  1. So with that, we want to bless James.

  2. We're going to pray for him.

  3. We're grateful for him.

  4. I know he's only had less than 24 hours

  5. since his last sermon here.

  6. He flew out to the Philippines

  7. with a family on Sunday afternoon.

  8. They got back last night.

  9. So yeah, God's sustaining him.

  10. We're going to pray for him

  11. that he can sustain us,

  12. speak the word and teach the word

  13. in the next 45 minutes.

  14. I want to bless Christina

  15. and the kids who are helping Vincent, Danny.

  16. Who else is at the back?

  17. Alex as well.

  18. Okay, we're going to pray and bless.

  19. So let's reach out a hand for the kids

  20. at the back or for James.

  21. Father God, we thank you.

  22. We thank you for our brother.

  23. We thank you for this brother.

  24. We thank you for the gift of teaching

  25. and this heart of obedience for you.

  26. We know you love him very much.

  27. We know you've called us

  28. and every one of us here this morning

  29. to hear your word.

  30. Lord, I pray that the gospel

  31. will be preached in every single room

  32. from the back to the front.

  33. The gospel that sets us free,

  34. the gospel that is truth,

  35. the gospel that will stand forever

  36. and must above and amidst

  37. every storm and every thunderstorm

  38. and black rain.

  39. And Lord, we pray for James.

  40. We pray that the best, best, best sermon

  41. he'll ever, ever preach

  42. will always be the life that he lives.

  43. We thank you, Lord, for his heart.

  44. We thank you for the message

  45. that he's prepared for us

  46. from Revelation 2.

  47. Lord, humble our hearts

  48. as we open up our spiritual ears

  49. to hear what you are saying to us.

  50. So speak to us today, Lord.

  51. We welcome you, Holy Spirit.

  52. In Jesus' name we pray.

  53. Amen.

  54. Before that, Aaron,

  55. we're going to read the passage today,

  56. Revelations 2, 1 to 7.

  57. Let's all stand to read the word together.

  58. Amen.

  59. Amen.

  60. Amen.

  61. Amen.

  62. Amen.

  63. Revelation 2, verses 1 to 7.

    Revelation 2:1–7

  64. To the angel of the church in Ephesus write,

  65. These are the words of him

  66. who holds the seven stars in his right hand

  67. and walks among the seven golden lampstands.

  68. I know your deeds,

  69. your hard work,

  70. and your perseverance.

  71. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked men,

  72. that you have tested those

  73. who claim to be apostles but are not,

  74. and have found them false.

  75. You have persevered

  76. and have endured hardships for my name.

  77. And have not grown weary.

  78. Yet I hold this against you.

  79. You have forsaken your first love.

  80. Remember the height from which you have fallen.

  81. Repent and do the things you did at first.

  82. If you do not repent,

  83. I will come to you

  84. and remove your lampstand from its place.

  85. But you have this in your favor.

  86. You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans,

  87. which I also hate.

  88. He who has an ear,

  89. let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

  90. To him who overcomes,

  91. I will give the right to eat from the tree of life,

  92. which is in the paradise of God.

  93. This is the word of God.

  94. Praise be to God.

  95. Thank you, Aaron.

  96. Thank you.

  97. Please take a seat.

  98. Thank you, Kelly and Kuban and the team.

  99. Thank you, Aaron.

  100. Thank you, Joe.

  101. Joe has a few more years of these hair jokes

  102. before he comes to join me.

  103. And that's going to be a good day for me.

  104. That's going to be a good day.

  105. Come.

  106. I am your future.

  107. Okay, so...

  108. It's going to be breezy.

  109. It's going to be breezy.

  110. We were on a flight yesterday

  111. coming back with the Young Life team

  112. and one of my staff,

  113. immature staff,

  114. was sat behind me

  115. and he was like blowing on my head.

  116. Just to be funny.

  117. But I mean,

  118. I'm used to just having it here.

  119. Like, hair always just on my head

  120. so I didn't really think Aaron was saying, right?

  121. He's like, oh,

  122. I didn't think it was the thing.

  123. But anyway,

  124. he found it very humorous.

  125. So anyway,

  126. there we go.

  127. Hey, good to see you all.

  128. Good to see you all.

  129. Week two.

  130. We're trying to figure things out.

  131. I told you last week,

  132. we were like,

  133. hey,

  134. we don't know what's happening here

  135. but we're going to take one step at a time.

  136. The TV wasn't tall enough

  137. so praise God

  138. we managed to get a TV

  139. that's a little bit taller.

  140. I don't know how that was for visual at the back.

  141. Sadly, I am still the same height.

  142. And as I said last week,

  143. they've told me standing and sitting,

  144. it doesn't matter.

  145. It's the same.

  146. So I'm just going to sit here

  147. and hopefully you'll be able to hear

  148. what I have to say.

  149. We went through the book of Revelation

  150. where we started the book of Revelation

  151. and there's only one revelation.

  152. It's not revelations.

  153. There's only one.

  154. And what was that?

  155. That was the revelation of Jesus Christ.

  156. John was praying.

  157. This is old man John.

  158. This is the John

  159. whom was leaning on Jesus' shoulder

  160. at the Last Supper,

  161. the one who was dearly loved.

  162. And he's praying many years later.

  163. He's on the island of Patmos

  164. because he's been sent there

  165. because he refused to worship Caesar.

  166. And he's praying.

  167. And persecution is happening.

  168. That's what I was talking about

  169. last week, right?

  170. The church is experiencing

  171. all the persecution.

  172. And he's just praying to God.

  173. He's in the spirit.

  174. He's going,

  175. God, can you help my brothers and sisters?

  176. Can you look after the churches?

  177. And Jesus' response isn't,

  178. hey, I'm going to come and help you.

  179. I'm going to overthrow the Roman Empire.

  180. Don't worry.

  181. The enemy is gone.

  182. He doesn't do that.

  183. Jesus says, you know what?

  184. You know what's going to help you?

  185. I'm going to peel back the curtain.

  186. I want to show you who I am.

  187. Because when I show you who I am,

  188. when I show you the end,

  189. you're going to feel better about the now.

  190. And so I talked about Jesus

  191. being the beginning and the end,

  192. the Alpha and Omega,

  193. the first and the last.

  194. And he says, hey, I was dead,

  195. but now I'm alive forevermore.

  196. I hold the keys.

  197. And this is what I look like.

  198. And he had the white hair.

  199. He had the fire in his eyes.

  200. He had the sword out of his mouth.

  201. When he spoke,

  202. it was like,

  203. what was the word?

  204. When he spoke,

  205. it was like the roar of many waters.

  206. And then a few days later,

  207. we got to experience the roar of many waters.

  208. We got to see on Instagram

  209. or maybe just near our own homes

  210. the sheer force of water.

  211. When you're surrounded by water.

  212. And Jesus is almost saying here,

  213. when I speak,

  214. it drowns out all the empty rhetoric,

  215. all the lies,

  216. all the distractions.

  217. When I speak,

  218. no one else can stand.

  219. And you saw the force of that this week.

  220. And so then he carries on.

  221. And then he actually then starts

  222. to talk to the church.

  223. This is why we're doing this.

  224. Because as we start this,

  225. the title of our series is,

  226. we start with the end in mind.

  227. Because I'm that kind of person.

  228. If it's not worth going,

  229. if it's not worth continuing and sustaining,

  230. let's not start it.

  231. But if we're going to start it,

  232. let's see what Jesus says about it at the end.

  233. Because these are some of the few words

  234. that Jesus actually directly addresses the church

  235. and say,

  236. hey,

  237. I want you to know about this.

  238. I don't know about you,

  239. but I want to know.

  240. As we do church,

  241. I want to know whether this is a kind of church

  242. that Jesus is actually pleased with.

  243. Because if it's not,

  244. then it doesn't matter.

  245. Before we even came here,

  246. the prayer for me was,

  247. God, what do we do?

  248. What should we talk about?

  249. What should we learn?

  250. And he just says,

  251. bring them to me.

  252. Not the space,

  253. not the destination.

  254. Bring them to me.

  255. That's the goal of church.

  256. I don't know why you gather here today,

  257. whether it's because the parents dragged you here,

  258. or whether it's just part of the routine,

  259. or because it's rainy,

  260. so you can't go and have the fun

  261. that you were going to have,

  262. whatever it is.

  263. I hope you're here,

  264. because for the one reason

  265. why we all should be here,

  266. for Jesus.

  267. Jesus says,

  268. bring them to me.

  269. Are you here to meet the Lord?

  270. And he introduced himself last week.

  271. He peeled back the curtain.

  272. This week,

  273. he actually speaks to us.

  274. He speaks to John and says,

  275. I want you to pass a message

  276. to my church.

  277. And this one

  278. sends chills down my spine.

  279. It's probably,

  280. my guess is probably

  281. the second most famous one.

  282. The one towards the end

  283. is pretty famous too.

  284. But this one is interesting,

  285. and I wanted to talk to you

  286. a little bit about this one.

  287. Now,

  288. he starts off by saying,

  289. actually,

  290. so just before chapter two,

  291. at the end of chapter one,

  292. as for the mystery of the seven stars

  293. that you saw in my right hand

  294. and the seven golden lampstands,

  295. the seven stars are the angels

  296. of the seven churches,

  297. and the seven lampstands

  298. are the seven churches.

  299. Now,

  300. of course,

  301. there weren't just seven churches in Asia.

  302. There were more.

  303. But maybe this represents

  304. seven being the complete number.

  305. Maybe it just represents

  306. the complete church.

  307. And actually,

  308. as you see,

  309. as we go through these seven weeks

  310. and these seven different churches,

  311. what you see is

  312. the problems that these churches face

  313. are exactly the problems

  314. that we face now.

  315. They're the same.

  316. In fact,

  317. you can say that

  318. we are experiencing them

  319. to such a degree now

  320. that we need to learn

  321. and we need to take heed

  322. of these words

  323. because if not,

  324. the consequences can be dire.

  325. And we can see it here

  326. as Jesus is talking

  327. to the church in Ephesus.

  328. So let's talk a little bit

  329. about the church in Ephesus first.

  330. He says,

  331. so the angel of the church

  332. in Ephesus writes.

  333. So he's saying,

  334. angel of the church,

  335. pass this message to my church.

  336. And he's passing it

  337. to the church in Ephesus.

  338. Now,

  339. the reason why Ephesus is first

  340. is from the island of Patmos.

  341. He writes this letter.

  342. John receives his vision

  343. and starts writing.

  344. And then as he sends

  345. the messenger,

  346. this is the first island.

  347. This is the first place

  348. he goes to.

  349. It's just on the route.

  350. This is the first one.

  351. But it's more significant

  352. than that because Ephesus

  353. was a big deal.

  354. Ephesus was a metropolitan.

  355. Actually,

  356. I wouldn't go,

  357. I wouldn't even hesitate

  358. to say it's maybe

  359. the equivalent

  360. of something like Hong Kong.

  361. The fourth city

  362. in the whole of the Roman Empire,

  363. you had,

  364. of course,

  365. you had Rome,

  366. you had Alexandria,

  367. you had Antioch

  368. where the disciples

  369. first were dispersed

  370. and then you have Ephesus.

  371. It was the financial capital

  372. because everyone

  373. would come in

  374. from all the different places

  375. to deal,

  376. to trade.

  377. So all different kinds

  378. of people were there.

  379. It was also a political capital.

  380. Now,

  381. the official one

  382. was Pergamum,

  383. but actually the Roman

  384. governor himself

  385. lived in Ephesus.

  386. And so you see

  387. all these people

  388. are centering

  389. onto this city.

  390. First of all,

  391. this gives me encouragement

  392. because actually,

  393. discipling,

  394. doing church,

  395. doing missions work

  396. in a city

  397. is not easy.

  398. It's not easy

  399. because the city

  400. is just filled

  401. with distractions,

  402. filled with all these things

  403. that make it hard

  404. to make disciples.

  405. But yet you see here,

  406. the book of Revelation

  407. is almost just

  408. a down-to-earth manual

  409. on how to disciple,

  410. how to be an urban disciple.

  411. It was also a religious capital

  412. because the goddess

  413. that was maybe

  414. the most prominent there

  415. was the goddess

  416. of Artemis,

  417. the fertility goddess.

  418. The Greeks

  419. would call her Diana.

  420. Diana.

  421. So you know

  422. the sexuality,

  423. the fertility,

  424. the lust

  425. that was all going on there.

  426. And actually,

  427. that ties into

  428. a little bit of

  429. why this church

  430. in Ephesus

  431. was really struggling

  432. because it was actually

  433. calling people away

  434. from all those things.

  435. So this is a capital,

  436. and actually,

  437. this was a church

  438. that was very dear

  439. to Paul's heart.

  440. He'd visited it once

  441. and then he went back

  442. and he stayed

  443. two and a half years there.

  444. And what happened

  445. after that,

  446. he passed it to a couple

  447. called Priscilla and Aquila

  448. and they looked after it

  449. for a while

  450. and then his mentee,

  451. Timothy,

  452. looked after the church there.

  453. And then,

  454. of course,

  455. towards the end

  456. of the first century,

  457. Timothy was murdered.

  458. After that,

  459. John,

  460. young,

  461. beloved John,

  462. goes back

  463. and actually

  464. pastors the church

  465. there in his final years.

  466. So this is a very

  467. important church.

  468. What's even more important

  469. is Mary herself,

  470. Jesus' mother,

  471. actually went to this church.

  472. So can you imagine

  473. being the preacher

  474. at this church

  475. and you're staring

  476. and Mary is there.

  477. And she's like,

  478. you know Jesus?

  479. And she's like,

  480. oh,

  481. I know Jesus.

  482. I know Jesus.

  483. Do you know Jesus?

  484. So,

  485. the church of Ephesus

  486. had some pretty

  487. crazy senior pastors.

  488. And yet,

  489. Jesus has some

  490. pretty damning words

  491. for them.

  492. And these words

  493. actually terrify me

  494. because as you look

  495. at this,

  496. now put your Chinese hat on

  497. and look

  498. and just rank

  499. how this church

  500. is doing.

  501. What you think

  502. is a good church

  503. and you see it

  504. and you see

  505. every single part here.

  506. And yet,

  507. Jesus is still

  508. threatening

  509. to close it down.

  510. That should scare you.

  511. That definitely scares me.

  512. So let's just

  513. quickly go through it.

  514. I know your works.

  515. Toil.

  516. I know your toil

  517. and I know your patient endurance.

  518. He says,

  519. I know your works.

  520. I know that you guys

  521. run so many programs.

  522. You guys do such a good job

  523. with church.

  524. You have your kids programs.

  525. You have your youth programs.

  526. You have your social service programs.

  527. You have all the programs.

  528. I know your works.

  529. You are doing good stuff.

  530. James says,

  531. faith without works is dead

  532. but you've got the works.

  533. And he says,

  534. I know.

  535. It's interesting here.

  536. At the beginning,

  537. the words of him,

  538. chapter 2,

  539. verse 1,

  540. you can follow me

  541. or if you're taking notes,

  542. write these down.

  543. Who holds the seven stars

  544. in his right hand

  545. who walks among

  546. the seven golden lampstands.

  547. Jesus is saying,

  548. I know

  549. because I'm walking

  550. right amongst you.

  551. I am in your church.

  552. I am sat right there.

  553. I am right there.

  554. It ties back

  555. to what I was thinking.

  556. Actually,

  557. when Jesus says,

  558. bring them to me,

  559. when we,

  560. well,

  561. sorry,

  562. when I felt the Lord

  563. tell me that this is

  564. what we should be doing.

  565. We should be going

  566. to him together.

  567. I reckon

  568. many of us

  569. and sometimes myself,

  570. I don't turn up

  571. to church for Jesus.

  572. I'm not really acutely aware

  573. that he's actually there.

  574. Sometimes

  575. I feel as though

  576. when I'm sat in a church service,

  577. maybe it feels more

  578. like a memorial service

  579. than an actual service

  580. where Jesus is alive

  581. and actually there.

  582. Do you know what I mean?

  583. Has anyone been to

  584. a memorial service

  585. or a funeral?

  586. The way we talk

  587. about that person,

  588. we speak fondly of them,

  589. whether it's true or not

  590. doesn't matter

  591. because he's gone now.

  592. So we say,

  593. oh,

  594. that was such a nice person.

  595. And we talk about him,

  596. we sing songs,

  597. encourage each other.

  598. Aren't you scared

  599. that that's how we treat

  600. these services?

  601. Jesus says,

  602. I'm alive

  603. and I walk among

  604. the church.

  605. I am here.

  606. It's not a memorial service.

  607. If that doesn't kind of

  608. straighten your back,

  609. I don't know what will.

  610. But the Lord is here

  611. right now.

  612. And he says,

  613. I am here

  614. and I know your works.

  615. I'm sitting through

  616. your announcements

  617. about the prison ministry

  618. and I know

  619. that you have a good heart,

  620. that you are doing

  621. good things here.

  622. I know that.

  623. I know your toil.

  624. I know it's hard work.

  625. I know discipling

  626. in an urban city

  627. is hard.

  628. I know trying

  629. to earn money

  630. and still run a business

  631. but still be upright

  632. and still be righteous

  633. is not easy.

  634. I know it's hard.

  635. I know that you are

  636. causing such a stir

  637. that people are starting

  638. to persecute you,

  639. that you're starting

  640. to be afraid of your life.

  641. I know.

  642. I know your patient endurance.

  643. I know your resilience

  644. in all of this.

  645. Can you imagine

  646. this group of people

  647. as he starts to draw

  648. this picture

  649. of what this group

  650. were like?

  651. These people were

  652. just committed

  653. committed to works,

  654. committed to running things,

  655. doing things.

  656. These are good Christians.

  657. So we say,

  658. I know your toil.

  659. I know that you are

  660. pushing through.

  661. It's much easier

  662. to do other stuff

  663. but you are here

  664. and you are patiently enduring.

  665. I know all that.

  666. Even more so,

  667. I know how you can't bear

  668. with those who are evil

  669. but test those

  670. who call themselves apostles

  671. and are not

  672. and found them to be false.

  673. Not only are you good

  674. at your works,

  675. not only are you hardworking

  676. and you're resilient,

  677. you also know the truth.

  678. You are committed

  679. to the truth.

  680. That means not only

  681. do you have

  682. great outreach programs,

  683. you have great discipleship

  684. going on as well.

  685. You have a good BSF group

  686. where you know scripture,

  687. where you know doctrine

  688. to the point where

  689. you are so weary

  690. of the people outside

  691. teaching false doctrine,

  692. you have the systems in place

  693. where you test

  694. and that's incredible

  695. and that's good.

  696. You are so committed

  697. to the truth

  698. and then he says,

  699. I know that you are

  700. enduring patiently,

  701. how you are bearing up

  702. for my namesake

  703. and you have not

  704. grown weary.

  705. Man, I would love

  706. to hear Jesus say that to me.

  707. James, I know everything

  708. that you're doing

  709. and I know how

  710. you have not grown tired.

  711. You've just kept going.

  712. Isn't that a great compliment

  713. that you would receive

  714. from your Lord?

  715. You've just been,

  716. you're such a hard worker.

  717. I mean, that definitely

  718. appeals to the Chinese culture.

  719. You have not grown weary.

  720. You're so good

  721. at doing what you're doing.

  722. And so this church,

  723. in my eyes,

  724. is really doing everything.

  725. It's doing it,

  726. it's an A-star church.

  727. It's doing everything

  728. it should.

  729. It's loving,

  730. it's reaching,

  731. it's defending,

  732. it's serving,

  733. it's doing everything

  734. that the church

  735. really should be doing.

  736. It's what we should be doing.

  737. But,

  738. and this is a huge but,

  739. but I have this

  740. against you.

  741. You have abandoned

  742. your first love.

  743. Abandoned.

  744. So you may be

  745. an A-star pupil,

  746. but you've forgotten

  747. what course you were studying.

  748. You may be getting

  749. the best grades

  750. and doing everything

  751. that you need to do,

  752. but actually you've missed

  753. the point completely.

  754. You've abandoned

  755. your first love.

  756. And this word is strong.

  757. I mean,

  758. the one that Aaron read

  759. I think was forsaken.

  760. Not only have you

  761. just forgotten it,

  762. you've deliberately

  763. left it behind.

  764. You've been so caught up

  765. in doctrine

  766. that you've left

  767. the main point

  768. of all of it.

  769. You've been so caught up

  770. in looking out

  771. and serving,

  772. you've lost sight of me.

  773. You've abandoned

  774. your first love.

  775. We know that's possible

  776. because we know churches,

  777. we know we are susceptible

  778. to abandoning

  779. our first love.

  780. Why do we know that?

  781. We know that we can

  782. abandon first love

  783. in our marriages.

  784. If you're a married couple,

  785. look over at each other

  786. right now

  787. and go,

  788. do you remember

  789. when you first fell in love

  790. with your spouse?

  791. Those of you who are dating,

  792. wearing matching T-shirts.

  793. Cute.

  794. We used to wear

  795. matching T-shirts too.

  796. Then I got big.

  797. I couldn't fit them anymore.

  798. Okay,

  799. are my children here?

  800. My children are not here.

  801. So Christina and I,

  802. I was 12

  803. and she was 13.

  804. Yeah,

  805. it was bad.

  806. It was bad.

  807. It's not good.

  808. I could see the judging eyes

  809. from the parents already.

  810. More emphatically,

  811. I was in Sunday school

  812. and she was in youth group.

  813. And I remember

  814. I was out in my Sunday school class

  815. and I was just leaning back

  816. because I'm cool

  817. and I know all the Bible study

  818. and then the youth group kids

  819. walk past

  820. and I'm just like,

  821. what's up?

  822. What's up?

  823. And this tiny little girl,

  824. Christina,

  825. was like,

  826. I'll see you.

  827. I need to finish my coloring here

  828. and then I'll come over.

  829. Oh dear.

  830. Do you remember the butterflies?

  831. Come on,

  832. who's been married here

  833. for more than 10 years?

  834. Come on,

  835. put your hand up.

  836. More than 10 years,

  837. more than 20.

  838. We are getting exposed

  839. to more than 30,

  840. 40.

  841. Wow.

  842. Do you remember

  843. like,

  844. Agnes,

  845. do you remember

  846. butterflies for Vincent?

  847. Was that a thing?

  848. Agnes is like,

  849. no,

  850. I do not remember that at all.

  851. Do you remember the butterflies?

  852. We were,

  853. we started dating

  854. when it was like

  855. you had to drag

  856. the dial-up cable

  857. to connect to the internet

  858. and then

  859. you dial up

  860. and then you send an email

  861. or you write texts

  862. but the texts

  863. were only 160 characters,

  864. kind of like Twitter.

  865. but then

  866. because they cost money

  867. each text

  868. so Christina

  869. wouldn't use spaces.

  870. She would just like,

  871. she would differentiate

  872. each word

  873. with a capital letter

  874. so it was so hard to read

  875. and of course

  876. every word is shortened

  877. as well

  878. so as I'm reading

  879. I'm like,

  880. oh,

  881. but I've got butterflies.

  882. Oh,

  883. you write so well,

  884. baby.

  885. TTYL,

  886. BRB.

  887. Oh dear,

  888. the butterflies

  889. and then she'd call

  890. and I was like,

  891. oh,

  892. that's so cute

  893. and then of course

  894. we did have a few years

  895. in the middle

  896. where we were not dating

  897. and then we started dating

  898. and back again

  899. in university

  900. and even then

  901. it was kind of like,

  902. where are you going?

  903. Oh,

  904. let me walk you.

  905. Oh,

  906. but you're really far away.

  907. That's like an hour bus ride

  908. to come hang out with me

  909. just to walk me to.

  910. I'm like,

  911. it's okay,

  912. I'll do it for you.

  913. Like that Adele song,

  914. make you feel my love.

  915. I'm going to do anything

  916. I need to do

  917. to be for you

  918. and now she's like,

  919. hey,

  920. can you go and get me

  921. some milk?

  922. I'm like,

  923. Rebecca's like,

  924. oh,

  925. Aaron,

  926. we need to talk.

  927. The things you do,

  928. like,

  929. you hang up.

  930. No,

  931. you hang up.

  932. Good night.

  933. I love you.

  934. I love you more.

  935. I love you more.

  936. I love you infinity.

  937. All those things.

  938. What was I talking about?

  939. I would say,

  940. side note,

  941. as I was preparing this

  942. and praying over this,

  943. I was like,

  944. man,

  945. maybe there should be

  946. just a word for married couples here.

  947. Just for a second.

  948. It's not exactly what Jesus

  949. was talking about,

  950. but it really does remind me.

  951. It's talking about that.

  952. Hey,

  953. if you've been married

  954. for a long time,

  955. you've been dating

  956. for a long time,

  957. look at your spouse

  958. in like,

  959. a loving,

  960. mildly sexy kind of way.

  961. Like,

  962. take them out for a date.

  963. Like,

  964. don't,

  965. don't take it for granted

  966. because I know

  967. that the church can do this

  968. because I know

  969. that marriages do this.

  970. And before you know it,

  971. you're like,

  972. you're just co-partners in life.

  973. You've forgotten

  974. why you loved that person

  975. in the first place.

  976. You're like,

  977. oh man,

  978. now you're just annoying.

  979. Like,

  980. my kids were saying,

  981. oh,

  982. what were you like

  983. when we started dating you?

  984. This was 18,

  985. of course.

  986. We did not tell them

  987. about the prequel.

  988. Well,

  989. I was still playing

  990. a lot of sports

  991. in the university's team,

  992. so I was going to the gym

  993. all the time with my friends.

  994. I looked a little bit like Uday.

  995. Had just about as much hair

  996. as Uday did.

  997. And then she started dating me

  998. and then we got married

  999. and then it was a bait and switch.

  1000. Now,

  1001. no working out

  1002. and no hair.

  1003. So Christina was like,

  1004. yeah,

  1005. that's the person

1006. that I fell in love with.

1007. But somewhere along the line

  1008. as married couples,

1009. you kind of just drift off.

1010. You just kind of just

1011. take each other for granted.

  1012. You don't date.

1013. We were just with a couple

  1014. who had been married

  1015. for 40 years

  1016. and they were like,

  1017. no,

  1018. that's the one thing

  1019. we kept on to,

  1020. just dating.

  1021. Every week,

  1022. just spending time together.

  1023. Just whether,

1024. through whatever season it was,

1025. we spent that day together,

  1026. we go out

1027. and we just spend that time.

  1028. Talk to each other.

  1029. Talk to each other

1030. like we talk to other people.

1031. That's how bad it gets.

  1032. Sometimes,

  1033. right?

  1034. Because with the people

1035. that we are so comfortable with,

  1036. we don't bother talking

  1037. to them anymore.

  1038. We know.

1039. We've been around for so long.

1040. We've been together for so long.

  1041. But to other people,

  1042. we're asking questions.

  1043. We're intrigued

  1044. in their lives

  1045. and making sure

  1046. that we do that.

  1047. So those images,

  1048. those memories

  1049. of first love

  1050. is what Jesus

  1051. is talking about here.

  1052. He's saying,

  1053. you have abandoned

  1054. your first love.

1055. You have left it behind.

  1056. You've forgotten

  1057. why this gathering

  1058. is happening

  1059. in the first place.

  1060. You've abandoned

  1061. your first love.

  1062. You see,

1063. he's writing to the church

  1064. in Ephesus.

1065. So if we actually go

1066. to the book of Ephesians,

1067. Paul actually talks about this.

1068. If you go to Ephesians chapter 1,

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

1069. so now it's not John

  1070. or Jesus talking

1071. to the church in Ephesus,

  1072. it's Paul.

  1073. Okay?

1074. So this is a few years before.

  1075. And Paul's saying,

  1076. chapter 1, verse 15,

  1077. for this reason,

  1078. because I've heard

  1079. of your faith

  1080. in the Lord Jesus

  1081. and your love

  1082. toward all the saints.

1083. This was a church of love

  1084. at the beginning.

  1085. The founding fathers

1086. of the church of Ephesus

  1087. had love

  1088. and so much

  1089. that Paul had heard

  1090. about the love

  1091. that they had

  1092. for each other.

  1093. Isn't that incredible?

  1094. That this church

  1095. was known,

  1096. was heard,

  1097. had a reputation

  1098. of love,

1099. but many years later now,

  1100. Jesus says,

  1101. but you have abandoned

  1102. that first love.

1103. So maybe the first generation,

  1104. the founding fathers,

  1105. loved the people

1106. that were in their church.

1107. But as the second generation came,

1108. as the third generation came,

  1109. it completely dwindles.

1110. And what started off with love

  1111. now ends up being

  1112. just a program.

  1113. What started off

  1114. with compassion

1115. and faith in the Lord

  1116. is now just routine.

1117. And Jesus comes and says,

  1118. hey,

  1119. you have abandoned

  1120. your first love.

1121. I have this against you.

  1122. You see,

  1123. we all forget.

  1124. We all forget.

1125. We all lose our way.

  1126. And I think Jesus

  1127. writes this

  1128. as the first letter

  1129. to all the churches

  1130. because I think

1131. this is the biggest thing.

1132. This is the most important thing.

1133. And then he gives us

  1134. some solutions

1135. as to what he needs

  1136. to do about it.

  1137. Now,

  1138. each time he writes

  1139. a letter to a church,

  1140. he comes out with

  1141. what he knows.

  1142. I'm walking among you.

1143. I know this is what you are.

  1144. I know,

  1145. I know,

  1146. I'm not a distant God

  1147. just dropping down bombs.

  1148. I know because

  1149. I'm walking amongst you.

  1150. I know you've got good stuff.

  1151. But then it's got,

1152. you've got some bad stuff.

1153. And now I want to tell you

  1154. how to overcome it.

  1155. So here he says,

  1156. hey,

  1157. you've abandoned

  1158. your love at first.

  1159. And then verse 5,

  1160. chapter 2,

  1161. verse 5,

  1162. revelation.

  1163. Remember,

  1164. therefore,

1165. from where you have fallen,

  1166. repent

  1167. and do the works

  1168. you did at first.

  1169. First of all,

  1170. remember.

  1171. So whether this is

  1172. your marriage or not,

  1173. but for church,

1174. we definitely need to do this

1175. is we need to remember

  1176. every week

  1177. why we gather here.

  1178. We need to remember

  1179. what it is for.

1180. And the reason what it is for

  1181. is for love.

  1182. It says,

  1183. remember from where

  1184. you have fallen.

  1185. So it's saying,

  1186. hey,

  1187. remember

  1188. what you were like

  1189. at the beginning.

  1190. Those of us

  1191. who have been Christians

  1192. for a long time,

  1193. I think Albert

1194. won the prize last week.

  1195. Do you remember

  1196. that first moment

  1197. you fell in love

  1198. of Jesus?

  1199. Do you remember

  1200. that first moment

  1201. where he peeled back

  1202. the curtains to you?

  1203. Do you?

  1204. It seems to me

  1205. that we need to

  1206. actively

  1207. make sure

  1208. we remember.

  1209. Remember

  1210. from where

  1211. you have fallen.

  1212. Remember where

  1213. you came from.

  1214. The love

  1215. that you had.

  1216. Because just like

  1217. marriages,

  1218. just like friendships,

  1219. it's so easy

  1220. to forget.

1221. And before you know it,

  1222. you forgot why

  1223. you're here.

  1224. You're just doing life,

  1225. following the routine,

  1226. and there's no love.

  1227. Remember

  1228. from where

  1229. you have fallen.

  1230. Actually,

1231. in the book of Ephesians,

1232. Paul talks about this too.

  1233. So he says,

  1234. hey,

1235. I've heard about your love

  1236. to all the saints.

  1237. Chapter 2,

  1238. and then he says,

  1239. remember

  1240. that you were

  1241. at that time

  1242. separated from Christ,

  1243. alienated from the

  1244. commonwealth of Israel,

  1245. estranged to the

  1246. covenant of promise,

  1247. having no hope,

  1248. and without God

  1249. in the world.

  1250. Hey,

  1251. church in Ephesus,

  1252. remember that you

1253. were once like this too,

1254. that you were once lost.

1255. And you have to keep

  1256. that front and center

  1257. because somewhere

  1258. along the line,

  1259. you get married

  1260. to the church,

  1261. you start doing

  1262. Jesus stuff,

  1263. you start doing

  1264. Bible studies,

  1265. you start doing

  1266. BSF,

  1267. you start doing

  1268. all these things,

  1269. and you forget

  1270. that actually

  1271. the original reason

  1272. why you came

  1273. in the first place.

  1274. so he says,

  1275. remember.

  1276. Whatever you need

  1277. to do to remember,

  1278. you need to remember

  1279. from where you

  1280. have fallen.

  1281. Because the more

  1282. you do church,

  1283. the more you forget

  1284. what it was like

  1285. to have no hope.

  1286. The more you forget

  1287. what it's like,

  1288. actually,

1289. to not have a God

  1290. that you trust

  1291. despite anything

  1292. and everything.

  1293. do you know

  1294. what happens then?

  1295. When you forget

  1296. what it's like

  1297. to have no God,

  1298. you then start

  1299. becoming judgmental

  1300. to people.

  1301. When you forget

  1302. that you were

  1303. once drowning,

  1304. then you start

  1305. looking at people

  1306. who are drowning

  1307. and go,

  1308. I'm way better

  1309. than them.

  1310. They're so stupid.

1311. Why would you do that?

  1312. That's such a stupid

  1313. life decision

  1314. until we remember

  1315. that,

  1316. oh,

  1317. I was there.

  1318. I literally did

  1319. just that.

  1320. Remember

  1321. from where you

  1322. have fallen.

  1323. And then he says

  1324. repent.

  1325. Repent.

  1326. Literally do a 180

  1327. and turn.

  1328. Do a 180

  1329. right now

  1330. before it's too late.

  1331. Repent

  1332. and start doing

  1333. the things

  1334. that you did

  1335. at first.

  1336. So for relationships

  1337. as couples,

  1338. start calling

  1339. each other again,

  1340. saying goodnight

  1341. to each other

  1342. just before you sleep.

1343. You don't do that anymore,

  1344. do that again.

  1345. Start praying

  1346. with each other

  1347. like you did

  1348. at the beginning.

  1349. Go out

  1350. and buy

  1351. those matching

  1352. t-shirts again.

  1353. Do whatever

  1354. you need to do.

  1355. Do those works

  1356. that you did

  1357. at first,

  1358. not the works

  1359. that you're doing

  1360. right now

  1361. that you've been

  1362. caught up in.

  1363. Do the ones

  1364. that you did

  1365. at the very beginning.

  1366. If not,

  1367. if not,

  1368. I will come

  1369. and I will remove

  1370. your lampstand

  1371. from its place.

  1372. Can you believe

  1373. that?

  1374. This church

  1375. that is an A-star

  1376. church,

  1377. it has the works,

  1378. it has the resilience,

  1379. it has the toil,

1380. it has the patient endurance,

  1381. it has the commitment

  1382. to the truth.

  1383. Jesus says,

  1384. if you don't

  1385. rediscover

  1386. your first love,

1387. I will shut you down.

  1388. Completely.

  1389. Surely you're like,

  1390. wait,

  1391. well it's a good church,

  1392. it's doing good stuff.

  1393. Maybe the heart

  1394. isn't right,

  1395. maybe the intentions

  1396. were forgotten,

1397. but it's doing good stuff.

  1398. We're teaching people

  1399. good, healthy,

  1400. sound doctrine.

  1401. We are serving

  1402. the poor.

  1403. Surely you still

1404. want to keep us around.

  1405. No,

  1406. he says,

  1407. if you don't have

  1408. love,

  1409. I will remove you

  1410. from your lampstand.

  1411. This tells me

  1412. a couple of things.

  1413. This tells me

  1414. God doesn't really

  1415. need us

  1416. to do anything.

  1417. It's about our heart.

1418. And our work for God

  1419. needs to be driven

1420. by our love for God.

  1421. End of story.

  1422. Our work for God

  1423. has to be driven

1424. by our love for God,

  1425. otherwise he does

  1426. not need us.

  1427. What's the most

  1428. famous chapter

  1429. in the Bible

  1430. about love?

  1431. 1 Corinthians,

  1432. 1 Corinthians 13.

  1433. Read our weddings,

  1434. right?

  1435. Love is patient,

  1436. love is kind,

  1437. all these things.

  1438. Of course,

  1439. at the beginning

  1440. of 1 Corinthians 13,

  1441. he's saying,

  1442. hey,

1443. if you don't have love,

  1444. you can be amazing.

1445. You can be the most

  1446. incredible musician.

  1447. You can be,

  1448. you can know

  1449. all of your scripture.

1450. You can be the best teacher,

1451. but if you don't have love,

  1452. you are 80%

  1453. of your functioning capacity.

  1454. No.

  1455. You are 40%.

  1456. No.

  1457. You are nothing.

  1458. Nothing?

  1459. Like,

  1460. all the good stuff

  1461. that I'm doing

  1462. wiped out,

  1463. nothing?

  1464. That's pretty harsh.

  1465. Until we realize

  1466. why we do

  1467. all that we do.

  1468. When we forget

  1469. love,

  1470. none of it matters.

  1471. It's a loud gong.

1472. And if we don't have it,

1473. he'd rather shut us down.

  1474. That's the thing

1475. that scares me the most

  1476. because that means

  1477. on the outside,

  1478. we can be doing

  1479. everything right.

  1480. Jesus talks about that,

  1481. right?

  1482. You worship me

  1483. with your lips,

  1484. but your hearts

  1485. are far from me.

  1486. Our outside

  1487. may be complete.

1488. You may tick every box

  1489. as a good Christian,

1490. but if you don't have love,

  1491. you better remember

  1492. from where you've fallen,

  1493. and you better

  1494. turn around 180

1495. and go back to doing

  1496. one of the things

1497. that you did at first.

  1498. It's that important.

  1499. If not,

  1500. I will remove you.

1501. But then he does say

  1502. something.

  1503. He says,

  1504. yeah,

  1505. this you have.

  1506. You hate the works

  1507. of the Nicolaitans.

  1508. Nicolaitans were a group

  1509. of people

  1510. who had basically

  1511. made arrangements

  1512. and compromised

  1513. with pagan society

  1514. to saying,

  1515. hey,

  1516. we're the Jesus people.

  1517. We're still

  1518. into all of that,

  1519. but our spiritual liberty

  1520. gives us a liberty

  1521. to do everything else

  1522. as well,

  1523. so we can still

  1524. do all the things

  1525. for pleasure.

  1526. That's that group

  1527. of people.

  1528. They're saying,

  1529. hey,

  1530. yeah,

  1531. I believe in God,

  1532. but I'm still going

  1533. to enjoy everything

  1534. about life here

  1535. on earth as well.

  1536. I believe in heaven,

  1537. but I actually really

  1538. just want all the

  1539. pleasures here.

  1540. That's that group.

  1541. And Jesus says,

  1542. no.

  1543. You know what

  1544. that group did?

  1545. That group started

  1546. flirting with other things.

1547. They had a first love.

  1548. When you first meet

  1549. your girlfriend,

  1550. boyfriend,

  1551. spouse,

1552. you can see nothing else.

  1553. You are just looking

  1554. at them.

1555. There is no other person

  1556. in the room.

  1557. Even if it's a room

  1558. full of people

1559. in the side of your mind,

  1560. you can still see

  1561. that person

  1562. because everything

  1563. is about that person.

1564. But what God's saying here

1565. is what Jesus is saying here.

  1566. But you've taken

  1567. your eyes off me.

  1568. Some people have taken

  1569. their eyes off me

  1570. and they've started flirting

  1571. with other things.

  1572. other people.

  1573. But again,

  1574. you,

  1575. you've stuck to it

1576. but not out of love anymore.

1577. I need you to have

  1578. that love for me.

  1579. I mean,

  1580. the Nicolaitans,

1581. I think we need to heed

  1582. that warning too.

  1583. Jesus hates the Nicolaitans.

  1584. Jesus hates,

  1585. doesn't hate the people

  1586. but hates those

  1587. who have made arrangements,

  1588. made compromises

  1589. to still enjoy

1590. all the things of life

  1591. that don't last.

  1592. They started flirting.

  1593. Actually,

1594. one of the biggest things

  1595. about modern Christianity

  1596. is modernity itself.

  1597. All the traps of,

1598. all the traps of Babylon,

  1599. all the pleasures,

  1600. all the riches,

  1601. all the luxuries,

  1602. all the comforts.

  1603. We must not compromise

  1604. with those

1605. and we must still maintain

1606. to have that first love.

1607. Do we have that first love?

  1608. And then he says,

  1609. and he finishes,

1610. he who has an ear,

1611. let him hear what the Spirit

  1612. says to the churches.

  1613. He's saying,

  1614. the Spirit's constantly

  1615. going to be talking,

  1616. guiding us.

  1617. Let us hear,

  1618. let us take heed

1619. of what is happening here.

1620. And to the one who conquers,

1621. I will grant to eat

1622. of the tree of life

1623. which is in the paradise

  1624. of God.

1625. In the Garden of Eden,

1626. right at the very beginning,

  1627. there were two trees,

  1628. right?

1629. There's the tree of life

  1630. and there's the tree

  1631. of knowledge

  1632. of good and evil.

  1633. Adam and Eve

  1634. make the wrong choice.

  1635. They say,

1636. God, we don't trust you completely.

1637. We don't think you have

1638. what's best in mind for us,

  1639. so we're going to

  1640. choose this tree.

  1641. But he says,

1642. to the one who conquers here,

1643. to the one who keeps

  1644. his mind focused

  1645. on the first love,

  1646. I will grant you

1647. to eat of the tree of life

1648. which is in the paradise

  1649. of God.

1650. To the one who conquers.

  1651. The question is,

  1652. how do you conquer

1653. in this day and age?

  1654. Again,

  1655. it's the same answer.

  1656. It's the only answer.

  1657. Love.

1658. But love is a hard thing

1659. to kind of grasp, right?

1660. We know we should love.

  1661. Actually,

1662. there might be some of you

  1663. thinking,

  1664. you know what,

  1665. I don't think I've ever

  1666. had that first experience

  1667. of love with Jesus.

  1668. What do I do?

  1669. I don't know

1670. if I've ever loved Jesus.

1671. Maybe not even the way

1672. that the church in Ephesus

  1673. did.

1674. Or the way that you,

1675. some people that I see do.

  1676. How do I love?

1677. It's really hard to love.

  1678. I'll tell you,

  1679. you're not alone.

  1680. I have that too.

  1681. Actually,

  1682. my prayer isn't,

  1683. God,

1684. I love you so much.

  1685. God is,

  1686. God,

1687. I want to love you.

1688. And I want to love you

  1689. and only you.

  1690. Help me love you.

1691. Show me what that means.

  1692. Yesterday,

  1693. I was in 1 John

  1694. and I was reminded,

  1695. actually,

  1696. this is love.

1697. If you go to 1 John

    1 John 3 chapter mention

  1698. chapter 3,

  1699. if you're asking yourself,

1700. I want to know this love.

  1701. I don't know if I've abandoned it

  1702. but I don't think

1703. I ever even had it.

  1704. By this,

  1705. 1 John chapter 3,

    1 John 3:16

  1706. verse 16,

1707. by this we know love,

  1708. that he laid down

  1709. his life for us

1710. and we ought to lay down

  1711. our lives

  1712. for the brothers.

  1713. When we're talking

  1714. about love itself,

1715. when we want to love others,

  1716. we must first understand

  1717. that it is because

  1718. God loved us.

  1719. That's how it happens.

1720. It's not the other way around.

  1721. You don't try

  1722. and conjure up love.

  1723. But the moment

  1724. you realize

1725. how much you are loved,

  1726. then it's automatic.

  1727. Then it's the only

  1728. natural response.

  1729. Chapter 4,

  1730. verse 8,

  1731. says this,

1732. anyone who does not love

  1733. does not know God

  1734. because God is love.

  1735. In this love,

1736. in this love of God

1737. was made manifest among us

  1738. that God sent

  1739. his only son

  1740. into the world

  1741. so that we might

  1742. live through him.

  1743. In this is love.

1744. Not that we have loved God,

1745. but that he loved us

  1746. and sent his son

  1747. to be the propitiation

  1748. for our sins.

1749. He paid for the cost

  1750. of our sins.

  1751. Verse 10 again,

  1752. in this is love,

1753. not that we have loved God,

1754. but that he loved us

  1755. and sent his son.

  1756. Do you understand that?

  1757. If you are struggling

  1758. with love,

  1759. that's the point

1760. that you just cling on to.

  1761. Lord,

1762. I want to know your love.

  1763. At the beginning

  1764. of chapter 3,

  1765. it says,

1766. how deep the Father's love.

  1767. That's the song

  1768. that we sing.

  1769. Until we really understand

1770. how much we are loved,

1771. it is going to be

  1772. very hard to love.

  1773. Does that make sense?

1774. So if you're with me

  1775. going,

  1776. oh,

  1777. I don't know.

  1778. I don't know how,

  1779. I don't know whether

  1780. I'm loving God.

  1781. I don't know whether

  1782. I've abandoned.

1783. Just go back to him.

1784. Go back to what he did

  1785. for you.

  1786. How great his love

  1787. is for you.

  1788. That's it.

1789. I think if you were

1790. to sum up this whole book,

  1791. if you say,

  1792. God,

  1793. I have a short

  1794. attention span.

  1795. Can you sum up

  1796. what this whole book

  1797. is about,

  1798. open up the skies

  1799. right now

  1800. and tell me,

1801. just sum this up for me.

  1802. He'll say,

  1803. you are loved.

  1804. You are loved.

  1805. And that's the secret

  1806. to remembering

  1807. that first love

  1808. is that when you

  1809. recognize,

  1810. when you remember

  1811. that you are

  1812. loved,

  1813. I don't know,

  1814. there might be

  1815. some people here

  1816. we actually need

  1817. to repeat that

  1818. to ourselves

  1819. constantly

  1820. because we've never

  1821. truly understood

  1822. what love is.

  1823. Forget the love

  1824. of the Heavenly Father.

  1825. I've not experienced

  1826. the love from

  1827. an earthly father.

  1828. Forget loving

  1829. the saints

  1830. and other people

  1831. in my church.

  1832. I've never experienced

  1833. any love

  1834. myself or my friends.

  1835. The only way

1836. you know how to love

  1837. is if you experience

  1838. love first.

  1839. And that's my prayer.

  1840. That's why we gather.

  1841. It's because we hope

  1842. to have a space,

  1843. a platform

  1844. where we can practice

  1845. that love,

  1846. where we can remind

  1847. each other

  1848. of the love

1849. that God has for us.

  1850. That's why we gather.

  1851. That's why we're here

  1852. because ultimately

1853. Jesus is the tree of life.

1854. So the one who conquers,

  1855. how can you conquer?

  1856. Through love.

  1857. And who did it?

  1858. The one who laid

  1859. his life down.

  1860. First.

  1861. I prayed that,

  1862. I mean,

  1863. I'm not saying

  1864. anything new.

1865. Most of you have heard

1866. this time and time again.

1867. But for most of us,

  1868. it often just sticks

  1869. in our brain

  1870. and never drops

  1871. into our hearts.

  1872. But there's a moment

  1873. in the Christian faith,

1874. in the walk with God,

  1875. where that knowledge

  1876. drops in

  1877. and you suddenly

  1878. feel the love.

  1879. And that's what

  1880. drives you to love.

  1881. Because one thing

  1882. is for sure,

  1883. you can run

  1884. all the programs

  1885. you like

  1886. and it won't

  1887. have any purpose

1888. in the kingdom of God

  1889. unless you have love.

  1890. Some people say,

1891. oh, I do all these things

  1892. because I love people

  1893. and I'll say,

  1894. that's not enough.

  1895. Don't just do stuff

  1896. because you love people.

  1897. Because why?

  1898. At some point,

1899. they're going to annoy you.

  1900. At some point,

1901. they're going to let you down.

1902. And once they let you down,

  1903. you stop loving them.

  1904. You only do it

1905. because of your love for God.

  1906. I'm here doing this.

  1907. Joe's here doing this.

  1908. Christina's here doing this.

  1909. Not necessarily because

  1910. we love you guys,

  1911. which we do,

  1912. but it's because

  1913. we love him first.

1914. My eyes are on him.

1915. And why is my eye on him?

1916. Because he gave his son

  1917. to die for me.

  1918. When you do stuff

1919. out of your love for God,

  1920. then you can never

  1921. be disappointed.

  1922. Because it's not...

  1923. It's not mine anyway.

  1924. The question then becomes,

1925. how much do we love God?

1926. Because when we do love God,

1927. then we do love other people.

1928. 1 John keeps talking about this.

  1929. If you love God,

  1930. you love other people.

  1931. That's the summary

1932. of the whole book, right?

1933. Love God with all your heart,

  1934. soul, mind, and strength.

1935. Love your neighbor as yourself.

1936. The moment you start struggling

  1937. to love your neighbors,

1938. which is what the church

1939. in Ephesus is guilty of,

  1940. it means you've

  1941. stopped loving God.

  1942. And it's a very easy way

  1943. to measure this.

  1944. How quickly do you

  1945. get annoyed at people?

  1946. When someone does something

  1947. that you don't like,

1948. when someone acts in a way

1949. that you don't approve of,

  1950. very quickly,

1951. your heart will show you

  1952. whether you love

  1953. that person or not,

  1954. which then very quickly

  1955. will indicate to you

1956. how your love for God is.

1957. And we should be wise

  1958. to heed the words

  1959. that Jesus says

1960. to the church in Ephesus.

  1961. You have abandoned

  1962. your first love.

1963. But when you love God,

  1964. even when people

  1965. are still figuring

  1966. themselves out,

  1967. even when people

  1968. are still making

  1969. all the dumbest mistakes,

  1970. you still have love

  1971. for them.

  1972. Because you remember

1973. what God did for them,

  1974. because you remember

1975. how much God loves them,

  1976. because you remember

  1977. that you were once

  1978. in that place too,

1979. but you were saved by God.

  1980. And it allows you

  1981. to love that person.

1982. So maybe just a final challenge

  1983. to us.

  1984. Your love for God.

  1985. How would you describe

  1986. it right now?

1987. Is it as bad as what

  1988. the church in Ephesus

  1989. have done?

  1990. They've abandoned it?

  1991. They've so caught up

1992. in doing all the stuff?

  1993. By the way,

  1994. as a church,

  1995. we should still keep

  1996. doing everything that we,

1997. doing the best that we can

  1998. out of love.

1999. But how would you describe

  2000. your love for God?

  2001. How do we,

  2002. as a church,

2003. when someone walks in here

  2004. who is new,

2005. if you are new here

  2006. for the first time,

  2007. my deepest prayer

2008. is not that you come in here

  2009. and go,

2010. oh, this is a really

  2011. cool community.

  2012. This is really cool.

  2013. They've got some

  2014. good kids programs.

  2015. They've got some

  2016. good singers.

2017. My prayer is that you

  2018. would just feel love

  2019. and that you would

  2020. meet Jesus.

  2021. That's the only thing

  2022. because if not,

  2023. this is pointless,

  2024. worthless,

  2025. a loud gong,

  2026. nothing,

  2027. and Jesus would rather

  2028. remove this whole thing

  2029. from his lampstand.

  2030. I hope last week

  2031. what you experienced

  2032. was just a sense

  2033. of reverence

  2034. for who Jesus is,

  2035. that maybe Jesus

  2036. isn't quite the

  2037. bubbling head Jesus

  2038. that we picture,

2039. the one we bring out

  2040. when we're sick,

2041. the one we bring out

  2042. when we're stressed,

  2043. that this Jesus

  2044. is far beyond

  2045. anything that we

  2046. can imagine.

  2047. But today,

  2048. I hope you

  2049. understand that

  2050. all of this,

  2051. all of this

  2052. has something

  2053. to do with love.

  2054. Final question

  2055. I wonder whether

  2056. you may ask.

2057. Well, how do we love?

  2058. How do we love?

  2059. I found there's

  2060. a really practical

  2061. way for me,

  2062. maybe as a guy

  2063. who's less attached

  2064. to my emotions

  2065. than the average

  2066. person.

  2067. The way I try

  2068. and remind myself

  2069. to love is,

  2070. when was the last

  2071. time I went out

  2072. of my way

  2073. for someone?

  2074. That's it.

  2075. I mean,

  2076. I know it's a low bar.

  2077. Those of you

  2078. who are really good

  2079. at loving,

  2080. you're just like,

  2081. that's lame.

  2082. But so often,

  2083. I struggle to go

  2084. out of my way

  2085. for someone.

  2086. If someone

  2087. needs something,

  2088. if my wife

  2089. needs me to go

  2090. and get the milk,

  2091. I'm like,

2092. that's out of my way,

  2093. darling.

  2094. I love you.

  2095. But I love

  2096. Indeed's as well.

  2097. Am I willing

2098. to go out of my way?

  2099. If I asked you,

  2100. hey,

  2101. can you do this

  2102. with me?

  2103. Oh,

  2104. that takes my

  2105. Saturday afternoon.

  2106. That's going out

  2107. of my way.

  2108. Do we have

  2109. that capacity?

  2110. Oh,

  2111. there's prison

  2112. training this

  2113. afternoon.

  2114. Oh,

  2115. but I was going

  2116. to go play pool.

  2117. Are we willing

  2118. to go out

  2119. of our way

  2120. for each other?

  2121. Someone is in need

  2122. financially.

  2123. Are we willing

  2124. to go out

  2125. of our way?

  2126. I think that's

  2127. a fairly,

  2128. again,

  2129. low bar,

  2130. but a fairly

  2131. decent indicator

  2132. of how well

  2133. this community

  2134. loves.

  2135. Are we a community

  2136. that are willing

  2137. to go out

  2138. of our way,

  2139. one,

  2140. for each other,

  2141. and two,

  2142. for those outside?

  2143. I think if we

  2144. can do that,

  2145. we might be

  2146. on the right track.

  2147. But again,

  2148. it starts off

  2149. with the same

  2150. thing.

  2151. It has to be

  2152. from a group

  2153. of people

  2154. who know

  2155. deeply in

  2156. their hearts

  2157. and souls

  2158. that they

  2159. are loved.

  2160. That's the only

  2161. reason you do it,

  2162. because there are

  2163. actually plenty

  2164. of people that

  2165. are doing great

  2166. work outside

  2167. in society

  2168. that don't

  2169. know the love

  2170. of God.

  2171. That's not

  2172. who Jesus

  2173. is talking to.

  2174. Jesus is talking

  2175. to the church.

  2176. Jesus is talking

  2177. to us.

  2178. Are we a group

  2179. of people

  2180. who know

  2181. that we are

  2182. loved and

  2183. are willing

  2184. to go out

  2185. of our way?

  2186. That's my

  2187. final question.

  2188. And I pray

  2189. that we are.

  2190. I pray

  2191. that we are.

  2192. Why don't we

  2193. pray now?

  2194. Why don't we

  2195. spend some time

  2196. as I invite

  2197. the team up?

  2198. Let's ask

  2199. the Lord.

  2200. Well,

  2201. first of all,

  2202. no,

  2203. no,

  2204. actually,

  2205. let's just do

  2206. what he says

  2207. here.

  2208. Remember

  2209. and repent.

  2210. If you are

  2211. that person

  2212. who actually

  2213. does remember

  2214. that moment

  2215. that you

  2216. experienced

  2217. the love

  2218. of Christ,

  2219. let's just,

  2220. why don't you

  2221. spend that

  2222. moment reminiscing

  2223. with him?

  2224. Jesus,

  2225. do you remember

  2226. that time

  2227. when you

  2228. just came

  2229. and touched

  2230. me so deep

  2231. in my heart

  2232. that I

  2233. couldn't ignore

  2234. it anymore?

  2235. Close your

  2236. eyes and just

  2237. reimagine yourself

  2238. being in that

  2239. place.

  2240. Maybe it was

  2241. at a youth

  2242. camp.

  2243. Maybe it

  2244. was in

  2245. church.

  2246. For me,

  2247. it's the

  2248. most random

  2249. place in a

  2250. pub called

  2251. Weatherspoons

  2252. in England

  2253. on a Tuesday

  2254. morning that

  2255. just completely

  2256. undid me.

  2257. I was in

  2258. tears on this

  2259. Tuesday morning

  2260. in this pub

  2261. because I

  2262. just realized

  2263. that the

  2264. Lord was

  2265. with me

  2266. and that

  2267. he loved

  2268. me.

  2269. And I

  2270. tell you

  2271. what,

  2272. that moment

  2273. keeps me

  2274. going today.

  2275. we spend

  2276. a few

  2277. minutes now

  2278. and we

  2279. don't need

  2280. to rush

  2281. this,

  2282. can we

  2283. spend a

  2284. few

  2285. minutes

  2286. now

  2287. just

  2288. remembering,

  2289. reminiscing

  2290. of that

  2291. love.

  2292. love.

  2293. Jesus

  2294. towards the

  2295. end of his

  2296. time on

  2297. earth,

  2298. he's

  2299. talking about

  2300. the signs

  2301. of the

  2302. end of

  2303. the age.

  2304. He's

  2305. saying,

  2306. this world

  2307. isn't going

  2308. to be around

  2309. forever.

  2310. And he

  2311. gives

  2312. some signs

  2313. as to

  2314. what will

  2315. happen

  2316. at the

  2317. end.

  2318. Matthew

    Matthew 24:6

  2319. 24

  2320. verse 6

  2321. he says,

  2322. and you'll

  2323. hear wars

  2324. and rumors

  2325. of wars.

  2326. See that

  2327. you're not

  2328. alarmed,

  2329. this must

  2330. take place,

  2331. but the

  2332. end is

  2333. not yet.

  2334. The

  2335. nation

  2336. will rise

  2337. against

  2338. nation

  2339. and kingdom

  2340. against

  2341. kingdom

  2342. and there

  2343. will be

  2344. famines

  2345. and earthquakes

  2346. in various

  2347. places.

  2348. All these

  2349. are but

  2350. the beginning

  2351. of the

  2352. birth pains.

  2353. Then they'll

  2354. deliver you up

  2355. to tribulation

  2356. and put you

  2357. to death

  2358. and you'll

  2359. be hated

  2360. by all

  2361. nations

  2362. for my

  2363. namesake.

  2364. And many

  2365. will fall

  2366. away and

  2367. betray one

  2368. another and

  2369. hate one

  2370. another.

  2371. And many

  2372. false prophets

  2373. will arise

  2374. and lead

  2375. many astray.

  2376. But then he

  2377. finishes with

  2378. this.

  2379. That's not a

  2380. very fun

  2381. list.

  2382. But he

  2383. finishes with

  2384. the final

  2385. whammy.

  2386. And because

  2387. of lawlessness

  2388. will be

  2389. increasing,

  2390. the love

  2391. of many

  2392. will grow

  2393. cold.

  2394. That's the

  2395. biggest

  2396. danger.

  2397. Not floods,

  2398. not typhoons,

  2399. not wars.

  2400. It's that the

  2401. love will

  2402. grow cold.

  2403. But the

  2404. one who

  2405. endures to

  2406. the end

  2407. will be

  2408. saved.

  2409. So now

  2410. we've

  2411. remembered.

  2412. And for

  2413. those of us

  2414. who haven't

  2415. got that

  2416. moment to

  2417. draw back

  2418. on,

  2419. that's

  2420. completely

  2421. okay.

  2422. But it's

  2423. not okay to

  2424. just be happy

  2425. with that and

  2426. go,

  2427. then it's

  2428. not me.

  2429. Then you

  2430. ask the

  2431. Lord.

  2432. Lord,

  2433. would you

  2434. peel back

  2435. the curtain

  2436. for me?

  2437. Would you

  2438. let me see

  2439. who you

  2440. truly are?

  2441. Would you

  2442. let me

  2443. experience the

  2444. love that

  2445. this guy is

  2446. talking about?

  2447. And I'll tell

  2448. you, when you

  2449. get that

  2450. moment, when you

  2451. experience that

  2452. moment, it

  2453. won't be any

  2454. words that

  2455. I say.

  2456. If you

  2457. know, you

  2458. know.

  2459. And we

  2460. join you

  2461. together.

  2462. None of us

  2463. are perfect.

  2464. None of us

  2465. always feel

  2466. love all the

  2467. time.

  2468. It's

  2469. something that

  2470. we have to

  2471. remember.

  2472. So start that

  2473. journey today.

  2474. Ask him to

  2475. reveal himself.

  2476. love.

  2477. You can be a

  2478. Christian for

  2479. 50 years and

  2480. not experience

  2481. any love, but

  2482. that's not what

  2483. we want.

  2484. But we know

  2485. that Jesus is

  2486. willing to pull

  2487. back that

  2488. curtain.

  2489. And then

  2490. let's repent.

  2491. We remember

  2492. and then we

  2493. repent.

  2494. turn back.

  2495. commit right now,

  2496. this moment,

  2497. to living in a

  2498. way that is

  2499. worthy of the

  2500. love that you

  2501. received.

  2502. See what kind

  2503. of love the

  2504. Father has given

  2505. to us, that we

  2506. should be called

  2507. children of God.

  2508. love.

  2509. How deep, how

  2510. great is that

  2511. love.

  2512. And I'll finish

  2513. with this prayer.

  2514. It's a prayer that

  2515. Paul wrote and

  2516. prayed for the

  2517. church in

  2518. Ephesus.

  2519. He says in

  2520. chapter 3,

  2521. for this reason

  2522. I bow my

  2523. knees.

  2524. knees.

  2525. to the

  2526. Father from

  2527. whom every

  2528. family in

  2529. heaven and

  2530. on earth is

  2531. named.

  2532. That according

  2533. to the riches

  2534. of his glory,

  2535. he may grant

  2536. you to be

  2537. strengthened with

  2538. power through

  2539. his spirit in

  2540. your inner

  2541. being, so

  2542. that Christ may

  2543. dwell in your

  2544. hearts, our

  2545. hearts through

  2546. faith.

  2547. And here it

  2548. comes, that you

  2549. being rooted and

  2550. grounded in love

  2551. may have strength

  2552. to comprehend with

  2553. all the saints

  2554. what is the

  2555. breadth and length

  2556. and height and

  2557. depth, and to

  2558. know the love of

  2559. Christ that

  2560. surpasses knowledge.

  2561. That you,

  2562. that you,

  2563. English

  2564. gathering of

  2565. Kong Fu

  2566. Church in

  2567. Admorti in

  2568. Hong Kong,

  2569. may be filled

  2570. with all the

  2571. fullness of

  2572. God.

  2573. Now to him

  2574. who is able to

  2575. do far more

  2576. abundantly than

  2577. all that we

  2578. ask or think

  2579. according to the

  2580. power at work

  2581. within us, to

  2582. him be glory in

  2583. the church and

  2584. in Christ Jesus

  2585. throughout all

  2586. generations,

  2587. forever and

  2588. ever.

  2589. Amen.
