  1. So anyway, Advent, hope.

  2. We now move on to the second one, and that is actually about peace.

  3. ! There's a famous passage in Scripture that we always use this time of year.

  4. Isaiah chapter 9, verse 2 is when they said there's a people who are walking in deep darkness.

    Isaiah 9:2

  5. We've heard that before, right?

  6. Isaiah 9, 2.

  7. And then the prophecy for Christmas comes in verse 5 to 7.

  8. If you've got your phones or what I prefer even more is a paper Bible,

  9. I'd love for you to open up now and follow me as I go through.

  10. Because I think it is really interesting as we go through this passage,

  11. I'm going to unpack a word that we always hear.

  12. We always hear the word peace, but what does it actually mean?

  13. And as I look at Isaiah chapter 9, where there's a prophecy of this child that is going to be coming.

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  14. For to us, a child is born, a son is given.

  15. And then it's really Isaiah chapter 9, verse 2.

    Isaiah 9:2

  16. If there's a Christmas passage, this is probably it.

  17. So the context of it is,

  18. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.

  19. Those who dwell in a land of deep darkness, on them light has shone.

  20. And then verse 6 is where we're going to kind of jump into a little bit.

  21. For to us, a child is born, to us, a son is given.

  22. And the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.

  23. And then it carries on,

  24. Of the increase of his government and of peace, there will be no end.

  25. There will be no end to peace.

  26. And then the passage that Wes came and read for us in Luke chapter 2 is when the shepherds were watching their flock by night.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  27. And then they're told about the coming of this baby lying in a manger.

  28. And this baby is then going to bring peace.

  29. Because suddenly the angels appear in the sky and they're singing.

  30. They're singing glory to God in the highest.

  31. And there will be peace on earth.

  32. The question I want to unpack for us today is what's a baby got to do with peace?

  33. Why does the coming of a baby bring about peace?

  34. If, in fact, I personally don't use the word peace to describe babies.

  35. Have we met EJ?

  36. EJ, bless her, we love her.

  37. Where is she?

  38. She's in there now, of course.

  39. That's why it's a little bit more peaceful.

  40. It is not, peace is not the word.

  41. In fact, I've, and of course, Christina and I, we're expecting our baby that's coming in March.

  42. And you know what?

  43. If you've been a parent, put your hand up if you've been a parent.

  44. Put your hand up if you've looked after a teeny little baby.

  45. Kara, peace is not the word.

  46. Right?

  47. What I don't understand is when people say, oh, how did you sleep last night, Felix?

  48. And then Felix goes, oh, I slept like a baby.

  49. What?

  50. So you woke up every two hours and then you woke yourself up because you pooped your pants?

  51. Yes.

  52. Baby and peace.

  53. It doesn't really connect.

  54. It doesn't really link.

  55. So therefore, what is it about the baby that brings us peace on earth?

  56. Peace that will know no end.

  57. Because the truth is we don't really live in a world that has peace right now.

  58. You look at Israel and Gaza.

  59. You look at what's happening in Ukraine.

  60. You look anywhere.

  61. Anywhere.

  62. You look within your own families.

  63. There probably isn't peace.

  64. But maybe there's something else we have to do first.

  65. And this is where we're going to need a little bit of interaction.

  66. I did promise Nathan that I was going to pick on him and ask him some questions.

  67. So this is me being really kind and giving you some warning.

  68. What does peace mean to you?

  69. Have a think now.

  70. When Jesus, or when we say peace be with you, what does it actually mean?

  71. What does peace mean to you?

  72. Turn to the person next to you.

  73. If you don't know them, this is a great chance to introduce and say, hi, my name is D.

  74. And peace to me means D.

  75. Okay.

  76. One minute.

  77. What does peace mean to you?

  78. Go.

  79. Go.

  80. Go.

  81. Thank you.

  82. Thank you.

  83. I picked on you two enough.

  84. All right, all right.

  85. Here we go, here we go.

  86. What's peace then?

  87. What's peace to you?

  88. Let's start with Nathan.

  89. Nathan, what's peace to you?

  90. Peace is knowing that God is in control even though you're walking through different things in life.

  91. Peace is knowing that God is in control even though you're walking through different things in life.

  92. Like it.

  93. I really like that.

  94. Peace.

  95. What else is it about peace?

  96. Connie?

  97. I knew it.

  98. Oh, wow.

  99. You preempted and already paved the way.

  100. Man.

  101. What is it?

  102. I'll just.

  103. Being insecure in Christ and.

  104. Oh, finding stillness in body, mind, heart, spirit.

  105. Do I need to use.

  106. Oh, these are longer.

  107. Oh, thank you.

  108. Thank you, Rocky.

  109. Seriously, that earring is so cool.

  110. Peace.

  111. What else is peace?

  112. Shum, what's peace to you?

  113. Being present and undistracted.

  114. Being present and undistracted.

  115. That is good.

  116. That is really good.

  117. One last one.

  118. One last one.

  119. I'm going to go for you, Lawrence.

  120. At the back.

  121. What's peace to you, Lawrence?

  122. Wow, Rebecca.

  123. You guys are getting good at this.

  124. You're like passing it on.

  125. Okay.

  126. Rebecca.

  127. A choice to live in harmony with people around you, even though you may be disagreeing.

  128. Oh, wow.

  129. That's a big one.

  130. That's huge.

  131. And that is completely correct.

  132. Well done, Lawrence.

  133. You married up.

  134. Well done.

  135. Okay.

  136. You know, when I Googled peace, it was, people would say it's the absence of conflict.

  137. Right?

  138. I've actually got a colleague of Young Life, from Young Life, who's actually in Palestine

  139. right now.

  140. And we're asking him, how can we help you?

  141. What do you need?

  142. And he's just saying, we're just praying for peace.

  143. We're just praying for peace.

  144. Where there is harmony.

  145. Where, in some ways, there is absence of conflict.

  146. But the truth is, that's just one aspect of peace.

  147. A worldly kind of peace, which is, oh, as long as you're not fighting, there is peace.

  148. Going back to being parents of young children.

  149. Mothers just wanting a moment of peace.

  150. Can I just have a moment where you're not fighting?

  151. Where you're not arguing?

  152. Where you don't need me for something?

  153. I just need to sit and relax for one moment.

  154. I need a moment of peace.

  155. But peace, of course, isn't just the absence of conflict.

  156. It's not just the absence of fighting.

  157. Aidan's lying down in a way that looks very peaceful right now.

  158. Because it's a state of mind.

  159. It's not just the absence of conflict.

  160. There's a presence of something else that allows you to remain still in the heart, soul, and mind.

  161. Even when you're still walking through all these different circumstances.

  162. With people who are disagreeing with you on very different things.

  163. Put your hand up if you would say that in this current moment in your life right now, you have peace.

  164. That's good.

  165. Because the hard thing is, how do we get this kind of peace?

  166. Jesus talks about peace as well.

  167. In John chapter 14, he says,

    John 14 chapter mention

  168. Peace I give to you.

  169. Peace, my peace I leave with you.

  170. This peace that the world cannot give.

  171. So do not let your hearts be troubled.

  172. Do not be afraid.

  173. And it's not even about circumstance.

  174. Because John 14, what's happening in John 14?

  175. John 13 is the Last Supper.

  176. Judas then heads off to start in motion,

  177. essentially the betrayal of Jesus that leads to the death of Jesus.

  178. And so John 13 is that.

  179. And John 14, Judas is gone.

  180. Judas is gone to start the thing.

  181. And then Jesus tells the disciples,

  182. Peace I leave with you.

  183. This guy's about to die.

  184. This guy's about to be nailed to a cross.

  185. And yet he says,

  186. My peace I leave with you.

  187. My peace I give you.

  188. It has nothing to do with circumstance.

  189. Ironically, in that season,

  190. it was a season called Pax Romana.

  191. Pax Romana, as historians would describe,

  192. is the peace of Rome.

  193. What that meant is,

  194. actually in that short span of time,

  195. maybe a hundred years or so,

  196. there was peace.

  197. The Roman Empire had taken over so much

  198. that there was peace.

  199. But it wasn't a real peace.

  200. It was a coerced, forced kind of peace.

  201. It was like,

  202. Abide by our rules,

  203. and you won't have any trouble.

  204. It was that kind of peace.

  205. And yet the Jews,

  206. they knew that there wasn't true peace.

  207. The Jews knew that they were still being oppressed.

  208. The Jews knew that they still weren't in the place

  209. that they should have been.

  210. And yet Jesus here is saying,

  211. My peace I leave with you.

  212. My peace I give you.

  213. The world cannot give it.

  214. Do not let your hearts be troubled.

  215. Or afraid.

  216. What does a baby have to do with peace?

  217. And the answer is,

  218. not really much at all.

  219. It's what that baby ends up becoming

  220. that gives us peace.

  221. Because the baby in a manger,

  222. lying swaddled for that moment,

  223. so they could take a photo

  224. for the nativity postcard

  225. that we'll use in 2,000 years' time,

  226. that moment of peace will be gone.

  227. As soon as the cows make an extra loud noise,

  228. wake the baby up,

  229. and then there will be no peace.

  230. But it's what that baby then becomes.

  231. It's who that baby is,

  232. and what that baby ends up doing,

  233. and it's the life that baby ends up living,

  234. and the death of that baby ends up dying,

  235. that gives us the peace.

  236. And I want to unpack that a little bit for us today.

  237. Because when you have peace,

  238. when this baby comes,

  239. this arrival of a baby,

  240. does a couple things.

  241. The first thing it does is this.

  242. It gives us the peace of God.

  243. I'm going to put us all on the spot again.

  244. When you think about the word peace in the Bible,

  245. do any Bible verses come to mind?

  246. Anyone?

  247. Does anyone remember a Bible verse

  248. that has something to do with peace?

  249. Alex?

  250. Peace that transcends all understanding.

  251. Well done.

  252. Round of applause, Alex.

  253. Solid.

  254. Solid.

  255. Rejoice in the Lord.

  256. Again, I will say rejoice.

  257. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone.

  258. The Lord is at hand.

  259. Do not be anxious about anything,

  260. but in everything,

  261. by prayer and supplication,

  262. with thanksgiving,

  263. let your requests be made known to God,

  264. and the peace of God,

  265. which surpasses understanding,

  266. will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

  267. The peace of God will guard your hearts and minds.

  268. You don't have to be anxious at all.

  269. I love that passage.

  270. It's everywhere.

  271. Philippians chapter four, verse four to seven.

  272. But the key to that isn't actually,

  273. do not be anxious about anything, for me.

  274. The key to that passage isn't even,

  275. put in everything with prayer and supplication,

  276. with thanksgiving.

  277. It isn't that bit.

  278. The key there is the Lord is at hand.

  279. The Lord is near.

  280. So don't be anxious about anything.

  281. What does the arrival of baby Jesus do for us when peace?

  282. It tells us that God wants to be with us.

  283. That God would choose to leave heaven

  284. and come and be with us.

  285. Emmanuel, God with us.

  286. Don't you have that person

  287. that if you were to walk into something

  288. that was scary for you,

  289. if you have that person with you,

  290. suddenly it will just be calm.

  291. We had this in the first few weeks

  292. when my children went to a new school

  293. and it was like,

  294. daddy, can you walk with me

  295. all the way to the door?

  296. As far as you possibly can

  297. before you get taken away by security.

  298. And if I could, as a parent,

  299. I would love to even sit

  300. in the dining hall with my kids,

  301. sit in the classroom with my kids.

  302. Or when Ruben's going to try and play basketball

  303. in the playground,

  304. I would love to be there with him.

  305. Don't you have that person that,

  306. oh, if that person was here,

  307. it would just calm me right down.

  308. Right?

  309. Do we have those kinds of people?

  310. There's a scene in Avengers Endgame

  311. where there's the big battle.

  312. Thanos is coming with his whole just army.

  313. And then it's like,

  314. oh man, this doesn't look good.

  315. But of course it's Marvel,

  316. so it will end up good.

  317. Apart from more recent Marvel entries.

  318. And so we're like,

  319. oh my goodness,

  320. something's going to happen.

  321. Something's going to happen.

  322. But then Captain Marvel comes.

  323. Captain Marvel,

  324. one of the most powerful superheroes.

  325. And the moment she comes in,

  326. he's kind of like,

  327. oh, Captain Marvel's here.

  328. We're going to be just fine.

  329. The arrival of baby Jesus

  330. tells us that God wants

  331. to actually be with us.

  332. I don't know what you're nervous about.

  333. I don't know whether it's going into work

  334. because work is just going to be brutal this week

  335. as we head up to Christmas.

  336. I don't know if it's because of the gossip

  337. that you have with the colleagues

  338. that you have around you

  339. and you're just like,

  340. oh, this is going to be hard.

  341. Or maybe it's the Christmas family meal

  342. that you have to go to

  343. where you have to field those same questions

  344. from the uncles and aunties

  345. that you get all the time,

  346. which gets you all anxious and worked up.

  347. What if I told you

  348. the arrival of baby Jesus

  349. reminds us that God wants to be with you.

  350. And because he is near,

  351. because he is at hand,

  352. you have the peace of God

  353. that transcends understanding.

  354. What does that mean?

  355. It means it doesn't make sense.

  356. It means you don't really understand

  357. why you have this peace,

  358. but you do.

  359. This happened for us

  360. during the fifth wave

  361. when everyone was leaving Hong Kong

  362. and it was just a mess

  363. and people were just like,

  364. what is happening?

  365. We're going to be shut down.

  366. There's going to be three tests

  367. that we all have to do

  368. and all the people that we knew

  369. were heading out.

  370. And I was like, you know what?

  371. God, what do you want us to do here

  372. in this season?

  373. And he's like,

  374. just have a peace

  375. that surpasses understanding.

  376. Any meeting that you have,

  377. any lunch that you have,

  378. any coffee that you have,

  379. any time that you have with people,

  380. let them see the peace of God in you,

  381. which is what?

  382. Man, things aren't going well.

  383. Things are pretty busy and hectic.

  384. Yet James seems to have this peace

  385. that doesn't make sense.

  386. This peace of God

  387. that surpasses understanding.

  388. The arrival of baby Jesus

  389. gives us that peace.

  390. I like to think that Joseph,

  391. his dad,

  392. had the same peace.

  393. Can you just put yourself

  394. in Joseph's shoes for a second?

  395. I think he couldn't have survived

  396. what he was about to go through

  397. were it not for the fact

  398. that he had the peace of God with him.

  399. So he's engaged to Mary.

  400. And then Mary comes to him one day

  401. and says,

  402. Hey Joseph,

  403. I know we're about to get married,

  404. but I need to tell you something.

  405. And then she tells,

  406. well,

  407. so actually I'm pregnant.

  408. And then Joseph is like,

  409. how did that happen?

  410. There was no biology,

  411. sex education at that time,

  412. but it was like,

  413. you're pregnant?

  414. How did that happen?

  415. Oh my goodness.

  416. Can you imagine what that would mean

  417. for people in that society?

  418. That the girl that you're actually

  419. about to be getting married to

  420. is now pregnant.

  421. And then the girl says,

  422. Oh, don't worry.

  423. Don't worry.

  424. Nothing bad has happened.

  425. The baby comes from the Holy Spirit.

  426. And then Joseph must be like,

  427. Huh.

  428. Huh.

  429. It would almost have been easier

  430. if it was something else.

  431. But now I'm going to have to explain

  432. to all our village

  433. that my fiance is pregnant

  434. because of an invisible force

  435. got her pregnant.

  436. This is going to be fun.

  437. The peace of God,

  438. the Tristan's understanding

  439. that allows us to have this peace

  440. even when things don't make sense,

  441. even when circumstances

  442. don't make sense.

  443. The arrival of baby Jesus

  444. reminds us that God

  445. wants to be with us.

  446. And if he's with us,

  447. then it's all going to be okay.

  448. It's even,

  449. he's even more powerful

  450. than Captain Marvel.

  451. Of course,

  452. there's an even more beautiful

  453. biblical gospel truth

  454. in that scene at the end

  455. because it's not the power

  456. that wins the battle.

  457. It's the sacrifice.

  458. It's the sacrifice of

  459. Robert Downey Jr.

  460. May he rest in peace.

  461. Though I hear he's actually coming back.

  462. Anyway,

  463. that's a different thing.

  464. The peace of God

  465. that surpasses understanding.

  466. The question I have for you here

  467. in this first point is this.

  468. Do you display that peace?

  469. Do you display that peace

  470. that surpasses understanding

  471. to the people that you have

  472. in your life,

  473. to your sphere of influence?

  474. When people talk to you,

  475. when people spend time with you,

  476. do they like,

  477. man,

  478. there is a peace about JP

  479. that I just can't simply understand.

  480. He just makes me feel like

  481. everything's going to be okay.

  482. We're supposed to be

  483. the type of people

  484. when other people spend time with us,

  485. they will feel as though,

  486. ah,

  487. you know what?

  488. Everything's going to be okay.

  489. Because the arrival of baby Jesus

  490. gives us that peace

  491. from within.

  492. Because it's saying,

  493. God wants to be with us.

  494. The second is this.

  495. The arrival of baby Jesus

  496. tells us something about peace

  497. that's really necessary.

  498. And it's what Rebecca

  499. talked about here is

  500. when we truly understand

  501. what the arrival of baby Jesus means,

  502. it means that we have peace

  503. with other people as well.

  504. That there is a peace with others.

  505. There's another passage

  506. in the scripture

  507. that talks a lot about peace.

  508. That says,

  509. Jesus,

  510. he himself is our peace

  511. and it's Ephesians 2.

  512. Can you turn with me

  513. to Ephesians 2?

  514. I want to show you

  515. a few things there.

  516. Ephesians 2,

  517. let me tell you

  518. a little bit of the context.

  519. I just said that

  520. we live in a world

  521. where everyone's

  522. fighting each other.

  523. Everyone's just

  524. arguing

  525. with each other.

  526. The context here

  527. for Ephesians 2

  528. is that the church

  529. was started

  530. was that there were

  531. two groups of people

  532. within the same church

  533. were arguing.

  534. Have you ever heard of that?

  535. How ridiculous

  536. and ludicrous

  537. does that sound?

  538. That people within a church

  539. would argue with each other

  540. and yet here we are.

  541. They're arguing.

  542. The Jews against the Gentiles.

  543. They're looking at each other

  544. going,

  545. oh, you guys shouldn't be here.

  546. You guys,

  547. oh, you don't do faith

  548. in the right way.

  549. Dr. Alex and I

  550. were having a lunch

  551. a couple days ago

  552. with a good friend of Alex's

  553. and he was asking me,

  554. hey, if Christianity is true,

  555. why are there so many denominations?

  556. Why are there so many people

  557. arguing about

  558. so many different things?

  559. Why does it seem like

  560. you don't,

  561. you guys don't even

  562. seem to have the answer?

  563. You're just fighting.

  564. You see,

  565. if we truly understood

  566. the arrival of baby Jesus

  567. and the message

  568. that that comes with,

  569. we would have peace

  570. with others.

  571. And Paul's actually

  572. writing about that

  573. that I want to unpack,

  574. but I want to tell you

  575. first of all

  576. that it has something

  577. to do with humility.

  578. In order to have peace

  579. with others,

  580. that baby Jesus

  581. that comes

  582. lying in a manger,

  583. swaddled up,

  584. what's that trying to show us?

  585. Is trying to show us

  586. that this battle is won

  587. not through force,

  588. but through humility.

  589. That Isaiah 9 one,

  590. he's a wonderful counselor.

  591. He's mighty God,

  592. which actually in another version

  593. is basically mighty warrior.

  594. Psalm 46 says,

  595. the nations rage,

  596. the kingdoms totter.

  597. He utters his voice

  598. and the earth melts.

  599. That's how strong

  600. and powerful this God is.

  601. And that's why he says,

  602. be still and know

  603. that I am God.

  604. If I open my voice,

  605. you are going to melt.

  606. So stop fighting

  607. is what he's saying.

  608. He could come

  609. and force peace onto us,

  610. yet he comes in the form

  611. of a baby

  612. in humility.

  613. The arrival of baby Jesus

  614. gives us peace with others

  615. because we're reminded

  616. that in order to get peace,

  617. it starts with humility.

  618. It starts with knowing

  619. what he's done for us.

  620. It's not just the absence

  621. of conflict.

  622. It is actually

  623. the presence of humility.

  624. Ephesians 2.

  625. Ephesians 2 verse 13

    Ephesians 2:13

  626. says this,

  627. but now in Christ Jesus,

  628. you who once were far off

  629. have been brought near

  630. by the blood of Christ.

  631. For he himself

  632. is our peace

  633. who has made us both one

  634. and has broken down

  635. in his flesh

  636. the dividing wall

  637. of hostility.

  638. He's saying,

  639. Paul's saying,

  640. hey look,

  641. there's two groups here.

  642. You've got the Jews

  643. over this side,

  644. you've got the Gentiles

  645. over this side,

  646. you've got the people

  647. who used to be KFCI

  648. this side,

  649. and you've got the people

  650. who used to be

  651. the gathering this side.

  652. You have two sides

  653. and it does not make sense.

  654. Jesus came

  655. and preached peace

  656. to those who were far off

  657. and to those who were near

  658. and they break down

  659. that dividing wall

  660. of hostility.

  661. By the way,

  662. those two sides

  663. we should never need

  664. to label again.

  665. We are one church.

  666. In fact,

  667. there's plenty of people

  668. here who were neither.

  669. Paul's saying,

  670. we are one.

  671. Why?

  672. Because Christ himself

  673. is our peace

  674. and he came

  675. and broke down

  676. that dividing wall

  677. of hostility.

  678. The arrival of baby Jesus

  679. breaks down any walls

  680. because through humility

  681. those walls

  682. are broken down.

  683. The question

  684. that we have then is,

  685. are we proponents

  686. of that peace?

  687. do we truly recognize

  688. that?

  689. If it carries on

  690. in Ephesians 2,

  691. it says this,

  692. verse 16,

  693. verse 15,

  694. by abolishing the law

  695. of commandments

  696. expressed in ordinances

  697. that he might create

  698. in himself one new man

  699. in place of the two,

  700. so making peace

  701. and might reconcile

  702. us both to God

  703. in one body

  704. through the cross,

  705. thereby killing

  706. the hostility.

  707. And he came

  708. and preached peace

  709. to you who were far off

  710. and peace to those

  711. who were near

  712. for through him

  713. we both have access

  714. in one spirit

  715. to the father.

  716. There is no special access

  717. because you're a Jew.

  718. There is no special access

  719. because now you're a Gentile.

  720. We all go to the father

  721. the same way.

  722. It's through Jesus.

  723. You are one.

  724. You are one.

  725. The question is,

  726. are we proponents

  727. of that peace

  728. or are we actually

  729. sitting on the sidelines

  730. with our arms crossed

  731. looking across

  732. at the other side

  733. of the fence

  734. going,

  735. those people.

  736. The arrival of baby Jesus

  737. should remind us

  738. of the humility

  739. where it's like,

  740. man,

  741. we are all one.

  742. Jesus in his sermon

  743. on the mount

  744. says,

  745. blessed are those

  746. who are the peacemakers

  747. for they shall be what?

  748. Anyone know?

  749. Known as the children

  750. of God.

  751. Ellie, yes.

  752. Blessed are the peacemakers

  753. for they shall be called

  754. the children

  755. or the sons of God.

  756. If you truly understood

  757. who you are in God

  758. as a child of God,

  759. as a son

  760. and as a daughter of God,

  761. you would be a peacemaker.

  762. You might then ask,

  763. okay,

  764. so what does that look like?

  765. I'll tell you

  766. what it looks like.

  767. All of us

  768. who are in a workplace

  769. or in some kind of field

  770. or actually

  771. any of us

  772. who are surrounded

  773. by human beings,

  774. by family,

  775. by friends,

  776. tell you what you

  777. are about to see

  778. during this Christmas

  779. as you spend time

  780. with these people.

  781. There is conflict.

  782. There's people

  783. talking bad stuff

  784. about other people.

  785. There's people

  786. who don't like other people.

  787. There's people

  788. who are annoyed

  789. at other people.

  790. You know what

  791. you're supposed to be

  792. as a child of God?

  793. You're supposed

  794. to be the peacemaker.

  795. I think those of us

  796. who are working

  797. in offices

  798. will especially

  799. know this right now.

  800. Ken's just smiling

  801. because he knows

  802. it's a battlefield

  803. out there.

  804. We're supposed

  805. to be peacemakers.

  806. What does that mean?

  807. What does that look like?

  808. It means when you're

  809. at the coffee machine

  810. and someone's

  811. talking bad

  812. about someone else

  813. and telling it to you,

  814. you're supposed

  815. to say,

  816. yeah,

  817. but maybe

  818. there's another side.

  819. We're supposed

  820. to help them

  821. understand

  822. another perspective

  823. because your goal

  824. is peace.

  825. It isn't,

  826. oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

  827. Wait till you hear

  828. what they said to me.

  829. That's not

  830. the right answer.

  831. We're supposed

  832. to be proponents

  833. of peace

  834. where we,

  835. as children of God,

  836. because of the arrival

  837. of baby Jesus,

  838. have the humility

  839. to kind of take ourselves

  840. out of the equation

  841. and bond people together.

  842. Can you have,

  843. do you have people

  844. in your life right now

  845. who are fighting

  846. who you think,

  847. maybe there is something

  848. I could do.

  849. Maybe I could help

  850. in some way.

  851. Maybe it's just

  852. to help one side

  853. dissipate their frustration

  854. so they can understand

  855. the other side

  856. a little bit more.

  857. Do you have that person

  858. in your life?

  859. Do you have those people

  860. in your life?

  861. Because the arrival

  862. of baby Jesus

  863. brings with it

  864. peace.

  865. Brings with it

  866. a peace that comes

  867. from humility.

  868. And I'll tell you one thing,

  869. it's not easy.

  870. Being that proponent

  871. of peace is not easy

  872. and it's going to be hard.

  873. But it gives me

  874. to my final point.

  875. The arrival of baby Jesus

  876. not only gives you

  877. the peace of God

  878. that surpasses understanding,

  879. it not only grants you

  880. peace with others,

  881. ultimately,

  882. ultimately that peace

  883. comes from one place.

  884. The peace with God.

  885. Ourselves.

  886. That's the key.

  887. if we understand

  888. that actually

  889. the arrival of baby Jesus

  890. tells us that God

  891. wants to be with us

  892. because at the core of it,

  893. the core problem

  894. that we have,

  895. the core problem

  896. that each of us have

  897. is that we have been

  898. separated from God.

  899. That we have been separated.

  900. Why is there so much

  901. conflict within our families?

  902. Why is there so much

  903. conflict within our churches?

  904. Why is there so much

  905. conflict in our city?

  906. It's because we have all

  907. been distanced

  908. and separated from God.

  909. The arrival of baby Jesus

  910. first and foremost

  911. is addressing that situation.

  912. That Ephesians 2 passage

  913. of the verse 12

  914. says this,

  915. remember that you were

  916. at that time

  917. separated from Christ,

  918. alienated from the

  919. commonwealth of Israel

  920. and strangers to the

  921. covenants of promise,

  922. having no hope

  923. and without God

  924. in the world.

  925. You say, hey,

  926. before you talk about

  927. unity together,

  928. let me remind you one thing.

  929. You were separated.

  930. You were lost.

  931. You were blind.

  932. You had no hope

  933. and without me.

  934. But Jesus came

  935. and preached peace

  936. to you.

  937. I was watching a TED talk

  938. with Christina

  939. the other night

  940. and it was the title,

  941. which they're always

  942. really kind of

  943. catchy titles.

  944. It was like

  945. the single parenting skill

  946. that every parent

  947. should have.

  948. And of course,

  949. as parents who are failing

  950. on a daily basis,

  951. we were attracted

  952. in to watch it.

  953. And you know what

  954. the one trait

  955. that they said,

  956. the recommendation

  957. they had for parents is?

  958. To be good at repairing.

  959. The speaker was saying,

  960. actually,

  961. that's the main thing,

  962. to be good at repairing

  963. because you're going

  964. to make mistakes.

  965. You're going to sever

  966. your relationship

  967. with your child

  968. in some way.

  969. You're going to be

  970. disconnected some way.

  971. When you end up shouting,

  972. the example she had

  973. was if you're shouting

  974. at your child

  975. across the kitchen

  976. because they're being

  977. sport and entitled

  978. and then you end up

  979. shouting

  980. and then they leave

  981. and then they slam

  982. the door behind them,

  983. all of that,

  984. be good at repairing

  985. was the answer.

  986. And how she said

  987. that you should do it

  988. is to go back

  989. to that point

  990. of disconnection.

  991. So if you were fighting

  992. with someone,

  993. let's say Danny and Grace

  994. are fighting about something

  995. and of course Danny's wrong.

  996. So Danny's got to figure out

  997. how to repair the connection.

  998. The thing to do

  999. is to go back

  1000. to that moment.

  1001. let's say Danny

  1002. then apologizes to

  1003. Hey Grace,

  1004. that moment there

  1005. in the scene

1006. where I left the toothbrush

  1007. on the left side

1008. instead of the right side,

  1009. my bad.

  1010. That's like,

1011. I know how that made you feel.

  1012. Even though I think

1013. it might be the other way around.

  1014. Danny's like,

1015. this is such a stupid example

  1016. because it's the opposite.

  1017. The whole point

  1018. of the TED Talk

  1019. was saying

1020. you've got to be good

  1021. at repairing.

1022. You've got to go back

  1023. to that scene.

  1024. Hey,

1025. do you know what I said

  1026. to you there

  1027. in the living room

  1028. the other day?

  1029. Actually,

1030. that was out of order.

  1031. And actually,

  1032. I said it

  1033. because I was frustrated.

  1034. I said it

  1035. because of this.

  1036. You go back

  1037. to that scene

  1038. and you repair it.

  1039. In some ways,

  1040. she also said,

  1041. actually,

  1042. that's essentially

  1043. why counseling

  1044. is so good,

  1045. why therapy

  1046. is so good

  1047. because you get

  1048. a space

  1049. where you sit back

  1050. into a spot

  1051. where you go back

  1052. to that,

  1053. you process

  1054. that moment

  1055. of disconnection

  1056. with someone else

  1057. in a safe space

  1058. and that's when

  1059. the repair begins.

  1060. Why does

  1061. baby Jesus,

  1062. prince of heaven,

  1063. prince of peace,

  1064. come to this world?

  1065. Because he's trying

  1066. to go back

  1067. to that moment

  1068. of disconnection

  1069. and he's trying

  1070. to repair

  1071. that disconnect

  1072. that you and I

  1073. all have

  1074. the moment

  1075. we choose

  1076. ourselves

  1077. over God.

  1078. Romans 5,

  1079. 1 says,

  1080. we get peace

  1081. with God

  1082. through Jesus.

  1083. Until you remember

  1084. and you recognize

  1085. that actually

  1086. you're distanced

  1087. from God

  1088. all the way

  1089. from your OG

  1090. ancestor,

  1091. Adam and Eve,

  1092. when they chose

1093. to go their own way,

  1094. when they chose

  1095. the flesh

  1096. over the spirit

  1097. that leads to death

  1098. as opposed

  1099. to life and peace,

  1100. until you recognize

  1101. that you were

  1102. separated from God,

  1103. then you won't

  1104. get the peace

  1105. of God

  1106. and you won't

  1107. get the peace

  1108. with others.

  1109. It starts

  1110. with that.

  1111. Jesus coming

  1112. to this world

  1113. is trying to go

  1114. back to that

  1115. point of disconnection.

  1116. The Garden of Eden

  1117. is where the point

  1118. of disconnection

  1119. comes,

  1120. where Adam

  1121. would even go,

  1122. God,

  1123. can you really

  1124. be trusted?

  1125. Did you really

  1126. say what you said?

  1127. Should we really

  1128. follow you?

  1129. Jesus,

  1130. baby Jesus,

  1131. comes back

  1132. to the earth

  1133. and goes back

  1134. to another garden,

  1135. the Garden of

  1136. Gethsemane

  1137. and he repairs

  1138. and he surrenders

  1139. his will

  1140. and he says,

  1141. God,

  1142. not my will,

  1143. but yours.

  1144. Why?

  1145. Because he had

  1146. our separation

  1147. in mind

  1148. because he was

  1149. going back

  1150. to that scene

  1151. of disconnection

  1152. to bring about

  1153. reconciliation.

  1154. That is why

1155. we have a baby Jesus.

  1156. That's why

  1157. Christianity

  1158. remains to be

  1159. the only one

  1160. that addresses

  1161. the issue

  1162. that we have

  1163. which is disconnection

  1164. because we have

  1165. a God

  1166. who comes to us

  1167. in the form

  1168. of a baby

  1169. and says,

  1170. I want connection

  1171. with you.

  1172. No other religion

  1173. does that.

  1174. All the other ones

  1175. say,

  1176. hey,

  1177. we've got to

  1178. figure out

  1179. a way

  1180. to become

  1181. perfect

  1182. so we can

  1183. get to that

  1184. place.

  1185. The truth is

  1186. we can never

  1187. get to that

  1188. place.

  1189. The truth is

  1190. the only way

  1191. we can get

  1192. to that place

  1193. is if that

  1194. place comes

  1195. to us.

  1196. That's what

  1197. the arrival

  1198. of baby Jesus

  1199. does.

  1200. Let me finish

  1201. with asking you

  1202. this.

  1203. Would you

  1204. welcome

  1205. the arrival

  1206. of baby Jesus

  1207. in your life?

  1208. Would you

  1209. welcome the

  1210. peace of God

  1211. that surpasses

  1212. understanding?

  1213. The peace

  1214. that doesn't

  1215. make sense?

  1216. Can you

  1217. commit with

  1218. me as

  1219. you leave

  1220. this place

  1221. to go back

  1222. into the

  1223. world that

  1224. you're in

  1225. and have

  1226. a peace

  1227. that doesn't

  1228. make sense?

  1229. So the

  1230. next time

  1231. someone's

  1232. complaining

  1233. in your

  1234. company about

  1235. the future

  1236. or is worried

  1237. about something,

  1238. you can display

  1239. to them a

  1240. peace of God.

  1241. Why?

  1242. Because

  1243. the arrival

  1244. of baby Jesus

  1245. tells you and

  1246. reminds you that

  1247. God wants to

  1248. be with us.

  1249. In fact,

  1250. God is with

  1251. you right

  1252. now.

  1253. He is near,

  1254. he is at

  1255. hand,

  1256. so you don't

  1257. have to be

  1258. anxious about

  1259. anything.

  1260. Can you

  1261. display that

  1262. kind of peace

  1263. of God that

  1264. surpasses

  1265. understanding?

  1266. And secondly,

  1267. when I asked

  1268. you, hey,

  1269. are there people

  1270. in your lives

  1271. that you're

  1272. not at peace

  1273. with?

  1274. This is the

  1275. season to do

  1276. it.

  1277. Because there

  1278. is a baby

  1279. that comes to

  1280. show you what

  1281. humility looks

  1282. like.

  1283. That baby,

  1284. God himself,

  1285. who if he

  1286. uttered his

  1287. voice,

  1288. everything,

  1289. everyone would

  1290. melt,

  1291. and yet he

  1292. chose to come

  1293. in the form

  1294. of a baby.

  1295. That means

  1296. there's someone

  1297. in your life

  1298. that you can

  1299. display the

  1300. same level

  1301. of humility

  1302. to.

  1303. And you're

  1304. like, oh,

  1305. but what if I

  1306. humble myself

  1307. and then they

  1308. trample all

  1309. over me?

  1310. Then they

  1311. trample all

  1312. over you.

  1313. The Lord,

  1314. the King,

  1315. the one who

  1316. ends up bringing

  1317. redemption and

  1318. reconciliation to

  1319. the whole world

  1320. was nailed to

  1321. a cross.

  1322. for you.

  1323. You can be

  1324. a doormat

  1325. because your

  1326. savior went

  1327. onto the

  1328. cross to

  1329. die for

  1330. you.

  1331. Now, if

  1332. you get to

  1333. a point where

  1334. you are

  1335. getting so

  1336. taken advantage

  1337. of that you

  1338. end up on

  1339. a cross,

  1340. then come

  1341. and talk to

  1342. me.

  1343. We'll try

  1344. and figure

  1345. out a

  1346. solution.

  1347. But until

  1348. then, I

  1349. think there's

  1350. still humility

  1351. that we can

  1352. show.

  1353. I think there's

  1354. still peace.

  1355. And if you

  1356. are a child

  1357. of God,

  1358. then you're

  1359. not supposed

  1360. to just let

  1361. people walk

  1362. all over

  1363. you.

  1364. Not to

  1365. say that's

  1366. what you're

  1367. going to go

  1368. out and

  1369. do.

  1370. Hey, everyone,

  1371. walk all

  1372. over me.

  1373. But you

  1374. have a

  1375. peace of

  1376. God that's

  1377. like, you

  1378. know what,

  1379. whatever happens.

  1380. I'm just

  1381. going to be

  1382. as faithful

  1383. as I can,

  1384. as kind

  1385. as I can,

  1386. knowing that

  1387. my savior

  1388. lives and is

  1389. standing right

  1390. next to me.

  1391. so there's

  1392. nothing that

  1393. you can do

  1394. to me that

  1395. is going

  1396. to affect

  1397. my situation.

  1398. It's not

  1399. going to

  1400. hinder my

  1401. promotion because

  1402. if God wants

  1403. my promotion,

  1404. he will

  1405. promote me.

  1406. And if God

  1407. wants me to

  1408. be popular

  1409. and be able

  1410. to succeed

  1411. in a certain

  1412. arena of my

  1413. life, he

  1414. will do it

  1415. for me.

  1416. So I don't

  1417. need to

  1418. scrounge and

  1419. I don't

  1420. need to

  1421. strive and

  1422. strain and

  1423. stress for

  1424. it because

  1425. God is

  1426. with me.

  1427. Can we

  1428. be that?

  1429. Can we

  1430. be the

  1431. peacemakers

  1432. because we

  1433. are children

  1434. of God?

  1435. And finally,

  1436. would you

  1437. humble yourself

  1438. at the

  1439. throne of

  1440. Jesus?

  1441. Would you

  1442. humble yourself

  1443. by the

  1444. baby in a

  1445. manger,

  1446. recognizing

  1447. that he

  1448. came to

  1449. save you

  1450. and me,

  1451. that we

  1452. were separated,

  1453. we were

  1454. disconnected,

  1455. we chose

  1456. our own

  1457. way, we

  1458. turned our

  1459. backs on

  1460. God, yet

  1461. now we

  1462. have peace

  1463. with him.

  1464. That word

  1465. peace, the

  1466. Old Testament

  1467. word is

  1468. shalom.

  1469. We heard of

  1470. that?

  1471. Shalom.

  1472. What does

  1473. that mean?

  1474. Shalom means

  1475. wholeness.

  1476. It's

  1477. complete.

  1478. It's not,

  1479. okay, so

  1480. when I think

  1481. about peace

  1482. sometimes, I

  1483. think about

  1484. a lake,

  1485. calmness,

  1486. no human

  1487. beings around,

  1488. not even my

  1489. children, well

  1490. definitely not

  1491. my children,

  1492. nor my wife,

  1493. just complete

  1494. utter silence,

  1495. just me,

  1496. that's peace.

  1497. But that

  1498. isn't real

  1499. peace that the

  1500. Bible talks

  1501. about.

  1502. The word

  1503. shalom means

  1504. that things

  1505. are complex,

  1506. things are

  1507. complicated, yet

  1508. there is a

  1509. wholeness to

  1510. it because

  1511. everything fits

  1512. together in

  1513. the right

  1514. place.

  1515. Who's old

  1516. enough to

  1517. remember what

  1518. you used to

  1519. do in

  1520. Microsoft

  1521. Windows where

  1522. you have

  1523. defragmentation?

  1524. Who remembers

  1525. that?

  1526. Oh, Albert,

  1527. I know you

  1528. got me.

  1529. Albert and

  1530. Paul, the

  1531. guys with

  1532. the same

  1533. hairstyle as

  1534. me, we

  1535. got this.

  1536. I used to

  1537. love doing

  1538. defrag.

  1539. I mean, I

  1540. didn't really

  1541. know what

  1542. I did, but

  1543. you just got

  1544. this picture,

  1545. this logo that

  1546. the puzzle was

  1547. like getting

  1548. fixed.

  1549. We all, yeah, I

  1550. mean, my wife

  1551. always gives me

  1552. grief about my

  1553. wardrobe because

  1554. like, I'm,

  1555. anyway, so.

  1556. And after a

  1557. while of using

  1558. wardrobe or your

  1559. bookcase or your

  1560. bookshelf, everything

  1561. just goes into,

  1562. like, it starts

  1563. getting messy,

  1564. right?

  1565. Whenever you do

  1566. anything in life,

  1567. it starts to get

  1568. messy.

  1569. I know Ellen

  1570. likes to organize

  1571. her phone apps in

  1572. the right color, and

  1573. it's all, her phone

  1574. screen is just

  1575. immaculate.

  1576. Mine starts off that

  1577. way too, but then

  1578. suddenly you start to

  1579. download apps, and

  1580. then you go to

  1581. Shenzhen and you

  1582. have to download all

  1583. these new apps, and

  1584. then suddenly my

  1585. whole screen looks

  1586. completely different,

  1587. and then I need a

  1588. defrag.

  1589. I need someone to

  1590. come in to help

  1591. tidy everything up.

  1592. That process of

  1593. defragmentation, what's

  1594. that haming for?

  1595. Shalom.

  1596. Wholeness.

  1597. Complex.

  1598. Yet complete.

  1599. I believe that's the

  1600. kingdom of God that

  1601. we're heading to.

  1602. I believe that's the

  1603. shalom that baby Jesus

  1604. is bringing.

  1605. And it starts with

  1606. us.

  1607. Would you let this

  1608. baby, and what he

  1609. does, and his life,

  1610. and his death, and

  1611. his resurrection,

  1612. defrag your life,

  1613. organize it back into

1614. a way where you have

  1615. shalom.

  1616. When you have

  1617. shalom, you will

  1618. have the peace of

  1619. God, you will have

  1620. peace with others, and

  1621. you will have peace

  1622. with God.

  1623. That is what we're

  1624. aiming for.

  1625. Peace has come,

1626. and our king is with

  1627. us.

  1628. Jesus, we thank you.

  1629. That you would leave

  1630. heaven's throne as the

1631. prince of peace, and you

1632. would come into the dark

1633. world that we live in, and

1634. that you would bring light,

  1635. that you would bring

  1636. peace.

  1637. peace.

1638. And so we pray for shalom

  1639. over every single person

  1640. in this room.

1641. We live complex lives, in a

1642. complex city, in a complex

1643. world, that so often feels

  1644. incomplete, and it truly

  1645. isn't complete.

  1646. Until you come.

  1647. would you bring

  1648. shalom.

  1649. shalom?

1650. Would you bring those who

  1651. feel distant to you

  1652. back into your arms?

1653. Would you meet us at our

  1654. point of disconnection, and

1655. repair, and reconcile us to

  1656. God the Father?

1657. Jesus, this Advent season, we

  1658. await your arrival.

  1659. Arrival filled with humility

  1660. and peace.

  1661. Thank you, Lord.

1662. And it's in your name, the

1663. name that all governments, the

1664. whole world, will rest on.

1665. Where there will be peace

  1666. that has no end.

1667. It's in your name, that name,

  1668. that we pray.

  1669. Amen.
