  1. So, we come to the church in Sardis, and I want to, if I may, just spend a little time

  2. introducing some of the themes that I hope you will see will be picked up when we actually

  3. come to the text.

  4. I want to start by talking about that, and there is quite a lot of data from the world

  5. of psychology on this, and that is the temptation of human beings to kind of talk things up a

  6. little bit.

  7. As somebody who has stood at the back of churches, as people filed out one by one, and I would

  8. say, good morning, thank you for coming, how are you?

  9. I don't think anybody ever didn't say, I'm fine.

  10. I knew that some of them were deeply bereaved, some of them were suffering from mental health

  11. issues, some of them were struggling in marriages, and yet their default was to say, I'm fine.

  12. I did discover, although I was told to ask the question in this way was slightly anal,

  13. if you say to people, on a scale of one to ten, where would you put your life at this time?

  14. Ten being, it's the most amazing time in my life, I love it.

  15. One being, I need to call Samaritans.

  16. People will then generally think about it, and they'll probably say six, seven, maybe

  17. give a little more truth to it.

  18. Or again, one of the things I've noticed is, it's almost like when people go on holiday,

  19. and the weather's terrible, they kind of don't like to admit it.

  20. They come home and you say, oh, you know, I'm so sorry, you know, your holiday must have

  21. been awful, you know, the weather was terrible, and you had the kids with you, and you know,

  22. I know from my own experience that when it pours with rain, and you've got your children

  23. with you, it's more expensive, you've got to find stuff to do.

  24. People would say, oh no, we had sun, you know, it's fine, thank you very much for asking.

  25. We talk things up, and I want you to hold that thought, if you can, as we come to the

  26. text in a few moments to the church in Sardis.

  27. So the second thing I want to say by way of introducing this is another aspect of our modern

  28. culture, and that is what I call when image trumps substance.

  29. What I mean by that is, and social media has truly turbocharged this, that it's made life

  30. kind of performative.

  31. And you can go on websites and you will see people who are basically, I mean, there's so

  32. many video clips of people just dancing in front of the camera, not very good dancing often,

  33. but dancing, because that's what they do.

  34. Or if you click on beauty products, you will find thousands and thousands and thousands,

  35. I mean, obviously I don't, but you will find thousands and thousands and thousands of offers

  36. made by young people, very often whose image has been airbrushed.

  37. What you're looking at is not the real person.

  38. You are looking at the image that they want to project.

  39. And I don't think God is that concerned with image.

  40. Remember, in the Old Testament, he said that man looks at the outward appearance,

  41. God looks at the heart.

  42. I don't know, you know, whether you look in the mirror every morning and say, you know,

  43. thank God, Lord, that you made me so beautiful.

  44. I feel sure you may not.

  45. But look, what God's interested in, and this is hard in our culture, is the cultivation of

  46. what we might call inner beauty.

  47. Who are you?

  48. What are you like?

  49. And at the end of the day, no amount of cosmetic surgery, no amount of makeup,

  50. no amount of these things can hide what you are inside.

  51. Was it John Lennon who wrote that song and his strapline was,

  52. one thing you can't hide is when you're bitter.

  53. Is it bitter?

  54. Is it bitter?

  55. Inside.

  56. Something like that.

  57. Third thing is, one of the things that I think can be true of us all is that we can

  58. so quickly become complacent.

  59. You know, I've said many times, when I say from this pulpit, I mean in this church,

  60. I've said many, many times that there are a lot of things that we have in our culture,

  61. which approximately 60% of the world does not have.

  62. Most of us, maybe not all of us, can put food on the table in this country.

  63. Most of us sleep on a bed, unless we've got a bad back.

  64. Most of us have got running water.

  65. Most of us have got sanitation plugged into our homes.

  66. There are billions of people worldwide who just don't know things like that.

  67. And I mean, I'm not asking you to shout out, but I mean, I wonder deep down if ever we take things like that for granted.

  68. A kind of hallmark of complacency.

  69. And then finally, by way of introduction, I think another human trait is our capacity to be deluded.

  70. That is to imagine things about ourselves that nobody else imagines.

  71. And this is not an important, actually, in churches where we talk about spiritual gifts, quite rightly.

  72. And we talk about how the Spirit gives those gifts to his people in order that the church can be the church,

  73. and in order that the church can serve the world and glorify God.

  74. But how do I find out what my gift is?

  75. What I've discovered is, as somebody used to be in local church ministry,

  76. there are a number of people who stalk this planet,

  77. who imagine that their primary gift is something that nobody else who stalks the planet thinks is their primary gift.

  78. I used to stand next to, for a little while when I was in a local church ministry,

  79. in the evening we had the remnants of a choir.

  80. In fact, one person.

  81. Who I think just liked wearing robes and used to stand next to me.

  82. And have you heard that thing that, you know, somebody said,

  83. if you gave a monkey a typewriter,

  84. eventually, randomly, just by banging the keys, it would type a word.

  85. Well, on that same principle, you might think that somebody who's in a choir might hit a note that was right occasionally,

  86. and we're talking about Cyril.

  87. And when I said to Cyril, forgive me for asking, you know, but why are you in the choir?

  88. He said, what do you mean?

  89. I said, well, A, there's only one of you, so the idea of leading the congregation in singing is,

  90. you know, a bit of a long shot, frankly.

  91. I said, but also, you can't sing in tune.

  92. Oh, yes, Rector, he said, I know that.

  93. So I'm like, really?

  94. He said, yeah.

  95. He said, I only joined the choir because I was so sorry for Mr. Lawrence, your predecessor,

  96. that he was on his own at the front of the church.

  97. I thought, I'll go and stand there and join him.

  98. I won't tell you the long story now, but we discovered that Cyril's primary gift was working with his hands.

  99. And he became a completely different person when he was released to be the odd job person around our church.

  100. Sadly, I had to get rid of the choir altogether before I could get him out of his robes.

  101. When I say get rid of the choir altogether, I mean, actually, I asked Cyril not to stand at the front in robes when our music group were holding forth.

  102. We can have illusions about ourselves that become quite dangerous when they become delusions.

  103. And I would imagine that most human beings, at some point, exercise a level of delusion in their lives.

  104. And here's a church where I think all these human characteristics are at work.

  105. Risen Christ said, these are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars.

  106. We'll come back to that.

  107. I know your deeds.

  108. You have a reputation of being alive.

  109. But you are dead.

  110. As you well know, you know, I used to function as a bishop.

  111. And so I went round to loads and loads of different churches.

  112. Sat in the house of bishops, you know, the seat of decision making amongst the bishops who were making decisions to take to the general synod of the Church of England.

  113. I have rarely been in a group that felt the need to talk up what really wasn't very good.

  114. And that is the statistics that go with the Church of England.

  115. I lamented the day that the Church of England appointed PR people who earn a lot of money by trying to create an image for the Church,

  116. which actually isn't anything to do with the Church in reality.

  117. I've been part of a conspiracy in the Church called complacency.

  118. I look back over my ministry.

  119. I think to myself, did I speak up enough?

  120. Did I try and speak prophetically and biblically in the kind of corridors of power of the Church of England?

  121. Or were there more things that were important to me than that?

  122. Like my reputation?

  123. And when illusion becomes delusion,

  124. I cannot think that the risen Christ could have said anything more condemning of that Church

  125. than your reputation is that you're alive.

  126. But I know.

  127. He who knows everything,

  128. I know you are dead.

  129. And I ask myself the question,

  130. I wonder if the risen Christ were, you know, dictating letters today.

  131. How many churches would fall victim to the same accusation?

  132. And I just thought,

  133. I don't know why I thought this,

  134. but I thought that,

  135. I'd just like to highlight,

  136. I mean, this is not,

  137. you know, I haven't been up to Mount Sinai

  138. and come down with these ideas.

  139. But I, you know,

  140. my experience is having worked in a local church

  141. and then having supervision over 260 of them.

  142. These are the things that I've noticed

  143. are in a church where I think the church could be described as alive.

  144. So I just want to take your time,

  145. if I may,

  146. just for a few minutes

  147. to introduce to you the characteristics of a healthy church.

  148. The first thing,

  149. godly leadership.

  150. Let me say that again,

  151. godly leadership.

  152. Men and women who understand

  153. what it is to be a minister of God,

  154. understand what it is to be the least of God's servants,

  155. not somebody who is owed a living by their congregation.

  156. Godly leaders understand

  157. that in their own strength,

  158. they can do nothing of eternal value

  159. and therefore constantly throw themselves before God,

  160. seeking His will,

  161. seeking His strength,

  162. and seeking,

  163. seeking the knowledge

  164. that's needed

  165. to lead a local church.

  166. Kind of,

  167. you know,

  168. just an aside really,

  169. but one of the things

  170. that used to puzzle me

  171. was that I'd have clergy coming to me saying,

  172. you know,

  173. they were on the edge of burnout

  174. and I would say,

  175. well,

  176. take me through your week

  177. and take me through your week

  178. and I'd think,

  179. why are they saying this?

  180. You know,

  181. they've either got very low capacity

  182. or

  183. there's something that doesn't add up here.

  184. What I learned was,

  185. if you're coming to see the bishop,

  186. people are frightened

  187. to talk about reality in their own lives

  188. because they fear,

  189. I'm going to get a black pen out

  190. and make a mark

  191. in their personnel file

  192. saying,

  193. you know,

  194. clueless,

  195. something like that.

  196. And actually,

  197. the acceptable way

  198. to talk about their pain

  199. was to talk about

  200. physical tiredness.

  201. Most of you

  202. are church members

  203. and I want to tell you

  204. what I think is the real drag

  205. on a lot of clergy,

  206. which they can't talk about

  207. because they think

  208. it might make them look bad.

  209. And it's this.

  210. Church leadership

  211. is about the oversight

  212. of a rather complicated set

  213. of interpersonal relationships

  214. whose balance

  215. is very easily imbalanced

  216. and conflict

  217. and trouble begin.

  218. Godly leadership

  219. understands this

  220. and seeks to build trust

  221. with the people

  222. to whom he or she

  223. has been called to minister.

  224. The second thing,

  225. highly contentious

  226. in my own church,

  227. but not so contentious

  228. for many of you,

  229. biblical integrity.

  230. That is,

  231. what does this church teach?

  232. my view is,

  233. there is only

  234. one piece of guidance

  235. we have

  236. if we want to build faith

  237. in the church.

  238. It comes in Romans

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  239. chapter 10

  240. and

  241. the great apostle

  242. tells us that

  243. faith comes through

  244. hearing

  245. and hearing

  246. through the word

  247. of Christ.

  248. Jesus himself

  249. told us

  250. in that parable

  251. of the two house builders,

  252. a wise man

  253. is like a man

  254. who hears

  255. my words

  256. and puts them

  257. into practice.

  258. So if you want to build

  259. some rock

  260. into your life

  261. and if you're a church leader

  262. and you want to build

  263. some rock

  264. into the life

  265. of the church

  266. that you have

  267. responsibility for,

  268. here's my advice,

  269. preach the word of God

  270. in season

  271. and out of season.

  272. use it

  273. to teach,

  274. train,

  275. rebuke,

  276. whatever

  277. but don't let

  278. the Bible

  279. be put on

  280. the substitutes

  281. bench

  282. of your church

  283. life.

  284. Thirdly,

  285. I think

  286. in a healthy

  287. church

  288. people are

  289. faithful

  290. in worship

  291. and in prayer.

  292. it would be

  293. a strange church

  294. wouldn't it

  295. who decided

  296. they would stop

  297. worshipping God

  298. together.

  299. Though there seem

  300. to be a number

  301. of churches

  302. around today

  303. which have

  304. almost come

  305. to that conclusion.

  306. And faithful

  307. in prayer,

  308. I am,

  309. I love

  310. getting together

  311. with

  312. people in our

  313. church

  314. to pray.

  315. And we have

  316. some set

  317. prayer meetings

  318. and it's really

  319. good to turn up

  320. at them.

  321. I was in a church

  322. which had a large

  323. membership

  324. and our parish

  325. prayer meeting

  326. on a good evening

  327. might muster

  328. 40 people.

  329. It's a weekly

  330. meeting,

  331. might muster

  332. 40 people.

  333. And once I got

  334. a guy called

  335. Wallace Ben

  336. to come and

  337. do a

  338. weekend away

  339. for the church

  340. on prayer

  341. it was excellent.

  342. And

  343. for about

  344. for a few

  345. weeks we had

  346. almost 200

  347. people at the

  348. prayer meeting.

  349. After about

  350. a month

  351. I had gone

  352. down to 60

  353. and after

  354. two months

  355. we were

  356. back to

  357. 30.

  358. Same.

  359. Mostly

  360. older ladies.

  361. Many of them

  362. ex-missionaries

  363. or ex-teachers.

  364. And I've

  365. never understood

  366. why is it?

  367. I'm not

  368. saying you know

  369. you've got to

  370. come to a

  371. church meeting

  372. to be

  373. faithful in

  374. prayer.

  375. But I do

  376. think there is

  377. something that

  378. goes on when

  379. we pray together.

  380. I really do

  381. believe that.

  382. Fourthly a

  383. healthy church

  384. empowers people.

  385. It seeks to

  386. build discipleship.

  387. Ministry is

  388. not about

  389. controlling

  390. people.

  391. It's setting

  392. them free.

  393. Fifth thing

  394. is it

  395. helps if

  396. your church

  397. has a vision.

  398. There's a lot

  399. of stuff talked

  400. about that out

  401. there in the

  402. marketplace.

  403. place.

  404. And I want

  405. to say that

  406. you

  407. once you've

  408. got your

  409. mission statement

  410. or your vision

  411. statement put

  412. together

  413. that you

  414. know a lot

  415. of churches

  416. behave like

  417. that's the

  418. end.

  419. I remember

  420. the Roman

  421. Catholic

  422. Archbishop of

  423. Leeds

  424. told a story

  425. of he had a

  426. dream one

  427. night and in

  428. his dream he

  429. dreamt that

  430. outside his

  431. church there

  432. would be a

  433. banner and

  434. it said

  435. Jesus is

  436. Lord on the

  437. banner and

  438. he woke up

  439. very enthused

  440. and then he

  441. went to bed a

  442. few days later

  443. and he had a

  444. total nightmare

  445. and he saw

  446. that outside

  447. all the Roman

  448. Catholic churches

  449. in the Archdiocese

  450. of Leeds

  451. there was a

  452. sign and it

  453. said on the

  454. banner we've

  455. always done it

  456. this way.

  457. Again a

  458. vision isn't

  459. the end it's

  460. the beginning

  461. and I would

  462. suggest that

  463. alongside a

  464. vision what a

  465. local church

  466. needs is a

  467. plan and

  468. then it needs

  469. to work out

  470. how we're

  471. going to

  472. effect this

  473. plan and

  474. most importantly

  475. and I rarely

  476. met a church

  477. that did this

  478. you then need

  479. to apply some

  480. metrics to

  481. say this is

  482. what we

  483. said this is

  484. what we

  485. envision this

  486. is what we

  487. said we

  488. would do

  489. how do we

  490. know if

  491. we're achieving

  492. it?

  493. How can we

  494. measure that?

  495. Sixthly by

  496. the way these

  497. are in no

  498. order of

  499. importance so

  500. probably godly

  501. leadership and

  502. faithful worship

  503. and prayer which

  504. should be an

  505. R somewhere near

  506. the top.

  507. A healthy

  508. church is

  509. concerned for

  510. the lost.

  511. lost.

  512. You know

  513. why use that

  514. language?

  515. Well in

  516. Luke 15 you

  517. get this

  518. incredible

  519. section of

  520. teaching that

  521. Jesus gave.

  522. First of all

  523. there's the

  524. lost coin

  525. sorry the

  526. lost sheep

  527. and then the

  528. lost coin

  529. and then the

  530. prodigal of

  531. the prodigal

  532. the parable of

  533. the prodigal

  534. son lost

  535. son and

  536. then you

  537. get the

  538. parable

  539. there's a

  540. parable about

  541. a lost

  542. job and

  543. Jesus seems

  544. to or at

  545. least Luke is

  546. arranging his

  547. material to get

  548. across the

  549. message that

  550. lost people

  551. matter to

  552. God and

  553. therefore they

  554. should matter

  555. to his

  556. people.

  557. I you know

  558. this I really

  559. liked church

  560. fellowship you

  561. know I like the

  562. people in the

  563. church I was

  564. minister of you

  565. know and I

  566. liked hanging

  567. out well hanging

  568. out with most

  569. of them but the

  570. danger of that is

  571. your whole

  572. relationship span

  573. can get locked

  574. into church

  575. life.

  576. I remember

  577. preaching a

  578. sermon on

  579. evangelism and

  580. telling people you

  581. know talk to your

  582. friends about

  583. Christ and a lot

  584. of people came to

  585. me and said well

  586. we don't have any

  587. friends who are not

  588. in the church.

  589. I remember a

  590. Salvation Army

  591. minister said that

  592. to James Kennedy

  593. the founder of

  594. Evangelism

  595. Explosion amazing

  596. man came to our

  597. fraternity in

  598. Slough goodness

  599. knows how that

  600. happened and so

  601. we're there and the

  602. Salvation Army guy

  603. said well you know

  604. how you know how do

  605. we make contact with

  606. unbelievers you know

  607. James Kennedy said to

  608. him he said why don't

  609. you go down to the

  610. nudist beach.

  611. I think it was a

  612. joke.

  613. Healthy church is

  614. concerned to loss and

  615. then finally imaginatively

  616. engages the local

  617. community.

  618. I say imaginatively

  619. there because I think

  620. that one of the things

  621. we learn from the

  622. parable of the good

  623. Samaritan is that the

  624. Samaritan didn't just

  625. patch up this guy and

  626. leave him he took him to

  627. an inn and then paid

  628. for him to get some

  629. accommodation there

  630. while he recovered.

  631. I would say that's

  632. imagination.

  633. So here's a dead

  634. church in Sardis.

  635. Here's my view of

  636. what a church that is

  637. alive might look like.

  638. So I want to move to

  639. the text now to

  640. Sardis.

  641. Sardis today is the

  642. city of Izmir.

  643. If you go to

  644. Turkey on your

  645. holidays the

  646. likelihood is you'll

  647. fly into the

  648. airport at Izmir.

  649. It's in Turkey and

  650. today it's a kind of

  651. modern bustling city.

  652. There's a big port there

  653. and there is a little

  654. bit of the ancient

  655. town of Sardis left

  656. but mostly it's been

  657. overtaken by modern

  658. building.

  659. The role of Izmir in

  660. antiquity and I'm

  661. talking about maybe

  662. from 400 AD onwards

  663. it kind of took on the

  664. role that Ephesus had

  665. had.

  666. If you've been to

  667. Ephesus you know it's

  668. about three miles inland

  669. from the sea but you

  670. can go and stand on the

  671. jetty which used to be

  672. where the sea was.

  673. It's silted up and so

  674. it's now inland.

  675. Izmir in a way has

  676. taken over the role of

  677. Ephesus in modern

  678. Turkey.

  679. It's a big port and

  680. lots and lots of goods

  681. are exported through

  682. there.

  683. You'll be aware that

  684. Turkey today is a

  685. massive manufacturing

  686. nation and quite a lot

  687. of our stuff that we

  688. have in our shops comes

  689. to us from Turkey.

  690. In Izmir there was a

  691. massive temple right

  692. on the headland and I

  693. have read that it was

  694. twice the size of the

  695. Parthenon in Greece and

  696. if you've been there you

  697. realise we're talking

  698. about a very big

  699. building.

  700. The old town of Sardis

  701. was built on a

  702. headland so three sides

  703. were impregnable.

  704. And then there was just a

  705. very thin isthmus which was

  706. very easy to defend and

  707. because of that, hold this

  708. thought, because of that

  709. they considered it

  710. impregnable.

  711. And though it was

  712. impregnable it was twice

  713. fatally invaded.

  714. On it was this temple of

  715. Artemis

  716. Cybele.

  717. This is not the same as the

  718. Roman and Greek god of

  719. Artemis.

  720. This is a local

  721. Anatolian god called

  722. Artemis

  723. Cybele.

  724. Only really commemorated

  725. in Sardis.

  726. And Sardis has a

  727. similarity with, I was

  728. trying to think of a

  729. modern day city which

  730. went the way of, and I

  731. came up in my mind with

  732. Detroit in North America

  733. which at one time was an

  734. extremely affluent place

  735. that earned a lot because

  736. the car industry of the

  737. United States of America

  738. America was largely based

  739. there.

  740. And as more Americans

  741. bought more Japanese

  742. cars and the market

  743. dipped, etc, etc,

  744. Detroit, you can buy it

  745. now, well I don't know

  746. now, but five years ago

  747. you could buy a whole

  748. street in Detroit for

  749. $120,000.

  750. I don't think there'd be

  751. many places in America

  752. where you would achieve

  753. that.

  754. And in 600, a king

  755. called Croesus

  756. had governance

  757. of the city of

  758. Sardis.

  759. And he was a very,

  760. very wealthy man.

  761. And things were

  762. good.

  763. It was profitable.

  764. They were known

  765. for their,

  766. they were good at

  767. dye stuffs and they

  768. dyed a lot of

  769. cloth in different

  770. colours.

  771. Purple was a very

  772. popular colour.

  773. I don't know if I

  774. told you this last

  775. time when we were

  776. talking about

  777. Thyatira, but purple

  778. was popular because

  779. it was the Roman

  780. regal colour.

  781. It's the colour of

  782. choice for people who

  783. are in governance in.

  784. If you wore purple,

  785. you were somebody.

  786. Which incidentally,

  787. hard to believe,

  788. is why bishops

  789. traditionally wore

  790. purple.

  791. they opted for the

  792. Roman Catholic

  793. model of

  794. episcopacy and

  795. wore purple.

  796. That is, you

  797. know, to show

  798. people, at least it

  799. would have been in

  800. Roman times, to show

  801. people that you were

  802. somebody.

  803. The city was

  804. pretty well

  805. defunct and

  806. Croesus was

  807. defeated by

  808. Persians.

  809. And from then the

  810. city went from bad

  811. to worse.

  812. until the Romans

  813. arrived.

  814. And in AD 17,

  815. the Emperor

  816. Tiberius deployed

  817. a huge force of

  818. builders to rebuild

  819. the whole city.

  820. And it was

  821. rebuilt.

  822. So the risen

  823. Christ arrives

  824. there.

  825. And he's

  826. introduced to us

  827. again as him

  828. who holds the

  829. seven spirits.

  830. These are the

  831. words of him

  832. who holds the

  833. seven spirits of

  834. God and the

  835. seven stars.

  836. Interestingly, in

  837. the Greek text,

  838. there is no

  839. conjunction there.

  840. It just says

  841. how the seven

  842. spirits of God,

  843. the seven stars,

  844. implying that

  845. they're the same

  846. things.

  847. The only English

  848. version of the

  849. Bible, I think,

  850. that translates the

  851. Greek like that

  852. is the New

  853. English Bible.

  854. Clearly, the

  855. seven spirits,

  856. as we know

  857. from our early

  858. study, refers to

  859. the Holy Spirit

  860. to the churches

  861. in his fullness.

  862. Sorry, the Holy

  863. Spirit to the

  864. churches in his

  865. fullness.

  866. This is Jesus

  867. filled with the

  868. Holy Spirit

  869. addressing the

  870. churches.

  871. And the seven

  872. stars are mostly

  873. thought to be

  874. the seven churches

  875. and or their

  876. leaders.

  877. Jesus.

  878. So, the gravity

  879. of the

  880. accusation.

  881. I know your

  882. works.

  883. You remember in

  884. Ephesus, the

  885. risen Christ

  886. started his

  887. message with

  888. exactly the same

  889. words.

  890. But in this

  891. case, they are

  892. evidence of

  893. disapproval rather

  894. than evidence

  895. of approval.

  896. There is the

  897. evidence of

  898. their delusion.

  899. I know your

  900. deeds, you have

  901. a reputation of

  902. being alive, but

  903. you are dead.

  904. And of the

  905. works that they

  906. sought to do,

  907. in verse 2 we

  908. read that the

  909. risen Christ

  910. says, he's not

  911. found their

  912. deeds complete in

  913. the sight of

  914. God.

  915. the gravity

  916. of the message

  917. means that

  918. Jesus uses

  919. quite interventionist

  920. language.

  921. In verse 2, he

  922. tells them to

  923. wake up.

  924. He tells them to

  925. strengthen what

  926. remains.

  927. John Angle was

  928. telling me before

  929. we started, that's

  930. a very, very

  931. important verse

  932. for him in

  933. terms of his

  934. ministry overseas.

  935. Then he tells

  936. them they've got

  937. to remember.

  938. That remembering

  939. was such a big

  940. theme, wasn't it,

  941. in the Old

  942. Testament.

  943. When the

  944. Jewish people

  945. were going

  946. through times

  947. of hardship

  948. and difficulty,

  949. they were told,

  950. remember, remember

  951. the covenant that

  952. God made with

  953. you people.

  954. Remember the

  955. way he saved

  956. you from slavery

  957. in Egypt.

  958. And in

  959. remembering,

  960. there's a

  961. Greek verb

  962. which occurs

  963. words in,

  964. the words we

  965. use in

  966. communion about

  967. bringing to

  968. mind the

  969. things that

  970. Jesus did.

  971. The Greek

  972. word comes,

  973. is an

  974. amnesis.

  975. And it's not

  976. a kind of

  977. cold,

  978. nostalgic

  979. remembering.

  980. It's remembering

  981. the past in a

  982. way that will

  983. give us

  984. courage in the

  985. present and

  986. hope for the

  987. future.

  988. Wake up,

  989. strengthen what

  990. remains,

  991. remember, and

  992. then the

  993. risen Christ

  994. says, I

  995. will come

  996. to you.

  997. And then

  998. to the

  999. faithful few,

  1000. he says

  1001. this.

  1002. One, they

  1003. will walk

  1004. with me in

  1005. verse four.

  1006. I have

  1007. noticed when

  1008. visits to

  1009. the Middle

  1010. East, and

  1011. to places

  1012. like Africa

  1013. as well,

  1014. that very

  1015. often when

  1016. I've been

  1017. visiting

  1018. church leaders

  1019. there, they

  1020. love to

  1021. kind of walk

  1022. with you.

  1023. And many,

  1024. many times, I

  1025. remember with

  1026. the Archbishop

  1027. of Uganda,

  1028. we kind of

  1029. met very

  1030. formally and

  1031. exchanged gifts

  1032. and all that

  1033. stuff.

  1034. And then he

  1035. said, come

  1036. with me.

  1037. And we

  1038. walked around

  1039. his garden

  1040. for ages.

  1041. And he

  1042. walked around

  1043. and all the

  1044. time he

  1045. held my

  1046. hand and

  1047. stroked it

  1048. while he

  1049. was talking

  1050. to me.

  1051. I'm not

  1052. really used

  1053. to that.

  1054. But I've

  1055. noticed that,

  1056. I noticed

  1057. it with

  1058. Bishop

  1059. Munir in

  1060. Egypt,

  1061. and I can't

  1062. remember his

  1063. name now,

  1064. the Bishop

  1065. of Iran,

  1066. who of course

  1067. can't live in

  1068. Iran.

  1069. It's a kind

  1070. of walking

  1071. with somebody

  1072. is more than

  1073. just a walk.

  1074. faith.

  1075. It's a way

  1076. of kind of

  1077. expressing

  1078. trust and

  1079. affection.

  1080. Secondly,

  1081. they will

  1082. wear a

  1083. white robe.

  1084. I mean,

  1085. that imagery

  1086. comes up a

  1087. lot in

  1088. Revelation,

  1089. that the

  1090. faithful will

  1091. be given

  1092. a white

  1093. robe.

  1094. The use

  1095. of it here

  1096. seems to

  1097. me to be

  1098. in line

  1099. with the

  1100. rest of

  1101. Scripture,

  1102. that it

  1103. will be the

  1104. faithful few

  1105. who are

  1106. given a

  1107. white robe.

  1108. And even

  1109. those who've

  1110. been given

  1111. a white

  1112. robe have

  1113. the opportunity,

  1114. have the

  1115. possibility,

  1116. that they

  1117. can soil

  1118. them.

  1119. And their

  1120. names will

  1121. be indelibly

  1122. put into

  1123. the book

  1124. of life.

  1125. Verse 5.

  1126. The book

  1127. of life

  1128. has a

  1129. kind of

  1130. long

  1131. biblical

  1132. history,

  1133. and also

  1134. is

  1135. mentioned

  1136. a couple

  1137. of times

  1138. in the

  1139. Revelation

  1140. of St.

  1141. John.

  1142. It first

  1143. comes up

  1144. in Scripture

  1145. in

  1146. Exodus

    Exodus 32 chapter mention

  1147. chapter

  1148. 32,

  1149. and

  1150. verses

  1151. 31 to

  1152. 33.

  1153. So what's

  1154. happened here

  1155. is the

  1156. people of

  1157. God have

  1158. just been

  1159. found

  1160. worshipping

  1161. golden

  1162. images.

  1163. So Moses

  1164. said to

  1165. the people,

  1166. you've

  1167. committed a

  1168. great sin,

  1169. but now I

  1170. will go up

  1171. to the

  1172. Lord.

  1173. Perhaps I

  1174. can make

  1175. atonement

  1176. for your

  1177. sin.

  1178. So Moses

  1179. went back

  1180. to the

  1181. Lord and

  1182. said,

  1183. oh what a

  1184. great sin

  1185. these people

  1186. have committed.

  1187. They have

  1188. made themselves

  1189. gods of

  1190. gold,

  1191. but now

  1192. please

  1193. forgive

  1194. their sin.

  1195. But if

  1196. not,

  1197. then block

  1198. me out

  1199. of the

  1200. book you

  1201. have

  1202. written.

  1203. again

  1204. comes up

  1205. in

  1206. Psalm

  1207. 139

  1208. and

  1209. verse

  1210. 16.

  1211. We

  1212. read

  1213. there.

  1214. Sorry,

  1215. let me get

  1216. the light

  1217. on this.

  1218. Verse

  1219. 16.

  1220. Your eyes

  1221. saw my

  1222. unformed

  1223. body.

  1224. All the

  1225. days

  1226. ordained

  1227. for me

  1228. were

  1229. written

  1230. in your

  1231. book

  1232. before

  1233. one of

  1234. them

  1235. came

  1236. to be.

  1237. I mean

  1238. that's an

  1239. amazing

  1240. verse,

  1241. isn't it?

  1242. You know,

  1243. the days

  1244. of our

  1245. life

  1246. are

  1247. ordained

  1248. from the

  1249. moment we

  1250. are being

  1251. formed

  1252. in our

  1253. mother's

  1254. womb.

  1255. I know

  1256. people who

  1257. are

  1258. absolutists

  1259. on the

  1260. theme of

  1261. abortion borrow

  1262. on that

  1263. verse very

  1264. strongly to

  1265. say that,

  1266. you know,

  1267. we should

  1268. have far

  1269. more respect

  1270. for the

  1271. fetus because

  1272. God is

  1273. at work

  1274. when the

  1275. fetus is

  1276. in the

  1277. womb.

  1278. I'm not

  1279. trying to be

  1280. controversial,

  1281. I'm just

  1282. explaining the

  1283. way some

  1284. people use

  1285. the Bible.

  1286. But the

  1287. idea that

  1288. there is a

  1289. book,

  1290. and of

  1291. course the

  1292. Calvinists

  1293. love this,

  1294. because,

  1295. you know,

  1296. their thing

  1297. is,

  1298. well,

  1299. if our

  1300. names are

  1301. written in

  1302. the book

  1303. that early,

  1304. it means

  1305. we are

  1306. predestined

  1307. in some

  1308. way.

  1309. We are

  1310. already in

  1311. the book

  1312. of life.

  1313. People in

  1314. Sardis,

  1315. it doesn't

  1316. seem quite

  1317. so straightforward

  1318. for them,

  1319. does it?

  1320. Because

  1321. they're told

  1322. that only

  1323. the faithful,

  1324. only those

  1325. who wear

  1326. the white

  1327. robes,

  1328. will have

  1329. their names

  1330. indelibly

  1331. written in

  1332. the book

  1333. of life.

  1334. So,

  1335. Sardis,

  1336. a church

  1337. that I

  1338. find

  1339. deeply

  1340. challenging,

  1341. because I

  1342. think it

  1343. speaks to

  1344. the reality

  1345. of a lot

  1346. of churches

  1347. in the

  1348. Western

  1349. world,

  1350. in the

  1351. 21st

  1352. century.

  1353. In

  1354. 2000,

  1355. I was

  1356. asked to

  1357. speak at

  1358. the wonderful

  1359. Keswick

  1360. Convention,

  1361. which

  1362. interestingly

  1363. takes place

  1364. in Keswick.

  1365. And I

  1366. was asked

  1367. to give

  1368. what they

  1369. rather

  1370. grandiosely

  1371. call the

  1372. millennial

  1373. lecture.

  1374. And I

  1375. took as

  1376. my theme

  1377. why I

  1378. weep

  1379. for the

  1380. church.

  1381. And

  1382. without

  1383. repeating

  1384. the lecture

  1385. now,

  1386. I mean,

  1387. what I

  1388. said was,

  1389. you know,

  1390. how the

  1391. church in

  1392. this country

  1393. has had

  1394. so much

  1395. blessing,

  1396. so much

  1397. opportunity,

  1398. so much

  1399. church

  1400. plants,

  1401. so many

  1402. ministers,

  1403. so,

  1404. and basically

  1405. we're

  1406. presiding

  1407. over something

  1408. that is

  1409. diminishing

  1410. at high

  1411. speed.

  1412. Incidentally,

  1413. you compare

  1414. that with

  1415. the church

  1416. in America,

  1417. which everybody

  1418. thinks is a

  1419. lot more

  1420. robust,

  1421. and certainly

  1422. is more

  1423. robust than

  1424. we are

  1425. in the

  1426. United

  1427. Kingdom,

  1428. but it

  1429. is declining

  1430. at an

  1431. alarming rate

  1432. at the

  1433. moment.

  1434. I think I

  1435. may have

  1436. told you

  1437. last week,

  1438. I can't

  1439. remember who

  1440. I said

  1441. this to,

  1442. but

  1443. four and a

  1444. half thousand

  1445. churches were

  1446. closed in

  1447. 2022 in

  1448. America.

  1449. That's

  1450. mitigated

  1451. slightly by

  1452. the fact

  1453. that 3,500

  1454. churches were

  1455. started,

  1456. but if you

  1457. do the

  1458. math, it

  1459. works out

  1460. to 28

  1461. churches a

  1462. day being

  1463. closed.

  1464. I mean,

  1465. I would

  1466. say that's

  1467. enough,

  1468. wouldn't

  1469. you?

  1470. So,

  1471. I think

  1472. this church

  1473. has a lot

  1474. to say to

  1475. us, and

  1476. I think

  1477. that we

  1478. really have

  1479. to heed

  1480. these warnings,

  1481. these things

  1482. that the

  1483. risen Christ

  1484. said to

  1485. them.

  1486. Waken

  1487. up,

  1488. strengthen

  1489. what remains,

  1490. remember

  1491. that in

  1492. this country

  1493. we have

  1494. been greatly

  1495. blessed with

  1496. the gospel

  1497. since maybe

  1498. as early as

  1499. the fifth

  1500. century,

  1501. maybe earlier,

  1502. and we

  1503. mustn't be

  1504. complacent,

  1505. and we

  1506. mustn't stand

  1507. over,

  1508. decline,

  1509. feeling

  1510. complacent,

  1511. and oh,

  1512. there's

  1513. nothing.

  1514. I mean,

  1515. the number

  1516. of times

  1517. I went to

  1518. churches and

  1519. I said,

  1520. you know,

  1521. last time I

  1522. was here,

  1523. there seemed

  1524. to be a lot

  1525. more people

  1526. here,

  1527. and the

  1528. church wardens

  1529. said,

  1530. well,

  1531. we do what

  1532. we do if

  1533. they don't

  1534. like it.

  1535. Tough

  1536. love.

  1537. Is that

  1538. really the

  1539. mark of a

  1540. healthy church?

  1541. I don't

  1542. think so.

  1543. Wake up,

  1544. strengthen

  1545. what remains.

  1546. Do your

  1547. remembering of

  1548. the blessings

  1549. that God

  1550. has given

  1551. you,

  1552. not with

  1553. sentimentality,

  1554. but in

  1555. remembering

  1556. that we

  1557. might find

  1558. courage for

  1559. today and

  1560. hope for

  1561. tomorrow.

  1562. And if we

  1563. do that,

  1564. says the

  1565. risen Christ,

  1566. you will

  1567. know my

  1568. presence.

  1569. Maybe in

  1570. new ways,

  1571. maybe for the

  1572. first time,

  1573. wonderful when

  1574. a church

  1575. awakes,

  1576. isn't it,

  1577. and comes

  1578. to life.

  1579. So,

  1580. just to

  1581. recap very

  1582. quickly,

  1583. what have

  1584. we learnt?

  1585. We've

  1586. learnt that

  1587. Ephesus,

  1588. doctrinal purity

  1589. without love,

  1590. is not what the

  1591. risen Christ

  1592. calls us to.

  1593. Love without

  1594. doctrinal

  1595. understanding

  1596. leaves the

  1597. church undefended

  1598. to those

  1599. who prevail.

  1600. We'll be

  1601. given as a

  1602. gift, not

  1603. anything we

  1604. can earn,

  1605. eternal life.

  1606. And Paul

  1607. quite often

  1608. uses the

  1609. idea of

  1610. keeping our

  1611. eyes on the

  1612. promises of

  1613. God that

  1614. will be

  1615. realised in

  1616. the future.

  1617. Constantly

  1618. molitor the

  1619. balance between

  1620. collusion and

  1621. compromise.

  1622. What a

  1623. message that

  1624. is to the

  1625. 21st century

  1626. Western

  1627. church.

  1628. You can

  1629. fool all of

  1630. the people,

  1631. but you

  1632. can't fool

  1633. God.

  1634. Sardis.

  1635. Avoid

  1636. idolatry.

  1637. Big deal

  1638. in our

  1639. culture.

  1640. Be very

  1641. careful with

  1642. the slippery

  1643. concept of

  1644. tolerance.

  1645. Good up to

  1646. a point,

  1647. but comes a

  1648. point, it

  1649. just becomes

  1650. a total

  1651. cop-out.

  1652. Be honest

  1653. about yourselves.

  1654. it was the

  1655. fault in

  1656. Sardis,

  1657. that they

  1658. had a

  1659. great

  1660. reputation,

  1661. but the

  1662. risen Christ

  1663. could see

  1664. exactly what

  1665. was going

  1666. on.

  1667. Focus on

  1668. substance,

  1669. not image.

  1670. image.

  1671. I think it

  1672. would be far

  1673. better if

  1674. imagining

  1675. that, you

  1676. know, any

  1677. amount of

  1678. cosmetic

  1679. surgery or

  1680. makeup would

  1681. make us

  1682. beautiful.

  1683. Instead of

  1684. thinking about

  1685. that when we

  1686. stand in

  1687. front of a

  1688. mirror, maybe

  1689. it would be

  1690. better for us

  1691. to just remind

  1692. ourselves when

  1693. we stand in

  1694. front of a

  1695. mirror, I

  1696. am fearfully

  1697. and wonderfully

  1698. made by the

  1699. God who

  1700. loves me.

  1701. Amen.
