  1. I'd like to carry out a couple of thought experiments this morning.

  2. Here's the first one.

  3. I'm going to ask you to imagine, to remember,

  4. a time in your life that you would perhaps regard as the happiest.

  5. I'm not going to ask you to share this with the person next to you or anywhere near you.

  6. I'm just going to ask you to think about it.

  7. So I want you to think about a moment in your life,

  8. it might have been a period of your life, say childhood, for example,

  9. or it might have been a particular day or a week,

  10. maybe a holiday, a special event, a special occasion,

  11. but something that you look back on that you regard as perhaps the happiest time in your life so far.

  12. I'll just give you a few moments to think about that.

  13. Okay, so think about something that was really special.

  14. And having thought about that thing, just ask yourself the question,

  15. what is it particularly about that memory or set of memories

  16. that gives you that really warm glow inside?

  17. And just hold on to that for a few moments.

  18. Now you've got that,

  19. here's a question.

  20. If you're really honest with yourself,

  21. what at that point in your life would have been not good?

  22. In other words, at some point, no matter how wonderful life was at that moment,

  23. I'm pretty sure that there would have been something going on in your life as well

  24. that was not so great.

  25. And the reason for I to say that, I think quite confidently,

  26. is that life is never perfect.

  27. There's always that combination of what you might call the blessings and the battles,

  28. or the battles and the blessings.

  29. And sometimes one becomes more prominent than the other.

  30. That's true of life completely.

  31. It's never perfect this side of eternity.

  32. And so as you think of that moment, that day, or that period of your life

  33. that you think of, that's what brings you that warm glow,

  34. what kind of troubles or concerns were going on at that time?

  35. For me, I'm thinking of two things.

  36. One thing I'm thinking of, time when I was a student.

  37. I loved being a student.

  38. It just was a time of, I think of straight away,

  39. I think it was a time of freedom and just learning so much as well.

  40. It was just such a great time for me, and I absolutely loved it.

  41. But I'm also aware that if I'm really honest with myself,

  42. that actually I very quickly forget about things like exams

  43. and all the crisis that goes with trying to meet essay deadlines

  44. and all the other stuff.

  45. The other sort of really pleasant thought that brings me a warm glow inside

  46. is when our children were really young, were really tiny.

  47. And then I kind of remember that actually there was a time

  48. when we had three of them under the age of four.

  49. And actually, do I need to even complete that sentence?

  50. The point is, is we look back on our lives at those times that we think,

  51. oh, that was just such an amazing time, wasn't it?

  52. And we look through those rose-tinted spectacles, don't we?

  53. Where we only see the positives, but not the negatives.

  54. So why is it then that when we look to the future,

  55. that instinct seems to be reversed?

  56. That we look to the future and our human instincts latch on

  57. to the things that we fear.

  58. The things that we get anxious and worried about

  59. and the things that could go wrong, probably won't most of the time,

  60. but we fear they might.

  61. And we find it difficult, if not impossible,

  62. to latch on to all that is positive.

  63. Christian hope is focused on an ultimate future

  64. where Christ will return and all will be made new.

  65. There will be no more suffering, no more death or dying or pain,

  66. no more tears, every last one of them will be wiped away.

  67. Ultimately, all of Scripture and all of the teachings of Jesus

  68. point towards that reality.

  69. And what I want to suggest is looking through the lens of hope

  70. is like putting on those rose-tinted spectacles,

  71. not to look back at the past, but to look at the future.

  72. Not in a way that denies the reality of pains and troubles of this life

  73. and the things that we might worry about,

  74. but actually focusing on those ultimate promises of God,

  75. such that those ultimate promises of life everlasting with him

  76. burn through the fog of the fears

  77. and everything that this life throws at us

  78. that might be described as in any way negative.

  79. And that embracing hope,

  80. and this is the challenge to all of us,

  81. embracing hope is daring to look through those glasses,

  82. through that lens.

  83. I want to suggest that it's about having a sense of readiness.

  84. It's about having a sense of expectancy,

  85. and it's about being focused.

  86. Firstly, it is about being ready.

  87. And in those words that we read just now,

  88. it says that it will happen like a thief coming in the night.

  89. It will be in an instant.

  90. We don't know how or when or exactly what that will look like,

  91. but we are promised that Jesus will return.

  92. We find that really hard to get our minds around how it will happen.

  93. But it will happen.

  94. And that's the promise of Scripture.

  95. That the world won't just gradually, slowly disintegrate

  96. into meaningless chaos,

  97. although it might feel like that at times.

  98. But God's got it in hand.

  99. And in an instant, he will return.

  100. Now, if we find that so hard to imagine,

  101. let's remember that our own individual personal ends

  102. actually will come,

  103. and we don't know when that's going to happen.

  104. We will all die.

  105. Now, that might sound like a really bleak thing

  106. to be saying on a Sunday morning,

  107. or at any time.

  108. But let's be honest.

  109. It's a reality.

  110. What is the saying?

  111. Death and taxes.

  112. The only two things of which we can be absolutely sure.

  113. It will happen.

  114. Life is finite.

  115. And we don't know,

  116. none of us know,

  117. when that is going to happen for us.

  118. So if we can grasp that reality,

  119. it's not such a greater reality,

  120. surely, to grasp that actually the same truth

  121. applies to the whole of the cosmos.

  122. It will come to an end,

  123. or rather, it will come to a new beginning.

  124. And the call to Christian hope,

  125. to see things through that lens,

  126. is a call to readiness,

  127. that sense of being poised

  128. to knowing that it can happen at any time.

  129. That's the first thing.

  130. The second thing is,

  131. it's about being expectant.

  132. Living in the light of the promises of God

  133. is about looking forward

  134. to the day of the Lord,

  135. as it's put in these verses that we read just now.

  136. Living in the light of God's promise

  137. and eternal future.

  138. So what does it look like

  139. as a daily reality to do that,

  140. to live with that sense of expectancy?

  141. Well, living in hope in that way,

  142. and again, this is a challenge to all of us,

  143. has to do with the way in which

  144. our minds latch on

  145. to those images of hope.

  146. See, when we talk about tomorrow,

  147. when we talk about the future,

  148. we are navigating pictures in our minds.

  149. When we think about the future,

  150. we think in pictures.

  151. As a matter of fact,

  152. we think in pictures most of the time.

  153. I said there were going to be two thought experiments.

  154. Here's the second one.

  155. I'm going to tell you a story.

  156. On my way here this morning,

  157. I met a dog.

  158. It was an ugly dog.

  159. And it was a big dog.

  160. And it was an aggressive dog.

  161. This thing wanted to bite me.

  162. And so I ran away from this dog,

  163. and it started to chase me.

  164. And as I ran down the road,

  165. it was coming after me,

  166. and so I jumped onto a car.

  167. Okay, I'll stop there.

  168. I was making all of that up.

  169. Firstly, let me tell you

  170. that I absolutely love dogs,

  171. and I would actually find it really hard

  172. to describe any dog as ugly.

  173. The second thing is,

  174. I also know that actually,

  175. if a dog is looking aggressive,

  176. running away from it

  177. is probably not the best thing to do.

  178. But stay with me

  179. for the purposes of the illustration.

  180. What was going on just now

  181. as I was telling you that story?

  182. I was feeding you

  183. a sequence of pictures.

  184. When I said I met a dog this morning,

  185. I doubt anybody in this room

  186. thought of the letters D-O-G.

  187. You had a picture of a dog.

  188. You saw your cute, adorable dog.

  189. Except when I said

  190. it was an ugly dog,

  191. in which case it was no longer your dog.

  192. When I told you it was a big dog,

  193. that little dog grew suddenly.

  194. And as I described this dog

  195. that was aggressive

  196. and it was chasing me down the street,

  197. you had this picture

  198. of this gnarly dog

  199. that was running after me

  200. along the road.

  201. All along the while,

  202. all the while,

  203. I was feeding you pictures.

  204. I was affecting the pictures

  205. in your mind.

  206. If you have the wrong

  207. sort of information,

  208. you have the wrong

  209. sort of pictures

  210. in your mind.

  211. And if you have the wrong

  212. pictures in your mind,

  213. you have the wrong

  214. expectations

  215. of the future.

  216. Living in hope

  217. means seeing things

  218. through the right

  219. sort of pictures.

  220. and this isn't always

  221. an easy thing

  222. for us to do.

  223. But the call

  224. to live in hope

  225. is to take those pictures

  226. that cause us

  227. so much fear

  228. and stress

  229. and trauma

  230. and to replace them

  231. with those ultimate pictures

  232. of hope.

  233. Picture

  234. of light.

  235. Picture of life.

  236. The picture

  237. where every last tear

  238. is wiped away.

  239. Where there's no more death

  240. or dying

  241. or mourning

  242. or suffering.

  243. Pictures that go

  244. far, far, far

  245. greater and deeper

  246. than the pictures

  247. that you started off

  248. this morning

  249. when I asked you

  250. think of something

  251. that represents

  252. happiest moment

  253. in your life so far.

  254. I mean,

  255. think of that

  256. and times it by a million

  257. and you still don't even

  258. get close

  259. as to what eternity

  260. will be like

  261. according to the promises

  262. of God.

  263. It's not pie in the sky

  264. when you die.

  265. It's a picture

  266. of hope

  267. that is set

  268. before us

  269. in scripture.

  270. A picture

  271. of how Christ

  272. will return

  273. and make all things new.

  274. And our calling

  275. is to live

  276. in that sense

  277. of expectation

  278. that it will

  279. come to pass.

  280. And when we have

  281. that picture

  282. in our mind

  283. when we allow

  284. that picture

  285. to navigate

  286. all the others

  287. all the other pictures

  288. as scary as they may be

  289. that we hold

  290. in our minds

  291. about the future

  292. and we carry with us

  293. fall into line

  294. and are put into

  295. that ultimate perspective

  296. as that image

  297. of resurrection hope

  298. that picture

  299. of hope

  300. burns through the fog

  301. and floods us

  302. with light.

  303. But the last thing is

  304. we're called

  305. to be focused

  306. with this.

  307. What does that mean?

  308. To be focused

  309. to be focused

  310. means

  311. to look forward

  312. to look forward

  313. in hope

  314. with Jesus

  315. front and centre.

  316. I'll share with you

  317. one last story.

  318. There's a story

  319. from years and years ago

  320. where a ship

  321. was brought in

  322. to harbour

  323. on a very

  324. very rough night.

  325. The waves

  326. were crashing

  327. and it was

  328. there was

  329. it was very dark

  330. and the account

  331. that I'm going

  332. to read to you

  333. is the account

  334. of the

  335. it was actually

  336. the wife

  337. of the captain

  338. of the ship

  339. who was escorted

  340. from the ship

  341. onto land

  342. in the midst

  343. of the darkness.

  344. She said this

  345. that one man

  346. came to me

  347. and said

  348. do not be afraid

  349. I will take care

  350. of you.

  351. Her account

  352. reads like this.

  353. He brought

  354. a peculiarly

  355. shaped

  356. dark lantern

  357. only

  358. single ray

  359. of light

  360. being emitted

  361. from a small

  362. circular

  363. opening.

  364. Now

  365. said he

  366. take my hand

  367. hold fast

  368. do not

  369. fear

  370. do not

  371. look about

  372. you

  373. or on

  374. either side

  375. of you

  376. only on

  377. the little

  378. spot

  379. lighted

  380. by my

  381. lantern

  382. and place

  383. your footsteps

  384. firmly

  385. right there.

  386. I heard

  387. the rushing

  388. of the waters

  389. and was still

  390. conscious of fear

  391. by looking

  392. steadily

  393. only where

  394. the light

  395. fell

  396. and planting

  397. my footsteps

  398. just there

  399. not turning

  400. either to the

  401. right

  402. or to the

  403. left

  404. clasping

  405. firmly

  406. the strong

  407. hand

  408. the danger

  409. was overcome

  410. and the

  411. shore

  412. reached

  413. in safety.

  414. The next

  415. day my

  416. kind

  417. guide

  418. said

  419. would you

  420. like to

  421. see the

  422. way by

  423. which you

  424. came last

  425. night

  426. and then he

  427. showed me

  428. where our

  429. vessel had

  430. been lying

  431. and the

  432. very

  433. very

  434. narrow

  435. plank

  436. by which

  437. we had

  438. reached

  439. the shore

  440. he knew

  441. that I

  442. had turned

  443. either

  444. he knew

  445. that had

  446. I turned

  447. either to

  448. the right

  449. or to

  450. the left

  451. I should

  452. in all

  453. probability

  454. have lost

  455. my balance

  456. and gone

  457. over into

  458. those dark

  459. waters

  460. but by

  461. holding fast

  462. and treading

  463. just where

  464. the light

  465. fell

  466. all danger

  467. would be

  468. averted.

  469. Jesus

  470. front and

  471. centre

  472. as the

  473. light of

  474. the world

  475. he is the

  476. one

  477. that we are

  478. called to

  479. focus our

  480. hope on

  481. he is the

  482. one

  483. to set

  484. as the

  485. central

  486. image

  487. of hope

  488. in our

  489. hearts

  490. and in

  491. our

  492. minds

  493. and his

  494. promise is

  495. that when

  496. we do

  497. that

  498. there may

  499. still be

  500. fears lurking

  501. there may

  502. still be

  503. things that

  504. we know

  505. are out

  506. there as

  507. possibilities

  508. but his

  509. light of

  510. hope

  511. burns

  512. through the

  513. fog and

  514. the darkness

  515. and enables

  516. us

  517. to walk

  518. let's

  519. pray

  520. Lord

  521. thank you

  522. that you

  523. don't just

  524. leave us

  525. in this

  526. world

  527. and expect

  528. us to

  529. get on

  530. with it

  531. but you

  532. come to

  533. us in

  534. Jesus

  535. as the

  536. light of

  537. the world

  538. to lighten

  539. our darkness

  540. and to give

  541. us that

  542. direction

  543. to give

  544. us that

  545. focus

  546. Lord

  547. would you

  548. be

  549. front and

  550. centre

  551. in our

  552. vision

  553. Lord

  554. help us

  555. to live

  556. in a

  557. way

  558. that is

  559. truly

  560. ready

  561. ready to

  562. meet with

  563. you in

  564. our daily

  565. lives

  566. may we

  567. live in a

  568. way that

  569. is truly

  570. expectant

  571. living in

  572. the light

  573. of your

  574. promises

  575. the light

  576. of that

  577. future

  578. that will

  579. be so

  580. amazing

  581. Lord

  582. may that

  583. picture

  584. of that

  585. future

  586. be at

  587. the centre

  588. of our

  589. minds

  590. in our

  591. everyday

  592. thinking

  593. that we

  594. might navigate

  595. our way

  596. forwards

  597. knowing

  598. that that

  599. future

  600. is in

  601. you

  602. so be

  603. at the

  604. centre

  605. of our

  606. lives

  607. be at

  608. the centre

  609. of our

  610. thinking

  611. be at the

  612. centre

  613. of our

  614. being

  615. this

  616. day

  617. and in

  618. whatever

  619. lies ahead

  620. over these

  621. coming

  622. days

  623. in

  624. Jesus

  625. name

  626. we

  627. pray

  628. amen

  629. amen

  630. to

  631. to

  632. do

  633. ert

  634. away
