  1. What does it mean to be liberated in our life? What does it mean to be free? The dictionary

  2. definition is freed from social conventions to be freed from enemy occupation. The Bible this

  3. morning introduces us to a woman. We don't know her name, we're not told. The woman has been caught

  4. jointly in the act of adultery with a man. That's really important to point out that it takes two.

  5. But she's the one that they drag and yet as scripture tells us she will be liberated by love

  6. and grace, humility and forgiveness. The people who accused her brought her to Jesus

  7. and who was teaching in the temple courts. They brought him at that time right into the middle

  8. of the heart of where the religious community meet. It's a place where people have come

  9. to be with Jesus. They were fascinated with his teaching. They were there, they were gathered

  10. wondering what he would do or say next. And then they drag this woman in. You couldn't arrange a more

  11. public stage for this to be played out. And yet here is Jesus and the religious leaders quote the law

  12. which says that we should stone her to death. What do you say? What do you say Jesus? What do you say

  13. about this situation? Because we want to hear shockingly the law by which they abided said exactly that.

  14. Here were the leaders seeking to discredit Jesus. They'd seen him do the miracles. They'd seen the way in

  15. which he'd forgiven people. Everything that was contrary to the law. It was a catch. It was a trap.

  16. They were here to set him up. Did they care about this woman? No they didn't. She was just going to be

  17. collateral damage because they wanted to make their point and uphold the law. They didn't care about what

  18. happened to this woman. They just wanted to enforce their way and wanted to catch Jesus out. The religious

  19. leaders had heard the reports of this rabbi about his increasing influence in their lives and in the

  20. lives of people. People were following him. This man was a threat. This man Jesus who shows grace to

  21. tax collectors. Who gathers prostitutes. Who speaks to the unclean. Who eats with people who the religious

  22. leaders would never eat with. People who they had branded as being unworthy of God's love and God's

  23. righteousness and forgiveness. And so by placing this woman in front of him clearly guilty in

  24. their eyes would Jesus. Would Jesus show her mercy? Would he break with the conventions? Could they

  25. point their fingers at him and claim him to be a heretic? Maybe to be a false prophet? A rabbi who

  26. doesn't uphold the law? You see the picture? That was their goal. That was their intention. But this

  27. is Jesus. This is the Jesus that we know. Who I guess Jesus knew their hearts. He knew their motives. He knew

  28. their intentions. He saw the trap before it arrived. He noticed their insecurities maybe because they had

  29. come ready and they had come armed to do what they were going to do according to their law.

  30. You know what? Says Jesus. Do you know what? You're right about the law. That's what the law says. You were

  31. right about the punishment that she should be stoned to death. But not today. But not today.

  32. Because let the one among you who is without sin be the first one to throw the stone at her.

  33. At this point those who heard him began to go away one at a time. The older ones first. I find that

  34. really interesting in this account that the older ones went first. Why was that? Why was that? Perhaps

  35. are they older and wiser? Perhaps were they aware more of their own sin? Perhaps they knew the law better

  36. than those that were younger? Perhaps they too in their hearts knew that they had no right to cast this

  37. stone. Maybe the younger ones there stayed. They were in high arousal. Maybe ready and zealous to show

  38. others how they upheld the law. Maybe they wanted to see blood spilt that day just to show that they were in line

  39. with all the conventions. That they could be whipped up into hate. We see it again and again. We saw it crucify him.

  40. A whole group that would come together and be whipped up. It happens and it happens today. But on this day

  41. they knew that to act would be blasphemous and they would be the one facing the punishment.

  42. So they dropped their rocks.

  43. Jesus was left with the woman

  44. and his disciples as well. Can you imagine the moment? I guess

  45. the stillness

  46. just like that the scene has been transformed.

  47. What was a place of chaos

  48. and hate is now being transformed

  49. into a place of grace.

  50. The storm of anger and judgment

  51. has moved on.

  52. And I love this line

  53. because it is so Jesus.

  54. And if you have heard this

  55. in your life

  56. as I have many times

  57. Jesus straightened up and asked her

  58. woman where are they?

  59. Woman where are they?

  60. Has no one condemned you?

  61. What a great line.

  62. No one sir

  63. she said

  64. then neither do I condemn you

  65. Jesus declares.

  66. Go now

  67. and leave

  68. your life

  69. of sin.

  70. It's a beautiful picture

  71. of grace

  72. that we're given this morning

  73. that in a moment

  74. this woman who is under judgment

  75. of the law

  76. is liberated

  77. by love.

  78. she is free.

  79. We've been singing

  80. about that this morning.

  81. Free to leave behind her

  82. what was death

  83. or very nearly death

  84. and to live a new life.

  85. Free

  86. to leave

  87. her life

  88. of sin.

  89. Totally

  90. freed.

  91. Jesus

  92. brings mercy

  93. and love

  94. humility

  95. and grace

  96. into the heart

  97. of conflict

  98. and judgment

  99. and we so often

  100. miss the essential

  101. in verse 6

  102. and 9

  103. because when we get

  104. to verse 6

  105. and 9

  106. where Jesus

  107. bent down

  108. and started to write

  109. on the ground

  110. with his finger

  111. and he straightened up

  112. and said

  113. let any one of you

  114. as without sin

  115. be the first

  116. to throw a stone at her.

  117. Again he stooped down

  118. and wrote on the ground.

  119. Now you may be thinking

  120. now

  121. Clive's going to tell us

  122. what he wrote

  123. in the ground.

  124. I'm sorry

  125. to disappoint you.

  126. There's been several

  127. that have made

  128. several suggestions

  129. as to what he would

  130. have written

  131. and what he did

  132. but we're not told.

  133. But again

  134. commentaries

  135. have speculated

  136. perhaps more than

  137. focusing on

  138. what he was writing

  139. Jesus

  140. stoops down

  141. twice.

  142. Jewish men

  143. didn't do that

  144. in the presence

  145. of a woman.

  146. he stoops down

  147. twice

  148. and shows

  149. his humility

  150. in the face

  151. of a woman

  152. who has been

  153. brought to him

  154. effectively

  155. being found

  156. in a place of sin

  157. and he stoops

  158. down

  159. twice.

  160. What an amazing

  161. saviour that we have

  162. who meets with us

  163. especially

  164. in the presence

  165. and let's put a marker

  166. in the sand today

  167. that if anybody

  168. tells you

  169. that the Bible

  170. is misogynistic

  171. against women

  172. clearly they haven't

  173. read it

  174. or they don't

  175. understand it

  176. because Jesus

  177. did more

  178. in three years

  179. of public ministry

  180. than any culture

  181. has done

  182. in thousands

  183. of years

  184. to raise up

  185. the value

  186. dignity

  187. and richness

  188. he places

  189. on this woman

  190. and all women.

  191. Amen?

  192. Amen.

  193. Let's not forget

  194. his teaching

  195. to the religious leaders

  196. too that day

  197. because

  198. they had to

  199. look at themselves

  200. they had to

  201. look at the hate

  202. in their own eyes

  203. they had to look

  204. at their religious

  205. piety

  206. their holier

  207. than thou

  208. attitudes

  209. with unforgiveness

  210. in their hearts

  211. and stones

  212. in their hands

  213. these leaders

  214. seeking to

  215. discredit him

  216. yet Jesus

  217. liberated them

  218. too

  219. because he revealed

  220. to them

  221. where they were wrong

  222. they too

  223. had to walk

  224. away

  225. wrong

  226. about how

  227. the law

  228. of God

  229. is designed

  230. to work

  231. and yes

  232. they should

  233. love the Lord

  234. their God

  235. with all their heart

  236. with all their soul

  237. with all their mind

  238. etc

  239. but they should

  240. also love

  241. their neighbour

  242. as themselves

  243. on these two

  244. laws

  245. hang

  246. all the

  247. prophets

  248. and the prophets

  249. as Jesus

  250. reminds us

  251. yes there will

  252. be a judgement

  253. yes there will

  254. be a death

  255. but it won't

  256. be hers

  257. and it won't

  258. be yours

  259. and it won't

  260. be from these

  261. stones

  262. it will be

  263. from me

  264. says Jesus

  265. and it will

  266. be from a cross

  267. that's the freedom

  268. you see the link

  269. I was thinking

  270. as I read

  271. through this scripture

  272. Jesus humbles

  273. himself twice

  274. before this woman

  275. and before the crowd

  276. in front of this woman

  277. who said

  278. and he's done

  279. the same

  280. for you and me

  281. humbling himself

  282. by entering

  283. this world

  284. as a vulnerable

  285. baby

  286. and secondly

  287. as he humbles

  288. himself on a cross

  289. by dying for us

  290. and rising again

  291. that we can have

  292. freedom

  293. and eternal life

  294. there's so many

  295. links in this scripture

  296. that you don't

  297. take it just

  298. at face value

  299. there is so much

  300. in here

  301. that speaks

  302. of the Jesus

  303. that we know

  304. and that we love

  305. and that played

  306. out that day

  307. on the stage

  308. to free us

  309. to liberate us

  310. from the power

  311. of death and sin

  312. to free us

  313. from any power

  314. the enemy may try

  315. to hold over us

  316. from the accusations

  317. from the judgment

  318. from the people

  319. who point

  320. at us

  321. that we

  322. are free

  323. within the love

  324. of God

  325. in him

  326. there is

  327. no condemnation

  328. I just sensed

  329. this morning

  330. that there may be

  331. those of us

  332. who need to hear

  333. that afresh

  334. that in Christ

  335. there is

  336. no condemnation

  337. as people

  338. come with their

  339. stones

  340. to judge you

  341. in Christ

  342. there is

  343. no condemnation

  344. we are forgiven

  345. and we are free

  346. when we meet

  347. with Jesus

  348. we don't know

  349. what happened

  350. to this woman's

  351. story

  352. we don't know

  353. what happened

  354. after

  355. after this

  356. dramatic

  357. encounter

  358. we can only

  359. imagine

  360. one can only

  361. imagine

  362. somebody

  363. who is

  364. forever changed

  365. who walks

  366. away

  367. her eyes

  368. have been

  369. opened

  370. to the actions

  371. of what she

  372. was doing

  373. sin no longer

  374. held an appeal

  375. it once did

  376. and she walks

  377. free

  378. considering what

  379. a free life

  380. would be

  381. what has been

  382. left behind her

  383. and what lays

  384. before her

  385. in freedom

  386. that she has

  387. in her life

  388. and when we

  389. meet Jesus

  390. sin no longer

  391. has a hold

  392. sin no longer

  393. has its fatal

  394. attraction on us

  395. grace changes

  396. our perspective

  397. when we are

  398. born again

  399. in the power

  400. of the Holy Spirit

  401. he breaks

  402. through

  403. and once

  404. we lived

  405. only to

  406. please ourselves

  407. but when we

  408. have been forgiven

  409. our motivation

  410. changes

  411. we are now

  412. live

  413. to please

  414. God

  415. do we know

  416. that powerful

  417. forgiveness

  418. in our lives

  419. I hope we do

  420. I sincerely

  421. hope we do

  422. as we worship

  423. as we give

  424. thanks for our

  425. liberation

  426. our freedom

  427. here this morning

  428. to be able

  429. to just come

  430. and to worship

  431. as one

  432. without fear

  433. of people

  434. breaking in the

  435. doors

  436. to drag us

  437. out

  438. are we giving

  439. thanks for our

  440. liberation

  441. as we heard

  442. as we sang

  443. about day

  444. by day

  445. moment

  446. by moment

  447. we have

  448. moved from

  449. death to

  450. new life

  451. in Christ

  452. and before

  453. we walk

  454. away today

  455. I suppose

  456. the challenge

  457. is for me

  458. and I hope

  459. the challenge

  460. is for you

  461. is what

  462. stones do

  463. we need

  464. to drop

  465. where we

  466. judge other

  467. people

  468. what stones

  469. do we

  470. carry

  471. that we

  472. hold on

  473. to

  474. that we

  475. hold on

  476. to firmly

  477. where suddenly

  478. judgment

  479. comes to

  480. mind

  481. and the

  482. stones

  483. maybe

  484. that we

  485. need

  486. to drop

  487. knowing

  488. the love

  489. maybe one

  490. two

  491. maybe more

  492. how many

  493. stones

  494. do we

  495. need to

  496. drop

  497. today

  498. and what

  499. do those

  500. stones

  501. look like

  502. for us

  503. that we

  504. carry

  505. to pass

  506. judgment

  507. on others

  508. our thoughts

  509. our comments

  510. harsh opinions

  511. maybe even

  512. just that

  513. glance

  514. Jesus

  515. says

  516. to those

  517. that

  518. gathered

  519. drop

  520. your

  521. stones

  522. and leave

  523. this one

  524. to me

  525. leave

  526. this to

  527. me

  528. walk

  529. away

  530. remembering

  531. and give

  532. thanks for

  533. the good

  534. life

  535. that I

  536. have given

  537. you

  538. to live

  539. because you

  540. are liberated

  541. and free

  542. because of

  543. what I have

  544. done

  545. and what I

  546. continue to

  547. do

  548. the liberating

  549. love of God

  550. invites us

  551. to leave

  552. the judgment

  553. to him

  554. to look

  555. at ourselves

  556. to drop

  557. the stones

  558. we so

  559. often pick

  560. up

  561. to throw

  562. at others

  563. and in

  564. doing so

  565. he raises

  566. us up

  567. to new

  568. life in

  569. him

  570. shall we

  571. pray

  572. raise us

  573. up Lord

  574. we pray

  575. free us

  576. from seeking

  577. to be

  578. judge

  579. and jury

  580. we leave

  581. that to

  582. you Lord

  583. forgive us

  584. our sin

  585. thank you

  586. Lord that

  587. you free

  588. us to

  589. sin no

  590. more

  591. Lord give

  592. us clean

  593. hands and

  594. a pure

  595. heart

  596. in Jesus

  597. name

  598. Amen
