  1. there's a story told about a preacher who was going on for a very very very long time

  2. people were getting bored it was also quite cringy because not only was it very long and

  3. very dull but he was throwing his arms in all directions and he's thumping the pulpit and all

  4. sorts and after this had gone on for a very long time he accidentally knocked his notes and they

  5. went flying all over the place well in a bit of a panic he went down he started picking up the notes

  6. then he looked around desperately at his congregation and said where was i and three people in three

  7. corners of the room independently said you were just coming towards the conclusion

  8. ever had that experience where you just wanted something to happen

  9. you're just waiting for it maybe it's a release from a situation maybe it's it it's putting more

  10. positive terms it's something that you you're just longing to happen you've been waiting for so so long

  11. when we read these words of jesus which talk about the end keep watch and pray as he urges us to be

  12. expectant right at the heart of those words is this urge to be expectant but in a positive way

  13. that life is not always going to be as we now know it it's going to change and it's going to change

  14. so much for the better beyond our imagination so be ready for it be prepared for it be expectant of it

  15. keep praying for it keep watching for it

  16. as a young christian in my teens i was went to a stage where i was actually quite deeply disturbed

  17. over the end of the world and some of the some of the things that scripture said particularly in the

  18. book of revelation and uh i actually even had dreams i had nightmares of the world coming to an end

  19. and i remember one day talking to a a christian another christian who was much older and very much wiser

  20. and they reassured me on a number of counts the first thing they said was that apparently apocalyptic

  21. dreams are in fact quite common among teenagers

  22. the second thing is that in christ in christ the call to be ready

  23. is not about entering a state of psychological dread and terror it's the very opposite that call to be

  24. ready is an invitation to be excited to be expectant living like the kingdom is near is is a positive thing

  25. it's not about living in dread and terror

  26. the third thing that they said after they'd established all of that is they said actually

  27. you know whilst we do not know when that end will come and we don't and if we think we do we need to

  28. go back to scripture because jesus himself says nobody knows when that end will come

  29. we do need to know that it will come it will come and there is a real danger that we can lose sight of

  30. that reality because it can seem so when we read scripture and we read of a promised new world where

  31. there'll be no more death or dying or pain or suffering and we read of how all the evil will be

  32. completely wiped out forever it seems so removed from our daily experience it seems hard to imagine

  33. and to talk of jesus returning and there being an end it can seem so implausible

  34. but they said this this a very much older wiser christian said to me and it stuck with me that in

  35. fact that end is actually very close to every generation ask yourself this as a serious question and it's not

  36. meant as a bleak one

  37. but how many more years do you honestly expect to have left in this life

  38. now if someone was to say that jesus would return by the end of this century

  39. we would consider that's quite soon i think in the scheme of things

  40. if if the world was going to come to its conclusion and jesus was to return

  41. by the end of this century we'd say that's not actually in the scheme of things that far off

  42. my guess is is pretty well everybody in this room

  43. would have died by then

  44. and as i say without wanting to sound bleak

  45. the reality is

  46. that we will come face to face

  47. we will come face to face with ultimate reality

  48. with actually only just a few years

  49. decades perhaps but it's not that long in the scheme of things

  50. if that's not enough to convince us of the the plausibility of the end let me read to you something

  51. um by a physicist who died a couple of years ago now but um he he was a great physicist called john

  52. polkinghorn um he also was a christian and he was an ordained becker in the church of england

  53. and he spent a lot of his academic career um working out the relationship work uh wrestling with the relationship

  54. between his uh vocation as a as an academic physicist

  55. and also um as a as a christian theologian

  56. and a number of years ago he wrote a book called the god of hope and the end of the world

  57. fairly early on in that book he actually says that you know whilst we might struggle

  58. to imagine as christians an end he said within the sign within the scientific community from a

  59. physicist point of view it's a no-brainer it can't go on forever you know the end of the world is not an

  60. if it's a when he says this and i personally don't understand everything that he says in this

  61. piece i'm about to read to you but it's enough i think perhaps to make the point

  62. this pile is is um entitled certain catastrophes

  63. it says the sun shines through the effects of its internal nuclear reactions turning its hydrogen

  64. into helium in about five billion years time all the core hydrogen that will be exhausted and the sun

  65. will be will then swell to become a red giant burning any life surviving on earth into a frazzle

  66. in the process our understanding of the course of stellar evolution is good enough

  67. to make this prediction absolutely reliable of course by then it is possible that terrestrial life

  68. will have migrated elsewhere in the galaxy however the universe itself faces a highly problematic future

  69. its long-term history is controlled by the competing effects of expansion the explosive consequences of the big bang

  70. and gravity drawing matter together these contrasting tendencies are very evenly balanced and we do not know for certain

  71. which will win in the end if expansion predominates the possibility currently favoured by most cosmologists

  72. cosmic history will continue forever in a world growing steadily colder and more dilute

  73. eventually all will decay into low-grade radiation

  74. if gravity predominates

  75. the present expansion will one day be halted and reversed

  76. what began with the big bang will end with a big crunch

  77. as the universe implodes into a cosmic melting pot

  78. now the time scales for these processes are immensely long

  79. spanning many tens of billions of years

  80. but one or other of them is a certain prognostication of the cosmic future

  81. however fruitful the universe may seem today

  82. its end lies in futility

  83. it is perhaps not surprising that the distinguished american theoretical physicist

  84. steven weinberg

  85. writing within the limited horizon of an atheist physicalism

  86. and with science alone as his guide

  87. could say that the more he understood the universe

  88. the more it seemed to him

  89. to be pointless

  90. you see the end of the world

  91. from a physicist's point of view

  92. it's not an if

  93. it's a when

  94. and if we're left just alone in this world

  95. with no sense of conviction

  96. that there is a God who is behind all of this

  97. what is the point?

  98. but that's not where the Bible leads us

  99. the Bible talks

  100. obviously not in scientific terms

  101. but does talk

  102. with certainty and with conviction

  103. that life will not always be like this

  104. that things will come to a conclusion

  105. it will come to an end

  106. but not in a meaningless futile way

  107. with no purpose

  108. so we're just here for a few years and then gone

  109. although it may feel like that

  110. from a human point of view

  111. but rather

  112. and this is where we come to the words of Jesus

  113. we are called to be expectant

  114. because

  115. God has everything in his hands

  116. and he calls us to keep watch

  117. and to pray

  118. and to be ready

  119. and to be tuned into the fragility of life

  120. because we do not know when that's going to come to an end

  121. as individuals

  122. if not cosmologically

  123. but to be aware of that mortality

  124. and of that finitude

  125. but not from a place of despair

  126. the very opposite

  127. rather to be filled with Holy Spirit hope

  128. knowing that that which we know

  129. and love

  130. and which is good

  131. and wholesome

  132. and of God

  133. and is life-giving

  134. and life-transforming

  135. in a positive way

  136. will be eternal

  137. we don't know

  138. quite how that will be

  139. we don't know when it will be

  140. but it will be

  141. it's not an if

  142. it's a when

  143. so I'm going to take a pause

  144. now

  145. to be still

  146. and I'm going to ask you a question

  147. and I'm not going to turn

  148. ask you to turn to the person next to you

  149. to discuss this one

  150. I am going to ask all of us

  151. and I'm going to join you in this as well

  152. to pray

  153. and there's a danger

  154. that this kind of question

  155. can seem like a cliche

  156. because it's often trotted off

  157. as a cliche

  158. almost I think a bit of a cliche question

  159. but I mean this is a serious question

  160. and the question I want to put to you is this

  161. if you knew beyond all doubt

  162. and by the way

  163. you can't know beyond all doubt

  164. but if you did know beyond all doubt

  165. that Christ was going to return

  166. within the next 24 hours

  167. what would you do?

  168. that's a serious question

  169. and I'm going to invite

  170. each of us right now

  171. to just pause

  172. to be still

  173. for about half a minute

  174. and just ask ourselves that question

  175. and then I'm going to say a prayer

  176. Lord God

  177. we do not know the day

  178. or the hour

  179. of your return

  180. and we do not know the day

  181. or hour

  182. of when we will leave this life

  183. on earth

  184. but help us to be ready

  185. and help us to shape

  186. the way that we live

  187. around a genuine sense of expectation

  188. that your kingdom is near

  189. Amen

  190. Amen

  191. We haven't reached the end yet

  192. of the talk

  193. in case you were thinking

  194. there's more to come

  195. what does this mean in practical terms?

  196. well I want to share with you

  197. two thoughts

  198. the first thing in practical terms

  199. if we're to live

  200. like the kingdom is near

  201. sorry

  202. is that we are to live

  203. like the kingdom is near

  204. if we are to keep watching

  205. to pray

  206. it means having that sense

  207. of genuine expectation

  208. that what we see

  209. and experience going on around us

  210. does not match

  211. what ultimate reality will be

  212. according to the promises of God

  213. in 1982

  214. in Wisconsin

  215. there was an American football game

  216. taking place

  217. and the home team

  218. were playing

  219. and it was going

  220. disastrously wrong

  221. it was

  222. they were losing

  223. by a country mile

  224. and yet

  225. although as this game

  226. was going from bad

  227. to even worse

  228. to even even worse

  229. the crowd gathered

  230. seemed remarkably excited

  231. and the reason why

  232. they were excited

  233. was not because

  234. the game before them

  235. their home team

  236. were spectacularly losing

  237. right in front of them

  238. but 70 miles away

  239. their baseball team

  240. in another stadium

  241. were doing remarkably well

  242. now this was in the days

  243. before mobile phones

  244. and the internet

  245. but they did have

  246. portable radios

  247. and quite a few thousand people

  248. in that stadium

  249. that day

  250. had their portable radios

  251. and were following the match

  252. not only right in front of them

  253. but the one that they were winning

  254. 70 miles away

  255. and so you had this kind of

  256. rather bizarre

  257. contradictory scene

  258. of a match

  259. in a stadium

  260. that seemed to be going

  261. spectacularly badly

  262. and yet everybody

  263. was cheering

  264. excitedly

  265. with a sense of victory

  266. in the air

  267. you see

  268. while on the field

  269. before them

  270. was defeat

  271. their attention

  272. was on a victory

  273. that they could not see

  274. but knew

  275. was very very real

  276. it may not look like it

  277. but we are winning

  278. and to keep watching

  279. to pray expectantly

  280. is to live like

  281. the kingdom is near

  282. that's the first thing

  283. I said

  284. there were two things

  285. here's the second one

  286. and the last one

  287. to keep watching

  288. to pray

  289. means to expect

  290. God

  291. to move

  292. in our lives

  293. not just in someone else's lives

  294. but in our lives

  295. not in a way

  296. that is contrived

  297. or false optimism

  298. but a genuine expectation

  299. coupled with a bit of mystery

  300. that we don't quite know how

  301. but nevertheless

  302. God will work in us

  303. the pastor and writer

  304. Rick Warren

  305. who was a leader

  306. of an enormous church

  307. Saddleback Church

  308. in America

  309. and the writer

  310. of the purpose driven life

  311. and the purpose driven church

  312. was interviewed

  313. at a leadership conference

  314. a few years ago

  315. and was asked

  316. what

  317. why does God

  318. use you

  319. and he said

  320. in what I think

  321. is a genuine

  322. genuine, authentic

  323. and non-arrogant way

  324. he said

  325. God uses me

  326. because I expect him to

  327. now think about that

  328. how might you expect

  329. God to use you

  330. even in this next week

  331. I'm going to close

  332. with something visual

  333. it's not a magic trick

  334. just to warn you

  335. so don't be disappointed

  336. it's such an obvious

  337. illustration

  338. it's almost

  339. too obvious

  340. but sometimes

  341. the visual things

  342. can help us grasp things

  343. and I've got here a glove

  344. it's a bit of a dirty

  345. looking glove

  346. because it's a working glove

  347. but I'm going to

  348. pop it on there

  349. and I want that glove

  350. to work

  351. I want that glove

  352. to pick up

  353. that Bible

  354. and so I'm going to

  355. tell the glove

  356. to do that

  357. here it goes

  358. glove

  359. lift that Bible

  360. and there's not much

  361. happening

  362. so maybe

  363. the glove

  364. needs a little bit

  365. of encouragement

  366. come on glove

  367. you can do it

  368. come on

  369. you know you've got it

  370. inside you

  371. if you just deep

  372. reach deep within

  373. you can do it

  374. go on

  375. pick it up

  376. pick up the Bible

  377. come on

  378. come on

  379. come on

  380. it's not much

  381. is it

  382. maybe

  383. maybe it needs

  384. some training

  385. maybe it hasn't

  386. been told

  387. how to

  388. how to do

  389. its job

  390. glove

  391. if you just

  392. stretch out

  393. your fingers

  394. like that

  395. and your thumb

  396. and just grip

  397. them together

  398. around the Bible

  399. and then lift

  400. you can do

  401. that

  402. that's not

  403. really working

  404. what this

  405. glove needs

  406. is some

  407. fellowship

  408. it needs

  409. some other

  410. gloves

  411. around and

  412. about it

  413. it needs to

  414. be in a

  415. home group

  416. to give it

  417. some

  418. it needs to

  419. be surrounded

  420. by a range

  421. of other

  422. different

  423. types of

  424. gloves

  425. come on glove

  426. you can do it

  427. that glove

  428. needs to

  429. make a

  430. recommitment

  431. it needs to

  432. stretch out

  433. its hand

  434. it needs to

  435. be baptised

  436. it needs to

  437. make its

  438. life

  439. explicitly

  440. committed

  441. come on

  442. come forward

  443. give it your

  444. all

  445. no holding

  446. back

  447. you know

  448. as well

  449. as I do

  450. that that's

  451. not going

  452. to happen

  453. but you also

  454. know that

  455. that as a

  456. work glove

  457. was designed

  458. with a

  459. purpose

  460. to work

  461. and there's

  462. only way

  463. one way

  464. that that's

  465. going to

  466. happen

  467. it's not

  468. going to

  469. work by

  470. itself

  471. it wasn't

  472. designed to

  473. and neither

  474. were you

  475. or I

  476. we are

  477. wired to

  478. work in

  479. partnership

  480. we're

  481. called to

  482. work in

  483. partnership

  484. God created

  485. us to

  486. work in

  487. partnership

  488. God

  489. longs for

  490. us to

  491. work in

  492. partnership

  493. to keep

  494. watching to

  495. pray doesn't

  496. mean we

  497. step back

  498. and we

  499. expect God

  500. just to

  501. step in

  502. and do

  503. it even

  504. though it

  505. is all

  506. by his

  507. strength

  508. but to

  509. keep

  510. watching to

  511. pray means

  512. to be

  513. expectant

  514. that the

  515. one from

  516. without

  517. will indeed

  518. enter even

  519. our

  520. lives

  521. God's

  522. God's

  523. God's

  524. God's

  525. God's

  526. God's

  527. Holy Spirit

  528. is not

  529. simply

  530. near us

  531. or with

  532. us or

  533. beside us

  534. although he's

  535. all those

  536. things

  537. but that he

  538. is actually

  539. in us

  540. and Jesus'

  541. call to

  542. keep watch

  543. and to

  544. pray is

  545. that invitation

  546. that the

  547. living God

  548. who longs to

  549. occupy our

  550. lives in a

  551. way that will

  552. be unique to

  553. each and

  554. every one

  555. of us

  556. will fill

  557. us

  558. and enable

  559. us to

  560. fulfil that

  561. purpose

  562. for which

  563. he has

  564. designed

  565. us

  566. to keep

  567. watch

  568. and to

  569. pray

  570. is to

  571. be

  572. expectant

  573. to be

  574. ready

  575. that God

  576. the author

  577. of the

  578. universe

  579. the giver

  580. of salvation

  581. can and

  582. will

  583. enter us

  584. and use

  585. us in

  586. ways that

  587. we probably

  588. don't imagine

  589. so let's

  590. pray together

  591. now that

  592. he will do

  593. just that

  594. Lord thank

  595. you

  596. that you

  597. call us

  598. to be

  599. expectant

  600. and ready

  601. not in a

  602. way that

  603. lives in

  604. dread

  605. but that

  606. lives in

  607. hope

  608. Lord help

  609. us

  610. consciously

  611. and

  612. subconsciously

  613. to be

  614. expectant

  615. that you

  616. can and

  617. that you

  618. will use

  619. us

  620. to live

  621. like the

  622. kingdom is

  623. here

  624. and to

  625. keep watch

  626. not in our

  627. own strength

  628. but in that

  629. expectation that

  630. you will enter
