  1. Good morning, everyone.

  2. Let's bow our heads, shall we, for a prayer before I open my mouth.

  3. We just sung these words to God, faithful forever, perfect in love, you are sovereign

  4. over us.

  5. Father, we thank you that you are a sovereign God, and Lord, when the world around us is

  6. in turmoil, when the world a little closer to home is in turmoil, we pray that we might

  7. leave this place today sure and certain that whatever's happening, you are still in control.

  8. So, Father, would you open our eyes, would you open our ears, and open our hearts, that

  9. we might see you as you are, and Lord, trust in who you are, and live as though we trust

  10. in who you are.

  11. And we pray these things in Christ's name.

  12. Amen.

  13. So, I want to preach on a verse from that rather curious reading we had from the book of Daniel.

  14. The book of Daniel, I think, is a remarkable book, but I want to talk to you from Daniel

    Daniel 7:13

  15. chapter 7, verses 13 and 14.

  16. Daniel says this,

  17. In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the

  18. clouds of heaven.

  19. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence.

  20. He was given authority, glory, and sovereign power.

  21. All nations and peoples of every language worshipped him.

  22. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one

  23. that will never be destroyed.

  24. The book of Daniel is a peculiarly difficult book, and part of the reason it's difficult is

  25. that the scholars, whoever they are, are very discordant about when it was written.

  26. Most modern scholars think that it was written around about 160 BC, whereas traditionally the

  27. church thought that the book of Daniel was written probably in the 6th or 7th century, in

  28. other words, hundreds of years before.

  29. And there's an interesting reason for that divergence.

  30. And it's this, that modern scholars can no longer accept that anybody who prophesied anything

  31. in the Bible that came true, modern scholars couldn't accept that it was authentic.

  32. They thought it must be after the event that they did their prophecies, rather than before

  33. the event.

  34. So you need to know, before I start, that I am not a modern scholar.

  35. I think this was written 6 or 7 centuries before Jesus came to earth.

  36. And I think that makes the prophecy, though I agree the language is, let's say, tricky.

  37. The language is a little tricky.

  38. That what Daniel was prophesying here was unbelievably brought to bear in the coming of Jesus.

  39. Those of you who know your Bibles will know that the text I just read to you is reminiscent

  40. of Mark's Gospel, chapter 6, where Jesus said of himself, the Son of Man will come on clouds

  41. of glory.

  42. Daniel knew something.

  43. And his prophecies and his book, I think, if you've never read it, I mean, okay, there are

  44. some spooky bits, a bit like this.

  45. But I mean, the story of Daniel.

  46. Daniel, who probably is mostly known for surviving the fiery furnace, and then, just to kind of

  47. keep him interested, he had to survive the lion's den.

  48. All because he was prepared to stand up for his faith in God.

  49. He didn't know the Lord Jesus personally, he didn't know about the death and resurrection

  50. of Jesus, he didn't know about atonement, he didn't know any of these things.

  51. But he chose to put his trust in God.

  52. And I want to say to you that when I saw what my subject was today, my heart skipped a beat.

  53. And there's a reason for that.

  54. I think to myself, how dare I stand up in front of all you and talk about the sovereignty of

  55. God in a world where there is more turmoil than most of us have seen in our lifetime?

  56. Why?

  57. Now, here's the thing.

  58. Daniel prophesied it.

  59. All that language about four horns, we're told in chapter 7, a little further on than we

  60. read this morning.

  61. When Daniel had his vision, here's a wonderful understatement, right?

  62. Daniel says, I, Daniel, was troubled in spirit.

  63. Wouldn't you be if you had a dream like that?

  64. I think most of you are going to get your medication fixed.

  65. So God spoke to him again.

  66. And in verse 16 it says he gave an interpretation.

  67. The four great beasts are four kingdoms that will rise from the earth.

  68. I don't know whether you've noticed it, but in world affairs, in global affairs just now,

  69. there are four dynasties that are posing a huge threat to what we might call global peace,

  70. if there ever was such a thing.

  71. The first one is China and its expansionist policies in the Southern Pacific.

  72. Put together with the fact that China, as we sit here comfortably in a warm church on Sunday

  73. morning, China is buying up just about every last piece of fertile land in Africa.

  74. Of course, this is expansionism.

  75. The Chinese reckon that their population will be 1.5 billion by 2035,

  76. and somehow they're going to have to feed those people.

  77. The second great beast in our world is Russian expansionism,

  78. and the fear that Ukraine might just be the beginning of something which might continue.

  79. There are plenty of people in the satellite states of the old Soviet Union

  80. who are terrified that what Putin wants to do is to remake the old Soviet Union.

  81. Apparently there are some people in this country who think that would be great.

  82. Thirdly, the unstable, again, another understatement,

  83. the unstable leadership of North Korea.

  84. I don't know about you, but I mean, I take a look at that funny little guy that runs the show,

  85. and I think to myself, you know, this is almost comical,

  86. except that, of course, he's developing long-range missiles

  87. that can deliver lethal damage into countries around.

  88. You remember that wasn't that long ago there.

  89. He decided to fire missiles, not missiles that were armed,

  90. but missiles over Japan just to kind of keep them in line.

  91. And then last, but certainly not least, the appalling situation.

  92. We see in a highly volatile and febrile situation in the Middle East.

  93. You couldn't really stand up and speak about sovereignty

  94. in a more volatile global situation,

  95. but then when you come home, it doesn't read much better.

  96. The cost of living crisis.

  97. I know that there will be some of you in the house this morning

  98. who are really worried about your financial future,

  99. about whether you will be able to afford even basic things.

  100. Some of you are worried because you think you might be ill,

  101. and the NHS, not my phrase, somebody else is on the verge of collapse.

  102. It is reckoned that by this time next year,

  103. there will be over 8 million people on waiting lists,

  104. and some of them will have life-threatening conditions.

  105. Law and order.

  106. Oh, my goodness.

  107. The last recorded statistics from the Office of National Statistics

  108. tell us that in the last year they kept figures

  109. only 5.6 of all reported crime ended up with a prosecution.

  110. Our prisons are completely overcrowded,

  111. and the delay in courts is frankly shocking.

  112. Nobody goes around anymore saying justice delayed

  113. is justice denied anymore.

  114. The environmental challenge.

  115. The confused moral compass of our nation.

  116. And finally, the state of the church.

  117. A.N. Wilson, speaking about the Church of England,

  118. wrote this in the, I think it was the Times newspaper,

  119. it might have been the Daily Telegraph, I can't remember.

  120. He said this,

  121. Christianity is of its essence contra mundum,

  122. that means against the world.

  123. Its values invert those of liberal modern life.

  124. The hierarchy of the established church, he goes on,

  125. I was one of them,

  126. is largely composed of people,

  127. sorry, of men and women,

  128. whose mindset is entirely shaped by that godless liberalism.

  129. We're members of that church.

  130. I was a leader in that church,

  131. and believe me,

  132. I do not accept the tenets,

  133. I think you've got the message about this,

  134. I do not accept the tenets of modern liberalism.

  135. So, I have to ask myself,

  136. and ask you,

  137. in the context of this global,

  138. national,

  139. and maybe personal turmoil,

  140. how on earth

  141. do we make sense of God's sovereignty?

  142. How dare we

  143. even think about talking about it?

  144. And I hope by the time

  145. you leave church this morning,

  146. you will be reassured

  147. that no matter what is going on in the world,

  148. what is going on in the United Kingdom,

  149. what is going on in your life,

  150. I hope you'll be reassured

  151. that God is still in control.

  152. And so I ask myself the question,

  153. are there any clues from Scripture?

  154. It's Bible Sunday after all,

  155. as we've been reminded.

  156. Are there any clues from Scripture

  157. that might help us?

  158. Well, the first thing is this,

  159. that the Bible,

  160. throughout,

  161. makes it clear

  162. that all this turbulence

  163. will happen

  164. before Jesus returns.

  165. Daniel chapter 7

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  166. would be a very good example of this.

  167. You remember the first bit of Daniel's vision

  168. is about the four horns,

  169. which represent the four beasts

  170. who will rise up in the world

  171. and cause carnage.

  172. The last bit of our reading

  173. was about the Son of Man

  174. who will return

  175. and will have authority

  176. and power,

  177. sovereign power,

  178. over the world order.

  179. The Bible makes it clear throughout

  180. that all this will happen.

  181. In 2 Timothy chapter 3,

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  182. a chapter that some of you

  183. may be familiar with.

  184. Paul writes this,

  185. mark this, he says,

  186. chapter 3, verse 1,

  187. there will be terrible times

  188. in the last days.

  189. People will be lovers of themselves,

  190. lovers of money,

  191. boastful, proud, abusive,

  192. disobedient to their parents,

  193. ungrateful, unholy,

  194. without love,

  195. unforgiving,

  196. slanderous,

  197. without self-control,

  198. brutal,

  199. not lovers of the good,

  200. treacherous, rash,

  201. conceited lovers of pleasure

  202. rather than lovers of God.

  203. And that's just for starters.

  204. Does that ring any bells with you?

  205. I have stood here many times

  206. and said one of the big problems

  207. of our society

  208. is lost any sense

  209. of coherent meaning.

  210. People seem to think

  211. by their behavior

  212. that the way,

  213. the only way you find meaning

  214. in life

  215. is to get as much money

  216. as you can

  217. and have a good time.

  218. And you say,

  219. Mike,

  220. are you against a good time?

  221. No, I quite like a good time

  222. personally.

  223. But there are limits

  224. to how far I will go

  225. to create that good time.

  226. Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  227. another passage

  228. which talks about

  229. the world in turmoil.

  230. The reason for it,

  231. says Paul in Romans 1,

  232. it's very simple.

  233. It's the world

  234. is turning godless.

  235. When the world turns godless,

  236. this is the kind of stuff

  237. that will emerge.

  238. In one way,

  239. we shouldn't even be surprised,

  240. should we?

  241. The second thing

  242. that's a clue

  243. from scripture is this.

  244. It is the idea

  245. that at the moment

  246. when we open our eyes

  247. and look around,

  248. even those of us

  249. who regard ourselves

  250. as having insight

  251. and intuition,

  252. when we look at the world,

  253. we only see partially.

  254. The difficult thing

  255. when bad things are happening,

  256. in the world,

  257. in your life,

  258. in our country,

  259. whatever,

  260. the difficult thing

  261. is that question,

  262. how come a loving God

  263. allows this?

  264. that must be a question

  265. that anybody

  266. who is half intelligent

  267. would ask themselves,

  268. what is going on,

  269. Lord?

  270. I did give this message

  271. a subtitle,

  272. which probably I should have

  273. read to you a little earlier,

  274. but I said,

  275. where do you go?

  276. My subtitle was,

  277. where do you go

  278. when it seems

  279. that the wheels

  280. are falling off?

  281. of the globe,

  282. of the nation,

  283. of your life?

  284. I think there are two things

  285. we need to think about

  286. in the light of that question.

  287. Why does a loving God

  288. allow this?

  289. Firstly,

  290. our perspective

  291. when we look at adversity

  292. is always partial.

  293. in 1 Corinthians 13,

  294. interestingly,

  295. a Bible passage

  296. which is mostly read

  297. at weddings,

  298. but at the,

  299. towards the end

  300. of that short chapter,

  301. you remember,

  302. it's a chapter about love,

  303. you know,

  304. love is patient,

  305. love is kind,

  306. just like most marriages.

  307. And Paul writes this,

  308. he said,

  309. when I was a child,

  310. I taught like a child,

  311. I thought like a child,

  312. I reasoned like a child.

  313. When I became a man,

  314. I put childish ways

  315. behind me.

  316. Now,

  317. he says,

  318. now,

  319. in the moment,

  320. to use a current jargon,

  321. now we see

  322. but a poor reflection.

  323. Then,

  324. we shall see

  325. face to face.

  326. Now I know

  327. in part.

  328. Then I shall know

  329. fully,

  330. even as I

  331. am fully known.

  332. I don't think

  333. that means

  334. that our question

  335. about why God

  336. allows such things

  337. is wrong.

  338. I just think

  339. that what Paul writes there

  340. gives that question

  341. a different context.

  342. We're told

  343. that finally

  344. we will have to live

  345. with some

  346. unanswered questions.

  347. When I was a young fellow,

  348. I thought to myself

  349. when I became a Christian

  350. that faith

  351. had all the answers.

  352. I'm sure now

  353. that faith

  354. actually helps me live

  355. with all my

  356. unanswered questions.

  357. And I know

  358. that kind of faith

  359. can help you

  360. as well.

  361. What

  362. will come?

  363. What will be

  364. when we meet the Lord

  365. face to face?

  366. Is it everything

  367. we don't understand now?

  368. Everything

  369. that challenges

  370. the very roots

  371. of our faith

  372. will one day

  373. be made clear.

  374. Your questions

  375. will be answered.

  376. Secondly,

  377. in relation

  378. to this difficult question,

  379. why does a loving God

  380. allow this?

  381. God

  382. chose,

  383. God chose

  384. to give us

  385. free will.

  386. the ability

  387. to make

  388. choices,

  389. but also

  390. the responsibility

  391. to take

  392. responsibility

  393. for those

  394. choices.

  395. We have to

  396. live

  397. to bear with

  398. the choices

  399. we make.

  400. Ezekiel chapter

    Ezekiel 18 chapter mention

  401. 18,

  402. God says to

  403. a people

  404. who are

  405. in exile

  406. and desperate

  407. to escape

  408. responsibility,

  409. God says

  410. to them,

  411. don't go

  412. around

  413. blaming

  414. everybody

  415. else

  416. for your

  417. situation.

  418. Why?

  419. God says

  420. to them,

  421. the soul

  422. that sins

  423. will surely

  424. die.

  425. You might,

  426. if you are

  427. of a

  428. philosophical

  429. nature,

  430. ask the

  431. question,

  432. well,

  433. why would

  434. God

  435. give us

  436. the ability

  437. to make

  438. choices?

  439. Wouldn't it

  440. be better

  441. if we had

  442. no choice

  443. and therefore

  444. God made

  445. all the

  446. choices

  447. and we

  448. were like

  449. puppets

  450. on a

  451. string

  452. somehow

  453. pulled,

  454. the strings

  455. being pulled

  456. by the

  457. divine

  458. puppeteer.

  459. In the

  460. book of

  461. Genesis,

  462. right at

  463. the beginning,

  464. we read

  465. of a

  466. perfect

  467. world

  468. called

  469. the

  470. Garden

  471. of Eden.

  472. Apparently,

  473. it's

  474. somewhere

  475. in the

  476. Middle East,

  477. I believe

  478. in the

  479. country of

  480. Iraq right

  481. now.

  482. It's just

  483. a bit

  484. difficult

  485. to get

  486. to see

  487. it in

  488. these

  489. current

  490. times.

  491. In

  492. Genesis,

  493. we read

  494. of the

  495. man and

  496. woman

  497. living in

  498. a sin-free

  499. environment

  500. in this

  501. beautiful

  502. garden.

  503. And God

  504. says just

  505. one thing

  506. you must

  507. not do.

  508. I mean,

  509. that in

  510. itself is

  511. a kind

  512. of attractive

  513. possibility,

  514. isn't it?

  515. I mean,

  516. are you

  517. like this?

  518. So,

  519. when I

  520. was at

  521. college,

  522. only the

  523. dons of

  524. my

  525. university

  526. could walk

  527. on the

  528. grass.

  529. Could

  530. not

  531. resist

  532. walking

  533. on the

  534. grass.

  535. God

  536. says don't

  537. do one

  538. thing.

  539. Don't

  540. eat

  541. of the

  542. fruit

  543. of the

  544. tree

  545. of the

  546. knowledge

  547. of good

  548. and evil.

  549. You know

  550. what happens.

  551. And it's

  552. happened from

  553. that day

  554. onwards.

  555. that our

  556. relationship

  557. which before

  558. the fall,

  559. before that

  560. event of

  561. disobedience,

  562. ever since

  563. then,

  564. we have

  565. chosen to

  566. go our

  567. own way

  568. rather than

  569. God's way.

  570. And that is

  571. why we

  572. need a

  573. savior.

  574. To those

  575. of you

  576. who think

  577. that God

  578. might just

  579. be a good

  580. friend in

  581. heaven,

  582. you missed

  583. the point.

  584. What you

  585. need, my

  586. friend, is a

  587. rescue plan.

  588. A rescue

  589. plan that

  590. will help

  591. you avoid

  592. the consequences

  593. of your

  594. sinfulness.

  595. And here

  596. I have to

  597. mention an

  598. idea that's

  599. gathered huge

  600. momentum in

  601. modern society.

  602. It's an

  603. idea called

  604. determinism.

  605. And of

  606. course, like

  607. most bad

  608. ideas, up

  609. to a point

  610. it's right,

  611. but when

  612. it's pursued

  613. more than

  614. that which

  615. is reasonable

  616. becomes a

  617. very bad

  618. idea.

  619. Let me

  620. try and

  621. give you a

  622. definition of

  623. determinism.

  624. I can

  625. imagine over

  626. Sunday lunch

  627. you're going

  628. to be saying

  629. to people,

  630. wow, this

  631. morning we

  632. heard a

  633. philosophical

  634. definition of

  635. determinism.

  636. Enjoy.

  637. Here's a

  638. definition, the

  639. doctrine that

  640. all events,

  641. including human

  642. action, are

  643. ultimately determined

  644. by causes

  645. regarded as

  646. external to

  647. the will.

  648. Let me

  649. say that again

  650. because that's

  651. the platform

  652. of it, the

  653. basis.

  654. The doctrine

  655. that all

  656. events, including

  657. human action,

  658. are ultimately

  659. determined by

  660. causes regarded

  661. as external to

  662. the will.

  663. It goes on.

  664. Some philosophers

  665. have taken

  666. determinism to

  667. imply that

  668. individual human

  669. beings, that's

  670. you, that

  671. individual human

  672. beings have no

  673. free will and

  674. cannot be held

  675. morally responsible

  676. for their

  677. actions.

  678. Seriously?

  679. I mean, if

  680. that is taken

  681. to its nth degree,

  682. what the

  683. philosopher here is

  684. telling you is you

  685. can live in

  686. whatever way you

  687. want, you can

  688. commit as much

  689. sin as you

  690. want, and it

  691. will never be

  692. regarded as your

  693. fault.

  694. Let me ask you

  695. a question.

  696. Don't put your

  697. hands up.

  698. Does that

  699. shock you?

  700. That seriously

  701. intelligent people

  702. would take a

  703. half-God idea,

  704. half-good idea,

  705. and turn it into

  706. a monstrous idea?

  707. Immediately, you

  708. can see the

  709. attraction of this

  710. doctrine.

  711. It means that I

  712. never have to

  713. take responsibility

  714. for the choices

  715. I make, because

  716. it's not my

  717. fault.

  718. I say it has

  719. some semblance

  720. in truth, this

  721. idea, because

  722. we know that

  723. poverty has life

  724. outcomes that

  725. are often

  726. diminished.

  727. But even the

  728. poor have

  729. choices to make.

  730. And to suggest

  731. that all poverty

  732. is going to lead

  733. to bad choices,

  734. is patronizing

  735. on people who

  736. have been brought

  737. up in poverty

  738. and made good

  739. choices.

  740. I suppose a good

  741. example of that

  742. right now is

  743. the way people

  744. are starting to

  745. think about

  746. shoplifting.

  747. And you may

  748. have picked up

  749. on this, but

  750. the idea is

  751. shoplifting is

  752. now a victimless

  753. crime.

  754. Based on the

  755. lie, then

  756. actually it's

  757. only poor people

  758. who go

  759. shoplifting, and

  760. because they're

  761. poor, it's not

  762. their fault,

  763. therefore we must

  764. forgive them.

  765. They mustn't be

  766. prosecuted.

  767. How patronizing.

  768. How patronizing

  769. on all the

  770. wonderful people

  771. who live in

  772. poverty, who

  773. don't decide to

  774. go and

  775. shoplift.

  776. Counterintuitively,

  777. when the church

  778. is confused, when

  779. there are those

  780. big questions to

  781. be answered, when

  782. the world is in

  783. turmoil, the

  784. early Christians,

  785. instead of

  786. carping about

  787. God's sovereignty,

  788. felt the need to

  789. express it

  790. clearly.

  791. God's sovereignty,

  792. and not only did

  793. they want to

  794. express God's

  795. sovereignty clearly,

  796. they wanted to

  797. live as though

  798. they believed in

  799. the light of

  800. God's sovereignty.

  801. You remember in

  802. Acts chapter 4,

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  803. there's a moment

  804. when the future

  805. of the church is

  806. put under hideous

  807. pressure.

  808. Peter and John

  809. are told by the

  810. Jewish council,

  811. you must no

  812. longer speak in

  813. the name of the

  814. Lord Jesus.

  815. Can you imagine

  816. where the church

  817. would be if

  818. Peter and John

  819. had shut up

  820. about the

  821. Christian faith

  822. from day one?

  823. We'd be in a

  824. worse state than

  825. we were.

  826. I doubt we'd

  827. have lasted this

  828. long, to be

  829. honest.

  830. I think

  831. Christianity

  832. would have

  833. just returned

  834. within Judaism

  835. and still be

  836. waiting for the

  837. Lord Jesus to

  838. come a first

  839. time.

  840. Now, in

  841. those early

  842. days, they

  843. were stopped.

  844. It's interesting,

  845. isn't it?

  846. The opponents

  847. of the

  848. Christian faith

  849. knew from day

  850. one that if

  851. you want to

  852. stop the

  853. church from

  854. spreading, all

  855. you need to

  856. do is stop

  857. it from

  858. speaking.

  859. So why

  860. didn't they go

  861. back and say

  862. to the believers

  863. who were gathered

  864. together, okay

  865. guys, the

  866. game's up.

  867. There'll be no

  868. more preaching

  869. from today.

  870. We've got to

  871. keep, if I

  872. might borrow a

  873. Jewish word,

  874. shtum.

  875. So they

  876. go back to

  877. the believers.

  878. This is it.

  879. Verse 23.

  880. On their

  881. release, Peter

  882. and John went

  883. back to their

  884. own people and

  885. reported all

  886. that the chief

  887. priests and

  888. elders had

  889. said.

  890. When they

  891. heard this,

  892. they raised

  893. their voices

  894. together in

  895. prayer to

  896. God.

  897. Guess what

  898. their prayer

  899. begins with?

  900. Sovereign

  901. Lord, you

  902. made the

  903. heaven and

  904. the earth

  905. and the

  906. sea and

  907. everything in

  908. them.

  909. You spoke

  910. by the

  911. Holy Spirit

  912. through the

  913. mouth of

  914. your servant

  915. our father

  916. David.

  917. When the

  918. world's in

  919. turmoil, when

  920. your life's in

  921. turmoil, when

  922. the nation's in

  923. turmoil, the

  924. worst thing you

  925. can do is to

  926. give up on the

  927. idea of God's

  928. sovereignty.

  929. In the face

  930. of a world

  931. seemingly out

  932. of control, the

  933. church in Acts

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  934. chapter 4 turned

  935. to the God who

  936. is in control and

  937. trusted him even

  938. though it might

  939. seem that he

  940. wasn't in

  941. control.

  942. God is

  943. sovereign,

  944. irrespective of

  945. whether or not

  946. you or I can

  947. see the evidence

  948. of it right

  949. now.

  950. Faith means

  951. holding on to

  952. God even

  953. when we don't

  954. feel like it.

  955. Remember Job?

  956. I can't think of

  957. a more calamitous

  958. life scenario

  959. than Job's.

  960. Lost his wealth,

  961. lost his flocks,

  962. lost his family.

  963. The only thing he

  964. didn't lose was his

  965. wife and she

  966. wasn't much help

  967. was she?

  968. You know what her

  969. advice to Job

  970. was?

  971. She said to Job,

  972. listen, why don't

  973. you give up on God

  974. and curse him?

  975. Some would say

  976. that was a bad

  977. marriage.

  978. So finally,

  979. and briefly,

  980. here are three

  981. things you need

  982. to do.

  983. James chapter 4

    James 4 chapter mention

  984. and verse 8,

  985. come close to

  986. God and God

  987. will come close

  988. to you.

  989. James goes on,

  990. wash your hands

  991. you sinners,

  992. purify your hearts

  993. for your loyalty

  994. is divided between

  995. God and the world.

  996. Does that speak to

  997. you?

  998. Purify your hearts.

  999. Your loyalty is

  1000. divided between

  1001. God and the world.

  1002. Listen,

  1003. we need in this

  1004. time of turmoil,

  1005. we need to

  1006. redouble our

  1007. efforts to trust

  1008. in God

  1009. and live as

  1010. though we're

  1011. trusting in God.

  1012. In the idea,

  1013. there is this

  1014. idea of the

  1015. faithful remnant.

  1016. The people who

  1017. hang on in there

  1018. with God,

  1019. even when their

  1020. world is falling

  1021. apart.

  1022. Friends,

  1023. that's what God

  1024. wants from you

  1025. right now.

  1026. That we will

  1027. form a faithful

  1028. remnant.

  1029. I was talking

  1030. with Tim Simpson

  1031. before the service

  1032. and he told me

  1033. the most moving

  1034. thing,

  1035. a wonderful example

  1036. of what I'm

  1037. talking about.

  1038. He said that

  1039. he had seen

  1040. some video clip

  1041. on social media

  1042. of Muslims

  1043. and Christians

  1044. meeting together.

  1045. Go ahead.

  1046. Sorry,

  1047. Arab and Jewish

  1048. believers

  1049. meeting together.

  1050. See,

  1051. that's what I

  1052. call a faithful

  1053. remnant.

  1054. Sure,

  1055. Tim wouldn't

  1056. mind me

  1057. telling you this,

  1058. but when he

  1059. saw that,

  1060. he had a God

  1061. moment.

  1062. Suddenly,

  1063. I guess he

  1064. saw something

  1065. that in the

  1066. current

  1067. tragedy

  1068. is very

  1069. difficult to

  1070. see.

  1071. We need to

  1072. be that

  1073. faithful remnant,

  1074. friends.

  1075. you find

  1076. this in

  1077. the prophets,

  1078. but you

  1079. find it

  1080. very graphically,

  1081. don't you,

  1082. in the story

  1083. of Jonah.

  1084. Genesis

    Genesis 7 chapter mention

  1085. chapter 7,

  1086. God sees

  1087. the sin

  1088. in the

  1089. world

  1090. and decides,

  1091. this is what

  1092. God says to

  1093. himself,

  1094. I've had

  1095. enough of

  1096. this,

  1097. and I've

  1098. had enough

  1099. of these

  1100. people,

  1101. I'm going

  1102. to wipe

  1103. them out.

  1104. And it

  1105. just tells

  1106. us in

  1107. Genesis

    Genesis 7 chapter mention

  1108. chapter 7,

  1109. this amazing

  1110. one word,

  1111. one sentence

  1112. phrase,

  1113. Noah was

  1114. a righteous

  1115. man.

  1116. Noah was

  1117. a righteous

  1118. man.

  1119. Do you know

  1120. what God's

  1121. looking for

  1122. church?

  1123. He's looking

  1124. for righteous

  1125. men and

  1126. women who

  1127. will trust

  1128. him and

  1129. live like

  1130. they trust

  1131. him.

  1132. second

  1133. thing for

  1134. you to

  1135. take home

  1136. today is

  1137. remember

  1138. without being

  1139. complacent,

  1140. in the

  1141. end it

  1142. will all

  1143. come right.

  1144. It will

  1145. all come

  1146. right.

  1147. That's the

  1148. prophecy of

  1149. Daniel in

  1150. chapter 7,

  1151. in the end

  1152. the son of

  1153. man will

  1154. come and

  1155. that shouldn't

  1156. lead us to

  1157. complacency.

  1158. That's the

  1159. message of

  1160. Daniel,

  1161. amazingly,

  1162. predicted

  1163. hundreds of

  1164. years before

  1165. Jesus walked

  1166. the earth.

  1167. So live

  1168. the life

  1169. that God

  1170. calls you

  1171. to.

  1172. Don't be

  1173. half-hearted.

  1174. Don't be

  1175. divided in

  1176. your loyalty

  1177. between God

  1178. and the

  1179. world.

  1180. Step it

  1181. up.

  1182. I want to

  1183. say,

  1184. sorry this is

  1185. a cheap

  1186. advertisement,

  1187. but I do

  1188. want to say

  1189. you could

  1190. start it up

  1191. by making

  1192. a decision

  1193. to come to

  1194. the prayer

  1195. meeting that

  1196. will be held

  1197. I think next

  1198. Monday being

  1199. the first

  1200. Monday in

  1201. the month.

  1202. Am I

  1203. right,

  1204. Susie?

  1205. You could

  1206. come along

  1207. to that and

  1208. pray for this

  1209. turmoil that we

  1210. find ourselves

  1211. in.

  1212. That would

  1213. cost you an

  1214. hour of your

  1215. time.

  1216. It might

  1217. mean you

  1218. would miss

  1219. EastEnders.

  1220. What is your

  1221. faith worth?

  1222. Remember,

  1223. without being

  1224. complacent,

  1225. it will be

  1226. all right.

  1227. Jesus said

  1228. in John 14,

  1229. if you love

  1230. me, you

  1231. will obey

  1232. my commandments.

  1233. I will ask

  1234. the Father

  1235. and he will

  1236. give you

  1237. another helper

  1238. who will

  1239. stay with you

  1240. forever.

  1241. He is the

  1242. Spirit who

  1243. reveals the

  1244. truth about

  1245. God.

  1246. I pray,

  1247. friends,

  1248. that God

  1249. will reveal

  1250. the truth

  1251. about himself

  1252. to us,

  1253. about his

  1254. majesty,

  1255. about his

  1256. glory,

  1257. about his

  1258. sovereignty.

  1259. And finally,

  1260. always remember

  1261. that all we

  1262. see happening,

  1263. as I've

  1264. said,

  1265. is predicted

  1266. in Holy

  1267. Scripture.

  1268. Whatever we

  1269. may feel,

  1270. God is still

  1271. in control.

  1272. Remember,

  1273. without becoming

  1274. complacent,

  1275. it will be

  1276. all right.

  1277. I saw a

  1278. man,

  1279. I don't

  1280. know if

  1281. he was

  1282. Muslim,

  1283. Christian,

  1284. I don't

  1285. know what

  1286. he was,

  1287. Jewish,

  1288. whatever,

  1289. and he

  1290. was saying

  1291. something that

  1292. I'd not

  1293. heard anybody

  1294. else say

  1295. in all the

  1296. broadcast footage

  1297. that we've

  1298. seen in the

  1299. past weeks

  1300. about the

  1301. terrible

  1302. situation in

  1303. the Middle

  1304. East.

  1305. He said,

  1306. in the end,

  1307. I believe

  1308. that good

  1309. will come

  1310. out of

  1311. this.

  1312. He said,

  1313. so much

  1314. pain and

  1315. so much

  1316. blood cannot

  1317. be shed

  1318. without there

  1319. being a

  1320. good ending.

  1321. I have

  1322. hope,

  1323. he said.

  1324. I have no

  1325. idea of the

  1326. religious statement

  1327. to that guy,

  1328. but I bless

  1329. him for what

  1330. he said,

  1331. in a world

  1332. of turmoil

  1333. and helplessness

  1334. and hopelessness.

  1335. I don't

  1336. know whether

  1337. he felt his

  1338. revelation was

  1339. from God,

  1340. but certainly,

  1341. friends,

  1342. don't forget,

  1343. while there's a

  1344. God in heaven

  1345. and there are

  1346. faithful people

  1347. on earth,

  1348. we need not

  1349. lose hope.

  1350. Why don't we

  1351. pray?

  1352. Why don't we

  1353. pray?

  1354. Oh my gosh,

  1355. Lord,

  1356. there's such

  1357. a lot to

  1358. take in.

  1359. A lot in the

  1360. world around

  1361. us,

  1362. a lot in

  1363. our lives.

  1364. Father,

  1365. I pray for

  1366. people in the

  1367. house today

  1368. who feel

  1369. without hope,

  1370. who are in

  1371. danger of

  1372. giving up.

  1373. Lord,

  1374. would you

  1375. please reveal

  1376. the truth

  1377. about yourself

  1378. to them?

  1379. Father,

  1380. I pray for

  1381. those in

  1382. the house

  1383. who agree

  1384. with the

  1385. words that

  1386. I have

  1387. spoken but

  1388. still know

  1389. that they

  1390. are divided

  1391. between loyalty

  1392. to you,

  1393. Father,

  1394. and loyalty

  1395. to the

  1396. things of

  1397. this world.

  1398. Holy Spirit,

  1399. would you

  1400. please convict

  1401. us of our

  1402. sin?

  1403. Father,

  1404. and Father,

  1405. with Jean

  1406. who prayed

  1407. earlier for

  1408. the terrible

  1409. turmoil,

  1410. Lord,

  1411. we pray

  1412. that you

  1413. would raise

  1414. up men

  1415. and women

  1416. of peace

  1417. who would

  1418. speak into

  1419. these situations

  1420. that we've

  1421. talked about.

  1422. And Lord,

  1423. some of them

  1424. will no doubt

  1425. lose their

  1426. lives for

  1427. speaking in

  1428. such a way.

  1429. And Lord,

  1430. finally we

  1431. pray as

  1432. your word

  1433. would bid

  1434. us.

  1435. Come,

  1436. Lord Jesus.

  1437. Come.

  1438. Come in

  1439. the grace

  1440. and power

  1441. of your

  1442. Holy Spirit.

  1443. Come into

  1444. our lives,

  1445. Lord,

  1446. and set us

  1447. on fire

  1448. with love

  1449. for you

  1450. and for

  1451. the world

  1452. that you

  1453. sent your

  1454. son to

  1455. die for

  1456. and that

  1457. you love

  1458. that much.

  1459. So,

  1460. Father,

  1461. we want

  1462. to,

  1463. Lord,

  1464. in the

  1465. words of

  1466. Jack D,

  1467. we pray

  1468. that we

  1469. might go

  1470. away from

  1471. here and

  1472. think about

  1473. what's

  1474. happened

  1475. this morning.

  1476. Lord,

  1477. that we

  1478. might not

  1479. just know

  1480. about the

  1481. faithful

  1482. remnant,

  1483. but that,

  1484. Lord,

  1485. we might be

  1486. part of

  1487. it.

  1488. And we

  1489. pray these

  1490. things in

  1491. Jesus'

  1492. name and

  1493. to his

  1494. amazing

  1495. glory and

  1496. the people

  1497. who agreed

  1498. said together

  1499. in a loud

  1500. voice,

  1501. Amen.
