  1. Bring them to me.

  2. Bring them to me.

  3. That's what I felt the Lord remind me

  4. I was like, no, I don't want people coming here

  5. and seeing the curtains or seeing the lights

  6. or seeing the band and going, oh, I'm at church now.

  7. Bring them to me is all he said.

  8. When you walk in here, the only hope, the only prayer

  9. is that you meet Jesus.

  10. You know, we're trying something different here.

  11. We're trying something maybe a little bit strange

  12. to all of us.

  13. It's just, we're still figuring it out.

  14. And you know what?

  15. There's so many ways to do church,

  16. but there's actually only one way to be the church

  17. and that is to keep our eyes on him.

  18. The thing that I'm most terrified of

  19. is that we get so good at doing church.

  20. We have a great team of people.

  21. Even when I got here, the chairs were all done,

  22. the stars were out, the sound was on,

  23. people playing and it's all great.

  24. It all feels like church.

  25. There's so many ways to do church,

  26. but there's only really one way to be the church

  27. because the church is looking at Christ.

  28. Can you believe this is only week three that we're here?

  29. It's only the third week.

  30. We've got so many things to figure out.

  31. Actually, those of you who even shared before it,

  32. who were serving before at KFCI,

  33. ambassadors and all these other teams,

  34. hey, we're trying to figure out what that looks like.

  35. Give us a few weeks just to figure out

  36. what actually we need here

  37. and how you can serve

  38. because actually you're absolutely here for a reason,

  39. which is for him.

  40. We're here to gather and then we're here to scatter

  41. to actually use our hands to serve each other as well.

  42. That's the second one that we read, right?

  43. So just give us a few weeks

  44. and we're going to figure out what that looks like.

  45. But can we keep our eyes on him?

  46. That's my hope.

  47. That's my prayer

  48. because it is so dangerous.

  49. Even today I felt it.

  50. Even as we were praying in there,

  51. I was like,

  52. man,

  53. this could just start heading off in a direction

  54. and it will be too late to catch.

  55. Then we'll be back to just doing normal church

  56. in the normal way.

  57. And people can come in through the doors,

  58. have a great time,

  59. sing a few songs,

  60. play a bit of ping pong

  61. and then leave and not have met Jesus at all.

  62. That's what scares me the most

  63. because Christ didn't ask us to build the church.

  64. Christ asked us to make disciples.

  65. If you're here for the first time,

  66. I welcome you.

  67. But also then ask,

  68. actually,

  69. why are you here?

  70. Or those of you who have been here a lot,

  71. why are you here?

  72. I hope it's not just to attend church.

  73. I hope it's simply just,

  74. you want to become a disciple of Jesus

  75. and you want to figure out

  76. what that means

  77. to do it together.

  78. Okay,

  79. so let's have a think about that as we go.

  80. We've been going through the book of Revelation,

  81. which is a crazy one to do.

  82. But for me,

  83. it was actually,

  84. how do we start with the end in mind?

  85. Jesus has some pretty damning words

  86. to say about the church.

  87. If we're starting something here,

  88. let's figure out

  89. what it is we're actually doing.

  90. Because I want to know

  91. what Jesus says about the church

  92. because I don't want to be guilty

  93. of getting to a place

  94. where at the end,

  95. I've been doing church for 50 years

  96. and Jesus comes and says,

  97. you were doing church,

  98. but you weren't the church.

  99. Does that scare you?

  100. That scares me.

  101. That really scares me.

  102. So we're going to carry on.

  103. We're going through

  104. the seven churches in Asia

  105. and we're going to be going through

  106. the second one today.

  107. Are we okay with the sound?

  108. Can you guys hear me at the back?

  109. Now you can.

  110. Do I just need to speak louder or?

  111. Okay,

  112. okay,

  113. good.

  114. Jesus,

  115. John's praying.

  116. John's on the island of Patmos.

  117. He's praying

  118. because the church is going through

  119. all kinds of trouble.

  120. And then Jesus opens up the curtain

  121. and we actually have curtains now.

  122. Jesus actually reveals the curtain

  123. and that's his response.

  124. He's saying,

  125. actually,

  126. John,

  127. you're so worried about the church.

  128. Let me tell you who I am

  129. because when you know who I am,

  130. you won't have to be worried

  131. about anything else.

  132. So Jesus peels back the curtain

  133. and shows the real Jesus right now.

  134. And then he talks to the church

  135. and he talks to the seven churches of Asia.

  136. Of course,

  137. there aren't just seven churches in Asia,

  138. but these seven churches

  139. represent the whole complete church.

  140. And last week,

  141. we went through the letter to Ephesus.

  142. So he starts from Patmos

  143. and then he heads to Ephesus first.

  144. It's the first place that he goes to

  145. and it's the metropolitan.

  146. And he's saying,

  147. you guys are doing the most amazing church.

  148. You are doing church very,

  149. very well.

  150. But,

  151. but what?

  152. What was the problem?

  153. What was the problem with that church?

  154. You've lost your first love.

  155. You've lost the butterflies.

  156. You've lost the reason

  157. why you're even doing it.

  158. You're an A-star pupil,

  159. but you've forgotten the name

  160. of the class that you're on.

  161. The name of the class that you're on

  162. is love

  163. and you've forgotten it.

  164. And because of that,

  165. even though you are an A-star church,

  166. I will shut you down.

  167. That is what he says.

  168. I will come to you

  169. and I will remove you

  170. from your lampstand.

  171. That should send shivers down our spine.

  172. When you're thinking about what church is,

  173. you're like,

  174. wait,

  175. I could go to the most perfect church

  176. and the person that that church

  177. is trying to worship

  178. is willing to shut it down.

  179. And I said last week,

  180. some of us turn up to church

  181. with the heart,

  182. more like a memorial service.

  183. Doesn't it feel like that sometimes?

  184. You turn to church,

  185. you sing songs about a guy,

  186. you talk about a guy

  187. and then you leave

  188. and you never really talk to

  189. and meet or hear from the guy at all.

  190. It's just a memorial service

  191. you've just been to.

  192. Yet Jesus says,

  193. I am the first and the last.

  194. I was dead

  195. and now I am alive forevermore.

  196. Even more so,

  197. I am walking among you.

  198. I am here right now.

  199. I will sit on a beanbag

  200. if that doesn't freak you out completely.

  201. But I'm here.

  202. Jesus is here.

  203. I'm trying to convince you of that today.

  204. That as you gather here,

  205. Jesus himself is among us.

  206. And we should treat that

  207. with a bit of,

  208. well,

  209. a lot more reverence

  210. than maybe we already do.

  211. So then after the messenger

  212. passes it to the church in Ephesus,

  213. he then goes 30 miles north or so

  214. to the next place.

  215. And then he writes to the church

  216. in Smyrna.

  217. Now,

  218. these seven churches,

  219. he's basically going around

  220. Asia Minor,

  221. which is modern day.

  222. Do you know where Asia Minor is?

  223. What is it?

  224. Modern day Asia Minor now?

  225. Does anyone know?

  226. Turkey.

  227. Put your hands up

  228. if you've been to Turkey.

  229. So has anyone been to this next place?

  230. It's Smyrna.

  231. Modern day is called Izmir.

  232. Put your hand up

  233. if you've been to Izmir.

  234. A few of us.

  235. Out of the seven letters

  236. that he writes,

  237. this is an interesting one

  238. because one,

  239. Smyrna Izmir is still standing

  240. right now.

  241. And two,

  242. it's the only church

  243. out of the seven churches

  244. which is still also remaining.

  245. So this is fascinating.

  246. I don't know if it fascinates you.

  247. It fascinates me.

  248. And this one is interesting

  249. because last week

  250. to Ephesus,

  251. he was like,

  252. you guys are A-star,

  253. but you've done one mistake

  254. and it's a major one.

  255. In England,

  256. when we had driving tests,

  257. you can have up to 15 minors.

  258. Right?

  259. But then if you have one major,

  260. you're out.

  261. You're done.

  262. Yeah?

  263. So he's like,

  264. you're A-star in everything else,

  265. but you have one major problem.

  266. No love.

  267. So I would wipe you out

  268. unless you repent.

  269. Smyrna is interesting

  270. because he actually doesn't

  271. give them any problems.

  272. They actually don't have

  273. almost a threat

  274. or an ultimatum.

  275. They've actually done everything right,

  276. but what's the problem here?

  277. So we're going to read that now.

  278. Hey,

  279. for the gathering,

  280. normally we have actually

  281. asked people to stand.

  282. I know that it's getting

  283. a little bit harder and harder now,

  284. but you know what?

  285. Bear with me.

  286. I just want to keep going with this.

  287. Can I invite you to stand

  288. for the word of the Lord?

  289. Also,

  290. we have a very dear brother of ours

  291. who I hope you meet one day.

  292. He's our social chair

  293. of the gathering.

  294. And now you're all standing up.

  295. You might not be able to see him,

  296. but he's quite tall.

  297. That's Kubon over there.

  298. Kubon,

  299. wave to people.

  300. That is Kubon.

  301. He is our social chair.

  302. He's the one who helps us organize

  303. even something like

  304. the volleyball this afternoon.

  305. And Kubon's brother

  306. is here to visit us

  307. who is just as,

  308. if not taller.

  309. Are you taller than Kubon?

  310. So I want to ask Qjoy

  311. to read to us

  312. because I have

  313. a fairly high voice.

  314. I thought it would balance it

  315. with someone

  316. who actually has

  317. a very manly voice.

  318. So we're going to invite

  319. Qjoy to read

  320. Revelation chapter 2

    Revelation 2:8–11

  321. verse 8 to 11 for us.

  322. All right.

  323. Revelation 2.

  324. You said 8 to 11?

  325. Yes.

  326. All right.

  327. And to the angel

  328. of the church

  329. in Smyrna write,

  330. the words of the first

  331. and the last

  332. who died

  333. and came to life.

  334. I know your tribulation

  335. and your poverty,

  336. but you are rich.

  337. And the slander of those

  338. who say that

  339. they are Jews

  340. and are not,

  341. but are a synagogue

  342. of Satan.

  343. Do not fear

  344. what you are about

  345. to suffer.

  346. Behold,

  347. the devil is about

  348. to throw some of you

  349. into prison

  350. that you may be tested

  351. and for 10 days

  352. you will have tribulation.

  353. Be faithful unto death

  354. and I will give you

  355. the crown of life.

  356. He who has an ear,

  357. let him hear

  358. what the Spirit says

  359. to the churches.

  360. The one who conquers

  361. will not be hurt

  362. by the second death.

  363. Amen.

  364. This is the word of the Lord.

  365. Thank you.

  366. Thank you, Qjoy.

  367. Oh, I can have my Bible.

  368. Take a seat.

  369. Thank you.

  370. So,

  371. he's writing

  372. to the next church.

  373. So, this messenger

  374. takes this letter up

  375. 40 miles from Ephesus

  376. and he ends up

  377. in Smyrna.

  378. And maybe,

  379. similar to this,

  380. a group here

  381. would stand

  382. and listen to this letter

  383. being read out.

  384. I need you to understand

  385. the seriousness of this

  386. because this church

  387. is going through

  388. some serious problems.

  389. But maybe just a little bit

  390. about Smyrna.

  391. Smyrna is a very

  392. interesting place.

  393. Some people have been

  394. to Izmir.

  395. It's a beautiful city

  396. from what I hear.

  397. And actually,

  398. it was known

  399. to be a beautiful city.

  400. It was known

  401. to be the ornament

  402. of Asia.

  403. So, it's the third

  404. biggest city now

  405. in Turkey completely

  406. but it used to be

  407. the ornament of Asia

  408. or the flower

  409. of Asia.

  410. Known to be

  411. a beautiful city

  412. and it had a lot

  413. of pride in itself.

  414. There were two main

  415. kinds of people

  416. in Smyrna.

  417. There were one,

  418. a group of Jews

  419. and two,

  420. a group of very,

  421. well,

  422. they were called

  423. loyalists,

  424. people who really,

  425. really wanted

  426. to impress

  427. the Roman Empire.

  428. So, these were

  429. the kinds of people

  430. that were there.

  431. And the city

  432. was interesting.

  433. It had the exclusive

  434. rights to myrrh.

  435. Okay?

  436. The fragrance of myrrh.

  437. So, actually,

  438. because of that,

  439. it had a lot of people

  440. going in and out

  441. and it took a lot

  442. of pride in itself.

  443. It's the fragrance,

  444. the flower,

  445. the ornament of Asia.

  446. Actually, on its coins,

  447. it would actually write

  448. the first city of Asia

  449. in size and beauty.

  450. So, it wanted to be

  451. number one.

  452. It wanted to be

  453. known as the best place

  454. in the world

  455. and also most loyal

  456. to the Roman Empire.

  457. So, that's the kind

  458. of context

  459. that he's writing to here

  460. and it's also very famous

  461. for athletic games.

  462. Okay?

  463. So, a lot of contests

  464. happened in Smyrna.

  465. It was a key port.

  466. If you just drew

  467. a line straight

  468. towards the west

  469. from the port of Smyrna,

  470. the first city

  471. it would hit

  472. is Athens.

  473. So, you can imagine

  474. the access

  475. that this place had

  476. and the beauty

  477. that it had

  478. and it still stands today.

  479. You can actually

  480. go and see this place.

  481. At breakfast,

  482. I was talking to my

  483. father-in-law about this

  484. because they'd taken

  485. a whole trip around Turkey,

  486. Asia Minor in the Bible

  487. and this place is beautiful,

  488. he says.

  489. And so, this is what

  490. Paul's writing to now

  491. and, sorry,

  492. what John's writing to

  493. and Jesus himself

  494. introduces as,

  495. these are the words

  496. of the first

  497. and the last

  498. who died

  499. and came to life.

  500. Again, Jesus said this

  501. already in chapter one.

  502. I am the first

  503. and the last.

  504. I am the Alpha

  505. and Omega.

  506. So, this church

  507. that is suffering

  508. through this kind

  509. of persecution,

  510. which by the way

  511. has been happening

  512. throughout the history

  513. of Smyrna,

  514. it was only even

  515. in the early 1900s,

  516. Christians were still

  517. being killed.

  518. My father-in-law

  519. was telling me

  520. about these tunnels

  521. that would be under,

  522. these underground tunnels

  523. that were just complex

  524. and complicated

  525. that were under the city

  526. where a lot of the Christians

  527. were running away

  528. from the persecution.

  529. So, it was that kind

  530. of place.

  531. And can you imagine

  532. hearing the words

  533. of Jesus?

  534. A messenger comes

  535. and says,

  536. Church in Smyrna,

  537. I have a message

  538. for you

  539. from Jesus himself.

  540. And Jesus says,

  541. hey, Smyrna,

  542. I am the first

  543. and the last.

  544. The one who died

  545. and came back to life.

  546. What's he saying there?

  547. He's saying,

  548. I know what you're

  549. going through,

  550. but let me tell you

  551. something.

  552. I'm going to have

  553. the last word.

  554. I'm the Alpha and Omega

  555. and the first and the last.

  556. So, whatever you're

  557. going through in the middle,

  558. it's not the end.

  559. I'm coming back

  560. to have the last word.

  561. And I died

  562. and then came back

  563. to life.

  564. Those in Smyrna

  565. would have really

  566. understood this

  567. because one of the reasons

  568. why this city was so proud

  569. was in 600 BC,

  570. it was completely flattened.

  571. It was completely destroyed.

  572. And then it was

  573. Alexander the Great

  574. that actually built it

  575. back up again

  576. into this beautiful city.

  577. So, the city was known

  578. to be the city

  579. that resurrected,

  580. that it was completely

  581. destroyed and dead

  582. and now is now

  583. back to life

  584. with all its beauty.

  585. Now it's the first city

  586. of Asia

  587. in size and beauty.

  588. Jesus knows this.

  589. He walks amongst

  590. this church

  591. and he says,

  592. I know

  593. your tribulation

  594. and your poverty

  595. but you are rich

  596. and the slander

  597. of those who say

  598. that they are Jews

  599. and are not

  600. but are a synagogue

  601. of Satan.

  602. So this church

  603. is going through some stuff.

  604. It's going through persecution.

  605. It's going through,

  606. it's going to be put in prison.

  607. We're going to read

  608. about that in a bit

  609. and it also is in poverty.

  610. So we're going to break

  611. these down a little bit

  612. and we're going to ask ourselves,

  613. actually,

  614. how did this church survive

  615. till now?

  616. What did they do

  617. that was so right

  618. that they didn't get

  619. any criticism from Jesus?

  620. He just gave them

  621. an encouragement

  622. because I want to know.

  623. I want to know

  624. why that gathering

  625. managed to survive.

  626. So he starts off

  627. by saying this,

  628. I know your tribulation.

  629. Again,

  630. I know.

  631. I am Jesus.

  632. I am walking amongst you.

  633. I know.

  634. That should bring

  635. great comfort.

  636. You know,

  637. when you're going

  638. through a challenge

  639. and someone just puts

  640. their hand on your back

  641. and shoulder

  642. and just go,

  643. I know what you're going through.

  644. Wouldn't that have been

  645. of great comfort?

  646. When someone was reading

  647. this letter out to them,

  648. they would have been

  649. on the edge of their seat

  650. going,

  651. what's Jesus going to say?

  652. He knows we're going

  653. through all this trouble.

  654. What's he going to do?

  655. Maybe now he's going

  656. to come back

  657. and he's going to help us

  658. overthrow the room.

  659. What's he going to do?

  660. Maybe we don't have to be

  661. so scared for our lives anymore.

  662. Maybe our children

  663. can live knowing

  664. that they don't have

  665. to be scared

  666. every time they go out

  667. because they're associated

  668. with us.

  669. He says,

  670. I know your tribulation.

  671. The word there is,

  672. I know your pressure.

  673. I know the pressure

  674. that you're under.

  675. I know what you're going through.

  676. I know the pressure

  677. that you're under.

  678. You see, why?

  679. Those two groups,

  680. there were the Jews

  681. and then there were

  682. the loyalists

  683. to the Roman Empire.

  684. At this point,

  685. as I told you

  686. a couple of weeks ago,

  687. the emperor was starting

  688. to persecute Christians,

  689. really, really raising

  690. the heat to these people

  691. and really trying

  692. to hunt the Christians down.

  693. The Jews, on the other hand,

  694. actually got exemption.

  695. They actually,

  696. they explained to the Romans

  697. that, hey,

  698. we worship Yahweh

  699. and we can't worship Caesar

  700. and all these other things.

  701. So they were actually

  702. given exemption

  703. from doing the worshiping

  704. of the Caesar

  705. at the altars,

  706. in the temples.

  707. But the Christians

  708. were not

  709. because the Christians

  710. were seen as this cultish

  711. small group

  712. that could threaten

  713. to cause problems

  714. in the Roman Empire.

  715. And so therefore,

  716. the Christians

  717. were getting persecuted.

  718. They were getting killed.

  719. They were getting dragged away

  720. and murdered.

  721. Even worse so,

  722. the actual Jews

  723. and the loyalists

  724. were actually

  725. basically grassing them out,

  726. starting to point

  727. where they are,

  728. starting to snitch on them.

  729. So that was the pressure

  730. they were getting under.

  731. You and I,

  732. we all gathered here

  733. in Almutti

  734. this Sunday morning

  735. pretty free of pressure.

  736. We just,

  737. we woke up,

  738. we got out of bed,

  739. we just figured out

  740. how we're going to get here

  741. and we got here.

  742. Imagine that church,

  743. imagine a group

  744. of this size,

  745. but every single person

  746. who came here

  747. was under pressure

  748. because they know

  749. that by coming here,

  750. by being here,

  751. they might actually end up

  752. either killed

  753. or dragged into prison.

  754. That changes things completely.

  755. Right?

  756. We have no threat

  757. of why we're here

  758. right now.

  759. Jesus says,

  760. I know your tribulation.

  761. I know the pressure

  762. that you're under.

  763. And I want us

  764. to be able to feel that.

  765. You know,

  766. when you've been under pressure

  767. and someone just assures you,

  768. I know the pressure

  769. that you're under.

  770. He also said,

  771. I know your poverty.

  772. Something else about

  773. these Christians in Smyrna,

  774. they were poor.

  775. They were poor.

  776. Because of the persecution,

  777. because of the Jews,

  778. because of the loyalists,

  779. they were being discriminated against.

  780. There were sanctions on them

  781. even when they were

  782. doing business.

  783. Imagine a Christian

  784. running a stall,

  785. but people wouldn't go to them

  786. because they were Christians.

  787. So they wouldn't be able

  788. to sell.

  789. They wouldn't be able

  790. to make profits.

  791. So all these Christians

  792. were known to be poor.

  793. Forget being invited

  794. into trade unions.

  795. So this group

  796. were completely sidelined

  797. from society.

  798. So Jesus says,

  799. I know the pressure

  800. that you're under.

  801. I also know

  802. that you are poor.

  803. I know your poverty.

  804. Do you know what Jesus

  805. is saying here?

  806. Jesus is saying,

  807. I know how much it costs you

  808. to be here.

  809. I know how much it costs you

  810. as a businessman

  811. trying to follow

  812. the way of Jesus

  813. in this city

  814. and all the discrimination

  815. that you receive

  816. because of it.

  817. I know that you're poor.

  818. I know that you're not only

  819. worried about your children's safety,

  820. you're also worried

  821. whether you can even

  822. feed your children or not.

  823. Jesus says,

  824. I know.

  825. I know.

  826. Brackets then,

  827. he says,

  828. but you are rich.

  829. He says,

  830. I know your poverty,

  831. but you are rich.

  832. He reminds them actually

  833. that riches are not

  834. just on this earth here,

  835. but there are heavenly riches

  836. that far outweigh,

  837. far outweigh

  838. what they can accumulate

  839. on earth

  840. because from dust

  841. you came

  842. and from dust

  843. you will leave.

  844. And so he says,

  845. hey,

  846. I know that you are poor here,

  847. but know that you are

  848. actually rich.

  849. the spiritual blessings

  850. that you have

  851. far outweigh

  852. the earthly riches

  853. that other people have.

  854. Have you met people,

  855. I mean,

  856. in Hong Kong,

  857. it's the kind of place

  858. where there is just

  859. so much wealth

  860. and there is

  861. such a big gap,

  862. but you know what,

  863. sometimes,

  864. not sometimes,

  865. all the time,

  866. we're reminded

  867. that actually just

  868. because we have money

  869. it doesn't mean

  870. that we're

  871. completely happy.

  872. Right?

  873. Have you met

  874. a rich person

  875. who's really poor?

  876. I have.

  877. A rich person

  878. who is really poor.

  879. Actually,

  880. I had a friend of mine

  881. who's a CEO

  882. of a big bank

  883. and he said,

  884. you know what,

  885. it's interesting,

  886. the more money you get,

  887. the more poor they feel.

  888. The more money people get,

  889. the more poor they feel.

  890. People who have loads of money,

  891. somehow when he's talking to them,

  892. it still sounds like they're poor.

  893. Have you met people

  894. who are rich

  895. but actually poor?

  896. I've also met people

  897. who are poor

  898. who are actually rich.

  899. Last year,

  900. I went to Nairobi

  901. in Africa

  902. and I was just

  903. blown away

  904. by the joy

  905. that these kids have

  906. because one kid

  907. got handed down

  908. a hand-me-down

  909. pair of rollerblades

  910. and the joy

  911. that the whole community

  912. had for that one kid,

  913. I'm like,

  914. you can't,

  915. there is no price

  916. you could pay for that.

  917. The joy,

  918. I've met rich people

  919. who are poor

  920. and I've met poor people

  921. who are rich.

  922. Jesus says,

  923. I know your poverty

  924. but remember,

  925. you are rich

  926. because you have

  927. every spiritual blessing

  928. because you know

  929. you need me

  930. and you know

  931. that I am all you need.

  932. That's what he's saying.

  933. Again,

  934. imagine yourself

  935. being in that church.

  936. You're going through

  937. all this pressure.

  938. You have no money.

  939. You don't know

  940. what you're going to eat tomorrow

  941. and you get this letter

  942. from Jesus

  943. and Jesus says,

  944. I know,

  945. I know

  946. and I am with you.

  947. The encouragement

  948. that he would have got

  949. from that.

  950. And then it says

  951. something interesting

  952. and the slander of those

  953. who say that they are Jews

  954. and are not

  955. but are a synagogue of Satan.

  956. You're getting slandered.

  957. People are spreading

  958. rumors about you.

  959. You're trying to run

  960. an honest business here

  961. and people are spreading

  962. rumors about your business.

  963. You're trying to run

  964. an honest gathering here

  965. and people are spreading

  966. rumors about what is happening

  967. at this gathering.

  968. And Jesus says,

  969. I know

  970. and these people,

  971. they're pretending to be Jews

  972. so they get the exemptions

  973. from the Roman Empire

  974. but they're not.

  975. They're a synagogue of Satan.

  976. Whoa.

  977. Stop right there.

  978. Jesus introduced himself

  979. in chapter 1

  980. and now he introduces

  981. the main villain

  982. in chapter 2.

  983. They're a synagogue

  984. of Satan

  985. meaning the adversary,

  986. the enemy.

  987. A synagogue of Satan

  988. means these people,

  989. they say they're Jews

  990. but they're fake.

  991. Instead of serving

  992. God's purposes,

  993. they're actually serving

  994. the devil's purposes.

  995. and throughout

  996. the whole history

  997. of mankind

  998. we see the devil working,

  999. stirring up the hearts

  1000. of men

1001. to fight against each other,

  1002. stirring up the hearts

  1003. of men

  1004. to turn away

  1005. from God.

1006. We see the main villain

  1007. in the story now

1008. and it is the devil.

  1009. It is Satan.

  1010. It brings me something

  1011. that actually brings me

  1012. encouragement

1013. when I feel as though

  1014. I'm fighting

  1015. and losing battle.

  1016. Man,

  1017. there's something,

  1018. Paul talks about this.

  1019. What we fight against

  1020. isn't just against

  1021. flesh and blood.

  1022. It isn't just against

  1023. what we see.

  1024. There is a force

1025. behind that we can't see

  1026. that we're up against.

  1027. The church in Smyrna,

  1028. sitting where you are

  1029. right now almost

1030. and sitting the way you are

  1031. would have heard this

  1032. and would know exactly

  1033. what he's talking about.

  1034. Man,

  1035. Jesus knows the pressure

  1036. that we're under.

1037. Jesus knows that we are

1038. struggling from day to day,

  1039. that our businesses

  1040. are really struggling.

  1041. In this city,

  1042. this first city

  1043. of beauty and size,

  1044. this fragrance,

  1045. flower of Asia,

  1046. we are suffering

  1047. and Jesus knows.

1048. The question for us is,

  1049. do we have any

1050. of that kind of pressure?

  1051. Jesus then carries on.

  1052. He says,

1053. I know all these things

  1054. and then he says,

  1055. don't be afraid

  1056. of what you're about

  1057. to suffer.

  1058. And then he says,

  1059. behold,

1060. some of you are going

1061. to be thrown into prison.

  1062. The devil is going

1063. to throw you into prison.

  1064. Verse 10,

  1065. do not fear

1066. what you're about to suffer.

  1067. Behold,

  1068. the devil is about

1069. to throw some of you

  1070. into prison

1071. that you may be tested.

  1072. He's saying,

1073. some of you are suffering

  1074. right now

  1075. and you're going

1076. to be thrown into prison.

  1077. The main enemy here

  1078. is the devil.

  1079. And you're going

1080. to be thrown into prison

1081. so that you may be tested.

  1082. Now,

  1083. nothing happens to us

  1084. without God's say so.

  1085. I mean,

1086. that song that we sang,

1087. that he's sovereign over us.

  1088. He's completely

  1089. in control here.

  1090. And Jesus says,

  1091. hey,

  1092. I know the struggles

  1093. that you're going through

  1094. and I'm about to,

1095. what I'm about to say

  1096. is that actually

1097. it's about to get worse.

  1098. You're going to be

  1099. thrown into prison.

1100. Some of you are going

1101. to be thrown into prison

  1102. and you're going

  1103. to be tested

  1104. because when you're

  1105. going to be tested,

  1106. that's when you know

  1107. whether this is something

  1108. real or not.

  1109. My question is,

  1110. how many of us

  1111. have been tested?

  1112. So,

  1113. the missions organization

  1114. I work for here

  1115. in Hong Kong

  1116. is called Young Life.

  1117. Young Life

  1118. is in 104

  1119. countries around the world.

1120. And a couple of weeks ago

1121. we met some of the colleagues

  1122. that we have

  1123. from different parts

  1124. of the world.

  1125. Some of them

  1126. can't call themselves

  1127. Young Life.

1128. They have to call themselves

  1129. something different

  1130. because the countries

  1131. that they operate in

  1132. don't allow Christians

  1133. to work.

  1134. There are others

  1135. who are very scared

  1136. and weary

  1137. of even Zoom calls

1138. that they can jump on.

1139. There are so many things

1140. that they have to consider.

  1141. This isn't that far

  1142. from home, people.

  1143. It reminds me

  1144. that actually

  1145. I don't think

  1146. I've ever

  1147. gone under

  1148. that kind of pressure.

1149. I grew up in England,

1150. same place as Gab's grew up.

  1151. Did you go,

1152. did you have any pressure

  1153. going to church?

  1154. Apart from just mum

  1155. forcing you to church.

  1156. That was the only,

1157. that was the only pressure

  1158. you got, right?

  1159. Like,

  1160. you don't wonder,

1161. oh, if I make this choice today,

1162. this could be my last choice.

  1163. We don't,

1164. we don't really have that.

  1165. We don't have that

1166. in Hong Kong right now.

  1167. But it's something interesting.

  1168. When you are threatened,

  1169. when you are tested,

  1170. that's when you know

  1171. it's real or not.

  1172. I mean,

1173. we all hate tests, right?

  1174. Students,

  1175. who loves tests?

  1176. No one loves tests.

  1177. Florence,

  1178. dentist,

  1179. does not like tests.

1180. But have you had tests?

  1181. Lots of them.

  1182. You see,

  1183. Florence is a dentist,

  1184. by the way.

  1185. But if I had a dentist

  1186. or a doctor

1187. that I go and visit

  1188. and they say,

  1189. James,

  1190. sit on this,

  1191. sit on the chair

  1192. and open your mouth.

1193. And if I ask them,

  1194. oh,

1195. have you ever gone through

  1196. any education

  1197. or been tested?

  1198. They're like,

  1199. no.

1200. I would not feel confident

  1201. in opening my mouth.

  1202. There's something about tests

  1203. that are actually good.

  1204. There's something about tests

  1205. that actually show

  1206. whether someone actually knows

  1207. what they're talking about

  1208. or not.

  1209. I had a bad back

  1210. the other week

  1211. and I went to

  1212. Damo here,

  1213. who's,

  1214. again,

  1215. I've said this before,

  1216. he's the best chiropractor

  1217. I know.

  1218. He's the only chiropractor

  1219. I know.

  1220. And he sits me

  1221. in these big machines.

  1222. It's literally like

  1223. they're time machines.

  1224. And I'm like,

  1225. Damian,

1226. where am I going to wake up?

  1227. Can it be ancient?

  1228. I'd be really worried.

  1229. Some of the stuff

  1230. he does to me,

1231. if he wasn't ever tested,

1232. then I'd be really worried.

1233. But because he is tested,

1234. because he has been tested,

  1235. I'm like,

  1236. okay,

1237. he knows what he's doing.

  1238. The question I have

1239. to ask to you is,

  1240. has your faith

  1241. ever been tested?

1242. How strong is your faith?

1243. If someone comes against you

1244. and your faith right now,

  1245. will it completely will

1246. or will it still stand strong?

  1247. What Jesus seems

  1248. to be saying here

  1249. is that,

  1250. guys,

1251. you're going to end up

  1252. in prison

1253. that you may be tested

  1254. because when you're tested,

  1255. we're going to see

  1256. whether your faith

  1257. is real or not.

1258. When the going gets tough.

1259. When the going gets tough.

  1260. See,

  1261. Jesus knows

1262. this is not going to happen.

  1263. The problem is

  1264. he's not bringing relief.

  1265. He's not saying,

  1266. hey,

  1267. I know you're going

  1268. through your pressure.

  1269. I know the poverty,

  1270. but don't worry.

  1271. I'm coming.

  1272. I got your back

  1273. and soon you're going

  1274. to be king.

  1275. Soon you're going

  1276. to rule with me.

  1277. No.

  1278. He's saying,

  1279. hey,

  1280. don't be afraid

  1281. of what you're about

  1282. to suffer.

  1283. Some of you

  1284. are going to be

  1285. thrown into prison

1286. so that you may be tested.

  1287. And then he says,

  1288. and for 10 days

  1289. you will have tribulation.

  1290. 10 days.

  1291. What they would have

  1292. understood that to mean

  1293. is this will be

1294. a short amount of time.

  1295. You're going to be

  1296. put in prison.

1297. You're going to go through

  1298. all the trouble.

1299. But let me tell you

  1300. that it's 10 days

  1301. in the sense that

1302. it is a limited amount

  1303. of time.

1304. There will be an end to it.

  1305. Do you know

  1306. when you're sick

1307. or when you have COVID?

  1308. Well,

  1309. before it was like,

  1310. oh,

  1311. you're going to be

  1312. pretty much out

  1313. for about 10 days.

1314. And in those 10 days

  1315. it is painful.

1316. You've got your sore throat,

  1317. you've got your fever,

  1318. all the stigma

  1319. so you're not allowed

  1320. to see anyone,

  1321. do anyone,

  1322. you can lock yourself

  1323. in the room,

  1324. but it's 10 days.

  1325. If you've had COVID

  1326. you'll understand this

  1327. in the sense that

  1328. it's really bad

1329. when you're going through it

1330. but you look back now

  1331. and it's like,

  1332. oh yeah,

1333. it really was just 10 days.

  1334. Don't we have that?

  1335. That's exactly what

1336. kind of Jesus is implying here.

  1337. He's saying,

  1338. don't be afraid

1339. of what you're about to suffer.

  1340. The devil's going to

  1341. throw you into prison

1342. so you're going to be tested

1343. and you're going to be there

  1344. for 10 days

1345. and you're going to have tribulation.

  1346. What that means is

1347. it may feel quite a lot

  1348. in those 10 days

1349. but when you look back

  1350. in the future

1351. it's going to be okay.

1352. It was only a short amount

  1353. of time.

  1354. What it's saying is

  1355. it is capped.

  1356. The suffering

  1357. is capped.

  1358. It is limited.

  1359. Why?

  1360. Because he's the first

  1361. and the last.

  1362. Because he will have

  1363. the final say.

  1364. That's what he's saying here.

  1365. He's saying,

  1366. don't worry,

  1367. it will happen.

  1368. But it's okay.

1369. Don't bow under the pressure.

  1370. So the questions

  1371. that I have

1372. as I got through this is

  1373. actually,

  1374. does my life

  1375. have any pressure?

  1376. Does my faith

  1377. ever get tested?

  1378. Now,

1379. I'll say coming to Hong Kong

1380. was probably my biggest test.

  1381. It challenged the way

  1382. I thought about God.

  1383. Challenged the way

  1384. I thought about

  1385. what churches.

  1386. I think I'd go as far

  1387. as to say that

  1388. maybe I didn't really

  1389. understand what it meant

  1390. to follow Jesus

  1391. until I actually

  1392. followed him

  1393. to a place

  1394. that I

1395. didn't really want to go.

  1396. I asked this question

  1397. two weeks ago.

  1398. Is Jesus your Lord

  1399. and Saviour?

  1400. Then I asked you

1401. if your answer was yes,

  1402. show me which part

  1403. of your life

  1404. where Jesus

  1405. is actually Lord.

  1406. I think I only really

  1407. learned that recently.

  1408. But if you're going

  1409. to follow Jesus,

  1410. you're basically saying

1411. I'm going to follow you

  1412. wherever you want me

  1413. to go.

  1414. Here's the problem.

  1415. The Christian life

  1416. when lived properly

  1417. invites pressure.

  1418. The Christian life

  1419. when lived properly

  1420. invites pressure.

  1421. Why?

  1422. Because the way

  1423. of Jesus

  1424. is

  1425. by definition

  1426. going against

1427. the way of the world.

  1428. Romans 12

  1429. is do not conform

  1430. to the patterns

  1431. of this world.

1432. So if you're going to

  1433. live this life

  1434. properly,

  1435. it does invite

  1436. pressure.

  1437. Let me just pause

  1438. there for a second.

  1439. for those of us

  1440. who don't experience

  1441. any pressure,

  1442. that should give us

  1443. some food for thought.

  1444. Are you tracking

  1445. with me here?

  1446. Does your life

  1447. have any pressure

  1448. because of

  1449. the faith

  1450. that you have?

  1451. If it doesn't,

  1452. in the politest

  1453. way possible,

  1454. my question is

  1455. why not?

  1456. the Christian life

  1457. when lived properly

  1458. invites pressure

  1459. because we are

  1460. counter-cultural.

  1461. I've often said this,

  1462. if

  1463. the Christian life

  1464. doesn't cost you

  1465. anything,

  1466. it's not worth

  1467. anything.

  1468. If the Christian life

  1469. that you live

  1470. doesn't cost you

  1471. anything,

  1472. then it's not worth

  1473. anything.

  1474. The Christian life

  1475. when lived properly

  1476. invites pressure.

  1477. These people

  1478. will have had

  1479. to make choices.

  1480. Some of them,

  1481. he says,

  1482. they're fake Jews,

  1483. right?

1484. That means some of them

  1485. had decided,

  1486. you know what?

  1487. If it's easier

1488. to pretend to be a Jew

  1489. so I can avoid

  1490. some of the issues,

1491. I'm just going to do that.

  1492. If it's easier

1493. for me to do this

1494. or not talk about Jesus,

1495. then I'm going to do that

1496. because that will help me

  1497. have an easier life.

  1498. And so people

  1499. started making compromises.

  1500. That's what was happening.

  1501. But then the ones

  1502. that were remaining

  1503. was,

  1504. Jesus says,

  1505. hey,

  1506. I know what you're

  1507. going through

1508. and you will have pressure

1509. but I want you to know

  1510. that pressure is good

  1511. because that means

  1512. your faith is real.

1513. The last thing I want

  1514. is to make compromises

  1515. that do not really

  1516. have a real faith.

1517. And when I get to the author

  1518. of all of this,

  1519. the creator,

  1520. he's like,

  1521. hey,

1522. what you had wasn't real.

  1523. Does your life

  1524. invite any pressure?

1525. If you're living your life

  1526. exactly the way

  1527. you want it to,

  1528. I'm happy for you,

  1529. bro,

  1530. but I don't know

  1531. if it's Jesus

  1532. you're following.

  1533. If you're doing

1534. exactly what you want to,

  1535. of course there's things

  1536. that you don't like.

  1537. You don't like floods,

  1538. you don't like typhoons,

  1539. you don't like tests,

  1540. you don't like taxes,

1541. I get all those things.

1542. But if on the whole

  1543. your life is going

1544. how you want it to,

  1545. maybe you're the Lord

  1546. of your life.

  1547. Maybe Jesus isn't Lord

  1548. because when it's lived

  1549. properly,

  1550. it should invite pressure.

  1551. There should be people

  1552. who look at you

  1553. and go,

  1554. oh,

  1555. why is your day

  1556. living like that?

  1557. Like,

  1558. that's,

  1559. that's not normal.

  1560. Shouldn't we be

  1561. in control

  1562. of our own destiny?

  1563. No,

  1564. not when Jesus

  1565. is your Lord.

  1566. Does your life

  1567. invite any pressure?

  1568. And I'm not saying

  1569. we should go out

  1570. and look for trouble

  1571. right now.

  1572. That's not what we're saying.

  1573. Like,

1574. you don't need to go

1575. and find a big wooden board

  1576. and stand outside

  1577. in the street

  1578. and go repent

1579. for the kingdom of God

  1580. is near.

1581. You don't need to do

  1582. that.

1583. You can if you want to.

  1584. But,

  1585. but actually,

  1586. if you're living

  1587. for Jesus,

  1588. it should go against

1589. the way of the world

  1590. and there should,

  1591. there should be pressure.

1592. There should be a way

  1593. of,

  1594. actually,

  1595. you do things differently.

1596. Not just for the sake of it,

  1597. but because your Lord

  1598. demands it.

  1599. I was listening to a sermon

  1600. earlier this week

1601. where the guy was saying,

  1602. Jesus,

  1603. do you recognize,

  1604. do you realize

  1605. that Jesus died

  1606. for you?

  1607. I mean,

  1608. I know it's that,

  1609. okay,

  1610. everyone's like,

  1611. yeah,

  1612. yeah,

  1613. I get it,

  1614. I get it.

  1615. Jesus,

  1616. someone died for you.

  1617. Do you think

  1618. the most appropriate

  1619. response after that

  1620. is,

  1621. oh,

  1622. go to church

  1623. on Sunday

  1624. for two hours?

  1625. Is that it?

1626. Is that what Jesus wanted?

1627. I wanted to lay my life

  1628. down for these people

1629. just so they make sure

  1630. they can carve out

  1631. their Sunday mornings

  1632. for me

  1633. and so long as

1634. they don't come to church

  1635. too late,

1636. it's going to be okay.

  1637. Jesus laid his life

  1638. down for us.

  1639. Is there any pressure

  1640. in our lives?

  1641. Maybe another question

  1642. that we have is,

  1643. what are the pressures

  1644. that we face

  1645. in this society?

  1646. I don't think

  1647. we are persecuted

  1648. in business

  1649. for being Christians here,

  1650. but what are some

  1651. of the pressures

  1652. that we face

  1653. in society right now?

  1654. Any thoughts?

  1655. I'm going to start

  1656. putting people

  1657. on the spot here

1658. just to keep us awake.

  1659. What are the pressures

1660. that we have in Hong Kong

1661. right now that you think?

  1662. JP, anything?

  1663. Rent.

  1664. Yes.

  1665. That is a pressure.

  1666. Let's unpeel that

  1667. a bit more.

  1668. What does that represent

1669. or what does that cause

  1670. after that?

  1671. The pressure of rent

  1672. leads to the pressure

  1673. of...

1674. Rent leads to the pressure

  1675. of working

  1676. to get more money

  1677. so you can pay

  1678. your landlord

  1679. and that

  1680. then leads pressure

  1681. onto something else.

  1682. What would that lead

  1683. onto?

  1684. Having to work lots

  1685. means then

  1686. there's a pressure

  1687. of time.

1688. One thing I've got to say

1689. is when I met those

  1690. poor kids

  1691. who were rich

  1692. in Africa,

  1693. I was like,

  1694. at least one thing

  1695. they do have

  1696. that is the most

  1697. valuable thing.

  1698. Time.

1699. The kids in Hong Kong,

  1700. some of them

  1701. that I meet,

  1702. they have everything

  1703. but time.

  1704. And time

  1705. is the most

  1706. valuable thing.

  1707. So yes,

  1708. the pressure of rent

  1709. leads to this

  1710. and so therefore

  1711. you have to work.

  1712. So therefore you have

1713. to use all your time

  1714. to get that

  1715. so you can pay

  1716. for rent,

  1717. pay for someone

  1718. to live.

  1719. What if the pressures

  1720. are there?

  1721. Graceful pressures

1722. are there in Hong Kong.

  1723. You have to look

  1724. like you're successful.

  1725. You have to appear

  1726. to be successful.

  1727. You have to appear

  1728. to be ambitious.

  1729. You have to appear

1730. to know what you're doing.

  1731. To be attractive

  1732. in the way

  1733. so people can look

  1734. at you

  1735. for attention.

  1736. And we all know

  1737. that that's just a facade

  1738. and this is where

  1739. social media

  1740. is the biggest problem,

  1741. right?

  1742. I mean,

  1743. social media itself

  1744. is a neutral thing

1745. but what it lends itself

  1746. to is everyone

  1747. just showing

  1748. their most successful

  1749. side

  1750. and then completely

  1751. filtering out

  1752. everything else.

  1753. And then now

  1754. we're all comparing

  1755. everyone,

  1756. like their successful

1757. side to our ugly side

  1758. and then we feel

  1759. worse and worse.

  1760. And I've said this

1761. to a lot of young people

  1762. recently.

  1763. So actually,

  1764. we were just talking

1765. about this the other day.

  1766. I don't have Instagram

1767. and Facebook on my phone.

1768. The director of Young Life

  1769. with young people

  1770. does not have Instagram

  1771. on his phone

1772. and I was laughed at

  1773. yesterday

1774. and I'll tell you why.

  1775. I realized

1776. when I was on my phone

  1777. scrolling,

  1778. zombie scrolling

  1779. through Instagram,

  1780. I was feeling FOMO.

  1781. Like,

  1782. fear of missing out.

  1783. I was feeling like,

  1784. oh,

  1785. wait,

  1786. they're at a party.

  1787. Why aren't I

  1788. invited to that?

  1789. Oh,

  1790. they live there?

  1791. That's super nice.

  1792. Look at that

  1793. matcha latte

  1794. that they're drinking

  1795. in Bali.

  1796. Oh,

  1797. that's so nice.

  1798. That barrister,

  1799. seriously.

  1800. I found myself

  1801. grown-ass man James

  1802. with a wife

  1803. and two kids

  1804. whom I love

  1805. in a beautiful home

  1806. that I have.

  1807. I have everything

1808. that I could possibly want.

  1809. I'm scrolling on Instagram

  1810. and I'm like,

  1811. but I need more.

  1812. Literally.

  1813. And I'm like,

  1814. you know what?

1815. This ain't good for me.

  1816. Now,

  1817. I still need to

  1818. be somewhat connected

  1819. to the world

  1820. so I choose to

  1821. go there

1822. only when I'm on my laptop

1823. and I'm going to decide,

  1824. okay,

  1825. I'm going to spend

1826. a little bit of time

1827. to go and check out

  1828. what's actually happening

  1829. in the world.

  1830. And then I realize

  1831. that nothing is happening

  1832. in the world.

  1833. It's the same thing

  1834. every time.

1835. It really is the same thing.

  1836. I'm like,

1837. I've been on social media

  1838. for Lent sometimes

  1839. and I come back

  1840. and I'm like,

  1841. oh,

  1842. nothing has changed.

  1843. I didn't actually need

  1844. to know about

  1845. everyone else's holidays

  1846. and everyone else's

  1847. plans.

  1848. But the pressure

  1849. of just

  1850. getting attention

  1851. from people,

  1852. from presenting

  1853. ourselves

  1854. in the right way

  1855. so other people

  1856. will like us,

  1857. that's a huge pressure.

  1858. What other pressures

  1859. are there?

  1860. Maybe one more.

  1861. Anything else?

  1862. Can anyone

  1863. think of anything?

  1864. Job title?

  1865. Absolutely.

  1866. It's part of this.

  1867. It's like,

  1868. oh,

  1869. what's your name

1870. and what do you do?

  1871. What's your name?

  1872. Oh,

  1873. what do you do?

  1874. What's your name

1875. and what do you do?

  1876. Why?

  1877. Because we,

  1878. well,

  1879. one,

  1880. we profile people

  1881. ourselves.

1882. We find out the name.

  1883. We almost don't even

1884. need to know the name.

1885. We just need to know

  1886. what they do

1887. because then we need to

  1888. decide whether we want

1889. to hang out with them

  1890. or not,

  1891. right?

  1892. When you meet someone,

  1893. John,

  1894. you meet people

  1895. all the time.

  1896. Like,

  1897. actually,

1898. I know you have this

  1899. because I know I have this.

1900. When I'm speaking to people,

  1901. I'm like,

1902. I need to quickly profile

  1903. whether this person

  1904. deserves my time

  1905. or not.

  1906. So it starts up,

  1907. hey,

  1908. what do you do?

  1909. Oh,

  1910. actually,

  1911. forget the name.

  1912. Just,

  1913. what do you do?

  1914. Job title.

  1915. We hold that

1916. in such high regard here.

  1917. But I'm like,

1918. there's so many other parts of it.

  1919. That's why I hate being called

  1920. Pastor James

  1921. because I'm like,

  1922. I don't come and call you

  1923. by your job title

  1924. and then your name.

  1925. Hey,

  1926. hey,

  1927. event manager,

  1928. Gabs.

1929. How are you doing today?

  1930. Hey,

  1931. dentist flow.

  1932. Hey,

  1933. back genius demo.

  1934. No,

  1935. it's just demo.

  1936. But somehow,

  1937. our job titles,

  1938. somehow what we do

  1939. put so much pressure

  1940. onto us.

  1941. Sometimes,

1942. it's not even from other people.

1943. We just have it ourselves.

1944. What am I doing with my life?

  1945. Why aren't I

  1946. a C-suite

  1947. member of the team?

  1948. Yeah.

  1949. Why aren't I a director?

  1950. Why aren't I this?

  1951. Why aren't I that?

  1952. Why don't I have

  1953. all these followers?

1954. The pressure of job titles.

1955. I've got to say that,

  1956. I mean,

1957. those are all very real things.

1958. Those are all very real things

  1959. that actually cannot just

1960. derail our life here on earth.

  1961. It can threaten

  1962. whether we actually

1963. end up in eternity or not.

  1964. I don't want to belittle them.

1965. But I've also got to say,

1966. they don't really weigh up

1967. to some of the pressures

1968. that the church in Smyrna had.

  1969. It's different.

1970. None of us right now,

1971. right here in this moment,

1972. are going to be thrown

1973. into prison by the devil.

  1974. Well,

1975. unless you're about to do

  1976. something illegal,

  1977. then don't do it.

  1978. Don't do it.

1979. Whatever you think you're doing,

  1980. don't do it.

  1981. The Christian life,

  1982. when lived properly,

  1983. invites pressure.

  1984. I encourage you.

  1985. I invite you.

1986. If your life has no pressure,

  1987. if your faith doesn't

  1988. cause you to rub

1989. against the world in any way,

  1990. I don't know.

1991. I think you need to have a think

1992. of what that faith is.

  1993. If your life,

  1994. if your faith doesn't

  1995. cost you anything,

  1996. I don't know whether

  1997. it's worth anything.

1998. I'm trying to say that

1999. in the nicest way possible.

  2000. But it's important

2001. for us to remember that.

  2002. Conforming to society

  2003. is the biggest thing.

2004. I'm trying to beef up

  2005. past EVs,

  2006. but whereas that song

  2007. that we sang,

2008. I think it was last week

  2009. or two weeks ago,

2010. I've decided to follow Jesus.

  2011. No turning back.

  2012. The cross before me,

  2013. the world behind me.

  2014. No turning back.

  2015. That's the hard thing.

  2016. Anyway,

  2017. just about that test.

2018. I think all of us

  2019. are going through tests

  2020. to some degree.

2021. What is that bringing out in you?

2022. Tell you what it does in me.

  2023. Whenever something

  2024. doesn't go my way,

  2025. and I've got kids,

2026. so things rarely ever go my way,

  2027. it actually exposes

  2028. how I feel.

  2029. It exposes

  2030. what my God is

  2031. when I'm not able

  2032. to do the things

  2033. that I want.

  2034. Or when even just

  2035. doing something like this,

  2036. I'm like,

  2037. oh, this is this.

  2038. It exposes my heart,

  2039. my pleasure.

  2040. Sorry, Florence.

2041. I keep moving this around.

2042. The test that you're facing,

  2043. sometimes it helps

  2044. just to remind yourself

  2045. it is a test.

  2046. Whatever you're going through

  2047. right now

  2048. that is not good.

  2049. Maybe you've got a child

  2050. that's really giving you

  2051. lots of problems.

2052. Maybe you have a spouse.

2053. Maybe you have a girlfriend.

2054. Maybe you have a job

  2055. that is causing you

  2056. lots of problems.

  2057. I find it helpful

2058. sometimes just to remind myself

  2059. this is a test.

  2060. Through this,

  2061. I can see

  2062. whether my faith

  2063. actually stands up properly

  2064. or not.

  2065. Whether it's actually

  2066. a real deal

  2067. or not.

  2068. Whether it actually

  2069. means something

  2070. or not.

  2071. Remind yourself,

  2072. whatever you're going through,

  2073. this is a test

2074. and you will go through it

  2075. for 10 days

  2076. for a limited time.

  2077. But Jesus does not

2078. give relief to those things,

2079. not on this side of heaven.

  2080. Because then he says,

  2081. don't fear what you're

  2082. about to suffer.

  2083. Be faithful

  2084. unto death.

  2085. He says,

  2086. I know you're going

  2087. through all this trouble.

  2088. I know that you're poor.

2089. I know that you have no money.

  2090. I know that you're about

2091. to be thrown into prison.

2092. I'm here to tell you

  2093. even if you die,

  2094. it's okay.

  2095. That's basically

  2096. what he's saying.

  2097. Be faithful

  2098. unto death.

  2099. Now this

  2100. concerns me

  2101. because most of us

  2102. are most afraid

  2103. of dying.

  2104. I mean,

  2105. why do we have

  2106. the pressure

  2107. of paying rent?

  2108. I guess it's because

2109. we don't want to live,

  2110. have nowhere to live.

  2111. I mean,

  2112. if you keep tracing

2113. all of the fears back,

  2114. it's this ultimate fear

  2115. of death.

2116. And Jesus is kind of

  2117. challenging it straight on

  2118. and saying,

  2119. be faithful

  2120. unto death.

  2121. There is no relief

  2122. coming right now.

  2123. Be faithful

  2124. unto death.

  2125. This attempt

  2126. to crush you

  2127. to death

  2128. is going to release

  2129. a fragrance

  2130. of life.

2131. That is what he's saying.

  2132. These attempts

  2133. to crush you

  2134. to death,

  2135. Church of Smyrna,

  2136. will release

  2137. a fragrance

  2138. of life

  2139. that cannot be defeated.

  2140. Can you imagine

  2141. if you were in

  2142. that place,

  2143. going through

  2144. the trouble

  2145. that you're going through,

  2146. people outside

  2147. slandering you,

  2148. sharing gossip

  2149. about you,

  2150. telling their other people

  2151. not to come and

  2152. visit your shop

2153. so you have no money

  2154. to feed your kids

  2155. so they don't go

  2156. to the school

  2157. that you want them

  2158. to go to?

  2159. And Jesus is saying,

  2160. be faithful

  2161. unto death.

  2162. That attempt

  2163. to crush you,

  2164. the devil is going

2165. to try and drag you

  2166. into prison.

  2167. Even if you die,

  2168. be faithful

  2169. unto death.

  2170. That attempt

  2171. to crush you

  2172. to death

  2173. will release

  2174. a fragrance

  2175. of life.

  2176. Wouldn't that lift you

  2177. if you were

  2178. in that position?

  2179. And he says this,

  2180. and this is where

  2181. his encouragement

  2182. comes because

  2183. it's not all

  2184. bad news.

  2185. Be faithful

  2186. unto death

  2187. and I will

  2188. give you

  2189. the crown

  2190. of life.

  2191. So the symbol

  2192. of Smyrna

  2193. was a crown

  2194. and not a crown

  2195. as a king

  2196. but like a victory

  2197. wreath

  2198. that you'd see

  2199. for let's say

  2200. the Olympic Games.

  2201. It was that kind

  2202. of crown.

  2203. And bear in mind

  2204. that these Christians

  2205. in Smyrna

  2206. would never be entitled

  2207. to anything like this.

  2208. They were the bottom

  2209. of society.

  2210. They were sidelined

  2211. completely.

  2212. So no crowns,

  2213. no victory wreaths

  2214. around their heads.

2215. And yet Jesus is saying

  2216. if you be faithful

  2217. unto death

  2218. I will give you

  2219. the crown of life.

  2220. Why?

  2221. What is that?

  2222. That is the victory.

2223. I said at the beginning

2224. if you were to sum up

  2225. this whole book

  2226. of Revelation

  2227. which is massively confusing

2228. and we're going to try

2229. our best to go through it

  2230. to learn as much

2231. as we can about Jesus

2232. but if you're going to

  2233. take away one thing

  2234. in this whole series

  2235. it's that two words.

  2236. Jesus wins.

  2237. Jesus wins.

  2238. And he says

  2239. if you are faithful

  2240. unto death

  2241. I will give you

  2242. the crown

  2243. of life.

  2244. Why?

  2245. Because I

  2246. win.

  2247. And then he tells

2248. you a little bit more

  2249. verse 11

2250. He who has an ear

  2251. let him hear

  2252. what the Spirit

  2253. says to the churches

  2254. the one who conquers

  2255. will not be hurt

  2256. by the second death.

  2257. He's saying

  2258. just imagine

  2259. we're all the church

  2260. in Smyrna.

  2261. He's saying

  2262. I know that you're

  2263. going through

  2264. all the stuff

  2265. that you're going through.

  2266. I know that

  2267. despite all that pressure

  2268. you've not folded.

  2269. you've not compromised.

  2270. You're still here

  2271. and you've got your

2272. poverty to show for it.

2273. And it's going to get worse

  2274. but be faithful

  2275. unto death

2276. and I will give you

  2277. the crown of life

2278. to the one who conquers

  2279. will not be hurt

  2280. by the second death.

  2281. Wait.

  2282. There's a second death.

  2283. What's the second death?

  2284. The first death

  2285. is the one that

  2286. we will all face.

  2287. Of old age

  2288. whatever it might be

  2289. an accident

  2290. whatever it might be

  2291. we all die.

  2292. That's something

  2293. that we all have

2294. to come to terms with.

  2295. Something that sometimes

  2296. is very hard

2297. to come to terms with.

  2298. Maybe if you know

  2299. someone that you've loved

  2300. who has anyone

2301. put your hand up here

  2302. if you know someone

  2303. who you've loved

  2304. who you've lost.

  2305. Does anyone?

  2306. Okay.

  2307. If you've lost someone

  2308. that you've loved

  2309. then you know

  2310. what death is.

  2311. you know that

  2312. that person was here

  2313. and then that person

  2314. was gone.

  2315. And you'll have heard

2316. Joe and I share our story

  2317. about how that happened

  2318. with our dad.

  2319. And the grandparents

  2320. and the uncles

  2321. and aunties

  2322. it's a part of life.

2323. But for those of you

  2324. maybe fortunate

2325. if not yet to experience it

  2326. maybe this isn't

  2327. on your mind.

  2328. Maybe you don't think

  2329. about this that much.

2330. So you don't even think

  2331. about the first death

2332. let alone the second death.

2333. But I want you to know

2334. that the people in this book

  2335. they're thinking about

  2336. both of those deaths

  2337. because this could happen

  2338. to them.

  2339. We don't experience this

2340. so it's very hard for us

  2341. to understand what this

  2342. even means and feels.

  2343. But he's saying here

  2344. you will be hurt

  2345. by the first death

2346. just like all of us here

  2347. we will all die.

  2348. But to the one

  2349. who conquers

2350. you will not be hurt

  2351. by the second death.

  2352. The first death

  2353. is the one where

  2354. we leave this planet.

  2355. The second death

  2356. is the one

  2357. where we are separated

  2358. from God forever.

  2359. The first death

  2360. is the one where

  2361. we leave this planet.

  2362. The second death

  2363. is the one where

  2364. we are separated

  2365. from God forever.

2366. But you will not be hurt

2367. by it if you hang on.

  2368. If you are faithful

  2369. unto the end

  2370. if you trust me.

  2371. There's a quote

  2372. from a theologian

  2373. who says

2374. those who are born once

  2375. die twice.

2376. Those who are born twice

  2377. die once.

2378. Let me just say that again.

2379. Those who are born once

  2380. die twice.

2381. Those who are born twice

  2382. die once.

  2383. Jesus is talking to

  2384. a Pharisee called Nicodemus

2385. and he was telling him

  2386. hey if you want

  2387. eternal life

  2388. you're going to have

  2389. to be born again.

2390. And this old man is like

2391. what do you mean born again?

  2392. That's impossible.

2393. You want me to climb back

  2394. into my mother's womb?

  2395. But the truth is

  2396. when you decide

  2397. to follow Jesus

  2398. what you're saying is

2399. I'm going to die to myself.

  2400. It is no longer

  2401. I who live

  2402. but Christ who lives

  2403. in me.

2404. And I'm going to be born again

2405. and I'm going to live

  2406. completely for him.

2407. And those who are born twice

  2408. die only once.

  2409. You will then die

  2410. only your earthly death

  2411. but your eternity

  2412. will be with him.

  2413. But those who only

  2414. are born once

  2415. then you will have

  2416. the second death.

  2417. The death where

  2418. you will be separated

  2419. from the creator

  2420. from love himself

  2421. for eternity.

  2422. Church in Smyrna

  2423. if you are faithful

  2424. and to the end

  2425. doesn't matter

  2426. if you're being

  2427. thrown into prison

  2428. doesn't matter

  2429. if you're super poor

  2430. you cling on

  2431. I will give you

  2432. the crown of life

  2433. because I've won

  2434. Jesus has won

2435. and I'm going to give you

  2436. this crown of life

  2437. and if you conquer

  2438. you won't be hurt

  2439. by the second death.

  2440. And this is where

  2441. I'll finish.

  2442. Like what authority

2443. does he have to say that?

2444. For someone to come up to you

  2445. and go hey

2446. don't be afraid of dying.

  2447. Like I don't know

  2448. one day you'll die

  2449. like you Joy

  2450. as will I

  2451. but you're a lot younger

  2452. than me

  2453. so you'll probably be

  2454. a lot later.

  2455. If I say hey

  2456. don't worry about

  2457. dying

2458. and you won't be hurt

  2459. by the second death

  2460. you'll be like

2461. oh that's kind and nice

2462. but you have no authority

  2463. James to say that.

  2464. Why does Jesus

  2465. have that authority?

2466. Why does he say that?

2467. Where did he even get

2468. this crown of life from?

2469. Of course he got it

  2470. from the cross.

  2471. When he died

  2472. and then resurrected again

  2473. he says

  2474. all authority

  2475. in heaven

  2476. and on earth

2477. has now been given to me.

  2478. Why?

  2479. Because I defeated

  2480. death itself.

2481. And that's why he said

2482. that's when he introduced himself

  2483. when he pulled open

  2484. the curtains

  2485. he said

2486. I am the Alpha and Omega

2487. I am the first and the last

  2488. I hold the keys

  2489. to death and Hades.

2490. That means no one dies

  2491. without my say so.

2492. I have the last word.

2493. So long as you believe in me.

2494. Because if you believe in me

  2495. if you follow me

  2496. you won't be hurt

  2497. by the second death

  2498. because you win.

  2499. Because I win.

  2500. Because I was faithful

  2501. unto death

  2502. for you.

  2503. Even death

  2504. on a cross.

  2505. But now

  2506. God has exalted me

  2507. to have the name

  2508. above every name

  2509. so that every knee

  2510. will bow

  2511. and every tongue

  2512. confess

  2513. that I am Lord

2514. and you share that with me

2515. so long as you follow

  2516. me.

  2517. I don't know about you

  2518. and I'm finished now

  2519. but

  2520. I hope those words

  2521. that he spoke

  2522. to Smyrna

  2523. encourages you.

  2524. The Christian life

  2525. when lived properly

  2526. invites pressure.

  2527. We're not looking

  2528. for trouble

  2529. but there's something

2530. about the way we live

  2531. that is different

2532. to the way of the world.

  2533. When the world

  2534. says payback

2535. we say turn the other cheek.

  2536. When the world

  2537. loves only the people

  2538. that love you

  2539. Jesus says

2540. love those who hate you.

2541. Love those who despise you.

  2542. All those who utter

  2543. all kinds of evil

  2544. against you

  2545. who slander you.

  2546. I think there's something

2547. that we can do right now.

  2548. There is someone

  2549. in your church

  2550. sorry in your church

  2551. well yes

  2552. in your church

  2553. in your office

  2554. in your family

  2555. in your friendship group

  2556. that is slandering you

  2557. that is doing something

2558. that is not kind to you.

  2559. If you follow

  2560. the way of Jesus

  2561. it should look different.

  2562. It should change

  2563. the way you respond.

  2564. We're no longer offended

  2565. because Jesus took on

2566. the ultimate offense for us.

  2567. We're no longer

  2568. afraid of death

2569. because he died for us

  2570. and rose again

2571. and we're with the guy

2572. that died and rose again.

  2573. That should mean something.

2574. And as we were worshipping

  2575. I was just praying

  2576. that we would all

  2577. understand that.

  2578. Actually there's nothing

  2579. that I can say

  2580. that will help you.

  2581. Only the Holy Spirit

2582. can really reveal that to you.

2583. My prayer for us is

  2584. are we prepared

2585. for any kind of test?

2586. Or when we face challenges

  2587. or we face pressures

  2588. from this society

  2589. can we be faithful

  2590. to the end?

2591. Or do we veer off?

  2592. Last week's church

  2593. in Ephesus

  2594. just 30 miles south

  2595. of us

2596. they had a first love

  2597. and then they started

  2598. flirting with other things.

  2599. The church in Smyrna

  2600. doesn't have this problem

  2601. and it goes faithful

  2602. to the end

  2603. and Jesus promises

  2604. the crown of life.

  2605. That's what we should

  2606. be aiming for.

  2607. But I'll tell you

  2608. one last thing.

  2609. It's not easy.

2610. Running a long distance race

  2611. is not easy.

  2612. Fighting a long battle

  2613. is not easy.

  2614. That's why we gather.

2615. That's why we do it together.

2616. Because if you do it

  2617. on your own

  2618. there's a high chance

  2619. you don't get there.

  2620. Again that African proverb

2621. if you want to go

  2622. somewhere fast

  2623. you go alone.

2624. If you want to go

  2625. somewhere far

  2626. you go together.

  2627. Hebrews 10.25

  2628. Don't stop meeting together

  2629. and encourage one another

  2630. until the day

  2631. draws near.

  2632. Let us hold fast

  2633. to that confession.

  2634. That's why we gather.

2635. We have so many things

  2636. still to figure out.

  2637. I don't even know

2638. if the TV was tall enough

2639. today for you to see

  2640. the lyrics.

  2641. There's so many things.

  2642. I heard the chairs

  2643. aren't comfortable.

2644. Thank you for sitting there

  2645. for so long.

  2646. But my hope is

  2647. can we be brought

  2648. to Jesus

  2649. together as a family?

  2650. That's the only way

  2651. we keep this going.

  2652. Keep ourselves going.

  2653. We're in week three.

2654. I wanted to share something

2655. just before we finish here.

  2656. Maybe we won't have

2657. quite time for the response.

  2658. As we're trying this

2659. for these next three months

  2660. I encourage you

  2661. come and test out.

2662. I know some of you

  2663. are visiting.

  2664. Welcome you again.

  2665. But actually as we

  2666. get to the point

  2667. where we're more comfortable

  2668. I'm going to start

  2669. asking you to

  2670. to actually

2671. if you want to be part

  2672. of this gathering

2673. we want to know you.

  2674. We want to know

  2675. who you are.

  2676. Because if you're going

  2677. through pressure

  2678. if you're going

  2679. through tribulation

  2680. if you're going

  2681. through poverty

  2682. if you're going

  2683. through slander

  2684. we want to know

  2685. what you're going through.

2686. And so we have a few

  2687. months here

  2688. where we're trying

  2689. to figure out

  2690. and I know people

  2691. are coming from

  2692. different congregations

  2693. within the same church

  2694. that's completely okay

2695. but what we're hoping for

  2696. is as we start

2697. to settle as a congregation

  2698. is that we start

  2699. getting to the point

  2700. where okay

  2701. these are my people.

  2702. Because if it's just

  2703. a service we want

  2704. to attend

  2705. there are plenty

  2706. further down the road.

  2707. There are plenty

  2708. who are more gifted

  2709. who are more entertaining

2710. who are better at teaching.

  2711. If there's better songs

  2712. that you want

  2713. there's somewhere else

2714. but this is not a service.

2715. I hope that we are people

2716. who look at this book

  2717. and go man

2718. I need to figure this out

  2719. and I need people

2720. to help me figure this out

  2721. together.

2722. I need to be known.

  2723. I want to know.

  2724. So I invite you

2725. if you're one of those

2726. people who are on the edge

  2727. keep joining us

  2728. but at some point

  2729. we're going to want

  2730. to know you.

  2731. My hope is that

2732. if we get to a point

  2733. maybe by Christmas

2734. any person that we ask

  2735. who is here

2736. hey who are your three people

  2737. that you know here

  2738. I would love for

  2739. us all to be

  2740. quite confident

  2741. in saying

2742. who some of our people

  2743. are within this gathering.

  2744. It's not just a service.

2745. The stakes are too high.

2746. The challenges are too tough

2747. to do it on your own.

  2748. Let us be faithful

  2749. unto death

2750. and let us do it together.

  2751. Thank you.
