  1. As we pray together, Father God, may your word this morning encourage us and empower us afresh.

  2. In Jesus' name, amen.

  3. Why does this surprise you?

  4. I love that line in this scripture.

  5. Why does this surprise you?

  6. We are called to witness and trust.

  7. And maybe you can recall, like I can, moments in your life where not only your life was changed, but in your life someone else's life was changed too because you witnessed.

  8. Because you took that time to stand alongside someone and sense that encouragement that the Lord gave you for that moment in time.

  9. Because we took a step of faith.

  10. And here in this morning's reading is one of those most beautiful, amazing, powerful, emotional encounters in scripture that we read that really, really encourages me.

  11. And I hope it encourages you too.

  12. And yet for some, the miraculous nature of this encounter that we've heard about this morning between Peter and John and this man who had his life changed,

  13. dramatically and beautifully transformed and changed, dramatically and beautifully transformed and changed in an instant, maybe for some beyond our understanding.

  14. A leap or a step of faith too far maybe.

  15. Whether it's healing, whether it's healing, whether it's healing, emotional, physical, whether it's a reawakening in somebody's life of their faith, a new beginning, healing from the past, looking with fresh hope towards something in the future.

  16. We witness, we witness, we witness, we witness, we witness, we witness, we witness, we are called to witness the realisation that Jesus is with us.

  17. And is with us, not just with us as a presence, but with us in power.

  18. We are called to these encounters, each and every one of us.

  19. It's not just for a few who may think that they are super spiritual or whatever.

  20. We are each and every one of us called as disciples and followers of Christ.

  21. We are all called to witness to our faith.

  22. Our Christianity, our faith, our following of Jesus, I can assure you is not a spectator sport.

  23. Please hear that this morning.

  24. We are not here to just watch on in awe and wonder.

  25. We are called to be participants in what God is doing.

  26. This is alive, it's engaging, and it's real.

  27. And it has been so down the ages and will be today as well.

  28. I've been rereading, it's a little book, and if you know that I am a visual learner,

  29. you'll know that I always look for a little book to read.

  30. It's my thing.

  31. But one of the little books, but with a big message that I've been reading,

  32. is Practicing the Presence of God.

  33. And it's an amazing book, and I would encourage you to reread it,

  34. because it was teachings collected about a man called Brother Lawrence,

  35. who lived in the 17th century as a Carmelite monk.

  36. Now, the compilation of letters that people brought together,

  37. as well as records of his conversation,

  38. of those who saw and witnessed Brother Lawrence's ministry.

  39. Was he a big stage speaker?

  40. No, he wasn't.

  41. Was he, did he write theological books?

  42. No, he didn't.

  43. He washed dishes.

  44. That was his job.

  45. In the monastery, he washed dishes.

  46. And people came from far and wide to stand beside him,

  47. and I hope they helped with the drying up.

  48. But they came to stand alongside him,

  49. to hear his wisdom of all that God was saying in him and through him.

  50. And lives were changed and transformed,

  51. so much so that people wrote about it.

  52. The presence of God that was on him and in him and in his everyday workplace.

  53. And again, that is where God is at work with us.

  54. And every day, in our workplace, wherever we are,

  55. those who just came to be with him.

  56. And we are each called to be witnesses.

  57. In each and every place that we're going to be this week,

  58. let's seek and ask more and more of the presence of God in our lives.

  59. And trust in him in the everyday.

  60. Be encouraged.

  61. Trust in God.

  62. He is with us 24-7.

  63. So let's come back to our scripture.

  64. Peter and John remember just a short while before

  65. that they were hidden away in an upper room.

  66. They were afraid.

  67. They were frightened men.

  68. They wouldn't go out and witness as they are doing in our scripture today.

  69. But something happened.

  70. And they were transformed and changed

  71. because of the risen Jesus.

  72. Their faith had been probably at rock bottom.

  73. Then they transformed, empowered, encouraged, enthused

  74. through the risen Jesus

  75. and the power of the Holy Spirit

  76. working in them and through him.

  77. As have we, I hope.

  78. Because we have that opportunity.

  79. We have seen.

  80. We heard.

  81. We know that Jesus is risen

  82. and we can go out empowered afresh

  83. in the Holy Spirit today

  84. to do what they've been doing.

  85. Now, I don't know what you're like at gifts.

  86. I don't know what you're like at gifts.

  87. I'm probably, I'm not being,

  88. yeah, I'm not just speaking to the guys here,

  89. but it's good to listen, guys.

  90. It's good to listen.

  91. I have learned over 41 years of marriage

  92. that it's good to listen.

  93. And I listen during the year.

  94. And often Mandy will come

  95. and she will just drop a subtle hint

  96. and say, oh, that's really nice.

  97. I like that.

  98. And so I squirrel back into the shop,

  99. whatever time,

  100. and you get this gift in.

  101. And then when it comes to an anniversary

  102. or Christmas sort of thing,

  103. oh, wow, that's great.

  104. And the gift isn't so much in the giving,

  105. but I love watching the gift being received.

  106. Surely that's God for us.

  107. Surely that's God for us.

  108. He must enjoy us using and seeing the gifts

  109. that he so freely gives to each and every one of us.

  110. And in our story,

  111. here are two men who know the blessing

  112. and the transformational change

  113. that they have experienced.

  114. And they want to share this gift with other people.

  115. They trust and they know.

  116. This gift to them through Jesus,

  117. his ministry and power,

  118. isn't a gift to keep to themselves.

  119. This is a gift to share.

  120. Look again at the text.

  121. They are on their way to pray.

  122. One day, Peter and John were going to the temple

  123. at the time of prayer at three in the afternoon.

  124. Really important line in the scripture.

  125. They haven't jettisoned what they're doing

  126. in the everyday.

  127. They go back.

  128. They've gone back to what they are doing

  129. because of the past.

  130. They are going about their everyday business.

  131. That's the place in which they ministered.

  132. And they are open in every moment

  133. to the power of God and the opportunities.

  134. If anything, it is increased in them.

  135. Increased in them as it will do in us.

  136. A deep, deep desire to serve and praise God

  137. because of what they've experienced.

  138. And there they are faced with what?

  139. Day after day, he has sat there.

  140. Challenge or opportunity?

  141. And that's the thing that faces all of us.

  142. Is this a challenge or an opportunity?

  143. So often we see issues that we would rather pass by.

  144. Let's be honest.

  145. Are we being honest this morning?

  146. A few people are nodding.

  147. Often we see things that we would rather pass by,

  148. wouldn't we?

  149. This guy has been taking up his place here for years

  150. in his life, begging.

  151. So what did he do?

  152. He asked for money.

  153. And isn't that just an easy fix?

  154. So often that's just an easy fix for us.

  155. Honestly, it is.

  156. You see in this reasoning,

  157. as it's fresh for us today

  158. in our discipleship and apprenticeship

  159. as it was then.

  160. Let's throw a bit of money at it

  161. and move on.

  162. And so often,

  163. you know, let's pay someone else

  164. to do the ministry.

  165. You know, I've seen that in churches for years.

  166. Let's pay somebody else to do the ministry

  167. and therefore it lets us off the hook.

  168. Let's throw money at it

  169. and we can walk away

  170. with a nice, warm, fuzzy feeling

  171. because we've done something.

  172. This man asked for money,

  173. but in their heart,

  174. that they know that they have far more to offer him.

  175. They've got far more than the money.

  176. In fact, they didn't have any money in their pocket.

  177. You see, my frustration as a Christian

  178. and in some areas of church,

  179. life is that we seek survival

  180. rather than the freedom that Jesus brings.

  181. Let's not just carry on with the ordinary,

  182. passing it by,

  183. but let's engage with it

  184. in the power of the Holy Spirit.

  185. And that's true to our Christian witness.

  186. This scripture screams at me,

  187. we have a gift to share,

  188. share it.

  189. Share it with people.

  190. Trust more in the presence

  191. and power of the Holy Spirit.

  192. Trust in the Lord with all your heart

  193. and don't lean on your own understanding.

  194. If there's a verse,

  195. the fridge magnet business

  196. would go out of business without that verse.

  197. I've seen it on so many different fridges.

  198. Trust in the Lord with all your heart

  199. and lean not on your own understanding.

  200. If we need to hold on to that,

  201. I don't know what's going to happen, Lord,

  202. but I know with you things can.

  203. We have a gift of offering Jesus to people

  204. new life and new freedom.

  205. Freedom from guilt,

  206. freedom from...

  207. If that's an ice cream van,

  208. mine is a Mivy.

  209. Is that right?

  210. I'll just share with you a minute.

  211. I'm glad we've got recordings here

  212. that we put in

  213. because I said to Mandy,

  214. on that great day

  215. when the Lord calls me home,

  216. I want...

  217. I want...

  218. Instead of going out to Bell's,

  219. I'd like an ice cream van played

  220. because that was my joy as a child.

  221. You know, so please remember that,

  222. will you, if my children don't.

  223. Freedom...

  224. Jumps on a horse riding by.

  225. Coming back.

  226. Freedom from guilt.

  227. Jesus brings freedom from guilt,

  228. freedom from issues of the past,

  229. freedom from a lack of self-worth,

  230. freedom from lies

  231. that have been spoken over us in our life.

  232. We offer people hope and a new dignity.

  233. That's what was happening that day.

  234. Just don't give me money.

  235. Give me something else.

  236. And they had it in their pocket

  237. and they gave it to him in full,

  238. what Jesus had to offer.

  239. We offer people hope and life everlasting.

  240. That's what the cross is about.

  241. We are in that Easter season.

  242. We are an Easter people.

  243. Peter and John, if they had money,

  244. they may have been tempted,

  245. as you and I have done,

  246. and just give and move on.

  247. Again, let's examine our hearts.

  248. I just sense sometimes

  249. we are given options and challenges

  250. and opportunities.

  251. And for them, that day, these two men,

  252. there was an option,

  253. an opportunity, and a challenge.

  254. But they knew the power

  255. that they were walking and living in.

  256. They weren't given the option

  257. because they had no money.

  258. Isn't that interesting?

  259. No money in their pocket.

  260. So they fell back and relied on God.

  261. Isn't that important?

  262. I may have cash.

  263. I may have a...

  264. Lord, I just want to come back to you

  265. because you are the beginning

  266. and you are the first

  267. and you are my all in all.

  268. But they know a deep sense of compassion

  269. that the Holy Spirit gives them

  270. and they can do more for this man.

  271. The gospel according to Clive Jennings.

  272. I'm really sorry, pal.

  273. I haven't been to the cash point.

  274. I haven't been to the cash point.

  275. But what I can do is,

  276. would you like me to pray with you?

  277. Big step for many of us.

  278. But stepping out in faith is so important.

  279. Now this is where it gets exciting

  280. and faith-filled for us

  281. as witnesses and disciples

  282. because we know what we have to share

  283. and you will know the scenarios

  284. in your own life

  285. of how this works.

  286. You know the person at the bus stop

  287. in the morning

  288. who on that wet morning

  289. with which we have had many

  290. is looking for lawn on a Monday morning,

  291. stood at the bus stop

  292. and you smile and you say,

  293. morning, how are you doing?

  294. Not so good.

  295. Do you mind if I sit with you on the bus?

  296. And you talk.

  297. And as you talk,

  298. you're praying

  299. and there may be an opportunity

  300. that the Lord gives you

  301. to pray for them.

  302. It's about a step out in faith.

  303. You will know the scenarios

  304. in your workplace,

  305. the places to which you go,

  306. the places that we're going to be

  307. tomorrow morning.

  308. Lord, show me the opportunities.

  309. Silver and gold have I none.

  310. But what I have,

  311. I can give you.

  312. And it's far more than that.

  313. I've got a story of a friend

  314. and I'm so glad Mandy's here

  315. because Mandy is my pearl of wisdom

  316. at times like this.

  317. Because we were,

  318. a friend of mine had had

  319. a horrific incident,

  320. had witnessed a horrific incident

  321. in his job.

  322. Ian was his name.

  323. And he had witnessed this

  324. and because of the effect

  325. it had on him,

  326. he had been told

  327. that he wouldn't work again.

  328. He was waking up at night

  329. screaming with night terrors

  330. because he had seen his friend

  331. killed in front of him,

  332. his colleague.

  333. We happened to meet with them

  334. just by chance on a holiday

  335. on a campsite down in Devon.

  336. And our children ran back

  337. and said,

  338. oh, you know,

  339. they're there.

  340. So we went down,

  341. they said,

  342. do you want to stay for barbecue?

  343. We stayed for barbecue

  344. in the evening.

  345. Mandy shared with his wife,

  346. she said,

  347. Ian's not going to work again.

  348. And it's just horrendous.

  349. And as Mandy got up

  350. to take our children

  351. back to bed

  352. at the campsite,

  353. Mandy whispered to me

  354. and said,

  355. I really sense you need

  356. to pray with Ian.

  357. I knew Ian for years.

  358. I wasn't a minister

  359. at that point.

  360. But I'd known Ian for years

  361. and I thought,

  362. oh Lord,

  363. is he just going to tell me

  364. where to go?

  365. This bloke is in a vulnerable position.

  366. He is desperate,

  367. but I don't know.

  368. Anyway,

  369. here you are.

  370. Talk about faith

  371. and we're talking about

  372. stepping into faith.

  373. I got up to leave.

  374. Confession time, people.

  375. I got up to leave,

  376. said Ian,

  377. I'll see you.

  378. When I felt a physical hand

  379. in my chest,

  380. a physical hand in my chest,

  381. I turned to Ian and I said,

  382. Ian,

  383. do you mind if I pray with you?

  384. And he said,

  385. I've been sat here all evening

  386. hoping that you would.

  387. It wasn't a great prayer.

  388. It was Holy Spirit,

  389. would you come

  390. and would you heal Ian?

  391. Would you heal him, Lord?

  392. Amen.

  393. That was it.

  394. No great flowery language.

  395. No waving of hands.

  396. Just a simple prayer.

  397. We arrived back.

  398. It was the days,

  399. you can tell how long ago,

  400. it was before mobile phones

  401. or nearer banks.

  402. We got back to a message

  403. on our answer machine at home

  404. with his wife,

  405. literally screaming down the phone,

  406. saying,

  407. phone me,

  408. phone me,

  409. we're at home.

  410. Now initially,

  411. I thought,

  412. there you are, Mandy.

  413. We got it wrong.

  414. I should never have done that.

  415. Look at that.

  416. That's really tipped him

  417. over the edge,

  418. hasn't it?

  419. What have we done?

  420. What the Lord did

  421. was healed him that night.

  422. She said,

  423. he slept through the night,

  424. no night terrors,

  425. and woke up

  426. totally renewed

  427. and revived.

  428. He was back at work

  429. three weeks later.

  430. Opportunity or challenge.

  431. This is where the gospel

  432. comes real for us today.

  433. You see,

  434. I think we are in a place

  435. of open expectation,

  436. of faithful discipleship,

  437. of being ready

  438. for the opportunities

  439. to witness

  440. when things happen.

  441. I was on my way

  442. to the temple when.

  443. I was on my way

  444. to the church when.

  445. I was on my way

  446. to breakfast when.

  447. I was on my way

  448. to work when.

  449. I was on my way

  450. on holiday when.

  451. I was at work when.

  452. I was welcoming

  453. at church when.

  454. Opportunities.

  455. The Lord doesn't limit

  456. our opportunities

  457. at all

  458. in the presence of God.

  459. Peter and John

  460. enter the temple

  461. with the man

  462. who has just

  463. discovered

  464. this new freedom.

  465. And they don't have

  466. to shout

  467. and say anything

  468. themselves about it

  469. because the man

  470. does it for them.

  471. Look at what

  472. God has done.

  473. We don't have to shout.

  474. We don't have to have

  475. our pictures in front

  476. of the paper

  477. handing over certificates.

  478. God does it

  479. through the people

  480. that we have changed.

  481. Maybe you yourself

  482. are one of those people

  483. who are here today

  484. as I am

  485. because somebody

  486. took boldness

  487. and courageous

  488. to speak truth

  489. into my life

  490. and bring me

  491. to a point

  492. where I've moved

  493. into a living

  494. relationship

  495. with Jesus.

  496. Jesus.

  497. When all the people

  498. saw him walking

  499. and praising God

  500. they recognised him

  501. as the same man

  502. who used to sit

  503. begging in the temple

  504. called the beautiful

  505. the gate called beautiful

  506. and they were filled

  507. with wonder and amazement

  508. at what had happened

  509. to him.

  510. They were hungry

  511. to know.

  512. If we do

  513. the business people

  514. other people

  515. get hungry

  516. to know

  517. what this is about.

  518. How did that happen?

  519. My friend Ian

  520. went on

  521. left the job

  522. that he was doing

  523. in the police force

  524. and went on

  525. to share his testimony

  526. with lots of young people

  527. as a youth worker

  528. and I'm sure

  529. he's transformed

  530. lots and lots of lives

  531. through his story

  532. and his testimony.

  533. Opportunity.

  534. And Peter and John

  535. tell them

  536. and they make

  537. even more hungry

  538. for knowledge.

  539. I sense people

  540. we're in a period

  541. of opportunity.

  542. I really want you

  543. to be encouraged

  544. this morning

  545. that we are

  546. in a time

  547. of opportunity

  548. to share our faith.

  549. People are open.

  550. Believe you me

  551. people are really

  552. open and searching

  553. and they want to know

  554. but will we give them

  555. what they want?

  556. Will we give them

  557. what they're searching for?

  558. And do we know

  559. the gifts

  560. that we've been given?

  561. Opportunities.

  562. I sense we need

  563. to increase

  564. that trust.

  565. and maybe this morning

  566. I sensed

  567. while I was writing

  568. this and walking

  569. up the hill

  570. for maybe

  571. some

  572. who said

  573. yeah I know

  574. all these gifts

  575. but I just need

  576. to step in.

  577. I just need

  578. to make that jump.

  579. Lord give me

  580. a bit more boldness

  581. and courageousness

  582. to step in

  583. and do the things

  584. and use the gifts.

  585. Ask

  586. for the gifts

  587. gifts

  588. because they're

  589. freely given

  590. for you to use

  591. this week

  592. and in the week

  593. to come.

  594. Maybe we all

  595. need to trust

  596. and jump

  597. into the Father's

  598. arms more and more.

  599. Shall we pray?

  600. Lord just thank you

  601. for your message

  602. and scripture

  603. this morning

  604. and I pray Lord

  605. in the situations

  606. and the opportunities

  607. that we meet

  608. that we would jump

  609. and trust

  610. and be with you

  611. in whatever

  612. our new adventure is

  613. in Jesus name.

  614. Amen.
