  1. Jesus said, come and follow me.

  2. It was 30 years ago, almost to the day, that I had a conversation with Jeff.

  3. Jeff was a builder.

  4. He was also a youth leader at the church where I grew up on the Isle of Wight.

  5. And it was the summer 1994.

  6. I'd just graduated and I was about to start my first job as a youth worker in Billericay in Essex.

  7. And in the summer between finishing college and starting my new job,

  8. I was asked if I would go and be chaplain to this boys' brigade camp,

  9. which our church was involved with.

  10. And so I was very happy to help out with that.

  11. Jeff and his wife June were youth leaders in the church where I grew up.

  12. And every Sunday evening, they would open their home.

  13. And myself, along with quite a large number of teenagers, would fill their front room.

  14. We would drink all their tea, eat all their chocolate biscuits, and occasionally do some Bible study.

  15. But it was the summer of 1994.

  16. And the camp that I'd been involved with was just coming to an end.

  17. And we were driving back in Jeff's van.

  18. We had some of the camping stuff in the back of the van.

  19. Jeff was driving.

  20. I was sat there in the passenger seat.

  21. We were driving from Swanage in Dorset back to the Isle of Wight.

  22. And Jeff, who is no longer with us, but Jeff and I had this conversation about faith, about ministry, about youth work.

  23. He knew I was about to start as a youth worker.

  24. And he knew that it was in the very early stages of me trying to work out what God was saying to me about the rest of my life.

  25. And he knew that I felt that that probably meant that I was going to become a minister at some point.

  26. And I'll never forget what Jeff said to me.

  27. These weren't his exact words, but it went more or less like this.

  28. He said, really, Russell, whether you become a minister or a youth worker, or like me, you're a builder, just as a Christian, it all really boils down to one thing.

  29. We've got to tell people about Jesus.

  30. Now, that was a conversation that took place 30 years ago, and I still remember it.

  31. And I'm going to be honest, I don't remember much else about probably the many things that Jeff and his wife, Jim, would have said to us over the years of being in the youth group that they led.

  32. But I think they were probably quite pleased if 30 years later, that was the one and only thing that I remember.

  33. Because it is absolutely true.

  34. It's all about Jesus.

  35. I'm reminded of a vicar who arrived on the first day of the new appointment, and he apparently went into the vestry with the church wardens and said,

  36. I need to tell you now, I've only got three sermons.

  37. The first one is entitled, Come to Jesus.

  38. The second one is entitled, Come Back to Jesus.

  39. And the third one is entitled, Come Closer to Jesus.

  40. But first and last, everything in between, that's what it's about.

  41. Take Jesus out of the gospel and there's no gospel.

  42. It's not about religion.

  43. It's not about rules.

  44. It's not about ritual.

  45. It's about relationship.

  46. With one.

  47. Jesus.

  48. And so we begin with those words,

  49. Come, follow me.

  50. Because that's what it's about.

  51. Following him.

  52. Now, there are lots of other times where Jesus actually said,

  53. Go.

  54. We sent people into places.

  55. That's another sermon.

  56. But right now, we're thinking of these words,

  57. right at the beginning of his ministry,

  58. as he called ordinary people to follow him,

  59. in that oh so simple, yet so profound way.

  60. Come, follow me.

  61. They're words of invitation.

  62. And they're words of invitation to know something that is so fundamentally true

  63. that we can so easily forget.

  64. And that, actually, in many ways,

  65. this series which we're just beginning is all about.

  66. Jesus said,

  67. The time has come.

  68. The kingdom of God is near.

  69. In other words, that invitation into his presence.

  70. When Jesus says, Come,

  71. he's coming into knowing

  72. his presence.

  73. Knowing that Jesus is,

  74. I was going to say there,

  75. but knowing that Jesus is here.

  76. That there's no place,

  77. no situation,

  78. at any stage of life,

  79. that you will find yourself where he's not already there.

  80. Because that's his promise.

  81. Come and follow me.

  82. Because he's there.

  83. That's absolutely vital.

  84. Whatever situation you might be facing right now,

  85. whether it's good,

  86. bad,

  87. or a mix of the two,

  88. and it probably is,

  89. whatever you might be hoping for

  90. or living in fear of,

  91. you're not alone.

  92. He's with you.

  93. And that invitation,

  94. and it's a daily one

  95. that we need to hear

  96. and be reminded of,

  97. to come follow me,

  98. is the invitation that reminds us

  99. that there is no place,

  100. no situation,

  101. no set of circumstances

  102. that you will ever find yourselves in

  103. where he is not already present.

  104. The kingdom of God is near,

  105. is at hand.

  106. And it is knowing his presence

  107. that makes all the difference.

  108. Apparently,

  109. Wellington once said of Napoleon,

  110. his presence on the battlefield

  111. is like that,

  112. more than that,

  113. of 40,000 other soldiers.

  114. such was the presence,

  115. the charisma,

  116. the power of that one individual

  117. that he had such an impact.

  118. I dare say

  119. we can draw on many other examples

  120. from human history.

  121. But when we're talking about Jesus,

  122. yes, we are talking about human history,

  123. but we are not only talking

  124. about human history,

  125. we are talking about the divine,

  126. the absolute truth,

  127. that which is ultimate and unique,

  128. the author of the entire universe

  129. and the sustainer of it,

  130. the one who has always been there

  131. and always will be,

  132. is there,

  133. is here,

  134. with you.

  135. And those words of Jesus

  136. that say,

  137. come follow me,

  138. are words that remind us

  139. to stay close

  140. to that fundamental promise

  141. that he's present.

  142. It's easy to say that.

  143. It's also very easy

  144. to forget that reality.

  145. And,

  146. in many ways,

  147. discipleship is about

  148. finding ways

  149. of sustaining that awareness

  150. because it can be so challenging.

  151. sustaining and growing

  152. and growing in that awareness

  153. that Jesus is always there with you.

  154. Because when you know

  155. that you are in his presence,

  156. you act differently.

  157. We do.

  158. When we know

  159. that he's not in some other distant place,

  160. but he's not in heaven

  161. looking down at us,

  162. but he's actually with us

  163. and in us,

  164. when we know that,

  165. we live that out differently.

  166. Our responses are different.

  167. So,

  168. in many ways,

  169. growing as a disciple

  170. of Jesus

  171. is growing

  172. in that knowledge

  173. of his presence.

  174. But that can be the challenge.

  175. Now,

  176. we may perhaps

  177. vary

  178. depending on

  179. how and where

  180. and in what situations

  181. we will find that

  182. particularly challenging.

  183. but I would suggest

  184. to you

  185. that one of the times

  186. where it is most commonly felt

  187. a challenge

  188. is first thing

  189. in the morning.

  190. In that window of time

  191. between waking

  192. and rising,

  193. when we're just

  194. surfacing

  195. to the reality

  196. that we are no longer

  197. asleep

  198. and we are now awake,

  199. and our minds

  200. begin to flood

  201. with all the many things

  202. that we are facing

  203. either in that day

  204. or over the next few days.

  205. They might be

  206. long-term things,

  207. they might be

  208. immediate-term things,

  209. but as we gradually

  210. wake up,

  211. so more

  212. and more

  213. of those things

  214. in the words

  215. of C.S. Lewis

  216. come rushing at us

  217. like wild animals.

  218. And our task,

  219. as C.S. Lewis

  220. put it,

  221. first thing

  222. in the day,

  223. is to push

  224. those thoughts

  225. away

  226. and to focus

  227. on the presence

  228. of Jesus.

  229. How do we do that?

  230. I'm not going to suggest

  231. that there's a

  232. simple formula to it,

  233. but some of the things

  234. we're going to be looking at

  235. over the next few weeks

  236. will be thinking

  237. about some strategies

  238. and some things

  239. that we can do

  240. about that.

  241. But one thing

  242. I have found

  243. that works

  244. for me

  245. is as much

  246. as possible

  247. to try not

  248. to go,

  249. if we can,

  250. try not to go

  251. to screens

  252. first thing.

  253. I can't remember

  254. where I came across

  255. this some while ago,

  256. but the principle

  257. of Scripture

  258. before screens

  259. is a good one.

  260. sometimes it's not

  261. necessarily possible

  262. because if your diary,

  263. your calendar's

  264. on the screen,

  265. you need to check

  266. if you've got to be

  267. somewhere,

  268. you might need

  269. to grab that screen.

  270. But the point

  271. is quite simple.

  272. The longer

  273. we are looking

  274. at a screen

  275. first thing

  276. in the morning,

  277. whether that's

  278. the phone,

  279. iPad,

  280. laptop,

  281. whatever,

  282. it's not going

  283. to help

  284. those thoughts

  285. that come rushing

  286. at us first thing,

  287. that take us

  288. in so many directions.

  289. And if,

  290. if,

  291. if we can push

  292. that back

  293. and resist it

  294. first thing,

  295. and instead

  296. turn to some

  297. words of Scripture,

  298. it hasn't got

  299. to be lots,

  300. we're not talking

  301. about whole chapters,

  302. although that can

  303. be a really helpful

  304. thing,

  305. but the point

  306. is,

  307. is if we can

  308. make the start

  309. of the day,

  310. that time

  311. of stillness

  312. as we

  313. invite God

  314. to remind us

  315. that we are

  316. not alone,

  317. it can make

  318. all the difference.

  319. Come,

  320. follow me,

  321. says Jesus.

  322. Know that the

  323. kingdom

  324. is at hand.

  325. Of course,

  326. as Jesus says,

  327. come,

  328. follow me,

  329. let's remember

  330. to come back

  331. to what we

  332. were thinking

  333. about right

  334. at the start

  335. of our service

  336. this morning.

  337. Those words,

  338. come,

  339. follow me,

  340. are all about

  341. decision making.

  342. Choosing to

  343. follow Jesus

  344. is the biggest

  345. and most

  346. foundational decision

  347. you will ever

  348. make.

  349. Don't be tempted

  350. to think otherwise.

  351. because if you

  352. unpack the

  353. implications

  354. of accepting

  355. Jesus for

  356. everything that

  357. he claims to

  358. be as true,

  359. it shifts

  360. everything.

  361. Right through

  362. from whether

  363. you will marry

  364. somebody to

  365. who you will

  366. marry to

  367. decisions about

  368. children,

  369. right the way

  370. through to the

  371. most mundane,

  372. ordinary decisions

  373. that we make

  374. every day of

  375. our lives.

  376. And everything

  377. in between.

  378. All of those

  379. big decisions,

  380. little decisions,

  381. medium sized

  382. decisions,

  383. directly or

  384. indirectly will

  385. be shaped and

  386. moulded by the

  387. most foundational

  388. decision that

  389. you can ever

  390. make.

  391. And that is

  392. whether we

  393. follow Jesus.

  394. And it's for

  395. that reason that

  396. we need to

  397. remember that

  398. making the

  399. decision to

  400. follow Jesus

  401. is not just

  402. a one moment

  403. in time thing.

  404. Jesus says

  405. repent,

  406. meaning turn

  407. around and

  408. believe the

  409. good news.

  410. It's about

  411. decisions.

  412. many years

  413. ago there

  414. was a

  415. fisherman

  416. by a

  417. lake

  418. who

  419. always

  420. seemed

  421. to

  422. catch

  423. way

  424. more

  425. fish

  426. than

  427. any

  428. other

  429. local

  430. fisherman.

  431. And nobody

  432. could ever

  433. quite work

  434. out how

  435. he did

  436. it.

  437. One morning

  438. he was just

  439. loading up

  440. his boat,

  441. getting his

  442. nets ready

  443. and he was

  444. just about

  445. to set

  446. off,

  447. when a

  448. stranger

  449. by the

  450. shore

  451. said,

  452. do you

  453. mind if I

  454. come with

  455. you today?

  456. a fisherman

  457. who was a

  458. man of

  459. few words

  460. nodded and

  461. said,

  462. sure,

  463. come on

  464. board.

  465. They went

  466. across to

  467. the other

  468. side of

  469. the lake,

  470. the fisherman

  471. didn't say

  472. a word to

  473. this stranger.

  474. Eventually he

  475. stopped his

  476. boat.

  477. He made

  478. his way to

  479. a wooden

  480. box and

  481. lifted up

  482. the lid and

  483. pulled out

  484. a stick of

  485. dynamite.

  486. he lit

  487. the fuse,

  488. he waited

  489. a few

  490. moments and

  491. he threw

  492. it as

  493. far as he

  494. possibly could

  495. into the

  496. water.

  497. Kaboom!

  498. Thousands

  499. of fish

  500. made their

  501. way to the

  502. surface,

  503. threw his

  504. nets and

  505. pulled them

  506. in.

  507. Which point

  508. the stranger

  509. pulled out

  510. an ID card

  511. one.

  512. He said,

  513. I'm the

  514. game warden

  515. and you

  516. are well

  517. and truly

  518. under arrest.

  519. The fisherman

  520. said nothing.

  521. He just

  522. carried on

  523. bringing in

  524. the fish,

  525. eventually

  526. reached down

  527. to the

  528. box,

  529. picked out

  530. another

  531. stick of

  532. dynamite,

  533. lit the

  534. fuse,

  535. waited a

  536. few seconds

  537. and gave

  538. it to

  539. the game

  540. warden

  541. and looked

  542. at him

  543. and said,

  544. are you

  545. going to

  546. sit there

  547. or are

  548. we going

  549. to fish?

  550. There are

  551. some

  552. moments

  553. where you

  554. have to

  555. make a

  556. decision.

  557. And it

  558. seems to

  559. be that

  560. when it

  561. comes to

  562. making a

  563. decision

  564. about God,

  565. we're very

  566. good at

  567. deceiving

  568. ourselves

  569. into thinking

  570. that can

  571. be put

  572. on hold.

  573. How often

  574. will you

  575. meet somebody

  576. who will

  577. say,

  578. well,

  579. I'm just

  580. agnostic.

  581. I don't

  582. really know

  583. and I

  584. don't

  585. think

  586. it's

  587. possible

  588. to

  589. know.

  590. And

  591. sometimes

  592. people

  593. say,

  594. no,

  595. I'm

  596. fine

  597. with

  598. that.

  599. Don't

  600. say that

  601. to

  602. discredit

  603. anybody's

  604. integrity,

  605. but there

  606. are some

  607. decisions,

  608. rather like

  609. the stick

  610. of dynamite,

  611. that have

  612. to be

  613. made.

  614. Jesus

  615. is either

  616. who he

  617. claims to

  618. be or

  619. he's

  620. not.

  621. and if

  622. he is,

  623. we need

  624. to do

  625. something

  626. about

  627. him.

  628. Decision

  629. making

  630. is at

  631. the very

  632. core of

  633. being a

  634. disciple of

  635. Jesus.

  636. But

  637. it's not

  638. just a

  639. one-time

  640. decision.

  641. of course

  642. there is

  643. that,

  644. perhaps that

  645. moment where

  646. we make

  647. that change

  648. from not

  649. being a

  650. follower of

  651. Jesus to

  652. being a

  653. follower of

  654. Jesus.

  655. But let's

  656. not think

  657. that we

  658. can look

  659. back and

  660. think that

  661. it was a

  662. one-point

  663. frozen-in-time

  664. moment.

  665. Because

  666. those words

  667. come,

  668. follow me

  669. are words

  670. that come

  671. our way

  672. every single

  673. day in

  674. every decision

  675. we make.

  676. And our

  677. calling is to

  678. work out

  679. how,

  680. knowing the

  681. presence of

  682. Jesus with

  683. us,

  684. we respond

  685. to every

  686. decision so

  687. that we are

  688. following him

  689. in every

  690. decision that

  691. we make.

  692. And lastly,

  693. let's remember

  694. that what we're

  695. talking about

  696. here is not

  697. someone else's

  698. decision.

  699. It's a

  700. decision that

  701. comes to

  702. each and

  703. every one

  704. of us.

  705. it's too

  706. easy for us

  707. to think

  708. that the

  709. gospel is

  710. somebody else's

  711. good news.

  712. That it's a

  713. message that

  714. was intended

  715. for somebody

  716. else but

  717. not for

  718. me.

  719. See,

  720. notice the

  721. immediacy of

  722. the response

  723. that those

  724. first

  725. disciples

  726. make to

  727. Jesus.

  728. Those

  729. first followers

  730. of Jesus,

  731. there's no

  732. hanging around.

  733. they just

  734. leave their

  735. boats and

  736. nets behind

  737. and go.

  738. We don't

  739. need to be

  740. fishermen to

  741. follow Jesus

  742. and we may

  743. not be talking

  744. about laying

  745. down boats

  746. and nets,

  747. but all of us

  748. will have

  749. something.

  750. And again,

  751. all of us

  752. will have

  753. something every

  754. day of our

  755. lives that

  756. we are called

  757. to lay down

  758. in order to

  759. follow him.

  760. And our

  761. question is,

  762. what is that?

  763. And that

  764. will probably

  765. look a little

  766. bit different

  767. for each and

  768. every one of

  769. us because

  770. we are all

  771. different.

  772. But we

  773. need to

  774. remember that

  775. this challenge,

  776. this invitation,

  777. come follow

  778. me, with

  779. Jesus at the

  780. centre is

  781. something for

  782. each and

  783. every one of

  784. us with

  785. absolutely no

  786. exception.

  787. You see,

  788. those first

  789. followers of

  790. Jesus knew

  791. that Jesus

  792. was speaking

  793. to them

  794. personally.

  795. Let me

  796. share one

  797. last story

  798. with you

  799. before we

  800. come to

  801. pray.

  802. There's a

  803. story about

  804. Bishop Taylor

  805. Smith,

  806. who was

  807. a former

  808. chaplain

  809. general to

  810. the forces.

  811. He had a

  812. conversation

  813. one day

  814. with a young

  815. man that

  816. went like

  817. this.

  818. Bishop Taylor

  819. Smith said,

  820. when you

  821. think about

  822. the cross

  823. of Christ,

  824. what do

  825. you see?

  826. The young

  827. man thought

  828. and replied

  829. to him,

  830. I see

  831. Christ and

  832. I see

  833. two thieves

  834. crucified

  835. either side

  836. of him.

  837. The bishop

  838. replied,

  839. what else

  840. do you

  841. see?

  842. The young

  843. man thought

  844. some more

  845. and he

  846. said,

  847. I see

  848. the soldiers

  849. gambling.

  850. Bishop said

  851. this,

  852. if that is

  853. all you

  854. see,

  855. I think

  856. you will

  857. have trouble

  858. with the

  859. Christian

  860. life.

  861. When I

  862. see the

  863. cross,

  864. with all

  865. that,

  866. I see

  867. old

  868. Bishop

  869. Taylor

  870. Smith.

  871. I was

  872. crucified

  873. with

  874. Christ.

  875. These

  876. words,

  877. come,

  878. follow me,

  879. are close

  880. up and

  881. personal.

  882. As close

  883. up and

  884. intimate as

  885. it can

  886. possibly

  887. get.

  888. So as

  889. we come

  890. to pray

  891. now,

  892. let's ask

  893. God to

  894. bring those

  895. words close

  896. up and

  897. personal to

  898. us,

  899. that we

  900. might bring

  901. our lives

  902. closer to

  903. him and

  904. to grow

  905. in him.

  906. So let's

  907. pray.

  908. Lord God,

  909. we thank

  910. you that

  911. you come

  912. to us in

  913. Jesus,

  914. not to

  915. be religious,

  916. not to

  917. engage in

  918. rules or

  919. ritual,

  920. but to

  921. know you

  922. and to

  923. know that

  924. we are

  925. known and

  926. loved by

  927. you.

  928. Lord,

  929. as we

  930. think of

  931. our lives

  932. now and

  933. we think

  934. of the

  935. mess we

  936. make,

  937. the

  938. mistakes we

  939. make and

  940. how we

  941. get it

  942. wrong over

  943. and over

  944. again,

  945. we just

  946. bring the

  947. reality of

  948. our lives

  949. before you

  950. now.

  951. We confess

  952. the reality

  953. of our

  954. sin and

  955. brokenness.

  956. forgiveness.

  957. And we

  958. ask of your

  959. forgiveness.

  960. Lord,

  961. we thank

  962. you that

  963. because of

  964. Christ and

  965. his death

  966. and resurrection,

  967. we may

  968. know that

  969. we are

  970. forgiven.

  971. So help

  972. us to

  973. walk in

  974. freedom.

  975. Help us

  976. to follow

  977. you in

  978. our

  979. everyday

  980. lives.

  981. To know

  982. and to

  983. grow in

  984. your living

  985. presence with

  986. us.

  987. Help us

  988. to know

  989. that you

  990. go before

  991. us in

  992. every situation

  993. that we

  994. face tomorrow,

  995. this week,

  996. and in the

  997. time to

  998. come.

  999. And as we

  1000. do so,

  1001. help us

  1002. to grow

  1003. more and

  1004. more and

  1005. more into

  1006. the people

  1007. that you

  1008. want us

  1009. to be.

  1010. In

  1011. Jesus'

  1012. name.

  1013. Amen.
