  1. As we sit, let's bow our heads and pray together.

  2. Our gracious Father, we pray now that you would open our eyes and open our ears and open our hearts.

  3. That we might receive your truth and your truth would set us truly free.

  4. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

  5. Amen. So, if you've been around churches any length of time, you'll have heard preachers say,

  6. God has a plan. And in this world which seems so broken at the moment,

  7. you might be wondering to yourselves what that plan actually is.

  8. But God does have a plan. In fact, God has more than one plan.

  9. First thing he has is a plan for your life.

  10. And the problem with that is you'll only discover that plan the more you submit to him

  11. and to his will for your life. The more likely you are to know what his plan is for you.

  12. When I look through the annals of church history about the men and women

  13. who have done great things for God, the first thing I note about them is

  14. they're not plaster saints as we say, but they are people who are surrendered

  15. to what God wants for them.

  16. You might like to think about that in your own life.

  17. But God has a bigger plan.

  18. And the bigger plan is he wants to restore his kingdom here on earth.

  19. And you need to put away, out of your minds, the idea that God's kingdom is a place.

  20. You can't go on chewy and get there.

  21. God's rule, sorry, God's kingdom is where God's sovereign rule exists in the hearts of human beings.

  22. God's plan B, if you like, is the church.

  23. And I have no idea why God would choose us to be his plan B.

  24. Except that he is a God of grace and a God of mercy.

  25. And a God who wants the very best for you.

  26. And in the mind of God, the very best for you

  27. is when you bring your life under his control.

  28. As the old street preachers put it,

  29. when you take self off the throne

  30. and put Jesus on the throne.

  31. You might well ask yourself,

  32. what's going wrong with the world at the moment?

  33. And the answer is,

  34. I was having lunch with some church leaders just last week,

  35. and one of them asked me very bluntly,

  36. do I think that what's going on in the world at the moment

  37. is the end of the world emerging?

  38. I said, well, there have been several people throughout history

  39. who thought that that was happening,

  40. but what I can say is this,

  41. it does look as though some of the signs that the Bible refers to

  42. are coming about in our generation.

  43. No one can say for sure whether it's the Lord's plan to return,

  44. but if we're called to read the signs of the times,

  45. then looking at those signs,

  46. it does seem that Jesus' return might be imminent.

  47. Someone say amen.

  48. Don't sound too keen on it.

  49. So the church is God's plan B,

  50. and God's plan is this,

  51. that the church, you and me,

  52. have to model an alternative way of living.

  53. Something to use Graham Tomlin's memorable verse

  54. that makes the church provocative,

  55. simply by the way we live together and individually,

  56. will provoke others to ask some deeper questions,

  57. rather than just get through life superficially,

  58. like one of those water boatmen running across a pond.

  59. Have we got to where we are?

  60. Well, I'm going to give you a very simple explanation.

  61. It's not my explanation, as a matter of fact.

  62. It's the explanation of St. Paul.

  63. And St. Paul thought very clearly,

  64. the reason why the world is the way it is,

  65. and Paul lived in very godless times,

  66. the Roman Empire,

  67. which occupied the ancient Near East,

  68. was a very profligate society.

  69. Just about every sin,

  70. terrible sin,

  71. that you could think of,

  72. existed there.

  73. Sexual immorality,

  74. lying, cheating, murder,

  75. child prostitution,

  76. it was there.

  77. And Paul has a very simple explanation of this.

  78. He says,

  79. it's the result of human sin.

  80. The result of human sin.

  81. It's why,

  82. not only have I played a part implicitly

  83. in the way the world is,

  84. but at the same time,

  85. I can play a part

  86. in making it different.

  87. Paul says in Romans chapter 3

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  88. and verse 23,

  89. all have sinned.

  90. You get that?

  91. That's everybody in church today.

  92. That's everybody who's existed

  93. throughout the whole of human history.

  94. All have sinned,

  95. says St. Paul,

  96. and fall short of the glory of God.

  97. And if you were to read from Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  98. you would read there

  99. Paul's explanation

  100. of the way the world is.

  101. Just let me give you,

  102. if I may for a moment,

  103. a flavor of that.

  104. If you have a Bible to handle,

  105. you've got it on your phone,

  106. you could turn to it right now.

  107. Romans chapter 1.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  108. Here's what the great apostle writes

  109. about the way the world is.

  110. He says this,

  111. That's interesting.

  112. That when we sin,

  113. what we're effectively doing

  114. is repressing the truth about God.

  115. Paul goes on,

  116. See, one of the things

  117. that's going wrong in this world

  118. at the moment is

  119. that it's being governed

  120. by some extremely wrong-headed ideas.

  121. A little bit more about that

  122. in just a moment.

  123. And then,

  124. this terrible verse,

  125. verse 24.

  126. In the light of the sinfulness

  127. of human beings,

  128. Paul writes this,

  129. Therefore,

  130. God gave them over

  131. in the sinful desires of their hearts

  132. to the sexual impurity

  133. for the degrading of their bodies

  134. with one another.

  135. I don't think Paul was obsessed with sex.

  136. But it's not a bad litmus test

  137. of the culture of a society

  138. to see what it thinks about sex.

  139. Call me old-fashioned.

  140. Call me fuddy-duddy.

  141. Call me a man of my generation.

  142. But what I see in our culture

  143. is sexual profligacy.

  144. I read recently

  145. about a website.

  146. I've never looked at it

  147. and I'm not going to give you

  148. the website address

  149. because I don't think

  150. it'd be good for you.

  151. But it's called,

  152. the website is Ashley Madison

  153. and its strap line is this,

  154. Life is short,

  155. have an affair.

  156. You know,

  157. hands up if it makes you,

  158. I mean, not literally,

  159. but if that makes you feel sick.

  160. You know,

  161. David Watson

  162. always used to say publicly

  163. that one of the Satan's

  164. wily tricks

  165. to undermine Christians

  166. was to encourage Satanists

  167. to pray against Christian marriage.

  168. We have used our freedom

  169. to become slaves to sin.

  170. And so,

  171. John writes

  172. in the passage

  173. we had read to us,

  174. if the Son sets you free,

  175. you will be free indeed.

  176. He also said this,

  177. if you hold to my teaching,

  178. you are really my disciples,

  179. then you will know the truth

  180. and the truth

  181. will set you free.

  182. I have

  183. little,

  184. I understand easily

  185. why the world is

  186. the way it is.

  187. And that is,

  188. when a society

  189. turns to godlessness,

  190. let me remind you

  191. that according to

  192. the last sentence done,

  193. there are more people

  194. now who have

  195. no belief in God

  196. than people who believe in him,

  197. whatever that belief

  198. might look like.

  199. I have no doubt

  200. it is the godlessness

  201. of our society

  202. which creates

  203. the wrack and ruin

  204. and brokenness

  205. of the world.

  206. And God

  207. has a better plan

  208. for the world.

  209. And that is,

  210. it should be governed

  211. by his sovereign rule

  212. in our hearts.

  213. If the son sets you free,

  214. you shall be free indeed.

  215. God sees what's wrong

  216. but the amazing thing is

  217. God has a rescue plan.

  218. If sin is the heart

  219. of the human problem,

  220. then Jesus

  221. is the cure.

  222. And when you trust Christ,

  223. and if you haven't done that,

  224. you can do that today.

  225. If you've not trusted Christ

  226. and his finished work

  227. upon the cross of Calvary,

  228. you can make a move

  229. to God

  230. this very day.

  231. But there are three

  232. immediate benefits

  233. that accrue to you

  234. the very moment

  235. you give your life

  236. to Christ.

  237. One is,

  238. you are saved

  239. from your sin.

  240. Romans chapter 5

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  241. and verse 6,

  242. Paul writes this,

  243. it was when we were

  244. still sinful

  245. that God sent his son

  246. to die for us.

  247. How long do you think

  248. God would have to wait

  249. till you became sinless?

  250. Don't shout out.

  251. A long time,

  252. right?

  253. The second benefit

  254. that accrues to those

  255. who trust Christ

  256. is this,

  257. you are saved

  258. from the coming wrath.

  259. 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 1:9

  260. chapter 1

  261. verses 9 and 10.

  262. Paul tells the

  263. Christians

  264. in Thessalonica

  265. that they're saved

  266. from the wrath of God

  267. which is about to fall

  268. on society.

  269. And the third thing is,

  270. and this is not

  271. about pie in the sky

  272. when you die,

  273. but the third benefit

  274. that accrues to you

  275. the moment you trust Christ

  276. is that you will not

  277. have to face

  278. a Christless eternity.

  279. The wages of sin

  280. is death,

  281. wrote Paul,

  282. but the free gift

  283. of God

  284. is eternal life

  285. in union

  286. with Christ Jesus.

  287. Here is God's plan.

  288. The rescue act

  289. and then,

  290. amazingly,

  291. God doesn't leave us

  292. on our own

  293. to kind of struggle

  294. with all this,

  295. to work out

  296. how we can live

  297. our lives,

  298. how we can live

  299. obediently to Christ

  300. and find the freedom

  301. that he talks about.

  302. How do we allow

  303. the Holy Spirit

  304. to change us

  305. from the inside out?

  306. When I was a young fellow,

  307. we used to sing

  308. an old schism chorus.

  309. It was called

  310. No, Never Alone.

  311. Some of you

  312. look old enough

  313. to remember it.

  314. It goes like this,

  315. The world's fierce winds

  316. are blowing,

  317. temptation sharp and keen.

  318. I have a peace

  319. in knowing

  320. my Saviour

  321. stands between.

  322. He stands

  323. to shield me

  324. from danger

  325. when all my friends

  326. are gone.

  327. He promised

  328. never to leave me,

  329. never to leave me alone.

  330. The chorus is

  331. No, Never Alone.

  332. No, Never Alone.

  333. He promised

  334. never to leave me.

  335. No, Never Alone.

  336. If you're trying

  337. to live your

  338. Christian life

  339. without the assistance

  340. of the Holy Spirit,

  341. who will illuminate

  342. your conscience,

  343. who will teach you

  344. what Jesus

  345. has taught us,

  346. if you're trying

  347. to do it

  348. without the Holy Spirit,

  349. it's going to be

  350. a real uphill struggle.

  351. And maybe

  352. some of you

  353. are honest enough

  354. to recognize that

  355. in your life today.

  356. God's plan B

  357. is the church,

  358. you and me.

  359. A people

  360. who would believe

  361. in Jesus,

  362. a people

  363. whose earnest desire

  364. would be

  365. to become

  366. more like Jesus.

  367. and a people

  368. whose primary aim

  369. would be

  370. to do

  371. his will.

  372. Matthew chapter 7

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  373. and verse 21,

  374. Jesus says,

  375. Not everyone

  376. who calls me

  377. Lord,

  378. Lord,

  379. will enter

  380. the kingdom of heaven,

  381. but only those,

  382. only,

  383. who do the will

  384. of my Father,

  385. who is in heaven.

  386. I don't know

  387. what your assessment

  388. would be.

  389. And,

  390. in a way,

  391. I don't need to know.

  392. But I wonder

  393. if you think

  394. about the church

  395. and the call

  396. to be distinctive

  397. because we're invited

  398. to live as Jesus

  399. wants us to live.

  400. I don't know

  401. what you think.

  402. What do you think

  403. when people look

  404. at the church?

  405. Just suppose

  406. a Martian

  407. arrived on planet Earth

  408. and looked at

  409. the Church of England

  410. just now.

  411. What conclusions

  412. do you think

  413. he might draw?

  414. Do you think

  415. he would see

  416. a distinctive

  417. community

  418. fired up

  419. to live

  420. as Jesus

  421. wants us to live,

  422. to offer the world

  423. a different way

  424. of living?

  425. Or do you think

  426. he would see

  427. a group

  428. of well-meaning

  429. people

  430. who do some

  431. good things

  432. occasionally

  433. but actually

  434. whose aspirations

  435. about life

  436. seem exactly

  437. the same

  438. as everybody

  439. else's?

  440. Do we look

  441. different?

  442. God calls

  443. his church

  444. to account

  445. in times

  446. of godlessness.

  447. What would God

  448. say to you,

  449. my friend,

  450. about the quality

  451. of your Christian

  452. life today?

  453. In John chapter 8,

    John 8 chapter mention

  454. we're told

  455. that Jesus

  456. was specifically

  457. talking to Jews

  458. who had believed

  459. in him.

  460. In other words,

  461. the starting point

  462. for all this stuff

  463. is belief

  464. in him.

  465. Today

  466. might be the day

  467. that the Holy Spirit

  468. whispers in your ear.

  469. and what you see

  470. in this passage

  471. is two

  472. fundamentally

  473. challenging

  474. things

  475. that Jesus

  476. has to say

  477. to the world

  478. and the way

  479. it is.

  480. The first thing

  481. is about freedom.

  482. I think today

  483. our view

  484. of freedom

  485. has been fashioned

  486. by an idea

  487. that was initially

  488. applied to the world

  489. of economics.

  490. it's called

  491. libertarianism.

  492. It's what leads

  493. to free market

  494. economies.

  495. But that now

  496. has been applied

  497. to ethics.

  498. We don't want

  499. any restraint.

  500. We don't want

  501. any moral baggage

  502. loaded upon us

  503. by anybody

  504. in today's world.

  505. In the book

  506. of Proverbs

  507. you've probably

  508. heard that verse

  509. that says

  510. where there is

  511. no vision

  512. what does it say?

  513. The people perish.

  514. Did you know

  515. that the Hebrew

  516. in that verse

  517. more accurately

  518. means

  519. where people

  520. have no

  521. revelation

  522. they cast

  523. off restraint?

  524. Do you see

  525. a society

  526. that's

  527. happy to work

  528. under restraint

  529. to live

  530. life

  531. with some

  532. moral values?

  533. Or do you

  534. see a society

  535. that's making

  536. it up

  537. as it goes

  538. along?

  539. When there

  540. is no

  541. revelation

  542. the people

  543. cast off

  544. restraint.

  545. See not

  546. only is the

  547. answer

  548. Jesus

  549. but Jesus

  550. is concerned

  551. as well

  552. to set

  553. your life

  554. on a new

  555. track.

  556. Do you

  557. see what's

  558. going on

  559. in this

  560. passage?

  561. Jesus

  562. has a

  563. completely

  564. different

  565. idea

  566. of freedom

  567. than the

  568. way the

  569. world will

  570. teach you.

  571. So

  572. this is

  573. it.

  574. The world

  575. says

  576. you can

  577. do what

  578. you like

  579. as long

  580. as it

  581. doesn't harm

  582. other people.

  583. What a

  584. fatuous

  585. way of

  586. thinking

  587. that is.

  588. How can

  589. you ever

  590. know

  591. whether your

  592. example

  593. affects

  594. another

  595. person

  596. or not?

  597. How can

  598. you know

  599. if you

  600. think you

  601. are secretly

  602. having an

  603. affair with

  604. another

  605. person?

  606. How can

  607. you know

  608. that when

  609. your spouse

  610. eventually

  611. finds out

  612. is it

  613. going to

  614. affect

  615. them?

  616. Of course

  617. it's

  618. going to

  619. affect

  620. them.

  621. No.

  622. Jesus

  623. has a

  624. different

  625. plan and

  626. the plan

  627. is this

  628. that we

  629. will find

  630. freedom

  631. when we

  632. live as

  633. he wants

  634. us to

  635. live.

  636. The

  637. primary

  638. healthy

  639. desire

  640. of a

  641. disciple

  642. of Jesus

  643. Christ

  644. would be

  645. to live

  646. as Jesus

  647. wants us

  648. to live.

  649. please

  650. please

  651. please

  652. don't

  653. buy into

  654. the idea

  655. that freedom

  656. is I can

  657. do what

  658. the heck

  659. I like

  660. as long

  661. as it

  662. doesn't

  663. hurt

  664. other

  665. people.

  666. Those of

  667. you who

  668. know your

  669. philosophy

  670. know this

  671. stems from

  672. a guy

  673. called

  674. John

  675. Stuart

  676. Mill.

  677. And

  678. John

  679. Stuart

  680. Mill was

  681. very

  682. very clear.

  683. He said

  684. this,

  685. this is what

  686. he wrote,

  687. the only

  688. purpose for

  689. which power

  690. can be

  691. rightly

  692. exercised

  693. over any

  694. member of

  695. a civilised

  696. community

  697. against his

  698. or her

  699. will is

  700. to prevent

  701. harm to

  702. others.

  703. Look

  704. around you.

  705. Has that

  706. view of

  707. freedom led

  708. to a

  709. civilised

  710. society?

  711. You tell

  712. me.

  713. The second

  714. thing is

  715. Jesus has

  716. a completely

  717. different view

  718. of truth.

  719. Truth in

  720. Jesus'

  721. mind is

  722. entirely

  723. applied to

  724. the word

  725. of God.

  726. His

  727. words

  728. and the

  729. word of

  730. God as

  731. revealed in

  732. the whole

  733. of Holy

  734. Scripture.

  735. You don't

  736. think the

  737. Old Testament

  738. is important?

  739. I beg to

  740. differ from

  741. you.

  742. I've just

  743. been asked

  744. to go to

  745. a church

  746. in this

  747. deanery and

  748. explain why

  749. the Old

  750. Testament is

  751. important.

  752. I mean,

  753. not least

  754. because the

  755. early apostles

  756. only had the

  757. Old Testament

  758. to preach

  759. the gospel

  760. from.

  761. But this

  762. view of

  763. truth is

  764. very

  765. basically

  766. that if

  767. human beings

  768. are to live

  769. in a civilised

  770. way, we

  771. need to agree

  772. on some

  773. truths that

  774. are absolute,

  775. not truths

  776. that are

  777. slippery,

  778. that are

  779. difficult to

  780. get your

  781. hand on.

  782. In the

  783. 50s and

  784. 60s in

  785. the world

  786. of universities,

  787. an idea

  788. came to

  789. bear.

  790. It was

  791. meant to

  792. be largely

  793. for literary

  794. criticism,

  795. but it

  796. stretched its

  797. way into

  798. ethical

  799. thinking as

  800. well.

  801. It was

  802. called

  803. deconstructionism.

  804. You don't

  805. need to

  806. know about

  807. that, but

  808. what it

  809. did do

  810. was it

  811. bred in

  812. the hearts

  813. and minds

  814. of men

  815. cynicism.

  816. Any

  817. statement of

  818. truth is

  819. immediately

  820. suspect,

  821. and the

  822. only truth

  823. that I

  824. can believe

  825. in is

  826. the one

  827. that I

  828. feel might

  829. be the

  830. right one.

  831. Thus,

  832. Meghan

  833. Markle,

  834. in that

  835. unfortunate

  836. interview with

  837. Piers Morgan,

  838. where Piers

  839. Morgan,

  840. improperly in

  841. a way,

  842. just called

  843. her an

  844. outright liar

  845. to her

  846. face.

  847. What was

  848. Meghan

  849. Markle's

  850. response?

  851. Very

  852. modern

  853. response.

  854. truth.

  855. She's

  856. being

  857. accused

  858. of being

  859. a liar.

  860. Do you

  861. know what

  862. she said

  863. to him?

  864. That's

  865. my

  866. truth.

  867. Truth

  868. now is

  869. no longer

  870. seen as

  871. something

  872. objective,

  873. something

  874. I'm

  875. absolutely,

  876. it's

  877. subjective.

  878. And it

  879. depends on

  880. what I

  881. feel.

  882. Jesus

  883. has a

  884. different

  885. idea.

  886. No

  887. wonder our

  888. society is

  889. going

  890. haywire with

  891. these

  892. cockeyed

  893. ideas at

  894. the heart

  895. of it.

  896. And I

  897. wonder when

  898. we will

  899. understand

  900. this.

  901. I

  902. wonder when

  903. we will

  904. understand

  905. that the

  906. church,

  907. I mean it's

  908. about you

  909. individually,

  910. but it's

  911. about us

  912. together.

  913. That together

  914. we seek to

  915. live a

  916. life that

  917. is distinctive.

  918. I think

  919. many of

  920. you may

  921. have the

  922. idea that

  923. to be

  924. distinctive in

  925. Christian terms

  926. is to be

  927. weird.

  928. And I

  929. was telling

  930. my home

  931. group the

  932. other evening

  933. that when

  934. I worked

  935. in Slough,

  936. there was a

  937. community

  938. there of

  939. lay people

  940. who were

  941. seeking to

  942. live a

  943. distinctive

  944. life.

  945. You know,

  946. full credit

  947. to them,

  948. except they

  949. just came

  950. across as

  951. weird.

  952. They wore

  953. brown

  954. dressing

  955. gowns,

  956. and for

  957. some reason,

  958. tell me

  959. where you

  960. would find

  961. this in

  962. the Bible.

  963. They had

  964. a thing

  965. against

  966. soap.

  967. You know,

  968. don't get

  969. downwind of

  970. them is my

  971. advice.

  972. To be a

  973. Christian is

  974. the most

  975. normal way

  976. to live,

  977. not abnormal

  978. way to live.

  979. Life of

  980. faith is a

  981. team sport.

  982. God's

  983. love.

  984. It's not

  985. just about

  986. you.

  987. It's about

  988. us and

  989. our witness

  990. in this

  991. town that

  992. God has

  993. called us

  994. to serve

  995. and to

  996. play our

  997. part in

  998. its salvation.

  999. It's about

  1000. collectively

  1001. showing to

  1002. the world

  1003. in which we

  1004. find ourselves

  1005. that there

  1006. is a

  1007. different way

  1008. to live.

  1009. You don't

  1010. have to be

  1011. mown down

  1012. by the

  1013. values of

  1014. thinking in

  1015. this world.

  1016. No,

  1017. there is a

  1018. different way.

  1019. And I

  1020. wonder,

  1021. when am I

  1022. going to

  1023. stop making

  1024. excuses?

  1025. I wonder,

  1026. when are you

  1027. going to

  1028. stop making

  1029. excuses?

  1030. The end

  1031. of the

  1032. book of

  1033. Judges,

  1034. the very

  1035. last verse

  1036. in that

  1037. book,

  1038. there is a

  1039. verse I've

  1040. come to

  1041. love.

  1042. It says

  1043. this,

  1044. in those

  1045. days,

  1046. and this

  1047. was during

  1048. a time

  1049. when Israel

  1050. had gone

  1051. through

  1052. terrible

  1053. military

  1054. and political

  1055. upheaval,

  1056. et cetera,

  1057. et cetera.

  1058. And just

  1059. so you

  1060. know,

  1061. when men

  1062. couldn't

  1063. hack

  1064. leadership

  1065. at the

  1066. season of

  1067. Judges,

  1068. God called

  1069. a woman

  1070. called

  1071. Deborah,

  1072. who,

  1073. it turns

  1074. out,

  1075. was quite

  1076. handy

  1077. with the

  1078. jawbone

  1079. of an

  1080. axe,

  1081. and took

  1082. it to

  1083. the

  1084. Philistines

  1085. and stuck

  1086. it on

  1087. them.

  1088. In

  1089. those days,

  1090. the last

  1091. verse says,

  1092. Israel had

  1093. no king.

  1094. everyone

  1095. did as

  1096. he saw

  1097. fit.

  1098. Can I

  1099. say something

  1100. that's going

  1101. to sound

  1102. very simplistic

  1103. to you,

  1104. and I

  1105. don't

  1106. apologize

  1107. for it.

  1108. If Jesus

  1109. is not

  1110. the king

  1111. of your

  1112. life,

  1113. if Jesus

  1114. is not

  1115. the king

  1116. of our

  1117. society,

  1118. then people

  1119. will do

  1120. just that.

  1121. They will

  1122. do what

  1123. they see

  1124. as fit.

  1125. I have,

  1126. if I can

  1127. find it on

  1128. my phone,

  1129. that wonderful

  1130. hymn by

  1131. Bishop

  1132. Walsham

  1133. Howe.

  1134. It was a

  1135. time when

  1136. bishops did

  1137. good stuff.

  1138. And he

  1139. wrote these

  1140. words in

  1141. that amazing

  1142. hymn,

  1143. It is a

  1144. thing most

  1145. wonderful.

  1146. He said,

  1147. I sometimes

  1148. think about

  1149. the cross

  1150. and shut

  1151. my eyes

  1152. and try

  1153. to see

  1154. the cruel

  1155. nails

  1156. and crown

  1157. of thorns

  1158. and Jesus

  1159. crucified

  1160. for me.

  1161. Even

  1162. could I

  1163. see him

  1164. die,

  1165. I could

  1166. but see

  1167. a little

  1168. part of

  1169. that great

  1170. love,

  1171. which like

  1172. a fire

  1173. is always

  1174. burning

  1175. in his

  1176. heart.

  1177. It is

  1178. most wonderful

  1179. to know

  1180. his love

  1181. for me

  1182. is so

  1183. free

  1184. and sure,

  1185. but it is

  1186. more wonderful

  1187. to see

  1188. my love

  1189. for him

  1190. so faint

  1191. and poor.

  1192. Is this

  1193. a moment?

  1194. Is this

  1195. a moment

  1196. when the

  1197. Holy Spirit

  1198. shakes your

  1199. soul and

  1200. wakes you

  1201. to the

  1202. spiritual

  1203. nonsense

  1204. that's

  1205. going on

  1206. in the

  1207. world

  1208. and we

  1209. might decide

  1210. together

  1211. to stand

  1212. up,

  1213. to pray

  1214. up,

  1215. to speak

  1216. up

  1217. and collectively

  1218. as well as

  1219. individually

  1220. make a

  1221. difference

  1222. in this

  1223. world.

  1224. Of course,

  1225. there are

  1226. green shoots

  1227. all through

  1228. the history

  1229. of the

  1230. church.

  1231. Wonderful

  1232. things

  1233. happen

  1234. and we've

  1235. heard about

  1236. TLG.

  1237. That is

  1238. wonderful.

  1239. But the

  1240. most wonderful

  1241. thing is

  1242. when human

  1243. eyes are

  1244. opened and

  1245. they see

  1246. Jesus,

  1247. not sitting

  1248. on a throne

  1249. with a

  1250. massive crown

  1251. on his

  1252. head and

  1253. loads of

  1254. people serving

  1255. him, but

  1256. on a cross,

  1257. which,

  1258. thank God,

  1259. is an

  1260. empty cross.

  1261. because Jesus

  1262. is alive

  1263. and he's

  1264. here now

  1265. and he

  1266. wants to

  1267. occupy your

  1268. soul,

  1269. that together

  1270. we might

  1271. show the

  1272. world there

  1273. is a

  1274. different way

  1275. to live.

  1276. Can we

  1277. pray?

  1278. Our

  1279. gracious

  1280. Lord,

  1281. we are

  1282. truly

  1283. sorry

  1284. that our

  1285. lives can

  1286. fall so

  1287. short of

  1288. what you

  1289. want from

  1290. us.

  1291. And Lord,

  1292. I cannot

  1293. speak for

  1294. anybody else

  1295. in this

  1296. church and

  1297. their sin,

  1298. but I can

  1299. certainly speak

  1300. for my own.

  1301. And Lord,

  1302. please fill

  1303. me,

  1304. fill us,

  1305. with that

  1306. Holy Spirit.

  1307. Lord,

  1308. that we

  1309. might truly

  1310. become people

  1311. that you

  1312. want us to

  1313. be.

  1314. That,

  1315. Father,

  1316. people would

  1317. look at the

  1318. church and

  1319. see a

  1320. genuine

  1321. alternative way

  1322. of living,

  1323. something that's

  1324. not weird,

  1325. but which is

  1326. so normal,

  1327. it would be

  1328. striking and

  1329. provocative.

  1330. And Father,

  1331. I pray now,

  1332. Lord,

  1333. as we

  1334. gather

  1335. together,

  1336. that you

  1337. would speak

  1338. to our

  1339. hearts

  1340. and give

  1341. us,

  1342. Lord,

  1343. conviction

  1344. that we

  1345. need to do

  1346. something.

  1347. So,

  1348. Lord,

  1349. I pray

  1350. that you

  1351. would speak

  1352. to us

  1353. today and

  1354. that you

  1355. would help

  1356. us individually

  1357. and collectively

  1358. to be that

  1359. different person,

  1360. that different

  1361. community,

  1362. whose lives

  1363. become meaning

  1364. makers in the

  1365. lives of

  1366. others.

  1367. And we

  1368. ask this in

  1369. the name of

  1370. the Lord

  1371. Jesus Christ

  1372. and those

  1373. who agreed

  1374. said together,

  1375. Amen.

  1376. Amen.

  1377. Amen.

  1378. Amen.

  1379. Amen.

  1380. Amen.

  1381. Amen.

  1382. Amen.

  1383. Amen.

  1384. Amen.

  1385. Amen.
