  1. We're called to a whole life of being with Jesus and growing with Jesus.

  2. Paul sums that up there by saying,

  3. Be transformed by the renewal of your mind.

  4. Then he goes on to that description of what that looks like

  5. as our minds are renewed in Christ.

  6. Woody Allen, who is nearly 89 years old, but a few years ago, said this,

  7. My relationship with death remains the same.

  8. I'm strongly against it.

  9. All I can do is wait for it.

  10. He went on to say a little bit more.

  11. He said, One must have one's delusions to live.

  12. If you look at life too honestly and too clearly,

  13. life does become unbearable because it's a pretty grim enterprise.

  14. Very often when we hear some of the words of Woody Allen,

  15. I find I both laugh and cry at the same time.

  16. And I think that's very much the case there.

  17. But I think those words possibly capture the way many, many people regard life and death.

  18. That death is something that we can do is just wait for it to happen.

  19. Perhaps engage ourselves with some kind of preoccupation in the meantime.

  20. But you know, there couldn't be a greater contrast with what it is to have life in Christ,

  21. to live in Christ.

  22. As we said, as we thought about last week,

  23. that, as John Mark Comer puts it in this book, I think really quite brilliantly,

  24. he says that being a Christian is not about getting into heaven,

  25. but rather it's about getting heaven into you.

  26. That means, yes, it's about making a commitment to Jesus,

  27. but it's not just a one-point-in-time commitment.

  28. It's a lifelong thing.

  29. That means there's never any time for us to get bored as being Christians.

  30. Because it's a lifelong process of having decided to follow Jesus,

  31. to knowing him more and more and more,

  32. to growing in him, him in us and us in him.

  33. I'm going to put some things on the screen this morning.

  34. I'm going to just start by giving you this image.

  35. I don't know if you've ever done this,

  36. but if you put a white rose in food colouring,

  37. the rose eventually changes colour.

  38. Now, I'm not a scientist,

  39. but you can kind of work out roughly what happens there.

  40. The dye becomes absorbed,

  41. and so it changes the colour of that rose.

  42. The question is,

  43. does that happen because the rose is in the dye,

  44. or because the dye is in the rose?

  45. See, following Jesus is a life of being transformed.

  46. It's about being in Christ,

  47. and Christ in you.

  48. And there may be that point in time,

  49. when perhaps it's a point of decision,

  50. but let's not think for one moment

  51. that the Christian gospel and our response to it

  52. is about just that one moment,

  53. but rather it is a whole life process,

  54. calling, invitation,

  55. of being in Christ and growing in Christ

  56. and knowing his presence

  57. more and more and more and more and more,

  58. and it doesn't stop.

  59. But being with Jesus,

  60. becoming Christ-like,

  61. it doesn't just happen.

  62. It doesn't just happen.

  63. And Paul,

  64. not just here,

  65. but elsewhere as well in his letters,

  66. describes this Christian life of discipleship.

  67. It is one of being transformed,

  68. but it's a lifelong process,

  69. and it does call on us

  70. to make an effort.

  71. Now,

  72. as we were thinking about last week,

  73. when Paul talks about,

  74. you know,

  75. work out your salvation,

  76. it doesn't mean work for salvation.

  77. It's not about

  78. earning salvation.

  79. salvation is a free gift from God.

  80. There is nothing you or I can do

  81. to earn it.

  82. But as we respond to that free gift,

  83. so we are called

  84. to work it out,

  85. and that takes effort.

  86. And as we read this list

  87. that we had just a moment ago

  88. of what that Christian life looks like,

  89. it's challenging stuff.

  90. It doesn't just happen.

  91. And so we're called,

  92. in response to the grace of God,

  93. that unconditional grace of God,

  94. to work that out,

  95. to be transformed,

  96. Paul says,

  97. by the renewal of your mind.

  98. Now,

  99. that word,

  100. being transformed,

  101. can too easily be glossed over.

  102. And what I want to do now

  103. is just spend a few moments

  104. just unpacking it a little bit more,

  105. thinking about what it actually might mean.

  106. And I would suggest

  107. that perhaps the best way

  108. of starting that

  109. is to think of words

  110. that are fairly similar,

  111. but not quite the same.

  112. So he talks about

  113. be transformed

  114. by the renewal of your mind.

  115. And there are a number of words

  116. that have the second part

  117. of that word,

  118. transformed,

  119. transformed in it,

  120. which are similar,

  121. but are not quite the same.

  122. The first one is this.

  123. It's coming up on the screen.

  124. To be formed.

  125. You see,

  126. that's the second part

  127. of the word,

  128. transformed.

  129. To be formed.

  130. And people will often

  131. talk about

  132. spiritual formation.

  133. Now,

  134. I think one of the really helpful

  135. and interesting insights

  136. in John Mark Comer's book,

  137. Practicing the Way,

  138. is he says

  139. that

  140. spiritual formation

  141. is not just

  142. a Christian thing.

  143. Spiritual formation

  144. is a human thing.

  145. And it's part

  146. of our human makeup

  147. that we are in the business

  148. of spiritual transformation.

  149. Why?

  150. Sorry,

  151. spiritual formation.

  152. Why?

  153. Because every single one of us

  154. as a human being

  155. are spiritual beings.

  156. Whether you believe

  157. in God or not,

  158. you can be an atheist,

  159. but your life

  160. is still a process

  161. of spiritual formation.

  162. Simply because

  163. we are spiritual beings.

  164. We are not just

  165. flesh and blood,

  166. but there is this

  167. spiritual dimension

  168. about us.

  169. And it doesn't matter

  170. who you are,

  171. your life

  172. always has been

  173. and always will be

  174. during your time

  175. on earth,

  176. a process

  177. of spiritual

  178. formation.

  179. Whether you are

  180. Mother Teresa,

  181. Martin Luther King,

  182. Adolf Hitler,

  183. Vladimir Putin,

  184. dear old

  185. Donald Trump

  186. even,

  187. your life is a process

  188. of spiritual formation

  189. for better

  190. or for worse.

  191. and dare I say

  192. every single one of us,

  193. it will be a combination

  194. of the better

  195. and the worse,

  196. the good and the not so good.

  197. Every time we make a decision,

  198. we are engaging

  199. whether we are aware of it

  200. in a process

  201. of being spiritually formed.

  202. Every interaction

  203. with another human being,

  204. every time we engage

  205. with the culture

  206. in which we live

  207. or we encounter

  208. a different culture

  209. for the first time,

  210. we are in the process

  211. of being formed

  212. spiritually.

  213. So the question,

  214. therefore,

  215. is not whether

  216. or not

  217. you are ever doing

  218. spiritual formation,

  219. you are.

  220. The question,

  221. rather,

  222. is what are you being

  223. spiritually formed into?

  224. Now there's a question.

  225. Take a moment

  226. and just reflect on it.

  227. I'm not going to ask you

  228. to turn to the person

  229. next to you and discuss it.

  230. Think about it

  231. just for a few moments.

  232. As you just take

  233. a very quick flash

  234. glance at your life

  235. up until this point

  236. and right now

  237. and what's going on it.

  238. What are you being

  239. formed into

  240. spiritually?

  241. Your whole life

  242. has been

  243. and will continue

  244. to be a process

  245. of spiritual formation.

  246. We do not live

  247. in a spiritual vacuum.

  248. Now,

  249. Western culture

  250. perhaps resists

  251. the idea

  252. that there is

  253. such a thing

  254. as absolute truth

  255. because our culture

  256. says that

  257. actually no one has,

  258. nobody can claim

  259. access to absolute truth

  260. and therefore

  261. we should always

  262. be open-minded

  263. about everything.

  264. Now,

  265. at face value

  266. that can seem

  267. quite a good thing.

  268. Nobody likes people

  269. that walk around

  270. being judgmental.

  271. But there's something

  272. quite misleading

  273. about it

  274. because the danger

  275. there is it implies

  276. a relativism

  277. that says

  278. there's no such thing

  279. as good or bad,

  280. it's just what

  281. you want it to be.

  282. It was G.K. Chesterton

  283. that many years ago

  284. said

  285. the point of having

  286. an open mind

  287. is rather like

  288. the point of having

  289. an open mouth.

  290. Eventually,

  291. it should close in

  292. on something

  293. and something

  294. that's good for you.

  295. So let's not make

  296. too much of a virtue

  297. of the culture

  298. of open-mindedness.

  299. Yes,

  300. we should listen,

  301. that is vital.

  302. We need to listen

  303. to others

  304. and to one another.

  305. We should do that.

  306. But when it comes

  307. to being formed,

  308. we need to exercise

  309. a sense of discernment

  310. and critical judgment

  311. as to what is good

  312. and what is not good.

  313. Because God does not

  314. just want us

  315. to be spiritually formed,

  316. that will happen anyway,

  317. including in a world

  318. that is broken

  319. and hurting.

  320. But rather,

  321. God calls us

  322. to be formed

  323. in a particular way

  324. and we will come

  325. on to that

  326. in just a moment.

  327. So Paul talks

  328. about not being formed.

  329. He actually says,

  330. do not,

  331. let's have the next one up,

  332. do not be conformed.

  333. Do not conform,

  334. he says,

  335. to the patterns

  336. of this world.

  337. What does that mean?

  338. Well, quite simply,

  339. to conform

  340. means that

  341. your spiritual formation

  342. is one of where

  343. you listen

  344. and just go along

  345. with the crowd.

  346. and that can be

  347. a very dangerous thing.

  348. There's an old story

  349. that's told

  350. about a group of eggs.

  351. They were chickens' eggs

  352. except for one of them,

  353. which was an eagle's egg.

  354. I don't know how

  355. the eagle's egg

  356. made its way in

  357. among the others,

  358. but it did.

  359. And they all hatched

  360. at roughly the same time

  361. and all the chicks

  362. grew up together.

  363. And as these chicks

  364. matured into birds,

  365. what you had

  366. was a group

  367. of chickens

  368. and an eagle.

  369. And they all

  370. clucked around

  371. on the ground

  372. all day long,

  373. including the eagle.

  374. And you can imagine

  375. how strange this looked

  376. to see this

  377. extraordinary,

  378. beautiful bird,

  379. this eagle,

  380. clucking around,

  381. eating grain

  382. off the ground,

  383. following the same

  384. movements

  385. as his chicken friends.

  386. This went on

  387. for a long time

  388. and then one day

  389. another eagle

  390. came flying over

  391. the place

  392. where these birds lived.

  393. they all looked up

  394. and gasped

  395. in wonder,

  396. including the eagle

  397. on the ground.

  398. And having spent

  399. his whole life

  400. imitating those

  401. around him,

  402. he looked at his own

  403. wings and he looked

  404. at the wings of the eagle

  405. flying above

  406. and he just began

  407. to stretch out

  408. his own wings

  409. and looked at the eagle

  410. above and just thought

  411. to himself,

  412. maybe,

  413. just maybe.

  414. And he began

  415. to sort of walk around

  416. stretching its wings

  417. and began to say

  418. to his chicken friends,

  419. I'm going to fly.

  420. They laughed at him

  421. and said,

  422. don't be ridiculous.

  423. You weren't born

  424. to fly.

  425. You're one of us.

  426. Tragically,

  427. he never flew.

  428. Do not conform,

  429. says Paul,

  430. to the patterns

  431. of this world,

  432. but be transformed

  433. by the renewal

  434. of your mind.

  435. What does that look like?

  436. Let's have the third word

  437. up that's similar.

  438. To be informed.

  439. Now,

  440. to be informed

  441. is a good thing.

  442. To be informed

  443. means that we know

  444. what's going on

  445. and in fact,

  446. as we read through

  447. these words of Paul,

  448. he talks about,

  449. he gives us information

  450. as to what it looks like

  451. to be transformed.

  452. He says things like,

  453. never be lacking in zeal,

  454. but keep your spiritual fervour,

  455. serving the Lord,

  456. be joyful in hope,

  457. patient in affliction,

  458. faithful in prayer,

  459. share with the Lord's people

  460. who are in need,

  461. practice hospitality,

  462. bless those who persecute you,

  463. bless and do not curse,

  464. rejoice with those who rejoice,

  465. mourn with those who mourn,

  466. live in harmony with one another.

  467. So it goes on.

  468. We have a list

  469. which gives us information.

  470. But, you know,

  471. to be informed

  472. is not the same thing

  473. as being transformed.

  474. We need to be informed.

  475. Information is

  476. the front porch

  477. of understanding.

  478. And that is what,

  479. you know,

  480. reading the Bible,

  481. giving us information

  482. is an important part

  483. of the whole process

  484. of being transformed.

  485. But,

  486. just information,

  487. if we just go to the Bible

  488. for information,

  489. it is a dangerous thing.

  490. You might know

  491. the information

  492. of the Bible

  493. inside out

  494. and back to front

  495. and never be transformed.

  496. You might know

  497. the Old Testament

  498. so well

  499. that you can not only

  500. name the,

  501. name the Uriah,

  502. the Hittite's

  503. second cousin,

  504. twice removed's wife,

  505. but also be able

  506. to give me

  507. her inside leg measurements

  508. in Hebrew.

  509. But that doesn't mean

  510. to say you'll be transformed.

  511. Now,

  512. Bible reading,

  513. I mentioned it earlier

  514. this morning

  515. in the service,

  516. is a really,

  517. really important thing.

  518. The danger can be

  519. that we approach it

  520. as an information

  521. process

  522. alone.

  523. And the danger

  524. can be with that

  525. is that we think,

  526. I've got to speed

  527. my way through this,

  528. I'm going to do

  529. my Bible reading today

  530. and read it

  531. as quickly as possible.

  532. Great,

  533. done it,

  534. pew,

  535. I can get on

  536. with my life.

  537. Or we can read it

  538. and think,

  539. I've got to get

  540. as much information

  541. as possible

  542. through this.

  543. And it's for this reason

  544. why I'm not of the opinion

  545. that the starting point

  546. in regular Bible reading

  547. should be the quantity

  548. that we read.

  549. In fact,

  550. I would say the opposite.

  551. It is far more helpful,

  552. I would suggest,

  553. to actually make

  554. our habit

  555. of approaching Scripture

  556. not so much

  557. in terms of

  558. how much can I read today,

  559. but how much can I

  560. immerse myself

  561. in this today

  562. and to that end

  563. a shorter quantity

  564. of Scripture

  565. might,

  566. might

  567. be a more sensible way

  568. of doing that.

  569. The point is,

  570. is that

  571. if we read the Bible

  572. just to be informed,

  573. yes,

  574. that's good,

  575. it's helpful,

  576. but it doesn't take us

  577. to where we need to be.

  578. So might possibly

  579. we be talking

  580. not about information,

  581. but the next one

  582. is being reformed.

  583. Now being reformed

  584. is good

  585. and when we read

  586. that list,

  587. again,

  588. we read that list

  589. in Romans 12

  590. where Paul gives us

  591. a description,

  592. the information

  593. of what it looks like,

  594. you could say,

  595. well yes,

  596. bless those who persecute you,

  597. bless and do not curse,

  598. rejoice with those

  599. who rejoice,

  600. mourn with those

  601. who mourn,

  602. live in harmony

  603. with one another,

  604. do not be proud,

  605. be willing to associate

  606. with people of low position,

  607. do not be conceited,

  608. do not repay evil

  609. for evil,

  610. all of these

  611. different things

  612. we might say

  613. are hallmarks

  614. of a reformed character.

  615. Being reformed

  616. is no bad thing,

  617. but it doesn't

  618. go far enough

  619. because it means

  620. taking something

  621. and changing

  622. aspects of it,

  623. but that,

  624. even that,

  625. is not what

  626. Paul talks about.

  627. Rather,

  628. he says,

  629. be transformed,

  630. be transformed.

  631. So,

  632. if we've thought

  633. a bit about

  634. what being transformed

  635. isn't,

  636. what does

  637. it actually mean?

  638. Well,

  639. of course,

  640. the New Testament

  641. was not written

  642. in English,

  643. it was written

  644. in Greek

  645. and the word

  646. for transformed

  647. is metamorpho

  648. in the New Testament

  649. Greek.

  650. It appears

  651. on two other

  652. occasions

  653. in the New Testament

  654. which are not

  655. always translated

  656. in exactly

  657. the same way.

  658. But this is important

  659. and relevant

  660. and helpful

  661. in a very practical

  662. way,

  663. I would suggest,

  664. for us to understand.

  665. When Paul says

  666. be transformed,

  667. he has a very

  668. particular thing

  669. in mind

  670. and in order

  671. for us to really

  672. get to that,

  673. it is helpful

  674. to look at

  675. these two other

  676. occasions

  677. where the same

  678. word,

  679. metamorpho,

  680. appears within

  681. the New Testament.

  682. First,

  683. let's look at

  684. the Gospels

  685. because we find

  686. in both

  687. Matthew and

  688. Mark's account

  689. of a very

  690. particular time

  691. in the life

  692. of Jesus,

  693. the same

  694. word appears

  695. and it's the

  696. story of what

  697. is called

  698. the Transfiguration.

  699. Let me read

  700. to you

  701. Mark's

  702. account

  703. of that

  704. event.

  705. After six

  706. days,

  707. Jesus took

  708. Peter,

  709. James and

  710. John with

  711. him and

  712. led them

  713. up a

  714. mountain

  715. where they

  716. were all

  717. alone.

  718. There he

  719. was

  720. transfigured,

  721. hold on to

  722. that word,

  723. there Jesus

  724. was transfigured

  725. before them.

  726. His clothes

  727. became dazzling

  728. white,

  729. whiter than

  730. anyone in the

  731. world could

  732. bleach them.

  733. I know that

  734. sounds like a

  735. washing powder

  736. advert,

  737. it's not.

  738. There appeared

  739. before them

  740. Elijah and

  741. Moses who

  742. were talking

  743. with Jesus

  744. and Peter

  745. said to

  746. Jesus,

  747. Rabbi,

  748. it is good

  749. for us to

  750. be here,

  751. let us put

  752. up three

  753. shelters,

  754. one for you,

  755. one for

  756. Moses and

  757. one for

  758. Elijah.

  759. He did

  760. not know

  761. what to

  762. say,

  763. they were

  764. so frightened.

  765. Then a

  766. cloud appeared

  767. and covered

  768. them and a

  769. voice came

  770. from the

  771. cloud,

  772. this is my

  773. son whom

  774. I love,

  775. listen to

  776. him.

  777. suddenly,

  778. when they

  779. looked around

  780. they no

  781. longer saw

  782. anyone with

  783. them except

  784. Jesus.

  785. They were

  786. frightened,

  787. we're told.

  788. They must

  789. have been

  790. terrified.

  791. This dazzling

  792. brightness as

  793. Jesus who

  794. one day would

  795. die and be

  796. raised in

  797. resurrection glory,

  798. they get this

  799. glimpse ahead

  800. of his death

  801. as to what

  802. that resurrection

  803. looks like.

  804. And what

  805. word is used

  806. to describe

  807. it?

  808. Transfiguration

  809. in English.

  810. But in the

  811. New Testament

  812. Greek it is

  813. the very same

  814. word that

  815. Paul uses

  816. when he

  817. says be

  818. transformed.

  819. In other

  820. words, this

  821. New Testament

  822. vision of

  823. transformation

  824. takes us

  825. back to the

  826. transfiguration

  827. or if you

  828. like transformation

  829. because it's

  830. the same

  831. word of

  832. Jesus.

  833. like Jesus

  834. at that

  835. point in

  836. his story,

  837. we have

  838. not yet

  839. died.

  840. But we

  841. are promised

  842. that again

  843. like Jesus

  844. we will be

  845. raised.

  846. Now this

  847. is what we're

  848. talking about

  849. when we're

  850. talking about

  851. not getting

  852. into heaven

  853. but heaven

  854. getting into

  855. you.

  856. We have that

  857. promise that

  858. is like no

  859. other promise

  860. that one day

  861. we won't just

  862. simply drift

  863. off into

  864. some distant

  865. spiritual state

  866. but we will

  867. be given

  868. resurrection

  869. bodies.

  870. We read

  871. about that

  872. in 1

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  873. Corinthians

  874. chapter 15

  875. where Jesus

  876. is described

  877. as the

  878. first fruit

  879. of resurrection.

  880. What comes

  881. after the

  882. first fruit

  883. well that's

  884. you and

  885. me.

  886. And that's

  887. what the

  888. gospel hope

  889. is.

  890. For that

  891. everlasting

  892. life, that

  893. eternal life

  894. when we are

  895. raised forever.

  896. Look at your

  897. hands for one

  898. moment.

  899. Look at the

  900. fingerprints on

  901. those hands.

  902. Your fingertips,

  903. sorry.

  904. The contours,

  905. the pattern is

  906. unique to you.

  907. Embedded in

  908. your body is

  909. that unique

  910. DNA.

  911. You and

  912. only you

  913. will ever be

  914. you.

  915. And that

  916. same body

  917. will be

  918. transformed

  919. according to

  920. the word of

  921. God.

  922. Will be

  923. transfigured

  924. into an

  925. everlasting

  926. body.

  927. you will

  928. still be

  929. the same

  930. person in

  931. resurrection

  932. glory and

  933. yet you

  934. will be

  935. transformed

  936. in a way

  937. that we

  938. can only

  939. imagine.

  940. Except we're

  941. not left

  942. alone to

  943. imagine it.

  944. We're given

  945. God's word

  946. to help us

  947. imagine what

  948. that looks

  949. like.

  950. We have

  951. this story

  952. in the

  953. life of

  954. Jesus where

  955. the disciples

  956. before his

  957. death are

  958. given that

  959. glimpse as

  960. to what

  961. the resurrection

  962. life is

  963. like.

  964. As Jesus

  965. is transfigured

  966. momentarily in

  967. that moment,

  968. but is now

  969. transformed in

  970. his resurrection

  971. glory.

  972. And that

  973. is the

  974. vision that

  975. we are

  976. given to

  977. live our

  978. lives by

  979. now.

  980. Not some

  981. distant,

  982. removed,

  983. otherworldly

  984. thing,

  985. but something

  986. that we can

  987. know right

  988. now in this

  989. bodily existence.

  990. sense.

  991. To be

  992. transformed

  993. means to

  994. know that

  995. reality of

  996. that future

  997. everlasting

  998. promise now

  999. in this

  1000. body.

  1001. Be

  1002. transformed,

  1003. says Paul.

  1004. Latch on to

  1005. that which

  1006. awaits you.

  1007. Now let's

  1008. bring this

  1009. back to

  1010. Paul.

  1011. Because I

  1012. said there's

  1013. another

  1014. incident,

  1015. another

  1016. occasion where

  1017. we find in

  1018. the New

  1019. Testament where

  1020. mention is

  1021. made,

  1022. where the

  1023. same word

  1024. transfigure,

  1025. transform,

  1026. they mean the

  1027. same thing,

  1028. metamorpho,

  1029. which we

  1030. find them

  1031. once again

  1032. on the

  1033. lips of

  1034. Paul.

  1035. And we

  1036. find it in

  1037. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  1038. chapter 3

  1039. and verse

  1040. 18.

  1041. The words

  1042. are on the

  1043. screen.

  1044. And we

  1045. all,

  1046. who with

  1047. unveiled faces

  1048. contemplate the

  1049. Lord's glory,

  1050. are being

  1051. transformed into

  1052. his image

  1053. with ever

  1054. increasing glory

  1055. which comes

  1056. from the

  1057. Lord who

  1058. is the

  1059. Spirit.

  1060. Rather than

  1061. just me read

  1062. and you

  1063. listen,

  1064. let's join in

  1065. saying these

  1066. words together

  1067. because they

  1068. are actually

  1069. for every

  1070. single one

  1071. of us.

  1072. Join with

  1073. me.

  1074. And we

  1075. all,

  1076. who with

  1077. unveiled

  1078. faces,

  1079. contemplate the

  1080. Lord's glory,

  1081. are being

  1082. transformed into

  1083. his image

  1084. with ever

  1085. increasing glory

  1086. which comes

  1087. from the

  1088. Lord who

  1089. is the

  1090. Spirit.

  1091. To be

  1092. transformed,

  1093. not conformed

  1094. to the

  1095. patterns of

  1096. this world,

  1097. but to be

  1098. transformed

  1099. means to

  1100. know now

  1101. that which

  1102. is promised

  1103. for the

  1104. future.

  1105. And when

  1106. Paul calls

  1107. us to

  1108. know this,

  1109. he calls

  1110. us to

  1111. lay hold

  1112. of it,

  1113. to know

  1114. that future

  1115. vision which

  1116. becomes the

  1117. reality now.

  1118. This is getting

  1119. heaven into

  1120. you.

  1121. Think of the

  1122. rose in

  1123. the

  1124. die.

  1125. This is

  1126. the calling

  1127. that we

  1128. have to

  1129. absorb this

  1130. stuff, to

  1131. know that we

  1132. are in

  1133. Christ and

  1134. that Christ

  1135. is in

  1136. us.

  1137. And it's

  1138. not just a

  1139. one moment

  1140. thing that

  1141. happens just

  1142. one point in

  1143. time in

  1144. our lives

  1145. at the

  1146. point of

  1147. conversion or

  1148. at any

  1149. other moment,

  1150. but rather it

  1151. is a

  1152. lifelong

  1153. process of

  1154. continually being

  1155. transformed into

  1156. the knowledge of

  1157. that resurrection

  1158. hope that is

  1159. ours.

  1160. Be

  1161. transfigured,

  1162. be

  1163. transformed.

  1164. We're going to

  1165. pray in a

  1166. moment and I

  1167. want to share

  1168. with you one

  1169. last image to

  1170. help us remember

  1171. this.

  1172. And it's a

  1173. story about

  1174. many years ago,

  1175. I think it's a

  1176. fable actually,

  1177. but it's a

  1178. story about a

  1179. man who begged

  1180. and lived

  1181. outside the

  1182. gates of a

  1183. palace.

  1184. He lived in

  1185. rags but one

  1186. day he was

  1187. very excited

  1188. when he saw

  1189. a sign

  1190. inviting

  1191. anybody and

  1192. everybody in

  1193. the whole

  1194. kingdom to

  1195. a royal

  1196. banquet that

  1197. the king was

  1198. putting on.

  1199. But there was

  1200. one condition.

  1201. In order to

  1202. come to the

  1203. banquet you

  1204. had to be

  1205. clothed in

  1206. royal garments.

  1207. Well the man

  1208. looked at the

  1209. rags that he

  1210. lived in and

  1211. begged in.

  1212. And then he

  1213. looked again at

  1214. the invitation.

  1215. And then he

  1216. looked at the

  1217. guards standing

  1218. outside the

  1219. palace gates

  1220. and just

  1221. thought,

  1222. is it worth

  1223. a try?

  1224. So he went

  1225. to the guard

  1226. and he said

  1227. to him,

  1228. sir, I would

  1229. love to come

  1230. to that banquet.

  1231. May I just

  1232. ask a favour?

  1233. May I talk

  1234. to the king?

  1235. The guard

  1236. who'd seen

  1237. this man out

  1238. there every

  1239. day for years

  1240. felt for him

  1241. and so on

  1242. the off chance

  1243. he decided

  1244. to go and

  1245. talk to

  1246. his senior

  1247. who in

  1248. turn had the

  1249. same thought

  1250. and went to

  1251. see somebody

  1252. else, who

  1253. went to see

  1254. somebody else,

  1255. who went to

  1256. see somebody

  1257. else and

  1258. eventually the

  1259. message was

  1260. brought to

  1261. the king

  1262. himself.

  1263. The king's

  1264. heart was

  1265. warmed by the

  1266. story and so

  1267. he invited him

  1268. in.

  1269. The man in

  1270. his rags was

  1271. escorted by

  1272. the guard to

  1273. somebody who

  1274. eventually was

  1275. led to

  1276. somebody else

  1277. and he

  1278. passed through

  1279. room after

  1280. room after

  1281. hallway,

  1282. passed from

  1283. one person

  1284. to another

  1285. and then

  1286. eventually he

  1287. was led to

  1288. a room in

  1289. which the

  1290. king himself

  1291. was sat.

  1292. This man was

  1293. shaking like a

  1294. leaf, could

  1295. barely look at

  1296. the king and

  1297. said, your

  1298. majesty, I

  1299. see the

  1300. invitation to

  1301. everybody to

  1302. your banquet.

  1303. But I

  1304. noticed that it

  1305. says that in

  1306. order to come

  1307. you must

  1308. wear royal

  1309. garments and

  1310. yet I only

  1311. have these

  1312. rags.

  1313. Sir, might

  1314. you be good

  1315. enough to

  1316. lend me some

  1317. of your old

  1318. royal clothes?

  1319. The king

  1320. loved this.

  1321. He loved the

  1322. fact that this

  1323. man felt that

  1324. he could approach

  1325. him.

  1326. He said, I'm

  1327. going to give

  1328. you some of my

  1329. garments.

  1330. He gave

  1331. instruction for

  1332. him to go

  1333. off, be

  1334. taken off and

  1335. to be fitted

  1336. out.

  1337. He was

  1338. brought before

  1339. the king

  1340. dressed in

  1341. the most

  1342. expensive clothes

  1343. that this man

  1344. had ever

  1345. seen.

  1346. The king

  1347. said to him,

  1348. you are now

  1349. welcome to

  1350. come to my

  1351. banquet.

  1352. And furthermore

  1353. you may keep

  1354. these clothes,

  1355. but I want you

  1356. to know this,

  1357. they will never

  1358. ever wear

  1359. out.

  1360. man.

  1361. Well, the

  1362. man was

  1363. excited about

  1364. this and

  1365. just as he

  1366. was leaving,

  1367. he turned

  1368. around wearing

  1369. these new

  1370. clothes and

  1371. saw the

  1372. bundle of

  1373. rags that

  1374. were his.

  1375. And he

  1376. went back and

  1377. he bundled

  1378. them up and

  1379. he grabbed

  1380. them and

  1381. put them

  1382. under his

  1383. arm.

  1384. The day of

  1385. the banquet

  1386. came round

  1387. and the

  1388. man went

  1389. in his

  1390. royal robes

  1391. with his

  1392. rags under

  1393. his arm.

  1394. He sat

  1395. at the

  1396. banqueting

  1397. table and

  1398. throughout the

  1399. whole evening

  1400. the most

  1401. extraordinary

  1402. foods were

  1403. passed before

  1404. him.

  1405. And yet how

  1406. much of the

  1407. banquet he

  1408. actually missed

  1409. because all

  1410. the while he

  1411. was trying to

  1412. balance these

  1413. rags on his

  1414. lap, hoping

  1415. that nobody

  1416. could see.

  1417. As years

  1418. went by,

  1419. the words of

  1420. the king

  1421. proved to be

  1422. absolutely true.

  1423. Those clothes

  1424. never showed

  1425. any sign of

  1426. wear or tear.

  1427. And yet

  1428. wherever the

  1429. man went,

  1430. he always

  1431. went with

  1432. his rags,

  1433. bundled up,

  1434. tucked under

  1435. his arm,

  1436. such that he

  1437. was only ever

  1438. known, not

  1439. as the man

  1440. with the royal

  1441. clothes, but

  1442. the guy with

  1443. the rags.

  1444. when we

  1445. come to

  1446. follow him,

  1447. when we

  1448. come to

  1449. be with

  1450. Jesus,

  1451. to be in

  1452. Christ and

  1453. to know

  1454. Christ in

  1455. us, when

  1456. we come to

  1457. know his

  1458. transformation,

  1459. that's an

  1460. eternity that

  1461. starts now.

  1462. Now,

  1463. we are

  1464. called to

  1465. let go of

  1466. that past,

  1467. to not

  1468. conform to

  1469. the patterns

  1470. of this

  1471. world, but

  1472. to be truly

  1473. transformed,

  1474. such that our

  1475. focus is

  1476. not on that

  1477. which we've

  1478. left behind,

  1479. and is not

  1480. on those

  1481. patterns that

  1482. surround us

  1483. each day,

  1484. and that

  1485. would seek to

  1486. form us in

  1487. a particular

  1488. way, but

  1489. to dare to

  1490. be different,

  1491. to dare to

  1492. dream, to

  1493. dare to

  1494. hope, to

  1495. dare to

  1496. believe that

  1497. we are

  1498. actually with

  1499. Jesus, to

  1500. not conform to

  1501. the patterns of

  1502. this world,

  1503. but to be

  1504. transformed by

  1505. the renewal of

  1506. our minds.

  1507. Let's pray

  1508. right now

  1509. that that can

  1510. happen.

  1511. Let's pray

  1512. together.

  1513. Lord Jesus

  1514. Christ, we

  1515. thank you

  1516. that you

  1517. come to

  1518. us, not

  1519. just for

  1520. somebody to

  1521. believe in,

  1522. but somebody

  1523. to live

  1524. in.

  1525. Thank you

  1526. that you

  1527. clothe us

  1528. in royal

  1529. garments,

  1530. that you

  1531. invite us

  1532. into that

  1533. living,

  1534. loving

  1535. relationship

  1536. that is a

  1537. daily reality.

  1538. Help us,

  1539. Lord,

  1540. to focus

  1541. not on the

  1542. things around

  1543. us, but on

  1544. you, to be

  1545. transformed, to

  1546. be transfigured,

  1547. to dare to

  1548. live our lives

  1549. as resurrection

  1550. people, knowing

  1551. that our future

  1552. in you is

  1553. certain.

  1554. And because

  1555. that future is

  1556. certain, so is

  1557. the present.

  1558. so transform,

  1559. transfigure us,

  1560. we pray, by the

  1561. renewal of our

  1562. minds, by the

  1563. power of your

  1564. Holy Spirit, in

  1565. Jesus' name.

  1566. Amen.
