  1. I'll be honest, family.

  2. This week's been a bit of a ride.

  3. We're like T-1 now.

  4. And as I was preparing this,

  5. the hardest thing was,

  6. am I even going to be here

  7. to be able to share it?

  8. And if not, then who can I drop this on

  9. with like two hours notice?

  10. So I texted Aaron late last night.

  11. I said, hey,

  12. if you get a text from me

  13. in the middle of the night,

  14. you're preaching.

  15. You're up.

  16. But thankfully, I'm here.

  17. Just so many voices.

  18. So many things going on.

  19. And this ties into

  20. what I'm going to be sharing about today.

  21. But thanks, Sigmund, actually.

  22. You grabbed me this morning

  23. and you reminded me

  24. what I talked about last week,

  25. which is love, right?

  26. Put your hand.

  27. Last week, I talked about

  28. we must go out of our way

  29. to love people around us,

  30. especially the people in here

  31. and also, of course,

  32. the people outside.

  33. Put your hand up

  34. if you were a recipient of love this week.

  35. Have a think back to this week

  36. now that you've had.

  37. Who really felt as though

  38. they've received love

  39. from someone in this church family

  40. this week?

  41. Come on.

  42. Homework time.

  43. Okay.

  44. Let's go the other way

  45. at risk of being

  46. a little bit prideful here.

  47. Who in this congregation

  48. felt as though

  49. you went out of your way

  50. to show love to someone else?

  51. Don't be shy.

  52. You can do this.

  53. You can show it.

  54. You can show it.

  55. Excellent.

  56. Good, good, good.

  57. That's good.

  58. Sigmund, I'm going to pick on you.

  59. Tell us what you did.

  60. How did you show love?

  61. How did you show love

  62. and go out of your way?

  63. and go out of your way?

  64. Did Alex just force you

  65. to put your hand up?

  66. Tell us one thing.

  67. Oh.

  68. You and God three having some bromance,

  69. showing love to each other by giving each other time.

  70. By giving each other time and attention.

  71. That's huge.

  72. That's not something that we even take for granted in Hong Kong, right?

  73. To be able to give each other time,

  74. probably the most valuable thing that we can give.

  75. Thank you.

  76. Thank you for that.

  77. And as I'm talking about how we love,

  78. really, that's what Jesus' message is.

  79. That's what God's message is.

  80. Love me.

  81. Love me with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.

  82. Love me with everything that you've got.

  83. Love your neighbor as yourself.

  84. Why?

  85. Because actually, if you love me, you will be fully satisfied.

  86. But if you don't love me,

  87. if you love the other things of this world,

  88. then actually those things, the things that you love,

  89. the things that you end up worshiping

  90. that are not of me,

  91. is dangerous because they actually,

  92. they're the things that consume you.

  93. They're the things that corrupt you.

  94. They're the things that break your heart.

  95. So don't love those things.

  96. Silas and I spent our teen years in love with Arsenal.

  97. And every weekend, every Saturday afternoon,

  98. every Sunday, our hearts would be broken

  99. and we'd be questioning our purpose in life,

  100. our meaning in life,

  101. because they would disappoint.

  102. They would break our hearts.

  103. The reason why God says, love me,

  104. is because I'm the only one that doesn't corrupt you.

  105. I'm the only one that doesn't disappoint you.

  106. I'm the only one that won't let you down.

  107. And you might say, well, actually,

  108. I don't even know really what I worship.

  109. And there was a quote that I shared a couple of weeks ago

  110. by a writer, a professor called David Foster Wallace,

  111. not a Christian, not a Christian actually.

  112. And he was saying, hey, we all worship something.

  113. We all worship something.

  114. Even the atheists worship something.

  115. Let me read you the quote again.

  116. There is actually no such thing as atheism.

  117. There is no such thing as not worshiping.

  118. Everybody worships.

  119. The only choice we get is what we worship.

  120. And most of the things we worship end up eating you alive.

  121. If you worship money and things,

  122. if they are where you tap real meaning in life,

  123. then you will never have enough.

  124. Never feel you have enough.

  125. It's the truth.

  126. Worship your body and beauty and sexual allure,

  127. and you will always feel ugly.

  128. And when time and age start showing,

  129. you will die a million deaths before they finally grieve you.

  130. On one level, we all know this stuff already.

  131. It's been codified as myths, proverbs, cliches, epigrams, parables,

  132. the skeleton of every great story.

  133. The whole trick is to keep the truth up front in your daily consciousness.

  134. Sadly, this guy who wrote this, David Foster Wallace, non-Christian,

  135. but he actually passed away at the young age of 46 in Claremont, actually.

  136. He took his own life.

  137. We all have this hunger,

  138. this yearning that we need to worship something.

  139. Tribes that have nothing to do with each other,

  140. in the history of mankind,

  141. we'll know there's something that's beyond them.

  142. There's a higher power that we need to connect with.

  143. We all have that.

  144. Ecclesiastes 3 is,

  145. he's planted eternity into the heart of man.

  146. So God says, love me.

  147. Worship me.

  148. If not, everything else that you worship will corrupt you,

  149. will consume you,

  150. will destroy you,

  151. and you will die a million deaths.

  152. And we move on now,

  153. and John kind of here moves into a little bit of a,

  154. something else.

  155. He talks about,

  156. the title of this part was actually,

  157. Test the Spirits,

  158. because what he recognizes is,

  159. in that church at that time,

  160. there were tons of voices.

  161. Tons of voices about the things that you worship,

  162. things that you follow.

  163. Now, we all worship something,

  164. and we all follow something.

  165. John Mark Comer was the one that said,

  166. actually,

  167. we all orient our lives around something.

  168. If an alien was to drop into this world,

  169. and to shadow you for a week,

  170. they would be able to analyze,

  171. and evaluate,

  172. and go,

  173. what does this person orient their lives around?

  174. Have a think.

  175. I won't pick on you,

  176. but if you have a look at the people of Hong Kong,

  177. you have a look at the people of the city,

  178. you have a look at the people,

  179. even in this space right now,

  180. if someone was to sit and just go,

  181. actually,

  182. what do they orient their lives around?

  183. What do you orient your life around?

  184. What would that be?

  185. See, from the way,

  186. let's say I see how people use their time,

  187. let's say my beloved Cuban right here,

  188. I know that God is a big part of his life.

  189. In fact,

  190. so much that he gave his life to come and serve,

  191. to reach young people.

  192. But I also know BJJ is a big part of his life,

  193. right?

  194. And it's something that you love,

  195. and so you orient your life around that.

  196. There'll be times I'm like,

  197. hey, Cuban,

  198. want to hang out?

  199. No, I can't.

  200. I'm not BJJ.

  201. Because that's just something that he loves.

  202. What's the thing that you spend your time with?

  203. Because that's the thing that you love.

  204. That's the thing you're orienting your life around.

  205. And John Mark Holmes was going to say,

  206. we all follow something.

  207. We all orient our lives around something.

  208. God is saying,

  209. Jesus is saying,

  210. don't just listen to my teaching.

  211. Don't just identify with me as a Christian.

  212. Follow me.

  213. Orient your whole life around me.

  214. Come and be with me.

  215. And I am with you.

  216. God with us.

  217. The question is,

  218. how do we know?

  219. How do we know which things to follow?

  220. How do we know through which things to believe?

  221. And this is where I think what John is doing here

  222. as he moves into this next passage.

  223. So we're going to read the Word of God.

  224. It's only six verses.

  225. So can I invite us to stand for the Word of the Lord?

  226. Again, for those of you new

  227. and you're begritting that I've got you

  228. a few of your beanbag again,

  229. we just believe that the Word of the Lord is sacred.

  230. It's powerful.

  231. It's holy.

  232. And sometimes I treat it for granted.

  233. And this is just a sign for us to remind ourselves

  234. that actually God is here.

  235. God is real.

  236. And he's speaking.

  237. If we would listen.

  238. 1 John 4, verse 1 to 6.

    1 John 4:1–6

  239. Let's read it together, if you can.

  240. For those who can see the screens, read loud.

  241. Verse 1.

  242. Beloved, do not believe every spirit,

  243. but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.

  244. For many false prophets have gone out into the world.

  245. By this you know the Spirit of God.

  246. Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ

  247. has come in the flesh is from God.

  248. And every spirit that does not confess Jesus

  249. is not from God.

  250. This is the Spirit of the Antichrist,

  251. which you heard was coming

  252. and now is in the world already.

  253. Little children, you are from God

  254. and have overcome them.

  255. For he who is in you is greater

  256. than he who is in the world.

  257. They are from the world.

  258. Therefore, they speak from the world

  259. and the world listens to them.

  260. We are from God.

  261. Whoever knows God listens to us.

  262. Whoever is not from God does not listen to us.

  263. By this we know the Spirit of truth

  264. and the Spirit of error.

  265. This is the Word of the Lord.

  266. Take a seat.

  267. Let's just pray.

  268. Lord, we know this is your Word.

  269. We cling on, we hang on to every word that you say.

  270. Holy Spirit, would you guide us

  271. your Spirit of truth.

  272. May you guide us.

  273. May we not follow the Spirit of error.

  274. We're here for you.

  275. Even with all the excitement

  276. and friends and family

  277. and not just being the weekend

  278. that we can gather.

  279. But Lord, most importantly,

  280. you are here.

  281. So would you speak to us?

  282. In your name we pray.

  283. Amen.

  284. So my point today is

  285. there are contending voices

  286. everywhere.

  287. Everywhere.

  288. In your workplace,

  289. there are bosses

  290. who tell you certain things

  291. about how they think

  292. that you should live.

  293. As you walk down the MTR

  294. and you see all the adverts,

  295. you see all these things

  296. that tell you

  297. what your life should be like,

  298. what everyone else's life is like,

  299. even though that is completely

  300. photoshopped

  301. and manufactured,

  302. yet there are voices

  303. everywhere telling you.

  304. And there are voices

  305. in our own minds.

  306. Come from maybe

  307. our family backgrounds.

  308. We talked about this

  309. a couple of weeks ago.

  310. The way we grew up,

  311. the voices that we heard

  312. around there affect,

  313. affect our mindset,

  314. affects the way we live.

  315. What are the voices

  316. that you've got

  317. going on in your mind?

  318. John here tells the church,

  319. he says,

  320. Beloved,

  321. do not believe every spirit,

  322. but test the spirits

  323. to see whether they are

  324. from God.

  325. There are false prophets,

  326. there are false truths.

  327. Test every spirit.

  328. That tells me

  329. there are spirits around,

  330. but we've got to figure out

  331. how to test,

  332. how to know

  333. what is what.

  334. In verse 3,

  335. it says this,

  336. this is the spirit

  337. of the Antichrist,

  338. which you heard was coming

  339. and now is in the world already.

  340. And a couple of weeks ago

  341. for Chinese New Year,

  342. we shared about the Antichrist

  343. a little bit,

  344. but really it sounds

  345. very serious,

  346. it sounds like this devil

  347. with horns and where

  348. the pitchfork,

  349. but actually,

  350. at least for the Chinese culture,

  351. we talked about face,

  352. the idol of face,

  353. the spirit of just

  354. not wanting,

  355. avoiding shame.

  356. And then we talked

  357. about fortune,

  358. just craving health,

  359. craving wealth.

  360. Those are some

  361. of the idols of the day.

  362. What about some

  363. of the other ones

  364. that we have?

  365. What are some

  366. of the other spirits

  367. that are happening?

  368. Maybe one that really

  369. sends shivers down my spine,

  370. Ephesians 2,

  371. and you were dead

  372. in the trespasses

  373. and sins in which

  374. you once walked,

  375. following the course

  376. of this world,

  377. following the prince

  378. of the power of the air,

  379. the spirit that is now

  380. at work in the sons

  381. of disobedience.

  382. There is a,

  383. without being extra

  384. mystical here,

  385. there is,

  386. there are powers

  387. that are at work.

  388. Of course,

  389. Ephesians 6.12

  390. talks about that,

  391. that we're not fighting

  392. against flesh and blood.

  393. There's a realm

  394. that we don't know about

  395. and all of these

  396. are trying to do one thing.

  397. What is that one thing

  398. that they're trying to do?

  399. Pull us away from God.

  400. Pull us away from God.

  401. Anything but God.

  402. And John's here

  403. telling his church,

  404. test the spirits.

  405. There are so many voices

  406. that you've got around

  407. in your minds,

  408. in your society,

  409. in your culture.

  410. You've got to learn

  411. to test them.

  412. You've got to learn

  413. to know which ones

  414. are right.

  415. I think about the,

  416. what's the spirit

  417. that we have here

  418. in this city?

  419. Any ideas?

  420. What are some

  421. of the spirits?

  422. What are some of the

  423. things that really

  424. govern the way

  425. people live here?

  426. I'll tell you one.

  427. Busy.

  428. The spirit of busy.

  429. I mean,

  430. again,

  431. when I'm talking

  432. about a demon

  433. with horns here,

  434. we're talking about

  435. nearly every person

  436. we meet,

  437. everywhere we go

  438. in this city,

  439. you ask how you're doing,

  440. you say,

  441. I'm good,

  442. I'm busy.

  443. I'm busy.

  444. I think

  445. Dallas Willard

  446. was the one

  447. that said,

  448. actually,

  449. busyness,

  450. hurrying,

  451. is the greatest

  452. enemy of spirituality.

  453. Who's busy here?

  454. You can confess.

  455. You're busy.

  456. Of course,

  457. in Hong Kong,

  458. you kind of define busy.

  459. Like,

  460. growing up in the UK,

  461. busy was maybe

  462. having seven things

  463. a week.

  464. Like,

  465. for meetings,

  466. for busy in Hong Kong

  467. is seven things

  468. a day or more.

  469. It's kind of busy.

  470. Right?

  471. When we were

  472. in California

  473. in January,

  474. just going anywhere,

  475. you could only do

  476. two,

  477. three things a day

  478. because everything

  479. takes an hour drive

  480. and then there's

  481. LA traffic,

  482. so that means

  483. it's two hours.

  484. And so you can only

  485. really do two

  486. or three things a day.

  487. I call myself

  488. doing 11 things

  489. one day

  490. because I can zip around

  491. Jordan,

  492. Admiralty,

  493. Sunshine Pole,

  494. Monk Kong,

  495. just keep going.

  496. The spirit of busy.

  497. There's a story

  498. I wanted to read you

  499. and this is

  500. an old fable

  501. that tells of

  502. three apprentices

  503. who were devils

  504. to come and finish

  505. their apprenticeship

  506. on earth

  507. and they were

  508. talking to Satan,

  509. the chief of the devils

  510. about their plans

  511. to tempt and ruin men,

  512. to turn men away

  513. from God.

  514. The first one said this,

  515. I'll tell them

  516. there is no God.

  517. That'll work.

  518. Satan said,

  519. that will not delude them

  520. for many,

  521. they know there is a God.

  522. The second one said,

  523. oh,

  524. in that case,

  525. then I will tell them

  526. there is no hell.

  527. Satan answered,

  528. you will deceive

  529. no one that way.

  530. Men know,

  531. even now,

  532. that there is a hell

  533. for sin.

  534. There is a cost

  535. to pay

  536. for sin.

  537. The third said,

  538. well,

  539. you know what then?

  540. I will tell men

  541. that there is no hurry,

  542. that there is no urgency,

  543. that they can get on

  544. with their busy lives

  545. to do all the things

  546. that they want to do

  547. in this world

  548. and that the matters

  549. of the kingdom of heaven,

  550. the things of God,

  551. are no hurry,

  552. no priority,

  553. no urgency.

  554. They can just be busy

  555. with their own lives.

  556. then Satan said,

  557. you will ruin them

  558. by the thousands.

  559. The most dangerous

  560. of all delusions

  561. is that there is plenty

  562. of time

  563. to do a million

  564. other things.

  565. The spirit of busy,

  566. we keep ourselves

  567. busy that way.

  568. And of course,

  569. another one is the busy,

  570. the spirit of money.

  571. The spirit of money

  572. that seems to govern

  573. the city.

  574. Everything that we do

  575. has something to do

  576. with money.

  577. We talked about

  578. the Chinese culture

  579. and honor and shame.

  580. What does that lead into?

  581. It leads to people

  582. wanting more money

  583. so that they can

  584. have more honor.

  585. If they don't have

  586. enough money,

  587. then it's more shame.

  588. Maybe on a similar line

  589. to that parable there,

  590. one of my favorite books

  591. is by C.S. Lewis

  592. called Screwtape Letters.

  593. Who's read

  594. the Screwtape Letters before?

  595. Fascinating book.

  596. It's about Screwtape,

  597. who's a very senior demon,

  598. and he's training

  599. his nephew, Wormwood.

  600. And he's training

  601. his nephew

  602. to pull people

  603. away from God.

  604. That's what he's doing.

  605. And they have

  606. these fascinating conversations.

  607. It's satirical,

  608. but it's actually

  609. theological as well.

  610. It's a fascinating read

  611. if you wanted to read it.

  612. And Screwtape talks about

  613. how money is the thing.

  614. And he says this,

  615. that I think,

  616. when it comes to

  617. the spirit of money,

  618. he says this,

  619. prosperity knits a man

  620. to the world.

  621. He feels that he is

  622. finding his place in it

  623. while really

  624. it is finding its place

  625. in him.

  626. Whoa.

  627. The spirit of money.

  628. The spirit of money

  629. where actually it's,

  630. that's what,

  631. that's what,

  632. that's what,

  633. God says,

  634. don't look at money.

  635. Look at me.

  636. You can't serve both

  637. because money will

  638. ultimately corrupt you.

  639. It will consume you.

  640. And you think you've got

  641. a hold on it,

  642. but actually it's got

  643. a hold on you.

  644. These are the things

  645. that we face

  646. in this world.

  647. And of course,

  648. there's another one

  649. which is just religion.

  650. Maybe Keller talks

  651. about this.

  652. 30 years ago,

  653. if you ask people,

  654. what's the enemy

  655. to world peace,

  656. people would probably say

  657. politics and communism

  658. capitalism and capitalism.

  659. But now it's,

  660. actually it's

  661. religious diversity.

  662. People think,

  663. actually it's religion

  664. that causes wars,

  665. that causes all these problems.

  666. This religious diversity

  667. that we have,

  668. that we live in a post-truth culture

  669. where actually,

  670. oh,

  671. your truth is good,

  672. you can stick to yours

  673. and you can stick to yours

  674. and all of us

  675. can just live in harmony

  676. in some way,

  677. but it doesn't happen that way.

  678. John Stott was the one

  679. who said,

  680. religious diversity

  681. is not really

  682. just that.

  683. There is so much more to it.

  684. There is a spiritual realm

  685. to it.

  686. All of it.

  687. All of the spirits

  688. do one thing,

  689. try and pull you away

  690. from God.

  691. All these contending voices

  692. that go on in society,

  693. even good ones,

  694. they seek to pull you away

  695. from God.

  696. And John says,

  697. test,

  698. test these spirits.

  699. Just the context here

  700. as he's writing this

  701. in 1 John.

  702. It's in the Roman culture

  703. where actually,

  704. it was a polytheistic culture.

  705. What does that mean?

  706. That means they would

  707. tolerate all the gods.

  708. The Roman culture

  709. would be like,

  710. hey,

  711. you believe this,

  712. that's cool,

  713. you believe this god of fertility,

  714. you believe this god of fertility.

  715. Everyone can believe

  716. everything

  717. and that's okay.

  718. Do you know why

  719. they did that?

  720. Why did the Romans

  721. let them do that?

  722. It's because when you let people

  723. just have their own religions,

  724. it's actually the easiest way

  725. and the best way

  726. to control

  727. a whole group

  728. of people.

  729. Back to the screw tape.

  730. A quote,

  731. a book.

  732. A screw tape says this,

  733. a moderated religion

  734. is as good for us

  735. as no religion at all

  736. and more amusing.

  737. If the Romans

  738. could just let everyone

  739. worship their own things

  740. and get busy

  741. with their own things,

  742. then they will live

  743. peaceably within this empire

  744. and not cause any trouble

  745. and the Romans

  746. would remain in control.

  747. So they encouraged

  748. all these religions.

  749. So then you have

  750. a gathering like this,

  751. people who are following

  752. the way

  753. and they wander in

  754. and they wander in

  755. and some of them

  756. start saying,

  757. oh actually,

  758. oh I have this God as well,

  759. treating them as Pokemon cards

  760. and saying,

  761. oh this Jesus one is good,

  762. I'd like to collect

  763. this Jesus one.

  764. This Jesus card

  765. seems powerful

  766. but just in case,

  767. I've got the other cards

  768. that I need as well.

  769. And so that's what was

  770. happening within the church

  771. and then John's saying,

  772. no, you've got to test

  773. the spirit

  774. because there is only,

  775. there is only one.

  776. I'm reminded of this picture here.

  777. Has anyone seen this before?

  778. This is a picture of an idea

  779. that actually I think

  780. came from Indian culture

  781. which was one that said,

  782. hey you can worship

  783. all these other gods

  784. and actually all these

  785. other gods lead

  786. to the same thing.

  787. Everyone's just giving

  788. a different aspect

  789. of reality,

  790. of divinity.

  791. They just don't see

  792. the whole picture.

  793. So that's what they're saying.

  794. So what it says is

  795. a few blind men

  796. analyzing an elephant

  797. and touching different places

  798. and he's got a tail

  799. and he's going,

  800. okay, this being is,

  801. it's actually just a rope.

  802. This one's right here

  803. and it says,

  804. it's a wall.

  805. This one is,

  806. oh, it's a fan.

  807. It's a spear.

  808. It's a snake.

  809. It's a tree.

  810. And basically the premise is,

  811. hey, you can believe

  812. whatever you want.

  813. You've just got one side

  814. of the truth

  815. and that's okay.

  816. If we combine it all together,

  817. then we'll have the truth.

  818. We are all heading

  819. to the same place

  820. is what all the religions say.

  821. And then Christianity

  822. comes on the scene

  823. and John writes here

  824. in the scene saying,

  825. no, that is not the case.

  826. There is only one.

  827. Of course,

  828. the problem with this,

  829. the problem with this picture,

  830. which seems quite respectful,

  831. which seems quite tolerant,

  832. you're also assuming

  833. actually here

  834. that you're standing

  835. outside of this picture

  836. and that you can see everything.

  837. So there's an absolute pride

  838. that's implied

  839. in this analogy

  840. that there is someone

  841. sat here going,

  842. hey, you guys,

  843. you're all blind

  844. and you're actually

  845. all looking an elephant

  846. and you don't see clearly,

  847. but you're assuming

  848. that you do.

  849. So this claim in itself

  850. is a prideful,

  851. ignorant one of sorts.

  852. So this doesn't work.

  853. And John's saying,

  854. test the spirits.

  855. There's only one.

  856. I was talking to a friend

  857. the other day

  858. at the hospital

  859. and he was asking this question.

  860. How do we know?

  861. How do we know

  862. that Christianity is the only one?

  863. I've got some good friends

  864. who are maybe Muslims

  865. and Hindus

  866. and the atheists

  867. and the Buddhists.

  868. How do we know

  869. that Christianity

  870. is the one?

  871. How do we test

  872. all these spirits?

  873. How do we discern

  874. which is the actual truth?

  875. That's why we're here.

  876. If you're here going,

  877. actually,

  878. I'm okay with a bit

  879. of all these different ones

  880. as well,

  881. then I'm here to lovingly,

  882. respectfully,

  883. politely say,

  884. no, there's only one.

  885. There's only one.

  886. Well, yeah,

  887. unfortunately,

  888. if you walk in here

  889. and you want to

  890. meet the Lord,

  891. you're going to let

  892. all the other Pokemon cards go.

  893. You do not catch them all.

  894. There is only one to catch.

  895. There is only one.

  896. The question there

  897. is, okay, James,

  898. what's the answer to that?

  899. How do I know

  900. which the one is?

  901. And that is really

  902. the question that we all have.

  903. How do I know Christianity

  904. is the only one?

  905. How do I know it?

  906. And actually,

  907. John here really says

  908. one key phrase

  909. that I'm going to finish on here,

  910. which is,

  911. Jesus,

  912. you test by this.

  913. Jesus has come

  914. in the flesh from God.

  915. That is the statement

  916. if I just keep going back

  917. to the verse.

  918. I've completely ruined

  919. my order now.

  920. And every spirit

  921. that does not confess

  922. that Jesus is not from God.

  923. So basically,

  924. what it's saying here

  925. is it has to be

  926. this is it.

  927. Every other spirit

  928. that isn't true

  929. will not confess

  930. that Jesus is not from God.

  931. In fact,

  932. I've left the slide two here.

  933. Verse two

  934. is the one that says

  935. that's the key phrase here

  936. that it is all about

  937. this sentence

  938. right here.

  939. Jesus has come

  940. in the flesh

  941. and is from God.

  942. As you test and see

  943. what is true

  944. and what is not,

  945. this is the one.

  946. Now,

  947. this is the one

  948. where a lot of apologists go,

  949. this is crazy.

  950. You're sat here

  951. because you believe

  952. that there was a Jewish man

  953. 2,000 years ago

  954. who came to this earth

  955. and declared

  956. that he himself

  957. was God.

  958. That's what you believe.

  959. Sat here in 2024

  960. in Adbalty,

  961. in Adbalty Center,

  962. Tower 2,

  963. 14th floor,

  964. you believe

  965. that there was a Jewish man

  966. 2,000 years ago

  967. who turned out

  968. who was born in Bethlehem

  969. who declared

  970. that he was the son of God,

  971. died for the sins of many

  972. and then came back to life.

  973. That's what you're proclaiming here.

  974. You're proclaiming here

  975. a couple of things.

  976. You're proclaiming here

  977. that Jesus is from God.

  978. From God.

  979. See,

  980. all these other religions

  981. were founded by men.

  982. They were founded

  983. by different people.

  984. We have a religion

  985. that separates it

  986. because our religion

  987. was founded by God himself.

  988. That's the claim.

  989. That's the claim.

  990. That's what separates it apart.

  991. As you discern,

  992. now we're going to meet people

  993. who,

  994. especially in this new age,

  995. who are open

  996. to all kinds of ideas.

  997. We're in the new age

  998. where we can accept everything

  999. and we can tolerate everything.

  1000. We must learn

  1001. to test the spirit

  1002. and go,

  1003. actually,

1004. does this one confess this?

1005. Jesus has come in the flesh

  1006. and is from God.

1007. That he was the founder

  1008. of our religion.

  1009. You see,

  1010. in that time,

  1011. the Gnostics

  1012. were the ones

  1013. who believed

  1014. in spirit realm

  1015. and flesh realm.

  1016. They were separate.

1017. You can do whatever you wanted

  1018. in the flesh realm

  1019. and it wouldn't affect

  1020. your spiritual realm

  1021. at all.

  1022. And actually,

  1023. they actually looked

  1024. with disgust

  1025. on the flesh realm.

  1026. It's dirty.

  1027. It's nothing compared

1028. to what they will have

  1029. in the future

  1030. so they can do

  1031. whatever they want.

  1032. Christianity is unique

  1033. because Christianity is saying

  1034. this religion was founded

  1035. from God

  1036. and that this God

  1037. chose to come

  1038. and take on

  1039. man,

  1040. take on flesh.

  1041. The word became flesh.

  1042. God incarnate.

  1043. Why?

  1044. Because it recognized

  1045. that we could not

  1046. save ourselves.

  1047. Jesus recognized

  1048. that we could not

  1049. save ourselves,

1050. that he had to come

  1051. and identify with us

1052. so that then he could

  1053. represent us

1054. so that then he could

  1055. save us.

  1056. Inherent to Christianity

  1057. and unique to Christianity

  1058. is the issue

  1059. that you cannot

  1060. save yourself.

  1061. You cannot save yourself.

  1062. Every other religion

  1063. says you can do

  1064. these things.

1065. If you do these things

  1066. well,

  1067. if you got this,

1068. then you get to heaven.

  1069. Christianity is the only

  1070. one that offers

  1071. the morally

  1072. satisfactory solution

  1073. that we are sinners,

  1074. that we cannot

  1075. save ourselves

  1076. because we created

  1077. the problem

  1078. in ourselves

  1079. and we needed

  1080. outside help

  1081. and that's why

  1082. Jesus has come

  1083. in the flesh

  1084. from God.

  1085. The question then

  1086. becomes,

  1087. do you believe this?

  1088. Do you believe this?

1089. And you can test this,

  1090. whether you believe this,

  1091. in the way

1092. you deal with your life.

  1093. When you're waiting

  1094. for that job

  1095. offer to come,

  1096. when you're worrying

  1097. about your bank account,

  1098. when you're worrying

  1099. about all your future,

  1100. you can test

  1101. to see if this

  1102. is really the thing

  1103. that you believe

  1104. because if you don't

  1105. actually believe this,

  1106. then you'll start

  1107. worrying about

  1108. all the other things

  1109. because you're,

  1110. actually,

  1111. I need to spend

  1112. myself,

  1113. I need to scrap

  1114. as much money

  1115. as I can

  1116. because I don't

  1117. truly believe

  1118. that Jesus has

  1119. come in the flesh

  1120. and is from God,

1121. that he loved me enough

  1122. that he would leave

  1123. his identity in heaven

  1124. and he would come

  1125. and save me

  1126. and he gave up

  1127. his life for me.

  1128. I don't know

  1129. if we truly believe

  1130. that,

  1131. do you get me?

  1132. If we truly believe

  1133. that,

  1134. we wouldn't worry

1135. about all the other things.

  1136. Jesus cared about us

  1137. enough that he would

  1138. travel the ultimate

  1139. distance to come

  1140. to save us.

  1141. That's the thing

  1142. that's unique

  1143. about Christianity

  1144. and the main thing

  1145. here that is again

  1146. unique to Christianity

1147. is the issue of grace.

  1148. Have a think

  1149. just for a second.

1150. I want to pause here.

1151. We hear the word grace.

1152. We sing about the word grace.

1153. What does the word grace

  1154. mean to you?

  1155. 60 seconds.

1156. Turn this to the person

  1157. next to you.

1158. What does the word grace

  1159. mean to you?

  1160. When you think about

  1161. the word grace,

  1162. what does it mean?

  1163. Doesn't have to be

  1164. a right answer.

  1165. Just what is it

1166. that you think it means?

  1167. Go.

  1168. All right.

  1169. All right.

  1170. All right.

  1171. All right.

  1172. Super Bowl.

  1173. We're still home now.

  1174. All right.

  1175. All right.

  1176. All right.

  1177. All right.

  1178. All right.

  1179. All right.

  1180. All right.

  1181. All right.

  1182. All right.

  1183. All right.

  1184. All right.

  1185. All right.

  1186. All right.

  1187. All right.

  1188. All right.

  1189. All right.

  1190. All right.

  1191. All right.

  1192. All right.

  1193. Yeah.

  1194. Yeah.

  1195. Wow.

  1196. Yeah.

1197. Just to try and paraphrase just a sermon, if you summarize the whole Bible, it's the word

1198. grace and that it transforms.

1199. It's nothing to do with your works, but it's just something that you receive.

  1200. Incredible.

  1201. What else is there?

1202. What else have we got over there?

1203. Let's go over to the sofa side.

  1204. Darren.

  1205. Darren.

  1206. Darren.

  1207. Undeserved love.

  1208. Yeah.

1209. So you don't deserve it.

  1210. It's absolutely more.

  1211. Absolutely more.

1212. I don't know if I have spent enough time mulling over this word grace.

  1213. I don't know if you have.

1214. Sometimes I think I sit here, we sit here and we're like, I deserve to be here.

  1215. I'm a good person.

  1216. I'm doing enough.

1217. And to sit here and go, no, really.

  1218. I'm a rebel.

  1219. I'm a rebel.

  1220. I'm a rebel.

  1221. I didn't deserve to be here.

1222. But now this master gave his son to die for me.

1223. And now I get to be called his son.

  1224. What?

  1225. That's grace.

  1226. It's undeserved.

  1227. It's generous.

  1228. Grace.

1229. Grace, what does your name mean to you?

  1230. Take care.

  1231. Take care.

  1232. Take care.

  1233. Take care.

  1234. Take care.

  1235. Take care.

  1236. Take care.

  1237. Take care.

  1238. Take care.

  1239. Take care.

  1240. Take care.

  1241. Take care.

  1242. Take care.

  1243. Take care.

  1244. Take care.

  1245. Take care.

  1246. Take care.

  1247. Take care.

  1248. Take care.

  1249. Take care.

  1250. Take care.

  1251. Take care.

  1252. Take care.

  1253. Take care.

  1254. Take care.

  1255. Take care.

  1256. Take care.

  1257. Take care.

  1258. Thank you.

  1259. Thank you.

1260. Because we don't understand the word grace.

1261. And I think, I'll tell you, I think it even happens in our churches.

1262. It happens amongst our pastors.

1263. It happens where people just don't seem to understand it.

1264. Because if we got to grips of what grace actually meant, that we're all sat here.

1265. We don't just have to be there.

  1266. And yet we're here.

  1267. That's huge.

1268. It broke my heart yesterday.

1269. I was talking to someone in a church and they said there's a group of people who just, within the church, who everybody knows that they're just like in an elite group.

1270. Just like, you know, one of those exclusive groups that, you know, you've got to be a certain pedigree.

1271. You've got to be born in a certain hospital.

1272. You've got to have gone to a certain school.

1273. You've got to be in a certain occupation.

1274. And only then can you look and see, can you join that.

1275. I'm like, man, if there's anything more against the gospel, that we are all sinners.

1276. Like, we all fall short of the glory of God.

1277. That we didn't choose to be born here.

1278. You'd been born anywhere in the world, but he was born here and you were born here and you have what you have because of him.

1279. That you have the parents that you have because of him.

1280. That you get to sit here.

1281. You have the job that you have because of him.

1282. The spirit of pride exists.

1283. That's why we have to keep measuring it up.

1284. What's the spirit that is really at work in us?

1285. Because if we have this spirit and it can confess this, it changes the way we live.

1286. This sentence here feels very Christian-y.

1287. We've seen these words before.

1288. Jesus has come in the flesh from God.

1289. But if we truly grasp what it meant.

1290. That God looked at us and said, actually, these guys, these people are not going to be able to make it.

1291. So that he would send his son to come in the flesh.

  1292. The word became flesh.

1293. The light came into the darkness to save us.

1294. He came from God and he's going back to God.

1295. If we truly understood what this term meant, then I think I'm starting to get why John wrote this.

1296. This is how you measure.

1297. This is how you measure whether you're following the right spirit or not.

1298. If this is the name above all names.

1299. But the truth is this.

1300. Whether it's religion or whether it's just the worldly ideals.

1301. The thing that they want you to put your trust in.

1302. The thing we want to put our trust in is our own names.

  1303. Right?

  1304. You build yourself up.

1305. Get yourself to the point where you are recognized to do these things.

1306. That you have a certain level of achievement.

1307. Every other religion says you can be saved by your own name.

1308. Every other religion says, hey, you can get it done.

1309. Every worldly value says you must get it done.

1310. Christianity is the only one that says it is done.

1311. That the founder of this religion, this God that we serve, went to the cross for us and said,

  1312. it is finished.

1313. These people that cannot save themselves because I love them so much.

  1314. These rebels.

1315. These people that keep turning against me.

  1316. I died for them.

1317. Forgive them for they know not what they do.

1318. This is the only religion that does that.

  1319. I'll finish with this.

1320. And I want us to really think about this because we know this.

1321. We know that Jesus has come in the flesh.

1322. And yet, time and time again, we just let it overtake us sometimes.

1323. Well, James, I believe this, but how can I go back in?

1324. You know, the forces are so strong.

1325. And it's not even my colleagues.

  1326. It's my family.

1327. It's not even my family.

  1328. It's just the city.

  1329. It's my friends.

1330. It's just so hard to push against that spirit.

1331. And that's where the encouragement comes in.

  1332. He says, little children.

1333. And he's not rebuking in a way that isn't loving.

  1334. He's saying, my beloved.

  1335. Later, he carries on.

1336. Beloved, my dear children, you are from God and you have overcome that.

1337. For he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

1338. He who is in you is greater than he is in the world.

1339. He is the one on your team.

  1340. We joke about basketball.

1341. And I'm by no means the best player.

1342. In fact, one of the best players I've enjoyed playing with.

1343. Joe over there, I've enjoyed playing with him.

1344. I'll tell you something, Joe.

1345. Every time I go and run, I go to a basketball run with Joe, I am filled with confidence when I see that I've been picked to be on Joe's team.

1346. And I'm like, oh, yeah.

1347. You guys are going to get it now because I've got him.

  1348. And I have that.

1349. Do you have that with God?

1350. When you walk out into this world, do you go, man, I'm not scared of anything because I have God on my team.

1351. I have God on my side.

1352. All these are the spirits.

1353. All these are the values.

1354. All these are the contending voices.

1355. They don't matter because I have the one whose name is above every name.

1356. But I have God himself on my team.

1357. He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

1358. And I'll finish this with this Tim Keller quote.

1359. He says, think of it.

1360. If there is any other way, what was Jesus doing in God?

1361. What did he say to the Father?

1362. He said, is there no other way?

1363. Can this cup pass from me?

1364. Can I get out of this somehow?

1365. Is there no other way?

1366. The answer is the cup couldn't because there was no other way.

1367. Do you think if there was any other way, Jesus would have done it?

1368. If there was any other way, what in the world is Jesus doing that for?

1369. How do you explain the extreme lengths to which he went?

1370. You make absolute nonsense of what he did on the cross.

1371. Is there no other way?

  1372. No.

1373. And therefore, there is no other way.

  1374. Is there another way?

  1375. No.

1376. Jesus himself asked in the garden, God, is there any other way that we can save these people?

1377. Is there any other way we can show them grace without it costing us?

1378. Is there any other way that we can draw them close to us even though they keep running away, pushing back?

  1379. And God says, no.

1380. There is no other way.

1381. And therefore, there is no other name.

1382. There is no other name that saves.

1383. That he, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, born in the likelihood of men.

1384. And he humbled himself to the point of death, even death on the cross.

1385. Therefore, God now has exalted him to have the name above every name, so that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

  1386. Test every spirit.

1387. Shut down all the contending voices.

1388. There is only one way.

1389. There is only one name.

1390. And our founder, before he laid down his life, said, I am the way, the truth, and the life.

1391. No one will come to the Father except me.

  1392. I am sorry.

1393. That is an offensive message to everyone we meet, saying, you're right.

1394. There is only one way.

1395. Because there is no other founder of a religion who laid his life down for his people out of love, out of grace.

1396. So would we be filled with that grace for other people?

1397. May we be so hungry for the truth.

1398. May we test every spirit.

1399. Shut down any contending voice that does not confess that Jesus is the name above all names.

1400. Can I invite you just for a moment of quiet reflection now?

  1401. Holy Spirit, we ask,

1402. Are there any contending voices?

1403. Any spirits that we've allowed in our lives

1404. that are not of you?

  1405. Jesus, we confess.

  1406. That you are God.

1407. That you are the word that came flesh.

1408. That you are in the beginning.

1409. That in you is life.

  1410. That you are light.

1411. And that you are the word that came flesh and dwelt among us.

1412. And we have seen your glory.

1413. You came so that we would know the Father.

  1414. Amen.

  1415. Amen.

1416. and so we receive you

1417. we believe in your name

  1418. we confess

1419. we confess and say sorry

1420. for all the voices that we've led in

  1421. all the spirits

  1422. of this world

  1423. that we follow

  1424. we orient our lives

  1425. our hearts

1426. around you and you alone

1427. for the sole simple reason

  1428. that you

1429. came from God in the flesh

1430. and you gave your life to us

1431. there was no other way to save us

1432. we are that far away from you

1433. and therefore there is no other name we worship

  1434. Jesus your name

1435. the name above every name

1436. that nothing compares to you

1437. and if you are for us

1438. that none can be against

1439. that we are more than conquerors

1440. that we will never be separated

  1441. from your love

  1442. Jesus you truly are

  1443. the king of kings

1444. and the lord of lords

1445. the author and perfecter of our faith

1446. the beginning and the end

  1447. the alpha and omega

  1448. everything comes from you

1449. and you will have the final say

  1450. so we take heart

1451. though in this world we have trouble

1452. we take heart because you have overcome

  1453. thank you

  1454. thank you

1455. it's in your name we pray

  1456. amen

  1457. you
