  1. It's so good to be here.

  2. It's so good to be able to see you all, see the faces.

  3. We've been going through a series on, well,

  4. we unofficially called it the greatest hits of the Bible,

  5. and we went on a greatest hits tour.

  6. The reason why is we're here to get to know him more, right?

  7. That's what we're here to do.

  8. When we're trying to get to know him, we use this book.

  9. But this book is a big book.

  10. So what happens is we end up reducing it to some sound bites.

  11. Things that we've heard before.

  12. The Ten Commandments, something that we've heard before.

  13. The Fruit of the Spirit, something we've heard before.

  14. But sometimes when you just try and get to know someone using sound bites,

  15. it's not really enough.

  16. You don't really get to truly know them.

  17. So we've been trying to go through this and go,

  18. actually, why were those sound bites even sound bites?

  19. Why are they so popular?

  20. Why was the Ten Commandments so popular?

  21. Why were the Beatitudes so popular?

  22. Why was the whole armor of God so popular?

  23. The idea was to look at that.

  24. Let's zoom in and then let's zoom out and go,

  25. actually, why was this passage important?

  26. And what is it really trying to tell us about God?

  27. And that's what we've been doing.

  28. And what we've realized as we've gone through this whole series is,

  29. man, life is bigger than us.

  30. Life is so much bigger than us.

  31. Jeremiah 29, for I know the plans I have for you,

  32. was not really about us living happy, healthy lives.

  33. That we were actually supposed to be in exile.

  34. That we were saved from all of those things.

  35. And so we see that life is just so much bigger than us.

  36. But there was one that we actually have missed.

  37. And this is the one that we're finishing off.

  38. So we're doing a bit of a swivel here.

  39. It's kind of the final one of the series.

  40. But also it kickstarts us off into a new series.

  41. And of course, it's the one that actually,

  42. if there was a passage that really reminded us that life is bigger than us,

  43. things are way bigger.

  44. It's much more about us.

  45. We're not the center of our universe, in case you didn't know that.

  46. It's the one that actually probably is the most quoted passage in the whole of Scripture.

  47. It's the one that actually,

  48. even people who don't really go to church might actually know.

  49. And of course, what is that one?

  50. The Lord's Prayer.

  51. The Lord's Prayer.

  52. And what we're going to find out is,

  53. actually, what is it about this Lord's Prayer that's so interesting?

  54. Why do we all know it?

  55. Why are there songs written about it?

  56. And what's it actually trying to tell us?

  57. So we're going to go through that.

  58. And of course, my prayer is that as we look at this,

  59. my family and I, we pray this prayer two times a day, three times a day.

  60. And actually, you likely will actually know it.

  61. I think Shum actually knows it in Cantonese, right,

  62. as opposed to in English,

  63. because it's just the way that you've been brought up with it.

  64. What does that actually mean?

  65. What's it actually trying to tell us?

  66. So that's what we're going to do today.

  67. We're going to unpack it.

  68. There's two places where the Lord's Prayer really comes in.

  69. Of course, it's actually almost incorrectly named the Lord's Prayer,

  70. because it's not really the Lord's Prayer.

  71. The Catholics call it Our Father.

  72. Actually, I think that name is probably more appropriate.

  73. It's the Our Father Prayer.

  74. It's not really the Lord's Prayer,

  75. because the Lord's Prayer is in John 17,

  76. when actually Jesus prays himself to God.

  77. This is the disciples' prayer.

  78. This is Jesus teaching them how to pray.

  79. And so we're going to go through that.

  80. There's two places that it comes from.

  81. I'm going to start with Luke 11,

  82. and then I might jump into Matthew 6,

  83. just for a little bit, just for different parts as well.

  84. So, as always, can I invite you to stand for the word of the Lord?

  85. Our Father, we stand as we listen to your word,

  86. because we truly, truly understand how important this is,

  87. that this truly does give us life.

  88. And so we come before you and ask,

  89. as we read this passage,

  90. as we listen to this passage that we've heard so, so many times,

  91. would you hit us around the head with it again in a fresh new way?

  92. Would you take us deeper?

  93. Would you take us deeper into your presence, Lord?

  94. Luke 11.

  95. Now Jesus was praying in a certain place,

  96. and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him,

  97. Lord, teach us to pray,

  98. as John taught his disciples.

  99. And he said to them,

  100. when you pray, say,

  101. Father, hallowed be your name.

  102. Your kingdom come.

  103. Give us each day our daily bread.

  104. And forgive us our sins.

  105. For we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.

  106. And lead us not into temptation.

  107. This is the word of the Lord.

  108. Please take a seat.

  109. So as you can see,

  110. this one's a slightly shortened version.

  111. The one in Matthew 6 on the Sermon on the Mount

  112. is where he goes into a little bit more detail.

  113. We'll kind of bounce around with a bit of both of them.

  114. But what I wanted to start with,

  115. which is the reason why I like this,

  116. is it starts off because in the beginning of chapter 11,

  117. his disciples go to him,

  118. and they say,

  119. Lord, teach us to pray.

  120. That's interesting,

  121. because the disciples didn't really ask that.

  122. And there's some really interesting points

  123. when it even came to that.

  124. Lord, teach us to pray.

  125. First thing.

  126. Actually, they knew how to pray.

  127. These were Jewish boys who had grown up in the system.

  128. They knew how to pray.

  129. Every day they would pray three times.

  130. And they would know how to pray.

  131. They would pray the Shema.

  132. And they would pray out of duty,

  133. out of discipline.

  134. So actually, these boys knew how to pray.

  135. They knew scripture.

  136. And yet, they saw something in Jesus

  137. where they were like,

  138. this guy's doing something different.

  139. So they weren't saying,

  140. teach us how to pray,

  141. because they actually knew how to pray.

  142. What they were saying was,

  143. teach us how to pray like you.

  144. There's something different.

  145. So that's the first observation.

  146. Second observation is this.

  147. Actually, they said,

  148. teach us how to pray.

  149. Actually, if you were hanging around Jesus,

  150. would that be the thing that you ask him to teach?

  151. They didn't ask him,

  152. hey, Lord, teach us how to preach like you.

  153. Man, you just killed it

  154. with that sermon on the mount.

  155. Took you three hours to get through the sermon,

  156. but teach us how to preach.

  157. Man, the way you healed that person.

  158. They went from blind,

  159. and now they can see.

  160. Teach us how to heal.

  161. Teach us how to cast out demons.

  162. Teach us how to walk on water.

  163. Teach us how to fly.

  164. But they say, teach us how to pray.

  165. Isn't that interesting?

  166. There's something about that

  167. that really piques my interest.

  168. And maybe it's because,

  169. actually, just a couple chapters before,

  170. Luke 9,

  171. Jesus takes a couple of them,

  172. three of them, actually,

  173. to go up to a mountain to pray.

  174. And then his face starts glowing,

  175. and then Elijah shows up,

  176. and then Moses starts showing up.

  177. So they're looking and going,

  178. wow, I'm just used to praying

  179. my three times a day prayer,

  180. doing the usual stuff.

  181. And it's kind of rote.

  182. It's kind of like,

  183. Thank you for this food.

  184. Thank you for this.

  185. Help us be good people.

  186. Help us be healthy and happy.

  187. Amen.

  188. That's what we're praying.

  189. But the way this guy prays,

  190. Moses shows up.

  191. His face starts glowing.

  192. Or maybe it's in Luke 10,

  193. just the chapter before,

  194. where Jesus is saying,

  195. Hey, the harvest is plentiful,

  196. but the workers are few,

  197. so pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest.

  198. What does praying earnestly even mean?

  199. I thought prayers are just reciting scripture.

  200. So they go, teach us to pray.

  201. Not to preach, not to heal,

  202. not to cast out demons,

  203. not to walk on water,

  204. but teach us to pray.

  205. And a final thought is this.

  206. Actually, to even pray,

  207. you have to learn to pray.

  208. Those of you who have seen my family come back,

  209. it's been nearly two months now

  210. since you've seen them,

  211. so you've seen Ruben kind of shoot up,

  212. his voice drop.

  213. These things are all happening,

  214. and you see Micah fill out a little bit.

  215. It's really cute.

  216. If we were, so in England,

  217. we were driving,

  218. and actually anywhere outside of Hong Kong,

  219. you drive for more than 30 minutes,

  220. unless you're Hank and you live out in Saikong.

  221. And so we were figuring out ways to entertain ourselves,

  222. so we listened to this podcast called But Why?

  223. And it's just questions that kids ask.

  224. And one of the questions is,

  225. why are babies so cute?

  226. Or why is my baby so cute?

  227. And the reason why they're so cute

  228. is because they're biologically designed that way

  229. to attract you in,

  230. so that they can get your attention.

  231. Why do they need your attention?

  232. Why do they need your attention, Gabs?

  233. So you would look after them,

  234. protect them, provide for them.

  235. Yes.

  236. What else?

  237. Why does a baby need your attention?

  238. Why does a baby need our attention?

  239. To copy you.

  240. To imitate you.

  241. To learn from you.

  242. So currently, MJ's vocabulary is Angu.

  243. Which is versatile.

  244. It means a million things.

  245. But eventually, he'll start developing new words.

  246. Why?

  247. Because he's copying from us.

  248. And the whole point is that

  249. when people who can speak

  250. talk to a baby who cannot speak,

  251. when they make a sound,

  252. we're supposed to imitate them

  253. to tell them that this is the sound that you're making

  254. and this is how ridiculous you sound.

  255. And then they start copying us.

  256. Praying is really the same.

  257. That we're actually supposed to learn how to pray.

  258. If you're sat here going,

  259. actually, I'm not really a prayer warrior.

  260. There are some people who I know

  261. who are true prayer warriors

  262. who can pray for hours and pray for days.

  263. I'm not one of those people.

  264. I get bored after two minutes.

  265. Well, we need to learn how to pray.

  266. It's interesting because disciples say here,

  267. they say,

  268. hey, Jesus teaches us how to pray

  269. as John taught his disciples.

  270. So they looked and saw John the Baptist

  271. and go, hey,

  272. John was teaching them how to pray.

  273. Can you teach us how to pray like you?

  274. Because it's very clear to us

  275. that you and John the Baptist

  276. do something very different

  277. to what we've grown up doing.

  278. So can you show us how to do this?

  279. Which brings me to another question

  280. is actually who taught you to pray?

  281. Have a think.

  282. Was it your grandma?

  283. Was it literally at the dinner table?

  284. Tell the person next to you,

  285. who taught you to pray?

  286. Have a think.

  287. I might ask a few of you.

  288. I'm scouring.

  289. Only a few more seconds.

  290. Who taught you how to pray?

  291. Oh, of course,

  292. if you're here for the first time

  293. and you don't pray at all,

  294. that's completely fine too.

  295. Right, okay.

  296. Let's pick on some people.

  297. Paul, let's go for you first.

  298. Paul Roth,

  299. who taught you how to pray?

  300. I guess my parents,

  301. but not in any.

  302. Not formal way,

  303. just listening to them

  304. and so you hear them pray

  305. and then so that's how

  306. you've ended up kind of praying.

  307. John C., what about you?

  308. Who taught you to pray?

  309. You're welcome.

  310. Yep.

  311. Often it's just the people

  312. that we hear praying first, right?

  313. And that's how we start

  314. learning how to pray.

  315. It's interesting

  316. because one of my favorite people

  317. in the world is Kenneth

  318. and every time I pray with him,

  319. he's kind of like,

  320. oh, no, I don't want to pray.

  321. It's just, I'm not good at this.

  322. This is cool.

  323. He's good at many other things,

  324. but this isn't one of the things

  325. he's confident with.

  326. But then once he prays,

  327. you're like, dude,

  328. Gabs is the leader.

  329. He's like, yes.

  330. It's funny.

  331. Mother Teresa was interviewed one time

  332. and she was asked,

  333. hey, when you pray,

  334. what do you say to God?

  335. And then she had the famous answer,

  336. which was, I don't say anything.

  337. And then the interviewer were like,

  338. oh, okay, that's an interesting one.

  339. And so then he, being very smart,

  340. then just twisted it quickly

  341. and just said, hey, well,

  342. what does God say to you?

  343. And she says, nothing.

  344. And it's interesting

  345. because prayer isn't really

  346. just about presenting requests

  347. and talking.

  348. It's just about being together.

  349. And it's interesting

  350. because actually I think

  351. who teaches us how to pray?

  352. People growing up in this world,

  353. in this city,

  354. just the world,

  355. just the culture.

  356. What is praying is communicating.

  357. And what we're seeing right now

  358. is actually we see

  359. a whole generation of people

  360. being taught how to pray,

  361. how to communicate

  362. in a completely different way.

  363. You've got young people

  364. who are actually struggling

  365. to actually have

  366. face-to-face conversation

  367. because the world is saying,

  368. hey, you talk via technology.

  369. And then, of course,

  370. then you've got the young people

  371. trying to teach old people

  372. how to use technology.

  373. We're all learning from somewhere,

  374. but the problem with this world

  375. is everything is so fast.

  376. Everything is so distracting.

  377. Everyone is so anxious.

  378. Especially in a city like Hong Kong.

  379. We've just spent a few weeks

  380. in England

  381. where things are just slow-paced.

  382. Everything is slow.

  383. Which actually makes it

  384. much more conducive to prayer.

  385. The moment I came back,

  386. I started walking faster.

  387. I started losing patience with people.

  388. I started doing a million things.

  389. And I was like,

  390. man, it catches up with you.

  391. The world is teaching me

  392. how to pray,

  393. but the world doesn't really

  394. know how to pray.

  395. But just before you go,

  396. oh, well,

  397. then what hope is there for us?

  398. Actually,

  399. there is comfort in this

  400. because in chapter 11,

  401. just before he starts to teach,

  402. in chapter 10,

  403. there's a fascinating interaction

  404. where he's hanging out

  405. with a few friends,

  406. Mary and Martha.

  407. And of course,

  408. Mary is the one

  409. who chooses to sit with Jesus.

  410. Martha's the one

  411. who's running around

  412. doing a whole ton of things

  413. and is getting a bit annoyed

  414. at her sister.

  415. And what then does Jesus say?

  416. Jesus says,

  417. Martha,

  418. you are anxious

  419. and you are troubled.

  420. Mary has chosen the right thing,

  421. the one thing.

  422. And that's the important thing.

  423. What is that important thing?

  424. Being with me.

  425. That,

  426. brothers and sisters,

  427. is prayer.

  428. Just being with him.

  429. You don't have to say anything.

  430. And actually,

  431. St. Teresa River Villa

  432. is the one who said,

  433. actually,

  434. when it comes to prayer,

  435. everyone is a beginner.

  436. We're going to try

  437. and learn that

  438. in these next few weeks.

  439. Actually,

  440. this time last year,

  441. we were just about

  442. getting ready to move into it.

  443. I had a picture pop up

  444. on my phone.

  445. It was a picture of me,

  446. Trevor,

  447. Francis,

  448. and we were in

  449. Kongfuk,

  450. Far East Side,

  451. dragging some chairs out.

  452. We went down to the basement

  453. and went around the side

  454. like we were stealing stuff.

  455. I guess we were

  456. kind of stealing stuff.

  457. And then,

  458. it's been one year,

  459. and I remember

  460. when we started being here,

  461. we went through

  462. the series on Revelation

  463. on the churches.

  464. And one of the fears

  465. that I have,

  466. one of the biggest fears

  467. I have when it comes

  468. to church is this,

  469. that it often feels

  470. like a memorial service.

  471. Do you remember me saying that?

  472. It often feels like

  473. we're all coming in here

  474. to talk about a guy

  475. who died 2,000 years ago.

  476. He was a good guy,

  477. and he was a nice guy,

  478. so we're going to sing songs

  479. about this guy.

  480. But man,

  481. it was sad because he died.

  482. But we're all here

  483. to remember him.

  484. If you walk into

  485. many church services

  486. these days around the world,

  487. that's how it feels sometimes.

  488. I'm like, man,

  489. that sucks.

  490. Jesus died.

  491. This is a memorial service.

  492. But of course,

  493. we said that's not true

  494. because Jesus is alive,

  495. and he's here right now,

  496. and he's here with us.

  497. That's what we actually believe.

  498. So it's not a memorial service.

  499. But then here's

  500. the second problem.

  501. We know he's alive,

  502. so it's not a memorial service.

  503. But imagine that actually

  504. we're trying to be with him here,

  505. but so often,

  506. we forget that he's here.

  507. Do you do that?

  508. Do you turn up here

  509. and go,

  510. actually,

  511. I'm here to meet with Jesus?

  512. No, you don't.

  513. You hear,

  514. I'm here to hear Paul sing.

  515. I'm here to hear someone speak.

  516. And you forget.

  517. Have you been to,

  518. have you had a birthday party?

  519. Have you ever gone

  520. to a birthday party

  521. where that person's birthday,

  522. whose it is,

  523. everyone forgets about them

  524. and ignores them

  525. and then just have a good time?

  526. That's how,

  527. sometimes that's what we do

  528. with Jesus.

  529. When we walk into church,

  530. we're like,

  531. yeah,

  532. Jesus is alive.

  533. But actually,

  534. he's just going to hang out

  535. in the corner

  536. and none of us

  537. are actually going to talk to him.

  538. We're just going to spend

  539. that time hanging out

  540. with each other

  541. and celebrating this guy,

  542. but we're not actually

  543. going to be talking to him.

  544. That's a prayerless church.

  545. That's a prayerless church.

  546. That's my greatest fear,

  547. that we walk in here,

  548. that we actually can do

  549. a whole church service

  550. and completely ignore Jesus.

  551. That's my greatest fear,

  552. my greatest vision,

  553. my greatest prayer,

  554. is that we would come in here

  555. and actually spend time with him,

  556. that you don't come here

  557. and just listen

  558. to Paul's lovely voice

  559. and that you don't come

  560. and just have your ears

  561. tickled by a sermon

  562. that you find interesting

  563. and insightful,

  564. but you come here

  565. and you meet the living God,

  566. that you celebrate

  567. the one who died

  568. but is now alive.

  569. So we're going to go

  570. through this series on prayer

  571. and just let me warn you.

  572. There is no point

  573. in me spending

  574. the next few weeks

  575. giving sermons about prayer

  576. and then us just going,

  577. cool story, bro.

  578. We're going to go.

  579. Can you see how stupid

  580. that feels and sounds

  581. when his children

  582. gather together

  583. and spend time

  584. talking about him

  585. and then leave

  586. without ever talking to him?

  587. Doesn't that just sound ridiculous?

  588. So we're going to try.

  589. I'm going to talk for a bit.

  590. Today I'll talk for a bit longer

  591. because we're going to go

  592. to the Lord's Prayer

  593. but for the coming weeks

  594. we're going to go through

  595. and actually have a look

  596. at what prayer really means

  597. and then we're actually

  598. going to try it

  599. because if we're going

  600. to be a gathering,

  601. a simple gathering

  602. in a complex time,

  603. we're going to try

  604. and figure out

  605. how to navigate this world.

  606. We're going to try

  607. and pray together

  608. and it might be awkward

  609. and you might be sat next

  610. to someone who

  611. is a little bit awkward

  612. but we're going to do it anyway

  613. because we're not here

  614. for them necessarily.

  615. We're here for him.

  616. We're trying to go to him together

  617. but of course,

  618. we'll do a little bit

  619. of the Lord's Prayer

  620. first as well

  621. but just recognize this.

  622. This is important.

  623. If you're just like,

  624. oh, here we go,

  625. a sermon on the Lord's Prayer,

  626. I want to say,

  627. this is so important.

  628. Now, we still are struggling

  629. for space here

  630. but actually,

  631. this is not the number

  632. that interests me the most.

  633. Do you know what number

  634. interests me the most

  635. when it comes to churches?

  636. It's not how many people

  637. attend on a Sunday

  638. but it's how many people

  639. turn up to a prayer meeting.

  640. That's how you know

  641. how healthy a church is.

  642. Not by how many people

  643. ram into a place

  644. on a Sunday morning

  645. but it's how many people

  646. show up to a prayer meeting

  647. on a Wednesday night

  648. or on a Monday night

  649. or on a Tuesday morning.

  650. Only then

  651. will you find out

  652. who are the people

  653. who actually really want

  654. to spend time with him

  655. and who are here

  656. just to sing a few songs.

  657. It's different.

  658. So we're trying to figure

  659. that out ourselves

  660. and we're going to go through

  661. the Lord's Prayer

  662. and when it starts with this,

  663. now Jesus was praying

  664. in a certain place

  665. and that's when the disciples

  666. look at him and go,

  667. man, he's doing it again.

  668. Hey, go.

  669. Go and ask him

  670. what he's actually doing

  671. and tell him to teach us.

  672. He went to a certain place.

  673. Made me think,

  674. do you have a certain place

  675. when you pray?

  676. Does anyone have a certain place?

  677. Do you have your spot

  678. that you go to?

  679. Do you have a thing

  680. that you do when you pray?

  681. John Mark Homer said

  682. that actually when he prays,

  683. he does this thing

  684. where he faces east.

  685. Not because of anything

  686. other than he just tries

  687. because that's where

  688. the sun rises

  689. and that's where,

  690. prophetically,

  691. that's where Jesus will return.

  692. So he,

  693. out of just using his body

  694. to pray,

  695. he faces east

  696. because that just reminds him.

  697. In university,

  698. I used to pray.

  699. I used to,

  700. me in my room

  701. and I would switch off

  702. all the lights.

  703. Regardless of what time it was,

  704. it would be completely pitch black

  705. and I would pray

  706. completely in the dark

  707. because I have such a busy mind.

  708. I needed to completely

  709. stop everything.

  710. I remember Gabs told me

  711. he used noise-canceling headphones

  712. but he wouldn't even

  713. have music in it.

  714. He would just use it

  715. just to cancel everything out

  716. and he would have that time.

  717. Do you have a certain place

  718. when you pray?

  719. If you're struggling with prayer,

  720. maybe it's because

  721. you don't have a certain place.

  722. Maybe find a certain place.

  723. Maybe there's a little nook

  724. in your flat

  725. that you can use.

  726. Maybe it is

  727. a place in your office.

  728. Maybe it's that you come up here

  729. and you find a corner here.

  730. Have a certain place

  731. because one of the things

  732. that I've learned about prayer

  733. is that you have to be consistent.

  734. You have to be consistent

  735. and each to their own.

  736. Everyone can do it differently.

  737. Christina and I,

  738. we pray very differently.

  739. There were many years

  740. where actually I have to

  741. completely shut off

  742. all the lights,

  743. draw the curtains

  744. and completely be in a dark space

  745. and only then

  746. will I be able to pray.

  747. Whereas Christina would be like,

  748. oh, I pray all the time.

  749. I pray when I'm walking,

  750. I'm doing this,

  751. I'm working.

  752. It's different.

  753. But do you have a certain place?

  754. Do you have a certain thing?

  755. And if you don't,

  756. it's time to think about it.

  757. And so he starts here

  758. and they see him

  759. and they go,

  760. teach us how to pray.

  761. And so then he says,

  762. pray like this.

  763. Now in the Matthew version,

  764. he says, pray like this.

  765. And in the Luke version,

  766. he says, when you pray,

  767. say this.

  768. And it starts with this.

  769. And the first thing it says

  770. is our father.

  771. Bear in mind here,

  772. when Jesus is doing the prayer,

  773. he's saying,

  774. this is a template

  775. on how to pray.

  776. You don't have to pray

  777. exactly like this.

  778. You guys have grown up

  779. praying three times a day,

  780. reciting the Shema,

  781. but this is how you can pray.

  782. And it can be different.

  783. It's a template.

  784. It's a theological framework.

  785. He's trying to show them

  786. who God is.

  787. Because when you know

  788. who God is,

  789. then you'll know

  790. how to talk to him.

  791. We all talk to different people

  792. differently, right?

  793. I was fascinated

  794. how British people

  795. are so good

  796. at just talking.

  797. We call it chin wagging.

  798. You can just meet anyone,

  799. anywhere,

  800. mostly in queues,

  801. because British people

  802. like queuing.

  803. And then you can just

  804. strike up a conversation

  805. with anyone in a queue

  806. and you'll just talk

  807. about anything and everything.

  808. And afterwards,

  809. you realize,

  810. actually,

  811. we haven't talked

  812. about anything,

  813. but we've just spent

  814. half an hour

  815. talking about whatever it is.

  816. But there's a way.

  817. There's a style.

  818. They're so good at it.

  819. That's what allows them

  820. to stand in a pub

  821. with a pint of beer

  822. for hours doing it.

  823. And of course,

  824. you come to Hong Kong

  825. in a cha chan teng,

  826. you get spoken to

  827. in a very different way

  828. because you get told off

  829. all the time.

  830. But they love you.

  831. But they'll tell you off.

  832. You talk to different people

  833. in different ways.

  834. God talks to us

  835. in different ways.

  836. We have to find

  837. our own way,

  838. but it all starts with,

  839. do you know

  840. who God truly is?

  841. Because who you think

  842. God is

  843. will reflect

  844. how you pray to him.

  845. Does that make sense?

  846. Who you think God is

  847. will reflect

  848. how you pray to him.

  849. And so Jesus says,

  850. hey, when you pray,

  851. if you want to learn from me,

  852. you're going to pray like this.

  853. Our Father.

  854. Our Father.

  855. Let's just go with

  856. those two words first.

  857. Our.

  858. What is our?

  859. You can copy me

  860. if you want to.

  861. Those great Chinese students.

  862. Love it.

  863. So you get our Father.

  864. Our.

  865. It means

  866. when you learn to pray,

  867. you do it together.

  868. Who struggles

  869. to pray on their own?

  870. Can you just put a hand up?

  871. And I'm putting my hand up

  872. because I'm confessing this.

  873. I find it hard

  874. to pray on my own.

  875. Does anyone else?

  876. Put your hand up

  877. if you struggle with this.

  878. It's hard.

  879. Because when you're praying

  880. on your own,

  881. you start going

  882. into all these

  883. different kinds of places

  884. and suddenly your phone buzzes

  885. because there are

  886. multi-million dollar companies

  887. giving people a lot of money,

  888. the brightest minds

  889. in the world,

  890. to create apps

  891. to get you addicted

  892. to your phone

  893. so you can always

  894. keep looking at it

  895. and stay on it.

  896. And so I struggle

  897. to pray on my own.

  898. So I have to move

  899. all the devices away.

  900. But one of the best things

  901. to do when we're learning

  902. how to pray

  903. is to do it together.

  904. Our Father.

  905. So when you pray,

  906. you say,

  907. Our Father.

  908. There's a communal aspect

  909. which is what we're going

  910. to be trying to do

  911. in here

  912. in these next few weeks.

  913. So if you are finding it hard

  914. to pray on your own,

  915. you're in good company

  916. and we're here

  917. to learn together.

  918. And it says,

  919. Our Father.

  920. Of course,

  921. if you've been around

  922. church long enough,

  923. you'll have been told,

  924. hey, that word Father,

  925. Abba Father,

  926. is like Daddy.

  927. It's like there's an intimacy

  928. that comes with this.

  929. And actually,

  930. I would say that's half the story

  931. because it's like

  932. there's an intimacy.

  933. It's kind of like you saying,

  934. Daddy,

  935. but it's a,

  936. Daddy, I trust you.

  937. Daddy, I obey you.

  938. Our Father.

  939. Now, this is where,

  940. actually,

  941. we have to pause for a second

  942. because this is probably

  943. the biggest hurdle

  944. a lot of us have to jump through

  945. because the way we perceive

  946. our Father,

  947. our earthly Father,

  948. or even just any fatherly figure,

  949. will affect how we relate

  950. to our Heavenly Father.

  951. So how,

  952. what do you perceive

  953. when you are talking to God?

  954. Do you think,

  955. do you see a king?

  956. Do you see a king

  957. who you're going,

  958. approaching a throne

  959. very sheepishly to?

  960. Or do you see a tyrant

  961. who you're just

  962. absolutely petrified of

  963. because you know

  964. you've done some mistakes

  965. and you don't want him

  966. to find out

  967. so you're being very sheepish?

  968. Or do you treat him

  969. like a genie?

  970. Hey, I'm here to ask for things.

  971. Our Father.

  972. Unless we get to grips

  973. of what that truly means,

  974. it will affect our prayer life.

  975. And so,

  976. I'm not saying

  977. that actually

  978. we have to ignore

  979. our own experiences

  980. and our own perceptions

  981. of a father.

  982. We just have to be aware of them

  983. and we have to recognize

  984. who God is.

  985. And recognizing this prayer

  986. is trying to show us

  987. who he is.

  988. This whole book

  989. is trying to show us

  990. who he is.

  991. And we have to be open

  992. that it might be different

  993. to our experience

  994. of our earthly father.

  995. Our Father in Heaven.

  996. What's your relationship

  997. like with Father?

  998. Because how you know him

  999. will affect

1000. how you speak to him.

  1001. Does that make sense?

1002. This is pretty simple stuff,

1003. but I feel as though

1004. unless we get to grips of that,

  1005. we won't be able

  1006. to truly pray properly.

  1007. And so he says,

  1008. Our Father in Heaven.

  1009. And the word heaven

  1010. jumps out to me

  1011. and it's already

  1012. just supernatural.

  1013. It's somewhere else.

  1014. It's in a far distance.

  1015. If anything,

  1016. that's a good thing

  1017. because it tells me

  1018. that actually,

  1019. I had a good friend

  1020. growing up who said,

  1021. Oh, actually,

1022. Jesus is like my best friend.

1023. And I just hang out with him.

1024. And so when I pray,

1025. it's kind of like me

1026. just talking to a best friend.

  1027. We're waiting in line,

1028. queuing up to buy a subway

1029. and I'm just going to talk to him.

1030. And there's good stuff with that.

1031. There's an intimacy with that

1032. that I just really loved.

  1033. But you know what

  1034. that really lacked?

  1035. Reverence.

  1036. That's like,

1037. Oh, Jesus is your best friend.

1038. Jesus is just hanging out with you.

1039. He's just at your level.

1040. He is not at your level.

1041. He is not at our level.

  1042. There is a reverence

1043. that we have to look at God

1044. and just enlarge our view

  1045. of who God is

  1046. and like,

  1047. Man,

1048. the fact that I'm even talking to you

  1049. is nuts.

1050. I should not be allowed

1051. to talk to you at all.

1052. And yet here I am.

  1053. Our Father in heaven.

  1054. So one,

  1055. he's in a distance,

1056. but actually the word there,

  1057. some commentators say

  1058. is actually our Father

  1059. in the heavens,

  1060. which was implying

  1061. back in those days

  1062. just the air itself,

  1063. just the atmosphere,

1064. that he is closer to you

  1065. than you even realized.

  1066. Again,

  1067. this should fill you

1068. with a different kind of reverence,

1069. a different kind of awe.

  1070. And then,

  1071. Man,

  1072. I can't just say

1073. the same thing to you

  1074. every time

1075. because you are right here.

1076. You are closer to me

1077. than the air I even breathe.

  1078. Our Father in heaven,

  1079. hallowed be your name.

1080. Who's used the word hallow

  1081. in the last year?

  1082. I did actually

1083. because my son has just started,

1084. because when we were in England,

  1085. he found my collection

  1086. of Harry Potter books.

  1087. Yes, Aidan,

  1088. you know,

  1089. the Deathly Hallows

1090. are split into two movies.

1091. What does the word hallow even mean?

  1092. Juju,

  1093. you're good English.

1094. What does the word hallowed mean?

  1095. I don't actually know.

  1096. You don't actually know.

  1097. Hallowed.

  1098. Does anyone know

1099. what the word hallowed means?

  1100. Who's,

  1101. huh?

  1102. Yes,

  1103. holy.

  1104. What does holy mean?

  1105. Set apart.

  1106. It means different.

  1107. It's like,

  1108. our Father,

  1109. our Father

  1110. in heavens,

  1111. in the air,

  1112. in the atmosphere,

  1113. in the distance,

  1114. you're different.

  1115. Man,

  1116. you're so different.

  1117. In fact,

  1118. I can't truly understand

  1119. who you are.

1120. You are nothing like this world

  1121. has ever seen.

  1122. Hallowed

  1123. be your name.

  1124. Can you see

  1125. the humility

1126. that that should fill you with

  1127. from the beginning?

1128. Does that impact your prayer?

  1129. Or do we,

1130. or do we end up

  1131. just sliding into this

  1132. because kind of

  1133. casual,

  1134. our Father in heaven,

  1135. bless his food,

  1136. bless his time,

1137. let us have healthy bodies.

  1138. in Jesus' name,

  1139. amen.

  1140. Our Father

  1141. in heaven,

  1142. hallowed be

  1143. your name.

  1144. And then it says,

  1145. your kingdom come,

  1146. your will be done.

  1147. This is the part

  1148. that really starts

  1149. to hammer home

  1150. that life is much

  1151. bigger than us.

  1152. When you say,

  1153. your kingdom come,

  1154. your will be done,

  1155. what you're saying

  1156. is this,

  1157. hey,

  1158. actually,

  1159. your kingdom is coming.

1160. It's not quite here yet.

  1161. Theologians call that

  1162. the already,

  1163. but not yet.

1164. You look around the world

1165. and you see the brokenness

  1166. and you're like,

  1167. man,

1168. God's will is not being done

  1169. fully right now.

  1170. Some of it is,

  1171. but some of it

  1172. is definitely not.

1173. And what we're praying for is,

  1174. Lord,

  1175. your kingdom come

1176. and your will be done.

  1177. Your will be done.

  1178. There's a humility

  1179. that you're filled with

  1180. right now.

  1181. There's a humility

  1182. because you're just like,

  1183. oh,

  1184. it's not my will.

  1185. This prayer is about

  1186. dying to self

1187. is what Richard Foster says.

1188. This prayer is about saying,

  1189. God,

1190. it's not even my will.

1191. I may want this job.

1192. I may want this spouse.

1193. I may want to move here.

1194. I may want to do that.

  1195. But first and foremost,

1196. I want your kingdom to come.

1197. I want your will to be done.

  1198. And that's on a macro level,

1199. the wars that are going on

  1200. in the whole world.

1201. And it's on a micro level today.

  1202. Lord,

1203. when I go to work,

1204. when I deal with my boss,

1205. I want your kingdom to come.

1206. I want your will to be done.

1207. And maybe at this point,

1208. I want to share with you

  1209. a little story about

  1210. just our dear brother,

  1211. Aaron.

1212. I know that some of you

  1213. know about this

  1214. and it only happened

  1215. a few days ago

  1216. and it happened very,

  1217. very quickly.

1218. But I want to share this story

1219. because it's such an inspiration.

  1220. I've had his permission

  1221. to share it.

  1222. And as a community,

1223. I want us to pray for him

  1224. and with him

1225. like the way that they're praying.

  1226. A couple of days,

1227. just before we flew back,

1228. we got news that Aaron,

  1229. our dear brother,

  1230. you may recognize him.

  1231. He's the tall,

  1232. white,

  1233. bold guy.

  1234. I guess it's the only way

1235. if you don't know him.

  1236. He's here.

  1237. Of course,

  1238. him,

  1239. Rebecca,

  1240. Sam and Bella

  1241. have been dear,

  1242. dear friends

1243. to us this last year.

  1244. They're on the mission

1245. with us in Young Life.

1246. And a few days ago,

  1247. Aaron found out,

  1248. well,

  1249. he's been having headaches,

  1250. like serious headaches

1251. this last month or so.

1252. So they went to the doctors

1253. and finally they found out

  1254. that actually he had

1255. a blood clot in his brain

1256. that he still has right now.

1257. He's in the hospital right now,

  1258. though Lord willing,

  1259. he will leave today.

  1260. They then found out

1261. that actually he has something

  1262. called,

  1263. I'm going to try

  1264. and say this right,

  1265. doctors don't judge me,

  1266. polysynthemic vera.

  1267. Did I get that?

1268. I'm just looking at Trevor

1269. because I feel as though

  1270. he knows you represent

  1271. all doctors to me

  1272. in this world.

  1273. Polysynthemic vera,

  1274. which is a form

  1275. of chronic leukemia,

  1276. which is actually

1277. a form of blood cancer.

  1278. And they found out

1279. a few days ago about this,

  1280. which is basically

  1281. his body just creates

1282. too many red blood cells,

  1283. which causes it

  1284. to be too thick.

  1285. And so actually

  1286. that's what's causing

  1287. the blood clots,

  1288. which actually,

  1289. when treated is okay.

  1290. If untreated,

  1291. it's dangerous,

  1292. I believe.

  1293. But with treatment,

  1294. he's actually okay.

1295. He's still going to be able

  1296. to live a normal,

  1297. fruitful life

  1298. just with treatment.

1299. And when we were talking

  1300. to him,

  1301. man,

  1302. I actually know what

1303. the prayer that he had,

  1304. him and Rebecca,

  1305. they shared with us.

  1306. He's like,

  1307. you know what,

  1308. what we've been praying,

  1309. the prayer,

  1310. the only prayer

  1311. that we've been praying

  1312. is that God

  1313. would be glorified

  1314. in all of this.

1315. That God would be glorified

  1316. in all of this.

  1317. And he's been reflecting

  1318. and he asked me

1319. to share this with you guys

  1320. and he's been reflecting

  1321. on Psalm 139,

  1322. that he is fearfully

  1323. and wonderfully made,

  1324. that actually God knew

1325. about this from the moment

  1326. he was born

  1327. and he's choosing

1328. to let it happen till now,

1329. so may God use it

  1330. for his purpose.

  1331. Man,

  1332. that's a your kingdom come,

1333. your will be done prayer.

  1334. Because so often

  1335. when we have illnesses,

  1336. ours is just,

  1337. Lord,

1338. can you just heal us

  1339. of our comfort?

1340. Can I just get better

  1341. from this cold?

  1342. Like,

1343. can I just test negative

  1344. on the COVID stick?

  1345. Just please,

  1346. that's all I want.

1347. But the real prayer is,

  1348. your kingdom come,

  1349. your will be done.

  1350. Jesus models this prayer

1351. to us in the Garden

  1352. of Gethsemane

  1353. because he's like,

  1354. God,

1355. what I'm about to suffer,

  1356. I don't really,

1357. I'm not really a big fan of,

1358. I'm not really that excited

  1359. and thrilled

1360. about going on a cross

  1361. and being nailed

  1362. in my wrists

  1363. and being crucified.

1364. So if you could take

  1365. this cup of suffering

  1366. away from me,

  1367. that'll be great.

  1368. great,

1369. but your will be done.

  1370. He humbles himself.

  1371. That's the prayer.

  1372. But that's,

  1373. of course,

  1374. a very hard,

  1375. painful prayer to have.

1376. But it's when you look

  1377. at this broken world

  1378. and you go,

  1379. God,

  1380. your kingdom come,

  1381. your will be done.

1382. When you hear the news

  1383. about Ukraine,

  1384. your kingdom come,

  1385. your will be done.

  1386. When you hear about

  1387. the heartbreak

1388. that you see in your life

  1389. and your loved ones,

  1390. your kingdom come,

  1391. your will be done.

  1392. And so we're praying,

  1393. Lord,

  1394. would you heal this?

  1395. Would you restore

  1396. this world?

  1397. But ultimately,

  1398. we're asking that

  1399. actually your thoughts

  1400. are higher,

  1401. your ways are higher,

  1402. your kingdom come,

  1403. your will be done.

1404. And then it says this,

  1405. give us this day

  1406. our daily bread.

  1407. Give us this day

  1408. our daily bread.

  1409. Martin Luther calls this

  1410. the social dimension

1411. of the kingdom of God.

1412. You cannot pray this line,

  1413. give us this day

  1414. our daily bread

1415. and not be a generous person.

  1416. You cannot.

  1417. You cannot go,

  1418. God,

  1419. give us this day

  1420. our daily bread

  1421. and then you're sat

  1422. next to someone

  1423. who actually is hungry.

  1424. You cannot do that.

  1425. It is impossible.

  1426. You can't,

  1427. well,

  1428. you can,

  1429. you can compartmentalize,

1430. which guys are very good at,

  1431. but completely ignore

  1432. this issue.

  1433. But you cannot

  1434. with absolute conscience

  1435. pray this prayer

  1436. and not help those

  1437. who are in need.

  1438. Give us this day

  1439. our daily bread.

  1440. And of course,

1441. what if this is an ode to?

1442. This is an ode to Exodus.

  1443. When the Israelites

  1444. were wandering

  1445. in the wilderness

1446. and they had no food

1447. to eat in the desert

1448. and then what does God do?

  1449. Gives them manna

  1450. every day.

  1451. What's that trying

  1452. to tell the Israelites?

  1453. I am the one

  1454. who provides.

  1455. I got you

  1456. and you need me

  1457. every day.

  1458. Not just once

  1459. and you're done,

  1460. which so often

  1461. many of us do

  1462. when we pray,

  1463. God,

1464. can you help me with this?

  1465. Get me the job

  1466. that I need

  1467. because I need money

  1468. to pay rent

1469. to live in this city

1470. so I can keep enjoying

1471. the life of the city

1472. and then I get the job

  1473. and I'm done.

1474. I'll see you next year

1475. until I lose my job

  1476. and then we'll start

  1477. praying again.

  1478. Give us this day

  1479. our daily bread.

  1480. Give us.

  1481. That's the social dimension.

  1482. You know what

  1483. you're praying here?

  1484. You're praying

  1485. for justice.

  1486. What is justice?

  1487. It's for human society

  1488. to be flourishing

  1489. on all accounts.

  1490. You're praying

  1491. for an economy

  1492. to be good.

  1493. You're praying

  1494. for there to be

  1495. employment opportunities

  1496. for people.

  1497. You're praying

  1498. for people

  1499. to be able

  1500. to flourish

  1501. and for you

  1502. to have a role

  1503. in that.

  1504. Give us this day

  1505. our daily.

  1506. Every day we come

  1507. to you,

  1508. we recognize

  1509. that we only have

  1510. what we have

  1511. because of you.

  1512. Give us this day

  1513. our daily bread.

  1514. But we're in,

  1515. I mean,

  1516. I'm so glad we're back.

  1517. Why?

  1518. Because the food,

  1519. the food,

  1520. in England,

  1521. potatoes.

  1522. There's lots of potatoes.

  1523. We were with Ken

1524. and Jess at a food court

  1525. the other day

1526. and I was just like,

  1527. oh,

  1528. I nearly cried inside.

  1529. Oh,

  1530. pepper lunch,

1531. I missed you so much.

  1532. Pepper lunch,

  1533. we came back

  1534. and we had

  1535. tam jai,

  1536. genki,

  1537. and pepper lunch.

  1538. We're a simple family,

  1539. don't judge.

  1540. But actually,

  1541. that makes it hard.

1542. Why should we ask God

  1543. give us this day

  1544. our daily bread

  1545. when we can just

  1546. use Food Panda

  1547. and get whatever food

  1548. that we need?

  1549. Give us this day

  1550. our daily bread.

  1551. Reminds me of

  1552. Proverbs 30.

  1553. Lord,

  1554. don't give me poverty

1555. and don't give me riches

  1556. lest I deny you

  1557. and forget you.

  1558. Just give me

  1559. just enough.

  1560. Give me just enough

  1561. because when I have

  1562. too much,

  1563. I've had this happen.

1564. When you have too much,

  1565. you're not grateful

  1566. for anything.

  1567. Actually,

1568. this happens all the time

  1569. in Hong Kong.

1570. We have so much food,

  1571. we're like,

  1572. oh,

1573. it's so hard to choose.

  1574. Do you know

  1575. how ridiculous that sounds?

  1576. Oh,

  1577. it's just so hard

1578. to choose what food to eat.

  1579. All this good food.

  1580. Whereas in England,

  1581. you have Wetherspoons

  1582. And Nando's!

  1583. And Greg's,

  1584. which now cost

  1585. like five pounds

  1586. to eat.

  1587. Lord,

  1588. give us just enough

1589. so that we would rely

  1590. on just you

  1591. and only you.

  1592. Give us this day

  1593. our daily bread.

  1594. And forgive us

  1595. our trespasses

  1596. as we forgive those

  1597. who trespass against us.

1598. We're not going to spend

  1599. enough time on this,

1600. but can I just say

  1601. this is so,

  1602. so,

  1603. so important.

  1604. The version in Matthew,

  1605. Jesus comes back around

  1606. after teaching this prayer

  1607. and says,

  1608. hey,

1609. you may have just got lost

  1610. in my sermon

1611. teaching you how to pray,

  1612. but I just wanted

  1613. to highlight once again,

  1614. this is the moment

  1615. where,

  1616. you know,

  1617. the lecturer goes,

  1618. hey,

1619. if you forget everything else,

  1620. remember this line.

  1621. Forgiveness.

  1622. Because if you have

  1623. any forgiveness

  1624. in your heart,

  1625. you won't be forgiven.

  1626. What does that mean?

  1627. Unforgiveness

  1628. is disconnection.

  1629. He's saying,

  1630. hey,

  1631. if you choose

  1632. to be disconnected

  1633. from someone else

  1634. because they wronged you

  1635. somehow,

  1636. some way,

  1637. and you're bitter

  1638. and you're resentful

  1639. and you don't want

1640. to hang out with them,

  1641. whew,

  1642. you've just missed

  1643. the gospel

  1644. because actually,

  1645. you have sinned,

1646. you have not done right

  1647. by God

  1648. and actually,

  1649. he forgave you.

1650. He didn't turn his back

  1651. on you.

  1652. So by you turning

  1653. your back on them

  1654. actually disqualifies

  1655. you from connecting

  1656. with him.

  1657. This is,

  1658. the consequences

  1659. are dire

1660. if we don't take heed

  1661. this line.

  1662. Forgive those

  1663. who trespass against us

1664. and we've got to say

  1665. that from the bottom

  1666. of our hearts.

  1667. Is there any unforgiveness

  1668. that I don't have,

  1669. that I have?

  1670. Is there anyone

  1671. that I haven't forgiven yet?

  1672. Is there anyone

  1673. that I'm bitter

  1674. and resentful about

  1675. man,

1676. I need to let that go

  1677. because unless you

1678. let go of that bitterness,

  1679. you won't be able

  1680. to receive forgiveness.

  1681. Unless you let go

  1682. of that bitterness,

  1683. you won't be able

  1684. to receive forgiveness.

  1685. Let me say this

  1686. one more time

  1687. because I am certain

1688. there are people in here

  1689. who still have bitterness

  1690. in their hearts.

1691. If unless you let go

  1692. of that bitterness,

  1693. you won't be able

  1694. to receive forgiveness.

  1695. It is that important.

  1696. Forgive others

1697. as you have forgiven us.

1698. Lead us not into temptation

1699. but deliver us from evil.

  1700. What's that saying?

  1701. That's saying,

  1702. God,

  1703. we are so weak.

  1704. We are so weak

  1705. against the powers

  1706. that we're facing.

  1707. Johnny preached

1708. the whole armor of God, right?

  1709. What we're facing

  1710. in this world

1711. is not just what we see.

  1712. It's what we don't see

  1713. and we are powerless

  1714. against it.

  1715. But we're saying,

  1716. God,

  1717. lead us away

  1718. from that temptation.

  1719. Save us from ourselves.

  1720. Jesus later

  1721. actually says this prayer

1722. as he tells his disciples

1723. to say this in the garden

  1724. and say,

  1725. hey,

1726. you guys are falling asleep.

  1727. You're not understanding

  1728. the communication

1729. that you need to have

  1730. with God

  1731. to have that connection.

  1732. Pray that he would

  1733. lead you from temptation

1734. and deliver you from evil.

  1735. Again,

  1736. it's the humility here

  1737. that we're talking about.

1738. Do we have that kind of humility

1739. when we talk to God

1740. or are we kind of like,

  1741. God,

  1742. okay,

  1743. so,

  1744. hey God,

  1745. sorry we haven't spoken

  1746. for a while

  1747. but I need a couple

  1748. of things from you.

  1749. I need this,

  1750. this,

  1751. and this

  1752. and I would love

  1753. for some sunshine

  1754. because we're about

1755. to go on a boat trip

1756. so sunshine will be great

  1757. for that please

1758. and I'll see you soon

1759. but don't come back to me

1760. until you've done these things.

  1761. This prayer,

  1762. this theological framework,

  1763. this template

  1764. has none of that.

  1765. This prayer reminds us

1766. it is so much bigger than us.

1767. It is so much bigger

1768. and we are so much weaker

  1769. than we ever realized.

1770. Lead us not into temptation

  1771. but deliver us

  1772. from the evil one.

1773. Some of you are like,

  1774. okay,

1775. this prayer is too intense,

  1776. it's too real.

  1777. Here's the thing,

  1778. don't not pray

  1779. just because you feel

  1780. you're too weak.

  1781. Pray because you're weak

  1782. is what it's saying.

  1783. Pray because you're weak.

1784. If you feel as though

1785. you are too far from God,

  1786. you are perfectly qualified

  1787. to pray.

  1788. You're saying,

  1789. God,

1790. lead me not into temptation,

  1791. deliver me from evil

1792. because I cannot deliver myself.

  1793. I cannot lead myself

  1794. and the scripture

1795. that Paul read for us

  1796. at the beginning,

  1797. Psalm 23,

1798. the Lord is my shepherd.

1799. The Lord is the one

1800. who's going to guide me.

  1801. I am a stupid sheep

1802. and I keep getting lost

  1803. in the thicket.

1804. I keep losing my way

  1805. but Lord,

  1806. you are my shepherd.

  1807. I shall not want.

  1808. Can you lead me

  1809. to the green pastures

1810. because I'm not in the green pastures

  1811. right now.

1812. Would you restore my soul?

  1813. Would you lead me

1814. on the path of righteousness?

  1815. Why?

  1816. Because actually,

1817. you prepare a table for me

1818. in the presence of my enemies

  1819. which is actually

  1820. those enemies,

  1821. those things,

  1822. those distractions,

  1823. those lies

1824. that I have no power against,

1825. you are not afraid of.

  1826. You actually invite me

  1827. to the table

1828. with them all around us

  1829. and you're saying,

  1830. hey,

  1831. don't worry about those.

1832. Come and sit with me.

  1833. Those things

1834. that are trying to pull you down

1835. have no power against you

  1836. when you're with me.

1837. That's what it's trying to say here.

1838. And can we pray that prayer

  1839. with humility?

  1840. And again,

  1841. Richard Foster said,

  1842. this prayer,

1843. this prayer is the death

  1844. to self prayer.

1845. This prayer is when we lay down

  1846. our lives and go,

  1847. actually,

  1848. your will be done.

  1849. Only you are different.

1850. So give us this day

  1851. our daily bread.

  1852. That's all I need.

  1853. Nothing more,

  1854. nothing less.

  1855. I just need you.

  1856. Help me forgive those

  1857. that have wronged me.

1858. Because I have wronged you

  1859. and you forgave me.

  1860. Can you see?

1861. What Jesus is teaching them

  1862. is so different

1863. to what they were praying

  1864. and what we pray

  1865. so often.

1866. It must have blown their minds,

  1867. which is why

1868. when they saw him praying,

  1869. they go,

  1870. man,

1871. we want some of that.

1872. We want some of that

  1873. kind of prayer.

  1874. My prayer is this,

  1875. that this would be

  1876. a house of prayer.

  1877. Jesus takes prayer

  1878. very seriously.

  1879. Now,

  1880. on the most part,

1881. Jesus was a pretty friendly,

  1882. nice guy.

1883. The children would flock to him

1884. and he would have a good time

  1885. with them.

  1886. But there's one scene

  1887. in Luke 19 later

1888. where he walks into a temple

1889. and he just goes berserk

  1890. because people have turned

  1891. the temple

  1892. into just a marketplace.

1893. And what does he say?

  1894. My father says,

  1895. my house will be

  1896. a house of prayer,

  1897. but you've turned it

1898. into a den of thieves.

  1899. Now,

  1900. I don't think we've turned

1901. this into a den of thieves

  1902. right now.

  1903. I think we're here

  1904. all with good intentions.

  1905. But I'm like,

  1906. my theory is sometimes

  1907. we turn up

  1908. to a memorial service.

  1909. Sometimes we turn up

  1910. to a birthday party,

  1911. but we've forgotten

  1912. whose birthday it is.

1913. We're just here to hang out

  1914. and have fun.

1915. We're here to meet friends.

1916. We're here to meet spouses.

1917. We're here to hang out

1918. and do interest groups together

  1919. and drink wine

  1920. and wrestle.

1921. Which are all okay things,

  1922. by the way.

  1923. But to pray.

  1924. But to pray.

  1925. Are we prepared

  1926. to pray this prayer

  1927. that causes us

  1928. to die to ourselves

  1929. and say,

  1930. God,

1931. you are so much bigger.

  1932. It doesn't matter

1933. how I feel about my job.

  1934. It doesn't matter

1935. how I feel about my boss.

  1936. It doesn't matter

  1937. how I feel about

  1938. my personal circumstances.

1939. I'm here to pray this prayer

1940. because this is the prayer

  1941. that you prayed.

  1942. That you didn't care

  1943. about yourself either,

1944. but you cared about us

  1945. and you said

  1946. your will be done.

  1947. Even as you were

  1948. sweating blood,

  1949. knowing what was about

  1950. to happen to you,

  1951. you prayed this prayer

  1952. so that we

1953. would have life in you.

  1954. Are we willing

  1955. to pray that prayer?

  1956. And here's the thing.

  1957. When we are prepared

  1958. for that

  1959. and when we start

  1960. praying that,

  1961. yes,

1962. we will die to ourselves

1963. but then we will also

  1964. be raised to life

  1965. in him.

  1966. Romans 8 says this,

  1967. provided we are willing

  1968. to suffer with him,

  1969. we will be glorified

  1970. with him.

1971. So only when you die

  1972. to yourself

1973. will you have the life

  1974. to the full

  1975. is what it's saying.

  1976. That's the secret.

  1977. The moment you die

  1978. to yourself

1979. is when you come to life.

  1980. That's what this prayer

  1981. is saying.

  1982. Of course,

1983. we then have the final bit

  1984. which is the glory

  1985. and honor and praise

1986. and then in Jesus' name.

  1987. Of course,

  1988. Jesus doesn't pray

  1989. that bit.

  1990. That's something

  1991. that maybe the early

  1992. church fathers added in

  1993. just to kind of

  1994. wrap up the prayer

  1995. nicely.

  1996. But actually,

1997. John Calvin was the one

  1998. who said actually

  1999. to even pray

  2000. our father

  2001. is to pray

  2002. in Jesus' name.

  2003. Does that make sense?

  2004. Because we are orphans.

  2005. We're not,

  2006. he's not our father

  2007. until he adopted us

  2008. until what Jesus

  2009. did for us.

2010. Romans 8 talks about this,

2011. that it's when Jesus died

2012. and his spirit lives in us.

  2013. That's when we received

  2014. a spirit of adoption

  2015. as sons.

  2016. Imagine,

2017. think of the richest guy

  2018. you know.

  2019. Think of the wealthiest

  2020. sugar daddy you know.

  2021. Francis just points

  2022. to the point.

  2023. That's funny.

  2024. Think of the person

  2025. that you think

  2026. is the wealthiest person.

  2027. Maybe someone

  2028. old enough

  2029. to be your parent.

  2030. Think about that person.

  2031. Think now

  2032. that you actually

  2033. need some resources

  2034. from that person.

  2035. But of course

  2036. you're not their child.

  2037. So you can't really

  2038. go to them

  2039. and go,

  2040. hey,

  2041. friendly rich man.

2042. I need me some money.

  2043. Give me some money.

  2044. And then

  2045. that doesn't work

  2046. because you're not

  2047. their son,

  2048. you're not their daughter.

  2049. But imagine

  2050. if you

  2051. were close enough

  2052. that you were adopted

  2053. into their family.

  2054. that you

  2055. speak to them

  2056. as though

  2057. you are

  2058. their child.

  2059. That changes

  2060. the game, right?

  2061. That's different.

  2062. When you have

  2063. access to them

  2064. in a way

  2065. that only a child

  2066. has access to.

  2067. And so this is

  2068. where I'll wrap up.

2069. And we're going to go back

2070. to those first two words

  2071. that I think

  2072. we take for granted

  2073. completely.

  2074. Our

  2075. father.

  2076. father.

  2077. The only

  2078. reason

  2079. we can even

  2080. utter

  2081. those words

  2082. is because

  2083. of what Jesus did.

  2084. Because he laid

  2085. his life down

  2086. for us

  2087. that we are now

  2088. co-heirs

  2089. with him.

  2090. So we get to

  2091. look at his dad

  2092. and go,

  2093. dad.

  2094. I think I

  2095. take that for granted.

  2096. Do you?

  2097. Our

  2098. father.

  2099. father.

  2100. We're going to

  2101. finish now

  2102. and I'm going to

  2103. ask Paul to

  2104. come up and

  2105. lead us in a

  2106. time of response.

  2107. But before that

  2108. I wanted to ask

  2109. you to just

  2110. reflect on those

  2111. two words.

  2112. Do you truly

  2113. understand what it

  2114. means to say

  2115. our

  2116. father?

  2117. And maybe

  2118. just here

  2119. just to give

  2120. a bit of a

  2121. take home thing

  2122. because you might

  2123. be okay this is

  2124. helpful to understand

  2125. a little bit more

  2126. about the Lord's

  2127. prayer but it

  2128. doesn't help me

  2129. go home with

  2130. my prayer life

  2131. because it still

  2132. sucks.

  2133. I'm still easily

  2134. distracted.

  2135. This is a great

  2136. template that

  2137. I first learned

  2138. from reading

  2139. Tim Keller's

  2140. book on prayer

  2141. and it's actually

  2142. to use this

  2143. template and to

  2144. expand from this

  2145. template.

  2146. So let me give

  2147. you an example.

  2148. So this is how

  2149. I pray often

  2150. when I don't

  2151. have the words

  2152. to pray.

  2153. Which is ironic

  2154. because I really

  2155. don't have words.

  2156. But for some

  2157. reason when I

  2158. talk to God

  2159. sometimes I

  2160. struggle.

  2161. And so I'll

  2162. do this.

  2163. Our

  2164. father in

  2165. heaven.

  2166. hallowed be

  2167. your name.

  2168. God I don't

  2169. really truly

  2170. understand what

  2171. that means but

  2172. you are different.

  2173. Your thoughts

  2174. on ways are

  2175. higher.

  2176. Only you are

  2177. holy.

  2178. I don't know

  2179. what it means to

  2180. be able to call

  2181. you dad.

  2182. But here I am

  2183. saying it.

  2184. God I don't

  2185. know what it means

  2186. to be able to

  2187. do this with.

  2188. Your kingdom

  2189. come your will

  2190. be done.

  2191. This world is

  2192. broken.

  2193. And I keep

  2194. wanting my own

  2195. way.

  2196. I keep wanting

  2197. those idiots to

  2198. go away.

  2199. I keep wanting

  2200. this to change.

  2201. But I'm coming

  2202. to you now and

  2203. just asking that

  2204. you would

  2205. change my

  2206. heart.

  2207. Reorder my

  2208. broken desires.

  2209. Because I only

  2210. want what you

  2211. want.

  2212. Give us this

  2213. day our daily

  2214. bread.

  2215. Lord if there's

  2216. anyone in my

  2217. community who

  2218. is in need

  2219. can you show

  2220. me?

  2221. Lord can you

  2222. show us how to

  2223. help the

  2224. waters?

  2225. How to love

  2226. them?

  2227. How to love

  2228. help me forgive

  2229. those who

  2230. have wronged

  2231. me.

  2232. There's some

  2233. people that I'm

  2234. so annoyed

  2235. with.

  2236. And my wife

  2237. is so annoyed

  2238. with me about

  2239. something.

  2240. But help her

  2241. forgive me.

  2242. Help me forgive

  2243. her.

  2244. Help me forgive

  2245. my colleague.

  2246. Help me forgive

  2247. her.

  2248. Because you've

  2249. forgiven me

  2250. God and

  2251. thank you.

  2252. And lead us

  2253. not into

  2254. temptation.

  2255. God I'm

  2256. still struggling

  2257. with anxiety.

  2258. I'm still

  2259. struggling.

  2260. With pride I'm

  2261. still struggling.

  2262. I'm still so

  2263. tempted just to

  2264. keep thinking

  2265. about myself.

  2266. Pull me out

  2267. of my own

  2268. mind.

  2269. And deliver

  2270. me from

  2271. evil.

  2272. God I

  2273. take this

  2274. prayer.

  2275. This template

  2276. that you've

  2277. given me and

  2278. I use it to

  2279. communicate with

  2280. you.

  2281. To connect

  2282. with you.

  2283. Because that

  2284. is the one

  2285. thing that is

  2286. the most

  2287. important.

  2288. And I know

  2289. I can only say

  2290. any of these

  2291. things to you

  2292. because of

  2293. what Jesus

  2294. did for me.

  2295. And so now

  2296. I come to

  2297. you in

  2298. his name.

  2299. I come to

  2300. you with

  2301. his cross

  2302. before me

  2303. and the

  2304. world behind

  2305. me.

  2306. I come to

  2307. you because

  2308. your word

  2309. tells me that

  2310. I am now a

  2311. co-air.

  2312. But I get to

  2313. call you

  2314. dad.

  2315. And can I

  2316. just say thank

  2317. you for letting

  2318. me call you

  2319. that.

  2320. I have no

  2321. business being

  2322. here.

  2323. But you've

  2324. brought me into

  2325. this family

  2326. and so I'm

  2327. grateful for

  2328. that.

  2329. Can you

  2330. remind me

  2331. every day

  2332. what it

  2333. means that

  2334. you are my

  2335. father and

  2336. that I have

  2337. siblings.

  2338. I died to

  2339. myself and I

  2340. realized this is

  2341. so much bigger

  2342. than me.

  2343. And so

  2344. again,

  2345. in Jesus'

  2346. name I pray.

  2347. Amen.

  2348. I found

  2349. that to be a

  2350. helpful way

  2351. where I just

  2352. expand on each

  2353. line.

  2354. I take what

  2355. each line

  2356. represents and

  2357. I pray whatever

  2358. is on my

  2359. heart in that

  2360. moment.

  2361. Pete Gregg,

  2362. the guy who

  2363. founded the

  2364. 24-7 prayer

  2365. movement,

  2366. says this

  2367. simple line,

  2368. pray what

  2369. you've got.

  2370. You don't

  2371. have to pray

  2372. with long

  2373. words,

  2374. you don't

  2375. have to pray

  2376. with over

  2377. spiritual

  2378. things,

  2379. just pray

  2380. what you've

  2381. got.

  2382. If you've

  2383. got anger,

  2384. pray anger.

  2385. If you've

  2386. got doubt,

  2387. pray doubt.

  2388. If you've

  2389. got confusion,

  2390. pray confusion.

  2391. If you've

  2392. got gladness,

  2393. pray gladness.

  2394. Pray whatever

  2395. you've got.

  2396. That's all

  2397. that's asked

  2398. of us,

  2399. because it's

  2400. relationship that

  2401. he's after.

  2402. So Paul's

  2403. going to sing

  2404. a song over

  2405. us and feel

  2406. free to join

  2407. in with him,

  2408. but let's

  2409. just use this

  2410. time and

  2411. maybe to

  2412. avoid kind

  2413. of being

  2414. bombarded

  2415. with too

  2416. many thoughts,

  2417. let's just

  2418. hone in on

  2419. our Father.

  2420. And let's

  2421. start there.

  2422. What does

  2423. that truly

  2424. mean for

  2425. you?

  2426. That you

  2427. are part

  2428. of a

  2429. community,

  2430. our,

  2431. that you're

  2432. sat here

  2433. today with

  2434. people,

  2435. but you're

  2436. not here

  2437. on your

  2438. own.

  2439. That's

  2440. called

  2441. sitting at

  2442. home on

  2443. YouTube,

  2444. in your

  2445. boxes and

  2446. listening to

  2447. a sermon

  2448. that way.

  2449. You chose

  2450. not to do

  2451. that today,

  2452. well done.

  2453. But that

  2454. means you've

  2455. chosen to be

  2456. in the presence

  2457. of people,

  2458. and these

  2459. are your

  2460. brothers and

  2461. sisters.

  2462. So you

  2463. say our,

  2464. and it's

  2465. great comfort

  2466. in that.

  2467. When our

  2468. kids want to

  2469. ask us

  2470. whether they

  2471. can watch

  2472. TV, they

  2473. like to

  2474. come together

  2475. because there's

  2476. strength in

  2477. numbers.

  2478. And so we

  2479. come as

  2480. our God.

  2481. We're coming

  2482. together to

  2483. you, our

  2484. Father.

  2485. God, what

  2486. does that

  2487. even mean?

  2488. But let's

  2489. come to

  2490. him with

  2491. whatever we've

  2492. got.

  2493. And I

  2494. invite you

  2495. just to

  2496. spend this

  2497. last, these

  2498. last five

  2499. minutes or

  2500. so, just

  2501. to process

  2502. that, just

  2503. to pray

  2504. that, and

  2505. to pray for

  2506. us as a

  2507. community, that

  2508. we would be a

  2509. church of

  2510. prayer, that

  2511. we would

  2512. come here

  2513. for him

  2514. and not

  2515. for anything

  2516. else.

  2517. That this is

  2518. his party

  2519. and he is

  2520. the focus.

  2521. Our

  2522. Father.

  2523. So Lord, we

  2524. come earnestly

  2525. to you.

  2526. Would you

  2527. grant us a

  2528. season of

  2529. prayer, being

  2530. with you,

  2531. where we

  2532. can seek

  2533. your heart,

  2534. true

  2535. relationship

  2536. with you,

  2537. because you

  2538. truly are

  2539. different.

  2540. Your thoughts

  2541. and your ways

  2542. are higher,

  2543. you alone

  2544. are holy.

  2545. And Lord,

  2546. this world

  2547. is falling

  2548. apart, as

  2549. it seems,

  2550. it seems.

  2551. And so we

  2552. pray for your

  2553. kingdom to

  2554. come, your

  2555. will to be

  2556. done.

  2557. not ours,

  2558. yours.

  2559. Give us

  2560. what we

  2561. need to

  2562. pursue you.

  2563. Give us

  2564. what we

  2565. need to

  2566. know you,

  2567. to trust

  2568. you,

  2569. to worship

  2570. you.

  2571. Help us to

  2572. be a

  2573. community of

  2574. forgiveness.

  2575. Lord, we

  2576. are weak.

  2577. Lead us

  2578. not into

  2579. temptation

  2580. and deliver

  2581. us from

  2582. evil.

  2583. As we

  2584. lift up

  2585. members of

  2586. our community

  2587. to you who

  2588. are hurting,

  2589. whether those

  2590. who are

  2591. hurting in

  2592. secret, in

  2593. the hidden

  2594. place.

  2595. Lord, would

  2596. you bring

  2597. comfort?

  2598. Would you

  2599. turn their

  2600. eyes, would

  2601. you turn our

  2602. eyes to

  2603. you?

  2604. would you lift

  2605. up our

  2606. drooping hands

  2607. and strengthen

  2608. our weak

  2609. knees?

  2610. We pray for

  2611. Aaron again.

  2612. We pray that

  2613. your will would

  2614. be done in

  2615. his life,

  2616. that you would

  2617. grant him and

  2618. Rebecca and the

  2619. kids peace that

  2620. surpasses

  2621. understanding,

  2622. that you

  2623. would bring

  2624. healing,

  2625. that you

  2626. would restore

  2627. his body.

  2628. But no matter

  2629. what happens,

  2630. would you be

  2631. glorified in

  2632. this situation?

  2633. We thank you

  2634. for the

  2635. progress that

  2636. baby Theo has

  2637. made.

  2638. We thank you

  2639. for this

  2640. beautiful life

  2641. that you've

  2642. created.

  2643. would you

  2644. continue to

  2645. strengthen him?

  2646. Allow him to

  2647. bear your

  2648. image to all

  2649. those who see

  2650. him, that

  2651. through his

  2652. life you

  2653. would be

  2654. glorified,

  2655. that your

  2656. goodness and

  2657. your mercy

  2658. will be on

  2659. show to

  2660. everyone that

  2661. meets him

  2662. and their

  2663. family.

  2664. We ask,

  2665. Lord, that

  2666. your will

  2667. would be

  2668. done.

  2669. Your kingdom

  2670. come again.

  2671. And we

  2672. pray all

  2673. these things

  2674. because you

  2675. are now our

  2676. father who

  2677. loves us so

  2678. deeply.

  2679. Help us to

  2680. truly understand

  2681. what that means

  2682. and to walk

  2683. around as your

  2684. children.

  2685. and to ask

  2686. as your

  2687. children.

  2688. In your name

  2689. we pray.

  2690. Amen.

  2691. Please take a

  2692. seat.

  2693. That's just a

  2694. final thing,

  2695. just a final

  2696. challenge,

  2697. maybe a little

  2698. piece of

  2699. homework to

  2700. you.

  2701. what's your

  2702. certain place?

  2703. Can you

  2704. come next

  2705. week and

  2706. ask yourself

  2707. this week

  2708. about what

  2709. that certain

  2710. place looks

  2711. like?

  2712. What's that

  2713. thing that

  2714. you do?

  2715. Those of you

  2716. who remember

  2717. before the

  2718. summer,

  2719. I had about

  2720. four weeks

  2721. without my

  2722. wife and

  2723. children around.

  2724. I developed

  2725. this thing

  2726. that I

  2727. started every

  2728. morning.

  2729. I would

  2730. start off

  2731. by saying,

  2732. God,

  2733. I'm so

  2734. glad that

  2735. you're here.

  2736. And that

  2737. was it.

  2738. And then I'd

  2739. spend the

  2740. next hour

  2741. in complete

  2742. silence just

  2743. to sit and

  2744. just go,

  2745. I'm so glad

  2746. that you're

  2747. here.

  2748. And that

  2749. was me

  2750. trying to

  2751. find my

  2752. certain place

  2753. to start

  2754. my day.

  2755. Since I've

  2756. been reunited

  2757. with my kids,

  2758. that hour has

  2759. now turned

  2760. into one

  2761. minute.

  2762. But it's

  2763. still there.

  2764. It's what

  2765. I've got right

  2766. now.

  2767. What's your

  2768. thing?

  2769. Is it a

  2770. phrase that you

  2771. start with?

  2772. Is it a

  2773. place that

  2774. you go to?

  2775. There are a

  2776. few of us

  2777. who are

  2778. actually going

  2779. to start

  2780. gathering here

  2781. on mornings

  2782. just to do

  2783. nothing else

  2784. but just to

  2785. pray in the

  2786. most low-key

  2787. kind of way.

  2788. Have a

  2789. think about

  2790. that.

  2791. And be

  2792. prepared.

  2793. And this

  2794. season, I'm

  2795. still asking

  2796. God, how

  2797. are we going

  2798. to even do

  2799. this next

  2800. series on

  2801. prayer?

  2802. Because it's

  2803. an interesting

  2804. one, right?

  2805. Because I

  2806. don't want

  2807. to just talk

  2808. about prayer

  2809. because that

  2810. feels like

  2811. a complete

  2812. waste and

  2813. we've

  2814. completely

  2815. missed the

  2816. point about

  2817. what we're

  2818. trying to do.

  2819. But I'm

  2820. going to

  2821. pray with

  2822. me.

  2823. And if the

  2824. Lord says

  2825. something to

  2826. you, this

  2827. would be a

  2828. good idea

  2829. to do

  2830. together.

  2831. I encourage

  2832. you, and

  2833. if you're

  2834. going to

  2835. keep coming

  2836. back in

  2837. these few

  2838. weeks, just

  2839. be prepared

  2840. that we're

  2841. going to

  2842. try different

  2843. things.

  2844. Why?

  2845. Because we

  2846. only have

  2847. one thing

  2848. that we

  2849. want, to

  2850. connect

  2851. with him,

  2852. to pray

  2853. with him,

  2854. to talk

  2855. to him.

  2856. So I

  2857. encourage

  2858. you to

  2859. start

  2860. thinking

  2861. about

  2862. that.

  2863. The

  2864. only way,

  2865. the only

  2866. way we

  2867. have a

  2868. praying

  2869. church

  2870. is if we

  2871. have praying

  2872. individuals.

  2873. The only

  2874. way we

  2875. can have

  2876. a praying

  2877. church is

  2878. if we

  2879. have praying

  2880. individuals.

  2881. So it

  2882. starts with

  2883. you.

  2884. It starts

  2885. with me.

  2886. So I

  2887. encourage you

  2888. to think

  2889. about that.

  2890. Again,

  2891. join us

  2892. for lunch

  2893. if you're

  2894. around.

  2895. Otherwise,

  2896. we'll see

  2897. you next

  2898. week.
