  1. I find it's not that uncommon as a minister, if I'm out and about and not got this bit

  2. of white plastic around my neck, to find myself getting into a conversation with somebody

  3. I've not met before, and sooner or later they ask, so what do you do? And I tell them. And

  4. I usually find that the conversation at that point goes in one of two different ways. It

  5. either completely closes it down, or completely opens it up. My favourite response to that

  6. question was years ago from the evangelist Jay John, who's a minister in the Church of

  7. England. He describes how he was sitting down in a plane, about to go on a long-haul flight,

  8. got into conversation with a lady sat next to him who he'd never met before, and she

  9. spent quite a time describing to him her business that she ran. It was quite a big business, and

  10. describing all the different things that they did. And then eventually she turned to him

  11. and asked the question, so what are you doing? Rather than just tell her, he decided to have a bit of fun.

  12. He said, I bet you can't guess. She looked at him blankly, so he started to say, I work for a global enterprise.

  13. She said, do you? He said, yes I do. In fact we've got outlets in almost every country in the world.

  14. Have you? She said, yes I have. We've got hospitals, we run hospices, and homeless shelters. We do marriage work, we've got orphanages, we've got feeding programmes, educational programmes.

  15. We do all sorts of work with justice, and reconciliation, and mental health. He said, basically we look after people from birth to death.

  16. And we specialise in the area of behavioural modification.

  17. She went, wow. And by this stage, everybody else sat around, was also listening in.

  18. She said, who do you work for?

  19. She said, I work for the church.

  20. Haven't you heard of us?

  21. Today in a series of what would Jesus do,

  22. we think about the theme of social justice, social action,

  23. the place that that has within being a follower of Jesus today,

  24. and asking themselves the question, what would Jesus do in this situation right now?

  25. Sadly, there is the danger

  26. that when we think about that theme of

  27. social justice, social action,

  28. that we can fall into one of two extremes.

  29. On the one hand, we can fall into the extreme of thinking

  30. that social action, and social justice is,

  31. that's all there is to being a follower of Jesus.

  32. That's a vital part of being a follower of Jesus.

  33. But if we think that that's all there is to it,

  34. then we lose sight, or are in danger

  35. of losing sight,

  36. of the fundamental reality

  37. that being a Christian is about

  38. knowing God.

  39. Knowing God

  40. who loves us.

  41. Knowing God

  42. who sent Jesus to die for us.

  43. Knowing God as the one

  44. who raises

  45. his son to death.

  46. The one who promises us

  47. the gift of eternal life.

  48. And so, it's not without reason

  49. that over the years,

  50. occasionally you'll hear,

  51. I've heard people sort of

  52. talk of social action

  53. as part of the

  54. expression of Christian faith,

  55. and almost kind of

  56. in a derogatory way,

  57. sort of

  58. write off what they would

  59. call rather scathingly

  60. the social gospel.

  61. But on the other hand,

  62. there is the other extreme,

  63. and that's where

  64. in response

  65. to that,

  66. we so emphasize

  67. the importance

  68. of

  69. personal spirituality

  70. that we exclude

  71. the importance

  72. of social action,

  73. and reduce the gospel

  74. to only

  75. a matter of

  76. personal,

  77. individual

  78. spirituality,

  79. at the cost

  80. of paying attention

  81. to those around us

  82. who need us

  83. to take action.

  84. It was out of

  85. that extreme

  86. that

  87. the parody

  88. that I'm going to

  89. read to you now

  90. was written years ago.

  91. The parody

  92. of

  93. the story that

  94. Jesus told me

  95. he was talking about

  96. judgment in

  97. Matthew's gospel,

  98. and how

  99. eventually

  100. we will all be judged

  101. and separated

  102. as a shepherd

  103. would separate

  104. sheep from the goats

  105. and say,

  106. but I was in prison

  107. and you came

  108. and visited me,

  109. I was hungry

  110. and you fed me,

  111. and when Lord,

  112. when were we

  113. in those situations?

  114. You know that story.

  115. Here's the paraphrase,

  116. sorry,

  117. the parody

  118. that was written.

  119. I was hungry,

  120. and so you formed

  121. a humanities club

  122. and discussed

  123. my hunger.

  124. I was imprisoned,

  125. and you crept off

  126. quietly to your chapel

  127. in the cellar

  128. to pray for my release.

  129. I was naked,

  130. and in your mind

  131. you debated

  132. the morality

  133. of my appearance.

  134. I was sick,

  135. and you knelt

  136. and thanked God

  137. for your health.

  138. I was homeless,

  139. and you preached

  140. to me of the

  141. spiritual shelter

  142. of the love of God.

  143. I was lonely,

  144. and you left me alone

  145. so that you could

  146. pray for me.

  147. You see,

  148. to separate,

  149. to separate

  150. social justice,

  151. the importance

  152. of taking action

  153. from personal

  154. spirituality

  155. and faith

  156. in Christ,

  157. to separate

  158. those two things

  159. is a false

  160. dichotomy.

  161. They go together,

  162. they're inseparable,

  163. they're integral

  164. to one another,

  165. they're part

  166. of that holistic

  167. vision of expecting

  168. and living in

  169. expectation

  170. of the kingdom

  171. of God

  172. that is coming

  173. to us.

  174. And in these words

  175. that we see today

  176. from Luke's gospel,

  177. we see that

  178. there is a particular

  179. emphasis to the role

  180. of the Holy Spirit

  181. here.

  182. See,

  183. at this point

  184. of the story

  185. of Jesus,

  186. Jesus has just been,

  187. we're told,

  188. blasted by the Holy Spirit

  189. into the wilderness

  190. for 40 days

  191. and 40 nights.

  192. And then we're told

  193. that led by the Spirit,

  194. in the power

  195. of the Spirit,

  196. he returns

  197. to Galilee.

  198. And it's then

  199. when he walks

  200. into the synagogue

  201. and he takes

  202. the book of Isaiah

  203. and he reads,

  204. the Spirit

  205. of the Lord

  206. is on me

  207. because he has

  208. anointed me.

  209. And then he goes

  210. on to say,

  211. the Holy Spirit,

  212. the Holy Spirit

  213. anoints me

  214. to proclaim

  215. the good news

  216. to the poor.

  217. He has sent me

  218. to proclaim

  219. freedom to the prisoners,

  220. recovery of sight

  221. to the blind,

  222. to set the oppressed

  223. free and to proclaim

  224. the year of the Lord's favour.

  225. You see,

  226. when the Holy Spirit

  227. comes upon you,

  228. two things happen

  229. broadly.

  230. You fall in love

  231. with God

  232. and you fall in love

  233. with those around you.

  234. Now,

  235. Jesus sort of

  236. put it that way

  237. when asked

  238. what the most

  239. important commandment

  240. is.

  241. But you know,

  242. even the word

  243. commandment

  244. can miss

  245. the point

  246. if we think

  247. it is something

  248. that's theoretical.

  249. You see,

  250. loving God

  251. and loving neighbour

  252. is not something

  253. that we do

  254. because,

  255. well,

  256. you've got to do it.

  257. It's what happens

  258. when the Holy Spirit

  259. comes upon you.

  260. And the Holy Spirit

  261. turns that

  262. which is theoretical

  263. into that

  264. which is experiential.

  265. The Holy Spirit

  266. takes what

  267. at face value

  268. may appear

  269. to be a law

  270. and makes it

  271. a living reality

  272. of the way

  273. we relate

  274. to those around us.

  275. And so we read

  276. of the key role

  277. that the Holy Spirit

  278. takes here.

  279. The Holy Spirit

  280. leads Jesus

  281. and the Holy Spirit

  282. upon Jesus

  283. in Jesus

  284. and powers him

  285. with those words.

  286. The Spirit

  287. is upon me

  288. to set

  289. the people free.

  290. And it's the same

  291. Spirit

  292. that Paul writes

  293. is on every

  294. single one of us

  295. when we follow Jesus.

  296. In 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  297. chapter 1

  298. Paul says,

  299. Now it is God

  300. who makes

  301. both us

  302. and you

  303. stand firm

  304. in Christ.

  305. He anointed us,

  306. set his seal

  307. of ownership

  308. on us

  309. and put his Spirit

  310. in our hearts

  311. as a deposit

  312. guaranteeing

  313. what is to come.

  314. You see,

  315. when the Holy Spirit

  316. is upon us

  317. and within us,

  318. we catch this vision

  319. that is central

  320. to the message

  321. of Jesus,

  322. the message

  323. that the kingdom

  324. of God

  325. is coming.

  326. That ultimately

  327. when the kingdom

  328. of God

  329. comes in all fullness,

  330. we will be raised

  331. for eternity.

  332. There will be no more

  333. death or dying

  334. or suffering.

  335. There will be no more

  336. injustice.

  337. But right here

  338. and right now

  339. it begins.

  340. As the Holy Spirit

  341. takes root

  342. in our lives

  343. and instills

  344. within us

  345. that kingdom

  346. vision

  347. to usher

  348. in the kingdom

  349. here and now.

  350. That same Spirit

  351. that anoints Jesus,

  352. the same Spirit

  353. that raises Jesus,

  354. that same Spirit

  355. motivated

  356. William Wilderforce

  357. and that same Spirit

  358. motivated

  359. Martin Luther King.

  360. That same Spirit

  361. motivated

  362. Mother Teresa.

  363. The same Spirit

  364. motivated

  365. and continues

  366. to motivate

  367. millions,

  368. literally millions,

  369. of others,

  370. past and present,

  371. to both talk

  372. and walk

  373. the way of Jesus Christ.

  374. And that same Spirit

  375. longs to dwell

  376. in every single

  377. one of us.

  378. You see,

  379. as the Spirit

  380. dwells in us,

  381. so we draw nearer.

  382. And as we draw

  383. nearer to God,

  384. then we long

  385. for his kingdom

  386. to come

  387. and live like

  388. the kingdom

  389. is about to come

  390. more and more

  391. and more.

  392. not because we have to,

  393. but we just want to.

  394. You see,

  395. as we draw nearer

  396. to God the Father,

  397. things change.

  398. In our solar system,

  399. we have this system

  400. of planets

  401. and some are closer

  402. to the sun

  403. than others.

  404. Mercury is really,

  405. really, really hot.

  406. Pluto is really,

  407. really, really,

  408. really cold.

  409. And the reason

  410. why Pluto

  411. is really, really cold

  412. is that it's

  413. a great distance

  414. from the source

  415. of heat,

  416. from the sun.

  417. Mercury is really,

  418. really hot

  419. because it's so close

  420. to the sun.

  421. Our spiritual temperature

  422. changes

  423. when we draw

  424. near to God.

  425. And things change.

  426. And when we are

  427. filled with the Spirit,

  428. contrary to what

  429. some would have us believe,

  430. life doesn't get smaller,

  431. it becomes bigger.

  432. It becomes fuller,

  433. deeper,

  434. wider, richer,

  435. far more meaningful

  436. as we live in expectation

  437. of this kingdom

  438. that is coming

  439. where we will be raised

  440. for eternity

  441. and there will be

  442. no more suffering.

  443. And we can now

  444. begin to live now

  445. and see that change

  446. now in our lives.

  447. Does anybody

  448. like popcorn?

  449. Sorry,

  450. I haven't got any.

  451. I'm not offering you.

  452. Have you ever wondered

  453. what makes popcorn

  454. pop?

  455. inside every kernel

  456. there's moisture.

  457. And when you

  458. heat the moisture,

  459. the moisture

  460. turns to steam.

  461. As it turns to steam,

  462. so you get pressure

  463. and it expands

  464. and presses

  465. against the shell

  466. until the shell

  467. can no longer

  468. withstand

  469. that pressure.

  470. at which point

  471. there is this

  472. explosion of deliverance

  473. as that which is inside

  474. can no longer

  475. be held hostage

  476. to that which is outside.

  477. Now there's an image

  478. of what it is

  479. to be filled

  480. with the Holy Spirit.

  481. whenever you yearn

  482. for things to be

  483. right in the world,

  484. whenever you cry

  485. out of that question

  486. why is there

  487. this suffering,

  488. whenever you get

  489. angry for a just

  490. cause,

  491. whenever you feel

  492. that something

  493. inside that

  494. things aren't

  495. right here,

  496. you shouldn't be

  497. surprised.

  498. It's the image

  499. of God that's been

  500. there since you

  501. were born.

  502. When the Holy Spirit

  503. meets with that

  504. and begins

  505. to set work

  506. on that,

  507. life gets bigger.

  508. It gets bigger

  509. and bigger

  510. and bigger

  511. such that we

  512. no longer need

  513. to be controlled

  514. and defined

  515. and determined

  516. by our external

  517. circumstances

  518. but can dare

  519. to live differently

  520. by a different

  521. dream,

  522. a different

  523. picture

  524. and just start

  525. to do something

  526. about it.

  527. So as we think

  528. about this series

  529. What Would Jesus

  530. Do?

  531. WWJD

  532. it's a good

  533. question to ask

  534. but I've

  535. read a book

  536. recently

  537. where I think

  538. there's an even

  539. better question

  540. for us to ask.

  541. It was a book

  542. whilst I was on

  543. sabbatical

  544. I had the privilege

  545. of being able

  546. to read loads

  547. of books

  548. and one of the ones

  549. that really stuck

  550. with me

  551. was a book

  552. that was published

  553. in January

  554. this year

  555. by John Mark

  556. Comer

  557. called Practicing

  558. the Way.

  559. Some of you

  560. may have already

  561. read it.

  562. I think we might

  563. even do a series

  564. on it sometime

  565. in the next 12

  566. months as a church

  567. but Practicing

  568. the Way

  569. is a book

  570. John Mark

  571. Comer wrote

  572. about discipleship.

  573. One of the bits

  574. that really

  575. stuck in my mind

  576. is where he talks

  577. precisely about

  578. this question

  579. what would Jesus

  580. do

  581. or WWJD

  582. and he says

  583. it's a good

  584. thing to

  585. put those

  586. letters

  587. somewhere

  588. whether it's

  589. on a wristband

  590. a t-shirt

  591. or a post-it note

  592. or whatever

  593. to remind yourself

  594. of that important

  595. question in discipleship

  596. what would Jesus

  597. do?

  598. But he says

  599. there's an even

  600. better abbreviation

  601. and it's not

  602. WWJD

  603. but

  604. WWJD

  605. IHWM

  606. Now he does say

  607. that perhaps

  608. that's a bit

  609. of a mouthful

  610. but the point

  611. is

  612. he said

  613. the problem

  614. with WWJD

  615. what would Jesus

  616. do

  617. is that

  618. Jesus

  619. was a

  620. first century

  621. Jewish

  622. rabbi

  623. whereas

  624. WWJD

  625. IHWM

  626. asks the question

  627. what would Jesus

  628. do

  629. if he was me?

  630. Now maybe

  631. there's just

  632. a subtle difference

  633. but it's an

  634. important one

  635. because when

  636. we talk about

  637. Jesus

  638. we're not

  639. talking about

  640. somebody who

  641. simply just

  642. lived 2,000

  643. years ago

  644. he did

  645. but he also

  646. lives now

  647. and the question

  648. if we really

  649. really really

  650. want to get

  651. close up

  652. and personal

  653. and meaningful

  654. about this

  655. is that

  656. to ask the

  657. question

  658. what does

  659. it mean

  660. to pursue

  661. justice

  662. to pursue

  663. the kingdom

  664. where you

  665. are

  666. in a way

  667. that only

  668. you can

  669. in the

  670. life context

  671. that you

  672. find yourself

  673. in right

  674. now

  675. given the

  676. network of

  677. relationships

  678. that you have

  679. that will be

  680. unique to

  681. you

  682. given the

  683. resources

  684. that you

  685. have

  686. and don't

  687. have

  688. that again

  689. will be

  690. unique to

  691. you

  692. and given

  693. the opportunities

  694. that will be

  695. unique to

  696. you

  697. so as we

  698. come to pray

  699. now

  700. let's just

  701. join

  702. in a few

  703. moments of

  704. silence

  705. as we

  706. just hold

  707. that question

  708. before him

  709. Jesus

  710. what would

  711. you do

  712. if you

  713. were me

  714. right now

  715. let's pray

  716. together

  717. Lord we

  718. thank you

  719. that your

  720. kingdom

  721. is an

  722. invitation

  723. to each

  724. and every

  725. one of

  726. us

  727. thank you

  728. that

  729. that is

  730. an invitation

  731. for us

  732. to get

  733. involved in

  734. the most

  735. exciting

  736. movement

  737. that history

  738. has ever

  739. known

  740. and to

  741. make a

  742. difference

  743. in the

  744. lives

  745. of others

  746. thank you

  747. that that

  748. is an

  749. invitation

  750. that in

  751. the midst

  752. of all

  753. of that

  754. we get

  755. to know

  756. you as

  757. our

  758. friend

  759. our

  760. saviour

  761. as the

  762. living

  763. Lord

  764. in a

  765. profoundly

  766. personal

  767. way

  768. Lord as

  769. we do

  770. so

  771. we ask

  772. that your

  773. Holy Spirit

  774. would come

  775. upon us

  776. would fill

  777. us ever

  778. more each

  779. and every

  780. day

  781. Lord let

  782. us never

  783. be satisfied

  784. that we

  785. have been

  786. filled

  787. enough

  788. but may

  789. we continue

  790. to pursue

  791. your presence

  792. in our

  793. lives

  794. and as

  795. we draw

  796. nearer

  797. to you

  798. Lord would

  799. you swell

  800. up within

  801. our hearts

  802. that passion

  803. to serve

  804. you through

  805. others

  806. so Lord we

  807. take a

  808. moment of

  809. stillness

  810. now

  811. and we

  812. ask that

  813. in this

  814. stillness

  815. you would

  816. reveal to

  817. each one

  818. of us

  819. something

  820. of what

  821. you would

  822. have us

  823. do in

  824. our

  825. lives

  826. now

  827. Lord help

  828. us to

  829. think of

  830. the network

  831. of friendships

  832. relationships

  833. whether that

  834. be friends

  835. family

  836. neighbours

  837. or colleagues

  838. help us

  839. help us to

  840. see those

  841. situations

  842. in which

  843. we can

  844. do

  845. practical

  846. things

  847. Lord

  848. open our

  849. hearts and

  850. our minds

  851. to those

  852. causes that

  853. you would

  854. have us

  855. engage

  856. whether that

  857. involves

  858. campaigning

  859. writing

  860. letters

  861. Lord

  862. maybe

  863. there

  864. is a

  865. specific

  866. way

  867. in which

  868. you

  869. would

  870. have

  871. us

  872. serve

  873. you

  874. maybe

  875. there

  876. is a

  877. particular

  878. cause

  879. that you

  880. would lay

  881. on our

  882. hearts

  883. to pray

  884. for

  885. Lord we

  886. ask that

  887. now and

  888. in the

  889. time to

  890. come

  891. you would

  892. open us

  893. up to

  894. those

  895. opportunities

  896. and that

  897. you would

  898. embolden

  899. us

  900. to do

  901. everything

  902. we can

  903. with our

  904. time and

  905. our energy

  906. in service

  907. of your

  908. kingdom

  909. may we

  910. not rest

  911. until that

  912. kingdom comes

  913. in all its

  914. fullness

  915. in Jesus

  916. name

  917. Amen

  918. eth

  919. how

  920. about
