  1. Hey, the first Friday of every month, that is this Friday.

  2. So if you are interested in joining a midweek gathering this Friday,

  3. ! What time would we meet here?

  4. !

  5. This is the place that you want to be.

  6. Morning, everyone. Good morning. Good morning, Danny.

  7. What have you got there? What drink have you got?

  8. Coffee.

  9. Coffee, just straight coffee.

  10. There's fatigue. There's fatigue. I don't know if you're feeling it.

  11. There's fatigue. We had a first month of September,

  12. and then, of course, it's a holiday now. It's break.

  13. We have a few people who are away.

  14. But we're here, and I'm excited for today.

  15. I'm excited for what we're going to share.

  16. But as I said last week, we're going to keep repeating

  17. just so we remember some of the things that we're learning.

  18. We're starting this new season together,

  19. and we're saying, let's start with the end in mind.

  20. So let's go all the way to Revelation.

  21. If we're going to talk about church,

  22. let's go to see what Jesus says about the church, right?

  23. That's going to be the most important thing,

  24. because we don't want to start something that then, at the end,

  25. Zhao Zhou Yang, or he doesn't like, or he doesn't recognize.

  26. And we're like, oh, we've been doing church for 50 years, Jesus.

  27. And Jesus is like, that isn't my church.

  28. That doesn't look like my church.

  29. Turn around. Like, I don't want that.

  30. I want to start with the end in mind, right?

  31. And so he writes to the church, and he writes to seven churches,

  32. which represents the whole complete church.

  33. And the first church he writes to is Ephesus.

  34. And he says, you're doing all these good things.

  35. You're A star, but you're missing one thing.

  36. What are they missing, Godfrey?

  37. Love.

  38. They're missing love.

  39. That sofa looks so comfy, by the way.

  40. It just looks so good.

  41. You're missing love.

  42. You're doing all these great things for the community,

  43. yet you don't have love.

  44. Then because of that, I'm going to come and shut you down.

  45. That's what he says.

  46. Then the messenger keeps going up the coast,

  47. and he goes to the next place, which is Smyrna.

  48. Oh, good, guys.

  49. Smyrna.

  50. They have trouble coming.

  51. They're going to be thrown into prison.

  52. And he says, for 10 days, you'll be thrown into prison,

  53. and you'll be tested, and you will have tribulation.

  54. Be faithful unto death.

  55. What?

  56. There's no help coming.

  57. I'm not going to come and break you out of prison.

  58. I'm not going to stop you from going into prison.

  59. I'm going to give you something even more.

  60. If you are faithful unto death,

  61. I will give you the crown of life.

  62. You won't be hurt by the second death.

  63. We'll all die once.

  64. But the prayer is that we don't die twice.

  65. It's huge.

  66. And then he carries on going to the next city,

  67. which is the city of Pergamum.

  68. What was Pergamum's thing?

  69. Mark?

  70. Some of them were doing some things that weren't good.

  71. Questionable.

  72. Compromised.

  73. They were compromised.

  74. They were like, hey, we can be Christians,

  75. but then we can do all this other stuff on the side,

  76. and then we can have the best of both worlds.

  77. The problem is when you have the best of both worlds,

  78. you give up eternity.

  79. When you have the best of both worlds,

  80. you give up the true life.

  81. At the very end.

  82. And now we reach the church in Thyatira.

  83. Now this is different.

  84. Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum,

  85. these were like almost,

  86. these are the big cities.

  87. This was New York, London, Tokyo.

  88. Thyatira is kind of like this working class city,

  89. and it's a little bit different.

  90. But really the message time and time again,

  91. and actually this one has lots of overlap

  92. with the one from last week.

  93. Time and time again is what this is.

  94. Christians, you Christians,

  95. you have to be different.

  96. You just have to be different.

  97. You're built different.

  98. You look different.

  99. You sound different.

  100. The challenge though here is,

  101. we're trying to live in this world,

  102. and trying to make a living in this world,

  103. and trying to survive in this world,

  104. and often we're trying to reach people

  105. in the most relational way possible.

  106. I think I've literally said this myself.

  107. Hey, those Christians are no different to you guys.

  108. We're not weird.

  109. We're just as normal.

  110. We're just as cool.

  111. We try to be cool.

  112. Haven't you heard someone say that,

  113. or you want to say that?

  114. Oh, we're no different.

  115. We're okay.

  116. But the truth is,

  117. if you look at these letters,

  118. it seems to say,

  119. Paul's saying,

  120. sorry,

  121. Jesus is saying to the church,

  122. if you're a follower of me,

  123. you've got to be different in some way.

  124. You've got to be different.

  125. The question is,

  126. are we different?

  127. Are we different to any other group out there

  128. that's meeting

  129. because they have similar interests as well?

  130. Is our one just because we're interested

  131. in this guy called Jesus?

  132. We're interested in talking about him

  133. because he sounded like a good guy.

  134. Are we different?

  135. And so as we reach this letter,

  136. I want to ask you,

  137. ask the Lord,

  138. what is it that you want me to hear today?

  139. How do you want me to be different?

  140. Not abrasive,

  141. not rude,

  142. not obnoxious,

  143. not arrogant.

  144. How do you want me to be different?

  145. What does that look like?

  146. And so to read the word,

  147. I'm going to actually ask

  148. one of the deacons of our church,

  149. Tony,

  150. who's been a long, long, long,

  151. long standing member of our church.

  152. And Tony,

  153. just going to invite you up

  154. to come minister to us

  155. with the word of God.

  156. And then as I invite him up,

  157. can I invite you,

  158. can I invite us

  159. to stand for the word of the Lord?

  160. Can you use that mic?

  161. Yeah, okay.

  162. To the church,

  163. to the angel of the church

  164. in Thyatira write,

  165. these are the words

  166. of the Son of God

  167. whose eyes are like blazing fire

  168. and whose feet

  169. are like burnished bronze.

  170. I know your deeds,

  171. your love and faith,

  172. your service and perseverance,

  173. and that you are now doing more

  174. than you did at first.

  175. Nevertheless,

  176. I have this against you.

  177. You tolerate that woman,

  178. Jezebel,

  179. who calls herself a prophet.

  180. By her teaching,

  181. she misleads my servants

  182. into sexual immorality

  183. and the eating of food

  184. sacrificed to idols.

  185. I have given her time

  186. to repent of her immorality,

  187. but she is unwilling.

  188. So I will cast her

  189. on the bed of suffering,

  190. and I will make those

  191. who commit adultery with her

  192. suffer intensely,

  193. unless they repent of her ways.

  194. I will strike her children dead.

  195. Then all the churches will know

  196. that I am he

  197. who searches hearts and minds,

  198. and I will repay each of you

  199. according to your deeds.

  200. Now I say to the rest of you

  201. in Thyatira,

  202. to you who do not hold

  203. to her teaching

  204. and have not learned

  205. Satan's so-called

  206. deep secrets,

  207. I will not impose

  208. any other burden on you

  209. except to hold on

  210. to what you have

  211. until I come.

  212. To the one who is victorious

  213. and does my will to the end,

  214. I will give authority

  215. over the nations.

  216. That one will rule them

  217. and with an iron scepter

  218. and will dash them

  219. to pieces like pottery.

  220. Just as I have received

  221. authority from my Father,

  222. I will also give that one

  223. the morning star.

  224. Whoever has ears,

  225. let them hear

  226. what the Spirit

  227. says to the churches.

  228. This is the word of the Lord.

  229. Thank you, Tony.

  230. Please take a seat.

  231. And well done,

  232. everyone who's on a beanbag.

  233. Standing and sitting

  234. is no easy task.

  235. Thank you for doing that.

  236. Hey, you know,

  237. it's just one of those things

  238. that we're trying to do.

  239. I don't know about you,

  240. but I so often

  241. take for granted

  242. the word of the Lord.

  243. I'm like,

  244. oh, I've got to read my Bible.

  245. I've got to read this thing.

  246. Or like when someone

  247. reads it,

  248. you just glaze over

  249. or it just kind of

  250. goes in and out.

  251. Don't you have that?

  252. And I'm like,

  253. but if this is really

  254. what we say it is,

  255. if it really is as valuable

  256. to us,

  257. people die for this book.

  258. And then we treat it

  259. just kind of like,

  260. oh, I've got to read it.

  261. So, I mean,

  262. it can be frustrating

  263. sometimes needing

  264. to stand up and down,

  265. but I feel as though

  266. it helps me.

  267. I'm like, man,

  268. this is God,

  269. and he's here

  270. and he's speaking

  271. to us

  272. and I want to take heed

  273. what he has to say.

  274. This is the word of God.

  275. So, he's going to this church

  276. in Thyatira.

  277. I mean,

  278. we're in the fourth church now

  279. and it's kind of like,

  280. okay,

  281. there's a lot of things

  282. to be scared of

  283. out there, right?

  284. There's the devil

  285. who's throwing people

  286. into prison.

  287. There's people who are doing

  288. all the right things

  289. for all the wrong reasons

  290. and they're going to get

  291. shut down.

  292. So, if I'm the church

  293. in Thyatira,

  294. I'm like, okay,

  295. it's now our turn.

  296. What's going to happen?

  297. And he says

  298. to the angel of the church

  299. in Thyatira,

  300. write the words

  301. of the Son of God.

  302. He introduces himself

  303. as a big deal.

  304. I am the Son of God.

  305. Now, Thyatira was a city

  306. that actually worshipped

  307. lots of different kinds

  308. of gods

  309. and one of them

  310. was Apollo.

  311. Apollo, if you watch

  312. the film Troy,

  313. which I quoted last week,

  314. you can see a little bit

  315. of what that looks like.

  316. It was the God of the sun.

  317. It was the God of the sun,

  318. sunshine.

  319. Apollo was known

  320. in Greek mythology

  321. to be the son of Zeus.

  322. In fact,

  323. some people in the city

  324. would call Caesar

  325. the son of God,

  326. the son of Zeus.

  327. So, Jesus,

  328. seemingly knowing that

  329. and says,

  330. I'm writing to you,

  331. these are my words

  332. and guess who I am?

  333. I am the real son of God.

  334. You guys keep putting

  335. other people

  336. as the sons of God

  337. and sons of Zeus.

  338. Let me tell you who I am.

  339. I am the son of God

  340. whose eyes

  341. are like a flame

  342. of fire.

  343. He's quoting from

  344. Revelation 1

  345. when we introduce

  346. that picture of Jesus.

  347. Remember when I told you

  348. that Christina

  349. has eyes like fire?

  350. Yep, this is it.

  351. Jesus is like,

  352. hey,

  353. I am the son of God

  354. and I see right through you.

  355. I see through

  356. what you're doing.

  357. My eyes,

  358. my sight,

  359. my vision

  360. is purifying.

  361. It's cleansing.

  362. You can't hide anything

  363. from me.

  364. That's who he's talking,

  365. that's how he's introducing

  366. himself and he's like,

  367. whose feet are like

  368. burnished bronze.

  369. Kingdoms rise

  370. and kingdoms fall.

  371. Now it's the Romans.

  372. It used to be the Persians

  373. and it's the Syrians.

  374. Soon it will be the Americans

  375. and then it will be

  376. whatever kingdom,

  377. whatever nation,

  378. it doesn't matter.

  379. The kingdom of God,

  380. the other kingdoms

  381. rise and fall,

  382. the kingdom of God

  383. remains.

  384. Like feast,

  385. like burnished bronze.

  386. Purified,

  387. gone through the fire,

  388. steadfast.

  389. I'm the last one standing

  390. is what he's saying.

  391. I can see right through you

  392. and I'm the last one standing

  393. and I'm the son of God.

  394. So listen to my words.

  395. And then he says this.

  396. He says,

  397. I know you're,

  398. I actually like this.

  399. This is,

  400. these guys are doing a good job.

  401. They've got the fab five.

  402. I know your works,

  403. your love,

  404. your faith,

  405. your service

  406. and your patient endurance.

  407. That's pretty good.

  408. Right?

  409. The Ephesus church had it all

  410. but they didn't have love.

  411. These guys have love.

  412. Can you imagine

  413. just hearing this letter,

  414. the fourth one,

  415. as you're telling me,

  416. like,

  417. dude,

  418. we have love.

  419. Oh,

  420. it's all good.

  421. We've got love.

  422. And then it's even better.

  423. Then they say,

  424. and Jesus says,

  425. and your latter works

  426. are greater than your first.

  427. What does that mean?

  428. What do you think that means?

  429. It means they're growing.

  430. Like you started off like this

  431. and all the works

  432. you've got to hear

  433. and then it's growing

  434. and now your latter works

  435. are greater than your first.

  436. You are a growing church.

  437. Praise God,

  438. we are a growing church.

  439. We're figuring a lot of things out.

  440. This is our first week

  441. in trying a TV

  442. just to see those at the back.

  443. Was that better or not?

  444. Having,

  445. having,

  446. it was a little bit better.

  447. With that Spotify playlist.

  448. So if you still can't see the TVs,

  449. then the next best option

  450. is to download

  451. or get the Spotify playlist

  452. and learn all the songs

  453. off by heart

  454. and then you won't need the lyrics.

  455. We've actually got

  456. these sermons

  457. also on another

  458. Spotify podcast channel

  459. which we will share

  460. especially if you're

  461. in the gathering group.

  462. We're trying to figure things out.

  463. Last week,

  464. we were pretty full

  465. and I know it's flu season

  466. and praise God for Agnes.

  467. Where's Agnes?

  468. Is she here or is she busy?

  469. There's Agnes.

  470. Round of applause for Agnes

  471. and I'll tell you why.

  472. We were like,

  473. there's so many people here

  474. and everyone's like,

  475. because it's flu season

  476. and before you know it,

  477. we have seven

  478. air purifying machines

  479. dotted around the place

  480. with a sticker

  481. that says 99.9%

  482. COVID elimination.

  483. That's good.

  484. We're figuring things out.

  485. We're a growing church.

  486. We don't know what to do.

  487. Some people are still standing.

  488. We don't know.

  489. We're figuring

  490. all those things out

  491. and it's exciting.

  492. But let me tell you,

  493. as we're growing,

  494. here are the things on my heart.

  495. Do we have these things?

  496. If our works are getting more

  497. and I've had a few of you,

  498. actually,

  499. side reminder,

  500. if you filled out

  501. your prison ministry form

  502. and you haven't given it to me yet,

  503. please give it to me.

  504. Okay?

  505. My brother will be back next week

  506. because he's in the UK right now.

  507. Give it to me

  508. and we'll get that process started.

  509. Our works are growing.

  510. We've got fun things happening.

  511. But I pray as we're growing,

  512. we'll have the love of Thyatira

  513. that we would love God,

  514. that we don't love this space,

  515. that we don't love the view,

  516. that we don't love the songs,

  517. but we love God.

  518. We love His Word.

  519. We start to love His Word.

  520. Loving is hard.

  521. Anyone who's been married

  522. for any amount of time

  523. will tell you

  524. loving is hard

  525. requires effort.

  526. Learn how to love.

  527. Learn how to love Him.

  528. Learn how to love His Word.

  529. Learn how to love people.

  530. If you've been around

  531. human beings at all,

  532. you'll know human beings

  533. are hard to love.

  534. That's why it's a command.

  535. Love.

  536. Because it's not easy.

  537. It's not natural to love.

  538. I hope we grow in love

  539. as we grow.

  540. I hope we grow in faith.

  541. That we start to see,

  542. man,

  543. everything isn't quiet

  544. as it seems.

  545. This isn't just a service here.

  546. This isn't just a group

  547. of people gathering

  548. to make each other feel better.

  549. The thing they're gathering for

  550. is real.

  551. We can't see Him,

  552. but it's real.

  553. The battle outside is real.

  554. We have faith

  555. that the one who lives in us

  556. is greater than the one

  557. who lives in the world.

  558. I hope that we grow in faith.

  559. I also hope we grow in service.

  560. The prison ministry

  561. that whilst we gather,

  562. we also, what?

  563. Scatter.

  564. That we go out.

  565. That we go and meet people

  566. and introduce them

  567. to the gospel.

  568. I was just talking to a friend

  569. over lunch on Friday.

  570. I'm like,

  571. you know,

  572. we do so many church things.

  573. I come to church

  574. and I do this Bible study.

  575. I do this group.

  576. I do that group.

  577. But then when I'm at work,

  578. I don't talk about Jesus at all.

  579. Who does that?

  580. Who does all the church

  581. Christian stuff

  582. in church,

  583. but none of it outside?

  584. Right?

  585. Your colleagues don't know

  586. what you do on a Sunday.

  587. When you see them tomorrow morning,

  588. how was your weekend?

  589. Or you see them on Tuesday

  590. because it's public holiday.

  591. Woo!

  592. They were like,

  593. oh, what did you do this weekend?

  594. Oh, I did all this other stuff.

  595. But we don't talk about church.

  596. That's just like a side thing.

  597. How do we grow in service

  598. and reach and scatter

  599. to the people

  600. who actually need this good news?

  601. And to grow in patient endurance

  602. because it's not easy.

  603. To battle against all the things

  604. in this world is not easy.

  605. To live harmoniously here

  606. is not easy.

  607. Oh, I think someone pressed

  608. the fire door outside.

  609. Anyway.

  610. We are going to try

  611. and fight through that.

  612. As we're growing,

  613. do we have love?

  614. Do we have service?

  615. Do we have patience?

  616. Do we have the endurance

  617. it takes to get one?

  618. The church in Thyatira has it

  619. and I want to have it too.

  620. But,

  621. here's the big but.

  622. You guys are doing really well

  623. so that was really loud.

  624. But,

  625. you're doing all these

  626. good things, guys.

  627. You even have love.

  628. But,

  629. you tolerate

  630. that one person.

  631. That woman

  632. who calls herself

  633. a prophetess.

  634. Now,

  635. that woman's name

  636. isn't actually Jezebel.

  637. It's not actually Jezebel.

  638. But,

  639. of course,

  640. we know Jezebel

  641. to be the evil woman

  642. in the Old Testament

  643. who's married to King Ahab

  644. who causes the Israelites

  645. to all worship Baal.

  646. This woman.

  647. And he's saying,

  648. you tolerate this woman.

  649. You're not joining her,

  650. but you're tolerating her.

  651. There's someone

  652. in your midst

  653. who's teaching

  654. and seducing

  655. my servants

  656. to practice

  657. sexual immorality

  658. and to eat food

  659. sacrificed to idols.

  660. that's dangerous.

  661. The question is,

  662. do we have any

  663. of that compromise here?

  664. This is the same

  665. as last week

  666. to start with here.

  667. Are there compromises

  668. that you've made?

  669. Is there a woman here?

  670. Is there a man here?

  671. Is there an individual here

  672. who is teaching

  673. and seducing people

  674. astray?

  675. Now,

  676. actually,

  677. it wasn't even

  678. that

  679. malicious almost.

  680. You know what she was saying?

  681. Do you know the things

  682. that she was saying?

  683. Let me tell you a little bit

  684. about Thyatira.

  685. Thyatira was a working class

  686. kind of city.

  687. It had loads of trade guilds.

  688. So loads of associations

  689. of merchants

  690. and craftsmen

  691. and all these kinds of things.

  692. And one of the essentials

  693. of joining one of these

  694. trade guilds,

  695. if you want to kind of

  696. do any kind of business,

  697. now,

  698. Thyatira,

  699. Lydia,

  700. has anyone heard of Lydia

  701. in the Bible?

  702. Lydia was a businesswoman

  703. from Thyatira.

  704. She's mentioned

  705. in Acts 16.

  706. She's the woman

  707. who actually backs

  708. Paul in Philippi

  709. to start the first church

  710. in Europe.

  711. So she's from Thyatira

  712. and she was a woman,

  713. a businesswoman

  714. of purple cloth.

  715. And so Thyatira

  716. is filled with this

  717. kind of business here,

  718. filled with all these

  719. trade guilds.

  720. And the thing

  721. with these trade guilds

  722. was you have to attend

  723. all these dinners,

  724. all these banquets.

  725. You do all these things

  726. to kind of stay

  727. within the trade guild

  728. so you can be,

  729. you can have,

  730. you can network,

  731. you can have a community,

  732. you can have connections.

  733. And so this prophetess

  734. was basically just saying,

  735. hey,

  736. it's actually okay

  737. to go to those things.

  738. Christians,

  739. we are freed

  740. from slavery now.

  741. We can actually,

  742. we're free to go

  743. and go to all these banquets

  744. and these things.

  745. Now the problem was

  746. as you enter these things,

  747. so often these banquets

  748. and these events

  749. would descend into chaos,

  750. would descend

  751. into sexual immorality.

  752. But she was saying,

  753. hey,

  754. if we're saved by Christ,

  755. we can do whatever

  756. we need to do.

  757. Do whatever we need to do

  758. to stay ahead,

  759. to be part of society.

  760. That's what she's saying.

  761. And then Jesus is saying,

  762. and you tolerate her.

  763. The question is,

  764. what do we tolerate?

  765. And last week,

  766. I asked you this question,

  767. right?

  768. I said,

  769. like,

  770. we're called to be in Hong Kong,

  771. but what if Hong Kong

  772. has seeped into our church?

  773. What if Hong Kong,

  774. what if the city

  775. has seeped into the church?

  776. What banquets

  777. do you have to go to

  778. for your work?

  779. I don't know,

  780. finance guys.

  781. Finance is

  782. the big thing

  783. here in Hong Kong.

  784. What are the things

  785. that you have to do

  786. to go to

  787. to keep your career going,

  788. to expand your business empire?

  789. Whether you go out

  790. for dinners with clients

  791. and it descends

  792. into something else

  793. that you know

  794. is going there,

  795. but you're like,

  796. and you reason to yourself,

  797. oh,

  798. it's okay.

  799. It's the same thing

  800. I said last week,

  801. going to a party

  802. to help your friends

  803. who are getting drunk

  804. to look after them.

  805. What are the things

  806. that you're justifying

  807. if you're a finance guy,

  808. if you're in real estate

  809. and you have to

  810. take these meetings

  811. that go late into the night

  812. that there's lots

  813. of alcohol involved.

  814. What are you thinking here?

  815. What's your thought process here?

  816. Is there any area

  817. of compromise

  818. that we have in our lives

  819. that we have

  820. in our friendship groups?

  821. I want to keep

  822. this group of friends,

  823. but I know

  824. this group of friends

  825. has to go

  826. and do this kind of stuff.

  827. and you're like,

  828. oh,

  829. but it's okay.

  830. It's okay.

  831. That's the compromise.

  832. What about those

  833. in the entertainment industry?

  834. Those who are influencers,

  835. those who are online.

  836. What do you have to do?

  837. What are the things

  838. that you have to do

  839. to kind of like,

  840. man,

  841. if I don't go to that,

  842. I'll be ignored,

  843. right?

  844. If I don't play ball

  845. in this,

  846. then I won't

  847. get my career going.

  848. In church,

  849. if you're a newcomer here

  850. and you don't know

  851. anything about Jesus,

  852. we welcome you.

  853. We're not weird.

  854. We're no different.

  855. But we are

  856. also very different

  857. because we believe

  858. there's something

  859. outside of this world.

  860. We welcome you

  861. and we want you

  862. to see what it is.

  863. But we also need

  864. to know that

  865. we're trying not

  866. to compromise it.

  867. Maybe it's not

  868. even compromise.

  869. Here's a dangerous

  870. word that I want

  871. to post to you.

  872. Guys are particularly

  873. good at this.

  874. Compartmentalize.

  875. I was talking

  876. to a good friend

  877. of mine who's

  878. the managing director

  879. of a big consulting firm

  880. and I was like,

  881. hey,

  882. you're a Christian.

  883. Why has God

  884. put you where you are

  885. and what does that

  886. look like?

  887. What does your faith

  888. and your work look like?

  889. Do you know what he said?

  890. He's like,

  891. oh, actually,

  892. they're two separate things.

  893. There's just two departments

  894. that I'm trying to,

  895. I mean,

  896. typical consultant language.

  897. There's just two different areas

  898. that I need to kind of,

  899. oh,

  900. oh,

  901. that's interesting.

  902. I'm not where you are

  903. so I don't dare say

  904. how I would react

  905. and do that,

  906. but something tells me

  907. that this book

  908. doesn't want us

  909. to compartmentalize.

  910. That Jesus is either

  911. your Lord

  912. or he's not.

  913. But are there certain things

  914. that we compartmentalize

  915. and the easiest one is,

  916. hey,

  917. on a Sunday morning,

  918. I am good.

  919. I come to church,

  920. I'm good,

  921. I'm tired

  922. because on Saturday night

  923. I stayed really late

  924. and I got home really late.

  925. So we compartmentalize

  926. certain parts of our week

  927. into being for Jesus

  928. and the rest of the time

  929. is whatever.

  930. Do you compromise

  931. and do you compartmentalize?

  932. Jesus wants us to,

  933. Jesus wants all of us.

  934. He doesn't say,

  935. love me with your mind,

  936. soul,

  937. heart.

  938. He says,

  939. love me with all

  940. of your heart,

  941. soul,

  942. mind,

  943. and strength.

  944. Do we compromise

  945. and do we compartmentalize?

  946. Are there parties

  947. that you have to go to?

  948. Are there things

  949. that you have to do

  950. in order to be accepted

  951. to get where you want?

  952. Who's watched

  953. Chariots of Fire?

  954. That's a really old film.

  955. I think the older people

  956. are like,

  957. oh,

  958. yep,

  959. that was me.

  960. Watch it.

  961. It's about a guy

  962. who doesn't compromise.

  963. It's about a guy

  964. who is a sprinter

  965. but doesn't want to sprint

  966. on a Sunday

  967. because that's God's day

  968. and everyone's just outraged.

  969. Outraged.

  970. Why would you not do it

  971. on a Sunday?

  972. Just do it.

  973. Do church on another day.

  974. There's reasons

  975. for everything, right?

  976. Now,

  977. of course,

  978. there's some jobs.

  979. There's some,

  980. like,

  981. you have to go to work

  982. on a Sunday.

  983. I get it.

  984. Erica,

  985. don't not show up

  986. to work on a Sunday.

  987. She's a doctor.

  988. Like,

  989. that's not good.

  990. I know Trevor has to go to work.

  991. Like,

  992. there are some jobs

  993. you can't,

  994. but there are other things

  995. that are kind of like,

  996. we reason, right?

  997. Oh,

  998. it's okay.

  999. We can,

  1000. we can,

  1001. I guess,

1002. Sunday used to be church,

1003. but we can do that instead

1004. and we'll wake it up somehow.

  1005. You know what?

  1006. We'll watch it online.

  1007. We'll watch church online

1008. so we can go and,

1009. we can go and do what we do.

  1010. Little things,

  1011. little things

1012. that we let through the door,

  1013. little things

  1014. that sound reasonable

1015. and that's all it takes.

  1016. Church,

1017. I want us to grow,

1018. but I want us to grow

  1019. in love,

  1020. faith,

  1021. patient endurance

  1022. and service,

1023. but also not to compromise,

  1024. to not make things

  1025. so seeker sensitive

  1026. that we become

  1027. sin sensitive.

  1028. If you're a seeking here,

  1029. we welcome you,

1030. but we also can't tolerate

  1031. when there are things

1032. that are in our lives

  1033. that are destroying us,

  1034. consuming us,

  1035. corrupting us.

1036. If we truly loved you,

  1037. we wouldn't,

1038. we can't just stand by

1039. and let you do it.

  1040. Oh,

  1041. because we're a tolerant society.

  1042. No,

  1043. tolerance isn't a spirit,

  1044. fruit of the spirit.

  1045. Love is,

  1046. grace is.

1047. And this is the hardest line

  1048. because society out there

  1049. has so many things

  1050. that are challenging.

  1051. Go,

  1052. hey,

1053. what do you guys think about this?

1054. What do you guys think about that?

1055. Would you let that kind of person in?

1056. Christina and I finally got around

1057. to watching the Jesus Revolution film.

  1058. Has anyone watched that?

  1059. It's on Netflix now.

1060. It's about the kind of

  1061. the Jesus hippie movement

  1062. from the 70s.

  1063. Pretty cool.

1064. It's actually a really well done movie

1065. and it's not your typical

  1066. cliche,

  1067. cheesy Christian movie.

  1068. Worth a watch.

  1069. And of course,

  1070. there's loads of flaws

1071. and actually they do highlight

1072. some of those things there as well.

  1073. It's on Netflix.

1074. But one thing is basically

  1075. there was a church,

  1076. a small church

1077. filled with the kind of

  1078. typical people

1079. that you'd expect to be in church

1080. in the 70s in America.

  1081. And then suddenly,

  1082. like,

1083. they start inviting hippies in.

  1084. And you can imagine

  1085. the tension there.

1086. And then the pastor says

1087. this one thing that I love.

  1088. He says,

1089. how can we close our doors to them?

  1090. How?

1091. If you look at the Bible,

1092. the essence of the faith

1093. is that we welcome anyone.

  1094. Jesus himself

  1095. hung out with people.

  1096. Actually,

  1097. the most disputed thing

  1098. about Jesus

1099. is who he shared the table with,

1100. who he ate dinner with.

1101. Why did you eat with them people?

1102. Why did you eat with these people?

1103. And the guy in the book says,

1104. the essence of the faith

  1105. is that

1106. these people are welcomed in.

  1107. But there's a difference

  1108. between welcome

  1109. and accepting.

1110. I'm trying to find this line.

  1111. I want to welcome

  1112. every single person in.

  1113. And you come

  1114. just as you are.

  1115. That's what God says.

  1116. You come

1117. but he loves you enough

  1118. to not keep you

  1119. where you are.

  1120. Right?

  1121. I can welcome you

  1122. but I don't necessarily

  1123. need to accept

  1124. what you're doing.

  1125. You guys help me

  1126. and God help us

  1127. find that line.

1128. Jesus does this so well.

1129. Have you read Jesus' stuff?

1130. Have you read his sermon?

  1131. Jesus says,

  1132. the law says

  1133. if you commit adultery,

  1134. you can't do that.

  1135. That's not good.

  1136. And then Jesus says,

  1137. the law says this

1138. but what I'll say is this.

1139. If you look at someone,

1140. you better cut your eye out.

  1141. He sees the law

1142. and then he like ups it

  1143. each time.

1144. But haven't you found it fascinating

1145. that each time he does that

  1146. yet the lowest,

1147. the worst of the sinners

  1148. keep coming to him?

1149. I don't know how he does it.

  1150. I really don't know

  1151. how he does it.

1152. But that comes back to

  1153. bring them to me.

  1154. Bring them to me.

1155. So they even just reminded me

  1156. just now.

1157. That's what the Lord wants.

  1158. As a church,

  1159. we are pointing people

  1160. to him.

  1161. I'm like,

  1162. I don't know what to do

  1163. with your situation.

  1164. I don't know

  1165. whether Jesus likes it.

  1166. Well actually,

  1167. there's some things

  1168. I know that Jesus

  1169. doesn't like that.

  1170. There are other things

  1171. I'm like,

  1172. I don't know.

  1173. Come to us.

  1174. Be with us.

  1175. We welcome you

  1176. and go to him

1177. and let him be the one

1178. that tells you the truth.

1179. Let him be the one

  1180. that delivers the truth

  1181. with grace and love

  1182. because I can't do it.

  1183. Not to the level

  1184. that he can.

  1185. That's why Jesus says,

  1186. bring them to me

  1187. and I'll do it.

1188. But you as a body,

  1189. welcome.

1190. You don't have to accept

  1191. but welcome.

  1192. But don't tolerate.

1193. It was harsh for these guys

  1194. because actually

  1195. they weren't doing anything.

  1196. They were just tolerating.

1197. They weren't joining in necessarily.

  1198. And yet Jesus says,

  1199. that's the problem

1200. because when you have a group

1201. and I pointed at that couch

  1202. last week,

  1203. maybe it's this couch.

1204. Maybe it's just you two.

1205. Maybe it's just Sonny and Godfrey.

  1206. You're teaching us

  1207. how to compartmentalize,

  1208. how to compromise

1209. and you start telling people,

  1210. hey actually,

  1211. it's okay.

1212. It's okay to do this

1213. and then you can do this.

1214. It's okay to be there

1215. and then you'll be there.

  1216. Jesus is saying,

  1217. that's dangerous

1218. because that kind of just

  1219. seeps through

  1220. to everywhere else.

  1221. That's the danger.

  1222. It's interesting,

  1223. he says this.

  1224. He says,

1225. to the rest of you,

1226. so that's the naughty corner,

1227. but to the rest of you,

  1228. sorry guys,

1229. I'll come and give you

  1230. a hug later.

  1231. It's just the couch.

1232. I'm just jealous of that couch.

1233. To the rest of you,

  1234. you have not held

  1235. to this teaching

1236. and you have not learned

  1237. the so-called

  1238. deep things of Satan.

  1239. What's that?

  1240. Can you see that?

1241. Can you read that there?

1242. What a strange way to put it.

1243. Jesus does a little like

  1244. so-called.

  1245. Verse 24,

1246. but to the rest of you

  1247. in Thyatira

  1248. who do not hold

  1249. this teaching,

  1250. who have not learned

  1251. what some call

1252. the deep things of Satan.

  1253. there were some people,

  1254. some people

  1255. sat in that corner

  1256. over there

  1257. who were telling people,

  1258. hey,

  1259. we've actually got

  1260. a secret thing.

  1261. We actually,

  1262. we've got a secret revelation.

  1263. We know more now.

1264. Do you know what we found out?

  1265. That the body

  1266. and the soul

  1267. are separate,

  1268. which means

  1269. if you've accepted Jesus

1270. and you believe in him,

1271. your soul's going to be saved

  1272. and your body,

  1273. you can do whatever

  1274. you want with.

  1275. There's a rising group

  1276. of people,

  1277. they were called

  1278. the Gnostics

  1279. at the time

  1280. who were professing

  1281. to have this special

  1282. realization

  1283. of the spiritual things.

  1284. Saying,

  1285. oh,

  1286. in the spiritual realm

  1287. that's okay

1288. and in the physical realm

  1289. this is okay.

  1290. So that's why

1291. Jesus was kind of doing

  1292. the air quits,

  1293. the so-called

  1294. deep things of Satan.

  1295. There was another group

  1296. that was saying,

  1297. hey,

1298. do you know how you conquer

  1299. the things of Satan?

  1300. Go do them.

  1301. That was the,

  1302. hey,

1303. do you know how to

  1304. stick it to Satan?

  1305. Go do the things

1306. that he wants you to do.

  1307. That was literally

  1308. the reasoning.

  1309. It's like,

  1310. if you do them,

  1311. if you go deeper

  1312. into sin,

  1313. then you will experience

1314. grace to a deeper level.

  1315. Have you done that?

  1316. Have you convinced

  1317. yourself of that?

  1318. When you're in a place

  1319. where you're just

  1320. in self-pity mode,

  1321. that's it,

  1322. I'm,

  1323. I suck at this

  1324. Christian stuff this week,

1325. I'm just going to go

  1326. deeper in.

  1327. I don't know,

  1328. God will save me

  1329. at some point.

1330. To the rest of you

  1331. who haven't,

  1332. Jesus is saying,

1333. to the rest of you,

1334. hold fast till I come.

  1335. Hang in there

  1336. is what he's saying.

  1337. He also says

  1338. something interesting.

  1339. If we just rewind

  1340. a little bit,

  1341. I found this is

  1342. pretty cool.

  1343. He says,

  1344. verse 21,

  1345. he's talking about

  1346. Jezebel,

  1347. who's the one

  1348. who's leading

  1349. all of this,

  1350. and then he says,

  1351. I gave her time

  1352. to repent.

  1353. Isn't that cool?

  1354. The worst of them,

  1355. the one who's leading

  1356. everyone astray,

  1357. seducing everyone.

  1358. Well,

  1359. he's trying to,

  1360. Jesus is saying,

  1361. I gave her time

  1362. to repent.

  1363. He's not hasty

  1364. with his judgment.

  1365. I don't know

  1366. whether you feel

  1367. like the sheep

  1368. being led astray

  1369. by the prophetess,

  1370. or you feel like

  1371. the prophetess

  1372. who's actually doing

  1373. the leading.

  1374. This is saying,

  1375. however deep

  1376. your sin is,

  1377. it doesn't matter.

  1378. Jesus still gives you

  1379. time to repent.

  1380. Even if you are

  1381. Jezebel,

  1382. no one should name

  1383. their daughter Jezebel.

  1384. It's not a name

  1385. to give

  1386. if you're having

  1387. a daughter anytime soon,

  1388. or a son,

  1389. but that's for

  1390. different reasons.

  1391. Don't,

  1392. no one likes

  1393. this name Jezebel.

  1394. This prophetess,

  1395. this evil queen,

  1396. some describe her

  1397. to be the most

  1398. evil woman

  1399. in the history

  1400. of mankind.

  1401. And yet,

  1402. Jesus says,

  1403. I gave her time

  1404. to repent.

  1405. Just to give you

  1406. a glimpse

  1407. of what Jesus

  1408. is like.

  1409. He's fierce,

  1410. his eyes

  1411. are like fire.

  1412. Can you imagine

  1413. that?

  1414. He's piercing

  1415. through to the

  1416. very depths

  1417. of your soul,

  1418. knows all

  1419. of your sin,

  1420. yet in that

  1421. moment,

  1422. he still gives

  1423. you time

  1424. to repent.

  1425. That's who

  1426. Jesus is.

  1427. But then he

  1428. says,

  1429. but she did not

  1430. repent of her

  1431. sexual immorality.

  1432. Behold,

  1433. I will throw her

  1434. onto a sickbed.

  1435. That's a bit

  1436. of a strange

  1437. thing to say.

  1438. But really,

  1439. it's tied into

  1440. the saying of,

  1441. actually,

  1442. you make your

  1443. own bed.

  1444. Have you heard

  1445. that saying

  1446. before?

  1447. You make

  1448. your own bed.

  1449. You suffer

  1450. the consequences

  1451. of your own

  1452. sin.

  1453. And this

  1454. prophetess,

  1455. who's teaching

  1456. people to commit

  1457. adultery,

  1458. often done on

  1459. a bed,

  1460. he's saying,

  1461. I will throw

  1462. her onto a

  1463. sickbed.

  1464. I will let

  1465. her,

  1466. I will leave

  1467. her to her

  1468. own devices,

  1469. and she will

  1470. suffer the

  1471. consequences

  1472. that she

  1473. deserves.

  1474. she's made

  1475. her own

  1476. bed.

  1477. So often,

  1478. we think about

  1479. Christianity as

  1480. these are the

  1481. things that we're

  1482. not allowed to

  1483. do.

  1484. Oh,

  1485. we're dating,

  1486. but we're not

  1487. allowed to have

  1488. sex before

  1489. marriage.

  1490. Hey,

  1491. we're doing

  1492. this,

  1493. but we're not

  1494. allowed to go

  1495. to that party.

  1496. We're not

  1497. allowed to do

  1498. this,

  1499. we're not

  1500. allowed to

  1501. do that.

  1502. And yeah,

  1503. those are

  1504. things,

  1505. but what are

  1506. they there for?

  1507. Why do I tell

  1508. my children that

  1509. they are not

  1510. allowed to play

  1511. with the

  1512. firehop in

  1513. the kitchen?

  1514. Because it'll

  1515. hurt them.

  1516. Until we

  1517. realize that

  1518. actually Jesus

  1519. is for our

  1520. good,

  1521. he gives us

  1522. time to

  1523. repent,

  1524. even if he

  1525. sees the

  1526. very depths

  1527. of our

  1528. soul.

  1529. What he

  1530. doesn't want

  1531. is for us

  1532. to suffer the

  1533. consequences of

  1534. our own

  1535. sin.

  1536. Because every

  1537. time a couple

  1538. decides to

  1539. give in to

  1540. the temptations

  1541. and to give

  1542. in to the

  1543. insecurities,

  1544. when a couple

  1545. decides,

  1546. okay,

  1547. if I don't

  1548. do this with

  1549. this person,

  1550. I'm not going

  1551. to keep them.

  1552. I'm going to

  1553. lose them.

  1554. That insecurity,

  1555. after it's done,

  1556. is that insecurity

  1557. gone?

  1558. Not.

  1559. It just

  1560. worsens.

  1561. It just gets

  1562. worse.

  1563. The sins that

  1564. we have that

  1565. keep us captive

  1566. are actually

  1567. things that are

  1568. destroying us.

  1569. That's why Jesus

  1570. is so harsh on

  1571. them.

  1572. Not because he's

  1573. harsh about the

  1574. actual things,

  1575. but because he

  1576. loves you and

  1577. I so much

  1578. that he's like,

  1579. don't do them.

  1580. Don't do them.

  1581. Those consequences

  1582. are so painful.

  1583. Every time you

  1584. give in,

  1585. every time you

  1586. compromise,

  1587. you know it

  1588. doesn't help.

  1589. You know it

  1590. doesn't get

  1591. better.

  1592. And I just

  1593. need to quickly

  1594. address this.

  1595. Verse 23,

  1596. and I will

  1597. strike her

  1598. children dead.

  1599. That's as

  1600. harsh as it

  1601. gets.

  1602. But what he's

  1603. saying here is

  1604. there are people

  1605. that she's

  1606. teaching and

  1607. following.

  1608. There are her

  1609. disciples.

  1610. There are her

  1611. spiritual kids.

  1612. There are people

  1613. who follow her

  1614. way.

  1615. They will be

  1616. removed.

  1617. They will be

  1618. gone.

  1619. The body of

  1620. Christ cannot

  1621. tolerate these

  1622. things.

  1623. Bring them to

  1624. me.

  1625. Let me confront

  1626. them.

  1627. And only hold

  1628. fast till the

  1629. end.

  1630. And keep my

  1631. works or keep

  1632. my will till

  1633. the end.

  1634. Hold fast.

  1635. That's like a

  1636. battle.

  1637. I was talking to

  1638. someone about this

  1639. recently.

  1640. I was like,

  1641. life is just

  1642. filled with

  1643. battles.

  1644. Does your

  1645. life feel like

  1646. an uphill

  1647. battle?

  1648. What are we

  1649. facing here?

  1650. What are the

  1651. battles that we

  1652. face in society

  1653. here?

  1654. Let me ask some

  1655. questions here.

  1656. What are the

  1657. battles that we

  1658. face in society?

  1659. What do you

  1660. think?

  1661. Trevor, what do

  1662. you got?

  1663. Lust.

  1664. That's an

  1665. uphill battle.

  1666. There's a book

  1667. called Every

  1668. Man's Battle.

  1669. But of course,

  1670. lust isn't just

  1671. unique to men

  1672. either.

  1673. It's to women.

  1674. For women.

  1675. It's for all of

  1676. us.

  1677. And it's not

  1678. lusting even

  1679. just physically

  1680. for other human

  1681. beings.

  1682. It's lusting all

  1683. kinds of things.

  1684. Lust is a huge

  1685. one.

  1686. What other

  1687. battles do we

  1688. face?

  1689. Paul, what

  1690. battles do

  1691. you face?

  1692. Greed.

  1693. Greed.

  1694. Always wanting

  1695. more and always

  1696. needing more.

  1697. I said a couple

  1698. of weeks ago,

  1699. one of my

  1700. friends who

  1701. knows super

  1702. wealthy people,

  1703. and he says,

  1704. it's really

  1705. funny.

  1706. The more

  1707. wealthy they

  1708. are, the

  1709. more poor

  1710. they feel.

  1711. They genuinely

  1712. feel I need

  1713. more.

  1714. Lust.

  1715. Greed.

  1716. What are the

  1717. other things?

  1718. What have we

  1719. got?

  1720. Tony, you

  1721. got anything

  1722. for us?

  1723. What are we

  1724. battling in

  1725. this society?

  1726. Success.

  1727. Success.

  1728. Needing to

  1729. feel like we've

  1730. achieved having

  1731. X amount of

  1732. followers on

  1733. IG and

  1734. likes that

  1735. come with

  1736. it or the

  1737. job title

  1738. that we

  1739. need.

  1740. Those are the

  1741. battles.

  1742. There's this

  1743. interesting battle

  1744. that I watched

  1745. in a video by

  1746. the Bible

  1747. project.

  1748. There's this

  1749. battle going

  1750. on between the

  1751. garden and

  1752. the city.

  1753. The values and

  1754. the principles of

  1755. the garden,

  1756. the garden of

  1757. Eden, the way

  1758. that God

  1759. created the

  1760. garden to be,

  1761. one of peace

  1762. and tranquility

  1763. and prosperity,

  1764. filled with

  1765. everything.

  1766. That's what we

  1767. were supposed

  1768. to have.

  1769. Yet, as you

  1770. see in the

  1771. Old Testament,

  1772. you start seeing

  1773. these cities

  1774. come.

  1775. That's where you

  1776. get the Tower

  1777. of Babel and

  1778. you get all

  1779. these Sodom and

  1780. Gomorrah and

  1781. all these things.

  1782. The values of

  1783. the city that

  1784. are pitched

  1785. against the

  1786. values of the

  1787. garden.

  1788. That's a battle

  1789. right there that's

  1790. happening for

  1791. our souls.

  1792. Our souls yearn

  1793. to be in the

  1794. garden.

  1795. Psalm 23,

  1796. that we lie

  1797. by still waters.

  1798. Yet, we're

  1799. filled with the

  1800. city of cities

  1801. where the

  1802. battle is just

  1803. constantly, the

  1804. battle of

  1805. success, the

  1806. battle of

  1807. busyness.

  1808. Hong Kong is

  1809. nuts now.

  1810. Of course, there's

  1811. the whole wanting

  1812. to get the

  1813. nightlife and the

  1814. night markets and

  1815. all those things,

  1816. which are quite

  1817. fun as well.

  1818. But, the

  1819. battle of

  1820. busyness,

  1821. success, lust,

  1822. greed.

  1823. The battle of

  1824. excessiveness.

  1825. Between the

  1826. garden and the

  1827. city, between the

  1828. flesh and the

  1829. spirit.

  1830. Romans 8 talks

  1831. about that

  1832. battle.

  1833. Romans 7 talks

  1834. about the battle

  1835. that Paul has

  1836. within it.

  1837. He's saying,

  1838. man, I want

  1839. to do this.

  1840. The things I

  1841. know I

  1842. shouldn't do, I

  1843. want to do.

  1844. And those are

  1845. things I know I

  1846. should do, I

  1847. don't want to do

  1848. at all.

  1849. He's got a

  1850. constant battle

  1851. within.

  1852. And then it's

  1853. an uphill one.

  1854. But then what's

  1855. Jesus' comfort?

  1856. What's Jesus'

  1857. encouragement?

  1858. And this is where

  1859. he finishes.

  1860. In the midst of

  1861. that battle,

  1862. whatever battle

  1863. it is that you

  1864. are facing right

  1865. now, Jesus

  1866. says, the one

  1867. who conquers and

  1868. who keeps my

  1869. works until the

  1870. end, to him I

  1871. will give

  1872. authority over

  1873. the nations, and

  1874. he will rule

  1875. them with a

  1876. rod of iron as

  1877. when earthen

  1878. pots are broken

  1879. in pieces, even

  1880. as I myself have

  1881. received authority

  1882. from my father.

  1883. The ESV version is

  1884. a little bit hard

  1885. to understand.

  1886. What he's saying

  1887. here is, to the

  1888. one who conquers, to

  1889. the one who keeps

  1890. my will, I will

  1891. give him authority.

  1892. He will win.

  1893. He will win all

  1894. of those battles.

1895. He will win like a

  1896. shepherd who is

  1897. holding a rod and

  1898. has the authority.

  1899. Why?

  1900. Because the

  1901. father gives

  1902. authority.

  1903. That's what he's

  1904. saying.

  1905. The father gives

  1906. you authority to

  1907. win that battle, not

  1908. because you will win

  1909. it, but because Jesus

  1910. already has.

  1911. To the one who

  1912. holds fast to the

1913. end, to the one who

  1914. conquers and keeps my

  1915. works until the end,

  1916. you will win.

  1917. I want you to have a

  1918. little thought exercise

  1919. right now.

  1920. The battle that you're

  1921. going through, and I

  1922. was just talking about

1923. this with a good friend

  1924. over breakfast, who

  1925. feels as though when

  1926. he's going to work, he's

  1927. just going into the

  1928. battle ring.

  1929. Like, every time, I'm

  1930. just ready to fight.

  1931. I've got to fight

  1932. something, I've got to

  1933. fight someone.

  1934. Imagine for a second

  1935. how you would approach

  1936. that if you truly

  1937. believed that Jesus

  1938. has already won.

  1939. Just imagine with me

  1940. for a second, whatever

1941. battle it is that you're

  1942. facing, whether it's one

  1943. of lust, whether it's

  1944. one with greed, whether

  1945. it's one with success,

  1946. whether it's one with

  1947. busyness, approval,

  1948. whatever it might be,

1949. imagine with me for a

  1950. second, whatever arena

  1951. that you're battling in,

  1952. whether it's finance,

  1953. entertainment, education,

  1954. health care, whatever it

  1955. is, imagine if the

  1956. truth of Jesus' victory

  1957. actually rung true in

  1958. your ring.

  1959. imagine if Jesus himself

  1960. is in that ring.

1961. how would that change the

  1962. way you live?

1963. How would that change the

  1964. way you fight?

  1965. Would it?

  1966. It should.

1967. And we were just talking

  1968. about that.

1969. We were like, if we're

1970. battling in the ring, in a

  1971. battle that has already

1972. been won, that means, and

1973. Jesus is in the ring with

1974. you, so he won't let anything

1975. happen to you, the one who

1976. conquers won't be hurt by

1977. the second death, then it

1978. changes the way you fight.

1979. Do you know what it means?

1980. It means you can turn the

  1981. other cheek.

1982. It means you can take

1983. punches and hits from the

  1984. people that you're fighting

1985. with, because you know that

1986. the one who conquers and

1987. keeps his works until the

1988. end, he will give authority

  1989. over the nations.

1990. He will give you victory.

  1991. Imagine, in your arena,

1992. Jesus who won is stood there

  1993. right with you.

  1994. That changes everything.

  1995. Right?

  1996. That's what he's saying here.

1997. It means that if you're

  1998. competing against a colleague

1999. to win a project in your

  2000. company, and the colleague

2001. is using dirty tactics, you

2002. don't have to worry, because

2003. if Jesus wants you to win

2004. that project, he will win it

2005. for you, so you don't have to

2006. compete in the same way.

  2007. When you have a friend who's

  2008. slandering you and saying

2009. things that aren't true about

2010. you, you don't have to worry

2011. what everyone else thinks or

2012. whether you'll lose your status

  2013. in the friendship group,

2014. because Jesus is in that

2015. ring, is in that friendship

  2016. ring with you.

  2017. So that changes everything.

2018. You can turn the other cheek.

2019. You don't have to feel

  2020. offended.

2021. Because Jesus is there with

2022. you, and he took on the

2023. ultimate offense for you, so

2024. you won't have to feel

  2025. offended.

2026. Changes the way we fight,

  2027. brothers and sisters.

2028. This battle that we have,

2029. when you know that the

2030. battle is won, the way you

  2031. fight it is completely

  2032. different.

2033. You fight by holding fast to

2034. what you have until the end,

2035. knowing that that promise is

  2036. coming.

2037. And then he says at the end,

2038. and this is where I'll finish,

2039. and I will give him the

  2040. morning star.

  2041. I'm not an astrophysicist

  2042. here, but actually the

2043. morning star is the one in

  2044. Revelation 22, when Jesus

  2045. introduces himself as the

  2046. bright morning star.

  2047. The ancient Christian

  2048. astronomers would say that

2049. the morning star would be the

2050. one that comes at the

2051. darkest part of the night,

  2052. which apparently is 2, 3 a.m.

2053. When the night is just as

2054. dark as it can be, the

2055. morning star, as faint as it

  2056. can be, pops up.

2057. And do you know what that

2058. little morning star does from

  2059. that moment on?

  2060. Because that's the darkest

  2061. point of the night.

2062. From that moment on, the sun

  2063. follows.

2064. That morning star pulls in the

  2065. morning.

2066. Morning is broken because of

  2067. that morning star.

2068. We now know that star to

2069. actually, the one that the

  2070. Christian astronomers back

2071. then to be looking at is

  2072. actually Venus.

  2073. What's interesting is after

2074. Venus shows up in our sight,

2075. shortly after the sun shows up,

2076. and that's how each day goes

  2077. around.

2078. Jesus says, I am the morning

  2079. star.

2080. I am the one that will usher in

  2081. the light.

2082. I am the one that comes at the

2083. moment when it is the darkest,

2084. and I am the one that gives

  2085. hope.

2086. When you are in your ring, and

2087. you are battling, and you are

2088. on the ground, and you've been

2089. KO'd because someone slapped you

2090. hard, because people all around

2091. you, you have a target on your

  2092. back.

2093. When you think it's the darkest,

2094. in that moment, Jesus says, and I

2095. will give them the morning star.

2096. I will give them myself.

2097. I will enter the ring.

2098. I will introduce myself already in

2099. the ring, and the victory will be

  2100. yours.

2101. Imagine if we held that truth going

2102. into our work on Tuesday morning.

2103. Imagine if we held that truth going

2104. into our socializing this weekend,

2105. that there are some things that we

2106. don't have to strive for, that we

2107. don't have to battle for.

  2108. It's off our shoulders.

  2109. The victory is his.

2110. Imagine that, just for a second.

2111. The morning star pulls in the

2112. morning in behind it, just like

2113. Jesus pulls in the kingdom of

  2114. heaven just behind him.

2115. That's what he promises us.

2116. He who has ears, let him hear what

2117. the Spirit says to the churches.

2118. Let those of us who have an ear to

2119. hear what is being said right now

2120. from this word, let us take heed to

  2121. that.

  2122. The victory is won.

  2123. The victory is his.

2124. If you sum up that whole book of

  2125. Revelation, that confusing book

2126. filled with imagery, it's simple.

  2127. Jesus wins.

2128. And because of that, we win too.

2129. So every battle we face is no longer

2130. the same battle that we think we're

  2131. fighting.

2132. Can I ask you to continue to imagine

  2133. that?

2134. What that looks like for you as you

  2135. face your battles?

2136. If I can finish with an encouragement,

2137. an exhortation, that is when you leave

2138. this place and you go back to the

2139. battle that you're facing, whatever it

2140. is, the battle that is within you or the

2141. battle that is in front of you, can you

2142. have that victory deep in your heart and

  2143. soul?

2144. That's what Jesus is trying to instill in the

  2145. church in Thyatira.

2146. And I think it's the thing that he wants us to

2147. hold on to until the end.

2148. I'm going to invite Paul now to come up and we're

2149. going to have a short time of response.

2150. Again, just to sing this song.

2151. When we sing songs, this isn't the only way we

  2152. worship.

2153. You guys have been worshiping simply by

2154. listening to this word and just asking God to

  2155. speak to you.

2156. You guys are worshiping by being here.

2157. You guys are worshiping later if you have

2158. lunch, whether it's here or with anyone else.

  2159. Worship is everywhere.

  2160. Don't compartmentalize.

2161. You can worship him anywhere.

2162. He doesn't need us to worship him either.

2163. The rocks outside would cry out and worship him

  2164. if we don't.

2165. But as we sing now, worship music worship, I

  2166. often call, is a low-hanging fruit.

2167. It's an easy way to do it because it's hard

2168. sometimes to worship when you're in your

2169. workplace, in the ring, fighting your

  2170. colleagues.

2171. So worship with us here.

  2172. Worship him here.

2173. And I pray that it will fill you with the

2174. kind of faith that the church in Thyatira

2175. had as they face their trade guilds.

2176. May we face our life here with that same

2177. faith that the victory is his.

2178. Can I invite you to stand?
