  1. So, if you have your Bibles with you, you might like to turn to Revelation chapter 2 again.

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  2. And I'm going to read to you from verse 12 onwards.

  3. I think we've got the readings up on the screen.

  4. Revelation 2, verse 12.

    Revelation 2:12

  5. To the angel of the church in Pergamum write,

  6. These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword.

  7. I know where you live, where Satan has his throne.

  8. Yet you remain true to my name.

  9. You did not renounce your faith in me, not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness,

  10. who was put to death in your city, where Satan lives.

  11. Nevertheless, I have a few things against you.

  12. There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam,

  13. who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin,

  14. so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality.

  15. Likewise, you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.

  16. Repent, therefore.

  17. Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.

  18. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

  19. To the one who is victorious, I will give him some of the hidden manna.

  20. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it,

  21. known only to the one who receives it.

  22. This is the word of the Lord.

  23. Thanks be to God.

  24. So, we come to the church in Pergamum,

  25. a church which, I suppose you would say,

  26. received a kind of mixed report from the risen Christ,

  27. delivered through John.

  28. Just a word about the city of Pergamum today.

  29. If you go to Turkey, it's a city called Bergama.

  30. B-E-R-G-A-M-A.

  31. And it rose to prominence as a city in the ancient world,

  32. round about the 3rd century BC,

  33. during what's called the Attalade period,

  34. when Attalus conquered the city.

  35. It soon became very prominent when the Romans took over,

  36. and in fact became the capital of the Roman province of Asia.

  37. Also there were two notable altars.

  38. One was to Asclepius.

  39. Some of you might know Asclepius if you've been to Kos,

  40. where the first, at least the first hospital we have any remnants of,

  41. is on Kos,

  42. and is dedicated to Asclepius.

  43. Asclepius's symbol is a serpent wrapped around a pole,

  44. and was taken up by medical professions across the world into the modern day.

  45. Asclepius was the god of healing.

  46. The other altar of significance was,

  47. up on the hill above Pergamum,

  48. there was a massive altar dedicated to the Roman god Zeus,

  49. who was the kind of king god of the Roman pantheon of gods.

  50. And because of all this,

  51. there's also a temple dedicated to Augustus and Rome.

  52. And because of this,

  53. it became the centre of the imperial cult of the Roman Empire.

  54. A very Roman city, as you would say.

  55. And I want, by way of introduction tonight,

  56. just to run through some stuff.

  57. Because this was a city,

  58. which the risen Christ describes as the habitat of Satan.

  59. And the challenge of that seems to me,

  60. which is, I think, a similar challenge to what we have today,

  61. although I think we would be a little more uncomfortable

  62. in widely using the language of satanic to describe our culture.

  63. At the same time,

  64. I think you would agree to me,

  65. agree with me,

  66. that there is a lot about our culture,

  67. which is going badly wrong at the current time.

  68. I have described this to congregations in the area

  69. as kind of economic challenges.

  70. It is a surprise to me,

  71. if I'm being quite honest with you,

  72. that the American economy has picked up a little bit,

  73. whereas ours is still flatlining pretty well.

  74. But I think there will be economic challenges

  75. across the West,

  76. and particularly across Europe,

  77. in these coming days.

  78. And we feel that at home

  79. when we read about people

  80. who are the victims of the so-called economic crisis.

  81. Some of you, maybe some of them,

  82. I don't know.

  83. And we talk about the environmental challenges of the world.

  84. I think they're huge.

  85. And, you know,

  86. you have to take your own view

  87. on what you make of the climate science and all that,

  88. so I'm not here to tell you what to think.

  89. But it does seem,

  90. although, you know,

  91. one would say in terms of weather patterns,

  92. it's happened over a fairly short period to date,

  93. I think it's a tendency at the moment

  94. that we're looking at

  95. that weather patterns are changing.

  96. And when it comes to trying to fix the planet,

  97. the idea is, you know,

  98. that we will reduce our carbon dioxide emissions

  99. and that's going to cost a lot of money,

  100. which has got to be factored in

  101. to the cost of living.

  102. Nobody who manufactures stuff

  103. isn't going to pass the cost

  104. of environmental responsibility.

  105. They're not going to pay that themselves.

  106. They're going to pass it on to the customer

  107. through the goods and services

  108. that they provide.

  109. And then, really seriously,

  110. the emotional challenges of our day.

  111. In the Times today,

  112. there's a big article about people in their 20s,

  113. a large number of whom are not at work

  114. because they are mentally unwell.

  115. They're suffering from anxiety,

  116. depression, these things.

  117. Things that we shouldn't take lightly,

  118. but we should ask questions about,

  119. well, what kind of a society is it

  120. that's creating people

  121. in the prime of their lives

  122. who can't even go to work

  123. because they're not well?

  124. I think I have gone as far as saying,

  125. you know, one of the things that troubles me

  126. about our environment,

  127. our culture at the moment is,

  128. it seems to make people ill.

  129. So I want to talk to you today

  130. about the challenge of evangelism

  131. in a hostile environment.

  132. Get round to Pergamum in a few minutes,

  133. but that basically is their lot.

  134. How do you set about

  135. trying to win people for Christ

  136. in a city where Satan

  137. and the Roman Empire hold sway?

  138. Both of whom had a reputation

  139. for trying to destroy organizations

  140. or agencies or people

  141. who posed any threat whatsoever

  142. in their direction.

  143. So I want just to think for a moment,

  144. if I may, about these challenges.

  145. And I think the challenges of Pergamum

  146. are the challenges of today.

  147. And I want to just draw your attention to,

  148. it's not our set text this evening,

  149. but I just want to draw your attention

  150. to Acts chapter 17.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  151. Before I do that,

  152. I'm going to talk to you about six things

  153. that I think are important

  154. in our evangelistic engagement

  155. with a hostile culture.

  156. The first thing is,

  157. we need to be praying Christians.

  158. In Ephesians chapter 6 and verse 18,

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  159. the great apostle bids Christians

  160. to pray at all times in the Spirit.

  161. Paul's not that interested

  162. in the kind of prayers

  163. where people just gabble away

  164. or just say stuff for impact or effect.

  165. He's interested in prayer in the Spirit.

  166. Prayer directed to God,

  167. directed by God,

  168. in the power of the Holy Spirit.

  169. But Acts 17 is where I want to draw your attention to.

  170. And I want to draw your attention to it

  171. because it is the only example

  172. in the New Testament

  173. of a sermon preached to Gentiles,

  174. i.e. non-Jewish believers.

  175. Paul, believe it or not,

  176. on his missionary journeys,

  177. had a plan.

  178. The plan was,

  179. he would go to what you might call

  180. the warm contacts.

  181. He'd go down to the synagogue

  182. and start preaching

  183. that Jesus was the Messiah.

  184. And he'd use,

  185. it's a challenge to preachers,

  186. he would use the Old Testament to do that.

  187. Didn't have a New Testament then.

  188. And in Athens,

  189. on the Areopagus,

  190. which is a hill

  191. just outside the wall of the city today,

  192. Paul preached to a crowd of people.

  193. We don't have time tonight

  194. to go in depth

  195. into the content of his sermon,

  196. but it is fascinating to look at

  197. in relation to the fact

  198. that Paul is speaking

  199. to Gentiles,

  200. non-Jewish people.

  201. And Paul says,

  202. in Acts chapter 17,

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  203. that before he addressed the crowd,

  204. he said to them,

  205. you know,

  206. as I walked around your city,

  207. I see you're a very religious people,

  208. he said.

  209. In fact,

  210. he said,

  211. you know,

  212. I can tell that

  213. by the number of altars there are.

  214. He said,

  215. and I came across an altar

  216. to an unknown God.

  217. He said,

  218. so I want to,

  219. this is Paul's sense of humour,

  220. right?

  221. I mean,

  222. you don't have to laugh.

  223. Paul said,

  224. I found this altar

  225. dedicated to the unknown God,

  226. but I'm going to tell you

  227. about the God you can know.

  228. And proceeds to talk

  229. about Jesus,

  230. the Messiah

  231. and the coming judge,

  232. who created the world

  233. and all that therein is it.

  234. But before Paul got round

  235. to his message,

  236. he had spent time

  237. observing the lives

  238. of these Athenians.

  239. So he could kind of

  240. get the vibe

  241. of their culture.

  242. So he could address them

  243. in a way

  244. that they might understand.

  245. In Acts chapter 17

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  246. and verse 23,

  247. we read how Paul

  248. engages them

  249. by quoting to them

  250. from their culture.

  251. He quotes

  252. a verse

  253. of a poem.

  254. I mean,

  255. in my book,

  256. it's not much of a poem

  257. because it doesn't rhyme,

  258. but the quote is,

  259. we are his offspring.

  260. Paul uses

  261. what you might call

  262. the culture

  263. of local creative art

  264. to try and communicate

  265. with these people.

  266. Oh,

  267. that in our churches

  268. we could reignite

  269. our imaginations

  270. to communicate

  271. in such a way

  272. that connects

  273. with our culture

  274. rather than flies

  275. over the heads

  276. of those

  277. who show up.

  278. And then there is

  279. a challenge

  280. in Acts chapter 17

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  281. and verse 30.

  282. Let me read that

  283. to you.

  284. Paul says,

  285. in the past

  286. God overlooked

  287. such ignorance.

  288. That's a kind

  289. of polite way.

  290. What Paul was

  291. basically saying to them

  292. is,

  293. in the past

  294. God overlooked

  295. your ignorance.

  296. He said,

  297. in the past

  298. he overlooked that,

  299. but now

  300. he commends

  301. people everywhere

  302. to repent.

  303. I think that,

  304. you know,

  305. I had a,

  306. what's called

  307. a peripatetic ministry.

  308. It sounds highfalutin.

  309. What it means is

  310. I went to a different

  311. church every Sunday.

  312. And what I would say

  313. is that

  314. there was,

  315. you know,

  316. quite a lot of history

  317. in the sermons,

  318. quite a lot of Greek,

  319. you know,

  320. look how smart I am,

  321. I quote Greek.

  322. Greek.

  323. But,

  324. but,

  325. what most

  326. messages I've

  327. listened to

  328. were very low on

  329. was challenge.

  330. I felt like,

  331. you know that

  332. proverb we have

  333. in English,

  334. you know,

  335. you can take a horse

  336. to water,

  337. but you

  338. can't make it drink.

  339. A lot of preaching

  340. felt to me like that,

  341. you know,

  342. the horses

  343. have showed up

  344. to listen

  345. and they've been

  346. taken to the edge

  347. of the river

  348. and then the preacher

  349. takes us back

  350. and gives a blessing

  351. and we all go home.

  352. No,

  353. people need to be

  354. challenged.

  355. And my experience

  356. of evangelism

  357. amongst men

  358. in particular

  359. is

  360. the firmer the challenge

  361. the more likely

  362. you are to get

  363. a response.

  364. And then

  365. we know this

  366. from 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  367. chapter 4

  368. and verse 2

  369. that we're called.

  370. So in a lot of churches,

  371. evangelical churches

  372. in particular,

  373. people think

  374. that the moment

  375. that somebody's

  376. converted,

  377. their job is done.

  378. Wrong.

  379. It's a new beginning,

  380. it's a new start.

  381. Paul says to this

  382. young church

  383. Timothy

  384. and second,

  385. young church leader

  386. in 2 Timothy,

  387. preach the word,

  388. be prepared

  389. in season

  390. and out of season,

  391. correct,

  392. rebuke and encourage

  393. with great patience

  394. and careful instruction.

  395. what did Paul

  396. imagine

  397. that Timothy

  398. might preach?

  399. Did Paul think,

  400. sorry to use

  401. Anglican speak

  402. for a moment,

  403. that it would be

  404. highly effective

  405. for some preacher

  406. to stand up

  407. and give a few

  408. garbled thoughts

  409. on the collect

  410. of the day?

  411. No, he didn't think

  412. that at all.

  413. In chapter 3,

  414. Paul tells us

  415. exactly what he wants

  416. Timothy to preach about.

  417. 2 Timothy 3,

  418. 16,

  419. all scripture

  420. is God-breathed

  421. and is useful

  422. for teaching,

  423. rebuking,

  424. correcting

  425. and training

  426. in righteousness.

  427. Paul didn't imagine

  428. that preachers

  429. could just stand up

  430. and do their own

  431. fang.

  432. He imagined

  433. that the faithful

  434. preacher will stand up

  435. with the word of God

  436. in his hand

  437. and to the best

  438. of his or her ability

  439. will give exposition

  440. to that.

  441. I said that

  442. every

  443. moment of

  444. any approach

  445. to evangelism

  446. needs to be

  447. surrounded by prayer.

  448. My experience

  449. was for every

  450. new Christian

  451. we had in the church

  452. that I was minister

  453. at,

  454. that we had to spend

  455. a lot of time

  456. and resource

  457. in taking somebody

  458. across the line

  459. and giving their life

  460. to Christ

  461. to kind of

  462. keep them there,

  463. to stop them

  464. from falling away

  465. and becoming

  466. backslidden.

  467. An important part

  468. of that

  469. was making sure

  470. that new converts

  471. were prayed for.

  472. Anybody remember

  473. Operation Andrew?

  474. My memory is

  475. that what it

  476. asked church members,

  477. people like you,

  478. to do

  479. was to split

  480. into groups

  481. of three

  482. meeting in

  483. your homes

  484. or in the coffee

  485. shop or wherever

  486. and the three

  487. of you

  488. would bring

  489. the names

  490. of three people

  491. who you really

  492. wanted to

  493. play a part

  494. in bringing

  495. them to Christ.

  496. You would then

  497. pray together

  498. so you'd have

  499. nine people

  500. to pray for

  501. and three of you

  502. praying for those

  503. nine people.

  504. I can't

  505. think for a

  506. moment

  507. why we don't

  508. do that today.

  509. Our experience

  510. back then

  511. and different

  512. time I get

  513. that but our

  514. experience back

  515. then was

  516. a remarkable

  517. number of people

  518. came through

  519. to trust

  520. Christ

  521. not

  522. as a direct

  523. result of us

  524. praying

  525. but I can't

  526. help thinking

  527. that our

  528. prayer

  529. for these

  530. people

  531. men and

  532. women

  533. went

  534. you know

  535. it was a

  536. wasted time.

  537. There was a

  538. book some of

  539. you may have

  540. read some

  541. years ago

  542. which was

  543. called

  544. What Happens

  545. When Women

  546. Prayed

  547. and the

  548. stories and

  549. testimonies

  550. that came out

  551. of these

  552. groups of

  553. women

  554. that met

  555. I think

  556. they called

  557. them Lydia

  558. groups or

  559. something like

  560. that and

  561. they pray

  562. together and

  563. there's some

  564. amazing outcomes

  565. of those

  566. prayers.

  567. Look we

  568. think there's a

  569. lot of stuff

  570. to do today

  571. to engage

  572. with our

  573. culture but

  574. trust me

  575. there is a

  576. lot of

  577. praying that

  578. needs to be

  579. done as

  580. well.

  581. I want to

  582. go on just

  583. before I talk

  584. about Pergamon

  585. very briefly

  586. to talk about

  587. this fine

  588. balance between

  589. collusion and

  590. compromise and

  591. I want to say

  592. to you to start

  593. with always

  594. remember the

  595. church isn't

  596. I mean the

  597. church is

  598. institutionalized

  599. it's certainly

  600. the church of

  601. England is which

  602. is the only one

  603. I can speak

  604. of with any

  605. inner knowledge.

  606. The church is

  607. not an

  608. institution in

  609. a normal sense

  610. it's a living

  611. body.

  612. I read an

  613. article recently

  614. in the

  615. American

  616. New American

  617. Scientist

  618. American

  619. Scientist I

  620. think it's

  621. called and

  622. it was talking

  623. about how

  624. every day

  625. every movement

  626. everything we

  627. do is a

  628. miracle.

  629. Talked about

  630. how avoiding

  631. serious disease

  632. could be down

  633. to a very

  634. minimal factor

  635. like at the

  636. right time

  637. you coughed

  638. and by coughing

  639. you expel

  640. from your body

  641. something that

  642. if it had taken

  643. hold in your

  644. body would

  645. have caused

  646. you serious

  647. illness.

  648. It talked

  649. about the

  650. signals your

  651. brain sends

  652. out to do

  653. a very

  654. simple thing

  655. like blinking

  656. your eyes.

  657. And as we

  658. know in

  659. 1 Corinthians

  660. 12

  661. Paul speaks

  662. about the

  663. church as a

  664. body.

  665. And you

  666. know only

  667. too well

  668. that there

  669. doesn't need to

  670. be much wrong

  671. with your body

  672. for it to lose

  673. its balance

  674. and for you

  675. to be

  676. seriously

  677. undermined

  678. in your

  679. ability to

  680. do things

  681. because of

  682. that.

  683. We won't

  684. talk about

  685. the tongue.

  686. James does

  687. that and

  688. warns us

  689. about the

  690. tongue and

  691. how the

  692. same tongue

  693. that blesses

  694. God is the

  695. same tongue

  696. that we used

  697. to curse

  698. men and

  699. women with.

  700. But just

  701. the everyday

  702. balance.

  703. You know

  704. I'm sure

  705. we should

  706. wake up

  707. thanking

  708. God and

  709. praying to

  710. him that

  711. God would

  712. maintain our

  713. physical balance

  714. in our

  715. health and

  716. the reason

  717. why Paul

  718. calls the

  719. church a

  720. body is

  721. that he

  722. makes the

  723. point that

  724. when one

  725. part of

  726. that body

  727. is out of

  728. kilter with

  729. the rest

  730. the whole

  731. body is

  732. impacted.

  733. He also

  734. makes the

  735. point that

  736. we can't

  737. all be

  738. hands.

  739. We can't

  740. all be

  741. feet.

  742. We can't

  743. all be

  744. heads.

  745. The church

  746. is a body

  747. with different

  748. parts as

  749. Paul.

  750. And by

  751. that he

  752. means we

  753. are a

  754. group of

  755. people who

  756. are gifted

  757. by God

  758. with spiritual

  759. gifts in

  760. order to

  761. glorify God

  762. to serve

  763. the church

  764. and to

  765. bless the

  766. world.

  767. So

  768. the church

  769. is a

  770. living body

  771. and the

  772. issue of

  773. balance is

  774. a huge

  775. issue.

  776. But here's

  777. a question

  778. which I

  779. think is

  780. impossible to

  781. answer and

  782. I feel it's

  783. a bit unfair

  784. asking you.

  785. But how do

  786. we know

  787. when we've

  788. crossed the

  789. line between

  790. compromise and

  791. collusion?

  792. I'm making

  793. the assumption

  794. that compromise

  795. isn't always

  796. wrong.

  797. wrong.

  798. But it can

  799. quickly become

  800. the foothills

  801. of unhelpful

  802. collusion.

  803. So now

  804. the church

  805. in Pergamum

  806. and the

  807. risen Christ

  808. through his

  809. letter

  810. delivered by

  811. John

  812. starts by

  813. saying

  814. talking about

  815. sorry

  816. let me

  817. turn over

  818. talks about

  819. these are

  820. the words

  821. of him

  822. who has

  823. the sharp

  824. double-edged

  825. sword.

  826. At the

  827. time that

  828. John was

  829. writing there

  830. were two

  831. kinds of

  832. weapon that

  833. were described

  834. as a sword.

  835. one was

  836. a makaria

  837. which is

  838. more like

  839. a big

  840. dagger

  841. than a

  842. sword.

  843. And the

  844. other was

  845. the

  846. ramphosa

  847. which is

  848. a proper

  849. sword

  850. both sides

  851. of which

  852. were home

  853. to be

  854. very very

  855. sharp.

  856. And it

  857. was said

  858. that

  859. soldiers

  860. could

  861. split things

  862. down the

  863. middle very

  864. easily.

  865. with their

  866. ramphosa

  867. with their

  868. big

  869. swords.

  870. That's the

  871. word that's

  872. used here.

  873. The other

  874. word is

  875. used in

  876. the New

  877. Testament.

  878. I think

  879. it's

  880. something like

  881. Hebrews

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  882. chapter 12

  883. and verse

  884. 10 which

  885. talks about

  886. the double-edged

  887. sword.

  888. That's not

  889. a ramphosa

  890. that is

  891. a makaria

  892. that's the

  893. short dagger

  894. thing.

  895. Of course

  896. scholars have

  897. written pages

  898. on the

  899. difference

  900. between the

  901. use of

  902. those two

  903. words for

  904. sword.

  905. what it

  906. means is

  907. that this

  908. double-edged

  909. sword that

  910. the risen

  911. Christ has

  912. tells us

  913. of his

  914. sovereignty,

  915. his double

  916. sovereignty.

  917. He is

  918. sovereign of

  919. all that

  920. goes on

  921. on the

  922. earth but

  923. he's also

  924. sovereign of

  925. what will

  926. be.

  927. so there's

  928. an element

  929. of the

  930. amazing

  931. authority of

  932. Jesus with

  933. this double

  934. -edged sword

  935. but there is

  936. also a

  937. measure of

  938. judgment.

  939. It's a word

  940. that we don't

  941. really like to

  942. think about too

  943. much in the

  944. church today

  945. but that's

  946. the meaning

  947. of that

  948. symbolism.

  949. I know

  950. where you

  951. live.

  952. It sounds

  953. like a

  954. threat doesn't

  955. it when you

  956. read it out

  957. like that?

  958. I know

  959. where you

  960. live.

  961. Where Satan

  962. has his

  963. throne.

  964. Again

  965. wide

  966. speculation as

  967. to exactly

  968. what John

  969. was referring

  970. to there.

  971. Some think

  972. it was

  973. that altar

  974. to Zeus

  975. on the

  976. hillside

  977. there.

  978. Some think

  979. it was the

  980. temple of

  981. Asclepius.

  982. Some,

  983. probably me,

  984. think it was

  985. the temple

  986. dedicated to

  987. Augustus and

  988. Rome which

  989. made Pergamum

  990. the centre

  991. of the

  992. cult,

  993. the Roman

  994. Empire.

  995. What the

  996. risen Christ

  997. likes about

  998. them is

  999. they remain

  1000. true to the

  1001. name of

  1002. Jesus.

  1003. He says

  1004. you didn't

  1005. renounce your

  1006. faith in me

  1007. and he

  1008. gives only

  1009. one example

  1010. but one

  1011. example of

  1012. somebody who

  1013. is so

  1014. faithful to

  1015. Jesus under

  1016. the threat

  1017. of this

  1018. hostile

  1019. culture that

  1020. it cost him

  1021. his life

  1022. and to pass

  1023. my faithful

  1024. witness who

  1025. is put to

  1026. death in

  1027. your city

  1028. where Satan

  1029. lives.

  1030. I mean

  1031. imagine that

  1032. there isn't

  1033. crisis to

  1034. them.

  1035. I know

  1036. where you

  1037. live and

  1038. it's where

  1039. Satan lives.

  1040. And by

  1041. and large

  1042. I'm impressed

  1043. by your

  1044. faithfulness.

  1045. I'm impressed

  1046. that you

  1047. don't collude

  1048. with the

  1049. cult of

  1050. Rome.

  1051. And I'm

  1052. impressed

  1053. that you

  1054. resist

  1055. the

  1056. satanic

  1057. forces at

  1058. work amongst

  1059. you.

  1060. people.

  1061. But then

  1062. he goes

  1063. on and

  1064. says

  1065. nevertheless

  1066. nevertheless

  1067. and so

  1068. reminds me

  1069. of my own

  1070. school reports

  1071. I think

  1072. you could

  1073. summarize my

  1074. school reports

  1075. as yes

  1076. but.

  1077. Mike

  1078. sets himself

  1079. extremely low

  1080. standards and

  1081. consistently fails

  1082. to achieve

  1083. them.

  1084. So these

  1085. people in

  1086. this awfully

  1087. hostile culture

  1088. were faithful

  1089. in the face

  1090. of martyrdom.

  1091. But here's

  1092. what the risen

  1093. Christ thinks

  1094. they need to

  1095. pay attention

  1096. to.

  1097. Thinks that

  1098. their balance

  1099. as the body

  1100. of Christ

  1101. is being

  1102. put out

  1103. of kilter

  1104. by these

  1105. forces.

  1106. He says

  1107. there are

  1108. some of

  1109. you who

  1110. hold to

  1111. the teaching

  1112. of Balaam

  1113. who taught

  1114. Balak to

  1115. entice the

  1116. Israelites to

  1117. sin so

  1118. that they

  1119. did two

  1120. things

  1121. unacceptable.

  1122. They ate

  1123. food that

  1124. had already

  1125. been sacrificed

  1126. to idols.

  1127. In other

  1128. words not

  1129. only Jewish

  1130. people would

  1131. find that

  1132. unclean but

  1133. Christians would

  1134. find it

  1135. unclean as

  1136. well.

  1137. And then

  1138. they committed

  1139. sexual

  1140. immorality.

  1141. It would

  1142. be nice to

  1143. say wouldn't

  1144. it that

  1145. today's church

  1146. is free of

  1147. all that.

  1148. You know

  1149. we don't do

  1150. that stuff.

  1151. Except

  1152. remember you

  1153. know the job

  1154. I had was

  1155. the exercise

  1156. of discipline

  1157. across 256

  1158. churches

  1159. in a large

  1160. area.

  1161. I would

  1162. love to put

  1163. my hand on

  1164. my heart

  1165. and say to

  1166. you we

  1167. didn't have

  1168. any of

  1169. that.

  1170. When I was

  1171. a parish

  1172. priest I

  1173. found the

  1174. chairman of

  1175. churches

  1176. together

  1177. where's

  1178. Tim?

  1179. Not him.

  1180. Chairman of

  1181. churches

  1182. together and

  1183. the secretary

  1184. of the

  1185. PCC.

  1186. I don't

  1187. quite know

  1188. how to

  1189. put this.

  1190. Let's

  1191. just say

  1192. they were

  1193. naked in

  1194. the middle

  1195. of a

  1196. wood and

  1197. my dog

  1198. discovered

  1199. them when

  1200. I was

  1201. walking with

  1202. my dog.

  1203. I had to

  1204. put my

  1205. hand on

  1206. my hand

  1207. and say

  1208. I have

  1209. come across

  1210. none of

  1211. this sexual

  1212. immorality

  1213. of the

  1214. church but

  1215. friends I

  1216. have.

  1217. And part

  1218. of the

  1219. problem is

  1220. our culture

  1221. is obsessed

  1222. by sex.

  1223. So much

  1224. so it

  1225. has perverted

  1226. our

  1227. understanding

  1228. of what

  1229. love is.

  1230. The Bible

  1231. word for

  1232. love is the

  1233. word agape.

  1234. You know

  1235. that.

  1236. It's a

  1237. word that

  1238. doesn't

  1239. primarily

  1240. call upon

  1241. our heart

  1242. strings.

  1243. It's not

  1244. about what

  1245. we feel.

  1246. it's how

  1247. we set

  1248. our will.

  1249. How do

  1250. you think

  1251. if Jesus

  1252. said love

  1253. your enemies

  1254. how would

  1255. that work

  1256. if he

  1257. really meant

  1258. desire your

  1259. enemies?

  1260. It would

  1261. be an

  1262. impossible.

  1263. No we

  1264. need to

  1265. think about

  1266. love and

  1267. loving our

  1268. neighbor as

  1269. wanting the

  1270. best for

  1271. that person

  1272. even if we

  1273. don't necessarily

  1274. like them.

  1275. you know

  1276. what would

  1277. that do

  1278. to the

  1279. debate about

  1280. asylum seekers

  1281. if we fed

  1282. that understanding

  1283. of love into

  1284. that?

  1285. Look

  1286. at

  1287. the teaching

  1288. of Balaam

  1289. actually Balaam

  1290. it's very

  1291. interesting that

  1292. the word

  1293. Balaam

  1294. the name

  1295. Balaam

  1296. and the

  1297. name

  1298. Nicolation

  1299. followers of

  1300. Nicholas.

  1301. So in

  1302. Hebrew

  1303. the word

  1304. Balaam

  1305. is made

  1306. up of

  1307. a root

  1308. word which

  1309. means to

  1310. conquer

  1311. and then

  1312. which is

  1313. balai

  1314. and then

  1315. the word

  1316. aham

  1317. which means

  1318. people.

  1319. So the

  1320. word

  1321. Balaam

  1322. means

  1323. conquering

  1324. people.

  1325. the word

  1326. Nicholas

  1327. is a

  1328. mixture of

  1329. two other

  1330. Greek words

  1331. one is

  1332. Nikan

  1333. which means

  1334. to conquer

  1335. and

  1336. Laos

  1337. which means

  1338. people.

  1339. I mean

  1340. whether these

  1341. were two

  1342. distinct groups

  1343. of people

  1344. who encoded

  1345. language

  1346. remember

  1347. we said

  1348. that this

  1349. book is

  1350. apocryphal

  1351. it's written

  1352. in a hidden

  1353. language

  1354. so that

  1355. people

  1356. wouldn't

  1357. necessarily

  1358. understand it

  1359. if they

  1360. didn't

  1361. know the

  1362. keys to

  1363. understanding

  1364. it.

  1365. But these

  1366. two names

  1367. given to

  1368. these two

  1369. heresies

  1370. actually both

  1371. meant the

  1372. same.

  1373. They were

  1374. about

  1375. controlling

  1376. subjugating

  1377. people.

  1378. Is there

  1379. anything

  1380. further away

  1381. from the

  1382. gospel community

  1383. than the

  1384. desire to

  1385. control

  1386. people?

  1387. Is there

  1388. anything

  1389. that could

  1390. be worse

  1391. in a

  1392. relationship

  1393. in a

  1394. marriage

  1395. where one

  1396. person seeks

  1397. to control

  1398. the other?

  1399. And

  1400. this

  1401. these

  1402. heresies

  1403. led

  1404. people

  1405. into

  1406. very

  1407. dark

  1408. behaviors

  1409. dietary

  1410. and sexual

  1411. immorality

  1412. and the

  1413. risen

  1414. Christ

  1415. has a

  1416. very clear

  1417. message

  1418. verse 16

  1419. Repent

  1420. therefore

  1421. as a

  1422. consequence

  1423. of this

  1424. collusion

  1425. with these

  1426. people in

  1427. the church

  1428. repent

  1429. of that

  1430. otherwise

  1431. I will

  1432. soon come

  1433. to you

  1434. and will

  1435. fight against

  1436. them with

  1437. the sword

  1438. of my

  1439. mouth

  1440. they will

  1441. come

  1442. under

  1443. judgment

  1444. and it

  1445. will be a

  1446. dark day

  1447. for them

  1448. and for

  1449. the church

  1450. of God

  1451. why?

  1452. Because in

  1453. their midst

  1454. they tolerated

  1455. heretical

  1456. teaching

  1457. that sought

  1458. to control

  1459. the people

  1460. of God

  1461. rather than

  1462. the God

  1463. whom we

  1464. worship

  1465. who empowers

  1466. us

  1467. with his

  1468. Holy Spirit

  1469. God

  1470. I never

  1471. understood

  1472. years ago

  1473. when I

  1474. was ordained

  1475. I was

  1476. ordained

  1477. in

  1478. Canterbury

  1479. Cathedral

  1480. I didn't

  1481. live in

  1482. Canterbury

  1483. or even

  1484. in Kent

  1485. as such

  1486. I lived

  1487. in Croydon

  1488. and the

  1489. Church of

  1490. England

  1491. with this

  1492. kind of

  1493. slightly

  1494. mixed up

  1495. thinking

  1496. made a

  1497. archdeaconry

  1498. of the

  1499. Diocese of

  1500. Canterbury

  1501. completely

  1502. separate

  1503. from the

  1504. Diocese of

  1505. Canterbury

  1506. and there was

  1507. a reason for

  1508. that

  1509. the reason

  1510. was that

  1511. the Archbishop

  1512. of Canterbury

  1513. then had

  1514. his summer

  1515. palace

  1516. in Croydon

  1517. and it was

  1518. felt that

  1519. would be wrong

  1520. of him to

  1521. leave his

  1522. diocese when

  1523. he went

  1524. on his

  1525. holiday

  1526. so if you

  1527. can't take

  1528. Mohammed to

  1529. the mountain

  1530. move the

  1531. mountain to

  1532. Mohammed

  1533. so I was

  1534. getting ordained

  1535. there

  1536. and it

  1537. was a

  1538. great

  1539. privilege

  1540. and Donald

  1541. Coggan

  1542. was the

  1543. Archbishop

  1544. of Canterbury

  1545. and for

  1546. the

  1547. ordination

  1548. retreat

  1549. we were

  1550. invited to

  1551. stay in

  1552. the palace

  1553. at Canterbury

  1554. with the

  1555. Archbishop

  1556. and Mrs

  1557. Coggan

  1558. who came

  1559. down to

  1560. breakfast

  1561. every day

  1562. and we

  1563. had normal

  1564. chat over

  1565. breakfast

  1566. Coggan

  1567. was very

  1568. against the

  1569. idea of

  1570. the

  1571. ordination

  1572. retreat

  1573. as a

  1574. kind of

  1575. massive

  1576. wind up

  1577. and you

  1578. know

  1579. when they

  1580. did that

  1581. I mean

  1582. people who

  1583. had been

  1584. in college

  1585. for three

  1586. years

  1587. had nervous

  1588. breakdowns

  1589. and couldn't

  1590. show up

  1591. in the

  1592. cathedral

  1593. on the

  1594. Sunday

  1595. morning

  1596. they were

  1597. so

  1598. mentally

  1599. disturbed

  1600. by it

  1601. Coggan

  1602. was very

  1603. relaxed

  1604. and it

  1605. was just

  1606. at the

  1607. time

  1608. that the

  1609. Bishop of

  1610. Durham

  1611. had declared

  1612. that there

  1613. was no

  1614. such thing

  1615. as a

  1616. physical

  1617. resurrection

  1618. of Jesus

  1619. do you

  1620. remember

  1621. that

  1622. and it

  1623. was terrible

  1624. you know

  1625. harush over

  1626. that

  1627. and quite

  1628. rightly so

  1629. in many

  1630. ways

  1631. and some

  1632. upstart

  1633. of an

  1634. ordinand

  1635. not like

  1636. me

  1637. said to the

  1638. Archbishop

  1639. across the

  1640. table

  1641. so are you

  1642. going to

  1643. throw him

  1644. out then

  1645. my Archbishop

  1646. choked over

  1647. his boiled

  1648. egg

  1649. and said

  1650. well I have

  1651. no means

  1652. to throw

  1653. him out

  1654. and

  1655. the upstart

  1656. ordinand

  1657. said what

  1658. do you

  1659. mean

  1660. he said

  1661. there's

  1662. been a

  1663. studious

  1664. attempt

  1665. in the

  1666. church's

  1667. disciplinary

  1668. measures

  1669. to avoid

  1670. any

  1671. disciplinary

  1672. measure

  1673. which would

  1674. involve

  1675. wrong teaching

  1676. or heresy

  1677. that bit

  1678. of legislation

  1679. I think

  1680. put together

  1681. in 1972

  1682. was replaced

  1683. at the end

  1684. of the

  1685. 1990s

  1686. which came

  1687. into force

  1688. I think

  1689. in 2002

  1690. called the

  1691. clergy

  1692. discipline

  1693. measure

  1694. I mean

  1695. you can

  1696. get thrown

  1697. out of

  1698. the church

  1699. of England

  1700. if you

  1701. baptise

  1702. somebody

  1703. twice

  1704. but you

  1705. can deny

  1706. the resurrection

  1707. or say

  1708. that Christianity

  1709. from next

  1710. week onwards

  1711. will be

  1712. about nudity

  1713. and nobody

  1714. can do

  1715. anything

  1716. about it

  1717. it's amazing

  1718. isn't it

  1719. I mean

  1720. I was one

  1721. of them

  1722. you know

  1723. still am

  1724. I mean

  1725. so

  1726. the issue

  1727. of how

  1728. do we

  1729. tackle

  1730. in our

  1731. churches

  1732. wrong teaching

  1733. I think

  1734. is an

  1735. interesting

  1736. one

  1737. who

  1738. adjudicates

  1739. what is

  1740. wrong teaching

  1741. who decides

  1742. on that

  1743. and the

  1744. Roman Catholic

  1745. Church

  1746. has a

  1747. magisterium

  1748. that does

  1749. make decisions

  1750. about these

  1751. things

  1752. and you

  1753. know

  1754. I mean

  1755. who's the

  1756. German

  1757. cardinal

  1758. who got

  1759. made

  1760. the Pope

  1761. retired

  1762. early

  1763. Ratzinger

  1764. I thought

  1765. Ratzinger

  1766. I mean

  1767. he's a

  1768. highly

  1769. cultured

  1770. and

  1771. intellectual

  1772. man

  1773. as a

  1774. matter

  1775. of fact

  1776. but he

  1777. was kind

  1778. of hired

  1779. by the

  1780. Pope

  1781. as a

  1782. sort of

  1783. you know

  1784. the Pope's

  1785. kind of

  1786. attack dog

  1787. to any

  1788. province

  1789. of the

  1790. Roman Catholic

  1791. Church

  1792. that decided

  1793. to go off

  1794. on its own

  1795. and teach

  1796. things that

  1797. the church

  1798. found

  1799. unacceptable

  1800. you may

  1801. remember

  1802. there was

  1803. quite a lot

  1804. of press

  1805. in that

  1806. the Roman

  1807. Catholic

  1808. Church's

  1809. resistance

  1810. to

  1811. same

  1812. sex

  1813. relationships

  1814. drew a

  1815. lot of

  1816. attention

  1817. to the

  1818. count

  1819. I think

  1820. it's got

  1821. some

  1822. very

  1823. highfalutin

  1824. term

  1825. the council

  1826. that looks

  1827. at all

  1828. this

  1829. and the

  1830. Church of

  1831. England

  1832. doesn't

  1833. have that

  1834. and I

  1835. think

  1836. independent

  1837. churches

  1838. probably would

  1839. struggle to

  1840. work out

  1841. well who

  1842. would be

  1843. responsible

  1844. for

  1845. dealing

  1846. with

  1847. wrong

  1848. teaching

  1849. I

  1850. mean you

  1851. might say

  1852. the senior

  1853. pastor

  1854. that's

  1855. okay

  1856. as long

  1857. as it's

  1858. not the

  1859. senior

  1860. pastor

  1861. who's

  1862. doing

  1863. the wrong

  1864. teaching

  1865. but

  1866. surely

  1867. surely

  1868. you can't

  1869. read this

  1870. letter to

  1871. Pergamum

  1872. without

  1873. thinking

  1874. there ought

  1875. to be

  1876. some

  1877. mechanism

  1878. to stop

  1879. people

  1880. just

  1881. turning

  1882. up in

  1883. churches

  1884. and teaching

  1885. what the

  1886. hell they

  1887. like

  1888. I mean

  1889. does that

  1890. seem mad

  1891. to you

  1892. so

  1893. they were

  1894. called to

  1895. repentance

  1896. and

  1897. then

  1898. the risen

  1899. Christ

  1900. says to

  1901. them

  1902. I will

  1903. soon

  1904. come to

  1905. you

  1906. if you

  1907. don't

  1908. do

  1909. this

  1910. if you

  1911. don't

  1912. repent

  1913. I'll

  1914. soon

  1915. come to

  1916. you

  1917. and

  1918. we'll

  1919. fight

  1920. against

  1921. them

  1922. with

  1923. the

  1924. sword

  1925. in my

  1926. mouth

  1927. verse

  1928. 17

  1929. whoever

  1930. has

  1931. ears

  1932. let

  1933. them

  1934. hear

  1935. what

  1936. the

  1937. spirit

  1938. says

  1939. to

  1940. the

  1941. churches

  1942. may

  1943. that

  1944. be

  1945. our

  1946. prayer

  1947. friends

  1948. as we

  1949. meet

  1950. together

  1951. in this

  1952. Lent

  1953. season

  1954. that the

  1955. church

  1956. today

  1957. in the

  1958. light of

  1959. this

  1960. antagonistic

  1961. culture

  1962. might be

  1963. really

  1964. attuned

  1965. to what

  1966. the

  1967. spirit

  1968. says

  1969. to

  1970. us

  1971. and

  1972. then

  1973. a

  1974. common

  1975. theme

  1976. in these

  1977. letters

  1978. the

  1979. promise

  1980. to

  1981. the

  1982. one

  1983. who

  1984. is

  1985. victorious

  1986. I

  1987. will

  1988. give

  1989. some

  1990. of

  1991. the

  1992. hidden

  1993. manner

  1994. and

  1995. this

  1996. is

  1997. a

  1998. rather

  1999. kind

  2000. of

  2001. curious

  2002. legend

  2003. that

  2004. grew up

  2005. within

  2006. Judaism

  2007. and

  2008. as far

  2009. as we

  2010. can

  2011. tell

  2012. it

  2013. doesn't

  2014. have

  2015. much

  2016. authenticity

  2017. in

  2018. history

  2019. but

  2020. what

  2021. was

  2022. thought

  2023. happened

  2024. was

  2025. that

  2026. you

  2027. remember

  2028. when the

  2029. Jews

  2030. were in

  2031. the

  2032. wilderness

  2033. you

  2034. can

  2035. read

  2036. about

  2037. it

  2038. in

  2039. the

  2040. book

  2041. of

  2042. numbers

  2043. they

  2044. were

  2045. complained

  2046. that

  2047. they

  2048. didn't

  2049. get

  2050. any

  2051. food

  2052. so

  2053. God

  2054. supplied

  2055. them

  2056. with

  2057. this

  2058. stuff

  2059. that

  2060. came

  2061. down

  2062. every

  2063. morning

  2064. and

  2065. it

  2066. was

  2067. called

  2068. manna

  2069. and

  2070. they

  2071. were

  2072. told

  2073. this

  2074. is

  2075. your

  2076. provision

  2077. and

  2078. of

  2079. course

  2080. like

  2081. the

  2082. human

  2083. beings

  2084. right

  2085. so

  2086. they

  2087. got

  2088. sick

  2089. of

  2090. this

  2091. manna

  2092. I

  2093. don't

  2094. think

  2095. it

  2096. was

  2097. particularly

  2098. nice

  2099. to

  2100. eat

  2101. it

  2102. was

  2103. probably

  2104. good

  2105. protein

  2106. but

  2107. that's

  2108. all

  2109. you

  2110. could

  2111. say

  2112. about

  2113. it

  2114. and

  2115. the

  2116. idea

  2117. was

  2118. that

  2119. when

  2120. the

  2121. temple

  2122. was

  2123. built

  2124. a little

  2125. bit

  2126. of

  2127. that

  2128. manna

  2129. was

  2130. put

  2131. into

  2132. a

  2133. pot

  2134. and

  2135. taken

  2136. into

  2137. the

  2138. temple

  2139. into

  2140. the

  2141. holiest

  2142. of

  2143. holies

  2144. where

  2145. it

  2146. was

  2147. kept

  2148. in

  2149. the

  2150. tabernacle

  2151. and

  2152. alongside

  2153. the

  2154. legend

  2155. there

  2156. arose

  2157. this

  2158. idea

  2159. that

  2160. on

  2161. a

  2162. day

  2163. appointed

  2164. by

  2165. God

  2166. that

  2167. pot

  2168. could

  2169. be

  2170. opened

  2171. and

  2172. the

  2173. manna

  2174. could

  2175. be

  2176. eaten

  2177. I

  2178. mean

  2179. I

  2180. think

  2181. you

  2182. would

  2183. be

  2184. rushed

  2185. straight

  2186. off

  2187. to

  2188. the

  2189. emergency

  2190. room

  2191. according to

  2192. numbers

  2193. the thing

  2194. went off

  2195. over a

  2196. 24 hour

  2197. period

  2198. they were

  2199. told

  2200. not to

  2201. store

  2202. it

  2203. because

  2204. it

  2205. did

  2206. go

  2207. off

  2208. and

  2209. it

  2210. used

  2211. a

  2212. very

  2213. robust

  2214. language

  2215. if you

  2216. leave

  2217. it

  2218. over

  2219. 24

  2220. hours

  2221. it

  2222. will

  2223. stink

  2224. it

  2225. is

  2226. a

  2227. bit

  2228. like

  2229. fish

  2230. or

  2231. something

  2232. I

  2233. don't

  2234. know

  2235. but

  2236. you know

  2237. not

  2238. pleasant

  2239. so

  2240. the

  2241. idea

  2242. was

  2243. that

  2244. the

  2245. promise

  2246. here

  2247. relates

  2248. to

  2249. the

  2250. time

  2251. that

  2252. some

  2253. of that

  2254. hidden

  2255. manna

  2256. would be

  2257. given

  2258. to the

  2259. people

  2260. of God

  2261. and

  2262. when

  2263. they were

  2264. given

  2265. that

  2266. manna

  2267. it

  2268. would

  2269. reinforce

  2270. the

  2271. idea

  2272. that

  2273. they

  2274. were

  2275. being

  2276. rewarded

  2277. for

  2278. overcoming

  2279. what

  2280. had

  2281. gone

  2282. before

  2283. in

  2284. the

  2285. church

  2286. and

  2287. prevailing

  2288. and

  2289. then

  2290. there's

  2291. this

  2292. other

  2293. promise

  2294. the

  2295. white

  2296. stone

  2297. and

  2298. my

  2299. friend

  2300. John

  2301. Angle

  2302. walked

  2303. into

  2304. church

  2305. tonight

  2306. and

  2307. said

  2308. to

  2309. me

  2310. I've

  2311. got

  2312. a

  2313. white

  2314. stone

  2315. with

  2316. me

  2317. and

  2318. proceeded

  2319. to

  2320. tell

  2321. me

  2322. the

  2323. story

  2324. that

  2325. lay

  2326. behind

  2327. that

  2328. white

  2329. stone

  2330. and

  2331. so

  2332. I

  2333. just

  2334. said

  2335. to

  2336. John

  2337. would

  2338. you

  2339. stand

  2340. up

  2341. and

  2342. just

  2343. say

  2344. you

  2345. might

  2346. have

  2347. to

  2348. speak

  2349. loud

  2350. I

  2351. knew

  2352. that

  2353. it

  2354. was

  2355. talking

  2356. about

  2357. a

  2358. white

  2359. stone

  2360. in

  2361. Pergamum

  2362. tonight

  2363. and I

  2364. just

  2365. picked

  2366. this

  2367. up

  2368. off

  2369. the

  2370. shelf

  2371. which

  2372. I

  2373. keep

  2374. in

  2375. my

  2376. study

  2377. in

  2378. the

  2379. 1990s

  2380. I

  2381. was

  2382. worshipping

  2383. at

  2384. St.

  2385. Andrews

  2386. as

  2387. some

  2388. people

  2389. know

  2390. and

  2391. I

  2392. felt

  2393. called

  2394. to

  2395. ministry

  2396. and

  2397. Bishop

  2398. Jim

  2399. as

  2400. was

  2401. then

  2402. he

  2403. decided

  2404. that

  2405. yes

  2406. he

  2407. would

  2408. send

  2409. me

  2410. to

  2411. a

  2412. conference

  2413. where

  2414. I

  2415. would

  2416. be

  2417. assessed

  2418. as to

  2419. whether

  2420. I

  2421. was

  2422. suitable

  2423. to

  2424. go

  2425. forward

  2426. for

  2427. ministry

  2428. I

  2429. was

  2430. walking

  2431. around

  2432. the

  2433. garden

  2434. in

  2435. this

  2436. residential

  2437. place

  2438. prior

  2439. to

  2440. the

  2441. conference

  2442. taking

  2443. place

  2444. and

  2445. I

  2446. bent

  2447. down

  2448. and I

  2449. picked

  2450. up

  2451. a stone

  2452. this

  2453. white

  2454. stone

  2455. I

  2456. put it

  2457. in my

  2458. pocket

  2459. and I

  2460. went back

  2461. to my

  2462. room

  2463. and

  2464. then I

  2465. suddenly

  2466. realised

  2467. this

  2468. passage

  2469. in

  2470. Revelation

  2471. and I

  2472. read the

  2473. passage

  2474. in

  2475. Revelation

  2476. which

  2477. said

  2478. I

  2479. will

  2480. give

  2481. him

  2482. a

  2483. white

  2484. stone

  2485. with

  2486. a

  2487. new

  2488. name

  2489. written

  2490. on it

  2491. and I

  2492. grabbed

  2493. the stone

  2494. and I

  2495. said

  2496. yes

  2497. Lord

  2498. that's

  2499. your

  2500. promise

  2501. to me

  2502. I

  2503. am

  2504. going

  2505. forward

  2506. to

  2507. something

  2508. new

  2509. and God

  2510. you're

  2511. going to

  2512. be with

  2513. me

  2514. and you've

  2515. given me

  2516. that stone

  2517. as a

  2518. promise

  2519. so I

  2520. feel

  2521. that the

  2522. white

  2523. stone

  2524. it

  2525. means

  2526. a

  2527. promise

  2528. of

  2529. something

  2530. new

  2531. to come

  2532. and that

  2533. was what

  2534. this meant

  2535. to me

  2536. my

  2537. white

  2538. stone

  2539. thanks

  2540. John

  2541. so

  2542. amongst

  2543. the

  2544. books

  2545. I've

  2546. read

  2547. on the

  2548. book

  2549. of

  2550. Revelation

  2551. there

  2552. are

  2553. four

  2554. things

  2555. where

  2556. people

  2557. seek

  2558. to

  2559. and I

  2560. want to

  2561. say

  2562. that

  2563. it

  2564. seems

  2565. to me

  2566. John

  2567. that

  2568. your

  2569. explanation

  2570. of the

  2571. stone

  2572. is not

  2573. far

  2574. from

  2575. some

  2576. of

  2577. these

  2578. things

  2579. actually

  2580. in the

  2581. ancient

  2582. world

  2583. if you're

  2584. given a

  2585. white

  2586. stone

  2587. sorry

  2588. if you

  2589. were acquitted

  2590. at a

  2591. trial

  2592. you would

  2593. be given

  2594. a white

  2595. stone

  2596. so

  2597. Protestant

  2598. theologians

  2599. made a lot

  2600. about this

  2601. and made

  2602. it an

  2603. analogy

  2604. of the

  2605. doctrine

  2606. of

  2607. justification

  2608. which Paul

  2609. talks about

  2610. in Romans

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  2611. chapter 5

  2612. justification

  2613. means we're

  2614. counted

  2615. righteous

  2616. on the

  2617. back of

  2618. the

  2619. righteousness

  2620. of

  2621. Jesus

  2622. it is

  2623. appropriated

  2624. to us

  2625. the

  2626. second

  2627. reason

  2628. second

  2629. use

  2630. of a

  2631. white

  2632. stone

  2633. was

  2634. if you

  2635. won a

  2636. battle

  2637. you'd

  2638. be

  2639. given

  2640. a

  2641. white

  2642. stone

  2643. a bit

  2644. like a

  2645. medal

  2646. in the

  2647. modern

  2648. army

  2649. you were

  2650. given

  2651. a

  2652. white

  2653. stone

  2654. and the

  2655. third

  2656. reason

  2657. you would

  2658. be

  2659. given

  2660. a

  2661. white

  2662. stone

  2663. in the

  2664. ancient

  2665. world

  2666. was

  2667. when you

  2668. were

  2669. given

  2670. freedom

  2671. of the

  2672. city

  2673. and the

  2674. final

  2675. one

  2676. which I

  2677. think

  2678. has

  2679. more

  2680. in it

  2681. than the

  2682. other

  2683. three

  2684. explanations

  2685. is

  2686. what's

  2687. known as

  2688. the

  2689. tessara

  2690. hospitalis

  2691. that

  2692. means

  2693. the

  2694. token

  2695. hospitality

  2696. what

  2697. happened

  2698. was

  2699. that

  2700. two

  2701. friends

  2702. would be

  2703. given

  2704. white

  2705. stones

  2706. and they

  2707. would write

  2708. the name

  2709. of the

  2710. other

  2711. person

  2712. on their

  2713. stone

  2714. and then

  2715. time

  2716. might

  2717. separate

  2718. them

  2719. and go

  2720. their

  2721. different

  2722. ways

  2723. if they

  2724. died

  2725. they would

  2726. hand

  2727. their stone

  2728. on to

  2729. their

  2730. son

  2731. or their

  2732. daughter

  2733. probably

  2734. their

  2735. son

  2736. and when

  2737. they met

  2738. up with

  2739. the person

  2740. had the

  2741. other

  2742. stone

  2743. this meant

  2744. there was

  2745. a responsibility

  2746. on you

  2747. to show

  2748. hospitality

  2749. that didn't

  2750. mean you

  2751. had to go

  2752. and cook

  2753. them a

  2754. meal

  2755. I mean

  2756. it might

  2757. mean that

  2758. what it

  2759. meant was

  2760. that you

  2761. would be

  2762. hospitable

  2763. to them

  2764. and

  2765. I think

  2766. it's not

  2767. too fanciful

  2768. to see

  2769. this

  2770. explanation

  2771. as a

  2772. kind of

  2773. foretaste

  2774. of the

  2775. heavenly

  2776. banquet

  2777. that

  2778. our

  2779. names

  2780. if we

  2781. trust

  2782. Christ

  2783. and we

  2784. stick

  2785. with him

  2786. whatever

  2787. the

  2788. opposition

  2789. then we

  2790. will have

  2791. our

  2792. invite

  2793. to the

  2794. heavenly

  2795. banquet

  2796. we

  2797. should

  2798. be

  2799. there

  2800. and

  2801. God

  2802. will

  2803. have

  2804. our

  2805. name

  2806. written

  2807. on the

  2808. stone

  2809. that he

  2810. hands

  2811. to us

  2812. so

  2813. very

  2814. quickly

  2815. what have

  2816. we learned

  2817. thus far

  2818. from

  2819. Ephesians

  2820. we learned

  2821. that

  2822. doctrinal

  2823. purity

  2824. without

  2825. love

  2826. is not

  2827. what the

  2828. risen

  2829. Christ

  2830. calls us

  2831. to

  2832. you can

  2833. be as

  2834. sound

  2835. as you

  2836. like

  2837. as a

  2838. Christian

  2839. but if

  2840. you don't

  2841. have any

  2842. love in

  2843. your heart

  2844. agape

  2845. in your

  2846. heart

  2847. it means

  2848. nothing

  2849. secondly

  2850. love

  2851. without

  2852. any

  2853. doctrinal

  2854. understanding

  2855. just leaves

  2856. the church

  2857. undefended

  2858. wide open

  2859. to the

  2860. modern day

  2861. Balaam's

  2862. and

  2863. Nicolatians

  2864. thirdly

  2865. to those

  2866. who prevail

  2867. says Jesus

  2868. I will

  2869. give

  2870. eternal

  2871. life

  2872. chapter 2

  2873. and verse

  2874. 7

  2875. so keep

  2876. your eyes

  2877. on the

  2878. prize

  2879. chapter 2

  2880. verse 11

  2881. and then I

  2882. think what we

  2883. add tonight

  2884. is that we

  2885. need to

  2886. monitor the

  2887. balance in

  2888. the way we

  2889. go about

  2890. our evangelism

  2891. about how

  2892. we connect

  2893. with this

  2894. world

  2895. that balance

  2896. between

  2897. collusion

  2898. and compromise

  2899. and that

  2900. takes wisdom

  2901. from on

  2902. high

  2903. as I

  2904. said earlier

  2905. I think

  2906. there's only

  2907. one route

  2908. for us to

  2909. have wisdom

  2910. on high

  2911. it's not

  2912. via a

  2913. university

  2914. not via a

  2915. public school

  2916. not via any

  2917. school

  2918. it's via

  2919. our relationship

  2920. with God

  2921. and our

  2922. willingness to

  2923. seek his

  2924. wisdom

  2925. on any

  2926. and every

  2927. subject

  2928. amen

  2929. amen

  2930. Thank you.
