  1. Let's pray before we get into the word.

  2. Lord, we come before you and humble ourselves before you.

  3. ! We are ready to receive your word.

  4. ! We thank you for it, that you chose to make yourself known,

  5. that the God which no one has ever seen has made himself known

  6. through Jesus Christ and to us when we love one another.

  7. Lord, we pray that your spirit would show us more of your beauty

  8. to receive your love for us and for this to transform us

  9. and for us to love you even more and praise you even more for it.

  10. Lord, may everything I say be your words and not my own.

  11. Speak through me, Lord. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

  12. All right, good morning, church.

  13. So in the last few months, we've been going through 1 John.

  14. And we've seen in this letter that John encourages us to know God and to love him.

  15. And to love him even more deeply.

  16. And he says, we saw this last week, that there is only one way to God,

  17. and that is through Jesus.

  18. That was the focus last week, that we're not all blind men

  19. touching different parts of the same elephant,

  20. but there really is only one way to God.

  21. At the same time, knowing God and loving God

  22. is inseparable from following his commandments and loving others.

  23. John says that God is light and God is love.

  24. And there's no darkness in God.

  25. So if we're walking in darkness and continuing in sin,

  26. then we really need to question whether we know God

  27. and abide in him who is light.

  28. That's what we saw previous weeks in 1 John.

  29. And now recently, we've been talking more about love,

  30. that we must love one another.

  31. That means, at the bare minimum, that we shouldn't hate one another.

  32. We shouldn't be like Cain, who murdered his brother.

  33. That's the bare minimum.

  34. You shouldn't murder your brother.

  35. But more than that, we should love.

  36. We should love like Jesus loved,

  37. who didn't murder, but who laid down his life,

  38. the righteous for the unrighteous.

  39. And that's the way we ought to love.

  40. We should lay down our lives for one another.

  41. Love has to cost something.

  42. That's what we heard.

  43. We can talk about love, but talk is cheap.

  44. John says, let us not love in word or in talk,

  45. but in deed and in truth.

  46. So the question is, are we willing to love one another,

  47. even if it costs us?

  48. And now we're getting to part of the letter in 1 John,

  49. where John gives us a more extended treatment of love.

  50. What is love itself?

  51. Where does love come from?

  52. And how are we able to love?

  53. And why should we love one another?

  54. This is what John talks about in chapter 4 now.

  55. So let's read the passage together.

  56. We'll read John chapter 4, verses 7 to 12.

    John 4:7–12

  57. Can we all stand as we read the word of God together?

  58. Yeah.

  59. Thanks.

  60. 1 John chapter 4, verses 7 to 12.

    1 John 4:7–12

  61. Beloved, let us love one another,

  62. for love is from God,

  63. and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.

  64. Anyone who does not love does not know God,

  65. because God is love.

  66. In this, the love of God was made manifest among us,

  67. that God sent his only son into the world,

  68. so that we might live through him.

  69. In this is love,

  70. not that we loved God,

  71. but that he loved us,

  72. and sent his son to be the propitiation for our sins.

  73. Beloved, if God so loved us,

  74. we also ought to love one another.

  75. No one has ever seen God.

  76. If we love one another,

  77. God abides in us,

  78. and his love is perfected in us.

  79. This is the word of God.

  80. You can take a seat.

  81. Beloved, let us love.

  82. That's how verse 7 begins,

  83. and that will be our focus for today.

  84. Beloved, people who are loved,

  85. let us love one another.

  86. Let us love one another,

  87. and first we do this because love is a matter of identity.

  88. That's how John thinks of it.

  89. We see this in verse 7.

  90. It says,

  91. Whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.

  92. Whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.

  93. Loved is wrapped up in our identity as being children of God.

  94. Whoever loves,

  95. in other words,

  96. everybody who loves is born of God.

  97. And the way we act and feel in love

  98. is intertwined with who we are,

  99. our identity as children of God.

  100. There's an interesting implication of verse 7.

  101. And we see this.

  102. Take, for example,

  103. people here have a Hong Kong ID card.

  104. Right?

  105. You could say that

  106. if you have a permanent Hong Kong ID card,

  107. then you're a permanent resident.

  108. This is evidence of this.

  109. Right?

  110. But logically,

  111. you could also flip around this statement

  112. and say it the other way.

  113. It's also true that

  114. only those who have,

  115. only those who are permanent residents

  116. have an ID card,

  117. a permanent ID card.

  118. Right?

  119. You can't get this ID card

  120. if you're not,

  121. if you don't have PR.

  122. And the same thing is true here.

  123. We can flip around the statement logically

  124. and say that

  125. if everybody who loves is born of God,

  126. then it's also true that

  127. those who are not born of God

  128. do not love.

  129. Said another way,

  130. verse 7 means that

  131. only those who are born of God

  132. in fact love.

  133. That's the logical implication of it.

  134. And that's a pretty bold statement.

  135. And that, I think,

  136. should make us raise the bar

  137. on what love even is.

  138. Because John here is making

  139. an exclusive claim on love.

  140. Not just on truth,

  141. but on love itself.

  142. At least on a particular kind of love.

  143. That there is a love

  144. that only belongs to those

  145. who know God.

  146. And that's a bit puzzling to me

  147. because when I look around,

  148. people outside of the church

  149. that do not know Christ

  150. do love,

  151. as far as I can tell,

  152. and sometimes even appear to love

  153. more than those in the church.

  154. See, I can see parents

  155. who truly love their children.

  156. I see people who give very generously,

  157. philanthropically,

  158. effective altruism.

  159. Or I hear of soldiers in wars

  160. who sacrifice themselves

  161. for their brothers.

  162. That is love.

  163. Or Tony Stark,

  164. he takes one for the whole world

  165. at the end of Avengers.

  166. Right?

  167. So we've been talking about love

  168. the last weeks

  169. and challenging each other

  170. to show love to one another.

  171. For example,

  172. inviting people over for a meal

  173. or being more loving

  174. to our families.

  175. And that's great.

  176. That really is great.

  177. And we should continue doing that.

  178. We should continue loving one another.

  179. But also,

  180. if we square up those things alone

  181. with verse 7

  182. that says,

  183. everyone who loves

  184. has been born of God,

  185. I don't think that's quite enough.

  186. There must be something more

  187. to love

  188. that John's talking about.

  189. Something deeper.

  190. Something that is shown

  191. in those things

  192. that we're talking about.

  193. But there's something more

  194. to this love.

  195. Because those who are not

  196. born of God,

  197. John says,

  198. some of the things

  199. we're talking about,

  200. those who are not born of God,

  201. can love in those ways.

  202. So,

  203. what is this love

  204. that John is talking about?

  205. Because love to John

  206. is more than just

  207. goodwill

  208. or good vibes

  209. and good feelings.

  210. John is talking about

  211. a love

  212. that is perfected.

  213. A perfect sort of love.

  214. Verse 12 says,

  215. if we love one another,

  216. God abides in us

  217. and his love

  218. is perfected in us.

  219. Or verse 18

  220. later in the chapter says,

  221. perfect love

  222. cast out fear.

  223. This perfect love

  224. is the goal.

  225. That perfect love

  226. is what John's talking about.

  227. It's true that the world loves,

  228. but such love

  229. is always tainted by sin

  230. and is limited.

  231. It's easy to say

  232. that we love one another,

  233. but who can say

  234. that they really

  235. love perfectly?

  236. naturally.

  237. Naturally,

  238. it's easy to love

  239. when love fulfills

  240. sexual desires

  241. or when people

  242. recognize our generosity

  243. and philanthropy

  244. or when this love

  245. is reciprocated

  246. and makes us feel good.

  247. It's harder to love,

  248. though,

  249. when our friends

  250. show up for dinner

  251. an hour late

  252. or just cancel on us

  253. last minute.

  254. Or it's easy to love

  255. your boyfriend,

  256. girlfriend,

  257. fiance,

  258. unless they're slow

  259. to respond to your messages

  260. or too busy

  261. for a date.

  262. It's difficult enough

  263. sometimes to love

  264. those who are dear to us,

  265. but God calls us

  266. even higher,

  267. not just to love

  268. those who love us,

  269. but to love even

  270. our enemies.

  271. Jesus says in his

  272. Sermon on the Mount,

  273. love your enemies

  274. and pray for those

  275. who persecute you

  276. so that, again,

  277. identity is what's in view,

  278. so that you may be

  279. sons of your Father

  280. who is in heaven.

  281. For if you love

  282. those who love you,

  283. what reward do you have?

  284. Do not even the

  285. tax collectors

  286. or sinners

  287. do the same.

  288. And if you greet

  289. only your brothers,

  290. what more are you

  291. doing than others?

  292. Do not even the Gentiles,

  293. in other words,

  294. those outside the church,

  295. do the same?

  296. They can also love

  297. in these ways.

  298. But Jesus goes on,

  299. you therefore

  300. must be perfect

  301. as your heavenly Father

  302. is perfect.

  303. See,

  304. we are called to love

  305. to be perfect

  306. and to love perfectly.

  307. This is unconditional love

  308. that extends

  309. even to our enemies.

  310. And that's what John

  311. means when he says here,

  312. let us love.

  313. That's the kind of love

  314. that's found

  315. in the children of God

  316. and that marks

  317. who are the children of God.

  318. Now,

  319. that's a pretty high standard.

  320. So,

  321. how can we do this?

  322. How can we love

  323. in this way?

  324. Where does this love

  325. come from?

  326. Well,

  327. notice how

  328. verse 7 starts.

  329. It says,

  330. beloved,

  331. let us love.

  332. Beloved,

  333. loved ones,

  334. let us love

  335. one another.

  336. We can love

  337. in this way

  338. because love

  339. is from God

  340. and God is love.

  341. We can love

  342. because we are loved

  343. by the one

  344. who is love

  345. itself.

  346. Love is our identity

  347. because likewise,

  348. love is part of

  349. God's essential nature.

  350. God is love.

  351. You can't take away,

  352. if you look at the sun,

  353. you can't take away

  354. heat and light

  355. from the sun.

  356. And in the same way,

  357. you can't remove

  358. love from God.

  359. He just radiates

  360. white hot love.

  361. He shines with love.

  362. He is light.

  363. God's love

  364. existed from eternity

  365. in the trinity,

  366. the father loving

  367. the son

  368. and the son loving

  369. the father

  370. in perfect unity

  371. along with the spirit.

  372. Each person

  373. of the trinity

  374. delighting in one another

  375. and glorifying one another,

  376. loving each other

  377. perfectly.

  378. And out of this

  379. passionate love,

  380. God created the world

  381. to share his goodness,

  382. to share this love

  383. with us.

  384. He created us

  385. so that we would

  386. know him

  387. and love him

  388. and enjoy his love.

  389. But all of us

  390. turn from God

  391. and we rejected

  392. his love

  393. and chose to worship

  394. other things.

  395. That is sin.

  396. Sin fundamentally

  397. is a rejection

  398. of God.

  399. When Adam and Eve

  400. ate of the fruit

  401. in the garden,

  402. they believed

  403. that sin

  404. is better

  405. than what God

  406. promised them.

  407. God promised them life

  408. and said,

  409. you will prosper,

  410. but they believed

  411. that God was hiding

  412. a good thing

  413. from them.

  414. when our hearts

  415. chase after money,

  416. it's because

  417. we don't believe

  418. that God provides

  419. for us.

  420. When we sin,

  421. it's fundamentally

  422. because we don't believe

  423. that God provides

  424. for us

  425. and he's the one,

  426. he's the only one

  427. who can satisfy

  428. the cravings

  429. of our hearts.

  430. Sexual sin

  431. or making our desires

  432. our identity

  433. shows that we crave

  434. fulfillment

  435. in following

  436. our own way

  437. rather than delighting

  438. in God's

  439. perfect love for us.

  440. or pride

  441. or desire for power

  442. is because we want

  443. to exalt ourselves,

  444. we want to raise up

  445. ourselves

  446. more than

  447. we want to worship God

  448. and recognize

  449. his love for us.

  450. We sort of spit

  451. in God's face

  452. when we ignore

  453. his passionate love,

  454. all that he is,

  455. his white hot love

  456. for us,

  457. and instead use

  458. this life and breath

  459. that he gave us

  460. that was designed

  461. for relationship

  462. with him.

  463. But instead of that,

  464. we use that

  465. merely to worship

  466. and enjoy

  467. the things that he made.

  468. That's what sin is

  469. fundamentally.

  470. We rejected God,

  471. we wanted nothing

  472. to do with him.

  473. Yet,

  474. God showed

  475. his love for us

  476. in that while

  477. we were still sinners,

  478. Christ died for us.

  479. Jesus dying for us

  480. is the greatest

  481. revelation

  482. of God's love

  483. and of love

  484. generally.

  485. That's what

  486. verse 9 says.

  487. It says,

  488. in this,

  489. the love of God

  490. was made manifest

  491. among us,

  492. that God sent

  493. his only son

  494. into the world

  495. so that we might

  496. live through him.

  497. The consequence

  498. and punishment

  499. of our sin

  500. is death,

  501. but God sent

  502. his son,

  503. Jesus,

  504. into the world

  505. to save us.

  506. We were God's enemies,

  507. yet he still

  508. loved us.

  509. Verse 10 says,

  510. God loved us

  511. and sent his son

  512. to be the propitiation

  513. for our sins.

  514. His son,

  515. God's son,

  516. Jesus,

  517. came in the flesh.

  518. That's what we

  519. heard last week.

  520. God came in the flesh

  521. for us

  522. and Jesus lived

  523. a perfect life

  524. and died on the cross

  525. as a propitiation.

  526. In other words,

  527. an atoning sacrifice,

  528. a sacrifice

  529. for our sins.

  530. We needed a propitiation,

  531. we needed an atoning sacrifice

  532. because our sin

  533. deserved death

  534. and Jesus took

  535. the punishment

  536. that we deserved

  537. on the cross

  538. for our sins

  539. and died in our place

  540. so that we might

  541. live through him.

  542. That's what verse 10

  543. is saying.

  544. And Jesus didn't just die

  545. but he rose from the dead

  546. on the third day

  547. and just as Jesus

  548. rose from the dead,

  549. we also have new life

  550. and access to God

  551. if we believe in him.

  552. Jesus died and rose

  553. so that we might

  554. live through him.

  555. And that is

  556. perfect love.

  557. This is the love of God

  558. that is manifested to us.

  559. Jesus dying on the cross

  560. for us.

  561. That is the main way

  562. where God reveals

  563. that he is loved

  564. and that he loves us.

  565. Verse 10 says,

  566. in this is love,

  567. not that we love God,

  568. not that we love God

  569. because we didn't love God,

  570. we didn't love him at all.

  571. Very much the opposite.

  572. We could have been

  573. the ones

  574. who were chanting,

  575. protesting,

  576. a mob,

  577. crying out

  578. for Jesus

  579. to be crucified.

  580. We could have been

  581. those mocking Jesus

  582. as he went to the cross.

  583. But Jesus didn't

  584. get angry at them,

  585. he didn't snap back

  586. at them.

  587. He loved them.

  588. And in fact,

  589. their mocking,

  590. their rejection

  591. was exactly

  592. the reason why

  593. he was there

  594. in the first place.

  595. Because in this is love,

  596. not that we love God,

  597. but that he loved us

  598. and sent his son

  599. as the propitiation

  600. to die on the cross

  601. for our sins.

  602. As Jesus was being mocked

  603. and rejected,

  604. Jesus,

  605. what did he do?

  606. He just continued

  607. bleeding out on the cross

  608. for those who were

  609. rejecting him

  610. and prayed even

  611. that God would accept

  612. his propitiation,

  613. his atoning sacrifice.

  614. He prayed for God,

  615. forgive them

  616. for they do not know

  617. what they're doing.

  618. While we were his enemies,

  619. Jesus died for us.

  620. That's God's perfect love

  621. on display

  622. and that's the love

  623. that we're called to,

  624. to love perfectly,

  625. sacrificially,

  626. without limit,

  627. even loving those

  628. who hate us,

  629. who reject us,

  630. who mock us,

  631. who annoy us,

  632. who bother us.

  633. In this is love,

  634. not that we loved God,

  635. but that Jesus died

  636. on the cross

  637. for our sins.

  638. And now,

  639. what does that mean to us?

  640. How do we respond?

  641. Well, verse 11 says,

  642. Beloved,

  643. if God so loved us,

  644. if he loved us

  645. in this way,

  646. we ought also

  647. to love one another.

  648. Okay, great.

  649. So let's do that this week.

  650. Let's go love.

  651. Let's love one another.

  652. We discussed this practically

  653. before asking,

  654. how can we love?

  655. In what ways can we love?

  656. We talked about this

  657. in our midweek groups.

  658. Right?

  659. Inviting people over

  660. for dinner,

  661. loving your coworkers,

  662. being less annoyed

  663. with those who bother you.

  664. Let's go and do those things.

  665. Keep doing those things.

  666. Let's love one another.

  667. We also ought to one another.

  668. But in addition to

  669. what,

  670. the what,

  671. in what ways can we love?

  672. I'd also like us to

  673. see a bit

  674. why and how

  675. we ought to love.

  676. Verse 11 says,

  677. If God so loved us,

  678. we also

  679. ought to love one another.

  680. And my question then is,

  681. how does God's love

  682. Jesus dying on the cross,

  683. how does God's love

  684. make us

  685. also ought to love?

  686. Why does God's love

  687. mean that we

  688. also ought to love?

  689. Now there's two ways,

  690. there's at least two ways

  691. we can interpret this.

  692. Right?

  693. When John says

  694. we ought to love,

  695. you could interpret that

  696. to mean

  697. we ought to love

  698. because we're under

  699. an obligation,

  700. because we owe it.

  701. Right?

  702. Because we were in

  703. such a great debt to God

  704. in our sin,

  705. a huge debt

  706. that we can never pay back.

  707. There's nothing

  708. we could do,

  709. but God,

  710. he was merciful to us,

  711. he was gracious to us.

  712. We talked about that previously.

  713. God cancelled

  714. our debt.

  715. He forgave us in Christ.

  716. And if God

  717. so loved us

  718. with such a great love,

  719. mercy,

  720. if he loved us

  721. in this way,

  722. then you could think

  723. we owe it to God

  724. to love others also.

  725. Right?

  726. If Jesus died

  727. for us,

  728. then don't we owe

  729. our entire lives

  730. to him.

  731. He died for me

  732. so the least I could do,

  733. you could think,

  734. is smile more to others

  735. or stack the chairs

  736. after service.

  737. I ought to.

  738. Is this what

  739. this means?

  740. I don't think so.

  741. Right?

  742. This is not

  743. how we're meant to love

  744. because if it is,

  745. then we're in

  746. huge trouble.

  747. It would be bad news

  748. if this is how

  749. we ought to love.

  750. Because if we

  751. ought to love

  752. because we owe God

  753. something,

  754. because we're in,

  755. yeah,

  756. if we ought to love

  757. because we owe God

  758. something,

  759. then that means

  760. that we're still

  761. in debt.

  762. If we owe God

  763. something,

  764. that means that

  765. our debt hasn't

  766. been paid

  767. and our sins

  768. aren't forgiven.

  769. So this is not

  770. how we ought to love,

  771. not out of a debt,

  772. not because we owe

  773. something.

  774. Right?

  775. Because Jesus is

  776. the propitiation

  777. for our sins.

  778. It is finished.

  779. And we don't honor God

  780. by trying to pay him

  781. back,

  782. by trying to pay back

  783. this debt that we owed.

  784. And we can't.

  785. Right?

  786. If you were

  787. $50 million in debt

  788. and God paid it all

  789. for you,

  790. Jesus paid it all

  791. for you,

  792. you can't pay him

  793. back by giving him

  794. a crumpled up $20 bill

  795. out of your back pocket.

  796. How silly would that be?

  797. But I think we do

  798. try to do this sometimes.

  799. We do try to earn,

  800. pay back God's love

  801. for us.

  802. You might think,

  803. okay,

  804. maybe not $20,

  805. that's too little.

  806. But I'll do better.

  807. I'll love more this week.

  808. I'll be nicer to that guy.

  809. I ought to.

  810. I'll give God back

  811. maybe $50,

  812. $100,

  813. do we find ourselves

  814. doing that sometimes?

  815. But we can't earn

  816. God's approval.

  817. We can't.

  818. That's fundamentally

  819. the wrong attitude.

  820. And we,

  821. if we try to love

  822. in this way,

  823. at some point,

  824. our tanks will run empty.

  825. That's not how

  826. we're meant to love.

  827. If we're trying to love

  828. in this way,

  829. we will fall short.

  830. That's not how

  831. we ought to love.

  832. John is using the word

  833. ought in an encouraging way.

  834. Remember that love

  835. is tied with

  836. our identity.

  837. We love because

  838. love is from God.

  839. And we are his children.

  840. God is love.

  841. It's his nature.

  842. Love is his nature.

  843. Love freely,

  844. freely radiates from him.

  845. And that also

  846. is true of his children.

  847. Just like how

  848. MJ didn't have hair.

  849. That's because

  850. James also didn't have hair.

  851. So in the same way,

  852. we are his children.

  853. We are like him.

  854. The apple doesn't fall

  855. far from the tree.

  856. Right?

  857. So when John says

  858. that we ought to love,

  859. he means it in the same way

  860. that fish ought to swim

  861. or that birds ought to fly

  862. or that flowers ought to bloom

  863. or stars ought to shine

  864. or how Bonnie ought to laugh.

  865. And that's

  866. because it's in our nature.

  867. That's just what we do.

  868. Right?

  869. In the same way,

  870. God's children

  871. also ought to love.

  872. It's part of our nature

  873. and design.

  874. And in doing so,

  875. that's how we find

  876. life and fulfillment

  877. and purpose.

  878. God's love

  879. changes us.

  880. Jesus didn't just die

  881. to forgive our sins.

  882. His love

  883. changed us completely.

  884. In 2 Corinthians,

  885. Paul writes,

  886. Therefore,

  887. if anyone is in Christ,

  888. he is a new creation.

  889. The old has passed away.

  890. Behold,

  891. the new has come.

  892. See,

  893. God's love is so intense

  894. that when he loves us,

  895. he completely transforms us.

  896. We are made new.

  897. God is love.

  898. And if he himself,

  899. love himself,

  900. his spirit is dwelling within us,

  901. that means also

  902. that love must dwell within us.

  903. God cannot dwell within us

  904. if love doesn't dwell in us,

  905. if God is love.

  906. Right?

  907. It's like how a fire

  908. can't abide

  909. in a can of gasoline

  910. without an explosion happening.

  911. So also,

  912. God can't abide in us

  913. also without love

  914. abiding in us

  915. because God is love.

  916. That's what verse 12 says.

  917. No one has ever seen God.

  918. No one has seen God.

  919. But if we love one another,

  920. God abides in us

  921. and his love

  922. is perfected in us.

  923. His perfect love.

  924. We have this through Jesus

  925. when we love one another.

  926. That is the way

  927. in which we ought to love.

  928. Not out of obligation,

  929. but freely

  930. because he changed us.

  931. Because if God so loved us,

  932. we are changed

  933. and when we love,

  934. his love is perfected in us.

  935. That's why Jesus says that

  936. his yoke is easy

  937. and his burden is light.

  938. We ought to love freely,

  939. not out of obligation

  940. as a weight on our shoulders.

  941. But instead,

  942. he broke our chains.

  943. He freed us

  944. so that loving

  945. becomes easy and light

  946. the more and more we do it.

  947. The more and more

  948. his spirit refines us

  949. and perfects us.

  950. God's command to love

  951. is not an obligation,

  952. a weight on our shoulders,

  953. but just a command

  954. to take hold

  955. of what Jesus

  956. has done for us.

  957. Love and become

  958. the children of God

  959. that you are,

  960. that Jesus' blood

  961. made you.

  962. And so this week

  963. as we love,

  964. let's try to remember

  965. God loved me

  966. and so I'm free to love.

  967. It's not that I have to love

  968. because Jesus loved me

  969. and I also ought to do it.

  970. But no,

  971. Jesus loved me

  972. and I am his child.

  973. And God's children

  974. freely,

  975. generously,

  976. radiate love

  977. because God is love.

  978. He changed me.

  979. I can love

  980. as he loves now,

  981. perfectly,

  982. his blood bought

  983. that for me.

  984. And maybe not perfectly now

  985. because we are still

  986. stained by sin.

  987. But one day

  988. when he returns,

  989. I know

  990. I'll love perfectly.

  991. There'll be no more sin,

  992. no more tears.

  993. We'll be in the presence

  994. of God.

  995. We will see him,

  996. know him as he fully is,

  997. just as we're fully known.

  998. And in the meantime,

  999. let's press forward

  1000. day by day

1001. to love ever more perfectly,

1002. to be the child of God

1003. that he called us to be

1004. and made us to be.

  1005. So again,

  1006. beloved,

1007. people who are loved by God,

  1008. let us love.

  1009. Love is from God

1010. and he showed his love to us

  1011. by sending his son

1012. to die for our sins.

  1013. God's love

1014. gave us freedom to love

1015. and out of that freedom,

1016. we ought to love one another.

  1017. Not out of obligation,

  1018. but because his love

  1019. has transformed us.

1020. Can we do that this week?

  1021. Let's pray for that.

1022. Father, we are so humbled.

1023. We are so in awe.

  1024. What is man

1025. that you're mindful of him?

1026. What is the son of man

1027. that you care for him?

1028. We are just little specks.

  1029. More than that,

  1030. little people who,

  1031. out of everything

  1032. that you've made,

  1033. the wind obeys you,

  1034. nature obeys you,

1035. the sun rises and falls

  1036. at your command.

  1037. But we chose

1038. to use the life and breath

  1039. that you gave us

  1040. to curse you,

  1041. dishonor your name,

  1042. to mock you,

  1043. reject you,

1044. the one who gave us

  1045. life and breath.

  1046. But Lord,

  1047. you are love.

  1048. We praise you

  1049. that you loved us

  1050. and gave your son

  1051. to die for us.

  1052. Lord, may this love,

  1053. may this truth

  1054. sink deeper and deeper

  1055. in our hearts.

  1056. Spirit,

  1057. make your love

  1058. abide in us.

1059. And with that change us,

  1060. help us, God,

  1061. to love

1062. as you've called us to.

  1063. An example of Jesus.

1064. To lay down our lives,

  1065. not just for those

  1066. who love us,

  1067. before our enemies even.

  1068. And God,

1069. we know we can't do this

  1070. on our own.

  1071. I can't even love those

  1072. who I love,

  1073. who love me.

  1074. So Lord,

  1075. we need you.

  1076. We can't do this

  1077. on our own.

  1078. We can't pay back

1079. the debt that we owe.

1080. But Jesus paid it all

  1081. and you've transformed us

  1082. as your children

  1083. to love perfectly,

  1084. to be holy

  1085. as you are holy.

1086. You call us to this

  1087. and you will finish

  1088. the good work

1089. that you started in us.

  1090. We look forward

  1091. to seeing that day

1092. when we see the end of it.

  1093. Thank you, Lord,

  1094. for all this.

  1095. In Jesus' name.

  1096. Amen.

  1097. Amen.

  1098. Amen.

  1099. Amen.

  1100. Amen.

  1101. Amen.

  1102. Amen.

  1103. Amen.

  1104. Thank you.

  1105. Thank you.

  1106. Thank you.

  1107. Thank you.

  1108. Thank you.

  1109. Thank you.

  1110. Thank you.

  1111. Thank you.

  1112. Thank you.

  1113. Thank you.

  1114. Thank you.

  1115. Thank you.

  1116. Thank you.

  1117. Thank you.

  1118. Thank you.

  1119. Thank you.

  1120. Thank you.

  1121. Thank you.

  1122. Thank you.

  1123. Thank you.

  1124. Thank you.

  1125. Thank you.

  1126. Thank you.

  1127. Thank you.

  1128. Thank you.

  1129. Thank you.

  1130. Thank you.

  1131. Thank you.

  1132. Thank you.

  1133. Thank you.

  1134. Thank you.

  1135. Thank you.

  1136. Thank you.

  1137. Thank you.

  1138. Thank you.

  1139. Thank you.

  1140. Thank you.

  1141. Thank you.

  1142. Thank you.

  1143. Thank you.

  1144. Thank you.

  1145. Thank you.

  1146. Thank you.

  1147. Thank you.

  1148. Thank you.

  1149. Thank you.

  1150. Thank you.

  1151. Thank you.

  1152. Thank you.

  1153. Thank you.

  1154. Thank you.

  1155. Thank you.

  1156. Thank you.

  1157. Thank you.

  1158. Thank you.

  1159. Thank you.

  1160. Thank you.

  1161. Thank you.

  1162. Thank you.

  1163. Thank you.

  1164. Thank you.

  1165. Thank you.

  1166. Thank you.

  1167. Thank you.

  1168. Thank you.

  1169. Thank you.
