  1. I think most of you will have picked up on the fact that today we're celebrating Harvest Thanksgiving.

  2. And it reminds me to thank those of you who brought goods which are behind me now, stacked up on the stage here.

  3. And just to let you know that they will be distributed between Andrew House and also the Clevedon Food Bank.

  4. So what you see here will go to help those who are going through a difficult time in their lives.

  5. And those gifts go with our love and our prayers to Andrew House and to the Clevedon Food Bank.

  6. Before I preach, let's just bow our heads and pray together.

  7. Our gracious Father, we thank you for your most gracious provision.

  8. Lord, we thank you for the food that we have to eat and the drink that we have to drink.

  9. And Lord, we pray for those who for whatever reasons either have no food nor drink.

  10. And we pray that our gifts may nourish them.

  11. But Father too, we thank you for the provision of your word.

  12. And we thank you for the provision of your word.

  13. And we thank you, Father, that your word is truth.

  14. And we pray, Lord, that as we sit together now,

  15. so you would send your spirit upon your people gathered.

  16. Lord, help us to discern your truth.

  17. And Lord, may your truth set us free to be the people you call us to be

  18. in Jesus Christ our Lord.

  19. Amen.

  20. Amen.

  21. I want to preach on a verse from the reading that Suzanne just read to us.

  22. Jesus said to the man who he had here,

  23. What do you see?

  24. He looked up and said, I see people.

  25. They look like trees walking around.

  26. Once more, Jesus put his hands on the man's eyes.

  27. Then his eyes were opened.

  28. I don't know whether it crossed your mind as we sang earlier,

  29. lustily, we plough the fields and scatter.

  30. But I wonder what, if a Martian arrived on earth and came to church,

  31. and for the sake of poetic license, let's pretend that he understood English,

  32. or that via nanotechnology managed to download Google Translator into his brain,

  33. what would he make of it?

  34. What would he make of a bunch of suburban people,

  35. most of us, I guess, didn't make our money from agriculture,

  36. singing hymns like that?

  37. We plough the fields and scatter.

  38. Well, we don't.

  39. And it struck me that what the Martian might conclude is

  40. that we'd lost touch with reality somehow.

  41. Back in the annals of history,

  42. Karl Marx, who is attributed to be the founder of socialism and communism,

  43. wrote this, he said,

  44. religion is the sigh of an oppressed people,

  45. the heart of a heartless world.

  46. And then he said,

  47. it is the opium of the people.

  48. What did he mean by that?

  49. Well, what Marx meant was,

  50. he looked at the world around him to kind of people.

  51. And he thought that religion for them was like opium.

  52. It was something that transported them away from reality.

  53. Of course, in the mind of Karl Marx,

  54. reality was the class struggle.

  55. But did he have a point?

  56. Is there any way that you could look at the faith

  57. which we espouse in the 21st century

  58. and conclude that we gather together

  59. to communally stop facing up to reality?

  60. That's a very big question.

  61. And today, reality is really up for grabs.

  62. A lot of contemporary philosophers

  63. are writing around the theme,

  64. what is reality?

  65. Well, reality is the state of things

  66. as they actually exist.

  67. They're not about a notion or an idea.

  68. It's about what we agree

  69. is in front of us, is real.

  70. You can tell there's a crisis of reality.

  71. Does anybody remember David Icke?

  72. He used to be the guy

  73. who kind of anchored Grandstand on BBC television.

  74. I think most of you will remember that.

  75. David Icke, in an interview,

  76. described himself as the son of God

  77. and then went on to say

  78. that the global elite,

  79. that is our politicians

  80. and in this country our royal family,

  81. are basically large amphibious creatures

  82. who are able to take on human form

  83. and their habits are child sacrifice

  84. and drinking blood.

  85. Now, would you say

  86. David Icke was in touch with reality?

  87. Somebody say no for crying out loud.

  88. Look, here's the thing.

  89. He has two million followers

  90. who believe that.

  91. Two million people

  92. who seem to have lost all touch

  93. with reality.

  94. Marx accused us,

  95. us people who would claim faith,

  96. that we had this weird notion

  97. that somehow by coming together

  98. and worshipping God,

  99. we could avoid reality.

  100. Let me give you two examples

  101. why today somebody might look

  102. at the Church of God,

  103. the Church of England in particular,

  104. and think that it has no connection

  105. with reality.

  106. In 1967,

  107. a man called Leslie Paul

  108. wrote an epic report

  109. for the Church of England.

  110. In it, one of the things he said,

  111. he said many things,

  112. but one of the things he said was

  113. the idea of a paid clergy person

  114. in every parish up and down this land,

  115. trained, pensioned,

  116. and given a stipend,

  117. was untenable into the future.

  118. The House of Bishops gave it

  119. about 45 seconds airtime

  120. at their meeting

  121. and dismissed the whole thing.

  122. And pretty well,

  123. through to the mid-80s,

  124. continued to deny the reality

  125. of what Leslie Paul

  126. was writing about

  127. with the effect now

  128. that churches up and down

  129. this country

  130. are mostly collections

  131. of parishes.

  132. I mean,

  133. we are extremely blessed

  134. in Christ's Church

  135. that whoever becomes

  136. the vicar of Christ's Church

  137. has only this church

  138. to look after

  139. and this parish.

  140. You only need to go down the road

  141. to find a clergy

  142. of responsibility

  143. for six parishes

  144. or seven parishes.

  145. In other words,

  146. the only way

  147. that the bishops

  148. and the general synod

  149. of the Church of England

  150. could imagine

  151. that the church

  152. could be made tenable

  153. was by giving people jobs

  154. that actually aren't that possible.

  155. What do you say?

  156. They ignored the reality

  157. of Leslie Paul's report.

  158. Let me bring it

  159. a little closer to home.

  160. All over the church,

  161. not just the Church of England,

  162. there are parents

  163. who truly lament

  164. the fact

  165. that their children

  166. have rejected

  167. the faith

  168. that they hold.

  169. You know that's true.

  170. Some of you

  171. have a dull ache

  172. in your heart

  173. because your children

  174. rejected

  175. the faith

  176. that is yours.

  177. It is really painful

  178. and I wish there were time

  179. to go into it

  180. this morning,

  181. but what I do want to say

  182. to you very clearly is

  183. it very likely

  184. is not your fault.

  185. There are other pressures

  186. on our children,

  187. always peer group pressure.

  188. I often think to myself,

  189. you know,

  190. I thank God

  191. that I was converted

  192. to the Christian faith.

  193. You know,

  194. when your kids were young,

  195. there was always one kid

  196. that you never wanted

  197. your kids to play with.

  198. And my mum,

  199. you know,

  200. imagined that

  201. there were people

  202. who she didn't want

  203. me to play with

  204. except that

  205. everybody else's parents,

  206. I was the kid

  207. that everybody else's parents

  208. thought they shouldn't

  209. play with.

  210. Peer group pressure

  211. is huge

  212. and today

  213. pray for our parents,

  214. friends,

  215. because they have

  216. a terribly difficult job.

  217. why social media,

  218. which is

  219. peer group pressure

  220. on speed.

  221. It is horrible,

  222. it is a scourge.

  223. Maybe some of you

  224. saw the documentary

  225. on BBC television

  226. this last week

  227. about the disappearance

  228. of Nicola Bulley.

  229. You may remember

  230. that she was this

  231. lady who took

  232. her dog for a walk

  233. and disappeared

  234. completely.

  235. And

  236. they discovered

  237. that she'd gone missing

  238. when her dog

  239. turned up

  240. at the kids' school

  241. and then they found

  242. her mobile phone

  243. on a bench.

  244. The police

  245. invested huge amounts

  246. of money

  247. in a professional search,

  248. diving teams,

  249. you name it.

  250. They could not find her

  251. for three weeks.

  252. During that time,

  253. social media sleuths

  254. travelled up to

  255. near Preston

  256. to a village

  257. called Inskip,

  258. walked along

  259. the banks of the river,

  260. got in the way

  261. of the police investigation

  262. and then went

  263. on social media

  264. and promulgated

  265. the most foul

  266. rumours imaginable.

  267. Many of them

  268. writing to the husband

  269. who had a cast-iron

  270. alibi

  271. as to why he couldn't

  272. have pushed his wife

  273. in or drowned her.

  274. People are writing

  275. to him saying,

  276. we know what you did.

  277. Whatever good

  278. there can be

  279. in social media,

  280. every day

  281. people's lives

  282. are being wrecked

  283. by it.

  284. And we should

  285. take notice of that.

  286. I mean,

  287. God bless Jonathan Haidt

  288. for writing his book,

  289. Warning of the Dangers

  290. of Exposing Our Children

  291. to Social Media

  292. at Too Young an Age.

  293. In other words,

  294. exposing them

  295. to social media

  296. because in developing

  297. brains,

  298. it can rewire

  299. the circuitry

  300. of our brains.

  301. The poor report

  302. our unwillingness

  303. to face

  304. the reality

  305. together

  306. of our children

  307. who reject

  308. our faith.

  309. faith.

  310. And the

  311. reality

  312. becomes very obscure.

  313. So I want to say

  314. to you very briefly

  315. just three things

  316. about that.

  317. The first is,

  318. God

  319. is ultimate

  320. reality.

  321. reality.

  322. And it's the

  323. starting point

  324. for any

  325. Christian believer.

  326. We're not big

  327. on saying

  328. creeds

  329. in our church,

  330. but interestingly,

  331. the first two words

  332. of the creeds

  333. are,

  334. we believe.

  335. Not a notion,

  336. not an idea,

  337. but stated

  338. as an objective

  339. fact.

  340. The fact that

  341. Jesus,

  342. who was the

  343. Son of God,

  344. in John's

  345. Gospel,

  346. said stuff like,

  347. I am the

  348. way,

  349. the truth,

  350. and life.

  351. That is the

  352. God that

  353. Jesus reveals

  354. to us.

  355. Everything I

  356. am,

  357. everything I

  358. ever will be,

  359. everything I

  360. have,

  361. is a gift

  362. from God.

  363. And on this

  364. harvest

  365. Thanksgiving

  366. day,

  367. remembering that

  368. won't do

  369. any of us

  370. any harm.

  371. nothing can

  372. be more

  373. real than

  374. God.

  375. Nothing can

  376. be more

  377. true than

  378. God.

  379. But the

  380. problem is,

  381. this is not

  382. deducible

  383. knowledge,

  384. it is

  385. revealed

  386. knowledge.

  387. When Ian

  388. Ramsey wrote

  389. his massive

  390. book,

  391. I don't

  392. recommend it

  393. to you,

  394. I think

  395. it's 790

  396. pages,

  397. Bishop of

  398. Durham,

  399. Ian Ramsey,

  400. wrote a book

  401. called

  402. Religious

  403. Language.

  404. He speculated

  405. four chapters

  406. on the

  407. writings of

  408. philosophers of

  409. language like

  410. Wittgenstein and

  411. these people,

  412. but in the

  413. end,

  414. he summed it

  415. down into

  416. one small

  417. phrase.

  418. He says,

  419. when the

  420. penny drops,

  421. when our

  422. eyes are

  423. opened,

  424. and we

  425. see God

  426. for who

  427. he is.

  428. Norwegian

  429. Roman Catholic

  430. Bishop,

  431. Erik

  432. Vada,

  433. I think

  434. his name

  435. is,

  436. talks about

  437. his conversion

  438. to the

  439. faith,

  440. which wasn't

  441. like a

  442. kind of

  443. classic

  444. evangelical

  445. conversion,

  446. it was

  447. that he

  448. suddenly

  449. realized

  450. that only

  451. God could

  452. explain the

  453. totality

  454. of the

  455. created

  456. world.

  457. His eyes

  458. were opened,

  459. as you

  460. might say.

  461. I met

  462. a man

  463. last Friday

  464. who was a

  465. pastor of

  466. a Baptist

  467. church in

  468. Bristol.

  469. I was in

  470. Bristol for

  471. 14 years,

  472. I promise

  473. you,

  474. I had never

  475. heard of

  476. this church.

  477. It was

  478. brought to

  479. my attention

  480. when I went

  481. to the

  482. praying for

  483. Clevedon

  484. meeting,

  485. and this

  486. guy who's a

  487. pastor there

  488. turned up

  489. because he

  490. lives in

  491. Clevedon,

  492. and feels

  493. a burden

  494. for the

  495. town.

  496. He told

  497. me that

  498. in their

  499. church,

  500. they were a

  501. small Baptist

  502. church,

  503. had 40

  504. members,

  505. on a

  506. faceless

  507. estate called

  508. Hillfield,

  509. which I

  510. confess I

  511. had never

  512. heard of.

  513. I think

  514. the only

  515. public

  516. building

  517. on this

  518. estate

  519. was the

  520. church.

  521. And they

  522. thought to

  523. themselves,

  524. well,

  525. with 40

  526. people,

  527. what can

  528. we do?

  529. And they

  530. decided

  531. that they

  532. would focus

  533. entirely on

  534. God.

  535. So what

  536. did they

  537. do?

  538. They

  539. stopped all

  540. their weekly

  541. activities,

  542. they stopped

  543. all the

  544. home groups,

  545. they stopped

  546. everything,

  547. and they

  548. met together

  549. for a time

  550. of worship

  551. and prayer.

  552. He said

  553. the impact

  554. was amazing.

  555. People's

  556. eyes were

  557. opened to

  558. a new

  559. revelation

  560. of God.

  561. we might

  562. agree that

  563. the church

  564. today requires

  565. a reformation

  566. or a reset

  567. or a revival.

  568. But I

  569. wonder if

  570. anything like

  571. that will be

  572. preceded by a

  573. renewed vision

  574. of God and

  575. who He is.

  576. R.A.

  577. Torrey said

  578. once,

  579. off-quoted by

  580. David Watson,

  581. he loved this

  582. quote,

  583. R.A.

  584. Torrey said,

  585. if God

  586. decided to

  587. withdraw the

  588. Holy Spirit

  589. from the

  590. church,

  591. 95% of

  592. what we do

  593. would continue

  594. as normal.

  595. Does that

  596. sound like

  597. it could be

  598. focused on

  599. God?

  600. I'm just

  601. asking the

  602. question.

  603. What might

  604. happen if

  605. those of us

  606. who are

  607. half-hearted,

  608. those of us

  609. who mean

  610. well,

  611. those of us

  612. who would

  613. like to be

  614. a little

  615. better thought

  616. of in our

  617. walk with

  618. God?

  619. What would

  620. happen if we

  621. focused on

  622. God?

  623. What would

  624. happen if our

  625. eyes were

  626. open and we

  627. saw things as

  628. God sees them

  629. and we saw

  630. God as God

  631. is?

  632. My second

  633. point is,

  634. first point is

  635. God is

  636. ultimate

  637. reality.

  638. Second point

  639. is,

  640. faith is

  641. seeing.

  642. In Mark

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  643. chapter 6,

  644. I beg your

  645. pardon,

  646. in Mark

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  647. chapter 8,

  648. we read of

  649. the healing

  650. of this man

  651. who was

  652. touched by

  653. Jesus,

  654. and Jesus

  655. said,

  656. you know,

  657. is that okay?

  658. What are you

  659. looking at?

  660. He said,

  661. I'm looking,

  662. people look

  663. like trees

  664. to me.

  665. So Jesus

  666. put his

  667. hand on him

  668. again,

  669. and his

  670. vision was

  671. cleared,

  672. and he

  673. saw again,

  674. and knew

  675. about the

  676. power of

  677. God on

  678. his life.

  679. The guy

  680. at Hillfield

  681. told me,

  682. they weren't

  683. particularly

  684. looking for

  685. this,

  686. but when

  687. they refocused

  688. on God,

  689. people started

  690. to get

  691. healed.

  692. People who

  693. had long

  694. term problems

  695. came to

  696. their worship

  697. meetings,

  698. there's no

  699. big deal

  700. of,

  701. you know,

  702. some

  703. hysterical

  704. preacher at

  705. the front

  706. trying to

  707. knock them

  708. over,

  709. or whatever.

  710. People

  711. began to

  712. be healed.

  713. Many,

  714. many years

  715. ago,

  716. God gave

  717. me this

  718. vision of

  719. the church

  720. as a place

  721. where people

  722. should be

  723. healed.

  724. I didn't

  725. mean by

  726. that,

  727. that I'd

  728. stand at

  729. the front

  730. historically

  731. trying to,

  732. you know,

  733. pull people's

  734. arms along

  735. or anything

  736. like that.

  737. No,

  738. what I thought

  739. would happen

  740. would be.

  741. Just by

  742. being the

  743. people of

  744. God

  745. together

  746. would be

  747. a healing

  748. experience

  749. for people

  750. who came

  751. to it.

  752. I still

  753. have that

  754. vision.

  755. And we

  756. need the

  757. help of

  758. the Holy

  759. Spirit

  760. to live

  761. as though

  762. we believe

  763. in the

  764. amazing

  765. power,

  766. personality,

  767. being of

  768. God.

  769. We won't

  770. do that

  771. on our

  772. own.

  773. You

  774. remember in

  775. Luke 24

  776. after the

  777. resurrection,

  778. Jesus is

  779. walking with

  780. some of the

  781. disciples who

  782. hung out with

  783. him for at

  784. least three

  785. years before

  786. he ascended

  787. into heaven.

  788. And they

  789. didn't

  790. recognize him.

  791. And Jesus

  792. said,

  793. come on,

  794. let's eat,

  795. I mean,

  796. I'm paraphrasing,

  797. let's eat

  798. breakfast together.

  799. And he

  800. broke some

  801. bread and

  802. in that

  803. moment,

  804. it says

  805. their eyes

  806. were open

  807. and they

  808. recognized who

  809. it was.

  810. Not a dead

  811. corpse in some

  812. cave in

  813. Israel,

  814. no.

  815. A living

  816. man who

  817. had come

  818. back from

  819. the dead.

  820. let me ask

  821. you this,

  822. do your

  823. eyes need

  824. to be

  825. opened?

  826. Do you

  827. feel you

  828. need a

  829. second touch

  830. from God?

  831. That you

  832. might understand

  833. the amazing

  834. reality that

  835. is God.

  836. Everything I

  837. am,

  838. everything I

  839. ever will

  840. be,

  841. everything I

  842. have is a

  843. gift from

  844. him.

  845. Their eyes

  846. were opened.

  847. And you

  848. know what?

  849. I've

  850. discovered

  851. that when

  852. your eyes

  853. are open,

  854. you don't

  855. just see

  856. God

  857. differently,

  858. you start

  859. looking at

  860. other people

  861. differently.

  862. Luke chapter

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  863. 19 is the

  864. story of

  865. Zacchaeus,

  866. you remember

  867. that,

  868. the funny

  869. little hated

  870. tax collector

  871. who climbed

  872. in a tree

  873. to see

  874. Jesus.

  875. Anybody

  876. in that

  877. population

  878. that were

  879. gathered around

  880. there would

  881. have loved

  882. to find

  883. an excuse

  884. to kill

  885. him.

  886. But Jesus

  887. saw something

  888. in Zacchaeus

  889. that no

  890. other human

  891. being had

  892. observed.

  893. I like to

  894. think he

  895. looked at

  896. Zacchaeus

  897. and saw

  898. what Zacchaeus

  899. could be.

  900. And do you

  901. know what?

  902. That's the

  903. way Jesus

  904. looks at

  905. you.

  906. And that's

  907. the way Jesus

  908. wants you to

  909. look at other

  910. people.

  911. What could

  912. they be?

  913. not what

  914. are they

  915. like now.

  916. We'll face

  917. the reality

  918. of that,

  919. but let's

  920. try and

  921. imagine with

  922. the help

  923. of the Holy

  924. Spirit what

  925. they could

  926. be in

  927. Jesus Christ.

  928. Imagine how

  929. your life

  930. would be

  931. different if

  932. you put

  933. those spectacles

  934. on and

  935. started looking

  936. at people

  937. in that

  938. light.

  939. I mean,

  940. it probably

  941. would help

  942. for some

  943. of you if

  944. you started

  945. looking at

  946. your spouse

  947. in that

  948. light.

  949. Not what

  950. they are,

  951. what they

  952. could become.

  953. Many

  954. spiritual

  955. writers have

  956. written,

  957. I suppose in

  958. the early

  959. days of my

  960. Christian faith,

  961. it confused

  962. me.

  963. They're talking

  964. about having

  965. faith helps

  966. you see.

  967. I now know

  968. what they're

  969. talking about.

  970. And finally,

  971. God and

  972. the whole

  973. creation,

  974. the Psalms,

  975. repeat,

  976. especially the

  977. Psalms towards

  978. the end of

  979. the Psalter.

  980. reminders of

  981. the creative

  982. power of

  983. God.

  984. It starts in

  985. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  986. 1.

  987. It goes through

  988. the New

  989. Testament.

  990. It goes to

  991. Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 11 chapter mention

  992. 11.

  993. Remember that

  994. it's not just

  995. us who will be

  996. saved at the

  997. end of time,

  998. it will be the

  999. whole of

  1000. creation.

  1001. And Isaiah

  1002. has this amazing

  1003. vision,

  1004. doesn't he,

  1005. of lions lying

  1006. down with

  1007. lambs.

  1008. I mean,

  1009. as far as I

  1010. can see,

  1011. I've seen

  1012. lions in the

  1013. wild.

  1014. It's going

  1015. to take a lot

  1016. for them to

  1017. become vegetarians,

  1018. to be honest.

  1019. Look,

  1020. this is the

  1021. work of

  1022. salvation

  1023. that God

  1024. wants to

  1025. bring to

  1026. the world.

  1027. Not just

  1028. your life,

  1029. but certainly

  1030. your life,

  1031. but the

  1032. whole of

  1033. creation.

  1034. In Romans

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  1035. chapter 1,

  1036. Paul's looking

  1037. at a society

  1038. that's losing

  1039. touch with

  1040. God.

  1041. And he

  1042. writes these

  1043. remarkable

  1044. words.

  1045. Romans

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  1046. chapter 1,

  1047. give me one

  1048. second to

  1049. find it.

  1050. Two seconds.

  1051. this is what

  1052. he says.

  1053. The wrath of

  1054. God is being

  1055. revealed from

  1056. heaven against

  1057. all the

  1058. godlessness and

  1059. wickedness of

  1060. men who

  1061. suppress the

  1062. truth by their

  1063. wickedness.

  1064. I mean,

  1065. that's another

  1066. sermon,

  1067. isn't it?

  1068. Truth being

  1069. suppressed by

  1070. human wickedness.

  1071. Since,

  1072. this is what he

  1073. says,

  1074. since what

  1075. may be known

  1076. about God

  1077. is plain to

  1078. them,

  1079. because God

  1080. has made it

  1081. plain to

  1082. them.

  1083. For since

  1084. the creation

  1085. of the

  1086. world,

  1087. God's

  1088. invisible

  1089. qualities,

  1090. his eternal

  1091. power and

  1092. divine nature

  1093. have been

  1094. clearly seen,

  1095. being understood

  1096. from what he

  1097. has made.

  1098. So that

  1099. men,

  1100. women,

  1101. are without

  1102. excuse.

  1103. Have you

  1104. ever,

  1105. you may be

  1106. a kind of

  1107. artistic type

  1108. and,

  1109. you know,

  1110. you've sat

  1111. on the

  1112. veranda of

  1113. your house

  1114. or on the

  1115. balcony of

  1116. your hotel

  1117. and there's

  1118. a lovely

  1119. calm sea in

  1120. front of you

  1121. and the

  1122. sun's going

  1123. down and

  1124. suddenly God

  1125. becomes very

  1126. viable in

  1127. your mind and

  1128. people will

  1129. talk about how

  1130. the world kind

  1131. of helps them

  1132. connect with

  1133. God.

  1134. Well,

  1135. that's a bit

  1136. like Paul is

  1137. talking about

  1138. here.

  1139. It gives a

  1140. reason why

  1141. people see

  1142. something bigger

  1143. than the

  1144. creation in

  1145. front of them

  1146. when they

  1147. wonder at

  1148. it.

  1149. But that

  1150. in itself

  1151. won't save

  1152. you,

  1153. my friend.

  1154. As I

  1155. said,

  1156. we might

  1157. agree that

  1158. the church

  1159. needs a

  1160. reset,

  1161. a reformation,

  1162. a revival,

  1163. whatever word

  1164. we like to

  1165. put on it.

  1166. But maybe

  1167. first,

  1168. it needs a

  1169. fresh revelation

  1170. of God.

  1171. Jesus

  1172. said,

  1173. I am

  1174. the way,

  1175. the truth,

  1176. God,

  1177. and life.

  1178. Is it

  1179. possible

  1180. that ordinary

  1181. people like

  1182. you and me

  1183. could recapture

  1184. a vision of

  1185. God that

  1186. would bring

  1187. life to

  1188. us and

  1189. to our

  1190. church?

  1191. And I

  1192. think this

  1193. works best if

  1194. we do it

  1195. together as a

  1196. matter of

  1197. fact.

  1198. you might

  1199. today like

  1200. to ask God

  1201. for a second

  1202. touch on

  1203. your life,

  1204. that your

  1205. vision might

  1206. be restored

  1207. and you

  1208. might truly

  1209. see the

  1210. living God

  1211. who created

  1212. the heavens

  1213. and the

  1214. earth and

  1215. all that

  1216. was in it.

  1217. and if

  1218. that

  1219. Martian

  1220. had shown

  1221. up here,

  1222. would even

  1223. have created

  1224. that

  1225. Martian

  1226. with its

  1227. advanced

  1228. language

  1229. skills.

  1230. Is this

  1231. a moment?

  1232. Is this

  1233. a moment

  1234. when the

  1235. Holy Spirit

  1236. might be

  1237. whispering in

  1238. your ear

  1239. saying,

  1240. come on,

  1241. wake up,

  1242. open your

  1243. eyes,

  1244. eyes.

  1245. I love

  1246. stories like

  1247. the

  1248. Hillfield

  1249. Baptist

  1250. church

  1251. story,

  1252. because in

  1253. a sense

  1254. something

  1255. happened that

  1256. wasn't down

  1257. to their

  1258. effort.

  1259. All they

  1260. did was

  1261. worship and

  1262. wait on

  1263. God.

  1264. And maybe

  1265. in the end,

  1266. there's

  1267. something in

  1268. there.

  1269. Let's pray

  1270. together.

  1271. Our

  1272. gracious

  1273. Father,

  1274. there are

  1275. people in

  1276. the house

  1277. today who

  1278. are going

  1279. through really

  1280. difficult

  1281. times.

  1282. Lord,

  1283. people who,

  1284. from a human

  1285. point of view,

  1286. can't see a

  1287. way through

  1288. it.

  1289. They're

  1290. hanging on to

  1291. you,

  1292. Father,

  1293. but they

  1294. cannot see

  1295. what could

  1296. be.

  1297. Lord,

  1298. would you

  1299. please

  1300. give us

  1301. together a

  1302. fresh second

  1303. touch,

  1304. church,

  1305. that our

  1306. vision might

  1307. be restored,

  1308. that our

  1309. eyes may be

  1310. opened,

  1311. that your

  1312. church may

  1313. wake up

  1314. and bring

  1315. life to

  1316. those around

  1317. us.

  1318. Come,

  1319. Holy Spirit,

  1320. set our

  1321. hearts on

  1322. fire with

  1323. love for

  1324. God, the

  1325. ultimate

  1326. reality, the

  1327. one of whom

  1328. it can be

  1329. said,

  1330. there can

  1331. be nothing

  1332. true than

  1333. him who

  1334. made the

  1335. heavens and

  1336. the earth

  1337. and all

  1338. that is in

  1339. it, you

  1340. and me.

  1341. Inspire us,

  1342. Lord, we

  1343. pray in

  1344. Jesus' name

  1345. and the

  1346. people who

  1347. agreed.

  1348. Said

  1349. together,

  1350. Amen.

  1351. Amen.

  1352. Amen.

  1353. Amen.

  1354. Amen.
