  1. Good morning, everyone.

  2. A very happy new year to all of you.

  3. I think you can still say that, can't you?

  4. I was saying to somebody in the congregation,

  5. I generally say it through till about the middle of April.

  6. I'm just kidding.

  7. It's wonderful to see you all, and thank you for coming along.

  8. Before I start to try and teach you,

  9. maybe we could have a word of prayer together as we sit.

  10. Why don't we bow our heads?

  11. Gracious Father, at the beginning of this new year,

  12. we want to pray that this coming year,

  13. we might seek you earnestly.

  14. Your word assures us, Father,

  15. that if we come close to you,

  16. you will come close to us.

  17. And Father, may that be our prayer for this new year.

  18. That, Lord, we might seek in new ways to come closer to you,

  19. that you might come closer to us.

  20. And we might know what it is to live in the light of the fullness of life

  21. that Jesus told us was the birthright, almost, of his disciples.

  22. So I pray now, in this time together,

  23. in this house of God,

  24. that we may come to your word with expectant hearts.

  25. And Father, you would speak to us.

  26. And Father, we might hear you and respond.

  27. In Christ's name we pray.

  28. Amen.

  29. So, Ephesians chapter 19 and verse 2,

  30. Paul asked the elders of the church in Ephesus,

  31. I mean, this is not just your kind of run-of-the-mill people

  32. who show up, you know, now and then to church.

  33. These are the people who were there week by week

  34. and led the church.

  35. And Paul says to them,

  36. kind of impudent in a way, I guess,

  37. did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?

  38. I don't know if there was anything visibly lacking about these men,

  39. but Paul asked them the question,

  40. and they honestly answered.

  41. He said, no, we never heard of the Holy Spirit.

  42. So, there's a wonderful story,

  43. which I think is worth retelling,

  44. about a pastor in the Midwest of America

  45. who was greatly beloved by his congregations.

  46. He visited the sick and kept his sermons brief.

  47. People loved him for that.

  48. Just saying.

  49. But he had one habit

  50. that his elders were very concerned about.

  51. And it was this,

  52. that at the same time every day,

  53. five o'clock,

  54. he would walk down from the church office

  55. down to the crossing on the railway

  56. that went through their town,

  57. and he'd simply stand there

  58. and watch the train go through.

  59. And, you know, at first they thought,

  60. is this train spotting?

  61. And then they realized,

  62. it's the same train every day,

  63. so it's the same number every day.

  64. So it wasn't much fun train spotting down there.

  65. So they put their heads together.

  66. And they decided to ask him

  67. what was going on.

  68. They were slightly frightened

  69. that there may be some sinister reason

  70. for him doing this.

  71. So they called him in,

  72. and they said to him,

  73. Pastor,

  74. why is it

  75. that you go down to the train track

  76. at the same time every day

  77. and watch the train go through?

  78. Pastor said,

  79. oh, that's simple.

  80. He said,

  81. it's the only thing in this town that moves

  82. that I don't have to push.

  83. Having spent the greater part of my ministry

  84. ministering to clergy,

  85. I am sad to say

  86. that there are some clergy

  87. who end up slightly like that.

  88. A little cynical,

  89. occasionally a little bitter,

  90. that whatever they expected of their ministry,

  91. it's never, ever quite delivered.

  92. I remember once giving a lift to a curate,

  93. and he got in my car,

  94. and he was going on a two-week holiday,

  95. and I said to him,

  96. you're looking forward to your holidays.

  97. He said,

  98. I'm glad to be rid of that lot for a fortnight.

  99. I said,

  100. what do you mean?

  101. He said,

  102. this would be a great job

  103. if it wasn't for the congregation.

  104. I said to him,

  105. it would be no job

  106. if there was no congregation.

  107. You know,

  108. calm down.

  109. But what about the rest of us?

  110. Isn't it true that many of us

  111. occasionally

  112. feel that

  113. our Christian walk

  114. feels more push

  115. than being pulled along

  116. by the power of God

  117. in his Holy Spirit?

  118. Are there not days,

  119. friends,

  120. where God seems

  121. very distanced from us,

  122. and sometimes days

  123. can become weeks,

  124. and weeks

  125. can become months,

  126. and months

  127. can even become years?

  128. I want to try

  129. and address that today

  130. with you.

  131. At the beginning of the new year,

  132. I'm not making any assumptions

  133. about you.

  134. I'm not assuming

  135. that everybody

  136. in the house this morning

  137. knows God

  138. through Jesus Christ

  139. in the power of the Spirit.

  140. I'm not assuming

  141. that you're all depressed

  142. and worried beyond,

  143. I'm not making any assumptions,

  144. other than the fact

  145. that you're here,

  146. and as far as I can see,

  147. you're still breathing.

  148. And neither is it my intention

  149. to depress you

  150. by cataloging

  151. all the reasons

  152. why we might face

  153. this new year

  154. with a sense of anxiety.

  155. This new year

  156. is upon us,

  157. and I think what I can say

  158. with some confidence

  159. is that almost everywhere

  160. you look at the beginning

  161. of this new year,

  162. there will be good reasons

  163. for feeling

  164. on the anxious side.

  165. And no amount of food,

  166. no amount of alcohol,

  167. no amount of holidays,

  168. no amount of spending,

  169. no amount of,

  170. no escapism of any kind

  171. will help you

  172. get rid of that anxiety.

  173. I told you this before,

  174. you know,

  175. but there is economic anxiety

  176. at the moment.

  177. some of you

  178. will be financially stressed,

  179. and you will feel

  180. that you have to keep quiet

  181. about that.

  182. There is environmental

  183. challenges,

  184. it's not for me to tell you

  185. what you must think

  186. of these things.

  187. But clearly,

  188. even in this last week,

  189. we have had rainfall

  190. like we've never had before,

  191. and as we sit here

  192. in the dry today,

  193. river levels are still rising

  194. a little further up

  195. the River Severn

  196. and places will be flooded.

  197. There are eschatological concerns,

  198. let me put that in English

  199. for you.

  200. Many, many writers

  201. at this point in time

  202. are asking themselves

  203. this question

  204. and by implication

  205. asking us,

  206. where will it all end?

  207. And then there are

  208. emotional challenges.

  209. I read some academic

  210. psychology papers

  211. on the impact of COVID

  212. upon the nation's

  213. mental health.

  214. Again, I don't want

  215. to catalogue that with you,

  216. but I didn't find one writer

  217. who thought that

  218. the long-term impact

  219. of COVID-19

  220. on our mental health

  221. would be a positive thing.

  222. And I think we're seeing

  223. that now reflected

  224. in the statistics

  225. of people who are off work

  226. with mental illness,

  227. people who are waiting

  228. for an appointment

  229. on the national health

  230. to have their mental illness

  231. treated, etc., etc.

  232. But then more personally,

  233. the emotional challenges

  234. are around broken relationships,

  235. whether caused by

  236. irrevocable breakdown,

  237. by loss,

  238. by loneliness,

  239. whatever.

  240. or again,

  241. being ill at this time.

  242. As we speak,

  243. the junior doctors

  244. are on strike.

  245. The threat of illness

  246. in myself

  247. or in someone I love

  248. seems a little more forceful

  249. in these days.

  250. We live in anxious times,

  251. wars, famines.

  252. Last weekend,

  253. in the Times

  254. colour supplement,

  255. and also

  256. in a number of blogs,

  257. there appeared stories

  258. of reconciliation.

  259. Stories whose intention

  260. is to lift our spirits

  261. at the beginning

  262. of a new year

  263. with whatever

  264. that new year

  265. holds for us.

  266. Take, for instance,

  267. the story of Carl Benson

  268. and John Pritchard.

  269. Through no fault of his own

  270. other than

  271. his morality,

  272. a woman he made pregnant

  273. who left him

  274. long before she had the baby

  275. had a son

  276. who became known

  277. as John Pritchard.

  278. He was put up for adoption

  279. by the mother.

  280. And for 50 years,

  281. he lived happily

  282. in the home,

  283. believing that his father

  284. was his father.

  285. Turns out,

  286. and he only discovered this

  287. when his mother,

  288. mistakenly thought

  289. she was on her deathbed,

  290. told him

  291. that the man he treated

  292. as his father

  293. for 50 years

  294. was actually not his father.

  295. All she did was

  296. she gave him a name

  297. and she gave him a place.

  298. She gave him the name

  299. and the place was Brighton.

  300. He started to do some research

  301. and discovered

  302. where his father lived.

  303. They met together.

  304. And there was a great reconciliation.

  305. I can see why stories like that

  306. might lift our spirits.

  307. It certainly lifted mine

  308. to read about them.

  309. I was moved

  310. as I

  311. heard them quoted

  312. speaking about

  313. the lost years.

  314. 50 of them.

  315. 50 lost years.

  316. Eventually,

  317. eventually,

  318. after 50 years

  319. of not knowing his father,

  320. he met his father.

  321. And they speak

  322. about lost time.

  323. I've noticed this,

  324. and some of you

  325. will have noticed it too,

  326. that the older we get,

  327. the idea of time

  328. seems to change within us.

  329. On the one hand,

  330. does it seem

  331. that the passage of time

  332. seems to accelerate to you?

  333. The older I get,

  334. the quicker it goes.

  335. I can't believe

  336. it's been Christmas

  337. and New Year again.

  338. The second thing is,

  339. and I think this is a wise thing,

  340. we become aware

  341. that whatever time

  342. we have left,

  343. we should,

  344. to use a Bible phrase,

  345. use that time

  346. aright.

  347. psalm 90,

  348. the psalmist writes this,

  349. teach us to number

  350. our days aright,

  351. so that we may gain

  352. a heart

  353. of wisdom.

  354. I don't want to offend you

  355. in any way,

  356. but just getting older

  357. on its own

  358. doesn't make you wiser.

  359. Some of the most childish

  360. people I know

  361. are old.

  362. But what about

  363. those lost years?

  364. What about

  365. the lost years

  366. of your walk

  367. with God

  368. as revealed to us

  369. in Jesus?

  370. I call this talk

  371. a second touch.

  372. Could have called it

  373. a first touch

  374. as far as

  375. some of you are concerned.

  376. For some of you

  377. do not even know

  378. what it is

  379. to be touched by God,

  380. not even for the first time.

  381. Some of you

  382. have been touched

  383. by God,

  384. but your experience

  385. has faded.

  386. In the book of Isaiah

    Isaiah 64 chapter mention

  387. chapter 64

  388. and verse 6,

  389. the prophet writes this,

  390. all of us

  391. have become like one

  392. who is unclean

  393. and all our righteous acts

  394. are like filthy rags.

  395. We all shrivel up

  396. like a leaf.

  397. Is this a day?

  398. When you might be honest

  399. before God

  400. and speak the truth

  401. to Him

  402. that your faith

  403. has become

  404. a little shriveled.

  405. And what you would

  406. long for

  407. is another touch

  408. from God

  409. that would re-energize

  410. your faith batteries,

  411. which would give you

  412. incentive

  413. and power

  414. to come close

  415. to God

  416. that He might

  417. come close

  418. to you.

  419. I want

  420. briefly

  421. to give you

  422. two examples

  423. from Scripture

  424. of what I'm

  425. talking about

  426. and then

  427. one example

  428. from church history.

  429. Spoiler alert,

  430. you Methodists

  431. are going to love it.

  432. the first one

  433. is in Mark

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  434. chapter 8

  435. and verse 22.

  436. This is a story

  437. of a healing

  438. of a blind man

  439. at Bethsaida.

  440. Jesus and His disciples

  441. came there

  442. and a blind man

  443. begged Jesus

  444. to touch him.

  445. He took the blind man

  446. by the hand

  447. and led him

  448. outside the village

  449. and when he spat

  450. on the man's eyes,

  451. sorry,

  452. that's not disgusting.

  453. What they thought

  454. in ancient times

  455. was that saliva

  456. was healing.

  457. Reminds me

  458. that my granny,

  459. I used to cut my knees

  460. every day

  461. playing football

  462. in the church,

  463. sorry,

  464. in the school playground.

  465. My granny

  466. always used to get

  467. the dog to lick me.

  468. Never did me any harm

  469. and it did make

  470. my legs heal

  471. and it made the dog

  472. a kind of voracious killer

  473. but

  474. so he touches him

  475. and

  476. Jesus says to him,

  477. do you see anything?

  478. He said,

  479. I see people,

  480. they look like trees

  481. walking around.

  482. Once more,

  483. once more,

  484. Jesus put his hands

  485. on the man's eyes

  486. and then his eyes

  487. were opened.

  488. His sight

  489. was restored.

  490. See,

  491. I think

  492. that's why we need

  493. a second touch

  494. at the beginning

  495. of this year.

  496. We need our vision

  497. restored.

  498. We need our walk

  499. with God

  500. strengthened.

  501. We need our hope

  502. rekindled.

  503. The second example

  504. from Scripture

  505. is the reading

  506. that we had

  507. from Acts chapter 19,

    Acts 19 chapter mention

  508. this curious story

  509. of the Ephesian elders.

  510. did you receive

  511. the Holy Spirit

  512. when you were baptized?

  513. They're like,

  514. what?

  515. We've never even

  516. heard of the Holy Spirit.

  517. And then this

  518. remarkable thing

  519. happens

  520. and I think

  521. some churches

  522. make more of this

  523. than actually

  524. we should.

  525. But what happens

  526. is,

  527. they say we've been

  528. baptized,

  529. they were baptized

  530. with John's baptism.

  531. That doesn't mean

  532. that John himself

  533. baptized them.

  534. John,

  535. as far as we know,

  536. was part of a

  537. quasi-monastic group

  538. called the Essenes.

  539. Those of you

  540. who've been

  541. to the Holy Land

  542. will know

  543. that if you

  544. head out of Jerusalem

  545. on the road

  546. to Jericho

  547. and turn a right

  548. where you would

  549. turn left

  550. to go to Jericho,

  551. you come to the

  552. caves of Qumran.

  553. Very significant caves

  554. in that they found

  555. in them

  556. Bible manuscripts

  557. on parchment.

  558. that rather

  559. reinforced the

  560. translations

  561. of the Bible

  562. that we have

  563. today.

  564. A very famous

  565. part of John's

  566. Gospel

  567. called P46

  568. was found

  569. there in those

  570. caves.

  571. But John

  572. would send

  573. his disciples

  574. out and his

  575. disciples would

  576. baptize.

  577. So they knew

  578. the baptism

  579. of John.

  580. Paul said

  581. John's baptism

  582. was a

  583. baptism of

  584. repentance.

  585. He told the

  586. people to believe

  587. in the one

  588. coming after

  589. him,

  590. that is in

  591. Jesus.

  592. On hearing

  593. this,

  594. they were

  595. baptized into

  596. the name

  597. of the Lord

  598. Jesus.

  599. When Paul

  600. placed his

  601. hands on

  602. them,

  603. the Holy

  604. Spirit came

  605. on them

  606. and they

  607. spoke in

  608. tongues

  609. and prophesied.

  610. There were

  611. about twelve

  612. men in

  613. all.

  614. Look,

  615. some churches

  616. have built

  617. something onto

  618. these verses

  619. which I

  620. think isn't

  621. right.

  622. And that

  623. is,

  624. you do

  625. not have

  626. to speak

  627. in tongues

  628. and prophesy

  629. to know

  630. that you've

  631. been filled

  632. with the

  633. Holy Spirit.

  634. Not going

  635. to harm

  636. if you do

  637. speak in

  638. tongues

  639. and prophesy,

  640. but they're

  641. gifts.

  642. They're not

  643. meant for

  644. all believers.

  645. God gives

  646. his gifts

  647. as he

  648. wills.

  649. Whatever

  650. the outward

  651. signs of

  652. being filled

  653. with the

  654. Holy Spirit,

  655. and I

  656. think they

  657. should be

  658. manifest in

  659. some way,

  660. doesn't have

  661. to be prophecy

  662. and speaking

  663. in tongues.

  664. And I

  665. know there

  666. are people

  667. in this

  668. church who

  669. are very

  670. hung up

  671. because they

  672. think unless

  673. they speak

  674. in tongues,

  675. they're somehow

  676. second class.

  677. I don't

  678. think you

  679. can justify

  680. that.

  681. From Scripture.

  682. This happened

  683. in this case

  684. at that time.

  685. It's not me

  686. saying I don't

  687. believe in the

  688. gift of tongues

  689. today or the

  690. gift of prophecy

  691. today.

  692. I'm really not

  693. saying that.

  694. What I am

  695. saying is it's

  696. a gift of the

  697. Spirit.

  698. Not all the

  699. gifts, not all

  700. God's people

  701. have all the

  702. gifts.

  703. And if you

  704. think you do,

  705. pray for

  706. humility.

  707. So,

  708. these elders,

  709. let me remind

  710. you, these

  711. are elders.

  712. This reminds

  713. us that you

  714. cannot borrow

  715. strength from

  716. status in

  717. church.

  718. I, some

  719. of you know

  720. that before I

  721. retired I was

  722. a bishop.

  723. And I can

  724. tell you there

  725. is an awful

  726. tendency to

  727. borrow strength

  728. from your

  729. status as a

  730. bishop.

  731. But I can

  732. tell you this,

  733. your spiritual

  734. leadership is

  735. always undermined

  736. when you borrow

  737. strength from

  738. status.

  739. I had a

  740. colleague once

  741. and preaching,

  742. he would say

  743. time and time

  744. again during the

  745. sermon, as a

  746. bishop, as a

  747. bishop, as a

  748. bishop.

  749. I said, you

  750. don't need to

  751. tell people you're

  752. a bishop.

  753. They can tell

  754. because of the

  755. clothes you

  756. wear.

  757. They've worked

  758. it out.

  759. No, borrowing

  760. strength from

  761. status is a

  762. really difficult

  763. thing.

  764. And if you

  765. talk to people

  766. who've held

  767. high rank in

  768. the army or

  769. the navy or

  770. the army, they

  771. will tell you

  772. that though they

  773. can pull rank

  774. any time they

  775. like to, the

  776. ones that are

  777. honest and are

  778. humble say they

  779. don't like to

  780. do that.

  781. Friend, if you

  782. are placing

  783. some security

  784. in your status

  785. here on earth,

  786. I can promise

  787. you this, it

  788. will count for

  789. nothing in

  790. heaven.

  791. The last

  792. example I

  793. want to give

  794. you, this is

  795. where the

  796. Methodists get

  797. aroused, is

  798. John Wesley.

  799. John Wesley

  800. had been

  801. ordained in

  802. the Church

  803. of England

  804. for 12

  805. years, before

  806. he was, in

  807. his words,

  808. converted.

  809. In a small

  810. meeting in

  811. Aldersgate,

  812. London,

  813. Wesley records,

  814. one was

  815. reading the

  816. preface to

  817. Luther's

  818. commentary on

  819. the book of

  820. Romans.

  821. insomnia.

  822. I mean, I

  823. can't just say

  824. about that

  825. preface.

  826. If any of you

  827. have problems

  828. with insomnia,

  829. I would suggest

  830. you get that

  831. book and read

  832. the preface.

  833. I guarantee you

  834. will be

  835. unconscious within

  836. minutes.

  837. Wesley's reading

  838. this, and then he

  839. says this,

  840. I felt my

  841. heart strangely

  842. warmed.

  843. I felt I

  844. did trust in

  845. Christ, Christ

  846. alone for

  847. salvation, and

  848. an assurance

  849. was given me

  850. that he had

  851. taken away my

  852. sins, even

  853. mine, and

  854. saved me from

  855. the law of

  856. sin and

  857. death.

  858. You know, the

  859. Bible says that

  860. when a sinner

  861. repents, there's

  862. joy in heaven.

  863. I would imagine

  864. when God heard

  865. John Wesley's

  866. words there, an

  867. Anglican clergyman,

  868. I think the

  869. champagne corks

  870. would have been

  871. popping, don't

  872. you?

  873. I think they

  874. would have been

  875. great delight

  876. that somebody who

  877. could have drawn

  878. strength from

  879. status, who

  880. could have been

  881. far too proud to

  882. kind of believe

  883. that simple

  884. gospel stuff,

  885. was profoundly

  886. changed by it.

  887. Changed for the

  888. rest of his life

  889. here on earth.

  890. And as a

  891. result, God

  892. blessed the

  893. church across

  894. the world with

  895. the Methodist

  896. church.

  897. What an

  898. amazing story

  899. that is.

  900. Somebody once

  901. wrote, there is

  902. no bigger tragedy

  903. than the tragedy

  904. of the unopened

  905. gift.

  906. gift.

  907. I wonder, I

  908. wonder at the

  909. beginning of this

  910. new year, if

  911. there are not

  912. gifts that God

  913. has for you that

  914. as yet remain

  915. unopened.

  916. Come on

  917. people.

  918. Be honest

  919. enough to

  920. admit that you

  921. need in some

  922. cases a first

  923. touch and in

  924. some cases a

  925. second touch.

  926. Today is the

  927. day, well

  928. yesterday actually

  929. was the

  930. epiphany, but

  931. today is the

  932. day the church

  933. celebrates the

  934. epiphany, the

  935. revelation of

  936. God to the

  937. Gentiles, which

  938. speaks to most

  939. of us.

  940. Epiphany speaks

  941. to us of the

  942. need for fresh

  943. revelation.

  944. At the beginning

  945. of a new year

  946. which creaks with

  947. the noise of

  948. uncertainty and

  949. turbulence.

  950. Let me ask you

  951. a question.

  952. Is this your

  953. moment?

  954. Do you have

  955. any expectation

  956. that right now

  957. God wants to

  958. speak right into

  959. your heart?

  960. That you may

  961. seek forgiveness

  962. maybe for a

  963. habit that you

  964. would like to

  965. break, maybe an

  966. addictive habit.

  967. maybe you're in

  968. a relationship

  969. where there are

  970. patterns of

  971. behaviour that

  972. are just repeated

  973. and destructive

  974. and you know

  975. you need a new

  976. start and

  977. forgiveness.

  978. Is it your

  979. moment to seek

  980. a revelation of

  981. God?

  982. To seek renewal

  983. in your Christian

  984. life?

  985. To discover a new

  986. confidence in God?

  987. A new freedom in

  988. God?

  989. And maybe as

  990. important as

  991. any of these

  992. a new hope

  993. in God.

  994. Don't let your

  995. life drift by

  996. wanting your

  997. real life with

  998. God to begin

  999. at some stage

  1000. in the future.

  1001. That question

  1002. that we asked

  1003. at the beginning,

  1004. Russ asked at

  1005. the beginning,

  1006. what do I want

  1007. God to do in

  1008. my life in the

  1009. next 12 months?

  1010. It doesn't

  1011. matter if your

  1012. answer was a

  1013. bit hazy.

  1014. Let me try and

  1015. focus it a bit

  1016. more.

  1017. What do I want

  1018. God to help me

  1019. to do in this

  1020. next year?

  1021. What do I want

  1022. God to help me

  1023. to stop doing

  1024. in this next

  1025. year?

  1026. Do I want

  1027. hope or am I

  1028. happy just to be

  1029. a kind of

  1030. religious

  1031. wishful

  1032. thinker?

  1033. Or would I

  1034. really like the

  1035. hope that only a

  1036. relationship with

  1037. God can give

  1038. me?

  1039. And do I need

  1040. the help of

  1041. God's Holy

  1042. Spirit just to

  1043. help me to

  1044. cope?

  1045. I might like to

  1046. think just for a

  1047. moment about

  1048. those questions

  1049. and come to

  1050. your own

  1051. conclusion.

  1052. I can't make

  1053. any of you do

  1054. anything.

  1055. Do I need

  1056. a second touch?

  1057. What a great

  1058. question to

  1059. start the

  1060. new year with.

  1061. I can only

  1062. pray that you

  1063. will answer

  1064. that question

  1065. honestly.

  1066. So I want to

  1067. end by asking

  1068. you to stand

  1069. please.

  1070. And what I'd

  1071. like you to do

  1072. is just to take

  1073. two or three

  1074. very deep

  1075. breaths.

  1076. and I'd like you

  1077. to focus

  1078. your minds

  1079. on the God

  1080. in heaven who

  1081. looks down on

  1082. you,

  1083. us,

  1084. both,

  1085. and wants

  1086. to know

  1087. which of you

  1088. are serious

  1089. in this,

  1090. the beginning of

  1091. this new year

  1092. in wanting

  1093. to grow

  1094. closer to

  1095. God.

  1096. I'm going to

  1097. end with a

  1098. prayer that

  1099. was written

  1100. by a guy

  1101. called Greg

  1102. Lavoie and

  1103. it speaks to

  1104. the lost

  1105. years of

  1106. our relationship

  1107. with God,

  1108. those of us

  1109. who've experienced

  1110. such things.

  1111. It goes like

  1112. this,

  1113. to sinful

  1114. patterns of

  1115. behaviour

  1116. that never

  1117. got confronted

  1118. and changed,

  1119. abilities and

  1120. gifts that

  1121. never get

  1122. cultivated and

  1123. deployed,

  1124. until weeks

  1125. become months

  1126. and months

  1127. turn into

  1128. years,

  1129. and one day

  1130. you're looking

  1131. back on a

  1132. life of deep,

  1133. intimate,

  1134. gut-wrenchingly

  1135. honest conversations

  1136. you never had,

  1137. great,

  1138. bold prayers

  1139. you never

  1140. prayed,

  1141. exhilarating

  1142. risks you

  1143. never took,

  1144. sacrificial

  1145. gifts you

  1146. never offered,

  1147. lives you

  1148. never touched,

  1149. and you're

  1150. sitting in a

  1151. recliner with

  1152. a shriveled

  1153. soul and

  1154. forgotten dreams

  1155. and you

  1156. realise there

  1157. was a world

  1158. of desperate

  1159. need and a

  1160. great God

  1161. calling you

  1162. to be part

  1163. of something

  1164. bigger than

  1165. yourself.

  1166. You see the

  1167. person you

  1168. could have

  1169. become but

  1170. did not.

  1171. you never

  1172. followed your

  1173. calling,

  1174. you never

  1175. got out of

  1176. the boat.

  1177. Father God,

  1178. I want to

  1179. pray for

  1180. people in

  1181. church now.

  1182. Lord,

  1183. then if any

  1184. of those

  1185. descriptions

  1186. fit them,

  1187. Lord,

  1188. help them to

  1189. know now

  1190. that the only

  1191. prescription to

  1192. those descriptions

  1193. is you and

  1194. your Holy

  1195. Spirit and

  1196. your ability

  1197. to work in

  1198. us and

  1199. through us.

  1200. And Lord,

  1201. that grace is

  1202. unconditional.

  1203. All we have

  1204. to do is to

  1205. say, yes,

  1206. touch me,

  1207. Lord,

  1208. that I may

  1209. see clearly,

  1210. that my vision

  1211. may be restored,

  1212. and this

  1213. year will be

  1214. a significant

  1215. year for me

  1216. in my walk

  1217. with you.

  1218. And a

  1219. significant year

  1220. for this

  1221. church as

  1222. it seeks to

  1223. grow into

  1224. the likeness

  1225. of Christ.

  1226. So we

  1227. stand,

  1228. Father,

  1229. in silence

  1230. now and

  1231. pray,

  1232. come,

  1233. Holy Spirit.

  1234. Amen.

  1235. Amen.

  1236. So, Lord,

  1237. we pray,

  1238. we believe,

  1239. help our

  1240. unbelief.

  1241. And the

  1242. people who

  1243. agreed say

  1244. together in a

  1245. loud voice,

  1246. Amen.

  1247. Amen.

  1248. Amen.
