  1. Before I speak to you, why don't we pray together as we sit, let's bow our heads.

  2. Our gracious Father, we thank you so much for this amazing gift of prayer.

  3. And Lord, we want to seek your forgiveness for the way in which we have either ignored or abused that gift.

  4. And Father, we want to be able to pray like Jesus prayed.

  5. Lord, like the Bible teaches us how to pray.

  6. And so Father, we pray now that you give us open ears and open hearts and open minds that we might receive your truth.

  7. And your truth would help us to grow more like Jesus.

  8. In his name, Amen.

  9. Jesus said this is how you should pray.

  10. Anyway, the philosopher and mathematician Blaise Pascal said, kind of classic overstatement in a way, but it makes a point.

  11. He said, all of humanity's problems stem from an inability to sit quietly in a room alone.

  12. Wow.

  13. Let me say that again.

  14. All of humanity's problems stem from an inability to sit quietly in a room alone.

  15. This year, in Virginia State University, an experiment was carried out with 55 people who were asked to go and sit in a room where there was absolutely nothing.

  16. They were asked to sit there for 15 minutes on their own.

  17. And the only thing that there was, was a pedestal with a button on it.

  18. And if you press the button, you got a fairly bad electric shock.

  19. So the choice is, you can either do what the researcher Tim Wilson says, and that is sit there doing nothing for just 15 minutes.

  20. Or, if you want to do something, go press the button and do an amazing shock through your ankle.

  21. Now, 67% of men, 67% of men went and pressed the button and took the shock option.

  22. 25% of women, yay, 25% of women did the same thing.

  23. No wonder there was that book that sold a lot of copies in the 1970s, which is called What Happens When Women Pray.

  24. We're still trying to find out what happens when men pray, obviously.

  25. Through the majority of church history, people who were followers of Jesus had this very novel idea.

  26. That trying to live life at high speed was a great enemy of the spiritual life.

  27. If you want to live life in the fast lane, if you want to live life in a way that's microwaved,

  28. then what you need to know is you will very likely undermine your ability to develop a relationship with God.

  29. Lewis Carroll in Alice in Wonderland has something to say about that.

  30. You remember when Alice goes into the domain of the Red Queen.

  31. And she has to run all the time just to stand still.

  32. And the Red Queen says to her,

  33. Now you see, said the Red Queen, it takes all the running you can do to keep in the same place.

  34. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that.

  35. What a commentary that is on the world in which we live.

  36. Even if you ask retired folks these days, how are you?

  37. They'll say, I'm very busy.

  38. Of course, there's another side to that.

  39. And the side is that if some people, lots of people live life in the fast track,

  40. then there are some people who live life in a way that simply wastes time away.

  41. Daytime television, smartphones, social media, gaming, fooling about online.

  42. Seriously, as much as racing, speeding can make a mess of your relationship with Jesus.

  43. Why am I telling you this?

  44. Because I don't today want to tell you so much techniques on how to pray.

  45. But what I intend to do is to lay some foundations that you need to know about

  46. if you are ever going to develop a fertile prayer life.

  47. I'm not going to give you those smart anachronisms.

  48. Some of us do Lectio Divina on a daily basis.

  49. Their great acronym is PRAY, P-R-A-Y.

  50. Pause, reflect and rejoice, ask and yield.

  51. That's not a bad thing to hold in your mind.

  52. Or act, adoration, confession, thanksgiving and supplication.

  53. I thought I wasn't going to be able to remember that.

  54. It's my age.

  55. I want to talk to you more about these foundational things.

  56. And I want you to know that if you were to even appropriate 20% of what I say in the next few minutes,

  57. your life, the life and ministry of this church,

  58. the life of the nation and the life of the world might be changed by God.

  59. And if I ask, you know, who wouldn't want that,

  60. I don't imagine there'd be too many people sticking their hands up.

  61. Church I was minister at.

  62. I had one overriding mission in recruiting people.

  63. And that is, if you're not very good, get people around you who are.

  64. I had a marvelous team of people at different times.

  65. Every Sunday, there were lots of people in church.

  66. Giving was going up through the roof.

  67. 75% of our growth as a church was conversion growth.

  68. People who'd not known Jesus before.

  69. 30 plus home groups, though some of them did little more than go skating together.

  70. But in all that, there lay an amazing ministry to me.

  71. Sorry, an amazing mystery to me.

  72. And it's this.

  73. With all those numbers, with all those gifts, with all those people,

  74. our parish prayer meeting weekly could barely muster 30 people.

  75. I used to sit and think to myself, what would God do in this place

  76. if a few more people showed up?

  77. If on the back of only 30, he's doing all this.

  78. What if?

  79. What if?

  80. And I want you to ask yourself the question.

  81. If you started to take prayer more seriously,

  82. if you would come to prayer meetings and pray,

  83. what if?

  84. What might happen?

  85. We had a church weekend once,

  86. which a guy who became a bishop called Wallace Ben

  87. came and spoke about prayer for a whole weekend

  88. at some freezing cold place down in Sussex.

  89. For the next month,

  90. our prayer meeting was attended by hundreds of people.

  91. Literally.

  92. By three months, we were down to about 50 people,

  93. and after three months,

  94. we were back to the 30 people who came out.

  95. Largely older ladies,

  96. many of whom had been in the mission field.

  97. Today,

  98. in that church,

  99. we did six or seven services every Sunday.

  100. Today, there is one main service every Sunday,

  101. attended by 150 people.

  102. See,

  103. the life of a church is not just a photograph.

  104. It's a movie.

  105. It's a story.

  106. And if it's a story that continues

  107. on minimal prayer input,

  108. then I think it may come

  109. to a rather abrupt end.

  110. So here are three things

  111. that I want you to take home with you

  112. in your hearts today.

  113. The first thing is,

  114. you have to believe that prayer,

  115. individually and together,

  116. is important.

  117. There's plenty in the Bible about that.

  118. You remember in Acts chapter 4,

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  119. that critical moment

  120. when Peter and John

  121. are hauled by the Jewish council

  122. in Jerusalem,

  123. and they're told,

  124. you must not speak

  125. in the name of Jesus Christ any longer.

  126. Can you imagine

  127. what would have happened

  128. if they'd taken any notice?

  129. Well, one thing would be,

  130. you would not be sitting here today.

  131. I don't know what you would be doing,

  132. but you would not be in a church

  133. on a Sunday,

  134. worshipping the living God.

  135. So what do the disciples do?

  136. Do they decide to form a committee,

  137. the anti-persecution committee,

  138. with a chairman and a secretary,

  139. and hold endless meetings

  140. that go nowhere slowly?

  141. No.

  142. It said they went back to the believers,

  143. and they gathered together in prayer

  144. in one voice.

  145. You can read that prayer

  146. in its entirety

  147. in Acts chapter 14.

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  148. And at the end of that prayer,

  149. we read,

  150. the building they were in

  151. was shaken,

  152. and they all went out

  153. and preached the word of God boldly.

  154. Let me ask you a question.

  155. Do you think the church today

  156. needs a shaking like that?

  157. Someone say yes.

  158. Yes.

  159. Yes.

  160. How did that happen?

  161. Because the believers

  162. with one voice

  163. pray together.

  164. Prayer changes things.

  165. And if you're ever going to get started

  166. on prayer,

  167. then the one thing you need to understand is

  168. this is a worthwhile endeavor.

  169. This should not just be

  170. an optional extra

  171. for kind of religious fanatics.

  172. but an optional extra.

  173. The second thing is,

  174. and this is harsh,

  175. I'm going to give you a trigger warning

  176. at this stage.

  177. Because some of you

  178. have had prayers

  179. that God didn't answer.

  180. And I don't want anybody

  181. to leave this church

  182. feeling guilty,

  183. but here's a point

  184. that is really important.

  185. It's in Psalm 66

  186. and verse 18.

  187. And the psalmist says this,

  188. he says,

  189. if I had cherished sin

  190. in my heart,

  191. the Lord would not have heard me.

  192. Let me say that again.

  193. That's a serious point, isn't it?

  194. If I had cherished sin in my heart,

  195. cherished it,

  196. the Lord would not have heard me.

  197. See, my problem with sin

  198. and your problem with sin is,

  199. unfortunately,

  200. some of it's enjoyable.

  201. Wouldn't be a big problem to it.

  202. I've never seen that movie,

  203. The Exorcist,

  204. but somebody told me

  205. at one point,

  206. the little girl

  207. who's supposed to be possessed

  208. by the devil,

  209. her head's racing around

  210. at 360 degrees

  211. while she's vomiting bile.

  212. Luminous bile.

  213. I mean, if that was sin,

  214. you wouldn't have a problem

  215. avoiding it, would you?

  216. No.

  217. It's attractive to us.

  218. Gossip is attractive to us.

  219. Lust is attractive to us.

  220. These things that God says

  221. won't do you any good

  222. somehow have a lingering appeal to us.

  223. Here's what God says.

  224. If you had cherished sin in your heart,

  225. the Lord would not have heard you.

  226. You see, we go around saying

  227. there's no such thing

  228. as an unanswered prayer.

  229. And last week, if you were here,

  230. you heard a, I think,

  231. majestic talk

  232. from Russell

  233. about why that is

  234. and how

  235. we should respond

  236. when

  237. it feels like God

  238. doesn't hear us.

  239. If I had cherished sin in my heart,

  240. the Lord would not have heard me.

  241. Unconfessed sin,

  242. anger, bitterness, impurity

  243. will have a negative impact

  244. on my ability to pray effectually.

  245. The third thing is,

  246. prayer is for marathon runners

  247. and not for sprinters.

  248. So, you remember,

  249. there's that very strange story

  250. in Luke chapter 11,

    Luke 11:5–8

  251. verses 5 to 8,

  252. where the keeper of the house

  253. has gone to bed,

  254. locked up,

  255. turned off all the lights,

  256. I guess in their time

  257. that was blowing out

  258. all the candles,

  259. and he'd gone to bed.

  260. At midnight,

  261. there's a knock on the door.

  262. I mean, who hates that?

  263. I was in ministry,

  264. you know,

  265. there were two things I hated.

  266. One was people knocking on the door

  267. after 11 p.m. in the evening,

  268. and the other was

  269. shakily written notes

  270. coming through the door

  271. at a similar time.

  272. Usually,

  273. death threats

  274. or something like that.

  275. Okay?

  276. So, this guy

  277. hammers on the door.

  278. The owner of the house thinks,

  279. I'm going to play dead here.

  280. You know,

  281. just keeps going,

  282. keeps going,

  283. keeps going,

  284. keeps going.

  285. And then,

  286. the moral of this parable is,

  287. in the end,

  288. the master of the house

  289. gets up and does something.

  290. Because he's sick to death

  291. of the persistence

  292. of the guy hammering on the door.

  293. Well, he wants his loaf of bread

  294. for crying out loud.

  295. Why can't he wait

  296. until the shop opened?

  297. The message,

  298. says Jesus,

  299. is that we need to persist

  300. in our prayers.

  301. Most of the imperatives

  302. to pray

  303. in the New Testament

  304. are in the aorist tense.

  305. That is,

  306. they are continuous verbs.

  307. That is,

  308. pray and go on praying.

  309. Not the kind of people who,

  310. you know,

  311. say,

  312. I prayed about that,

  313. you know,

  314. tick the box,

  315. done,

  316. finished.

  317. No,

  318. we hammer on the door of heaven

  319. until God hears us.

  320. I love that verse

  321. in James chapter 5

    James 5 chapter mention

  322. where the writer

  323. of the epistle says,

  324. I can only remember,

  325. only ever remember

  326. the authorised version.

  327. The effectual,

  328. fervent prayer

  329. of the righteous man,

  330. righteous person

  331. in authorised version talk.

  332. The effectual,

  333. fervent prayer

  334. of the righteous man,

  335. availeth much.

  336. Wouldn't you like your prayers

  337. to avail a bit more?

  338. Apparently not.

  339. Would you?

  340. Yes,

  341. of course.

  342. Of course you would.

  343. And the thing about prayer

  344. is we nearly always focus

  345. on the outputs.

  346. What happened when I prayed?

  347. Did it work?

  348. Didn't it work?

  349. See,

  350. what I'm trying to help you with

  351. are the inputs.

  352. What are the things

  353. that you need to get sorted

  354. in your own life

  355. before you lock yourself away,

  356. says Jesus,

  357. on your knees?

  358. Don't babble like the pagans.

  359. Don't show up.

  360. Don't start praying

  361. in the middle of the high street

  362. with your arms in the air.

  363. I mean,

  364. don't let me stop you,

  365. but

  366. don't do that.

  367. It's the pagans that babble,

  368. said Jesus.

  369. I mean,

  370. it sounds like the pagans

  371. pray a lot more than we do.

  372. So,

  373. I've asked James

  374. to put just another

  375. short passage of Scripture

  376. up on the screen,

  377. which is from Mark 11,

    Mark 11:22–26

  378. verses 22 to 26.

  379. And just very briefly,

  380. three things from this passage,

  381. which I think are really,

  382. really important for us.

  383. And the background

  384. to what's gone on here

  385. is that

  386. you remember Jesus

  387. is walking along

  388. and

  389. he goes to pick

  390. some fruit

  391. from a fig tree.

  392. I mean,

  393. this is so out of character,

  394. isn't it?

  395. So,

  396. it's a fig tree

  397. and the Bible tells us

  398. it wasn't even

  399. a season for figs.

  400. So,

  401. Jesus goes to the fig tree

  402. and there's no fruit on it.

  403. And gentle Jesus,

  404. meek and mild,

  405. curses the fig tree.

  406. And they're walking

  407. past it the next day

  408. and Peter,

  409. good old Peter,

  410. you know,

  411. both feet,

  412. says,

  413. look,

  414. Master,

  415. the tree you cursed

  416. is shriveled.

  417. Isn't it amazing

  418. that we're amazed

  419. when God does

  420. what he says he'll do?

  421. That's not my point.

  422. It's then Jesus,

  423. like,

  424. goes off on one.

  425. And he starts by saying,

  426. have faith in God.

  427. Pretty basic in a way.

  428. He's teaching them here

  429. about how to pray as well.

  430. Have faith in God,

  431. he says.

  432. And what you need to know is

  433. that the Greek syntax

  434. of that sentence,

  435. see,

  436. a lot of preachers

  437. put the emphasis

  438. on the word faith.

  439. But the emphasis

  440. in the Greek language

  441. is on the word God.

  442. The issue is not

  443. how big is your faith.

  444. No,

  445. the issue is

  446. how big is your God.

  447. That's why,

  448. I think,

  449. when praying,

  450. we should spend

  451. some time praising

  452. and magnifying God

  453. in our hearts

  454. to remind ourselves

  455. that this is a big God.

  456. And this big God,

  457. Jesus tells us,

  458. nothing is impossible

  459. for him.

  460. Have faith in God.

  461. I've heard of messages

  462. in my life

  463. where I've gone out

  464. of the church

  465. with my tail

  466. between my legs

  467. because I thought

  468. I don't have enough faith.

  469. What did Jesus say?

  470. If you have faith

  471. the size of a mustard seed,

  472. go tell this mountain

  473. to throw itself

  474. into the sea

  475. and it will.

  476. Do you know how much faith

  477. a mustard seed

  478. would represent?

  479. Truthfully,

  480. your faith

  481. and my faith.

  482. It's not how much faith

  483. do you have.

  484. Most of us struggle

  485. a bit with that.

  486. It's how big

  487. is your God?

  488. How big is your God?

  489. You need to go home

  490. and think about that.

  491. The second thing

  492. about this passage

  493. is this.

  494. Jesus says

  495. all this stuff

  496. about making

  497. cosmetic changes.

  498. Incidentally,

  499. I don't think

  500. that Jesus intended us

  501. to make cosmetic changes

  502. to the universe

  503. by rearranging mountains.

  504. Mountains in the Bible

  505. mostly stand for

  506. massive problems.

  507. So Jesus says

  508. have faith in God.

  509. I tell you the truth.

  510. If anyone says

  511. this man

  512. go to throw yourself

  513. into the sea

  514. and does not doubt

  515. in his heart

  516. but believes

  517. that what he says

  518. will happen,

  519. it will be done

  520. for him

  521. or for her.

  522. Therefore,

  523. this passage

  524. is loaded

  525. with conjunctions.

  526. It's a flow

  527. of thought.

  528. It's not a stream

  529. of consciousness.

  530. It's a flow

  531. of direct thought.

  532. And Jesus says

  533. therefore,

  534. on the basis

  535. of what I've just said

  536. about your,

  537. if you have

  538. a big enough God

  539. amazing things

  540. can happen.

  541. Jesus says

  542. therefore,

  543. I tell you

  544. whatever you've

  545. asked for in prayer

  546. believe that you

  547. have received it

  548. and it will be yours.

  549. Wow.

  550. See,

  551. I wonder

  552. if together

  553. as a church

  554. we could start

  555. to think like that.

  556. Don't think about

  557. the size of your faith

  558. when I say that to you

  559. but think about

  560. the size of your God.

  561. Do you?

  562. Does anybody

  563. in the house

  564. believe that

  565. with God

  566. anything is possible?

  567. Nothing is impossible.

  568. Anybody believe that?

  569. Yes.

  570. See,

  571. I think that's

  572. a decent start.

  573. A decent start.

  574. So,

  575. believing prayer

  576. is important

  577. as well as

  578. faith in a big God.

  579. But the last thing

  580. and this,

  581. you know what,

  582. I wish I didn't

  583. have to say this

  584. to you.

  585. I really wish

  586. I didn't.

  587. So,

  588. you get

  589. faith

  590. in a big God,

  591. faith

  592. released by

  593. believing prayer

  594. and finally,

  595. prayer

  596. regulated

  597. by forgiveness.

  598. So,

  599. again,

  600. joined up

  601. thinking here,

  602. verse 25,

  603. and when you

  604. stand praying,

  605. if you hold

  606. anything against

  607. anyone,

  608. forgive him

  609. so that your

  610. Father in Heaven

  611. may forgive you

  612. your sins.

  613. Seriously?

  614. You think of

  615. anybody just now

  616. in your heart

  617. who you

  618. find it difficult

  619. to forgive?

  620. Maybe

  621. you're the kind

  622. of person

  623. who can't even

  624. forgive yourself.

  625. Never mind

  626. forgive others.

  627. See,

  628. Jesus says

  629. we've got to

  630. sort that.

  631. You say,

  632. wait a minute,

  633. Mike,

  634. the person

  635. I'm feeling

  636. mad about

  637. is dead

  638. now.

  639. So,

  640. that's not

  641. the point.

  642. The point

  643. is God

  644. wants to

  645. know that

  646. your heart

  647. is right

  648. in relation

  649. even to

  650. that dead

  651. person.

  652. some of

  653. you have

  654. undoubt

  655. with issues

  656. with parents

  657. who are

  658. no longer

  659. with us.

  660. Others of

  661. us hold

  662. on to

  663. stuff year

  664. in,

  665. year out.

  666. We even

  667. feed on it,

  668. some of us.

  669. God says,

  670. you want

  671. to be

  672. an effective

  673. prayer?

  674. Here's

  675. the thing,

  676. forgive.

  677. In

  678. Matthew's

  679. gospel,

  680. there are

  681. two really.

  682. Matthew says

  683. in the

  684. Sermon on

  685. the Mount,

  686. if your

  687. brother sins

  688. against you,

  689. leave your

  690. gift at the

  691. altar and

  692. clear off and

  693. go and seek

  694. forgiveness.

  695. If your

  696. brother sins

  697. against you,

  698. then in

  699. Matthew 18

  700. he says,

  701. if you sin

  702. against your

  703. brother,

  704. you still

  705. go.

  706. I mean,

  707. that's asking

  708. a lot,

  709. isn't it,

  710. of people

  711. like you

  712. and me?

  713. People who

  714. somewhere in

  715. our soul

  716. have a little

  717. black book

  718. and we keep

  719. the names

  720. of the people

  721. who've crossed

  722. us in the

  723. past.

  724. We have to

  725. let go of

  726. it,

  727. friends.

  728. Why?

  729. Because Jesus

  730. says,

  731. that believing

  732. prayer is

  733. regulated by

  734. our willingness

  735. to forgive.

  736. Our Father

  737. who art in

  738. heaven,

  739. blah,

  740. blah,

  741. blah,

  742. forgive us

  743. our sins

  744. as...

  745. I thought

  746. you'd know

  747. it better

  748. than that.

  749. Yeah.

  750. Amazing.

  751. So,

  752. how to pray?

  753. Have faith

  754. in God,

  755. big God.

  756. Secondly,

  757. exercise

  758. believing

  759. prayer.

  760. That is,

  761. put into

  762. your prayers

  763. the idea

  764. that with God

  765. all things

  766. are possible.

  767. Nothing

  768. is impossible.

  769. But please,

  770. don't forget

  771. that to some

  772. extent,

  773. the efficaciousness

  774. of your prayers

  775. will be impacted

  776. by your willingness

  777. to forgive

  778. others.

  779. somebody once

  780. said,

  781. it's a kind

  782. of rewriter

  783. of the Beatitudes,

  784. blessed are

  785. they that

  786. expect little

  787. for they

  788. will not

  789. be disappointed.

  790. Is that

  791. us?

  792. Do we have

  793. a vision

  794. for revival

  795. in Clevedon?

  796. Do you have

  797. any sense

  798. that God

  799. wants to

  800. work through

  801. you to

  802. make that

  803. happen,

  804. through your

  805. prayers,

  806. through your

  807. willingness,

  808. as Clive has

  809. reminded us

  810. to go and

  811. invite people?

  812. I wonder

  813. how many

  814. of you

  815. will show

  816. up a week

  817. tomorrow,

  818. that is

  819. December

  820. the 3rd?

  821. 4th.

  822. December

  823. the 4th,

  824. where there

  825. will be a

  826. prayer meeting

  827. for one hour

  828. of your life

  829. in this

  830. building

  831. somewhere,

  832. might even

  833. be in here

  834. if enough

  835. of you

  836. show up.

  837. and don't

  838. come because

  839. I don't know

  840. whether my

  841. prayers are

  842. up to

  843. public

  844. exposure.

  845. Listen,

  846. there will

  847. be no

  848. pressure on

  849. any soul

  850. in this

  851. church to

  852. pray aloud.

  853. I know

  854. some of you

  855. are terrified

  856. by that.

  857. Just come

  858. along and

  859. be there

  860. with the

  861. people who

  862. show up

  863. and pray

  864. with a

  865. heart that

  866. says,

  867. all things

  868. are possible

  869. with God.

  870. What do

  871. you think

  872. might happen?

  873. So in

  874. my life,

  875. just to

  876. conclude,

  877. I have

  878. seen some

  879. amazing

  880. answers to

  881. prayer.

  882. But

  883. unfortunately,

  884. by my

  885. standards,

  886. not enough.

  887. Okay?

  888. I'm going

  889. to tell you

  890. one.

  891. I just

  892. told you,

  893. you know,

  894. my theory

  895. in recruitment

  896. was if

  897. you're no

  898. good,

  899. get people

  900. who are

  901. good around

  902. you.

  903. I had

  904. a youth

  905. worker,

  906. Duncan

  907. Dyson

  908. was his

  909. name.

  910. He runs

  911. a charity

  912. now in

  913. Guatemala

  914. ministering

  915. to street

  916. kids.

  917. And I

  918. learned a lot

  919. from Duncan,

  920. although he

  921. used to

  922. row a lot

  923. as well,

  924. truthfully.

  925. Because I

  926. didn't have

  927. his faith

  928. threshold.

  929. It was my

  930. problem,

  931. not his.

  932. Right?

  933. So he

  934. comes into

  935. the staff

  936. meeting one

  937. morning and

  938. says,

  939. Mike,

  940. we need

  941. another

  942. full-time

  943. member on

  944. the youth

  945. team.

  946. I'm like,

  947. well,

  948. you've got

  949. four people

  950. already.

  951. He said,

  952. well,

  953. here's the,

  954. gave me the

  955. arguments for

  956. another staff

  957. person.

  958. I could see it.

  959. I said,

  960. look,

  961. Duncan,

  962. we might

  963. be able to

  964. scrape

  965. together another

  966. 30 grand or

  967. whatever it

  968. was to pay

  969. this person,

  970. but we're

  971. living in

  972. South

  973. Buckinghamshire.

  974. Housing,

  975. you can't

  976. buy a

  977. garage for

  978. less than

  979. 150 grand.

  980. I said,

  981. I'm doing,

  982. you know,

  983. I said,

  984. you know,

  985. do you have

  986. a plan for

  987. that?

  988. He said,

  989. yeah,

  990. we'll pray

  991. about it.

  992. I'm like,

  993. oh,

  994. you know,

  995. oh.

  996. So I

  997. smiled

  998. sweetly at

  999. him and

  1000. said,

  1001. yes,

  1002. of course.

  1003. Would you

  1004. like to

  1005. pray for

  1006. it,

  1007. Duncan?

  1008. Serve you

  1009. right,

  1010. you know,

  1011. him.

  1012. So he

  1013. prayed this

  1014. prayer that

  1015. was right

  1016. out,

  1017. you know,

  1018. in orbit

  1019. somewhere above

  1020. planet Earth

  1021. and

  1022. everyone in

  1023. that room

  1024. said amen

  1025. and very

  1026. few of us

  1027. meant it.

  1028. I said

  1029. amen,

  1030. I'm like,

  1031. yeah,

  1032. good luck

  1033. with that,

  1034. mate,

  1035. you know.

  1036. By the way,

  1037. amen doesn't

  1038. mean good luck

  1039. with that.

  1040. It means

  1041. so be it.

  1042. So we

  1043. prayed it.

  1044. That evening,

  1045. right,

  1046. that evening,

  1047. I get a

  1048. telephone call

  1049. from a guy

  1050. called Desmond

  1051. Waite,

  1052. sadly dead

  1053. now,

  1054. been converted

  1055. about three

  1056. months.

  1057. He says,

  1058. Mike,

  1059. I'm just

  1060. phoning you

  1061. up to

  1062. tell you

  1063. my dad's

  1064. died.

  1065. So I

  1066. went into

  1067. defensive

  1068. mode.

  1069. I was like,

  1070. oh my

  1071. goodness,

  1072. new Christian,

  1073. his dad

  1074. just died,

  1075. you know,

  1076. what the heck.

  1077. So I

  1078. started to

  1079. say,

  1080. well,

  1081. you know,

  1082. these days,

  1083. he said,

  1084. no,

  1085. no,

  1086. no,

  1087. no,

  1088. he said,

  1089. my dad's

  1090. been ill

  1091. for a

  1092. while,

  1093. he said,

  1094. I wanted

  1095. to phone

  1096. you because

  1097. he's left

  1098. me and

  1099. my brother

  1100. a house.

  1101. I'm like,

  1102. wow,

  1103. he said,

  1104. well,

  1105. it's quite

  1106. a large

  1107. house.

  1108. I'm like,

  1109. why is he

  1110. telling me

  1111. this?

  1112. He said,

  1113. it's got

  1114. 14 bedrooms.

  1115. I'm like,

  1116. you sure

  1117. that's not

  1118. a hotel?

  1119. He said,

  1120. then,

  1121. we're going

  1122. to sell

  1123. it and

  1124. the proceeds

  1125. are going

  1126. to be

  1127. shared between

  1128. me and

  1129. my brother.

  1130. He said,

  1131. I don't

  1132. know if

  1133. you've got

  1134. any housing

  1135. needs.

  1136. But he

  1137. said,

  1138. if you

  1139. want to

  1140. get a

  1141. house,

  1142. buy one

  1143. up to

  1144. 350,000.

  1145. With God,

  1146. nothing is

  1147. impossible.

  1148. Can we

  1149. start to

  1150. believe that

  1151. together?

  1152. Yes.

  1153. Can we

  1154. start to

  1155. pray like

  1156. we think

  1157. all things

  1158. are possible

  1159. with God?

  1160. Can we

  1161. start to

  1162. believe that

  1163. in this

  1164. town where

  1165. lots of

  1166. things feel

  1167. a bit

  1168. messed up

  1169. at the

  1170. moment,

  1171. that God

  1172. could become

  1173. the sovereign

  1174. Lord of

  1175. this town

  1176. that we

  1177. like to

  1178. live in

  1179. called

  1180. Clevedon?

  1181. Those of

  1182. you living

  1183. in it.

  1184. If you

  1185. live in

  1186. Portis

  1187. said,

  1188. good luck

  1189. with that.

  1190. Just

  1191. kidding.

  1192. Listen,

  1193. from today,

  1194. God's

  1195. whispering in

  1196. your ear

  1197. about any

  1198. of this

  1199. stuff.

  1200. From

  1201. today,

  1202. we could

  1203. start to

  1204. play our

  1205. part,

  1206. not only

  1207. in our

  1208. own

  1209. transformation,

  1210. I mean,

  1211. we're all

  1212. interested in

  1213. that,

  1214. aren't we?

  1215. You know,

  1216. millions of

  1217. books,

  1218. articles in

  1219. newspapers

  1220. every day,

  1221. you know,

  1222. go and

  1223. bury your

  1224. dog's

  1225. liver at

  1226. midnight,

  1227. you know,

  1228. at the

  1229. crossroads,

  1230. and you

  1231. start to

  1232. feel better.

  1233. I'm not

  1234. saying all

  1235. of that

  1236. stuff's

  1237. wrong,

  1238. but we're

  1239. all interested

  1240. in stuff,

  1241. but listen,

  1242. we need to

  1243. get a

  1244. bigger vision.

  1245. Town

  1246. transformation,

  1247. the

  1248. transformation

  1249. of our

  1250. nation.

  1251. and its

  1252. impact on

  1253. the global

  1254. world.

  1255. Friends,

  1256. let's pray.

  1257. Our

  1258. gracious

  1259. Father,

  1260. we thank

  1261. you so

  1262. much for

  1263. your

  1264. word,

  1265. and we're

  1266. immensely

  1267. grateful that

  1268. you encourage

  1269. us to

  1270. pray,

  1271. but Lord,

  1272. you do

  1273. put some

  1274. markers down

  1275. for us.

  1276. Father,

  1277. we want to

  1278. pray that

  1279. you'd open

  1280. our eyes

  1281. and give

  1282. us a

  1283. refreshed

  1284. vision of

  1285. yourself,

  1286. Lord,

  1287. that you

  1288. may become

  1289. bigger to

  1290. us in

  1291. such a way

  1292. that we

  1293. can pray

  1294. in the

  1295. faith that

  1296. Jesus spoke

  1297. about,

  1298. believing that

  1299. what we

  1300. pray for

  1301. might be

  1302. received.

  1303. Lord,

  1304. we want

  1305. to pray

  1306. for those

  1307. of us who

  1308. bear grudges

  1309. of God

  1310. unforgiveness

  1311. in our hearts.

  1312. Would you

  1313. this morning

  1314. give us a

  1315. fresh outpouring

  1316. of grace

  1317. that we

  1318. might be

  1319. the initiators

  1320. of seeking

  1321. forgiveness

  1322. and

  1323. reconciliation?

  1324. And Lord,

  1325. as if we

  1326. needed

  1327. reminding,

  1328. we say the

  1329. Lord's prayer

  1330. so often

  1331. in the

  1332. house

  1333. together.

  1334. Forgive us

  1335. our sins

  1336. as we

  1337. forgive

  1338. those who

  1339. sin against

  1340. us.

  1341. Lord,

  1342. pour out

  1343. your grace,

  1344. pour out

  1345. your spirit,

  1346. that we

  1347. might be

  1348. people of

  1349. peace,

  1350. people of

  1351. reconciliation.

  1352. And Lord,

  1353. we pray

  1354. to,

  1355. for those

  1356. who sit

  1357. here

  1358. uncomfortably,

  1359. when we

  1360. read verses

  1361. like Psalm

  1362. 66 and

  1363. verse 18,

  1364. if I cherish

  1365. sin in my

  1366. heart, the

  1367. Lord would

  1368. not have

  1369. heard me.

  1370. Lord,

  1371. help us

  1372. to come

  1373. clean before

  1374. you today.

  1375. Lord,

  1376. we pray

  1377. that you'd

  1378. hear our

  1379. prayers now,

  1380. not because

  1381. we have any

  1382. merit,

  1383. but because

  1384. we bring

  1385. them in the

  1386. name of

  1387. Jesus,

  1388. who the

  1389. Bible tells

  1390. us sits

  1391. at your

  1392. right hand

  1393. and lives

  1394. to make

  1395. intercession

  1396. for us

  1397. with God

  1398. the Father.

  1399. Father,

  1400. we pray

  1401. these things

  1402. in the

  1403. precious

  1404. name of

  1405. Jesus.

  1406. And the

  1407. people who

  1408. agreed and

  1409. wanted to

  1410. give themselves

  1411. over to

  1412. prayer said,

  1413. Amen.

  1414. Amen.

  1415. Thank you.
