  493. See,

  494. for those of you

  495. who feel

  496. that your lives

  497. are a bit like

  498. a desert,

  499. there is hope

  500. because God

  501. wants to do

  502. a new thing.

  503. But to do

  504. that new thing,

  505. some of you

  506. are going to

  507. have to let

  508. go of stuff

  509. from the past.

  510. And here's

  511. the tricky

  512. thing.

  513. See,

  514. some of us

  515. are so

  516. messed up

  517. by our past

  518. that it

  519. identifies us.

  520. I mean,

  521. it might well

  522. have been,

  523. I wouldn't

  524. expect any of you

  525. to say this

  526. in a kind

  527. of public

  528. forum like

  529. that.

  530. But the

  531. bottom line

  532. is,

  533. it would be

  534. very difficult,

  535. not impossible,

  536. but very

  537. difficult,

  538. if you were

  539. physically or

  540. sexually abused

  541. at some stage

  542. in your past.

  543. It would be

  544. very difficult

  545. to let go

  546. of that.

  547. I appreciate

  548. that.

  549. But I want

  550. to say it's

  551. impossible because

  552. God wants to

  553. do a new

  554. thing in your

  555. life.

  556. Friends,

  557. are you

  558. pressing on?

  559. Or have you

  560. just become

  561. stuck in

  562. your spiritual

  563. life?

  564. And the

  565. problem is,

  566. there's a part

  567. of our culture,

  568. what I call

  569. therapy culture,

  570. that encourages

  571. us to dwell

  572. in our past.

  573. It's been around

  574. for a very long

  575. time.

  576. Therapy culture

  577. didn't just

  578. begin in the

  579. 20th century.

  580. It began

  581. with Job.

  582. Remember Job

  583. who lost

  584. everything,

  585. could have

  586. spent the rest

  587. of his life

  588. dwelling in

  589. what happened

  590. to him.

  591. And the

  592. only advice

  593. his friends

  594. could give

  595. him were,

  596. look into

  597. your past,

  598. Job.

  599. There must

  600. be something

  601. that you've

  602. done wrong.

  603. And Job

  604. could find

  605. nothing,

  606. and the

  607. Bible declares

  608. him as

  609. righteous.

  610. And this

  611. can become

  612. kind of

  613. pan-generational.

  614. people.

  615. You know,

  616. the way I

  617. am is not

  618. my fault,

  619. it's my

  620. parents,

  621. it's my

  622. grandparents.

  623. Even people

  624. now, you

  625. know, have

  626. these DNA

  627. tests done

  628. to tell

  629. what kind

  630. of racial

  631. background

  632. they have.

  633. My sister

  634. told me,

  635. I am 3%

  636. Anglo-Saxon.

  637. And he

  638. mentioned

  639. the next

  640. time,

  641. next time,

  642. if I get

  643. caught speeding

  644. and wind down

  645. the window

  646. and a policeman

  647. says,

  648. you were

  649. speeding them,

  650. do you

  651. recognize that?

  652. And I

  653. say,

  654. well, give

  655. me a

  656. break.

  657. I'm 3%

  658. Anglo-Saxon.

  659. You think

  660. that would

  661. work?

  662. I don't

  663. think so.

  664. Not my

  665. fault.

  666. And Ezekiel

  667. tells us

  668. that it's

  669. the soul

  670. that sins

  671. that will

  672. surely die.

  673. Not my

  674. relatives,

  675. but the

  676. soul that

  677. sins.

  678. Forgetting

  679. what is

  680. behind.

  681. Second

  682. part of

  683. Paul's

  684. strategy

  685. is

  686. verse 15

  687. where he

  688. gives us

  689. the analogy

  690. of a

  691. running race.

  692. It tells

  693. us that

  694. we've got to

  695. keep our

  696. eyes on the

  697. prize,

  698. if I can

  699. summarize it

  700. like that.

  701. Here's what

  702. he says.

  703. Can't find

  704. it.

  705. Can't find it.

  706. Can't find it.

  707. Can't find it.

  708. Can't find it.

  709. Can't find it.

  710. Can't find it.

  711. For

  712. getting

  713. what's

  714. behind and

  715. straining

  716. towards

  717. the

  718. reason,

  719. I press

  720. on towards

  721. the goal

  722. to win

  723. the prize

  724. for which

  725. God has

  726. called me

  727. heavenwards

  728. in Christ

  729. Jesus.

  730. See,

  731. if there's

  732. part of

  733. our

  734. culture,

  735. therapy

  736. culture,

  737. that asks

  738. us to

  739. dwell in

  740. the past,

  741. the kind

  742. of current

  743. culture

  744. of well-being,

  745. of mindfulness,

  746. tells us to

  747. live in the

  748. moment.

  749. I mean,

  750. as far as I

  751. can best tell,

  752. I don't have

  753. much choice

  754. about that.

  755. You know,

  756. the moment is,

  757. I'm living in

  758. the moment

  759. right now.

  760. Any minute now,

  761. my knees could

  762. buckle.

  763. But I'm living in

  764. the moment.

  765. Stop yawning at

  766. the back.

  767. The analogy of a

  768. running race.

  769. Listen,

  770. most people who

  771. are competitive

  772. don't enter

  773. a race

  774. with the idea

  775. that the most

  776. exciting thing

  777. about entering

  778. the race is,

  779. I'm going to

  780. have to train.

  781. Now,

  782. most people

  783. enter the race

  784. because they

  785. think with the

  786. right schedule,

  787. training schedule,

  788. they might have

  789. a possibility

  790. of actually

  791. winning.

  792. I don't know

  793. how that happens.

  794. You know,

  795. we used to have

  796. to do cross

  797. country in my

  798. school.

  799. I remember

  800. you know,

  801. I normally

  802. come in about

  803. 33rd when we

  804. had competitive

  805. running races.

  806. And one day,

  807. I can't remember

  808. I'd been training

  809. with any more

  810. diligence.

  811. In fact,

  812. I don't think

  813. I'd been training

  814. at all.

  815. And suddenly,

  816. it all came

  817. together.

  818. And I won

  819. the race.

  820. Couldn't believe

  821. it.

  822. Nor could our

  823. games master.

  824. Here's the thing.

  825. We're supposed

  826. to keep our

  827. eyes on the

  828. prize.

  829. Don't forget

  830. that you have

  831. a future

  832. in Jesus

  833. Christ.

  834. And it's

  835. based on

  836. the promises

  837. of God

  838. and also

  839. what Paul

  840. mentions here

  841. in verse

  842. 20.

  843. Our

  844. citizenship

  845. is in

  846. heaven.

  847. And we

  848. eagerly

  849. await a

  850. saviour from

  851. there,

  852. the Lord

  853. Jesus Christ,

  854. who by the

  855. power that

  856. enables him

  857. to bring

  858. everything under

  859. control,

  860. will transform

  861. our lowly

  862. bodies,

  863. so that they

  864. will be like

  865. his glorious

  866. body.

  867. Paul,

  868. before that,

  869. and interestingly,

  870. I would always

  871. think,

  872. you know this

  873. business,

  874. when we get,

  875. you know,

  876. some of you are

  877. in age where

  878. you kind of

  879. walk through

  880. town,

  881. and you're like,

  882. oh my goodness,

  883. you know,

  884. what are these

  885. people doing?

  886. Why do they

  887. behave like that?

  888. You know,

  889. why do people

  890. throw litter?

  891. Why do people

  892. smoke cigarettes?

  893. Why do people

  894. do all this

  895. stuff?

  896. In other words,

  897. you become

  898. just a little

  899. bit judgmental.

  900. And

  901. interestingly,

  902. my perception

  903. of St. Paul

  904. is that he

  905. might have the

  906. kind of character

  907. that might

  908. become a little

  909. judgmental.

  910. But when he

  911. talks about

  912. the people

  913. who are not

  914. Christian,

  915. who have not

  916. accepted citizenship

  917. in heaven,

  918. he talks about

  919. them,

  920. he says,

  921. with tears.

  922. And then he

  923. says,

  924. many live as

  925. the enemies

  926. of Christ.

  927. Sorry,

  928. enemies of the

  929. cross.

  930. What does

  931. that mean?

  932. I mean,

  933. most of the

  934. people who

  935. walk around

  936. Clevedon,

  937. who don't

  938. know Christ

  939. stand,

  940. don't show

  941. any interest

  942. in knowing

  943. Christ.

  944. They probably

  945. never think

  946. about the

  947. cross.

  948. Probably

  949. even know

  950. about it,

  951. probably never

  952. heard about

  953. it.

  954. You know,

  955. in Tokyo,

  956. I mean,

  957. I know Tokyo

  958. is a long

  959. way away,

  960. but I read

  961. in an article

  962. that in a

  963. shop window

  964. in Tokyo,

  965. there was a

  966. figure of

  967. Father Christmas

  968. on a cross.

  969. How confused

  970. is that?

  971. see,

  972. one being

  973. the enemies

  974. of Christ,

  975. the cross,

  976. means that

  977. they have

  978. no interest

  979. in the

  980. currency of

  981. seeking the

  982. best kind

  983. of forgiveness

  984. that can be

  985. achieved on

  986. planet Earth,

  987. and that is

  988. the forgiveness

  989. of God

  990. through the

  991. shedding of

  992. Christ's blood

  993. on the cross

  994. of Calvary.

  995. Enemies of

  996. the cross

  997. show no

  998. interest in

  999. wanting to

  1000. be healed.

  1001. Paul goes

  1002. on,

  1003. then destiny

  1004. is destruction.

  1005. Has it ever

  1006. occurred to you

  1007. when you look

  1008. at our world

  1009. and its current

  1010. state,

  1011. that there seems

  1012. to be a kind

  1013. of deep

  1014. self-destructive

  1015. facet

  1016. to the way

  1017. we're behaving?

  1018. I mean,

  1019. you could look

  1020. at that in a

  1021. number of

  1022. areas,

  1023. in political

  1024. life,

  1025. in moral

  1026. life,

  1027. you could look

  1028. at it in terms

  1029. of the environment,

  1030. you could look

  1031. at it in lots

  1032. and lots

  1033. of different

  1034. terms,

  1035. but listen,

  1036. Paul nails

  1037. it.

  1038. They are into

  1039. self-destruction.

  1040. Third thing

  1041. is,

  1042. he says

  1043. they're hedonists,

  1044. all they're

  1045. interested in

  1046. is pleasure.

  1047. That's what it

  1048. means when he

  1049. says their God

  1050. is their belly

  1051. or their stomach

  1052. and their glory

  1053. is in their

  1054. shame.

  1055. Has it ever

  1056. occurred to you

  1057. when you hear

  1058. celebrities or

  1059. whatever,

  1060. when they

  1061. are kind

  1062. of making

  1063. themselves

  1064. popular

  1065. off the

  1066. back of

  1067. the most

  1068. despicable

  1069. behavior?

  1070. Glorying in

  1071. their shame,

  1072. says Paul.

  1073. But no,

  1074. he says,

  1075. we are

  1076. citizens in

  1077. heaven.

  1078. Citizenship

  1079. implies a

  1080. privilege.

  1081. You're a

  1082. citizen of

  1083. the United

  1084. Kingdom.

  1085. There are

  1086. certain things

  1087. that you are

  1088. allowed to do

  1089. that if you

  1090. are not a

  1091. citizen,

  1092. you cannot

  1093. do.

  1094. You have a

  1095. right of

  1096. entry into

  1097. this country.

  1098. You're allowed

  1099. to live here.

  1100. I'm going to

  1101. say you're

  1102. allowed to

  1103. pay taxes,

  1104. but you

  1105. might not

  1106. be too

  1107. keen on

  1108. that.

  1109. Citizenship

  1110. in heaven

  1111. also implies

  1112. privilege.

  1113. If you are

  1114. in Christ,

  1115. you have a

  1116. right of

  1117. entry into

  1118. heaven.

  1119. You're not

  1120. going to get

  1121. a passport,

  1122. but you

  1123. will get a

  1124. free pass

  1125. into heaven

  1126. if you

  1127. are in

  1128. Christ.

  1129. Citizenship

  1130. in heaven

  1131. needs to

  1132. be lived

  1133. now in

  1134. the light

  1135. of what

  1136. will be.

  1137. That means

  1138. we need to

  1139. start thinking

  1140. differently,

  1141. friends.

  1142. In that

  1143. Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  1144. chapter 5,

  1145. you remember

  1146. on the

  1147. Sermon on

  1148. the Mount,

  1149. Jesus

  1150. talks to

  1151. us about

  1152. something that

  1153. have been

  1154. called the

  1155. Beatitudes.

  1156. These are

  1157. what you

  1158. might call

  1159. the values

  1160. what it

  1161. means to

  1162. be a

  1163. citizen of

  1164. heaven,

  1165. to be in

  1166. the kingdom

  1167. of God.

  1168. And if

  1169. you read

  1170. them,

  1171. I'm not

  1172. going to

  1173. read them

  1174. all to

  1175. you now

  1176. because you're

  1177. looking like

  1178. you need

  1179. lunch,

  1180. but if you

  1181. read them

  1182. all,

  1183. these are

  1184. the complete

  1185. antithesis

  1186. of the way

  1187. the world

  1188. lives.

  1189. Blessed are

  1190. the poor

  1191. in spirit.

  1192. Who thinks

  1193. that?

  1194. blessed are

  1195. those who

  1196. mourn.

  1197. Who thinks

  1198. that?

  1199. Blessed are

  1200. the meek.

  1201. Does anybody

  1202. down in the

  1203. city of

  1204. London believe

  1205. that?

  1206. Blessed are

  1207. those who

  1208. hunger and

  1209. thirst for

  1210. righteousness.

  1211. None of

  1212. these things

  1213. play a part

  1214. in 21st

  1215. century

  1216. Western

  1217. culture.

  1218. Friends,

  1219. we need to

  1220. think a little

  1221. differently.

  1222. And

  1223. meditating on

  1224. those

  1225. Beatitudes

  1226. might be

  1227. something you

  1228. might like to

  1229. think about.

  1230. And we

  1231. need to

  1232. behave

  1233. differently.

  1234. Do you

  1235. remember Jesus

  1236. talked about

  1237. the need

  1238. for us

  1239. to be

  1240. lost

  1241. in order

  1242. to be

  1243. re-found

  1244. by him?

  1245. Even

  1246. Gandhi,

  1247. who actually

  1248. pinched quite

  1249. a lot of

  1250. his best

  1251. stuff from

  1252. Jesus,

  1253. Gandhi said

  1254. this,

  1255. the best

  1256. way to

  1257. find yourself

  1258. is to

  1259. lose

  1260. yourself

  1261. in the

  1262. service of

  1263. others.

  1264. Pretty

  1265. close to

  1266. what Jesus

  1267. was on

  1268. about,

  1269. in fact.

  1270. Citizenship

  1271. in heaven

  1272. means death

  1273. will not

  1274. be the

  1275. end.

  1276. In fact,

  1277. Paul implies

  1278. this very

  1279. strongly in

  1280. this passage,

  1281. that we

  1282. shall have

  1283. a new

  1284. body that

  1285. will be

  1286. more like

  1287. the risen

  1288. Christ.

  1289. When you

  1290. define yourself,

  1291. do you

  1292. ever think

  1293. about this?

  1294. Do you

  1295. ever think

  1296. that your

  1297. identity,

  1298. primarily,

  1299. if you're a

  1300. follower of

  1301. Jesus Christ,

  1302. is exactly

  1303. in that

  1304. truth?

  1305. Being in

  1306. Christ

  1307. is my

  1308. identity.

  1309. And what

  1310. do we need

  1311. to do with

  1312. citizenship?

  1313. We need

  1314. to gratefully

  1315. receive it

  1316. and not

  1317. put it to

  1318. the recesses

  1319. of our

  1320. thinking

  1321. or of

  1322. our minds.

  1323. My

  1324. own family,

  1325. according to

  1326. my sister,

  1327. came,

  1328. my mother's

  1329. family,

  1330. came here

  1331. from Germany

  1332. at some

  1333. point in the

  1334. past.

  1335. I think

  1336. my

  1337. great-great

  1338. grandfather

  1339. must have

  1340. seen the

  1341. writing on

  1342. the wall

  1343. for Jewish

  1344. people and

  1345. decided that

  1346. Europe was

  1347. not a safe

  1348. place.

  1349. So they

  1350. came to

  1351. this country.

  1352. If you

  1353. are Jewish,

  1354. most Jews

  1355. would say to

  1356. you that

  1357. their primary

  1358. identity,

  1359. even if

  1360. they don't

  1361. practice

  1362. Jewish

  1363. religion,

  1364. is that

  1365. they're

  1366. Jewish.

  1367. When my

  1368. family came

  1369. here,

  1370. they decided

  1371. the only

  1372. honest thing

  1373. to do

  1374. was to

  1375. deny

  1376. their

  1377. Jewishness.

  1378. And so

  1379. my grandfather

  1380. opened a

  1381. chain of

  1382. butcher shops

  1383. in the

  1384. north of

  1385. England,

  1386. northwest,

  1387. and sold

  1388. pork.

  1389. forbidden

  1390. in the

  1391. Torah,

  1392. the law.

  1393. Let me

  1394. ask you a

  1395. question.

  1396. Are you

  1397. hiding your

  1398. citizenship?

  1399. Are you

  1400. frightened

  1401. of being

  1402. found out

  1403. to be a

  1404. follower of

  1405. Jesus Christ?

  1406. Those of you

  1407. who still have

  1408. paid employment

  1409. in the West

  1410. would have

  1411. very good

  1412. reason to

  1413. be a little

  1414. anxious

  1415. about coming

  1416. out too

  1417. strongly in

  1418. your identity?

  1419. When I was

  1420. in the

  1421. House of

  1422. Lords,

  1423. I cannot

  1424. tell you

  1425. how many

  1426. maiden

  1427. speeches I

  1428. heard.

  1429. Only once,

  1430. only once,

  1431. did I hear

  1432. somebody in a

  1433. maiden speech

  1434. own up to

  1435. their citizenship

  1436. in heaven.

  1437. there was a

  1438. good friend

  1439. of mine

  1440. called

  1441. Michael

  1442. Farmer,

  1443. Lord Farmer,

  1444. as it is

  1445. now.

  1446. He stood

  1447. up in

  1448. that chamber

  1449. and he

  1450. nailed it.

  1451. I have

  1452. maximum

  1453. respect for

  1454. him.

  1455. And it

  1456. made me

  1457. think,

  1458. you know,

  1459. maybe I've

  1460. got to nail

  1461. it a bit

  1462. more often

  1463. than I'm

  1464. inclined to

  1465. do.

  1466. Anybody

  1467. sitting in

  1468. church today

  1469. who feels

  1470. the same,

  1471. I would

  1472. think so.

  1473. Friends,

  1474. we're

  1475. citizens in

  1476. heaven.

  1477. Someone say

  1478. amen.

  1479. Friends,

  1480. we are

  1481. citizens of

  1482. heaven.

  1483. heaven.

  1484. Someone say

  1485. hallelujah.

  1486. Friends,

  1487. we are

  1488. citizens of

  1489. heaven.

  1490. Somebody

  1491. shout,

  1492. thank you

  1493. Lord.

  1494. But you

  1495. shout a bit

  1496. louder if you

  1497. go down to

  1498. the football,

  1499. right?

  1500. I want to

  1501. just end by

  1502. saying to

  1503. you,

  1504. as I said

  1505. at the

  1506. beginning,

  1507. as I said

  1508. last week,

  1509. and as I

  1510. will say

  1511. till they

  1512. drag me

  1513. off this

  1514. planet.

  1515. Friends,

  1516. this may

  1517. not feel

  1518. like our

  1519. time,

  1520. but it

  1521. is our

  1522. time.

  1523. Stand up,

  1524. speak up,

  1525. pray up,

  1526. and let's

  1527. see what

  1528. happens.

  1529. Jesus

  1530. started with

  1531. twelve

  1532. men.

  1533. Think what

  1534. we could

  1535. do.

  1536. Imagine it.

  1537. God,

  1538. but it

  1539. needs you

  1540. to begin

  1541. by owning

  1542. your

  1543. citizenship.

  1544. Let's

  1545. pray.

  1546. Father God,

  1547. we thank

  1548. you that

  1549. we are

  1550. citizens.

  1551. Lord,

  1552. not because

  1553. we're any

  1554. great

  1555. shakes,

  1556. or because

  1557. we earned

  1558. our way

  1559. into your

  1560. presence,

  1561. but Lord,

  1562. because of

  1563. your grace.

  1564. Your love

  1565. shown to

  1566. us,

  1567. even though,

  1568. Lord,

  1569. we all know

  1570. that we

  1571. don't

  1572. deserve

  1573. it.

  1574. So,

  1575. Father,

  1576. come,

  1577. we pray

  1578. today.

  1579. Fill our

  1580. hearts,

  1581. fill our

  1582. minds,

  1583. fill our

  1584. souls with

  1585. this wonderful

  1586. truth that

  1587. we are

  1588. citizens of

  1589. heaven,

  1590. that we

  1591. can let

  1592. go of

  1593. the past,

  1594. and Lord,

  1595. you will

  1596. heal us

  1597. of anything

  1598. that today

  1599. distracts us

  1600. down.

  1601. so,

  1602. Lord,

  1603. bless this

  1604. congregation,

  1605. I pray

  1606. thee.

  1607. Lord,

  1608. that they

  1609. may bless

  1610. many in

  1611. your name

  1612. and to

  1613. your glory,

  1614. and the

  1615. people who

  1616. agreed,

  1617. said together,

  1618. Amen.
