  1. Shall we pray, Father God, may your word encourage us and enthuse us and challenge us, we pray, in Jesus' name. Amen.

  2. What would Jesus do? Encourage, shape us and lead us home.

  3. Hope. How do we keep hope alive when we're faced with this story today?

  4. What does that actually look like in our lives?

  5. And on this day which is full for us all of mixed emotions, of fathers that loved us, guided us, encouraged us and parented us well,

  6. for the ones who made sacrifices for us, the ones who struggle or abdicated their responsibilities as a father,

  7. the ones who left too soon, the ones who became fathers to us and took us, who took on that role for us,

  8. maybe as stepfathers, carers, foster parents, grandfathers, the ones who have gone home to be with our Heavenly Father.

  9. And as a father, I had hopes, I have hopes for my children.

  10. From the day they were born, it may be even before that.

  11. We have hopes for our children that they will be grounded, faithful, prayerful,

  12. they have lives that are fruitful, honest and caring.

  13. And in this story this morning that resonates, what happened to this son who decided to leave?

  14. Who says, I'm off.

  15. Not only is he leaving, the son asks for his share of the inheritance.

  16. And this isn't given until the father dies, within the context, by asking, the son is saying,

  17. actually, I wish you were dead.

  18. You know, perhaps parents here know what that is like.

  19. The pain of a child saying that to you as they leave, either as they leave physically or emotionally.

  20. A parting comment or words that cut you deep.

  21. There is nothing more painful than a child that turns to a parent and rejects their love.

  22. Our story today is complex.

  23. It rips us apart for the father and the son and the older brother and the whole community.

  24. The question is, when we read this, is where did it start?

  25. We aren't told.

  26. And many of us here and listening, maybe on a podcast as well,

  27. would struggle perhaps to know the day when a domestic situation

  28. or an issue within the family or an issue within their child

  29. turned from a happy, loving child who was fun to be around.

  30. The rich memories of growing up, of holding this child in your arms,

  31. and now the painful reality of how the child has turned into a painful, hurtful teenager

  32. who didn't want or seems to gel with the family anymore.

  33. There is nothing in this story where I guess the father hoped

  34. that the clock just wouldn't spin back a few years.

  35. Some here will know the pain of that.

  36. And our prayers are with you.

  37. There are crucial messages in this parable

  38. that shocked the listeners of Jesus' day.

  39. The Pharisees, the religious people who kept the law

  40. and believe me, did they keep the law.

  41. In Jesus' time, you did not dishonor.

  42. Your father or your mother.

  43. It brought shame.

  44. This was a public shaming

  45. by a son openly in rebellion against the father

  46. and indeed his whole house and the older brother.

  47. For the father,

  48. others would judge him.

  49. This is shame on lack of authority and control

  50. that others would be placing on the father as well.

  51. And rebellion was not to be tolerated.

  52. In fact, the father would publicly

  53. rip a piece of his own clothing

  54. off of his garment

  55. in the temple or before the people

  56. to show that he had actually cut off his son forever,

  57. that there was no way back.

  58. Why didn't the father do this in the story?

  59. Because this isn't the father of the culture.

  60. This is the father that shapes the culture.

  61. Really need to hear that this morning.

  62. This isn't the father of the culture.

  63. This is our heavenly father who shapes the culture.

  64. Because this is where we should play the song Frozen.

  65. Let it go.

  66. Let it go.

  67. Because that's exactly what the father does.

  68. Perhaps the most shocking part

  69. for the listener of Jesus' day

  70. is that he gives his son the share

  71. and lets him go

  72. and bears the cost.

  73. That's the thing, isn't it, in this story?

  74. The father bears the cost.

  75. It points again to the cross.

  76. It points to everything.

  77. The father bears the cost.

  78. And the point that we often miss

  79. is that the son takes it

  80. and he knows exactly what he's doing.

  81. The son takes it free at last.

  82. Free to do what?

  83. Free to go and sin and rebel.

  84. Does that speak maybe to us of a culture for today?

  85. Maybe as we look around us,

  86. maybe even again,

  87. look inside our own church national structure

  88. of a culture of rebellion

  89. against the father's teaching

  90. and the father's love

  91. and the father's kindness.

  92. Free at last, really?

  93. Maybe he thought so at the beginning.

  94. And what of the older brother?

  95. What of the older brother?

  96. Scandalous!

  97. Me!

  98. Me!

  99. Me!

  100. Me!

  101. The older brother!

  102. You know?

  103. I remain.

  104. I, the one who has to stay,

  105. the one who is still working

  106. until his father dies

  107. to see anything of the wealth of prosperity.

  108. You know?

  109. Imagine then the resentment

  110. that is born in the older brother,

  111. simmering

  112. simmering

  113. as he sees his younger brother

  114. seemingly rewarded

  115. for his rebellion

  116. as the father lets him go

  117. with no sign of cutting him off forever.

  118. This is the story

  119. not of one lost boy

  120. but of two.

  121. One has left home

  122. the one that stayed at home.

  123. Both were lost to the father

  124. in different ways.

  125. One in open rebellion,

  126. one in simmering resentment

  127. and anger.

  128. And the older son

  129. cuts deep with many Christians

  130. because the older son

  131. carries on, doesn't he?

  132. Doing the things the same way.

  133. Faithful,

  134. fed,

  135. comfortable,

  136. waiting for his inheritance

  137. at the end

  138. because he has a right.

  139. I deserve it.

  140. It's mine.

  141. And others who don't conform

  142. don't deserve

  143. the same forgiveness

  144. and grace

  145. that I receive.

  146. Does that resonate

  147. with some Christians

  148. that we have met?

  149. Who did the father love most

  150. at that time?

  151. You know,

  152. this is God

  153. we are talking about.

  154. Jesus knew

  155. that the story

  156. would challenge

  157. the listeners

  158. to the core.

  159. Maybe it does today.

  160. And the one thing

  161. I ask of us

  162. as a church

  163. on this day

  164. that we never become

  165. like the older brother.

  166. You know,

  167. Tim Keller

  168. in his book

  169. The Prodigal God

  170. speaks of the son

  171. who was lost

  172. at home.

  173. Tim Keller says,

  174. Elder brothers

  175. expect their goodness

  176. to pay off

  177. and if it doesn't

  178. there is confusion

  179. and rage.

  180. If you think

  181. goodness and decency

  182. is the way

  183. to merit

  184. a good life

  185. with God

  186. you will be eaten up

  187. with anger

  188. since life

  189. never goes

  190. the way we wish.

  191. You will always feel

  192. that you are owed

  193. more than you are getting.

  194. you will always see

  195. someone doing

  196. better than you

  197. in some aspect

  198. of life

  199. and ask

  200. why this person

  201. and not me?

  202. After all that I've done

  203. this resentment

  204. is your own fault.

  205. It is not caused

  206. by the prosperity

  207. of the other person

  208. but by your own efforts

  209. to control life

  210. through your own performance.

  211. but it will constantly

  212. cause you

  213. to lose your rooting

  214. and footing

  215. in various ways.

  216. We also see

  217. that the elder brother

  218. has a strong sense

  219. of his own superiority.

  220. He points out

  221. how much better

  222. his own moral record is

  223. than the lover

  224. of prostitutes

  225. and in disdainful language

  226. he says

  227. this son of yours.

  228. He won't even

  229. acknowledge his brother

  230. as a brother

  231. anymore.

  232. Elder brothers

  233. base their self-images

  234. on being hardworking

  235. or moral

  236. or members

  237. of an elite clan

  238. or extremely smart

  239. and savvy.

  240. This inevitably

  241. leads to feeling

  242. superior

  243. to those

  244. who don't have

  245. those same qualities.

  246. In fact

  247. competitive comparison

  248. is the main way

  249. elder brothers

  250. achieve a sense

  251. of their own

  252. significance.

  253. Racism

  254. and classism

  255. are just

  256. different versions

  257. of this form

  258. of the self-salvation

  259. project.

  260. This dynamic

  261. becomes

  262. exceptionally

  263. intense

  264. when elder brothers

  265. pride themselves

  266. above all

  267. for their

  268. right

  269. to religion.

  270. what would

  271. Jesus do?

  272. The parable

  273. spells it out.

  274. This gives us

  275. a picture

  276. of the love

  277. of God

  278. his patience

  279. his persistence

  280. his character

  281. his never-ending

  282. hope

  283. in reversing

  284. the bad choices

  285. that we so often

  286. make.

  287. He watches

  288. and he waits

  289. and he never

  290. gives up.

  291. And we know

  292. our prodigals

  293. and we know

  294. our prodigals

  295. won't come back

  296. smelling sweetly

  297. many of us

  298. didn't.

  299. We know that.

  300. But what we knew

  301. is that we came

  302. back and we were

  303. welcomed

  304. by a loving God.

  305. They didn't come

  306. back with a deep

  307. sense of wanting

  308. maybe to sing

  309. old hymns

  310. that they'd learned

  311. as a teenager

  312. because tradition

  313. control

  314. and judgment

  315. may be one of

  316. the few things

  317. that drove them

  318. away.

  319. What they want

  320. to meet

  321. is the gracious

  322. and forgiving

  323. love of the

  324. father

  325. and not the

  326. older brother.

  327. Many years ago

  328. many of us

  329. went to a

  330. conference

  331. it's probably

  332. one of the most

  333. significant conferences

  334. that I've ever

  335. been to

  336. and it was

  337. by Rob Parsons

  338. Care for the

  339. Family

  340. and it was

  341. called

  342. Bringing Home

  343. the Prodigals

  344. and it

  345. challenged my

  346. heart for the

  347. Prodigals

  348. and for the

  349. elder brothers

  350. in the church

  351. brothers and

  352. sisters

  353. who so often

  354. wait to pour

  355. condemnation on

  356. other people

  357. in Christ

  358. there is

  359. no condemnation

  360. as we welcome

  361. people home

  362. and Rob

  363. shared

  364. when the

  365. father's house

  366. is full

  367. of the

  368. father's love

  369. the Prodigals

  370. will come

  371. home.

  372. Our job

  373. is to fill

  374. our house

  375. with the

  376. father's love

  377. because I

  378. believe at this

  379. time there is

  380. an urgency

  381. for our

  382. Prodigals

  383. to come

  384. home

  385. and we

  386. need to be

  387. here and

  388. welcoming and

  389. ready.

  390. In our

  391. reading this

  392. morning it

  393. challenges us

  394. in hope that

  395. having prayed

  396. and watched

  397. and waited

  398. to throw

  399. our arms

  400. around our

  401. returning

  402. Prodigals

  403. and more

  404. importantly

  405. to own

  406. the struggle

  407. that makes

  408. us recoil

  409. in judgment

  410. and disgust.

  411. The father

  412. saw the son

  413. far off

  414. he's been

  415. watching.

  416. Who amongst

  417. us are

  418. the watch

  419. keepers on

  420. the walls

  421. looking out

  422. for those

  423. who are

  424. returning home

  425. and praying

  426. for them to

  427. come home

  428. and when we

  429. saw the

  430. son

  431. and when

  432. he saw

  433. the son

  434. dragging

  435. himself

  436. home

  437. with his

  438. rehearsed

  439. story

  440. in his

  441. mind

  442. and maybe

  443. that resonates

  444. with you

  445. as we come

  446. back to the

  447. father with

  448. this rehearsed

  449. story of

  450. I am so

  451. sorry I

  452. know what

  453. I have done

  454. and whatever

  455. he is there

  456. coming through

  457. returning home

  458. and when he

  459. sees the son

  460. ready to live

  461. as a servant

  462. to grovel

  463. in humility

  464. the father

  465. in this

  466. story

  467. didn't stop

  468. to ask

  469. the son

  470. all the

  471. questions

  472. he didn't

  473. ask the

  474. question and

  475. said what

  476. have you

  477. done

  478. he didn't

  479. say what

  480. what did

  481. you do

  482. with my

  483. hard-earned

  484. money

  485. he didn't

  486. say why

  487. did you

  488. spend my

  489. money on

  490. sex workers

  491. he didn't

  492. say why

  493. did you

  494. use it on

  495. drugs and

  496. gambling and

  497. squandering

  498. it on

  499. people you

  500. didn't know

  501. he didn't

  502. know he

  503. said he

  504. didn't say

  505. you have

  506. brought shame

  507. on me

  508. and it's

  509. punishment

  510. time

  511. no

  512. he runs

  513. to him

  514. in several

  515. different

  516. versions in

  517. different versions

  518. of the gospel

  519. the father

  520. runs to

  521. the son

  522. this is

  523. shocking

  524. the father

  525. in those

  526. times did

  527. not run

  528. but he

  529. did

  530. and before

  531. the son

  532. can say

  533. his rehearsed

  534. speech

  535. he puts

  536. a ring

  537. on his

  538. finger

  539. and restores

  540. him to

  541. the status

  542. straight away

  543. of the

  544. son

  545. no

  546. off of

  547. course

  548. no

  549. grovelling

  550. he restores

  551. him to

  552. the place

  553. that he

  554. needs to

  555. be

  556. in his

  557. dignity

  558. and

  559. authority

  560. and before

  561. he can

  562. say anything

  563. he puts

  564. a robe

  565. on him

  566. this is

  567. my son

  568. who was

  569. lost

  570. but now

  571. is found

  572. he is

  573. home

  574. let's

  575. celebrate

  576. is that

  577. what we

  578. expect

  579. of our

  580. father's

  581. love

  582. of our

  583. father

  584. god

  585. do we

  586. party hard

  587. when people

  588. come and

  589. return

  590. do we

  591. party

  592. maybe

  593. for many

  594. of us

  595. who have

  596. long and

  597. long prayed

  598. for our

  599. children

  600. to come

  601. back

  602. to the

  603. father

  604. we never

  605. stop loving

  606. them

  607. but do we

  608. party

  609. and do we

  610. celebrate on

  611. those days

  612. do we

  613. party

  614. when people

  615. join us

  616. in whatever

  617. mess they

  618. come

  619. sadly the

  620. older brother

  621. is the

  622. only one

  623. who doesn't

  624. go to the

  625. party

  626. Tim Keller

  627. reminds us

  628. again

  629. this is

  630. act two

  631. comes to

  632. an unthinkable

  633. conclusion

  634. Jesus

  635. the

  636. storyteller

  637. deliberately

  638. leaves the

  639. elder son

  640. in an

  641. alienated

  642. state

  643. the bad

  644. son enters

  645. the father's

  646. face

  647. but the

  648. good one

  649. will not

  650. the lover

  651. of prostitutes

  652. is saved

  653. but the

  654. man of

  655. moral

  656. rectitude

  657. is still

  658. lost

  659. we can

  660. almost hear

  661. the Pharisees

  662. gasp

  663. as this

  664. story ends

  665. it was

  666. the complete

  667. reversal

  668. of everything

  669. that they

  670. had been

  671. taught

  672. Jesus

  673. does not

  674. simply

  675. leave it

  676. at that

  677. it gets

  678. even more

  679. shocking

  680. why doesn't

  681. the elder

  682. brother

  683. go in

  684. he himself

  685. gives the

  686. reason

  687. because I

  688. have never

  689. disobeyed

  690. you

  691. the elder

  692. brother

  693. is not

  694. losing

  695. the father's

  696. love in

  697. spite of

  698. his goodness

  699. but because

  700. of it

  701. it is not

  702. his sins

  703. that create

  704. the barrier

  705. between him

  706. and his

  707. father

  708. it is the

  709. pride he

  710. has

  711. in his

  712. own

  713. moral

  714. record

  715. it is not

  716. his wrongdoing

  717. but his

  718. righteousness

  719. that is

  720. keeping him

  721. from sharing

  722. in the

  723. feast

  724. for his

  725. returning

  726. brother

  727. sadly

  728. maybe our

  729. prayer this

  730. morning is

  731. today

  732. oh lord

  733. let me

  734. never be

  735. like the

  736. elder

  737. brother

  738. doing this

  739. just because

  740. it makes

  741. me feel

  742. righteous

  743. in my

  744. own sight

  745. and of

  746. others

  747. the father

  748. watched

  749. the father

  750. prayed his

  751. son home

  752. I like you

  753. have been

  754. forgiven

  755. much

  756. each and

  757. every one

  758. of us

  759. have

  760. we know

  761. that's why

  762. he has

  763. placed his

  764. hope in

  765. you and

  766. me

  767. to bring

  768. and welcome

  769. the prodigals

  770. home

  771. and as we

  772. look out

  773. we look out

  774. with hope

  775. and grace

  776. and I

  777. pray at

  778. this time

  779. with a

  780. sense of

  781. urgency

  782. where else

  783. would people

  784. find such

  785. amazing grace

  786. than in the

  787. arms of our

  788. heavenly father

  789. and of his

  790. church

  791. people will we

  792. continue to

  793. keep watch for

  794. our prodigals

  795. will we keep

  796. praying

  797. when they

  798. return seeking

  799. will they be

  800. met with

  801. grace

  802. and overwhelming

  803. love

  804. I don't know

  805. what pushed

  806. or led them

  807. away

  808. but we're

  809. high enough

  810. on a hill

  811. to see them

  812. coming

  813. and to

  814. welcome them

  815. home

  816. God has

  817. given us

  818. space and

  819. resources

  820. we are free

  821. to welcome

  822. them

  823. it will

  824. change us

  825. it will

  826. challenge us

  827. and it is

  828. messy

  829. the father

  830. didn't smell

  831. too good

  832. I guess

  833. as he held

  834. his son

  835. tightly

  836. it won't be

  837. about us

  838. it will be

  839. more about

  840. hope

  841. love

  842. perseverance

  843. grace

  844. and character

  845. I'm going

  846. to leave

  847. the final

  848. word today

  849. with Rob

  850. Parsons

  851. with a

  852. story that

  853. he told

  854. on that

  855. day

  856. which

  857. probably

  858. changed my

  859. life forever

  860. in a village

  861. near here

  862. is a large

  863. old house

  864. an elderly

  865. lady lives

  866. there alone

  867. and every

  868. night as

  869. darkness

  870. falls

  871. she puts

  872. a light

  873. on in

  874. the attic

  875. her son

  876. left home

  877. 25 years

  878. ago

  879. rather like

  880. the prodigal

  881. in this

  882. parable

  883. but she

  884. has never

  885. given up

  886. hope that

  887. one day

  888. he will

  889. come home

  890. we all

  891. know the

  892. house

  893. and although

  894. the bulb

  895. must

  896. occasionally

  897. need

  898. replacing

  899. none of

  900. us have

  901. ever seen

  902. that house

  903. without a

  904. light on

  905. it's for

  906. her son

  907. I pray

  908. that Christ

  909. will be

  910. that house

  911. that the

  912. light of

  913. Christ

  914. will welcome

  915. people on

  916. God's

  917. terms

  918. not on

  919. ours

  920. it will

  921. burn so

  922. bright in

  923. love

  924. that people

  925. would be

  926. drawn to

  927. him and

  928. to us

  929. Lord

  930. Lord what

  931. can I

  932. do

  933. what can

  934. we do

  935. to increase

  936. that love

  937. my son

  938. is home

  939. I'll tell

  940. you what

  941. let's throw

  942. a really

  943. solemn

  944. religious

  945. service

  946. for him

  947. no

  948. let's just

  949. throw a

  950. party

  951. and welcome

  952. them home

  953. no matter

  954. what's

  955. happened

  956. let's keep

  957. the lights

  958. on

  959. let's keep

  960. the father's

  961. house

  962. not for

  963. ourselves

  964. but for

  965. those that

  966. are coming

  967. this morning

  968. Tim can we

  969. thanks

  970. whether we

  971. came home

  972. some time

  973. ago or

  974. whether we

  975. haven't

  976. been home

  977. for years

  978. we know

  979. the father's

  980. love

  981. whether

  982. today it's

  983. you maybe

  984. listening to

  985. this podcast

  986. that suddenly

  987. you've

  988. realised for

  989. the first

  990. time the

  991. overwhelming

  992. gracious

  993. love of

  994. God

  995. if you

  996. are stumbling

  997. back

  998. not sure

  999. if you

  1000. are good

  1001. enough

  1002. don't

  1003. hesitate

  1004. the arms

  1005. of love

  1006. are waiting

  1007. for you

  1008. and you

  1009. don't even

  1010. have to

  1011. practice

  1012. any excuses

  1013. as to

  1014. why you've

  1015. been away

  1016. I'm going

  1017. to invite

  1018. you to do

  1019. what we

  1020. did many

  1021. many years

  1022. ago

  1023. down at

  1024. mine

  1025. head

  1026. at that

  1027. conference

  1028. and I'm

  1029. going to

  1030. invite you

  1031. to come

  1032. if you

  1033. wish

  1034. and write

  1035. the name

  1036. of your

  1037. prodigal

  1038. who you've

  1039. been praying

  1040. for

  1041. on a piece

  1042. of paper

  1043. and put it

  1044. at the foot

  1045. of the cross

  1046. to the

  1047. welcoming

  1048. arms of

  1049. the Lord

  1050. maybe you

  1051. don't even

  1052. want to write

  1053. a name on

  1054. it but you

  1055. just want to

  1056. you know

  1057. who that is

  1058. and just

  1059. want to

  1060. come and

  1061. put that

  1062. there

  1063. because you've

  1064. been praying

  1065. long and

  1066. hard

  1067. to be

  1068. restored

  1069. and renewed

  1070. maybe the

  1071. name that

  1072. you're going

  1073. to put on

  1074. that sheet

  1075. is for

  1076. yourself

  1077. because you

  1078. know

  1079. personally

  1080. what that

  1081. love of

  1082. God was

  1083. when you

  1084. came back

  1085. and found

  1086. his arms

  1087. around you

  1088. and you

  1089. want that

  1090. for everybody

  1091. else

  1092. because you

  1093. know

  1094. and we

  1095. know

  1096. what that

  1097. meant for

  1098. us

  1099. to be

  1100. restored

  1101. and renewed

  1102. and welcomed

  1103. home

  1104. in Jesus

  1105. name

  1106. please feel

  1107. free

  1108. as we

  1109. say

  1110. you

  1111. you

  1112. you

  1113. you

  1114. you

  1115. you

  1116. you

  1117. you

  1118. you

  1119. you

  1120. you

  1121. you
